In this episode, we discuss the biggest news items in bitcoin and money for the week. It was a bit of a slower news cycle, with people absorbing the bank failures and market movement. How are stocks rallying despite the looming financial crisis? That is the major question we answer in this episode. Expectations for the market and actual market performance are directly conflicting. The most anticipated recession in history will likely not turn out as all those people expect. 

There is also a whole lot of talk about the decline of the dollar. Alternatives like settling in Yuan, or forming a whole new currency like a new Gaucho between Argentina and Brazil, or a BRICS currency are all over the headlines. Is this new or normal and we are just noticing it now?

Another topic this week is FEDNOW. We address the controversy surrounding its launch in July. Is it a CBDC? Absolutely not. FEDNOW is a payment rail. It competes with PayPal, not bitcoin or the dollar. This is not the Federal Reserve moving toward a CBDC, it is the Fed offering a payment solution.

This week on the Bitcoin Magazine Podcast, host Christian Keroles sits down with Professor of Philosophy at Northern Illinois University Craig Warmke. Professor Warmke is quite unique in academia because he has fallen deep down the Bitcoin rabbit hole. As a scholar in philosophy, ethics, and human nature Craig is fascinated by Bitcoin's incentive structure and the implications of Bitcoin on society.

Professor Warmke is saddened by the state of academia and laments about the broken incentives around tenure that force academics to hyper specialize rather than encouraging them to take more complete and wholistic world views and studies. Warmke believes it is this hyper focus in academia that causes most academics to miss Bitcoin altogether.

Professor Warmke is currently managing a research collective around the ethics and philosophy around Bitcoin called Resistance.money with 2 fellow Bitcoin Philosophers Andrew Bailey and Bradley Rettler. The three write papers to demystify why Bitcoin is good as well as they are working on a book titled Resistance Money.

Payments on the internet have always been a weakness. An entire Frankenstein mash up of surveillance, credit card payments, walled garden ecosystems emerged as the way for the internet and internet companies to monetize. Freemium and ad driven models became the way that users were monetized but if you get something for free you are the product and in 2021 this is turning into a problem. Stephan Dodge and Ian Major, the co-founders of BYOD, think bitcoin can fix this. 

Host Christian Keroles sits down with these ambitious entrepreneurs to discuss how the emerging Bitcoin ecosystem and tech stack is enabling people to take the power back over their data and to even monetize it. BYOD is a solution built on top of Bitcoin and the Stack 2 blockchain to enable users to create advertising profiles and in a cryptographically secure and distributed manner host and sell access to their data. Dodge and Major believe that BYOD will create a better customer profile and a better experience for both advertisers and customers. Users will get paid out in Bitcoin and have more granular control than ever over how their data is used.

Beyond just the application that BYOD is pioneering, Stephan and Ian both are incredibly excited about how well the bitcoin ecosystem and tech stack are developing. A few years ago it would not have been possible for them to build a solution like BYOD using Bitcoin in a way they deemed sufficiently decentralized. In this episode, we discuss the bitcoin price and a few macro charts up front. I always try to keep our viewers and listeners ahead of other macro sources. For example, this week, we report on the diving 4-week Treasury bill. Something is going on behind the scenes in the market causing this major move.

Other charts we look at are the dollar $DXY on a longer time frame, oil’s reaction to the OPEC+ cut, and total deposits at commercial banks in the US. For all these charts go to the post on bitcoinandmarkets.com.

The main part of the show today is on the testimony of SEC chairman Gary Gensler in front of the Senate Finance Committee. We watched a couple clips that made their way around the internet this week. The attitude of the questions were very popular with crypto bros, but we could see through this attempt at theater. Gensler didn’t seem surprised or rattled in the least.

Lastly, we cover the speech by Christine Lagarde about the fragmentation of the global order. We had to cover it in haste at the end of the show, but I think we covered all the main points. She confirms my narrative that the end of the global order is upon us. However, she refuses to mention the elephants in the room. She doesn’t mention “credit”, “debt” or “deflation” once. She does say “gold” but also avoids the term “bitcoin” in favor of “digital currencies”.

In this episode, Christian and Ansel give updates on the Federal Reserve, ECB, and PBOC. Europe is the most exciting because last week they updated their policy, admitting they are fighting deflation, economic contraction, and a strong euro, despite the 1.85 trillion euro stimulus this year alone. It seems the more they do, the worse their situation gets.

The Fed meets Wednesday, December 16th, for their final meeting of the year, in which they are expected to keep everything the same. Next, we cover the PBOC’s recent troubles with defaults throughout their economy, and the increasing amount of stimulus they are providing.

Lastly, what would a bitcoin podcast be without a discussion about MicroStrategy and MassMutual. Bitcoiners have been expecting this type of adoption for years, so it is exciting but expected.

