Next, Dr. Correa talks with Dr. Glenn Seliger, acting chief medical officer and director of Traumatic Brain Injury Services at Helen Hayes Hospital in West Haverstraw, New York, and assistant professor of clinical neurology at Columbia University, as well as Ms. Beth Russo, an occupational therapist who specializes in Parkinson’s disease. In this special episode, Dr. Daniel Correa thanks Dr. Audrey Nath for her time with the Brain & Life podcast by sharing bonus content from a previous interview with palliative care physician Dr. BJ Miller. Dr. Miller talks about phantom limb pain that can accompany a limb amputation and therapies—such as mirror box therapy—that helped him with his own recovery after losing both legs below the knees and half an arm after an electrocution accident. Next, Dr. Correa sits down with Dr. Vilayanur Subramanian (V.S.) Ramachandran, director of the Center for Brain and Cognition and distinguished professor with the Psychology Department and Neurosciences Program at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Ramachandran explains phantom limb pain and how his team developed mirror box therapy to treat it.

Recipes

Dr. Peters’ Favorite Turkey Risotto

Dr. Correa’s Favorite Mojo Verde

Dan Jacobs’ Smashed Cucumber Salad

Ingredients

• 6-8 persian cucmbers or 2 large seedless cucumbers

• 1/4C mung bean sprouts

• 1/4C sliced daikon radish

• 1/4C scallions sliced as thin and long as you can

• 1 bunch cilantro roughly picked (you can leave some stem on. The stems are full of

flavor.

• 1/4C dill

• 1/4C roasted and salted peanuts chopped up in a food processor

• 2T chili crunch (by whatever producer. Fly by Jing’s is a nice one.)

• 4T black vinegar

• 1t salt

• 2t sugar

• 1/4C sesame oil

 

Process

1. Put cucumbers in a gallon ziplock bag. Do not seal them. If using Persian

cucumbers, you will need to chop them in. Thirds and then halve lengthwise.

2. Using a rolling pin or mallet, beat the cucumbers up a bit. The irregular crags and

breaks will hold the vinaigrette perfectly.

3. Mix the chili crunch, black vinegar, sesame oil, salt, and sugar.

4. Mix all ingredients.

Wesley shares his story of becoming paralyzed after a spinal cord injury and how he changed his perspective on life as a parent and for other people with disabilities. Next, Dr. Correa speaks with Dr. Barth Green, neurosurgeon and specialist in the surgical management of complex spine and spinal cord injuries and disorders at the University of Miami Health System, and co-founder of The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. Dr. Green discusses the different types of spinal cord injuries, what happens to the muscles after injury, and the future of improving recovery and rehab for people with this condition.

Lisa discusses her book, Overcome the BS of MS: A 3-step Plan for Women Living with Multiple Sclerosis, as well as her upcoming project, Wear Your Red Lipstick. Dr. Correa is then joined by Dan and Jennifer Digmann, a married couple who both live with MS. The Digmanns discuss how they met, how they rely on each other’s strengths to care for one another, and share tips on feeling empowered in sharing their MS journey.

This week the Brain & Life podcast collaborates with CurePSP, an organization that works to raise awareness, build community, and find a cure for neurodegenerative conditions like progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). Dr. Daniel Correa interviews Audrey Stafford, care partner for her husband Jeff Golub who passed away from complications of the condition PSP. Audrey shares her story as a partner navigating a PSP diagnosis and how it impacted her family. Then Dr. Correa welcomes back to the podcast Dr. Alexander Pantelyat, Director of Atypical Parkinsonism Center at Johns Hopkins Medicine. Also joining the discussion is Salin Geevarghese, son and care partner for his mother who lives with corticobasal degeneration (CBD). Dr. Pantelyat explains what PSP and CBD are and how these neurodegenerative conditions are related, and Salin offers his perspective as a family member of a loved one who is diagnosed with conditions like these and the role of CurePSP for his and other families.

Daniel Correa and Audrey Nath speak with neurologist Dr. Amy Hessler about neurologic challenges that women may face throughout their lives. This week Dr. Daniel Correa speaks with writer John Hendrickson who shares his story of living with childhood onset fluency disorder—also known as stuttering. John discusses the challenges he faced with the neurologic disorder, his experience with various speech therapies, and how he learned to accept his identity as someone who stutters. Next Dr. Correa sits down with Dr. Scott Yaruss, professor of communicative sciences and disorders at Michigan State University and president of Stuttering Therapy Resources. Dr. Yaruss explains what stuttering is and how symptoms may vary if the condition is child or adult onset. Dr. Yaruss also shares tools to help people manage stuttering; however, he emphasizes the importance of teaching society to understand that all speech is valuable.

Peter shares how his diagnosis has led him to start his own foundation in partnership with Johns Hopkins University and become passionate about IBM research. He discusses how music helps him manage his condition as he continues to experience mobility changes. Dr. Nath is then joined by Dr. Steven Greenberg, neuromuscular neurologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and professor at Harvard Medical School. This week Dr. Nath is joined by Beth Usher and her parents, Brian and Kathy, to talk about her childhood diagnosis of Rasmussen’s encephalitis and the resulting hemispherectomy, a surgery to remove half her brain, that has earned her a spot in medical history. Beth shares her memories from that time and how she has used humor and laughter to remain positive throughout her journey, including a friendship with Mister Rogers. Her parents share what it was like to witness the effects of Rasmussen’s encephalitis on their young daughter and to make such a dramatic treatment decision on Beth’s behalf. Dr. Nath is then joined by Dr. James Riviello, associate section head for epilepsy, neurophysiology, and neurocritical care at Texas Children’s Hospital. Dr. Riviello describes his experience treating Rasmussen’s encephalitis and explains how a hemispherectomy can successfully treat the condition.
