28 Sep 2020Alexis O'Reilly: Pura Vida in Costa Rica00:22:41

After Alexis O’Reilly and her family literally became sick from the effects of workplace marginalization and a sedentary lifestyle in the States, what started off as a 1-year sabbatical ended up with the family discovering the health and wellness they desperately craved in the jungles of Costa Rica.

Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Alexis is now an Integrative Health & Wellness Coach in Nosara, Costa Rica. This new role connects various facets of wellness that many individuals need in terms of education, motivation, and advocacy to find success. Today, her coaching has helped many clients transform their lives by being a supportive mentor and wellness advocate to help women feel their best through food and lifestyle changes.

Alexis’ Blaxit Blueprint:

1. Pay Attention to the Signs: While Alexis and her husband had achieved success in their chosen professions, the stress of their lifestyle began taking a toll on their health. The birth of their son served as the impetus for a re-evaluation of what was important in life.

2. Turn Your Mess Into Your Message: Once in Costa Rica, Alexis re-evaluated the foods she and her family consumed. Her research led her to become a successful integrated health and wellness coach.

3. Perfecting the Pivot: Due to the pandemic, Alexis has pivoted her business model into a virtual one and expanded her clientele and offerings. In 2021, she plans to open a multi-purpose facility in Costa Rica offering her own herbal and botanical ingredients onsite while hosting retreats in partnership with plant medicine practitioners, along with physical and mental health wellness professionals.

26 Oct 2020Marsha Ganthier: La vie à Paris00:32:14

Marsha Ganthier is a marketing executive with 10+ years of healthcare industry experience. Born and raised in a small town in New Jersey, her Haitian upbringing left her feeling drawn to the Francophile part of her culture. Marsha caught the travel bug early and even spent some time abroad while finishing up her International Marketing degree. Living in Europe always felt like a natural next step and she realized that destiny three years ago when she moved to Paris, France. Her passions include her 7 year-old poodle Max, cooking, eating diverse cuisines, and traveling the world.

Marsha's Blaxit Blueprint

1. Embrace Your Heritage: Marsha's Haitian upbringing served as the foundation for her interest in living in France. As a Francophile, Marsha's drive to immerse herself in French culture was nurtured by her supportive family.

2. Design Your Destiny: Studying in Paris while pursuing her International Marketing degree, further ignited Marsha's desire to live in the 'City of Lights'. Even though she returned to the States to work in the healthcare industry for several years, Marsha never gave up on her goal. Her persistence paid off when she landed a role in Paris.

3. Resolute Resilience: Relocating to France came with its set of challenges including navigating the visa process, language, taxes, along with adjusting to business and cultural norms. Throughout it all, Marsha's resilience and commitment to living out her dream have enabled her to succeed even during the most trying times.

To read about my time visiting Marsha in Paris, check out "The Language of Learning".

24 Apr 2023Natalie Wester: Mid-life Reimagined in Lourinhã00:55:51

I'm so happy to share this episode of the Blaxit Global podcast. In this episode, I reunite with Natalie Wester who was featured in the Condé Nast article I wrote, How to Retire in Portugal: A Complete Guide, and our popular Moving Abroad Over 50 panel on our YouTube channel.

Natalie  Wester is a former second-grade teacher and National State Teacher of the Year who retired from teaching as a second career at 59. A radical reinventor, permission-giver, and storyteller, she encourages midlife women to give themselves permission to change the life they're living so they can live a life they love.

By 60 she became a solo around-the-world traveler and recovering social media avoider. At 61, she launched The Hot Goddess blog for midlife women and started a "blackboard to bourbon" journey by developing a Midlife Reimagined Apprenticeship and becoming a whiskey distillery intern. At 62, she became an expat and now calls Lourinhã, Portugal home.

Blaxit Global Remix:

Lately, it feels like more and more people are talking about, 'Blaxit'.  In fact, CNN's Don Lemon recently devoted an episode of his podcast to the subject.  Depending on who you ask, you'll get a different definition. During my chat with Deirdre Amola in Episode 2, 'Balance in Bali', I asked her how she defined the term.

09 Nov 2020Nii Armah & Kristin Tellis Quaye: Greatness in Ghana00:47:38

Nii Armah Quaye and Kristin Tellis Quaye are the founders of Certified Africa. A travel and lifestyle company that is assisting the African Diaspora to travel, relocate, and start businesses in Ghana and other African countries.  They are a Ghanaian and African-American/Caribbean couple. Nii was born and raised in Ghana for 25 plus years before moving to America and making a conscious decision to go back and do business. Kristin has lived, studied, and worked in Ghana for extended periods of time and has started several businesses with her husband Nii in Ghana. They live between Ghana and the States as they build a bridge between the African Diaspora and Africa.

Nii & Kristin’s Blaxit Blueprint:

1. Manage Your Mindset - Kristin and Nii encourage those who are considering relocating to the Motherland to begin their journey by doing some internal work on their mindset and managing expectations so as not to carry maladaptive western beliefs to Africa.

2. Be Relational - Unlike America, Ghana (and the Continent) is all about relationships. Utilizing a trusted partner, like Certified Africa, to establish connections will make your journey go much smoother.

3. Economic Opportunity - Ghana offers an incredible amount of opportunity for members of the diaspora. From entrepreneurship to land ownership, the possibilities are endless. The goal should always be to enrich Ghana (Africa), not to take from it.

23 Nov 2020Season 1 Finale: Casting Your Vision00:22:20

The Season 1 finale of the Blaxit Global podcast is dedicated to helping you cast the vision for your new life abroad. Host Chrishan Wright shares her three takeaways from the first season of the show, along with updates on her own Blaxit journey.

