'Tis the season to be... jolly? In the spirit of our complicated feeling about Yuletide 2020, we're kicking off this year's Festive mini-season in a slightly darker mood than usual. Enter cult seventies slasher Black Christmas... 25 Jan 2019 | E.T. The Extra Terrestrial - LIVE! (feat. Kenrick & Miller) | 01:32:48
We did it! To celebrate our 100th(!) episode of Beyond The Box Set, we decided to take a bold step into the Podcasting big leagues by hosting our very first live episode! Obviously a major moment requires a major movie choice, so in front of a specially invited audience at our favourite pub, The Chemic Tavern in Leeds, we decided to pitch some sequel ideas for the Steven Spielberg classic E.T. The Extra Terrestrial. Tune in to hear us thoroughly dissect some of the movie's most iconic scenes - with a little help from guest comics Kenrick & Miller - before attempting our most ambitious, creative and possibly nonsensical sequel pitch ever! Huge thanks to everyone who turned up on the night, and everyone who listens to this episode! It's kind of a big deal for us and while it may be a little chaotic, it's truly a labour of love! Here's to the next 100... ----- Every week at Beyond The Box Set, we put the spotlight on a classic standalone movie and compete to pitch the most ridiculous prequels, sequels and spin-offs to bring them back to the big screen. How do you solve a problem like following up your first ever live episode? By taking on one of the most beloved movies of all time, of course! This week's episode 101 spectacular is dedicated to the iconic family favourite 'The Sound of Music', starring the legendary Dame Julie Andrews. Tune in to hear our thoughts on Maria Von Trapp's compulsive singing problem, impressive curtain-based design skills and how Harry's Granny may have been responsible for this movie's record-breaking box office takings back in the 60s... As ever, we're also pitching some long overdue sequel ideas - including a very unexpected origin story, a crossover that keeps the hills but loses the music, and some dramatic speculation about Dame Julie's adventures in the swinging sixties. ----- Beyond The Box Set is a weekly movie podcast that attempts to pitch sequels, prequels and spin offs to classic standalone movies. For over 100 episodes, we've pried open every closed narrative, slaughtered every cinematic sacred cow and pitched ideas ranging from the inspired to the downright un-filmable. 08 Feb 2019 | Battleship 2: Guess Who? | 01:20:59
B12 - You sunk my battleship! To kick off our new 'movies based on games' mini-season, podcasting legend Phil Better joins us to discuss the frankly ludicrous 2012 Hasbro cash-in 'Battleship' - starring Taylor Kitsch, Brooklyn Decker and Rihanna in a concept so thin it barely covered a single movie, let alone a potential franchise... Nevertheless, we're not ones to shy away from a challenge, so after we've finished dissecting the horrible dialogue, dreadful pacing and the unnerving sense that Battleship is less a movie than a 130 minute propaganda piece for the US Navy, we go all in on some sequel ideas - most of which involve extending the Hasbro cinematic universe to ever more ludicrous ends... ----- Beyond The Box Set is a podcast dedicated to pitching sequels, prequels and spin-offs to classic standalone movies. From E.T. to Titanic and everything in between, for over two years and 100+ episodes, we've dedicated our lives to milking cash cows even the most hardened studio exec wouldn't dare touch... 15 Feb 2019 | Need For Speed 2: Hot Wheels Edition | 01:32:12
A high octane racing thriller based on a popular video game franchise, Need For Speed should have been in pole position for a box office victory lap, but ultimately even the acting talents of Aaron Paul could get it across the finish line... On this week's episode of Beyond The Box Set, we discuss the questionable morality of street racing, Michael Keaton's literally phoned-in cameo appearance and debate whether Rami Malek's horrible supporting turn in this film made us re-evaluate how much we really want him to win an Oscar for Bohemian Rhapsody... As usual, we also conclude with our own sequel pitches for this movie - including an Oscar baiting legal drama and a prequel that fills in the surprisingly detailed back story built into the original. All this plus drinking games, listener submissions and more! ----- Each week on Beyond The Box Set, we take a classic - or questionably classic - standalone movie and compete to pitch the best, weirdest and most ridiculous sequel, prequel and spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. 21 Feb 2019 | Truth or Dare 2: Double Dare | 01:27:30
What if a classic college game based around uncomfortable revelations and sexy funtimes... turned deadly? That's the premise of the wholly unoriginal but kinda fun teen horror Truth or Dare, which we actually wound up enjoying a whole lot more than we should probably admit. Released in 2018, Truth or Dare mixes a little bit of Final Destination with a liberal dose of It Follows, as a group of one dimensional college students accidentally fall prey to a sinister demon during a Spring Break bender in Mexico. Critics gave the film a hard pass with a mere 15% on Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences were a little kinder, and the movie wound up grossing a healthy $95 million at the Box Office. This presumably means a sequel is all but inevitable - and we thought we'd get ahead of the curve with ideas for how to continue the story, featuring double the dares, twice the terror and a whole new cast of interchangeable teen stereotypes played by actors in their mid to late 30s... ----- Each week on Beyond The Box Set, we take a classic - or questionably classic - standalone movie and compete to pitch the best, weirdest and most ridiculous sequel, prequel and spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. We've been featured in The Guardian, on the front page of Apple Podcasts and as a Podbean 'Podcast of the Week', so we shouldn't have to dare you to check us out... but we will if we have to. 28 Feb 2019 | Clue 2: Into The Hasbro-Verse | 01:32:09
