18 May 2022Interview #9 | Claire McGowan (Writer and Lecturer)00:36:06
I welcome Northern Irish writer and lecturer Claire McGowan to the show in this interview episode to discuss Ireland's mysterious Vanishing Triangle cases. In 1990s Ireland, eight women were abducted and presumed murdered. They vanished without a trace, and no one was ever charged. Bestselling crime author Claire McGowan was determined to find out why. In her book on the case, Claire delivers a righteous polemic against the culture of secrecy, victim-blaming and shame that left those women's bodies unfound, their fates unknown, and their assailants unpunished. Claire grew up in a small village in Northern Ireland and now lives in London. She writes crime fiction as Claire McGowan and contemporary women's fiction as Eva Woods. 15 Feb 2024S12E07 | The Murder of Ermatati Rodgers (Gwersyllt, Wrexham, 2008)00:34:02
In this episode, I tell the story of Ermatati Rodgers, a 41-year-old woman killed in Gwersyllt, Wrexham, in April 2008. Tati (as she was known) arrived in the UK from her native Indonesia in 1996 with her then-husband. On January 4, 2008, she unexpectedly disappeared, with her best friend raising the alarm the next day after she failed to meet her for lunch as planned. It took 14 months, but forensic teams finally found her remains in March 2009. A post-mortem quickly established that a third party had likely caused her death. Within a week of her body being found, Polish national Lukasz Reszpondek confessed that it was he who'd buried Tati; however, he denied murdering her. Mr Justice Lloyd Jones handed Reszpondek a life sentence with a minimum term of 18 years in November 2009 after he was found guilty of Tati's murder by way of a majority verdict. 20 Oct 2024Interview #63 | Investigating the Thames Torso Murders: Sarah Bax Horton Discusses Her New Book 'Arm of Eve'00:40:50
I welcome true crime writer, researcher and analyst Sarah Bax Horton to the show in this interview episode to discuss her new book 'Arm of Eve: Investigating the Thames Torso Killer'. Jack the Ripper is often called the world’s most notorious unidentified killer, but he was not the first modern serial killer on the streets of London. Before him was another murderer who hunted from the River Thames – one arguably more sadistic and mercurial. The Thames Torso Killer has always lurked in the Ripper’s shadow, despite the fact he murdered and dismembered at least four people over two years. He started to kill in 1887, over a year before the Ripper, and his last murder was in 1889, almost ten months after the death of Mary Jane Kelly, the Ripper’s last victim. In Arm of Eve, Sarah conducts her own investigation and uses modern criminal profiling to come up with her own suspect – a known criminal who knew the Thames like the back of his hand. Billie-Jo Jenkins was a bright and lively 13-year-old with her whole life ahead of her. But in February 1997, her world was cruelly cut short in one of the most perplexing and heartbreaking unsolved murders in the UK. The horrific crime shocked the nation, sparking a media frenzy and a police investigation that pointed to a suspect close to home. Her foster father was arrested, found guilty, and sentenced to life in prison. But controversy struck when he was acquitted after serving just six years, leaving Billie-Jo's family and the public grappling with unanswered questions. 14 Jun 2023Against All Odds: The Unbelievable Story of Alison Botha00:28:50
In a departure from my usual coverage of British murder cases, I bring you an off-season episode that delves into a profoundly compelling story from South Africa. As told by my guest Lorraine Purdon, the case of Alison Botha is not a murder story. Instead, it's an awe-inspiring account of survival. I feel compelled to issue a severe content warning for this episode because it contains alarming and graphic elements. I have no problem admitting that I was uncomfortable hearing some aspects of the raw and brutal nature of what happened to Alison. Nevertheless, I believe it is crucial to shine a light on it as it showcases the remarkable strength of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable horrors. In December 1994, Alison was abducted in the city of Gqeberha, known as Port Elizabeth at the time, and subjected to a brutal assault by two men that seemed destined to end in tragedy. Left for dead in a remote location, she faced insurmountable odds against survival. Lorraine recounts Alison's incredible escape, her fight for justice and her unwavering dedication to empowering violence survivors. ***If you or someone you know has been affected by sexual assault or rape, dedicated helplines are available to provide guidance, resources, and a listening ear to survivors. 30 Jan 2025S16E07 | Nicole Waterhouse (York, North Yorkshire, 2013)00:32:18
