05 Jan 2021 | Defining Adversity | 00:13:46
Trauma and adversity look different for every person. Loss of a loved one, divorce, PTSD, sexual abuse, basically anything imaginable. But there's no "difficulty requirement"—your hard times are hard, and comparing yourself to someone who "has it worse" doesn't take into account that your feelings are valid and they matter. In this episode, we talk about adversity. What it is, what it isn't, and why we'll all experience it at some part of our lives. You'll also hear us briefly discuss post traumatic growth—finding beauty in the ashes. Trauma isn't something we seek out to become stronger, but it's a reality of life—and since that's so, let's see what we can gain from it! Find us on our website or join our Facebook group. We'll see you there! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
05 Jan 2021 | Awareness | 00:11:08
Awareness is one of the most important tools in your life toolbox. It's all about knowing yourself—being acquainted with yourself, your own thoughts, and why you're feeling what you're feeling. In this episode, we talk about how we are not our thoughts and feelings, and how having a thought doesn't define who we are. We discuss being an observer of our own thoughts and how it can help us understand our own mind. Find us on our website or join our Facebook group. We'll see you there! Hosted on Acast. 13 Jan 2021 | Facts vs. Story | 00:17:37
We all go through thousands of experiences every day, each one open to interpretation. Your teenager left their shoes on the floor again—were they being passive agressive or just forgetful? That lady gave you a weird look at the store—or was she just about to sneeze? Sometimes the story we tell is not fact, but our imagination running wild. In this episode, we talk about why humans tell their own stories, what we can to do make sure we are telling ourselves the truth, and how that can affect our lives in a big way. Find us on our website or join our Facebook group. We'll see you there! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

03 Feb 2021 | Getting to Calm | 00:25:22
Our human brains are very complex and we're still trying to figure them out. Different parts are good at some tasks, and not so good at others. However, if we can learn to tap into the more rational parts of our brain, we can gain control and access comfort, peace and joy. In this episode, we talk about "fight, flight, or freeze" responses—sometimes helpful in the short term, but detrimental for the long term! We also discuss how our brain has a natural reaction to threats (perceived or real!), and what we can do to control them. Don't miss this one! Here's the download we promised, giving four ways to help you get calm. Trust us, it's worth a read! Find us on our website or join our Facebook group. We'll see you there! Hosted on Acast. 10 Feb 2021 | The Equation of Life | 00:39:17
The Equation of Life is a framework based on multiple different philosophies and psychological discoveries which we can use to help reveal things to ourselves, about ourselves. It's elegant in its simplicity but covers a wide range of topics (are you intrigued yet?!). Join Heather and Leah this week as they explore the Equation of Life. What is it? How do we use it? How can it help us get to know ourselves better? Find us on our website or join our Facebook group. One last thing—don't forget to get your free download this week about Life's Secret Equation. 24 Feb 2021 | Thought Downloads | 00:24:42
A thought download (or put not-so eloquently, a thought dump) is one of those tools that we truly believe in because we use it a lot! Writing things down, whether it be a stream of consciousness or intentionally separating the good from the bad, allows your brain to slow down. Join Heather and Leah this week as they discuss how writing your thoughts can help you control what you think, discover why you think it, and help you move your thoughts to a more positive space. Also don't forget this week's download! This time, it's a guide to thought downloads. Get it here! Find us on our website or join our Facebook group. See you next week! Hosted on Acast. 17 Feb 2021 | Life is 50/50 | 00:32:02
If you asked everybody what their life's goal is, many people would say "to be happy". But what does "being happy" mean? Does that mean you're happy forever? If you're not happy, have you failed? As weird as it sounds, trying to be happy all the time puts a lot of pressure on us. That pressure can cause anxiety, which can make us less happy (do you see where we're going with this?). Join Heather and Leah this week as they discuss life's ups and downs, and how the good and bad are not permanent (neither of them) and how that's not a bad thing! Also, here's that thought bubble video Leah mentioned. It's a good watch! Find us on our website or join our Facebook group. See you next week! Hosted on Acast. 03 Mar 2021 | Understanding Feelings | 00:28:41
Not feeling your feelings keeps you safe. That works in the short term, but when we run from them, sometimes it can make things much harder in the long term. Join Heather and Leah in this week's episode, which is the first of two about feelings. What are they? Why is facing them important? And how can we 'hack' our reactions to help us weather life's challenges? Find us on our website or join our Facebook group. See you next week! Hosted on Acast. 10 Mar 2021 | The Healthy Way to Deal with Feelings | 00:27:41