Was it Mr Green in the Hall with the Revolver? Or perhaps Mrs Peacock in the Billiard room with the Lead Pipe? All the cards are on the table this week, as we conclude our 'movies based on games' mini-series with an episode dedicated to the classic murder mystery farce 'Clue'. Friend of the show Julio Olivera from The Contrarians Podcast joins us this week as we compare notes on convoluted plotting, scenery-chewing character actors, Yvette's ridiculous cleavage and much more... Inspired by the forthcoming reboot starring - sigh - Ryan Reynolds, we also pitch our own sequel ideas for this classic board game adaptation, featuring re-castings and plot twists galore! ----- Each week on Beyond The Box Set, we take a classic standalone movie and compete to pitch the best, weirdest and most ridiculous sequel, prequel and spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. This time last year, The Shape of Water was crowned Best Picture at the 90th Academy Awards. Twelve months on, has the movie lost any of its lustre? As we bid adieu to another year of Oscar-watching, we decided to revisit Guillermo del Toro's fantastical passion project in our own unique way. Which of course means only one thing - sequels! From an underwater origin story to an Arrival-inspired sci-fi romance, check out our ideas in this week's podcast - in which we also discuss the benefits of practical effects when depicting inter-species romance, enjoy the cartoonish villainy of Michael Shannon, mourn the tragic death of Pandora the cat and much more... ----- Beyond The Box Set is a British movie podcast dedicated to creatively celebrating classic standalone movies... before desecrating them completely. 16 Mar 2019 | The Dressmaker 2: The Hemsworth Curse | 01:05:18
We're back, you bastards! This week's episode may be arriving slightly late, but we hope the choice of movie justifies the wait. The Dressmaker is a real curio - a hilarious Australian revenge comedy/drama starring Kate Winslet, Liam Hemsworth and a lot of hats, wigs and fabulous evening gowns! If you've never seen this movie before, we strongly recommend that you seek it out before listening to this episode - it's an absolute riot, and some of the plot twists are so out-there that we'd hate to ruin them for you! But do make sure you come back, because we have a *lot* to talk about... ------ Beyond The Box Set is a movie podcast with a difference. 22 Mar 2019 | The Martian 2: Life On Mars? | 01:20:03
Like most moviegoers, the last couple of years have kind of soured us on the screen talents of Matt Damon. Movies like Downsizing and Suburbicon haven't exactly made the best use of his talents, to put it mildly. So revisiting The Martian was a timely reminder that he can actually be pretty damn charming when he's actually given decent material to work with. Directed by Ridley Scott, The Martian stars Damon as Mark Watney, a dry-witted space botanist accidentally stranded on Mars during a mission. While awaiting rescue he's forced to face off against exploding potatoes, a diminishing food supply and a lot of disco music. It's a lot of fun, which is a pleasant surprise for a modern Sci-fi movie. Join us as we discuss key plot points such as Sean Bean's complete lack of accent effort, Jessica Chastain's questionable leadership skills and what the hell Kristen Wiig is doing in this movie. As usual, we also attempt to come up with some plausible sequel ideas to send this movie back into orbit. ----- Every week on Beyond The Box Set, hosts Harry and John take a look at a classic standalone movie, and then compete to pitch the most ridiculous sequel, prequel and spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. It's all the fun of a grim Hollywood board meeting, with more booze and sarcasm. 29 Mar 2019 | John Carter Must Die (feat. Fake Nerd Podcast) | 01:39:01
John Carter of Earth? John Carter of Mars? Frankly, as far as we're concerned this unholy mess of a movie should have been called John Carter and the completely incomprehensible plot. Directed by Pixar legend Andrew Stanton and starring Battleship himbo Taylor Kitsch, the long gestating big screen adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' highly influential adventure novel was a disastrous box office bomb on release in 2012 - although it has since developed a small but vocal band of defenders. One of those defenders is Brandon T McClure of the Fake Nerd Podcast, who gamely joins us this week to explain his love for this movie and attempt to unpick the seriously overstuffed plot for our benefit. He also sticks around for the usual drinking games and, of course, our attempts at pitching a workable sequel - although given the financials, we wouldn't hold our breath for any of them getting green lit by a studio. Not on this planet, anyway... ----- Beyond The Box Set is a successful movie podcast in which two intrepid hosts journey through the history of classic standalone cinema - then proceed to take a wrecking ball to each and every one of them with some truly ludicrous sequel pitches to bring them back to the big screen. Directed by David Fincher from the short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a fascinating concept with a fundamentally boring character at the centre. Join us on this week's podcast as we discuss extremely variable CGI work, the intense ick-factor of the old man/little girl love story and why Tilda Swinton gave us a very British case of second-hand tea anxiety... We also have a go at pitching some sequel ideas, including some thoughts on how other notable directors might have handled this story, and a crossover with one of our favourite camp classics from a past episode... ----- Beyond The Box Set is a movie podcast with a twist. Each week, we take a classic standalone movie and compete to pitch the most ridiculous sequels, prequels and spin-offs to bring them back to the big screen. 12 Apr 2019 | Fatal Attraction 2: Bitches Be Crazy | 01:23:54
Having recently discovered that Harry has only ever seen two Glenn Close movies in his life - one of which being Guardians of the Galaxy - we decided to dedicate a season to the iconic 7-time Oscar non-winner. First up, the terrifying 80s erotic thriller Fatal Attraction... In this movie, Glenn stars as Alex Forrest, a successful career woman who reacts rather poorly to being discarded by married sleaze-ball Michael Douglas after a one night stand. It starts as a compelling examination of mental illness and ends as a fairly silly thriller, but Glenn's performance is one for the ages, and the movie was a genre-defining smash on release. Tune in to hear our thoughts on dishwater sex (we're against it), the terrible mistreatment of poor Quincey the dog in this movie, and why Michael Douglas deserved pretty much everything he got... Oh yeah and sequel pitches, drinking games, etc. You know the drill. ----- Beyond The Box Set is a movie podcast with a twist. 18 Apr 2019 | Dangerous Liaisons: Children of the Revolution | 01:30:25