When Nicole Waterhouse and Karen Browne attended a dating event in York, they couldn’t have known that one of the men they met would soon change their lives forever. Jeremy Green, an ex-Army officer with a dishonorable discharge, went on a couple of dates with Karen before reappearing unexpectedly at the two women’s flat in October 2013 under a seemingly innocent pretense. His true intentions, however, were anything but harmless. What followed was a brutal and prolonged assault that left Nicole dead and Karen forever scarred, both physically and emotionally. This harrowing case serves as a chilling reminder that the capacity for violence can be hidden beneath a seemingly innocent façade. 22 Dec 2022Jelka Pesic, Milan Nenadic and David Segoviano | The Murder of Alexandra Pesic | Feat. Bobbie Holmes00:41:39
In the sixth volume of Killer British Murder Stories, Bobbie Holmes of Killer Stories tells me the story of Alexandra Pesic's murder. Former beauty queen and dental assistant Alexandra met a fellow Yugoslavian woman named Jelka Pesic whilst attending an open house with her mum in Vancouver, Canada. Alexandra was soon introduced to Jelka's son, Joe, and the pair went on to marry. Jelka was an overbearing "monster-in-law", making life extremely difficult for Alexandra. Finally, things got so bad that Alexandra divorced Joe and was granted custody of their son, Brandon. Inspired by the plot of a true crime book focusing on the murder case of Cindy James, Jelka planned the murder of Alexandra with the help of hitmen Milan Nenadic and David Segoviano. Jelka, Milan and David all received life sentences for Alenxadra's murder, which equates to 25 years in Canada. 25 Oct 2023S11E05 | The Murder of Fred Barras (Emneth Hungate, Norfolk, 1999)00:36:49
In this episode, I tell the story of Fred Barras, a 16-year-old boy killed in Emneth Hungate, Norfolk, on August 20, 1999. Fred and his friend, 29-year-old Brendon Fearon, were burgling the isolated farmhouse Bleak House when its owner, 54-year-old farmer Tony Martin, caught them in the act and unloaded his shotgun at them. Both men were hit, but only Fred died due to his injuries. Tony was handed a life sentence in April 2000 after being found guilty of murder. His conviction was later reduced to manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility in October 2001 after a successful appeal. Receiving a retrospective five-year prison sentence, Tony served just over three and was released in August 2003. Almost a quarter of a century after the shooting at Bleak House, this case remains one of the most divisive in British history. **The following is NOT a sponsored message** If you are experiencing domestic abuse or are concerned that someone you know is, please consider contacting one of the following charities: Refuge (the largest specialist domestic abuse organisation in the UK): 0808 2000 247 Respect (Men's Advice Line): 0808 801 0327 Galop (the UK’s LGBT+ anti-abuse charity): 0800 999 5428 Women's Aid (a national charity working to end domestic abuse against women and children): helpline@womensaid.org.uk REMEMBER - If you are in immediate danger, please call 999! He met Ashleigh on Facebook after posing as a 19-year-old named Peter Cartwright. The day after the murder, Cleveland Police arrested Chapman in connection with a hit-and-run offence dating back to October 2008. Once inside a police cell, Chapman confessed that he had killed somebody the previous evening and led the police to Ashleigh's body. 19 Feb 2024Interview #51 | The Truth About My Murder: Dr Richard Shepherd discusses the TRUE CRIME original series' second season00:33:29
I welcome back retired forensic pathologist Dr Richard Shepherd to the show in this interview episode. In December 2023, TRUE CRIME (formerly CBS Reality) announced that its original true crime series, 'The Truth About My Murder', would return to the screens in 2024 after the international success of its first season. The new batch of episodes welcomes back Dr Shepherd, one of the world’s leading forensic scientists, as he tackles ten new complex murder cases (six from the UK and four from the USA), guiding the audience through each victim’s post-mortem to reveal the truth behind the crimes they were subjected to. Using ground-breaking technology called an 'Anatomage Table' that uses digitally scanned sample bodies, Dr Shepherd investigates various murder cases where pathology played a leading role in solving them and bringing the killers to justice. The series premiered on TRUE CRIME on January 9, 2024. All episodes are available to watch on WATCH FREE UK after being broadcast. 27 Sep 2023S11E01 | The Murder of Kelly Hyde (Ammanford, Carmarthenshire, 2007)00:30:06
