02 Mar 2022Jarrod Walker (Billy Strings) Interview01:05:36

My guest this week is Jarrod Walker, best known to most of you as the mandolin player in Billy Strings' band.

We chat about all sorts of stuff, including what Chris Thile taught him about learning fiddle tunes, how he almost ended up selling instruments for a living rather than playing them, the pros and cons of plugging in onstage and going from landscaping one day during the pandemic to playing a live streamed gig at Red Rocks the next.

To connect with Jarrod and find out where you can catch a show, check out the links below

04 Mar 2022First Birthday Special - Whiskey Before Breakfast Jam in D00:06:56

Hi everyone.

Today marks a year from me uploading the very first episode of Bluegrass Jam Along, so I thought I'd celebrate with something a little different!

Today we're jamming along to the very first tune I added to the podcast - Whiskey Before Breakfast, in D.

Rather than the standard tracks though, I thought it would be fun to try something a bit more free flowing, where we're not just playing the same thing over and over. So, here goes!

There's a short intro, with me just noodling a little over D and G to set the mood and tempo, than it's 5 times through:

  1. Me playing lead
  2. You playing lead
  3. Me playing lead
  4. You playing lead
  5. Me playing lead

That's it. Hopefully you'll enjoy it and it'll feel a little more experimental than the usual episode! Have fun with it. Back to the usual format next week!

If you want a chord chart (or just want to find out more or get in touch),  head to bluegrassjamalong.com

08 Mar 2022Bob Minner Interview (Norman Blake tribute record)01:13:00

My guest this week is Bob Minner. Bob has been the acoustic guitarist for country icon Tim McGraw for almost 30 years now, and he's also a fantastic bluegrass picker.

His latest project, 'From Sulphur Springs To Rising Fawn : The Songs of Norman Blake' is a wonderful tribute to the music of Norman and Nancy Blake, featuring duets with people from the worlds of country and bluegrass, including Tim Stafford, Ron Block, Vince Gill, Chris Eldridge and Dale Ann Bradley.

We chat about Bob's love for Norman's music, how he came to meet his hero, the part George Gruhn played in that (as well as his incredible generosity when it came to his collection of vintage guitars), plus much, much more.

I could easily have chatted to Bob for another hour! It was such a cool conversation to be part of - I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

06 Apr 2022Old Home Place (G 85 bpm)00:07:24

I've got something new for you on the podcast this week.  I know a lot of you, alongside working on fiddle tunes, are also working on breaks for vocal songs. So I'm adding some songs to the podcast too, starting with Old Home Place.

I know these songs often get played in different keys depending on who sings them, so I'm giving you a set of four different tracks in different keys. This track is in G at 85 bpm - check out the other three too.

I'm not trying to replicate a particular version, so there aren't any intros, turnarounds or tags, just a verse, followed by a chorus, repeated till we've done it all four times though.

Hope you find these useful! If you want a chord chart (or just want to find out more or get in touch),  just head to bluegrassjamalong.com

Backing track starts at 1:59 (there'll be less preamble on the songs in future - just wanted to introduce them properly first time!)

Happy picking!

03 May 2022Tony Trischka interview00:53:04

My guest this week is Tony Trischka, who the New York Times called 'the father of modern bluegrass'.

Tony has been at the forefront of the folk and bluegrass worlds since the 1960s. Our conversation focusses on his 2021 album Shall We Hope, described on Tony's website as "a dramatized listening experience. It invites its audience into the lives of characters from America’s past as they grapple with the hard realities of war and death, and the meaning of freedom". We also chat about his teaching, both online with ArtistWorks' and over several decades in person, and via books, CDs, DVDs and video.

You can find out more at Tony's website and Tony's ArtistWorks banjo course

You can watch the documentary Give Me the Banjo on iTunes and Amazon Prime Video

Here's the ArtistWorks podcast with Tony I mentioned at the start of the episode.

Happy picking!

11 May 2022Jake Eddy returns00:32:29

My guest (again) this week is Jake Eddy.

Jake was my first ever guest on Bluegrass Jam Along. If you want to check out that episode it's here

Jake came back to chat to me about his latest project, 'Nor' Easter', a new collaboration with mandolin legend Andy Statman. Jake explains how the project came about (very quickly!), what the process was and talks about some of the amazing instruments used in the sessions.