Our Glenn Close mini-season - which we're now dubbing 'Close Encounters of the Glenn Kind' - continues with an episode dedicated to Dangerous Liaisons, in which the actress gives one of her most memorably villainous performances as the scheming aristocrat Marquise Isabelle de Merteuil. Directed by Stephen Frears and co-starring John Malkovich, Michelle Pfeiffer and Uma Thurman, Dangerous Liaisons has it all - intrigue, seduction and many, many wigs. In other words, it should be a perfect Beyond The Box Set movie. Unfortunately, one of us didn't quite end up seeing things that way... Tune into this week's episode to hear our thoughts on bedtime wigs, a classic distracting Keanu Reeves performance, the film's surprisingly abrupt ending and much more, plus drinking games and of course, our sequel pitches. ----- Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we take a look back at a classic standalone movie, and compete to pitch the most ridiculous sequels, prequels and spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. 25 Apr 2019 | Mars Attacks 2: Cat Women From Venus! | 01:04:40
After our Dangerous Liaisons disaster last week, we clearly needed a change of pace to keep this Glenn Close mini-series on the rails. Enter Mars Attacks! - Tim Burton's campy love letter to 50s B-movies, and a very different role for our current featured actress. Mars Attacks! unites an impressive ensemble of 90s A-listers who prove more than willing to embrace the silliness - from Jack Nicholson as an opportunistic US President to Sarah Jessica Parker as a ditzy journalist who undergoes a startling canine transformation. The real stars of the show are Burton's Martians, though. Delightfully vindictive and with no obvious motive beyond causing chaos and destruction, these little green monsters are movie villains for the ages - which makes it a shame that this movie turned out to be a one off. Could our sequel pitches inspire a long overdue revival? One thing's for sure, it couldn't be any worse than Burton's recent Dumbo remake... ----- Each week on Beyond The Box Set, we feature a classic standalone movie and compete to pitch the most ridiculous sequels, prequels and spin-off ideas we can think of to bring them back to the big screen. Be honest, who wouldn't vote for Harrison Ford as President? On the basis of Air Force One, his policies might be a little... problematic, but he's reliably charming, calm under pressure and he can really nail a trailer line. Real presidents have been elected for much, much less... Dubbed 'Die Hard on a Plane' by critics, Air Force One is dated, dumb and hugely entertaining. 09 May 2019 | The Devil Wears Prada 2: Revenge Wears Prada | 01:03:14
As an icy fashion queen who definitely isn't Anna Wintour, Meryl Streep delivers one of the most iconic performances of her career in The Devil Wears Prada. But could she ever be convinced to revisit the role? Adapted from the bestselling novel by Lauren Weisberger, The Devil Wears Prada stars Anne Hathaway as an aspiring journalist who gets a crash course in the fashion industry while working as an assistant for fearsome magazine editor Miranda Priestley (Streep). The film was a surprise smash hit on release in 2003, grossing over $300 million worldwide and helping to introduce Streep to a new generation of moviegoers. 30 May 2019 | Tropic Thunder 2: Welcome Back To The Jungle | 01:15:14
Featuring ludicrously OTT gore, Ben Stiller going full r-word and Robert Downey Jr. improbably turning a black face performance into Oscar gold, Tropic Thunder is a Hollywood satire that made us laugh and squirm in equal measure. Poking fun at the egos and eccentricities of A-list movie stars and powerful studio heads, Tropic Thunder follows a dysfunctional cadre of actors - including a faded action star, an Oscar darling who's a little too committed to the method and a drug-addled gross-out icon - as their attempts to complete production of a high budget war movie in the jungles of Vietnam go horribly off the rails.
The movie cleaned up at the box office and won almost unanimously positive reviews, but not without attracting a level of controversy that might make it a much tougher sell in 2019. In this week's episode, we discuss the thin line between outrageous and offensive, the glorious shade this movie throws towards Eddie Murphy and Russell Crowe, and that unforgettable Tom Cruise cameo... After that, it's time to pitch our own fantasy sequel ideas, including a movie within a movie within a movie, Tropic Thunder in Space - which is pretty much just Galaxy Quest - and a much-needed effort to redress the notable gender imbalance in the original film. ----- Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we take a look back at a one-off movie from the past, and compete to pitch sequel, prequel or spin-off ideas that might bring them back to the big screen. 07 Jun 2019 | Geostorm 2: Dutch Oven | 01:11:34
Gerard Butler and his distractingly thick neck race to save the world from ecological disaster in Geostorm, an instant ironic classic from the screenwriting team behind Independence Day. Featuring bad science, clunky dialogue and plot holes the size of the ozone layer, this 2017 bomb was a must for inclusion in our summer of Disaster Movies. Join us as we discuss misplaced nationalism, inexplicable timelines, women in bikinis running from frozen tidal waves and the best-worst product placement we've ever seen in a semi-serious movie. On its much-delayed release in 2017, Geostorm received scathing reviews and tanked hard at the box office, so sadly a sequel is unlikely to ever see the light of day. 14 Jun 2019 | Knowing 2: All Knowing | 01:10:13