This is the second part to our episode on feelings! Join us as we spend some time talking about how to allow, how to process, and how to digest emotion. This is truly the way we gain authority over emotions in order to move forward in life. There's no way around a negative emotion as they say, the only way around is through which means we need to learn to process them. It's a skill that we have to develop in order to move forward and face difficult emotions. One last thing—don't forget this week's download! You can get it by clicking here. 17 Mar 2021 | Language Hacks | 00:31:09
As we've discussed, your mind is a powerful thing—but so is your mouth (or rather, what comes out of it). Words matter, and our own mind is listening to the words we say whether we realize it or not. Join us on this week's episode as we discuss how the language we use is more powerful than we think, how "have to" and "should" are more damaging than we think, and how Yoda basically has all this figured out. Here are the amazing TED Talks and the book we mentioned:

24 Mar 2021 | Neuroplasticity | 00:27:46
We used to think you can't teach an old dog new tricks. However, we now know that, while children are able to heal from their injuries and learn things much faster than adults, we also have the ability to intentionally change our brain. Join Heather and Leah this week as we talk about neuroplasticity. What is it? What do we know about it? And how can using it to our advantage literally let us physically change our brain forever? 31 Mar 2021 | You Made Me Feel | 00:34:00
Contrary to how it might feel, we get to decide how we act. If someone says something offensive to us, we can choose to end the conversation. We can choose to never talk to that person again. What we can't do is control what they think, feel, or do. On today's episode, we discuss how we can take advantage of the choices we do have, even when it seems like we might not have many options. Also, how can we reach "emotional adulthood"? Find us on our website or join our Facebook group. See you next week! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
07 Apr 2021 | Post-Traumatic Growth | 00:32:57
Before you go running and thinking "Post-traumatic growth? That's so not for me." —this information is actually really valuable. As we've talked about numerous times before, trauma in all its glorious forms is something that we are all going to be confronted with either personally or we're going to witness a loved one, experiencing something. Sometimes these traumas can turn into something difficult like PTSD, but sometimes, they can turn into something more. Join us this week as we talk about the magic that is post-traumatic growth. 14 Apr 2021 | Confidence | 00:20:17
Have you ever been in a relationship where someone constantly criticizes you? Maybe they say you're not tall enough, thin enough, smart enough or sexy enough. Even when you do succeed, that person doesn't seem to acknowledge it or share your joy. Sometimes that voice grows louder and louder, because someone else's voice joins theirs: ours. This week, Heather and Leah talk about confidence: what are some exercises we can do to build our own self confidence? What (or who) is our biggest roadblock to building it? 21 Apr 2021 | Unconditional Love | 00:19:11
Where does love come from? Most people would say, it comes from my significant other, my kids, my dog, my family, my friends—movies or commercials or cards lead us to believe that love comes from somebody else. This week, we're here to tell you love is not what you think! Because we know that any feeling is created by a thought, and feelings are created by thoughts, we create our love. 05 May 2021 | Growth Mindset | 00:26:34
Mindset. We've all heard the word, especially in a self improvement setting. But what does it really mean? A mindset is a set of assumptions, methods, or notions held by one person or a group of people. It arises out of a person's worldview or their philosophy of life. Boiled down—it's basically the way we think. Our mindset is an amazing thing, because it shapes the reality of everything we do. It's a lens that colors every And bonus—we can change it ourselves. 12 May 2021 | Anxiety | 00:27:51
How many times do we say "I feel anxious", but we're not really sure why? Anxiety is an emotion, but it also has a physical component, the stress component, which is the fight or flight stress response. The brain gets alerted that you were under a threat. You feel the emotion of anxiety and then your body goes into the fight or flight response. Our body is reacting as if there's danger—but the danger is just inside our mind. Join Heather and Leah this week as they tackle the big topic of anxiety. What is it? Where does it come from? And most importantly, how can we help ourselves feel less of it? It means that being kind to yourself is actually an act of kindness to those around you! Want to learn how can you be more self-compassionate in order to become your own best friend? 26 May 2021 | What Other People Think | 00:35:00
Do you like peaches? Believe it or not, there are people who do not like peaches. You can be the juiciest, most beautiful peach, but there is always someone who's not going to like peaches. But do we worry about it? Who's at fault, if somebody doesn't like peaches, do we blame the peach? There are plenty of peaches and plenty of apples to go around, so be who you want to be! 02 Jun 2021 | Trauma, Stress and Self Regulation with guest Dr. Eric Gentry | 00:50:39