Lastly, we scan through the rapidly evolving situation in regards to China. Not only is there diplomatic and military news, but there is a ton of financial news. We focus on the latter. Story #1 is about Chinese banks getting a tongue lashing from CCP, putting them in their place as lubricant providers, not part of the "new elite". Story #2 is about China falling out of the top-3 most attractive destinations for foreign investment. Our final article is about mainland China making it more difficult to get brokerage accounts in Hong Kong which enables Chinese citizens to invest abroad. We tie this last point into the news about Hong Kong also opening back up to Bitcoin.

In this episode, I was once again joined by special co-host Nolan to go through the upcoming US debt ceiling debate, December US Producer Price Index (PPI), bitcoin at Davos 2023, and a new report from the Bank of International Settlements (BIS) discussing how to stop bitcoin. It was a fun and jam-packed episode.

The December PPI was a shocker, -0.5% month-over-month for the headline number. Goods PPI was -1.6% and energy was -7.9%. These are large negative numbers and when paired with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for December show a seachange in these so-called inflation metrics. Everything is pointing to a rapid and sudden reversal of these price measures.

Davos had a panel where they discussed the “crypto” industry, because they are too scared to say “bitcoin” and give it special attention. We breakdown several aspects of what the panel said. I can sum it up as follows, ‘we need to find a way to regulate bitcoin so our client who want to invest and make gains still can. So, we don’t want to kill it. We also, don’t want to give it legitimacy through regulation, because that will eat away at our control of money. But it’s not all that important anyway, so don’t attract attention to it by treating it as such.’ Something like that.

The BIS report was very interesting. They are looking for ways to stop bitcoin, but they had to conclude that it can’t be banned or contained. It can be regulated, but that brings up a myriad of very hard questions that they don’t know how to answer yet.

This week for the Bitcoin Magazine podcast, host Christian Keroles sat down with young Bitcoin developer Gloria Zhao to discuss her story and contributions to Bitcoin core. Gloria grew up in the bay area and led the elite Blockchain at Berkeley group at UC Berkeley. Gloria discusses the misaligned incentives for top college developers pulling them toward altcoin and defi projects. Gloria stated that she needed to be in tune with herself and her motivations in order to see Bitcoin Core as a viable and exciting career path.

Gloria's talent was quickly discovered by top Bitcoin contributors and she started as the first fellow of nonprofit Bitcoin development organization, Brink Bitcoin. Gloria is currently working on the very important and thankless work improving the p2p layer between nodes. Her specific projects are called Package Mempool Acceptance. P2P development is incredibly stressful because it is how nodes talk to each other and there is massive opportunity for an attack on Bitcoin.

Fed vs ECB - FED 33

In this episode of Fed Watch, Christian and Ansel get into specifics on the plans of the ECB in regard to their digital euro. We are told in the media that central banks are very much going to be releasing a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) and it will have damaging effects. However, on this podcast we get our information directly from the source. First, we must answer is a digital euro likely and why, which is what we do in this episode. In later episodes we will cover the side-effects of CBDCs if there are any.

On November 30, 2020, the President of the ECB, Christine Lagarde released a blog post detailing the ECB’s current thoughts on money and how a digital euro, or CBDC, fits into their plans. I talked about this on my recent episode of Bitcoin & Markets, and Christian wanted to explore the idea of the worries of the ECB specifically, because their thinking seems to be heavily worried about monetary sovereignty.

That term, “monetary sovereignty” came up several times is Lagarde’s blog post in context to why they feel pursuing a CBDC is necessary. This contrasts Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell’s comments which focus on patience and conservatism instead of worries about monetary sovereignty. Why is this?

Most likely this is because their already are digital stablecoins, similar to how a digital euro would function, in the market. There is a big problem in the free market offerings of these stablecoins, from the ECB vantage point; they are 99% US dollar based. If the ECB were not to act, the market might completely bypass use of the euro in favor of a digital dollar. That is a scary possibility for the ECB, so they must provide that option for the market, and maybe even require its use in some cases to maintain the euro’s global position.

This episode also discusses the recent MicroStrategy “bonds for bitcoin” proposal. Listen to find out if this is the first signs of the long awaited “speculative attack” on fiat by bitcoin, and what to watch out for as this move receives the keen attention of regulators.

We also discuss jurisdictional arbitrage at length. How does bitcoin enable jurisdictional arbitrage even within the regions, like between US States or European countries? Of course, as good bitcoiners, this leads us to a cosmic back and forth about citadel locations, and the best place to live in the future from a freedom and economic standpoint.

It is often difficult for people to get into Bitcoin without already being primed to align with one of Bitcoin’s strange attributes. Parker Lewis described Bitcoins strangeness as “being counterintuitive, and then hyper-intuitive” after one puts in enough work to understand it. 