In this episode, I tell the story of Kelly Hyde, a 24-year-old woman murdered in Ammanford, Carmarthenshire, on September 27, 2007. Kelly dropped her car off at a local garage that morning as its MOT test was booked. As she walked home with her dog Scrappy, she was followed by a 16-year-old boy as she walked on a bridle path. Adrian Jones did not know Kelly, and to date, no motive has been established for what he did, but that morning, he beat Kelly to death using a piece of gym equipment. He was arrested just days after Kelly's body was discovered on September 30 in a stream near a disused colliery. Seeing as a minimum of 12 years imprisonment was where the Judge had to begin, Mr Justice Davis handed Jones an 11-year and 79-day sentence, given that Jones had already spent 286 days in custody. Jones attempted to appeal his murder conviction, but the Court of Appeal rejected it in October 2009. After Jones died of natural causes on February 18, 2018, his appeal continued, with his family pursuing the case and referring it to the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC), who referred it to the Court of Appeal. 20 Nov 2023Interview #45 | Crime and Punishment in Tudor England with April Taylor00:41:26
I welcome April Taylor to the show in this interview episode to discuss her new book, 'Crime and Punishment in Tudor England: From Alchemists to Zealots.' The book tells the story of the law's enactment and its penalties from Henry VII to Elizabeth I. It's arranged in alphabetical order of crimes and recounts tales of blackmail, infanticide, kidnapping, heresy, and sumptuary laws. Researched meticulously and told with occasional low-key humour, the book tells stories such as that of John Daniell and how he tried to blackmail the Earl of Essex; the Stafford insurrection of 1486, the first serious opposition to the new king; the activities of conman extraordinaire, Gregory Wisdom, and many more. The book also includes Tavern Talk (snippets of quirky information). April was born in the historic county of Lincolnshire and caught the history bug from a young age. She has always been fascinated by the physical manifestation of past events, particularly the Tudor period. That interest deepened when she discovered one of the most important events of Henry VIII's reign, the Lincolnshire Rebellion that led to the Pilgrimage of Grace in 1536, which started eight miles from where April was born. 'Crime and Punishment in Tudor England: From Alchemists to Zealots' was released on September 20, 2023, and is available to purchase here: Crime and Punishment in Tudor England | Pen and Sword History ***This interview was recorded on October 24, 2023. In the mid-seventies, a wave of terror swept across multiple English counties, culminating in the tragic murder of 17-year-old Lesley Whittle. A promising student and beloved daughter, Lesley was kidnapped and held for ransom - a nightmare that would grip her family and shock the nation. But Lesley wasn't the only victim of her captor. In the months leading up to her abduction, three sub-postmasters - Donald Skepper, Derek Astin and Sidney Grayland - had been ruthlessly targeted, each meeting a devastating fate. Despite their attempts to protect themselves and their communities, these innocent men became the victims of a chilling string of attacks, which led investigators on a relentless pursuit of one of Britain’s most notorious killers. 26 Jul 2023S10E04 | The Murder of Jane Longhurst | Villain: Graham Coutts00:34:25
In this episode, I discuss the story of Jane Longhurst, a 31-year-old music teacher murdered by her best friend's partner. This chilling story of obsession, murder and justice began on March 14, 2003, when Graham Coutts killed Jane in his Hove flat. Coutts had been obsessed with physically harming women during sex since the age of 15 and fantasised about murdering someone in such a manner. He was initially handed a life sentence in February 2004 at Lewes Crown Court, but his charge was later quashed. A re-trial in 2007 ended with the same outcome, with Coutts being handed a life sentence at the Old Bailey that July with a minimum term of 26 years. 26 Jan 2023S08E04 | Gordon Park | The Murder of Carol Park00:40:20