We're pleased to have our very first guest on this episode of Building Resilience, and it's a big one for us! Dr. Eric Gentry of the Forward Facing Institute is an internationally recognized leader in the study and treatment of traumatic stress and compassion fatigue. He has trained over 100,000 health professionals over the past 20 years, and we're two great big fans of his! 09 Jun 2021 | Stress and Mindset | 00:26:03
Sometimes the word "stress" can be used to describe things that are going on inside of us, like our thoughts. Many times, we say our stress is caused by our family, work, school, health, commute, money, COVID (among many, many other things). But what if we were to tell you that your stress is actually caused by none of the above? These stressors are not the cause of your stress. And as long as you will continue to believe that these are causes of stress, we will continue to have the symptoms. Join us this week as we discuss stress—what is it, where does it come from, and how can you use it to your advantage? As always, don't forget to find us on our website and join our Facebook group. 16 Jun 2021 | Overwhelm | 00:33:57
We've all felt overwhelmed before when we have a lot going on at once in our lives. Thoughts like "I'll never get this done" and "I don't have time to do this" get stuck in our minds. These thoughts create a storm of irritation, frustration, and other emotions, which create the situation of overwhelm. Fortunately, overwhelm isn't something that happens to us—it's a state that we actually create with our thoughts, because our thoughts create our feelings. Even though it can be so unhelpful, we're doing it to ourselves! This week, we discuss where overwhelm comes from, some strategies on how to tackle it, and how doing things imperfectly might just save us. 23 Jun 2021 | The Brain & Gut Connection with Hollie Crome | 00:33:57
Since experts have been establishing such strong connections between the gut and the brain, it makes sense we wanted to have today's guest on our show! We're lucky enough to be joined by Hollie Chrome of Hollie Chrome Holistic Wellness. Hollie specializes in supporting women in feeling empowered about their Health and Wellness through creating and achieving their own unique Wellness Vision. Hollie works with many women who have felt like they were never successful in achieving their health goals, like they were in a continual cycle of starting over with their health and who felt like factors such as stress, lack of support and lack of nutritional knowledge were barriers to their success in achieving their definition of optimal health. Hollie’s work is served by a strong foundation in the Mind-Body connection, and how this connection is critical to success in optimal and functional health. Hollie is a mother of 3 and when she isn’t empowering women to finally achieve their Wellness Vision, she is sewing, hiking and creating healthy low-sugar treats. We need to nourish our minds through mindset practices, which we talk about all the time, but in addition, we need to nourish our bodies through nutrition and movement. Studies are being done on the gut-brain connection but it is still a relatively unknown topic. Even scientists and researchers do not fully understand the connection between them, but they have established that there is a very strong, scientific connection between our brains and our thought processes and what happens in the gut and vice versa. Today, Hollie is going to go over what is known about the gut-brain connection. How can we improve our gut health? What do we do that's damaging our gut health? And what can looking after our gut do for our mind? Find out on today's episode! As always, don't forget to find us on our website and join our Facebook group. 30 Jun 2021 | Languishing | 00:24:59
Since 2020 rolled around, there has been a lot of talk about the concept of "languishing". If you haven't heard about it before, it's a state where you're tired and overwhelmed, but you kind of want to do things. You're lacking energy, enthusiasm, and motivation. You're not completely depressed because you do believe that things will eventually get better. "Languishing" was coined by Dr. Corey Keys. It's not depression, but it's the absence and insufficiency of feeling good and functioning well. He said it's when you experience an absence of the good stuff, purpose, belonging, contribution, satisfaction, and interest in life. This absence can feel like a real piercing void in your day to day life. Today, we talk about how to recognize languishing in your own mind, and what strategies you can use to live with it. 07 Jul 2021 | The Four Tendencies | 00:27:26
This is an exciting episode for us, because it was based on a book that we refer to all the time—it can make such a big difference in understanding and dealing with relationships of all kinds: with your partner, your kids, your friends, your neighbors...pretty much anyone you meet! The book is The Four Tendencies, by Gretchen Rubin, the author of the well-known book, The Happiness Project. She spent years studying happiness and habits. She found that different strategies were working for different people: some are morning people, some are night people. Some do better when they abstain from things, others do better in moderation. She was curious as to why certain people do certain things, which led her to create this book! This week, we explore the four tendencies. Which tendency do you have? What about the people in your life? And how can knowing that information change how you interact with them? As always, don't forget to find us on our website and join our Facebook group. 14 Jul 2021 | Mindfulness and Meditation | 00:33:06