Like many Bitcoiners, Kit Stanwood needed to hear about Bitcoin a couple of times before it clicked. But once it did click, it became hyper-intuitive and she dove right in! Stanwood is now the social media manager for Bitcoin Magazine and a savage Bitcoiner roaming the U.S. getting paid to blog.

In this episode of The Van Wirdum Sjorsnado, hosts Aaron van Wirdum and Sjors Provoost discussed Bitcoin mempools, Child Pays For Parent (CPFP) and package relay. Package relay is the project that Gloria Zhao will work on as part of her Brink fellowship, which was announced earlier this week, and would make the Lightning Network more robust (among other benefits). Mempools are the collections of unconfirmed transactions stored by nodes, from which they forward transactions to peers. Miners usually select the transactions from their mempools that include the highest fees, to include these in the blocks they mine. Mempools can get full, however, at which point transactions that pay the lowest fees are ejected. This is actually a problem in context of CPFP, a trick that lets users speed up low-fee transactions by spending the coins from that transactions in a new transaction with a high fee to compensate. Tricks like these can be particularly important in the context of time-sensitive protocols like the Lightning Network. In this episode, van Wirdum and Provoost explained how package relay could enable CPFP, even in cases where low-fee transactions are dropped from mempools, by bundling transactions into packets. And they explore why this may be easier said than done.

They step through the crisis, from the central banks’ position upon entering 2020, through the panic months of March and April, to how they all ended the year in a holding pattern.

The Fed gets blamed for unleashing a flood of liquidity and money printing on the world, but in fact, they were probably the most reserved out of the major central banks. If anyone should suffer inflation of their currency it is the Bank of Japan. Their central bank balance sheet alone is now 126% of their countries GDP, and the ECB’s balance sheet is over 55% of the Eurozone GDP. The Fed looks the tamest of the three in this respect, coming in at only 34%. If QE is money printing, we should expect inflation in these smaller currencies first, but what do we see? They are stuck in deflation and heading for another crash.

Lastly, Christian and Ansel sum up what they think about this year in regards to central banks and bitcoin.

We've all seen it: Our social media feeds suddenly inundated with ads related to products or services we had just been browsing for.

In an increasingly cashless society, our everyday payments are being tracked and monitored by third parties in an attempt to learn our habits so they can advertise to us more effectively. Tracking our shopping habits to market to us might not be that nefarious, but in some parts of the world this same technology is used to suppress free speech or even effect one's "social credit score," as in China. While more free societies haven't gotten there yet, it could become a very slippery slope, and Lightning Network payments may just be the way to curtail such activity.

This episode features Alex Gladstein of the Human Rights Foundation discussing his recent essay "The Moral Case for Lightning." We also discuss surveillance capitalism, the Hong Kong protests and how the world might evolve if Lightning payments are adopted by the masses.

In this supposedly short episode that went long, Dave and Grahm discuss Justin Sun's winning charity bid for a lunch with Warren Buffett. Joined by Delphi Digital's Tom Shaughnessy, the three of them speculate on who they would send to lunch with Warren Buffett to convince him that Bitcoin has value. Things go off the rail a bit as they weigh the pros and cons of sending notable experts, Mike Tyson, John McAfee and Batman.

Something not touched on during the episode is the tremendous impact that Justin Sun's 4.5 million dollar donation will create for the Glide Foundation. The Glide Foundation serves the homeless population in San Francisco.

In this week’s episode of the Bitcoin Magazine Podcast host ck sits down with Edan Yago of the Soveryn Project to discuss Soveryn and how they are building decentralized infrastructure for Bitcoin. 

Soveryn is like a company except that it runs completely on bitcoin and they are not incorporated in any company. It is a fully remote new kind of company that is fluid, distributed, and powered by Bitcoin. 

Soveryn has developed an exchange and programmatic USD coin system leveraging the RSK Bitcoin sidechain and they are actively looking at other BTC layer two technology to scale their services. 

Soveryn likes RSK’s technology because it is based off of the existing Ethereum technology stack making it interoperable with the entire ethereum defi ecosystem. Eden discusses how the members of the Soveryn team refer to themselves as Bitcoin Mutants rather than Bitcoin Maximalists. According to Yago, the Mutants understand that Bitcoin is key but they are not afraid to leverage the decentralized tech being built elsewhere. They see the Ethereum and altcoin ecosystem as an opportunity for Bitcoin to conquer as the defacto money and trading pair. 

The Soveryn team sees Bitcoin as the main building block of the new decentralized economy and think Bitcoiners should not settle for centralized technology solutions.

Alex Gladstein debates Aleks Svetski about Bitcoin vs. Democracy in this episode. They delve into topics such as rulership, voting, and whether or not a government can exist on a bitcoin standard.