In this episode, I tell the story of Gordon and Carol Park. In July 1976, Gordon Park returned to his Leece home from a family trip to Blackpool with his three children to discover that his wife, Carol, was missing. In August 1997, 21 years after she went missing, Carol Park's body was found by amateur divers in Coniston Water, a lake in the Lake District. Gordon was arrested on suspicion of Carol's murder in that same month, but the charges were later dropped. However, he was re-arrested in January 2004 and found guilty of Carol's murder in January 2005. In 2010, on his 66th birthday, Gordon Park took his own life. A posthumous appeal of his conviction was referred to the Court of Appeal in October 2018, but it was dismissed in May 2020. This incredibly divisive case was referred to in the media as 'The Lady in the Lake trial'. ⁣⁣For all things British Murders, please visit my website:⁣ https://www.britishmurders.com/⁣ Intro music:⁣ David John Brady - 'Throw Down the Gauntlet'⁣ https://linktr.ee/davidjohnbradymusic⁣ References:⁣ www.britishmurders.com/gordonpark/ Learn more about your ad choices. 31 Oct 2024S15E06 | Tania Moore (Ashbourne, Derbyshire, 2004)00:31:28
In 2004, the shocking murder of award-winning showjumper Tania Moore shattered the quiet community of Ashbourne. Tania, a popular and ambitious woman with a bright future, was driving home from work when her life was cruelly taken in a cold-blooded ambush by someone she had once trusted deeply - her ex-fiancé. For over a year leading up to her murder, Tania endured relentless abuse at the hands of her ex, including an orchestrated assault and robbery. Despite her courage in reporting the abuse and death threats on multiple occasions, systemic failures and overworked authorities allowed the danger to persist. As Domestic Abuse Awareness Month draws to a close, Tania’s story is a harrowing reminder of the dangers many face behind closed doors. While this month brings vital attention to the issue, the campaign against domestic abuse must continue year-round. 08 Dec 2022Harold Shipman | Dr Death | Part 1 | Background00:31:55
In the season 7 special, I tell the story of Dr Harold Shipman, dubbed by the media as "Dr Death". Shipman was arrested on September 7, 1998, after police raided his home. The body of Kathleen Grundy, one of Shipman's former patients, was exhumed and examined after her daughter deemed it suspicious that her mother's will excluded her children but left a large sum to Shipman. Kathleen's body was found to contain traces of diamorphine, which contradicted her death being the result of old age as stated on her death certificate written by, you guessed it, Dr Harold Shipman. In total, Shipman was convicted of murdering 15 people, but the frightening reality is that his victim count is thought to be more than 250. In the first episode of this two-part special, I discuss Shipman's early life and background, his journey to becoming a GP with his own practice and what is thought to be his first-ever murder. Next week, I'll discuss the murders, the trial and its aftermath.⁣ ⁣⁣For all things British Murders, please visit my website:⁣ https://www.britishmurders.com/⁣ Intro music:⁣ David John Brady - 'Throw Down the Gauntlet'⁣ https://linktr.ee/davidjohnbradymusic⁣ My recording equipment:⁣ Shure SM7B Vocal Microphone Cloud Microphone Cloudlifter CL1 Focusrite Scarlett Solo USB Audio Interface Rode PSA-1 Professional Studio Boom Arm Recorded and Edited in:⁣ Hindenberg PRO References:⁣ www.britishmurders.com/haroldshipmanpart1/ Learn more about your ad choices. 16 Feb 2023S08E07 | Damian Rzeszowski | The Murders of Marek Gartska, Izabela, Kinga & Kacper Rzeszowski and Marta & Julia de la Haye00:26:56
I tell the story of Damian Rzeszowski and his family in this episode. On August 14, 2011, Damian and his wife Izabela returned from a couple's trip to their native Poland. Later that day, the family planned on hosting a barbecue. After being berated by Izabela for leaving the kids alone in the house whilst she went to collect her friend, Damian snapped. He grabbed two kitchen knives and, within the space of 15 minutes, murdered Izabela, Marek Gartska, his father-in-law, Kinga and Kacper, his two children, and Marta and Julia de la Haye, Izabela's friend and her daughter. Damian then turned the knife on himself but survived his self-inflicted injuries. Judge Michael Birt handed Damian six concurrent 30-year sentences on October 29, 2012, after he was found guilty of manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility. Damian Rzeszowski took his own life at HMP Full Sutton on March 31, 2018. ⁣⁣For all things British Murders, please visit my website:⁣ https://www.britishmurders.com/⁣ Intro music:⁣ David John Brady - 'Throw Down the Gauntlet'⁣ https://linktr.ee/davidjohnbradymusic⁣ References:⁣ www.britishmurders.com/damianrzeszowski/ Learn more about your ad choices. 30 Jul 2023Interview #36 | Britain's Drug War: The Real Inside Story with Neil Woods01:07:56