As always it was great chatting to Jake - hope you enjoy this as much as I did.

If you want to find out more about Jake, or get lessons from him, you can check out his Instagram and Facebook. You can also find tour dates on Becky Buller's website. You can pre-order Nor' Easter here

03 Jun 2022Food for Thought #8 - 'Yes, but is it bluegrass?'00:05:31

Hi.

We haven't had a Food For Thought episode for a while, but I've had something in my head all week based on a few Facebook posts I saw. The general theme was whether something can be called bluegrass if it has a  non-traditionally bluegrass instrument in it (e.g. pedal steel or accordion).

In the episode I play a clip of my interview with Tristan Scroggins where he discusses genre and how he sees it. Here's the full Tristan Scroggins interview if you want to hear it all (or have a listen again - which I'd thoroughly recommend - I did just that this week!).

Have a listen, then head over to Bluegrass Jamalong's Instagram or Facebook and tell us what you think!

09 Jun 2022Tony Rice Birthday Tribute (Chris Eldridge, Mike Marshall, Happy Traum & Marcel Ardans)00:20:09

Yesterday was June 8th 2022 and would have been Tony Rice's birthday.  As a tribute to Tony I've put together a compilation of some of the conversations I've had  for this podcast where the guests mentioned Tony.

I wanted to wait till today to release it as yesterday, Tony's actual birthday, I was speaking to Happy Traum of Homespun, who was a good friend of Tony's and worked closely with him. I wanted to make sure we included something from Happy.

So here, a day late but hopefully worth the wait, is Bluegrass Jam Along's birthday tribute to Tony Rice.

If you want to hear the full interviews these came from, here they are:

Chris Eldridge interview

Mike Marshall interview

Marcel Ardans interview

Happy picking (and happy birthday Tony!)

21 Jun 2022Emma John (Wayfaring Stranger book) Interview00:55:21

We chat about what made a British journalist and cricket fan want to travel to North Carolina and write a book about bluegrass, the key lesson Emma learned from the Kruger Brothers  and so much more. I loved this one - it feels as much a conversation about life and belonging as it does a conversation about bluegrass.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

First up is Billy Strings, followed by Trey Hensley, Molly Tuttle and Tony Rice.

15 Jul 2022Steve Nall (Nully) from Collings guitars01:05:23

My guest this week is Steve Nall, better known as Nully, head of production at Collings guitars.

I didn't realise till we sat down to chat that it was exactly five years to the day since Bill Collings passed. We talked about Bill, his approach to guitar making (and life in general), as well as how the business has developed, with and without him and how Nully got into guitar building in the first place.

We also chat about working with great players like Julian Lage and Bob Minner to develop instruments and what makes a Collings different from other guitars.

It was a fascinating conversation - I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

For more info on their guitars and mandolins, check out the Collings website.

22 Jul 2022Food for Thought #9 - Letting go of Perfect00:05:08

Hi everyone.

This is another Food For Thought episode and it centres around the idea of perfection.  Chris Eldridge said something recently that made me think about letting go of the idea of playing perfectly - I had an experience at a jam this week that really made me understand what he meant.

Have a listen and feel free to head over to Bluegrass Jamalong's Instagram or Facebook and tell us what you think!

If you haven't read the Brainjo book I mentioned in this episode, I'd really recommend it. Here's the interview I did with Josh Turknett, who wrote it, to give you a sense of what it's about.

Happy picking.

25 Jul 2022Mini Jam #4 - 3 tunes at 75bpm00:25:31

This week we've got something I haven't done in a while - a mini jam episode. That means we're playing 3 tunes back to back instead of focussing on just one. The idea is it feels a bit more like playing at a jam session. I know some of you use these tracks to work up to attending a jam so hopefully this will help with that!

I've gone for the 3 most popular tunes from the first year and a bit of the podcast. They are:

  1. Cherokee Shuffle in A (starts at 1:30)
  2. Whiskey Before Breakfast in D (starts at 9:32)
  3. Turkey in the Straw in G (starts at 16:49)

We're doing all three at 75bpm and each tune follows our regular 'jam along' format. That means I play backup and you play lead, then we swap, then we repeat the whole thing another 3 times. The whole jam lasts around 25 minutes.