Somehow, Beyond the Box Set has managed to exist for two whole years without us ever diving into the filmography of the iconic human meme machine that is Nicholas Cage. Fortunately our current disaster movie mini-season offers plentiful opportunities to correct this oversight, so this week - on Harry's suggestion - we're discussing the suspiciously religious-feeling 2009 apocalypse epic Knowing. Despite garnering dreadful reviews (and deservedly so) this film topped out at over $200 million at the global box office. It stars Cage as a celebrated scientist turned day drinking - and inexplicably night barbecuing - widower who stumbles upon what he believes to be the formula for predicting the end of the world. Rose Byrne and Ben Mendhelson are also in it, but you could be forgiven for not noticing... Tune into this week's podcast to hear our thoughts on whispering Cage vs screaming Cage, the questionable taste levels of appropriating 9/11 for a schlocky Sci-fi conspiracy theory and why shoplifting Blu-rays may be the ultimate in mid-00s petty crime... Tune into this week's episode to hear our thoughts on the awesomely Presidential Morgan Freeman, a badly miscast Tea Leoni and her inexplicably Austrian father, strangely neglectful parenting and Elijah Wood finding a novel way of forcing his high school crush to marry him. For the second time this month, our disaster movie season lands on the bizarre latter-day career choices of Nicholas Cage. Based on a bestselling Christian book series, 2014's Left Behind is a low-budget, shoddily made train wreck that not even Jesus could save from box office oblivion. With the help of our special guest Chris Scott from the Ask Karen podcast, we spend this week's episode discussing important spiritual matters such as Nicholas Cage's alarming headpiece, the suspiciously porn star-sounding character names, dwarf kicking, air hostess slut shaming and much more. Along the way we also have the usual collection of drinking games - and trust us, you'll need it for this one - listener submissions and of course, sequel pitches! 02 Aug 2019 | Welcome To Marwen 2: Beyond The Valley of the Dolls | 01:03:06
A new movie from Forrest Gump director Robert Zemeckis is generally a buzz-worthy event, but Welcome To Marwen alienated critics and died a swift death at the box office when released earlier this year. Starring Steve Carrell as a traumatised man living out his fantasies via a meticulously constructed model town populated by kick-ass female soldiers based on his real-world friends and colleagues, Welcome To Marwen is easily one of the oddest movies we've ever discussed on this podcast. 08 Aug 2019 | Stand By Me 2: The Sign | 01:08:30
Our Stephen King mini-season kicks off this week with a quintessential coming of age classic, Rob Reiner's heartstring-tugging boys adventure tale Stand By Me. Adapted from King's short story The Body, Stand By Me stars a lineup of child stars - all of whose lives and careers eerily echoed their fates in the movie. In this week's podcast we discuss misleading titles, traumatic leech incidents, Keifer Sutherland perfecting the peroxide 80s asshole look and much more. With the surviving actors now in their mid-late forties, is there any mileage in a middle aged Stand By Me sequel? That's the task we set ourselves this week as we pitch concepts to bring this iconic movie back to the big screen. Let's face it, most of these actors would probably be glad of the work... ----- Beyond The Box Set is a movie podcast with a twist. Each week we take a look at a classic standalone movie and compete to pitch fantasy sequel, prequel or spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. When it comes to 90s Blockbusters, they don't come much bigger - or dumber - than Michael Bay's Armageddon, a bloated disaster epic with a relationship to science and characterisation which could best be described as 'loose'. In this week's episode, we try to find some good in this much maligned movie, while also pitching some sequels to bring this cash cow back to the big screen - with or without Bruce Willis and his distracting frosted tips... ----- Beyond the Box Set is a movie podcast with a twist. Is Netflix the new spiritual home of trash-tactic B-movies? We could be OK with that if they reach the glorious heights of insanity achieved by The Perfection. Little Miss Sunshine was a true word-of-mouth sensation back in 2006, winning two Oscars and making a strong case for the introduction of a 'Best Performance by an Ensemble' category. The film stars Abigail Breslin as an adorable 8-year old whose dreams of winning the Little Miss Sunshine beauty pageant take her on the road trip of a lifetime with her seriously dysfunctional family. In the second instalment of our special Halloween mini-series, Harry and John enjoy some prime Bette Midler scenery chewing in the all-time seasonal classic that is Hocus Pocus. Released in 1993, Hocus Pocus starred Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker as the Sanderson Sisters - a trio of legendary witches who return to their home town of Salem with a vengeance after a troubled teen unwittingly brings them back from the dead. A critical and commercial disappointment on release, the movie is now justly regarded as a riotously entertaining seasonal classic. Join us as we discuss virgin shaming, fabulous musical numbers and the boldness of opening a children's movie with an infanticide scene. 26 Oct 2017 | The Witches 2: Mousetrap | 01:10:26
In the final instalment of our Halloween mini-season, Harry and John are joined by the velvet-voiced Paul Kelly to pitch sequels for Nicolas Roeg's genuinely terrifying adaptation of Roald Dahl's The Witches. Join us as we reminisce about the many, many ways this movie traumatised us as children - including gaslighting grandmas, Anjelica Huston's facial genitalia, truly horrifying special effects work and much more. Once we've thoroughly relived our childhood nightmares, we also set about creating some brand new ones with our characteristically offbeat sequel suggestions for this classic alleged family film. This week's ideas include an Alien crossover, a John Wick-style neo noir following former rodent Luke's ongoing vendetta against the dark forces, and a sitcom inspired by the clearly terrible customer service on display at Rowan Atkinson's Hotel Excelsior... ----- In every episode of Beyond The Box Set, we revisit a classic standalone movie and compete to pitch ridiculous sequel, prequel and spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. 02 Nov 2017 | The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen | 01:08:26
Was the public really crying out for an Allan Quatermain movie in 2003? If so, they probably weren't banking on the incoherent mess that is The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, a notorious box office bomb that effectively ended the careers of director Stephen Norrington and star Sean Connery. This week on Beyond The Box Set, following a request from our pals at the Blokebusters podcast, we revisited The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and tried to figure out how a decent premise ended up going so very, very wrong. Join us as we attempt to piece together the truly incomprehensible plot of this movie, before imagining what might have been with some course-correcting sequel and reboot ideas. Along the way we also discuss terrible dialogue, Sean Connery's complete lack of effort, heavy-handed literary allusions and much more... If you're planning to reappraise this movie at some point in the future, we strongly recommend having a drink or three to hand. Fortunately we've also got you covered this episode with some The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen drinking games to ensure your critical functions are nice and dulled by the time the seventh consecutive pointless character introduction rolls around... --------- Each week on Beyond The Box Set, we take a classic - or questionably classic - standalone movie and compete to pitch the most ridiculous sequel, prequel and spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. 10 Nov 2017 | Withnail and I 2: Coming Back In Here | 01:08:36
