Episode 72 of the USA Wrestling Bonus Points podcast features 2017 NCAA champion Darian Cruz of Lehigh University. Cruz won the 125-pound title at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships held in St. Louis, Mo., March 16-18. Throuhgout his three-day journey in St. Louis, Cruz defeated Dylan Peters of Northern Iowa, Shakur Laney of Ohio, Sean Fausz of North Carolina State, Thomas Gilman of Iowa and Ethan Lizak of Minnesota to become the 22nd individual to win a NCAA title for Lehigh. Cruz downed the top seed Gilman 4-2 in the semifinals courtesy of a takedown in sudden victory. He secured a 6-3 win over Lizak in the championship match. At the conclusion of his junior campaign for the Mountain Hawks, Cruz owns two NCAA All-American honors and two EIWA conference championships. He finished with a 31-2 record this season. Leathers made her first Senior-level U.S. World Team by winning the U.S. World Team Trials held in Las Vegas, Nev. in April. She will be the 55 kg representative for the U.S. at the World Championships being held in Paris, France, this August. One week after making the World Team, Leathers brought back gold from the Pan American Championships held in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil. She has been a member of two Junior World Teams and one Cadet World Team. In 2015, Leathers won a bronze medal at the Junior World Championships. This season, Leathers has won international gold medals at the Bill Farrell International and Dave Schultz Memorial International. She is also a University Nationals champion and past WCWA Women's College Nationals champion. Brenneman wrestled collegiatly at Lock Haven University where he finished in the round of 12 at the 2004 NCAA Championships. He was named to the NWCA All-Academic Team in 2004. Following his wrestling career at Lock Haven, Brenneman taught high school Spanish for three years, where he garned his nickname The Spaniard, before winning the reality television show Pros vs. Joes in 2006. Soon thereafter, he elected to turn to a career in mma. Brenneman was ranked as high as No. 7 in the UFC welterweight division. He has battled current top contenders Johny Hendricks and Anthony "Rumble" Johnson inside the Octagon. Currently, Brenneman works as a professional speaker and author. He scored silver medals at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia, and the 2001 World Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria. He qualified for three additional U.S. World Team's throughout his Senior-level career. As a Division I wrestler for the University of Minnesota, Paulson earned NCAA All-America status as a senior in 1998 by finishing in seventh place nationally at 118 pounds. Paulson now coaches alongside fellow Minnesota great Jared Lawrence at the PINnacle Wrestling School in Shoreview, Minnesota. He was a member of the 2008 Olympic coaching staff in Beijing, China. Episode 85 of the USA Wrestling Bonus Points podcast features 2017 Junior World champion Daton Fix. Fix topped the 55 kg/121 lbs. men's freestyle charts at the Junior World Championships held in Tampere, Finland, in August. He won five matches on his way to gold, scoring five technical falls and outscoring his opponents by a combined 53-1 tally. The win in Finland added to an already outstanding resume for Fix that includes a Junior World bronze medal, a Cadet World Bronze medal, a Youth Olympic Games silver medal and two Cadet Pan American titles. He has competed in four World Championship events for the U.S., two in the Cadet division and two in the Junior division. Fix was a four-time Oklahoma high school state champion for Charles Page High School, ending his career with a perfect 168-0 record. He was awarded the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2017. The talented youngster will begin his collegiate career this year for the tradition-rich Oklahoma State program. He expects to compete at 125 pounds for the Cowboys. Dennis captured gold at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Iowa City, Iowa on April 10. In the best-of-three championships series Dennis defeated two-time U.S. World Team member and former college teammate Tony Ramos in two matches by scores of 2-1 and 10-0. After taking multiple years away from the sport, Dennis returned in 2015 and made an immediate impact. In 2015 he placed fourth at the U.S. Open, second at the U.S. World Team Trials and first at the Grand Prix of Spain while competing at 61 kg. Since dropping down to 57 kg for the Olympic year, Dennis placed third at the Bill Farrell International and won the U.S. Open prior to his title run at the Olympic Trials. Dennis was a two-time NCAA All-American for the University of Iowa. He finished as the NCAA runner-up in 2010 at 133 pounds. Bey blitzed the 74 kg/163 lbs. field with one spectacular throw after another to claim America’s first Greco-Roman gold medal at the Junior Worlds since Garrett Lowney did so in 1999. He rattled off a tournament high 61 total points throughout his five matches in Tampere, Finland. He followed up his Junior World title by earning a berth on the U.S. U23 World Team that will comepte in Bydgoszcz, Poland, Nov. 21-26. Bey has been on quite a run this season, picking up Senior-level gold medals at the Bill Farrell International and Dave Schultz Memorial International, on top of a bronze medal at the Grand Prix of Zagreb. He also secured gold at the Austria Open in the Junior division. Domestically, he finished as runner-up at the U.S. World Team Trials and was the U.S. Senior Nationals champion. He was a six-time All-American at the USA Wrestling Cadet and Junior Nationals held in Fargo, N.D., qualifying for the finals on five occasions, and winning the Junior Greco-Roman crown in 2015. Bey was an Illinois high school state champion for powerhouse program Oak Park-River Forest prior to making the move out the to the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. to focus strictly on Greco-Roman. Episode 48 of Bonus Points features former wrestler and UFC Hall of Famer Frank Trigg. Trigg is a wrestling and mixed martial arts veteteran on top of several other career endeavors that include acting, stunt work and color commentary. He currently covers mma in several journalistic capacities and is now working in Hawaii as a stunt man for television drama Hawaii Five-O. Trigg grew up wrestling with mild success in Upstate New York. He posted college stints at Oklahoma State and Phoenix College before finishing his career as a NCAA qualifier for Oklahoma. He was highly competitive on the Senior level through 2000 before transitioning to mma full-time. On the mma