If you want chord charts for these tunes,  head to bluegrassjamalong.com, where you'll also find details of how to get in touch. I'd love to hear any feedback on these mini jams so do let me know what you think.

Thanks,
Matt

27 Jul 2022Cameron Knowler interview01:09:31

My guest this week is Cameron Knowler.

Cameron is a multi-instrumentalist who specialises in bluegrass, old time and jazz. I was first introduced to Cameron by Bob Minner, who I interviewed back in March 2022 (episode #177).

Cameron also writes regularly for Acoustic Guitar magazine and has written a fascinating book called 'Guitars Have Feelings Too - A Method for Rural Guitarists', which looks in depth at the relationship between old-time and bluegrass guitar and how both styles have developed progressively (as well as what we can learn as guitarists by looking back towards the source of many of the fiddle tunes we play).

The ideas in the book, and how they relate to playing acoustic music, form the main part of the interview. I found this one fascinating and hope you do too!

You'll find more info at Cameron's website as well as his YouTube channel and Instagram account.

03 Aug 2022Scott Nygaard (Peghead Nation) interview01:03:24

My guest on the podcast this week is guitarist and Peghead Nation founder Scott Nygaard.

We chat about playing with Chris Thile and Tim O'Brien, including how Scott got the gig with Tim after a chance meeting. We also talk about how Peghead Nation was founded, the IBMA Distinguished Achievement Award they're receiving next month and how the site has developed over the years.

We also cover various other topics, including improvising, Scott's musical influences, the importance of going back to the sources of fiddle tunes and Scott's forthcoming record, which was heavily influenced by recovering from a serious bike accident last year.

I really enjoyed our chat and hope you do too.

You can find out more at Scott's website and see the full range of courses and sign up (which I highly recommend) at Pehgead Nation

10 Aug 2022Chris Pandolfi (Infamous Stringdusters) interview01:29:24

My guest this week is Chris Pandolfi, banjo player with The Infamous Stringdusters and also the host of my favourite podcast, Inside the Musician's Brain.

We chat about the podcast and the lessons Chris  learned from it, as well as how the lessons we learn through music can be applied to life (and vice versa). There's so much in here, from talking about music as a journey and how the players who inspire us are on that same journey as us, to learning to be present and in the moment and how to notice and let go of tension when we play.

It was an really inspiring conversation and I hope you love it as much as I did.

Here's Chris's podcast - Inside the Musician's Brain

01 Sep 2022Food for Thought - The Art of Reaction00:05:00

Hi everyone.

I've had a couple of weeks off the podcast to have a holiday, but I've been mulling over something Dan Tyminski said in the interview I did with him a couple of weeks ago and wanted to share it.

It's about the idea of reacting in music, rather than just playing. Dan talked about how Tony Rice did that and also how he does, and it got me thinking. The idea of music as a conversation, one that relies on listening as much as speaking, is something I've always been interested in.

Have a listen and see what you think.

Here's the interview with Dan Tyminski, in case you missed it.

Happy picking!

07 Sep 2022Paul Kowert (Hawktail/Punch Brothers) interview01:05:07

My guest this week is Paul Kowert, bassist with Punch Brothers and Hawktail.

Paul joins me to chat about Hawktail's wonderful new record 'Place of Growth', how the band came together, why they decided to record an album designed to be listened to in one sitting and some of the music and musicians that had a profound effect on him, including Edgar Meyer, Bela Fleck, Väsen and his Punch Brothers bandmate Chris Thile.

You can find out more about Hawktail and the new record at the Padiddle Records website and also get updates via Hawktail's Instagram and Paul's own Instagram

There's also a really cool series of Padiddle Spotlight videos, where all four members of Hawktail discuss a track off the new record each. They're well worth a watch.

I love this record and I loved having the chance to chat to Paul about it. Hope you enjoy our conversation too!

Happy picking.