Mindfulness and meditation are two words thrown a lot in the world of mental health. But the question is, how are they different? Simply put, meditation is focusing on nothing and mindfulness is focusing on something (that's an oversimplification, but it's a good start) Studies have shown that both mindfulness and meditation can lower stress, and even help your sleep (did we mention it's free?)! On today's episode of the Building Resilience podcast, we discuss how to practice meditation and mindfulness, the benefits, and the science! 21 Jul 2021 | Grief with Krista St-Germain | 00:38:18

She is a Master Certified Life Coach, grief expert, widow, mom and host of The Widowed Mom Podcast. When her husband was killed by a drunk driver in 2016, Krista’s life was completely and unexpectedly flipped upside down. After therapy helped her unfurl from the fetal position, Krista discovered Life Coaching, Post Traumatic Growth and learned the tools she needed to move forward and create a future she could get excited about. Now she coaches and teaches other widows so they can love life again, too. Grief is not just experiencing the death of somebody—it's really the death of a life, whether it's like your past life, or the death of your future. We're going to explore what grief does to us, both physically and emotionally, and the ways we can learn to live with it. 28 Jul 2021 | The 7 Keys to Resilience | 00:23:33
When it comes to your emotional and mental health, it can be hard to even know where to begin to improve. It's so hard to even tell where you currently are—much less where you should be heading. Luckily, there's a way to help map that out. What if we told you there was a 56 item test that can help you get a snapshot of your resilience in distinct areas? But what exactly is the resilience quotient? How can it help us get an aerial view of where we're at? We'll talk about these things and more—you won't want to miss today's episode! 04 Aug 2021 | All or Nothing Thinking | 00:22:15
If you've been listening to us long enough, you'll see that we are constantly saying our thoughts are 100%. Sometimes it doesn't feel that way— because when we think a thought over and over again, it becomes a belief which actually starts to feel like a fact. It is true and there's nothing we can do about it. Appearing in our mind. What also happens is sometimes our brain. Be efficient. We'll think the same thing over and over and over and over and over again, and develop a pattern of thinking. And this works well if it's a good pattern or a helpful thought, but it's not so great when it's not. Getting stuck in our own thinking like this is called a thinking trap or congnitive distortions now in psychology. We all have patterns that our brain prefers—that's just how the brain is designed. However, it is helpful for us to know what our own thinking traps are. In this episode, we'll discuss how to identify your thinking traps, and how to keep your thoughts more level. 11 Aug 2021 | Thinking Traps | 00:23:07
SNAP! Just like a mouse trap, a thinking trap lures us in and before we know anything is wrong, Recognizing these mental pitfalls is so important that we are going to have to split this over two episodes. Karen Reivich and Andrew Shatté introduced four tenets to resilience which we're going to talk about today: 1) life change is possible, 2) thinking, 3) tunnel vision, and 4) fortune telling. These may seem pretty simple, but recognizing them early can play a huge factor in controlling our thoughts. Find out how to spot this sticky mind bait, strategies to avoid getting stuck there, and don't forget to stick around for part 2! 18 Aug 2021 | Thinking Traps (Pt. 2) | 00:24:30
In our last episode, we talked about six different mind traps—this week, we'll talk about even more (there's a reason we had to split this topic into two episodes!). Learning to identify what these mind traps are is like being a defensive driver. If you learn what signs make a road dangerous, you can largely avoid pot holes because you know what to look for. In this episode, we share some personal anecdotes to illustrate some more common thinking traps; overgeneralizing, catastophizing, and more. Getting caught in one of these thinking traps WILL impact your mental health, it WILL impact your self-confidence and your self-esteem and it WILL impact your relationship. So, if you find yourself trapped in a thinking trap, you're in the right place (and if you want to talk about it, definitely reach out!). You can find us on our website and join our Facebook group. 25 Aug 2021 | The 3 P's | 00:13:18
Everybody loves some good alliteration and abbreviation, which is why we've brought you today's episode—The 3 P's! These three "p" words (personalization, permanence, and pervasiveness), are a quick shorthand from Dr. Martin Seligman (the father of positive psychology) for today's subject. We're going to talk about protective factors—mental strategies to help insulate our minds, to help us build resilience and to weather the storms of life. Join us on today's episode to discuss how these three simple P words can help us shift our perspective, build our mental fortitude, and helps us focus on what is right with us, instead of what's wrong (and to create meaning from what it is we want in life). 01 Sep 2021 | 10-10-10 | 00:23:40