I welcome Neil Woods to the show in this interview episode to discuss his career as a former UK police officer and undercover drugs operative. Neil worked undercover between 1993 and 2007, befriending and gaining the trust of some of Britain's most violent and unpredictable criminals. He's now an active member of the international drug policy reform movement. With the insight that can only come from having fought on its front lines, Neil saw the true futility of the War on Drugs - that it demonises those who need help and empowers the worst elements in society.    Neil is a board member of the Law Enforcement Action Partnership (LEAP) in the USA and the U.K. (LEAP UK).   LEAP is a growing international organisation that advocates an evidence-based drug policy and related criminal justice reforms. 20 Aug 2023Interview #38 | The True Story of 'Line of Duty' with Robin Jarossi00:37:32
I welcome journalist and writer Robin Jarossi back to the show in this interview episode to discuss his book 'The Real Ted Hastings: The True Story of the Copper at the Heart of Line of Duty'. 'Line of Duty' holds its status as today's defining TV crime drama. The conspiracy theme of the series chimes at a time when public institutions and representatives are distrusted. Ted Hastings, the show's head of anti-corruption, has emerged as the beating heart of the series. Robin's book reveals how the compelling drama reflects real crimes, events and figures, most notably that of Robert Mark and his battle against Met corruption. During his four years and eleven months as commissioner, Mark saw 478 men leave the force following or in anticipation of criminal/disciplinary proceedings. Departures in the previous decade had averaged about 16 a year. Mark's extraordinary career established the need for a dedicated team to investigate corruption that lives on today. 02 Jul 2023Interview #33 | The Lynette White Case: Author John Williams Reflects on His Career and the Story of 'The Cardiff Three'00:48:36
I welcome Welsh author John Williams to the show in this interview episode to discuss his career and the Lynette White murder case. In 1994, John released 'Bloody Valentine', a non-fiction book about the murder of a young woman called Lynette White in the Cardiff docklands (aka Tiger Bay) on Valentine's Day 1988. It's also the story of the miscarriage of justice after three black men, 'The Cardiff Three', were wrongly convicted of her murder. It's a brutally frank tale of racism and police corruption, terrible misogynist violence and the grim realities of sex work. It's a book that got so close to the bone that John was sued for libel by the police and received death threats from various minor characters. It's an unforgettable portrait of life in the underbelly of Thatcher's Britain. John also writes crime fiction under the name "John Lincoln", with his latest effort, 'Grey in the Dark', released on February 23, 2023. 25 Jun 2023Interview #32 | The Untold Story: Matt Johnson and John Murray Discuss 'No Ordinary Day' and the Murder of WPC Yvonne Fletcher00:47:24
I welcome former police officers Matt Johnson and John Murray to the show in this interview episode to discuss their new book 'No Ordinary Day'. On April 17, 1984, as demonstrators gathered outside the Libyan embassy in London, two gunmen waited inside. At 10.18 am, automatic gunfire rained down on the protestors, and WPC Yvonne Fletcher fell, mortally wounded. As his friend lay dying, PC John Murray made her a promise that he would not rest until those responsible had been brought to justice. Thirty-seven years would pass before he was able to fulfil that undertaking. While researching this moving account of one man’s dogged pursuit of justice for a murdered colleague, Matt Johnson uncovered secret-service deals and government duplicity, all part of a plan to force an end to the National Union of Mineworkers strike. He discovered the real reason Yvonne’s killers were allowed to go free and how events that day led to thirty years of growing political control of policing, resulting in the disarray increasingly evident today. The book pulls seemingly unconnected threads into a coherent and shocking whole. It provides startling insights into how decisions taken by our politicians and the actions of our intelligence agencies, supposedly in our best interests, may be anything but. 