28 Mar 2024MENTAL HEALTH HEADLINE HOT TAKES with Nick and Todd ep1300:20:31

EP 13: HOT TAKES on NHL Denying CTE Influence on Player Suicides and Study Links Brain Changes to Mental Illness

Nick and Todd are back with more mental health news, ready to dissect the headlines and spark your critical thinking.

Todd wants answers as to why the NHL claims CTE (Chronic traumatic encephalopathy) is not part of hockey: Former NHL players Chris Simon and Konstantin Koltsov's deaths were announced on the same day. Simon’s family strongly believes CTE played a role in his taking his life. Koltsov’s family has not commented as of this episode. Nick and Todd share their thoughts on why the NHL would deny CTE involvement in player suicides.

Nick brings the results of a new study linking brain changes to mental health. A breakthrough study reveals the diversity of brain changes found in people with mental health conditions like major depression and schizophrenia. Nick and Todd share their thoughts and speculate on how this could fundamentally change how we approach mental illness.

Prepare for passionate arguments, diverse perspectives, and a deeper understanding of the complex world of mental health. Get ready to engage your mind and challenge your assumptions on Mental Health Headlines Hot Takes with Nick and Todd.

25 May 2024Cornwall Alternative School - Bryan Rice and Jay Kayseas00:53:44
In March I had the pleasure of spending time at Cornwall Alternative School in Regina Saskatchewan. There I met an incredibly passionate and caring staff along with the funny, smart, and charming students. Cornwall Alternative School brings in youth from every corner of the city that are slipping through the cracks in public, Catholic and private schools. Its whole purpose is to support youth with compassion and empathy that would otherwise likely dropout and get lost in the abyss with societies under privileged. These youth deal with things like addiction, trauma, mental illness and poor home lives. The school relies on donations and partial funding from the local government to stay operational. In this episode I speak with the principal, Bryan Rice and school counsellor Jay Kayseas to get a better idea of how the school started, obstacles a school like this runs into, what some of the needs of their students are and the future hopes for the school. 24 Feb 2024What You Need to Know Before You Die - Erin and Lauren01:09:25
A death doula is a person that helps families and individuals with the process of dying, funerals, grief and more. Erin Merelli, a death doula and Lauren Carroll, a funeral director, are the co-creators of Deathwives, a training program for potential death doulas. It may not be a mental health service per se, however it is a service that can provide the prevention of certain mental anguish. How many times have you seen families struggle during a long drawn out or death or a sudden tragic death? Many families don't recover. Many individuals don't recover. What is it about death that we avoid the topic even though we are all going to die? This is part two of Michelle’s story

Michelle Tennant Nicholson, M.A. is an award-winning author and international publicist. During the pandemic, Michelle authored her memoir using the working title, The Dairy Princess Chronicles: Shining Diamonds in a Rhinestone World. It describes how she put a pedophile in jail when she was 17 years old. After Michelle incarcerated her childhood predator, she healed her own mental injury, achieved a life filled with happiness, and now teaches others how to pursue the same—whether they suffer from PTSD or not. The profits from her memoir fund charities working toward a trauma-informed society. EP 18: HOT TAKES on Americans Losing Years of Time to Poor Mental Health and Loud Car Owners Being Psychopaths

Nick and Todd are back with more mental health news, ready to dissect the headlines and spark your critical thinking.

Nick wants to discuss new survey findings that Americans have lost years of their life to poor mental health. A new survey by GeneSight Mental Health Monitor found that 80% of Americans suffering from anxiety and depression feel they lost significant years in their life due to their illness. Nick and Todd discuss the survey results and their experiences of lost time from mental health struggles.

Todd shares a professor’s claims that noise pollution from illegal cars needs to be taken seriously. A professor at Western University in London looks to expand on a study suggesting a correlation between men with loud cars having personality traits of sadism and psychopathy. Todd and Nick share their thoughts on the professor and study.

12 Jun 2021The Language We Use Around Addictions and the Damage it Can Cause - Dr. Kara Fletcher00:50:00

In this episode I talk to Dr. Kara Fletcher. Kara has conducted a study on the language we use around the topic of addiction. An overarching theme soon emerged: words matter. Words like 'junkie', 'abuser', 'clean/dirty' has a serious affect on how 'addicts' view themselves which in turn perpetuates the already negative stigma regarding addiction.  You can watch Kara present her research findings here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TR9ozr55UxU