10-10-10. Three numbers, but also a life tool to help you make decisions differently and proactively—by deliberately considering their consequences in the immediate present, the near term and the distant future. Should I quit my job? Should I end this relationship? Should I buy this house? Should I skip this meeting? Should I go to the party? How will this decision affect me in 10 minutes? 10 months? 08 Sep 2021 | Creating Cognitive Reserve | 00:23:17
How you process information. Problem solving. Reasoning. How you accomplish your goals. These are all cognitive skills. They impact our language skills, how we read, how we write, how we understand information we hear and how we express ourselves through speech. When people say they're having a hard time reading, they may actually be struggling with focus or concentration, or retaining the information or processing it. It's not necessarily reading. And this. Applies to how we understand information in a conversation as well. It's not necessarily your comprehension skills—it could be your attention skills. So many of these skills are really closely integrated and that's what we work on when people have cognitive communication disorder. Today, we're going to talk about cognitive reserve—a term that neuroscientists coined to basically understand why some individuals are able to remain cognitively healthy—and remain healthier despite biological adversity, even warding off disease, such as Alzheimer's or social adversity, like stressors or personal losses. In today's episode, we'll examine the research, as well as explore ways to expand our own cognitive reserve. 15 Sep 2021 | Gratitude Builds Fortitude with guest Holly Bertone | 00:26:39
Today we are lucky enough to have Holly Bertone, PMP, CNHP as our guest—#1 Amazon bestselling author of the book Thriving in the Workplace with Autoimmune Disease: Know Your Rights, Resolve Conflict, and Reduce Stress, the first book ever to educate others on Autoimmune Disease as a legal disability in the U.S. workplace. Holly is currently the President and CEO of Pink Fortitude, LLC, and founder of Fortitude.Academy. As a breast cancer and Hashimoto’s survivor, her passion is to help women view their chronic illness as a gift and unwrap resilience using a proven method to build fortitude with gratitude (no wonder we wanted to talk to her, right?!). On today's episode, we talk with Holly about building fortitude—how the challenges she has faced have helped her view life through a new set of eyes, and how she used gratitude (and other strategies) to cope with these difficulties. 22 Sep 2021 | Limiting Money Beliefs with guest Molly Claire | 00:31:30
Money! We all use it. We all earn it. But talking about it? That's another story. Molly Claire was one of those people—but one day, she realized that her beliefs about money were not only hers alone, she realized that her own thoughts were part of what was limiting her. On this week's episode of Building Resilience, we talk about money beliefs (we all have them!). What are your money beliefs? How do they limit you? 29 Sep 2021 | Shame Resilience | 00:24:24
Some feelings we feel day-to-day are useful. Some not so much. And some can be actively desctructive. Today we're talking about a concept that everyone reading this will be familiar with—and that is shame. It's that voice which says words such as "I am not lovable", or "I'm not good enough". Shame causes people to feel trapped, powerless and isolated. In today's episode, we want to discuss what shame is—and possibly even more importantly, what shame isn't. How is it different from guilt? Is it ever useful for us to feel shame? And how can we take advantage of self talk in order to help morph these feelings of shame into things like remorse or guilt (the good kind—the one that helps us improve!)? 06 Oct 2021 | Anti-Fragility | 00:19:11
So many things in this life are learned from trial and error—even something like walking! However, our parents didn't get mad because we fell down while learning—can you imagine? On the contrary! They expect a baby to be a little shaky and they're definitely going to fall. This is a basic human concept called "anti-fragility"—getting up when we fall and trying again, and recognizing that's part of the learning process. Join us this week in our discussion about anti-fragility—how we can learn about this insanely important concept from people like J. K. Rowling, Michael Jordan, Oprah, and.....our own muscles? 13 Oct 2021 | 100% Responsibility and 0% Excuses | 00:27:47
It seems as if some people don't think that anything is their responsibility and they have all kinds of excuses—why they can't change things that affect their life negatively. People say things like "I couldn't help it" and "It isn't my fault", but what that really does is it tries to eliminate responsibility. Today we talk about the concept of "100% Responsibility and 0% Excuses"—it may sound harsh, but it's vital! "No excuses" doesn't mean that valid reasons don't exist. It really means that we don't surrender to the excuses that could keep us from stepping up in life. No excuses means recognizing that while some excuses may be true, they are almost never useful. Learn how you can take life by the horns and reject the excuses that would hold you back. 20 Oct 2021 | Meditation with Guest Sabina Ravalli | 00:28:34