26 Sep 2022Kristina R Gaddy - "Well of Souls: Uncovering the Banjo's Hidden History"01:06:32

My guest this week is Kristina R. Gaddy, who joins us to discuss her fascinating new book “Well of Souls: Uncovering the Banjo's Hidden History”.

We chat about how she came to write the book and some of the key discoveries she made along the way, in particular the banjo’s unknown history as an instrument of ritual and rebellion.

Kristina’s research in diaries, letters, archives, and art, traces the banjo’s beginnings from the seventeenth century, when enslaved people of African descent created and carried this unique instrument as they were transported and sold by slaveowners throughout the Americas, to Suriname, the Caribbean, and the colonies that became U.S. states.

It’s a fascinating book and, I hope you’ll agree, makes for a fascinating conversation.

13 Oct 2022Wildwood Flower in C at 2 tempos - 75 bpm & 85 bpm00:10:48

This week we've got a bonus episode!

As we've been playing Wildwood Flower for the past two weeks, I thought it would be fun to have a run through at 75 bpm, then, when we're warmed up, go through it again slightly quicker at 85 bpm. It's a bit of an experiment.

We're using the jam along format - that means I'm kicking off playing backup and you're on the tune, then we swap and go round 4 times. Then, after a quick pause, we do the whole thing again at 85 bpm.

Have a go and see what you think. If you like it, let me know and I'll do more of these for other tunes too. Don't forget to grab a chord sheet if you need one from bluegrassjamalong.com

Happy picking!

14 Nov 2022Tim Stafford Interview01:13:34

My guest this week is Tim Stafford.

Tim is a multi award winning guitarist, songwriter, singer, producer and author.

We covered a lot of ground, including the recent Blue Highway Fest, Tim's songwriting partnerships,  how bluegrass has changed in the last 15 years, why he has no time for people moaning about Billy Strings and, of course, plenty of Tony Rice chat (including the wonderful biography of Tony Tim co-wrote and the CD box set he's currently working on!)

For news and updates go to Tim's website and Facebook page

Find out more about Tim's book on Tony Rice (and order your copy)

You should also check out Tim's recent collaboration with Thomm Jutz

18 Nov 2022Turkey in the Straw in G at 2 tempos - 75 bpm & 85 bpm00:15:48

A couple of weeks ago I released an episode where we played Wildwood Flower back to back at two different speeds  - once at 75 bpm then again at 85. It proved so popular I've decided to do the same with some more tunes! This week it's Turkey in the Straw, again at 75 and 85 and we're in the key of G.

We're using the jam along format - that means I'm kicking off playing backup and you're on the tune, then we swap and go round 4 times. Then, after a quick pause, we do the whole thing again at 85 bpm.

Don't forget to grab a chord sheet if you need one from bluegrassjamalong.com

Happy picking!

24 Nov 2022Harry Clark (East Nash Grass/Dan Tyminski) interview00:44:24

My guest this week is Harry Clark, a recipient of the 2022 IBMA Momentum Instrumentalist of the Year award.

Harry plays mandolin with East Nash Grass as well as in Dan Tyminski's band, both of which have new records due out in 2023.  He also played in the band for Bronwyn Keith-Hynes' fabulous record 'Fiddler's Pastime.' Both Dan and Bronwyn were full of praise for Harry's playing when I interviewed them (you'll find links to those interviews on the Bluegrass Jam Along website).

We chatted about how Harry got into mandolin, how East Nash Grass got together and how Harry got the gig with Dan Tyminski, as well as the time he ordered a new mandolin, only to have the US Mail lose it for three months!

For updates check out Harry's Instagram and the East Nash Grass website

Check out Dan Tyminski's website for updates on that record and Dan's  live shows.

Happy picking!

02 Dec 2022Food for Thought - Tuning Your Ear (Tim Stafford on electronic tuners and Tony Rice's tuning)00:05:42

Hi everyone.

I've got another quick Food for Thought episode for you, inspired by my recent interview with Tim Stafford. Tim told me nobody could tune a guitar like Tony Rice and that he thought that was a big part of his sound.  He said we've all lost the ability to tune because we rely on electronic tuners too much, but suggests a new way to use them that will actually help improve our ears.

It's really simple, but effective (I've tried it and it's working already!)