Topics include addiction, depression, anxiety

27 May 2023Being a Nurse During a Pandemic - Tracy Zambory01:10:00
Imagine being called a hero one day, with love, respect and accolades being shown, to seemingly over night being spat at and called a murderer as you entered your place of work. Imagine holding a tablet for someone as their loved ones had to say their final good byes virtually. Imagine being so understaffed, over worked you, yet dedicated, you didn't leave work for days at a time. That was the reality for nurses during COVID and unfortunately not much has gotten better. This week's guest is Tracy Zambory, President of SUN (Saskatchewan Union of Nurses). Tracy describes what it was like for nurses during that time and the effects nurses are still dealing today as well as her own families issues with mental health and addiction. Go to SUN's website at https://sun-nurses.sk.ca/ or follow them on Instagram @sun_nurses Topics in this episode include addiction, ADHD, trauma, bipolar disorder, suicide, PTSD FOLLOW BUNNY HUGS AND MENTAL HEALTH   on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/Bunny-Hugs-and-Mental-Health-103055408571486   on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/bunnyhugspodcast/?hl=en   TikTok https://tiktok.com/@bunnyhugspodcast/   Check out my children book at https://www.amazon.ca/Sometimes-Daddy-Cries-Todd-Rennebohm/dp/0228834678   Bunny Hugs and Mental Health is currently on the Top Ten Best Canadian Mental Health podcasts list! https://blog.feedspot.com/canadian_mental_health_podcasts/   And the Top 100 Best Mental Health Podcasts on the internet! https://blog.feedspot.com/mental_health_podcasts/
14 May 2022The Mental Health Affects of Being 'Canceled' - Katie Herzog01:00:00

Katie Herzog is a queer journalist and podcaster. In 2017 Katie wrote an article about trans people that transitioned back to their birth sex. Katie didn't expect the results that followed. A small but loud group made her life hell. She received endless hate online, she lost several friends, posters calling her a Nazi sympathizer were put up and she was shunned by co-workers. Today she is a popular co-host of the podcast Blocked and Reported. Katie and I discuss the emotional and mental health affects of being 'canceled'.

08 Oct 2022PMDD Took My Daughter's Life - Donna00:58:28

Bachelor fans may recognize Donna Micheletti from an episode of Dr. Phil or from season 14 of The Bachelor. Donna's daughter Gia Allemand, who was a popular cast member that season, took her life in 2013. Gia struggled with suicidal thoughts and attempts in her teen years and was eventually diagnosed with PMDD (Premenstrual  Dysphoric Disorder), a disorder that affect roughly 4 million women in the United States. Many women with PMDD are wrongfully diagnosed with bipolar because few doctors know much about PMDD. Sufferers of PMDD are more than 3 times more likely to attempt suicide than the average woman. Donna is on a mission to educate the world about PMDD and to let those suffering to know that taking your life is not the answer.

16 May 2024MENTAL HEALTH HEADLINE HOT TAKES with Nick and Todd ep 2000:28:05

EP 20: HOT TAKES on Listener Feedback on a Past Episode and Physiatrist Prescribing Nature for Mental Illness

Nick and Todd are back with more mental health news, ready to dissect the headlines and spark your critical thinking.

Todd shares listener feedback from a recent episode of the show. The listener and Todd discussed how some past language used was offensive and oppressive. Nick and Todd discuss their reflections on the feedback, trigger warnings, and how to conduct respectful and productive conversations about controversial topics.

Nick shares a story about a psychiatrist named Nora Dennis who is prescribing a nature retreat to help people with mental health struggles. The retreat comes as a result of her frustration with some of the limitations of working in corporate and institutional medicine and learning her clients are “desperate to go outside.” Nick and Todd discuss the benefits of spending time in nature and the role it can play in mental health treatment.

Prepare for passionate arguments, diverse perspectives, and a deeper understanding of the complex world of mental health. Join Nick and Todd for Mental Health Headlines Hot Takes to engage your mind and challenge your assumptions.

08 Nov 2023Growing Up Abused and Unwanted - Brad Keck01:11:35

Brad Keck grew up in a broken home. He was bounced back and forth between his parents, grandparents and extended family, eventually ending up in a foster group home for children. What happened in all those homes? Why did no one make him feel wanted and how did that affect his adult years? I went to school for a couple years with Brad and always wondered about him. Then one day I saw his name in an article in my local news paper 'Man severely burned in house explosion doubly punished'.