scene, Trigg held championship titles for several different promotions. He fought in the famed Pride Fighting Championships and the UFC where he fought for the Welterweight crown twice against all-time great Matt Hughes. Other top-named opponents he battled in the cage were Georges St. Pierre, Carlos Condit, Robbie Lawler, Josh Koshcheck and Matt Serra. Episode 30 of Bonus Points features one of the best men's freestyle wrestlers in USA Wrestling history, Olympic and World champion Kenny Monday. In total, Monday won four Olympic and World medals. He won a gold medal at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea and a silver medal at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain. Monday also won gold at the 1989 World Championships and earned silver at the 1991 World Championships. Monday was a member of three U.S. Olympic teams (1988, 1992 and 1996). After moving to the U.S. from Bulgaria at age four, Dlagnev has paved a remarkable road on the wrestling mat. He has competed at four senior-level World Championships on top of the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England. Moreover, he wrestled for a medal in all five of his World and Olympic competitions, earning bronze in 2009 and 2014. Last year, Dlagnev won the U.S. World Team Trials but was forced to remove himself from the World Championships due to injury. He still battles the very same injury to this day. At the University level, Dlagnev was a four-time NCAA Division II All-American and two-time NCAA champion at Nebraska-Kearney. He helped lead the program to its first NCAA team championship in 2008. The same year he won a gold medal at the World University Championships in freestyle. The four-time NCAA champion and 2011 Junior World silver medalist made his mark on the international wrestling world with an electrifying gold-medal performance at the 2016 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Stieber stared down an incredibly challenging draw at Worlds, with all four of his opponents ranked highly in the United World Wrestling men’s freestyle rankings at 61 kg/134 lbs. The U.S. gunslinger opened his World title run with a quick 10-0 technical fall over 2015 World bronze medalist Vasyl Shuptar of Ukraine. In the quarterfinals, he topped eventual bronze medalist Akhmed Chakaev of Russia, 13-11, scoring the deciding takedown with five seconds left in the match. Moments later, Stieber secured the match-clinching takedown on Asian silver medalist Behnam Ehsanpoor of Iran with one second remaining in the bout to pull out a 9-8 victory and qualify for the finals. Standing across Stieber in the gold-medal match was 2015 European Games silver medalist Beka Lomtadze of Georgia. Leading 1-0 entering the second frame, Stieber rode his high-powered offense to a comfortable 8-4 decision and his first World championship. Stieber won his fourth NCAA title and the Hodge Trophy for the Ohio State Buckeyes in 2015, becoming just the fourth wrestler in NCAA history to accomplish this feat. He is now the first four-time NCAA champion to win a World Championships. Molinaro navigated a gauntlet of talented contenders to capture the Olympic Trials gold in Iowa City, Iowa on April 9. He defeated two-time NCAA champion Kellen Russell, four-time U.S. World Team member Brent Metcalf, four-time NCAA champion Logan Stieber and two-time Junior World medalist Aaron Pico on his road to gold. In the best-of-three championships series Molinaro defeated Pico two matches to one. Molinaro now turns his attention to qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Games by placing in the top three at the first World Olympic Games qualifying tournament in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia on April 24. If necessary, the final World Olympic Games qualifying tournament will be held in Istanbul, Turkey two weeks later with the top two wrestlers in each weight class qualifying for the Rio Olympics. The past two seasons Molinaro has won three gold medals at international competitions. In 2015 he claimed gold at the Guelph Open and Grand Prix of Spain. This February he ran the table at the Pan American Championships to take top prize. Molinaro was four-time NCAA All-American for Penn State University. He won the NCAA championships in 2011 and was NCAA runner-up in 2011. Vandiver has a proven record of success as an athlete on the high school and international levels, as well as extensive experience coaching age-group wrestlers. One of her key responsibilities for USA Wrestling has been working with the nation’s top Cadet and Junior level women wrestlers, including coaching U.S. age group World Teams. In her role as a coach for the resident-athletes at the U.S. Olympic Training Center, Vandiver has also helped numerous U.S. Senior women wrestlers win World and Olympic medals for the United States. She has been a member of the women’s coaching staff at the last two Olympic Games. Competing under her maiden name Erin Tomeo, she was a member of the 2001 and 2006 U.S. World Teams. She won the 2008 U.S. Open and was a four-time U.S. Open runner-up. Erin wrestled at Lock Haven University as a member of the varsity men’s team for the 2001-2002 season. Competing for Grove City High School, she was the first girl in Pennsylvania wrestling history to place at Districts and win a match at the Regional high school boys wrestling tournament. She was also active with USA Wrestling in its age-group women’s programs, and won Cadet World bronze medals in 1998 and 1999. Nelson topped the 63 kg/139 lbs. weight class in women's freestyle at the 2017 Junior World Championships in Tampere, Finland. Episode 60 of the USA Wrestling Bonus Points podcast features four-time NCAA All-American, U.S. World Team member and Indiana associate head coach Nick Simmons. Dubbed the East Lansing Strangler for his punishing wrestling style, Simmons was a staple on the U.S. men's freestyle scene from 2004 until he announced his retirement in 2015. Simmons finished in fifth place at the 2011 Senior World Championships held in Istanbul, Turkey. He was a runner-up at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. Wrestling collegiately for Michigan State, Simmons earned four NCAA All-American honors with finishes of third, fourth, fourth and seventh at the NCAA Championships. He was a three-time Big Ten Champion for the Spartans, racking up 138 collegiate wins with 46 coming by fall. Simmons was one of the top high school wrestlers in U.S. history with 211 overall wins, only three of which not coming by pin or technical fall. He was a four-time Michigan state champion and three time Junior National champion.