Meditation is a topic that every life coach and wellness expert talks about. But it's so much more than just "ohm" and "ah"—it's a way to teach our mind and body to heal itself. We've all heard so much about what meditation is, but what are the benefits? And how can a beginner just "release" stress and discomfort? To explore these questions and more on the rich topic of meditation, we are joined by Sabina Ravalli. She has over 10 years of experience providing her clients with total mind, body, and lifestyle practices that create massive transformation in their life and career. As a shy introvert, struggling with her fear of marketing her passions to the world, she put herself on a mission to fall in love with being on camera. The tool she discovered led to the development of a 12 week one-on-one coaching program that can shift any camera, shy entrepreneur into a confident, authentic, and magnetic communicator to their brand. 27 Oct 2021 | Tiny Improvements Compound over Time | 00:18:01
When we think about future self and all of the goals we want to achieve, we tend to look at the end goal, not so much the journey. Unfortunately for us, delayed gratification doesn't tend to come naturally. Focusing on the finish line means that we don't always achieve the results we want because we can get in our own way. But building a habit is exactly that—building. The tiny changes we make from day to day make all the difference. On today's episode, we discuss those tiny changes we make, and how small choices can make a serious impact. 03 Nov 2021 | Transitions | 00:16:55
This is a big episode—I am flying solo. As of October 1st, Heather and I decided to close up shop on H & L life coaching and head our separate ways. However, I am excited to take over the podcast and to continue to bring you all the things that will help you create the life that you want. The podcast will continue just as it has—there's just a lot more Leah! Because of this, I thought that life transitions would be a very appropriate topic to talk about today. They can be good ones or they can be bad ones. They can start off as being bad and end up being really good or vice versa. They can bring up all the emotions. And of course you know I'm going to tell you, you need to feel your emotions (more on that too!). When some people think of the phrase "Self Care", they have images pop in their head of bubble baths, manicures, or a massage. While self care can definitely include those things, it means so much more. Many of you don't have a natural instinct for self care, and while you may think that's selfless, it's probably doing more damage than you think. 09 Feb 2022 | The Manual | 00:21:02
A manual sounds like a pretty handy thing to have—to help you troubleshoot your washing machine or fix your phone. But when we make imaginary manuals about the people in our lives, it can be anything but helpful. On today's episode we discuss not just a manual, but THE Manual! It's not a physical book—it's a frame of mind that can seriously give the relationships in our lives a hard time. Spouses, children, in-laws, clients, friends—you name it! Basically, when we create a mental "manual" about the perfect friend, the perfect daughter, the perfect husband, we're setting the people in our lives up for failure. But don't worry, we'll also discuss some ways to "de-manualify" your thinking and to make you more content with the situations you're in. 16 Feb 2022 | Therapy vs. Coaching | 00:20:02

However, along the way, we'll inevitably come across thoughts like "Am I good enough?", "Am I ruining my kids?" or even "Should I even be a parent?". 02 Mar 2022 | Limiting Beliefs | 00:29:42
We've all heard the famous quote "whether you think you can or can't, you're right". While that's a little over used and maybe a little over simplified, the fundamental truth it teaches is actually correct. In our day to day lives, we have worn paths into our brain that our thoughts will follow—beliefs about things we assume are true because, well, we've never questioned them. Some of these beliefs are factual but many (if not the majority) are actually just created in our own minds. On today's episode of Building Resilience, we're going to talk about these limiting beliefs. Where do they come from? How can we learn to recognize them and distinguish them from the actual truth? And how can we fundamentally change the way we think? We'll get into all this and more, so don't miss out! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
09 Mar 2022 | More About Stress | 00:27:36
Imagine you got asked to do a new project at work, and imagine it causes you a lot of stress thinking about it—while another member of your team might be super excited! It's the same project, so what's the difference, you ask? Perspective. If you believe that it's the environment that causes you stress, you're helpless until the environment or the circumstance change, which we know is hard to do. Sounds familiar, doesn't it? The circumstance does not cause our stress does not cause our feelings—it's actually what goes on in your body and your mind that create your stress. It's the story that you tell it's the thoughts that you have. On this episode of Building Resilience, we're going to talk about stress (again). How can we reframe our stresses and view them through a new lens? Is stress always bad? 30 Mar 2022 | The Role of An SLP in Concussion Management | 00:43:09
