Really interesting that the National government, who wants to get rid of parliament employee bonuses, started with Māori speakers. Farmers will have to pay for agricultural emissions under a scheme proposed by the Government in response to advice from the sector and the Climate Change Commission. It's proposed that farmers start paying levies on emissions from 2025. The price will be set by Cabinet based on advice from the Climate Change Commission and some input from the sector

Christopher Luxon has announced the Public Service Commission will launch an independent inquiry into Te Pāti Māori. TPM is facing mounting investigations into whether it has misused Census data and information collected from people who had COVID-19 vaccinations for electioneering. Minister for Resources Shane Jones has confirmed that the Government will introduce a bill later this year to reverse the previous government's ban on oil and gas exploration in 2018. Jones also refused to confirm the Govt was still going to double renewable energy generation leading to cries of yet another broken promise A Corrections fund to help former prisoners remove gang-related hand and face tattoos is almost depleted. The $100,000 allocated for the programme was supposed to last three years, but it's been so popular that just $27,000 is left. Māori health leaders are calling on the government to scrap the Treaty Principles Bill, saying equitable healthcare is "a fundamental right". The Royal Australasian College of Physicians' (RACP) Māori Health Committee chair Dr Matt Wheeler said the principles outlined in the bill diminished "the constitutional status of the Treaty / Te Tiriti". "This bill undermines the state's responsibility to collaborate with Māori, rendering the Treaty and its obligations meaningless," he said. The latest 'trust in media' survey is out by the folks at the Journalism, Media and Democracy Research Centre which shows, among other findings, that in 2023, general trust in news declined from 45% to 42%, continuing a downward trend that was already evident in 2020 when the survey was first conducted. However, in 2023, the trust in news people consume themselves increased from 52% to 53%.