It's a family affair on Beyond The Box Set this week, as Harry's brother Sam Chappell pops by to pitch sequels for one of the funniest, saddest and most depraved British movies ever made - Withnail and I, starring Richard E. Grant and Paul McGann. Released in 1987, Bruce Robinson's semi-autobiographical black comedy was a low-budget independent movie that became one of the most widely quoted cult classics of the era. Join us as we discuss Camberwell Carrots, questionable cooking, John's extremely in-depth theory about Marwood's latent homosexuality and the classic line from this movie that has haunted us for years... Discussing drinking games for this film seem almost moot given it practically invented the concept, but in lieu of downing lighter fluid, we came up with some slightly less lethal alternatives. We also discussed some sequel ideas including an alcohol-fuelled origin story, a bittersweet reunion in the late 90s, and a possibly un-filmable psychological study into the intense co-dependence of the two lead characters. --------- Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we watch a classic standalone movie and compete to pitch the most ridiculous sequel, prequel and spin-off ideas we can think of to bring them back to the big screen. We haven't managed to get anything green-lit by the studios yet, but we're pretty sure it's only a matter of time. Following the breakout success of Hereditary, writer-director Ari Aster proved he was no one-hit wonder with the deliciously weird Midsommar. By turns haunting and darkly hilarious, the film depicts possibly the most toxic breakup ever committed to screen, as Florence Pugh and Jack Raynor take an ill-fated trip to a remote Swedish commune where the sun never sets. It's time to say goodbye to the hell year that was 2020 - but before we go, we're taking one final look back at the films we watched this year. Cinemas may have closed, but we still managed to seek out a fair few new releases this year, from the Oscar class of 2019 to the increasingly ambitious efforts from Netflix, Disney+ and other dominant streaming platforms. Tune in to hear out thoughts on everything we saw together, and apart, over the past twelve months. As always, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for staying with us - we look forward to another year of classic movies and ill-advised sequels in 2021. See you on the other side!

23 Nov 2017 | The Shining 2: Ghost Hotel | 01:06:18
As an object lesson in terror, it's hard to beat Stanley Kubrick's 1980 hotel horror 'The Shining'. Starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall as a seriously dysfunctional married couple who choose the wrong hotel for a winter of intense one-on-one time, the movie was a tortured production that scored derisive reviews at the time, but has now been reappraised as a pinnacle of its genre. In this week's episode, John and Harry discuss red flag job interviews, debate the reasonable level of hysteria when confronted by an axe-wielding maniac, unpick the most inept rescue attempt ever committed to film and much more... This week's fantasy sequel ideas include a discussion on Stephen King's official followup - which is literally about a psychic cat - and our own, only slightly more out-there, reboot ideas including a Black Mirror-inspired reality remake and a comedy crossover with a controversial failed franchise movie... -----

30 Nov 2017 | It's A Wonderful Life 2: The Bailey Show | 01:05:20
This week on Beyond The Box Set, John and Harry kick off their festive season by pitching modern-day sequels for the most heartwarming holiday classic ever made - Frank Capra's It's a Wonderful Life. Join us as we discuss George Bailey's fragile mental health, the questionable business ethics of Baily Brothers Building & Loans and why there's something about Mary that we just don't trust... We're also joined by our first ever returning guest Ross Burton, who helps us to pitch sequel ideas including a Christopher Nolan-style retelling of Harry Bailey's wartime adventures, a remake populated entirely by The Muppets and a bleak dystopian thriller that exposes the real reason George was never able to leave Bedford falls... Released in 1946, It's a Wonderful Life stars Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey, Donna Reed as Mary, Lionel Barrymore as the evil Mr Potter and Gloria Grahame as Violet. Like all classic movies, it was only modestly received on release, but soon built up a reputation of one of the most beloved films of the era. Both Stewart and Reed would cite it as the high point of their Hollywood careers. ------ Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we revisit a classic standalone movie and compete to pitch sequels, prequels and spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. Our Will Smith summer has seen the likable A-lister dipping his toes into a number of genres, from action to comic book to post-apocalyptic sci-fi. In Focus, we find him in Soderbergh territory, leading a stylish crime thriller of the kind usually reserved for the likes of George Clooney. It's a good fit for someone with Smith's charisma, and although the script isn't nearly as clever as it thinks it is, it's one of the better films we've watched this season. 08 Dec 2017 | Krampus 2: The Satan Clause | 00:59:41
