Third year RVC student, Shiv Patil, was inspired to become a vet during his time riding horses and helping with dog rescue centres back home, in Bangalore. Advised to acquire the best veterinary education he could, he came to the UK with the intention of learning all he could. His plan is to take that knowledge back with him, to improve the lives of sports horses, working equids and rescued dogs in India. Recognising the value of education, he is intent of making veterinary education and CPD more accessible to vets in India, whilst improving access to veterinary care for the animals they care for.

Back in the Saddle is our new coaching programme specifically designed to support members who are seeking career support and are more than five years qualified.

In December's BEVApod Life Lucy Grieve chats with Brad Hill from Nottingham University. In this episode, Lucy and Brad discuss the ingredients for an equine vet graduate and how vets in practice can help bake that cake.

During his Presidency, Dave Rendle's objective was to tidy up the way we use anthelmintics and start to afford these essential medicines the protection they deserve. On forming the Anthelmintic Working Group, he invited Nic Steel was to be one of the first opinion practitioners to help the group create simple, practical and effective guidance on how vets at the coal face could take responsibility for their roles in the unfolding tragedy that is anthelmintic resistance. Nic talks us through the protectMEtoo toolkit and how it now provides every vet with access to the essential, evidence-based, digestible (you can read this stuff in the time it takes to drink a coffee!) information that they need to know to help their clients and save these medicines for the future.

Tim Barnett chats to neurology expert Professor Emeritus Joe Mayhew about his impressive career.

Gayle Capps discusses her experience as a coach on the BEVA Leg Up Scheme, and why coaching can be valuable to both coach and coachee.

Law graduate, Justine Couret, is currently halfway through a veterinary degree at Tartu University in Estonia. When the head of the university equine clinic, Felipe Corrêa, suggested she and three of her fellow students created an equine association for veterinary students, they took the bull by the horns and set up 'Hyraco'. Through this they hope to improve accessibility to equine careers for all students, from clinical placements to gaining experience within the various aspects of the wider equestrian industry. They believe that the equine field offers many  opportunities, which are often overlooked, and hope to work with BEVA and other equine associations to bring those to the forefront for all students.

Council members Gemma Dransfield and Sophie Eaden discuss a time when Gemma was finding equine practice particularly challenging. How can you recognise when you're struggling at work what can you do next? Gemma shares how she made equine practice work for her and some valuable advice for anyone who might be finding it difficult.

Tim Barnett chats to Deborah Baker about her life and career.

Whether it's handling dangerous drugs or working with unhandled yearlings, as veterinary surgeons we take calculated risks daily. After becoming pregnant with her first child, Emily identified a need for clear and concise guidance for veterinarians navigating pregnancy and parenting in clinical practice. After researching the information for herself, she decided to write a book to help new mothers make evidence based decisions about their work practices. Her book is called "Pregnancy and Postpartum Considerations for the Veterinary Team", and she now offers 'Ultimate Parenting Road Map' workshops in addition to one-to-one mentoring on the subject. Council Member, Angela Jones, joins us to discuss how planning ahead where possible, and having access to the relevant information helps ease the stresses and strains of trying to manage work-life and family-life during those early days in the process.

Connor Fettes, a third year mature student, has encountered first-hand the challenges students are facing trying to achieve their EMS goals. With pressure on all sides, equine practice is feeling the consequences of being squeezed out of the curriculum. By making equine EMS more accessible and a better experience for all involved, can we use it to future-proof our profession?

Paddy Gordon, owner of a mixed practice and farm vet, discusses his observations and experience in vet recruitment and retention. Increasing student numbers are coming through University but equine and farm need to be given sufficient opportunity and encouragement to allow students to select these careers. Paddy will highlight how practitioners can help students with early experience as well as support students most effectively through EMS. Championing success has also been important in developing the Farm Vet of the Future competition. Paddy has 30 years experience in practice and is working with Bristol and Surrey vet schools.

