12 Jul 2024 | Alex Halperin: Illegal Pesticides in Legal Cannabis | 00:47:19
On this week’s episode, Dr. Riley Kirk discusses illegal pesticides found in legal California cannabis products with Alex Halperin, the founder of WeedWeek and one of the main reporters on this topic. They review what pesticides were found, how this investigation started, and how the industry can improve these findings.
This article is very important for medical users to be aware of and is unfortunately another reason why we need to have the right to homegrow. Most labs when analyzing cannabis products are using a targeted method of analysis, meaning they know what molecules they are looking for and they report on those specific compounds. However, in this case, the illegal pesticides were not known, so they were not tested for. This brings up the issue if the cannabis industry needs to implement some form of testing to ensure we are not missing anything potentially harmful in the products.
If you want to read the pdf of the article for free, see the full list of pesticides that were found in this study with the known health risks, and find out what brands tested hot all this info is linked is Riley’s Patreon.
Thanks always for listening and special thanks to anyone who has given Bioactive a 5 star review - mad love my friends and see you in 2 weeks!

26 Apr 2024 | Standardizing the Cannabis Industry with Darwin Millard | 01:17:50
How do we standardize an industry that is known as the wild west?
It's definitely difficult to implement standards in the cannabis industry but people like todays guest, Darwin Millard are working hard to ensure standards are in place to ensure quality and consistent products are on the legal market.
Standards are created to ensure that when you purchase a product there is no mold, pesticides, residual solvent and more. This topic is a little heavy, but very important for any consumer or manufacturer to understand.

26 Jul 2024 | Tips to Using Cannabis for Exercise with Dr. Whitney Ogle | 01:15:52
In this episode Dr. Riley Kirk interviews researcher Dr. Whitney Ogle about using cannabis for exercise, Dr. Ogle is passionate about this subject because she has found the benefits of medicating before runs, hikes and other forms of exercise and believes it can be a tool to a healthier lifestyle.
Dr. Kirk and Dr. Ogle talk about what reserach that is currently happening, how both of them personally integrate cannabis and exercise, navigating difficult conversations, the role of CBD and more.
Dr. Ogle's Bio: My personal mission is to make the science of human movement meaningful, understandable, and applicable to daily life. I am guided by my values in finding connections among concepts from diverse sources, striking a balance between cultivating new ideas and improving on current designs, and continual growth by learning with and from others.
Originally from Chicagoland, I have moved all over the United States for school and work. I earned my Bachelors degree in Exercise Science from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. While in my Doctorate in Physical Therapy program at Regis University in Denver, Colorado, I had the opportunity to do clinical rotations in Utah, Arizona, Washington, Western Colorado, and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. After I completed my DPT degree, I worked as an outpatient orthopedic physical therapist near Seattle and helped with functional capacity evaluations of injured workers north of Seattle.
I decided to go back to school to get more involved in research at Indiana University where I earned a Masters degree in Exercise Physiology and a PhD in Human Performance with a focus on Motor Control and Motor Learning with a minor in Psychological Brain Sciences. While I was working towards these degrees, I worked as a home health physical therapist for babies 6 months to 3 years old in rural Southern Indiana and occasionally in skilled nursing facilities for older adults who were medically stable enough to be out of the hospital but not safe enough to be at home.
I was drawn to Cal Poly Humboldt because of its strong focus in social justice, giving students hands on experience with research, and because it is physically beautiful! I enjoy rock climbing, slacklining, swimming, hiking, and going on walks with my cats.

23 Aug 2024 | Breeding Cannabis for Unique Smells with Twinkle Paryani | 00:55:18
Riley sits down for the second time with reserach scientist Twinkle Paryani from Abstrax Tech.
Twinkle recently wrote a paper titled "Nonterpenoid Chemical Diversity of Cannabis Phenotypes Predicts Differentiated Aroma Characteristics"
and can be found (open-access) at https://pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10.1021/acsomega.4c03225
This paper dives into the chemistry of smell, and when cannabis breeders are breeding for unique aroma, how they should be evaluating the final product. We often attribute the smell of cannabis to the terpene profile, but there is a lot more going on than just terpenes that give this plant it's unique complex aroma.