A horror-comedy about a Bavarian Christmas demon who feasts on the flesh of naughty children? Starring Adam Scott, Toni Collette and a gun-toting Conchata Ferrell? On paper Krampus sounds like our kind of holiday movie... but a messy script and a lot of uncomfortable tonal shifts left us feeling a little disappointed. That said, there was enough visual invention and dark humour in Michael Dougherty's 2015 take on this twisted European folk tale to give us plenty to talk about in this episode. Join us as we discuss ambiguously Austrian grannies, psychotic gingerbread men and the right way to incorporate baby-eating into a family comedy... As always, we also brainstorm a few drinking games - including neglectful parenting, inappropriate reactions and instances of 'Adam Scott face' - before coming up with some fantasy sequel ideas. Would a twisted take on Tim Allen's The Santa Clause or an action-packed Stranger Things crossover help this franchise to achieve a more comfortable balance of horror and comedy? We actually think they might... -------- Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we review a classic standalone movie, before competing to pitch fantasy sequel, prequel or remake ideas to bring them back to the big screen. 14 Dec 2017 | Love Actually 2: Love, Definitely? | 01:10:45
Is Love Actually a heartwarming festive classic, or the sexist, fat-shaming cinematic equivalent of finding a lump of coal in your stocking? This week on Beyond The Box Set, we revisited Harry's all-time favourite Christmas movie, and found that our reactions to it diverted rather sharply, actually... From Hugh Grant's Prime Minister getting the hots for his chubby(?) secretary to Colin Firth's recently dumped writer forming a hasty bond with a woman he's never had a coherent conversation with, Richard Curtis' smash hit ensemble comedy posits that love can blossom in all sorts of unusual places. Well, for straight white men, anyway... Join us as we debate whether there's any hope for Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman's failing marriage, discuss why Andrew Lincoln will probably end up murdering Kiera Knightley and wearing her skin as a sarong, and argue that Martin Freeman and Joanna Page's dry-humping body doubles may actually have the healthiest relationship in the whole movie... We also pitch some drinking games for the movie - because by God, you'll need them - and come up with our own fantasy sequels, one of which is considerably more optimistic than the other... ------- Each week on Beyond The Box Set, we choose a notable standalone movie and compete to pitch the most ridiculous sequel, prequel or spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. 21 Dec 2017 | Jingle All The Way 2: Jingle Bell Rock (Feat. One Good Thing) | 01:14:31
Podcast crossover! In the fourth and final instalment of our 2017 festive mini-season, Paul and Paul from One Good Thing join us to discuss Arnold Schwarzenegger's utterly shameless Christmas cash-in 'Jingle All The Way'. Released in 1996, Jingle All The Way tells the heartwarming tale of a workaholic father attempting to compensate for a year's worth of neglect by buying his son a highly coveted 'Turbo Man' action figure for Christmas. Critics described the movie as 'crass' 'cynical' and 'painfully unfunny' - and those were some of the kinder reviews - but it made money at the box office and endures as a questionable Christmas classic to this day. Tune in as we discuss Schwarzenegger's nonexistant comic timing, Jake Lloyd's inexplicable journey from this to 'Star Wars', why Sinbad's character is clearly in the midst of a serious psychotic episode and the mysterious phenomenon that is Phil Hartman - suburban sex God. We also engage in our first ever 'pod-off' - pitching our joint 'Jingle All The Way' sequel concept against the boys from One Good Thing. Can either team improve on the original movie - or even the real straight-to-DVD sequel starring Larry The Cable Guy that we chose to pretend doesn't exist? It's a lower bar than usual... ------- Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we watch a classic standalone movie and compete to pitch the most ridiculous sequel, prequel or spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. 04 Jan 2018 | WALL-E 2: A Garbage Movie | 00:53:55
In almost a year of recording Beyond The Box Set, it occured to us this week that we've never actually covered a fully animated movie. So in the spirit of the new year, we decided to correct this oversight and turn our imaginations towards one of the most beloved animated features of the past decade, Pixar's WALL-E. Written and directed by Andrew Stanton and Jim Reardon, WALL-E was one of Pixar Studios riskiest and most ambitious releases. Set in the wasted remnants of a long-abandoned Planet Earth, the movie follows a largely non-verbal trash compactor robot who dreams of experiencing true love - or at least the version of it depicted in his worn-out VHS of the 1969 musical Hello Dolly. From its virtually dialogue-free first half to the depiction of a future in which humans have quite literally become oversized babies, WALL-E challenges its audience considerably more than the average children's movie. It was a gamble that paid off when the movie became a highly acclaimed global blockbuster, taking in over $200 million at the US Box Office and picking up the 2008 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Despite all this success, to date WALL-E has never been recomissioned for a sequel. Join us as we attempt to recitify this with a haunting end-of-humanity origin story and a romantic sequel that finds WALL-E and EVE's teenage child experiencing the first pangs of robot love during the Earth cleanup process. Along the way we also discuss whether WALL-E should really be considered a children's movie, question the necessity of sentient parasols in the future and learn the hard way that 'cockroach life span' is a difficult phrase to say... ------ Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we watch a classic standalone movie and compete to pitch the most ridiculous sequel, prequel or spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. We were recently featured by Apple iTunes as a 'Binge-Worthy Podcast', which was a very validating start to 2018. If you like the show, please hit subscribe on your preferred podcasting platform to hear a new episode every Friday. 11 Jan 2018 | Being John Malkovich II: The Split | 01:17:09
After four long weeks apart, Harry and John finally reunite for a dizzyingly hilarious trip down the rabbit hole that is Spike Jonze and Charlie Kaufman's brilliantly inventive Being John Malkovich, one of the most creative cult comedies of the 1990s. Starring John Cusack as a frustrated puppeteer, Cameron Diaz as his sexually conflicted, animal-hoarding wife and John Malkovich in a career defining performance as himself - or some version of it - Being John Malkovich is rightly regarded as a modern classic. Join us as we discuss the wig that transforms John Cusack into Dylan Moran, Catherine Keener's stellar leg work in this movie, why Being Tom Cruise would never have worked and much more, before setting ourselves the daunting task of matching this movie's endless insanity with our own fantasy sequel pitches. ---- Beyond The Box Set is the hit movie podcast in which classic standalone movies are subjected to bizarre and frequently unfilmable sequel, prequel and spin-off ideas in hopes of bringing them back to the big screen. 19 Jan 2018 | Kiss Kiss Bang Bang 2: Ding Dong & Dynamite (feat. Easy Riders Raging Podcast) | 01:09:30