It's still Brain Injury Awareness Month in the United States, so I thought we'd share some additional information about concussions. To help me do this, I've invited along my colleague, Danielle Hyde. Danielle Hyde is a Speech Language Pathologist and the owner of Neuro Connections, a private practice that provides communication, cognitive and swallowing services mainly for adults after concussion, brain injury and stroke in Ontario, Canada. Danielle has been working with adults with neurological impairments since graduating with her Master’s in Speech-Language Pathology in 2012. She has worked in a variety of medical settings both in the US and Canada. Danielle is passionate about concussion advocacy and education including the SLPs role in concussion management and recovery. 06 Apr 2022 | The Amazing Race | 00:13:18
One of my favorite guilty pleasures (alright maybe not so guilty!) is the show The Amazing Race. It has made me think a lot about how the competition is a great analogy for life. We watch The Amazing Race not just for the end destination, but for the journey. If you focus on doing your best on each leg of the race, focus on working through each challenge, and work as a team to get stronger, you are more likely to keep going. When you focus on the process, what you're doing in that exact moment, you actually are always in the present. 12 Apr 2022 | Our 6 Human Needs | 00:17:52
As a life coach myself, I feel like it's important to get back to basics with some of my clients. And " Maslow's heirarchy of needs" is a great way to do it (with a twist by Tony Robbins). Basically, every human has levels of needs that need to be met first—like someone without a home needs shelter and food before they need wifi. It's a good way to check in and see what needs to happen next in your life! Today we're talking about basic human needs—and how we can reach to attain them. 20 Apr 2022 | Write Your Own Eulogy | 00:11:03
Death. It's one of those things that will affect every single person on earth at some point. Whether it's your first beloved pet or a dear friend or relative, we will all have to experience it second-hand. Like it or not, it's going to happen to us too. And I have a bit of a morbid solution to help you cope: writing your own eulogy. The concept can be scary, sure, but in this episode of Building Resilience I'll explain why I think this can be such a therapeutic activity—and what it can teach you about yourself. 27 Apr 2022 | 25 Truths I've Learned | 00:23:45
What's the podcast equivalent of a clip show? Because this might be pretty close! I recently turned 50, and as many people do when they hit a milestone, I got pretty reflective about my life—the lessons I've learned, the ways I've grown, and most importantly, the things I wish I had known earlier. I could go on all day, but on today's episode, I give you 25 of the truths I live by every day—mantras, lessons, and things I've learned—which you can hopefully learn from as well. My hope is that at least one of these truths resonates with you and it can be something you carry with you! Visit me on Facebook or Instagram. In a first of a series I'm making this month about communication—today we're talking about connection. Every interaction we have with another person requires some level of connection; buying something at the store, calling your bank, helping a friend, or giving someone a hand. Today I'm going to talk about why connection is necessary—and why we're wired for it as humans, how we literally rely on it to survive, and what we can do to help our human connections thrive. Join me May 25th for this month’s Master Your Brain Masterclass: Master Your Communication. In this Masterclass you will learn:

I'm doing a series of episodes in May about communication. After last week's episode about connection—I wanted to talk about what happens when that connection fails. And I've got just the person to help us explore that: Sheila MacDonald. Sheila MacDonald is a speech-language pathologist who is passionate about communication and rebuilding competence in those who have experienced communication disability after brain injury. Her work includes the development of two standardized tests, the CCCABI referral tool, practice guidelines, research, and international collaboration. Her acclaimed clinical short courses draw on years of experience in both hospitals and community practice where she now assists individuals with return to social, academic, and workplace communications. 01 Jun 2022 | Clean Pain and Dirty Pain | 00:30:42
When you hear the word "pain" you probably instantly think it's a negative. And while pain is never going to feel "positive", there are different types of pain. Today, we're going to talk about two different types of pain—clean pain and dirty pain. Which one is healthy, can help you heal, learn, and move forward, and which one hurts, can postpone our recovery, and that we can actually choose. Visit me on Facebook or Instagram. 08 Jun 2022 | Navigating the C's | 00:18:45
Just like sailing an ocean, life can throw you some unexpected waves. As I thought back on some of the lessons I've learned recently I realized that all the important emotions for me seem to start with the letter C and it's kind of true—the letter C is everywhere along the path to confidence and resilience. So I wanted to share that path with you today—as well as an easy to remember them (I'm sure you'll "C" what I mean). Visit me on Facebook or Instagram. 15 Jun 2022 | Who is in Your Car | 00:17:33