'No Ordinary Day' was released on June 8, 2023, and is available to purchase here: No Ordinary Day | Ad Lib Publishers ***This interview was recorded on June 5, 2023. Jason fled the UK and headed for Grenada before settling briefly in Trinidad. He was eventually arrested five months later after CCTV images of him from the day of the murder were released. Once extradited back to the UK, Jason was tried at Luton Crown Court and found guilty of Jordan's murder. 02 Aug 2023S10E05 | The Manslaughter of Janet Commins | Villain: Stephen Hough00:33:52
In this episode, I discuss the tragic story of Janet Commins, a 15-year-old schoolgirl who was sexually assaulted and killed in 1976. Janet had planned to meet her friends at the local swimming baths on January 7, but her mum, Eileen, did not permit her to go as she looked pale and unwell. Sneaking out and leaving a note behind, Janet was never seen alive by her parents again. This case features a massive miscarriage of justice, with the first murder trial occurring in June 1976. 18-year-old Noel Jones was accused of murdering Janet and, bizarrely, admitted manslaughter even though he was innocent and was handed a 12-year prison sentence, serving six. Forty years later, 57-year-old Stephen Hough was arrested on an unrelated matter and had his DNA taken. It matched DNA found on samples taken from Janet's body. Like Noel, Hough was found guilty of manslaughter in July 2017 and handed a 12-year sentence. 29 Dec 2022The Hijacking of EgyptAir Flight 648 | Feat. Grace Cordell from REDRUM and HUMANS00:28:55
In this off-season episode, I'm joined by Grace Cordell of REDRUM and HUMANS, who will tell me (and you) the story of the hijacking of EgyptAir Flight 648. On November 23, 1985, a Boeing 737-200 airliner was hijacked on its Athens-to-Cairo route by three terrorists - Salem Chakore, Omar Rezaq and Nar Al-Din Bou Said. The plane was forced to land at Luqa Airport in Malta due to serious pressurization problems and dangerously low fuel levels. A subsequent raid on the aircraft by Egyptian troops killed 56 of the 86 passengers, 2 of the 3 hijackers and 2 of the 6 crew members. Until 9/11, the hijacking of EgyptAir Flight 648 was considered the most infamous in aviation history. 11 Jan 2024S12E02 | The Murder of Paul Norfolk (Haverhill, Suffolk, 2011)00:28:08
In this episode, I tell the story of Paul Norfolk, a 77-year-old man killed in Haverhill, Suffolk, in December 2011. Paul lived in his semi-detached home with his wife, Esme, and her carer, 49-year-old Thailand native Bunthawee Rimmer, until Esme was moved to a residential home when her health drastically deteriorated after suffering a stroke. Rimmer claimed she then began a sexual relationship with Paul, which ultimately led to him signing over his house and entire estate, worth around £340,000, to her in late 2011. In the early hours of December 30, Rimmer murdered Paul by striking him in the head twelve times with a claw hammer. She then attempted to end her own life but was arrested and taken to a hospital in Cambridge to be treated for her injuries. A jury at Ipswich Crown Court found her guilty of murder by way of a majority verdict in July 2012, and she was handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 11 years. 16 Oct 2024The Strangeways Prison Riot (Manchester, Greater Manchester, 1990) | Feat. Megan and Neil from Mortal Musings00:39:04
In April 1990, one of the most notorious and violent prison uprisings in British history erupted at Strangeways Prison in Manchester. What began as a protest quickly spiralled into a full-blown riot, as prisoners seized control of the facility, venting their anger over brutal conditions and overcrowding. For 25 days, the world watched in shock as inmates set fires, battled guards, and took to the roof in defiance. The uprising left one inmate and prison officer dead, hundreds injured, and the prison in ruins, forcing a nationwide re-examination of the UK prison system. **This episode features Megan and Neil from Mortal Musings telling me (and you) the story of the riot. 23 Oct 2024S15E05 | Wesley Neailey (Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear, 1998)00:34:01