If you missed the full interview with Tim you can find it here

05 Dec 2022Tonewoods Special with Nully from Collings Guitars01:05:36

Steve Nall (Nully), Collings' Head of Production, returns to the podcast to chat about tonewoods. When Nully was originally on the podcast in July we touched on this and I thought it would make for a great episode in its own right, as it's something lots of us have questions about.

We start with a look at the woods typically used in bluegrass guitars, why they're chosen and what the different bits of the instrument contribute to the sound of a guitar. We then look at alternative types of wood, what happens to wood as it ages and how wood is treated in an attempt to replicate the sound of vintage guitars.

We also look at alternative sources of wood, from 'sinker' logs to reclaimed wood, and why this is so important for the future of guitar making.

It's always a pleasure chatting to Nully and I found this conversation really interesting - I hope you do too!

For more info check out the Collings Guitars website or follow Collings Guitars on Instagram

If you want to check out the guitars made with reclaimed wood Nully mentioned, head to Collings Facebook page for some great photos of them.

If you missed the original interview I did with Nully, you'll find a link on the Bluegrass Jam Along website, as well as links to all the other interview episodes on the podcast.

Happy picking.

03 Jan 2023Nick Lloyd interview - copying Edgar Meyer's bass for Paul Kowert01:01:32

My guest this week is Nick Lloyd of Nick Lloyd basses.

I recently interviewed Paul Kowert of Hawktail and Punch Brothers (see episode 228 if you missed that). Shortly after, I got an email from Nick saying he'd heard the interview and that he'd made the bass Paul talked about. We got chatting and I asked him if he'd be up for coming on the podcast to talk about that, as well as bass making in general. So, here he is!

I really enjoyed this one. We talked about how Nick got into bass making, how he was inspired by Edgar Meyer and how, eventually, he wound up making a copy of Edgar's bass for Paul.

There's so much cool stuff in this episode - I really hope you enjoy it.

I've also released a companion episode to this one where I chat to Paul about the process of commissioning the bass and working with Nick (episode 246). Don't forget to check that one out too.

You'll find info on Nick and his basses at the Nick Lloyd Basses website

03 Jan 2023Paul Kowert mini interview - commissioning Nick Lloyd to make a copy of Edgar Meyer's bass00:18:09

This episode features a short interview with Paul Kowert of Hawktail and Punch Brothers talking about his Nick Lloyd double bass.

I interviewed Nick about making the bass (episode 245) and thought it would be cool to chat to Paul about what makes the instrument special and why he wanted a copy of Edgar Meyer's bass in the first place.

You'll also get to hear a track from Hawktail's latest release 'Place of Growth' featuring Paul playing the bass we're talking about.

Hope you enjoy it!

You'll find info on Nick and his basses at the Nick Lloyd Basses website

Check out Hawktail's website for more info on the record (and make sure you sign up to their mailing list for updates and tour info).

09 Jan 2023Eric Skye interview01:12:01
My guest this week is guitarist Eric Skye.

We covered a lot of ground, including Eric's Santa Cruz signature model guitar, the joys of playing tunes slowly, why tone is so important and, especially, his wonderful new record of fiddle tune duets with Jamie Stillway, 'Over the Waterfall', which is released on January 13th.

I loved this chat. My favourite conversations on the podcast tend to be more about why people play music, rather than what they play, and this is a wonderful example of the former.

For more info check out the Eric Skye website. Make sure you check out the cool set of TABs on the teaching page, where you'll also find a link to the 30 day challenge we talked about. For more regular updates,  follow Eric on Instagram.

14 Jan 2023Jack Hinshelwood (Doc at 100) interview00:41:12

My guest this week is Jack Hinshelwood.

Jack is a guitarist, fiddler, singer and winner of the Knoxville World’s Fair Guitar Championship, the Wayne Henderson Guitar Championship, and a two-time winner of the Galax Fiddler’s Convention guitar contest.