I love coming up with analogies. I love hearing them. If you're still a fan of this podcast, you probably are too! So picture this and let's see if it works for you: We are all in a car driving along to our destination: life. The question is who is driving your car? Now sometimes we allow our survival brain (or the monkey as I often call it) to be driving. Fea, and other emotions (which make up our survival brain) are all very real, and we do need them along in our journey, but they are not necessarily good drivers. On today's episode I'll help you to identify who's driving, who's your passenger, and what to do if you want to switch who's driving! Visit me on Facebook or Instagram. 29 Jun 2022 | Creating Joy | 00:19:03
"Joy" is a word we all know, but maybe don't think about the meaning too much. It has a similar feel to "happy"—but it means oh so much more. On today's episode, I talk about the true meaning of joy. 06 Jul 2022 | The Power of Questions | 00:20:06
We've all got a superpower. It can catch attention, plant ideas in peoples' minds, and help us learn. That superpower? Asking questions. Since our brain is always a work in progress, science has shown that questions are a way to break out of the ruts and worn-down neural pathways in order to create new habits, try new things, and challenge our mindsets. On this episode of Building Resilience, we're going to talk all about these questions—and how we can use them to our advantage in relationships and all over our life. 13 Jul 2022 | Grounding with the Fives | 00:18:43
We have five ways to interact with the world around us. It's how we percieve everything in our lives. Those ways? Our senses. Because our senses only allow us to percieve the world in real time, they can be used to ground ourselves. On this episode of Building Resilience, I'm going to go over how to best do that—demonstrating using some examples in my own life as well as some thoughts on how YOU can use these techniques. 20 Jul 2022 | The Five Channels | 00:16:30
There are lots and lots of benefits about planning in the future. However, being in the present is also really important for your nervous system—reminding your nervous system, it's safe. It doesn't have to worry about the threats that it perceives in the past or in the future, because none of those threats exist when you are in the here and now. On this episode of Building Resilience, I'm going to explain the explain a tool called "the five channels", originally coined by Bebe Hansen (if you like my interpretation, please check hers out too!). 03 Aug 2022 | The 10 Principles of Neuroplasticity | 00:20:37
The human brain is an amazing thing. Arguably one of the most amazing things about it is its ability to adapt to the situations we put it in. That's called "neuroplasticity". Learning about the brain can actually help us understand how the brain functions (even when things are okay) what you can do to boost, to change, to improve, and even protect your brain. Our brain health is so key to our quality of life—it's really key to our physical health, our relationships, our overall resilience. 10 Aug 2022 | Advice and Criticism | 00:20:00
The other day I came across a quote: "Don't take criticism from someone you would not go to for advice". It was such a good quote, I knew a social media post alone wouldn't suffice—I had to make it a whole podcast episode. Taking criticism and advice are two sides of the same coin, but at their core, they aren't really that different. Anybody can offer you words—you then get to decide how you interpret those words. On today's epsiode of Building Resilience, we talk about advice and criticism. How are they the same? How are they different? And what does all of this have to do with slime? 07 Sep 2022 | Validation | 00:24:46
Usually, when you hear someone like me say the word "validation", you probably already think you know what I'm about today. "Don't seek validation from others", right? Well, yes. But not exactly. 14 Sep 2022 | Worry Time | 00:23:56
Something new or scary happens in your life—new job, financial trouble, you name it. Your brain's natural reaction might be to worry about it. But what if I told you that worry is actually really desctructive and frankly, not even necessary? On this episode of Building Resilience, we're going to talk about worry. On this episode of Building Resilience, we talk about the proven benefits of writing in a diary. 05 Oct 2022 | The Gap and the Gain | 00:26:43
I'm a big reader, and every once in a while I come across an idea or a book that I just HAVE to share with everybody. When it has to do with my clients or listeners, even more so! Today's one of those days. The book "The Gap and the Gain" by Dan Sullivan really hit me hard—and as soon as I read about the concept I just knew you all would love it. In a nutshell, there are two sort of mindsets we can be in, "the gap" and "the gain". When we're in "the gap", our thoughts tend toward thinking what we lack, while in "the gain", we think of our potential and what we've already got. The best part? Our situation doesn't have to change in order to switch mindsets—which means that those thoughts are completely within our control.

12 Oct 2022 | Seven Questions to Measure Your Gain | 00:17:48
Last week, I shared an episode called "The Gap and the Gain", which follows the premise of an excellent book with the same title by Dan Sullivan and Benjamin Hardy. I recommend listening to that episode first if you haven't heard it yet, but if you haven't heard it yet, the gist is this: you can have a "gap" mindset of what you lack, or a "gain" mindset of your potential. In this episode, we talk about ways to stay in that more positive "gain" mindset—seven questions you can ask yourself to be exact!