Season 1 Takeaways:

  1. Mindset - Take this time to focus on your mindset. Journal your feelings and beliefs to help you unlock your limitless potential. You are worthy of living the life of your dreams.

  2. Control - With so many areas of our lives that feel out of control, it is often difficult to gain control. The things you can control are organizing your finances and set some goals for the upcoming year. This will help increase the likelihood of you having a successful move abroad.

  3. Passion - The road abroad is different for each person yet the common ground among all of our guests was finding the nexus between their passion and their purpose. Discover what lights you up and begin to cast a vision for your new life. Creating a vision board is helpful to visualize the reality that you seek.

04 Jan 2021Shantel Asante-Kissi: Better in Brussels00:56:24

Shantel Asante-Kissi is a real estate developer who has lived all over the world. Born and raised in Chicago, she’s spent time in Wisconsin, North Carolina, and New Jersey before relocating to Brussels, Belgium with her husband of 25 years and two children. She has completely caught the travel bug in Europe and uses travel as a way to educate her children. Hear how her experience was getting started in Belgium, the biggest lifestyle changes compared to the U.S. and navigating the financial and tax landscape.

Shantel's Blaxit Blueprint:

1. Declaring Your Intention: Shantel recognized that the racial climate in the U.S. was not the best environment to enable her children to flourish. The safety of Brussels and its proximity to many other countries within Europe now serves as the backdrop of their global classroom.

2. Get the Support You Need: Shantel and her husband have developed a rhythm over the course of their 25-year marriage. Part of what enables them to manage extended time away from one another includes encouraging Shantel to get the help she needs. Shantel credits this for her ability to adapt and adjust to change.

3. Family Motto:  The Kissi family motto continues to guide their life pursuits, "connect to as many people and places as possible and you'll identify your passions". Shantel is enjoying this new phase of her life as a trailing spouse and fully embraces what lies ahead.

18 Jan 2021Phil - The Blerd Explorer: ESL in Incheon00:30:05

Phil "The Blerd Explorer", is an ESL teacher in Incheon, South Korea. Born on a military base in Mississippi, he grew up in Alabama, Washington, and South Carolina before seeing an ad to become a teacher in South Korea. He’s the author of The Black Traveler’s Guide to Incheon, South Korea, and uses his travel content to encourage the Black community to get out of their comfort zone and see the world. Hear the ups and downs of teaching ESL in South Korea, the Korean language barrier and transportation tips, and what you can expect when moving to Asia.

Phil's Blaxit Blueprint:

1) Get Clear About What You Don't Want:
Phil always had a love of travel and wanted to travel on his own terms.  He knew that he did not want to pursue the military as a pathway to traveling abroad. Becoming an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher provided the opportunity to move abroad.

2) Understanding the System: Being an ESL teacher in South Korea comes with its own set of challenges including navigating "the system" as it relates to the different types of employment options. Phil has had his share of unpleasant employment experiences but it hasn't deterred him from enjoying his time in South Korea.

3) Creating New Opportunities: Given the requirements of his visa, Phil cannot create a secondary income stream which became a challenge after becoming furloughed due to the pandemic. Phil was able to think outside of the box and channel his love of Incheon to help other Black travelers into "The Black Traveler's Guide to Incheon, South Korea".  The book served as a creative outlet as well as providing some income for him as he awaits reinstatement at his job.

22 Nov 2021Thea Duncan: Making it in Milan00:44:06

Thea Duncan: Making it in Milan

Thea Duncan is the Founder of Doing Italy, an online training company that helps people gain the knowledge they need to move to Italy with ease while avoiding many of the pitfalls that negatively affect other expats when moving abroad.

Trinidad and Tobago-born, and Miami-raised, Duncan spent much of her life traveling the globe, before Italy captured her heart. She studied for her master’s degree at Milan’s Bocconi University in the early 2000s, later holding roles with some of Italy’s most storied fashion and design houses – including Gucci and Luxottica.

Doing Italy, which began as Duncan’s effort to connect with travelers and curate her Milan, now offers the opportunity to get an even more authentic understanding of Italian culture by helping them move abroad. The company offers 1:1 sessions and group coaching where students dive into just about everything a foreigner should know about moving to Italy. This includes insights into the Italian job market, to why, if an Italian home announcement says an apartment is unfurnished, it most likely means you literally need to bring your own kitchen sink.

31 Aug 2020Gabriel Leavell: Contemporary Renaissance in Johannesburg00:31:44

Gabriel Leavell is the quintessential Renaissance man. He is an accomplished multi-industry entrepreneur with a focus on hospitality. After finding success running several Airbnb’s in the U.S and Mexico, Gabriel combined that experience along with his passion for art & design, into the luxurious magnificence known as Daze House in Johannesburg, South Africa. From fashion to real estate, Gabriel has always had a focus on intention. With his most recent project Daze House, Leavell is looking to expand this boutique hotel brand to an international presence.

Gabriel's Blaxit Blueprint

  1. Break The Mold: Growing up in Everett, WA, Gabriel was born with a desire to break the mold. Leavell fought the trajectory of his small-town upbringing which most likely ended up with him working on the assembly line at Boeing.

  2. Don't Be Afraid to Experiment: Gabriel constantly hustled, trying his hand at any and every business of that interested him. Though he experienced many "failures", he took away valuable lessons that helped him evolve into the dynamic entrepreneur he is today.
  3. Focus on Intention: As Gabriel adjusts to living in South Africa and operating a hotel in the country, he approaches everything with a level of intention. He intentionally hires locals for his projects, inviting conversation, and creating an evolving ecosystem inspired by several African countries through Daze House.