24 Jan 2025 | Unlocking the Secrets of Hop Latent Viroid in Cannabis: Dr. Ali Bektaş | 01:06:04
In this episode of the Bioactive Podcast, host Dr. Riley Kirk dives deep into groundbreaking cannabis science with world-renowned molecular biologist Dr. Ali Bektaş. Dr. Bektaş has an impressive background in plant biology, microbes, and agriculture, specializing in affordable and distributed systems for detecting nucleic acids in agricultural environments. He has worked extensively with cannabis nurseries and biotech companies as a consultant, staff scientist, and Chief Science Officer. Notably, Dr. Bektaş was one of the first scientists to publicly identify Hop Latent Viroid (HLVd) in cannabis populations, a discovery that reshaped the industry's approach to disease management.
What is Hop Latent Viroid (HLVd)?
HLVd is a serious plant disease that infects cannabis, hop plants, and other medicinal plants like stinging nettle. Infected cannabis plants can suffer a significant reduction in cannabinoids and terpenes, drastically lowering both their monetary and medicinal value.
Dr. Kirk and Dr. Bektaş explore the origins of HLVd, how it spreads, what to look for in affected plants, prevention strategies, and how innovative genetics are helping cannabis plants overcome this disease.
🎙️ Key Topics Discussed:
Why Hop Latent Viroid is a game-changer in the cannabis industry
The science behind its spread and early warning signs
Effective prevention and management strategies
The role of genetics in combating HLVd

18 Oct 2024 | The Expanded Entourage Effect: Curating your cannabis experience with your consumption method | 00:38:47
How Consumption Methods Affect Cannabis Chemistry | Dr. Riley Kirk | Bioactive Podcast
In this episode of the Bioactive Podcast, Dr. Riley Kirk breaks down how cannabis consumption methods—whether smoking, vaping, or edibles—can impact the chemistry and effects you experience.
We often focus on strain-specific effects to curate our cannabis experience, but your method of consumption also plays a key role. Different methods produce unique combinations of compounds, changing how you experience the Entourage Effect. This theory, introduced by Dr. Ethan Russo, explains how the many compounds in cannabis work together synergistically—often making the whole experience greater than the sum of its parts.
But did you know the entourage effect varies with each consumption method? Dr. Riley Kirk shares her personal insights into how smoking, vaping, and edibles produce different results. Learn how to tailor your cannabis experience by understanding the relationship between strains and consumption methods.

21 Jul 2023 | Evaluating Synergies in Nature with Dr. Nadja Cech | 00:58:02
Join the Bioactive Community: patreon.com/cannabichem
Nothing in this podcast is medical advice, ask your doctor before trying any new products.
For centuries indigenous cultures have revered the power of natural products and in more recent years scientists have noted the chemical synergies of natural products. However, it can be VERY difficult to study these chemical synergies because to complete research you typically try to limit the amount of variables, which leads to a reductionist approach. Today I sit down and chat with Dr. Nadja Cech. Dr. Cech is a Patricia Sullivan Professor of Chemistry at UNC Greensboro and an active researcher in the field of natural product chemistry. She has published work on a variety of medicinal plants including kratom, goldenseal, echinacea, and now the synergies between phytochemicals within different plant species.

In this episode of the Bioactive Podcast, we dive deep into a lesser-known but serious condition known as Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS). Join host Dr. Riley Kirk and guests Dr. Codi Peterson and Megan Mbengue as they explore the paradox of CHS, where in some rare cases, regular cannabis use leads to severe nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, despite cannabis being commonly used for its anti-nausea properties.
We discuss the symptoms, the prodrome phase, and the potential genetic components that may predispose individuals to CHS. The episode also highlights an ongoing study being conducted by Dr. Kirk, Dr. Peterson and Megan Mbengue with the University of California, Irvine, aimed at understanding CHS better and improving diagnosis and treatment options.
Listeners will learn about the unique relief some patients find in hot showers and capsaicin cream, as well as the challenges healthcare professionals face in diagnosing this condition. We also touch on the importance of understanding the role of THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids in relation to CHS, and the implications for cannabis users.
Whether you're a cannabis consumer, a healthcare professional, or just curious about CHS, this episode provides valuable insights and encourages participation in the ongoing research to better understand this complex syndrome.

29 Sep 2023 | Cannabis Mindset with Phil Stille | 01:19:45
With any substance we use regularly, wether it be weed, alcohol, nicotine, caffeine or something else it's important to evaluate your relationship with it and make sure its adding value to your life.
Todays episode is with Phil Stille who has struggled with his relationship with cannabis in the past and has learned ways to be kinder to himself and to cannabis via changing his mindset.
I came across Phil a few months ago on social media and wanted to have a longer conversation to learn about his journey with cannabis over the years.
In this episode we talk about mindset, intention, imposter syndrome, escapism, and so much more.
WARNING, there is some explicit language in this episode.
While not everyone struggles with their relationship with cannabis, I think it's safe to say that many people do and as a community we should try to help people find balance in their lives rather than judging in any way.
Not everything in this episode is going to pertain to everyone, and we fully realize that issues go much deeper than what we are discussing here. Often times, inner peace and comfort will take many tools alongside cannabis like talking with loved ones and mental health professionals.
Nothing in this podcast is medical advice, and as always I appreciate your support <3