It's the whip-smart cult comedy that revived Robert Downey Jr.'s career and rescued us from the prospect of Johnny Knoxville headlining the Iron Man Franchise. Shane Black's Kiss Kiss Bang Bang combines classic Neo Noir references with a distinctly 21st century sensibility, making it just the kind of curious genre-crossover we love to sink our teeth into... With the invaluable assistance of our special guest Chris Johnston of Easy Riders Raging Podcast, we attempt to wrap our heads around the insanely convoluted plot of this movie, debate whether it's OK to shamelessly objectify your female lead if you make a point of being self aware about it and question just what exactly the root cause might be of Val Kilmer's increasingly alarming facial dimensions... Naturally we also get down to some sequel ideas, which this week include a Rush Hour-inspired location switch, a deconstruction of the original movie's obsession with gay panic jokes and a lot of really terrible plays on the title. Kiss Kiss Cillit Bang, anyone? ------ Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we take a classic standalone movie and compete to pitch the most ridiculous sequel, prequel and spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. We've covered everything from timeless blockbusters to beloved cult classics, and quite possibly ruined them all with our sacreligious and frequently unfilmable reboot concepts. 26 Jan 2018 | Black Swan 2: Urban Redemption | 01:31:54
Natalie Portman's high-intensity acting style found the perfect vehicle in Darren Aronofsky's nightmarish ballet-themed body horror Black Swan, a role that deservedly won her the Academy Award for Best Actress. But what might happen if the two reunited for a second act? Olumide Ajulo joins us in this week's episode to discuss Portman's journey to the dark side, the unintentional camp value of the swan transformation scenes and the joy of Winona Ryder being the most Winona she can be in a brief but full-tilt supporting turn as a faded Ballet queen in a suspiciously crooked wig... After burning through some drinking games - mostly concieved to provide a distraction from all the gross finger stuff in this film - we also pitch our own fantasy Black Swan sequels, including Winona's origin story, an uplifting redemption movie with a Pitch Perfect twist and an attempted comeback for Portman's Nina Sayers' that inevitably winds up taking a dark and twisted turn... ----- Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we explore a classic standalone movie from cinema past and compete to pitch the most ridiculous prequel, sequel and spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. 02 Feb 2018 | Forrest Gump II: Jenny's Side | 01:29:08
Episode 50 marks Beyond The Box Set's first full year on the air, so we knew we had to celebrate with a truly iconic movie choice. So sit down and join us as we pitch sequels to the tearjerking 90s classic Forrest Gump, aka Harry's all-time favourite movie. In this episode we compare notes on how long each of us lasted before welling up, reveal the historical crossover scene that was wisely left on the cutting room floor, and debate whether Jenny Curran is the most unfairly maligned cinema character of the past thirty years... We also bring you a bumper selection of drinking games, including needlessly shirtless Lieutenant Dan, every time Jenny's wigs signify a time jump and the occasional hints of Mama Gump's dark side... Over twenty years after Tom Hanks hung up his running shoes and put little Haley Joel Osment onto the bus, it seems increasingly unlikely that a real Forrest Gump sequel will ever come to pass. Not that we let that spoil our fun as we dedicate the second half of this episode to pitching ridiculous follow-up ideas, including Colin Hanks as a young Forrest undertaking an improbable journey through the plot lines of some of Tom Hanks most famous films - trust us, there was enough to go on... Finally, we also marked our one-year anniversary by finally launching our own dedicated Patreon and Merchendise pages. 09 Feb 2018 | *batteries not included 2: Attack of the Drones | 01:11:19
What's your favourite children's movie about impoverished elderly people living with dementia? This week on Beyond The Box Set, we're joined by the talented Phil Hepworth to discuss *batteries not included, a quirky family sci-fi that features some surprisingly adult and melancholy themes. Released in 1987, *batteries not included stars Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy as Frank and Faye Riley, a married couple whose long-time home comes under threat from aggressive property developers who want to force them out. As Faye's apparent dementia continues to worsen, Frank prays for a miracle - and gets one in the form of a pair of apparently sentient miniature spaceships known as 'The Fix-Its'. The film's unusually thoughtful tone might be down to writer Brad Bird, who went on to write and produce a number of Pixar's biggest hits including Ratatouille and The Incredibles. A modest hit on release, the film has become a minor cult classic, winning a then-septuagenarian Tandy a Saturn award for Best Actress. Join us as we discuss the colourful cast of characters - including a slogan-quoting former boxer and a short-fused gang leader with highly unusual fashion sense even for an eighties movie - attempt to figure out what the aliens/robots/spaceships are actually supposed to be in this movie and of course, pitch some sequel ideas... ----- Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we take a classic standalone movie and compete to pitch the most ridiculous sequel, prequel or spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. Imagine the worst train journey you've ever taken. Now, throw in baby-eating, a post-apocalyptic caste system and a demented Tilda Swinton ranting about shoes in a broad Yorkshire accent. Welcome to Bong Joon-ho's quirky sci-fi action hit Snowpiercer. It's quite the ride... Released in 2013, Snowpiercer features an all-star cast including Chris Evans, Octavia Spencer, Tilda Swinton and John Hurt as the last remnants of humanity scrapping for survival aboard a high-speed train controlled by the mysterious and God-like 'Wilfred'. The film was acclaimed for its bold visual style and inventive action sequences. It is also completely insane. This week on Beyond The Box Set, we discuss cool but nonsensical fight scenes, Tilda Swinton's gloriously off-kilter acting choices and why it's weird to be grossed out by Cockroach bars when you've already chowed down on a baby... 22 Feb 2018 | Garden State 2: Pet Sematary | 01:13:54