In 1998, the brutal murder of 11-year-old Wesley Neailey sent shockwaves through Newcastle and the entire nation. Wesley was a friendly and happy boy who trusted people easily, but that trust was cruelly exploited when he was lured away by someone he'd recently come into contact with. The person responsible for his death preyed on Wesley’s innocence, cutting his young life short in a horrifying act of violence. The murder not only devastated his family, but also exposed deeply concerning loopholes in the British legal system. 16 Nov 2023S11E08 | The Murder of Louise Sellars (Appley Bridge, Greater Manchester, 1995)00:33:10
In this episode, I tell the story of Louise Sellars, a 15-year-old girl killed in Appley Bridge, Greater Manchester, on August 13, 1995. That Sunday evening, Louise left her home to meet her friend Kelly Morrisey and spent a few hours with her before the two parted ways. The last time Louise was seen was at around 9:30 pm. Her parents called the police after Louise failed to return home without letting them know where she was. A massive search was conducted in the hopes of finding her alive, but sadly, her body was found the following morning by a dog walker. It would take five years before Louise's killer was brought to justice, thanks to advances in DNA technology. Ultimately, it was a discarded cigarette butt that led to the arrest and subsequent conviction of Darren Ashurst, who was 21 years old when he killed Louise. A jury at Manchester Crown Court found Ashurst guilty of murder on November 1, 2000, with Mrs Justice Rafferty handing him a life sentence. He served 20 years in total and was released from prison in 2020. The couple's relationship was approaching its end, and Felix refused to allow the separation to happen. 15 Dec 2022Harold Shipman | Dr Death | Part 2 | The Murders00:51:07
In the first episode of this two-part special, I discussed Shipman's early life and background, his journey to becoming a GP with his own practice and what is thought to be his first-ever murder. ⁣ This week, I'll discuss the murders he was convicted of, the trial and its aftermath. ⁣⁣For all things British Murders, please visit my website:⁣ https://www.britishmurders.com/⁣ Intro music:⁣ David John Brady - 'Throw Down the Gauntlet'⁣ https://linktr.ee/davidjohnbradymusic⁣ My recording equipment:⁣ Shure SM7B Vocal Microphone Cloud Microphone Cloudlifter CL1 Focusrite Scarlett Solo USB Audio Interface Rode PSA-1 Professional Studio Boom Arm Recorded and Edited in:⁣ Hindenberg PRO References:⁣ www.britishmurders.com/haroldshipmanpart2/ Learn more about your ad choices. 09 Aug 2023S10E06 | The Murder of Alan Livesey | Villain: Margaret Livesey?00:29:36
In this episode, I discuss the story of Alan Livesey, a 14-year-old schoolboy and Army Cadet who was murdered in bizarre circumstances in 1979. On February 22, Alan was left home alone when his dad, Bob, left for his night shift, and his mum, Margaret, headed to the pub with her friend and secret lover. A few hours later, Alan was brutally murdered in his home, and his body was only discovered after Margaret sent her friend Eileen's son, Leslie, to her house to check on him. Margaret claimed to have headed straight for Eileen's house after returning from the pub, but she is suspected of having killed her son first and signed a confession stating as much before she quickly withdrew it. Add to that several witness testimonies indicating there was another male in the house with Alan whilst his mum was at the pub, which takes the complexity of this mystery to another level. Still, Margaret was found guilty of murdering Alan and handed a life sentence on July 26. She served ten years (incorrectly stated as being thirteen in the episode) before being released in 1989 and subsequently passed away in February 2001 after succumbing to throat cancer. The case aired on an episode of Rough Justice in October 1983, and many, including Margaret's other son, Derek, believe she is innocent. Sadly, it looks like the truth will now never be known. In the first episode of British Murders Season 7, I tell the story of Anthony Hardy. Between January and December 2002, Anthony Hardy murdered Sally White, Elizabeth Valad and Bridgette Maclennan in Camden Town, London. He initially got away with the murder of Sally White in January 2002 due to an incorrect cause of death confirmed by disgraced pathologist Dr Freddy Patel. Between April and November 2002, Hardy spent time in psychiatric units at several hospitals, and within six weeks of being released, he murdered Elizabeth Valad and Bridgette Maclennan. Hardy was arrested in January 2003 and received a life sentence that November. Mr Justice Keith upgraded his sentence to a whole life tariff in May 2010.