He joins me to chat about Doc at 100, a really special set of shows he's co-producing to celebrate what would have been Doc Watson's 100th birthday this year. The shows feature Doc's long time collaborators Jack Lawrence and T. Michael Coleman, plus guitar maker (and friend of Doc's) Wayne Henderson and co-producer Ted Olson, author of “Doc’s World: Traditional Plus,” the book that accompanies the 4 CD compilation by Craft Records called Doc Watson, Life’s Work: A Retrospective

There's a list of the shows here, including a very special show on Doc's actual birthday, where Doc at 100 guests at a Billy Strings show, alongside Bryan Sutton and Molly Tuttle. More shows will be added through the year so keep checking back to see if they're headed your way.

We also chat about Jack's record 50 Years in the Making and play a track from it at the end.

I've got some more exciting news to share about the 100th anniversary of Doc's birthday - more on that soon....

27 Jan 2023Sierra Hull interview00:34:57

My guest this week is Sierra Hull.

I caught up with Sierra before the London show on her UK tour with Justin Moses.

We chatted about how spending so much time at home over the course of the pandemic changed her outlook on things and about some of the collaborations she's been part of over the past year, including touring with Cory Wong and her involvement in Bela Fleck's 'My Bluegrass Heart' record and tour.

We also talk about the new record Sierra's currently in the process of making, her ArtistWorks course and much more.

It was a treat to record and a great way to celebrate Bluegrass Jam Along's 250th episode!

Thanks to Maria Ivey and Kerry Fee for their help in making this happen.

Make sure you check out Sierra's website for  tour dates, info and news.

You can also keep in touch via Sierra's Instagram and Facebook

03 Feb 2023Tony Trischka has dinner with Bill Monroe00:04:05

This is a really quick bonus episode I wanted to share with you all.

I'm putting together a Doc Watson 100th birthday episode, which is due out in March. I've interviewed lots of amazing guests for that and one of them was the wonderful Tony Trischka. At the end of our chat Tony told me a story about meeting Bill Monroe - it doesn't fit in the Doc episode but it's really cool and I wanted to share it. So here it is!

That's it,  just a quick anecdote to listen to in a quiet five minutes!

01 Mar 2023Doc Watson's 100th birthday celebration - part 102:07:27

Hi everyone.

Today (March 3rd 2023) would have been Doc Watson's 100th birthday, so I've put together a couple of really special episodes to celebrate.

I spent the past 3 months interviewing people who knew, played with, worked with, were inspired by or just loved Doc and his music. I ended up with hours and hours of wonderful conversation and have edited it all into two episodes. This is the first....

This one focusses on those who worked and played with Doc, plus a couple of people responsible for carrying on his legacy.

You'll hear from:

  • Happy Traum, founder of Homespun Music on getting to know and working with Doc
  • John McEuen from the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band on recording the seminal Will the Circle Be Unbroken record with Doc
  • T. Michael Coleman on 15 years playing and touring with Doc
  • Jack Lawrence on his 20 years with Doc
  • Lindsay Craven, Artist Relations Manager at MerleFest on making sure Doc's vision lives on at the festival
  • Ted Olson, who wrote the book that accompanies the box set Life's Work: A Retrospective

All of these are brand new interviews carried out for these episodes. They've been a joy to put together.

I hope you enjoy them (and don't forget to check out episode 2).

Happy picking (and happy birthday Doc!)

09 Mar 2023John McEuen (Nitty Gritty Dirt Band) interview00:35:17

My guest this week is John McEuen, founding member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

I recently put together two special episodes to celebrate Doc Watson's 100th birthday (links below in case you missed those). I interviewed over a dozen guests and John was kind enough to take part and share some memories of recording Will the Circle Be Unbroken with Doc. Those episodes ended up being so long I didn't have room for all of the conversation I had with John, but there was so much great stuff in there I decided to release the whole thing. Here it is!

There's plenty more about Will the Circle... in here, but we also chat about John's favourite music he's made since then, playing with Earl Scruggs at IBMA, producing Steve Martin's Grammy winning album The Crow and plenty more.

It was a great conversation to get to be a part of and I really hope you enjoy it.

Links to stuff we talked about

For tour dates, info and details of John's book about the ...Circle sessions, visit John McEuen's website

For updates and news check out John's Facebook and Instagram pages

Do go and listen to John's fantastic album String Wizards, which includes the track he talks about, Carolina Traveler