Remember when everybody loved Garden State? Strange as it seems, Zach Braff's directorial debut was widely praised on release - so why has its reputation curdled so dramatically in recent years? Louise Ball joins us this week to discuss Manic Pixie Dream Girls, alarming animal cruelty and to help pitch the sequels that none of us actually want to see... Released in 2004 at the height of Zach Braff's Scrubs fame, Garden State was a slow-burn box office success, grossing over $35 million against a $2.5 million budget, bouyed by a Grammy-winning soundtrack and enthusiastic reviews. Despite this initial success, the movie later attracted criticism for its ponderous exploration of mid-twenties ennui and the characterisation of Natalie Portman's female romantic lead as less a recognisable human being than an infantilised collection of infuriatingly self-conscious quirks. Is Garden State totally without merit? We didn't quite think so. In this episode we discuss some of the reasons the movie was initially so successful - as well as the many elements that have aged poorly in the cold light of 2018. In pitching our own sequels, one of us attempts to inject some excitement by splicing the cast with a modern sci-fi phenomenon with an equally iconic soundtrack, one of us digs into the appalling animal cruelty hinted at in the original film, and one of us decides to ditch the insufferable central duo altogether and allow some of the movie's most memorable supporting characters to take centre stage... ----- Beyond The Box Set is a top ten TV & Film podcast officially rated 'Binge Worthy' by Apple Podcasts. A whimsical French comedy with some deceptively twisted themes, Jean-Pierre Jeunet's Amélie is a delightful ode to love, fate and the power of connection, bolstered by a star-making turn by Audrey Tautou. But do the film's visual invention and romantic tone mask something darker at the heart of the story? In our first Patreon crossover special, friend of the show Nathan Hunt - of our near namesake podcast Think Outside The Box Set - joins us to discuss how what with all the stalking, gaslighting and parental neglect on display, Amélie is basically a Roald Dahl story told with a Wes Anderson sensibility - in French. No wonder we loved it... Nathan also sticks around to help brainstorm some 2018-friendly sequels to the movie, including a timeline-jumping crossover with another classic of early 21st century European cinema and a spin-off inspired by a relatively obscure children's educational TV show. Time travel movies: they're awesome, but they never make sense. Rain Johnson's twisty sci-fi thriller Looper is no exception, but it sure is an entertaining ride. Released in 2012, Looper stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Joe - an assassin for hire in a futuristic world where illegal time travel is used by crime syndicates to cover up murders. The only catch is, at some point he's expected to bump off his future self. In this week's edition of Beyond The Box Set, we discuss gaping plot holes, the bizarre makeup techniques employed to make Joseph Gordon-Levitt resemble a younger version of Bruce Willis, and what this movie can teach us about Rian Johnson's subsequent approach to directing Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Once we've figured all that out, we turn to some sequel pitches - which this week include a Mad Max-inspired female-led action road movie with some major plot twists, and a complicated three-generation time travel pile-up with the most expensive cast this side of the Oceans 11 franchise... ----- Beyond The Box Set is the smash hit podcast that takes classic standalone movies and attempts to brainstorm sequel, prequel and spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen - no matter how convoluted or sacreligious. Join us in this week's episode as we discuss John's Sam Rockwell epiphany, Harry's unapologetic love for Star Trek: Nemesis and why the late, great Alan Rickman may have found the role of a lifetime in resentful thespian Alexander Dane / Doctor Lazarus. We also pitch some Galaxy Quest Drinking Games, including Tim Allen's Shatner-isms, unnecessary chest exposure and Sigourney Weaver reaction shots - followed by some sequel ideas that explore what a Galaxy Quest-style movie might look like at a time when Geek culture has taken over the world... ----- Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we take a classic standalone movie and compete to pitch ridiculous sequel, prequel and spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. 05 Apr 2018 | That Thing You Do (feat. The Contrarians) | 01:19:17
A sweet retro comedy about the rise and fall of fictional 60s pop band The Wonders, That Thing You Do! has virtually no stakes and gets by on the sheer good-natured charm of everyone involved, not least that of writer-director Tom Hanks. But can we sit through the 148 minute extended cut without succumbing to a severe case of toothache? In this month's Patreon special, friend of the show Julio Olivera of The Contrarians podcast joins us to discuss Tom Everett-Scott's spooky resemblance to Tom Hanks, the low-energy charm of Liv Tyler and why La La Land may in fact be a spiritual sequel to this movie... Released in 1996, That Thing You Do! was modestly successful at the box office, but spawned a successful soundtrack and quickly became a cult classic. In addition to Scott, Hanks and Tyler, the movie was an early showcase for then-rising stars including Steve Zahn, Charlize Theron and Giovanni Ribisi. In addition to comparing notes on the movie, we also come up with some drinking games - highly recommend if you do attempt the extended cut - and pitch our sequel ideas, which this week feature a bittersweet 21st century reunion and a journey through the history of Rock 'n' Roll, by way of Quantum Leap, Doctor Who and Love Actually. Mr Hanks, we're waiting for your call... ----- Beyond The Box Set is a hit movie podcast with a twist.