Topics in this episode include abuse, trauma, addiction, depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation

23 Jul 2022Growing Up Silenced; Growing Up Around Mental Illness - Daniella Ponticelli00:55:44

This is an episode I've been wanting to do for a long time! We've heard first hand experiences from people suffering from mental illness, professionals, parents and siblings but this episode is from the perspective of a child. This week I speak with Daniella. Daniella is a journalist that grew up in a house with mental illness. Not only did she live with an ill parent but her family also immigrated to Canada when she was a child. She explains how these challenges affected her own mental health growing up and how they still affect her today. Daniella's story is relatable, riveting and well told, so much so that I decided to make it a two part episode. Stay tuned next week for the conclusion of Growing Up Silenced; Growing Up Around Mental Illness.

Topics include trauma, borderline personality disorder, addiction, anger, PTSD, generational trauma

HOT TAKES on the Pros and Cons of Telemedicine Therapy and Zuckerberg’s New Social Media Claims

Nick and Todd are back with more mental health news, ready to dissect the headlines and spark your critical thinking.

Nick brings up the pros and cons of telemedicine therapy: Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, telemedicine therapy has become the new normal for many seeking mental health support, but what are the pros and cons? Nick and Todd discuss how video therapy expands access to more people but also limits the personal connection-building needed for certain types of therapy.

Todd wants to discuss Meta-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg's recent mental health comments: Zuckerberg is now claiming that social media does not negatively impact a user's mental health, but where did his information come from? Todd and Nick examine the truth behind his comments and his vested interest in making such claims.

Prepare for passionate arguments, diverse perspectives, and a deeper understanding of the complex world of mental health. Get ready to engage your mind and challenge your assumptions on Mental Health Headlines Hot Takes with Nick and Todd.

04 Mar 2023Maladaptive Daydreaming - Jayne Bigelsen01:03:12

What if you were so addicted to something you couldn't even have a conversation in a restaurant without wanting to run to the bathroom to use, you were losing friends , jobs and school? What if I told you that something you were addicted to was daydreaming? That was Jayne's reality for years and the that disorder is now called maladaptive daydreaming. 23 Mar 2024Sextortionists Convinced My Son to Take His Life - Jennifer Buta00:50:12

In March of 2022 Jenn’s son Jordan took his own life after being catfished online and sextorted. Sextortion, or sexual extortion, occurs when an online actor threatens to release a victim's intimate photos or videos for financial gain. These people tend to target youth between the ages of 14 and 24. In Jordan’s case his culprits were caught, but very few are. Almost always, the guilty party is overseas. There have been multiple teens taking their lives in very similar situations as Jordan’s in Canada and the US. What should young people know about the dangers of sextortion? What can we do as parents? And what are social media outlets doing about it?

11 Mar 2023Fighting To Find a Diagnosis For My Daughter - Pam Hutchings01:10:06

Pam's daughter Taryn was a normal teen, maybe even exceptional. Taryn was succeeding in advanced classes in school, a dancer and athlete. Then seemingly over night Taryn became suicidal, hearing voices and seeing things that weren't there. Over the last 7 months, Taryn has spent most of it in the hospital. Pam had to leave her job to become a care giver for Taryn all while trying to find medications and treatments that could have any affect on Taryn's health. In the midst of the chaos, Pam and Taryn started a non for profit group for teens suffering with mental illness and their caregivers, Teens Talk YXE. Listen to Pam's experience and make sure to keep listening after the interview as I give an update on Taryn's diagnosis.  MAKE SURE TO FOLLOW TEENS TALK YXE ON INSTAGRAM @teens_talkyxe

27 Jun 2024MENTAL HEALTH HEADLINE HOT TAKES with Nick and Todd ep2600:22:23

EP 26 HOT TAKES on Involuntary Drug Treatment Policy & The Role of Vitamin D in Your Mental Health

Nick and Todd are back with more mental health news, ready to dissect the headlines and spark your critical thinking.

Nick brings research reporting linking depression and anxiety to a vitamin D deficiency. Ongoing research continues to examine the link between vitamin D and mental health due to the symptom overlap between vitamin D deficiency deficiency and those of depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline. Nick and Todd discuss the research and the importance of integrated approaches to mental health treatments.

Todd brings to light a new Canadian policy for involuntary drug treatments. Alberta, Canada, has introduced new legislation that would be the first involuntary treatment law in Canada to target addiction for adults. Todd and Nick debate whether family members, doctors, or police can force drug users into a treatment plan.

Prepare for passionate arguments, diverse perspectives, and a deeper understanding of the complex world of mental health. Join Nick and Todd for Mental Health Headlines Hot Takes to engage your mind and challenge your assumptions.

EP 11: HOT TAKES on Survivor Enables Belittling of Neurodivergent Cast and How Daylight Savings Time Impacts Mental Health Nick and Todd are back with more mental health news, ready to dissect the headlines and spark your critical thinking.