From service dogs supporting soldiers in war zones, to welfare cases in society, and The Horse Trust herd helping vets and scientists progress the knowledge we have and the practical implications. Nurses have been BEVA members for a long time, but as the professions progress and the industry changes we have seen the creation of the BEVA Nurse Committee and promotion of nurses' skills with the Schedule 3 guidance. Now nurses will be eligible to stand for BEVA Council, with two elected positions available going forwards. Bruce and Marie talk about why this development is so important for all of us in the industry.

Brad talks to Graham Duncanson in the latest episode of Life in Equine Practice!

Sarah Freeman and Katie Lightfoot, have both been working on student engagement at Nottingham vet school. The 'Stable Footing' initiative has been pivotal in opening up the door to career paths in equine practice. By breaking down the barriers which are invisible to so many of us already in the field, this team have made it an inviting, accessible and welcoming route to take, with equal opportunities and even funding available for those who need it. If we want to see the equine profession thrive going forwards, we all have a duty and responsibility to invest in the future workforce, and this starts with students 'seeing-practice'. How we interact and engage with students can be the 'make or break' for whether they choose a career in equine or not. Our actions could be putting off our best colleagues of tomorrow, but the good news is, there are simple ways we can avoid being 'that person'. Shining a light for those who come after you can be as rewarding for you as it is for the person you are helping.

Fleur, EIDS epidemiologist, provides an overview of the 2023 Q4 Equine Quarterly Disease Surveillance Report Focus Article, authored by Jose Vazquez-Boland and his team at the University of Edinburgh. Given how we’ve managed R. equi infections over the years, it's not surprising that we're now confronted with a troubling silent pandemic of multi-resistance. Eradicating it once it establishes itself in a country will prove immensely challenging, emphasising the critical importance of surveillance contributions within the UK. Discover how you can play a part in making a difference.

Tania Sundra of Avon Ridge Equine Veterinary Services, talks to us about publishing papers whilst running your own ambulatory practice in Western Australia... one way to keep yourself fulfilled in first opinion practice!

Maisie graduated a year ago and entered first opinion equine practice with all the knowledge she gained at vet school, but no prior equine industry experience and having not passed a nasogastric tube and having never 'rectalled' a colic. The learning curve was steep, but she recognised that many 'day one skills' in equine are not so routine that you must manage them alone, and that it's ok to stop and ask for help. Knowing when to seek help is a sign of development, not failure, and balancing this with growing your own self-confidence is key to enjoying any career, but never more applicable than to equine ambulatory practice. Fully expecting the ups and downs all new grads will experience, Maisie rode the rollercoaster of her first year with the help of friends, family and a supportive practice, and is now setting her sights on the next stage of her career as an equine vet.

Gemma Pearson, Director of Behaviour at The Horse Trust and based at Edinburgh Vet School, and Tamzin Furtado, Researcher in Human Behaviour at Liverpool, and also funded by The Horse Trust, are both big players at this year's Congress. Behavioural change is key to not only improving our clinical success as vets, in terms of patient outcomes and owner compliance, but it can also improve the welfare of the animals we serve, create positive experiences for our clients, and facilitate enjoyment and job satisfaction for us as vets and nurses. Clinical skills are not all that is required of us. The behaviour skills, both equine and human, are what makes us able to effect what we know and make long-term changes for the better.

Australian equine vet, Dr Zoe Walker, is one of the two BOVA Bain Fallon Competition winners, who have won a trip to the UK, to visit Rossdales, the RVC and BEVA Congress. On graduation, Angela completed an internship and spent time in traditional equine practice. But as life evolved, and with the arrival of kids, it became harder to balance the scales. Always one to think outside the box and ever willing to take up new opportunities, she has added more strings to her bow, and established a work-life balance in the equine field which works for her and her family.

Farrier and Honorary Associate of the RCVS, Simon Curtis, talks to us about 'The Foot' stream at Congress this year, which takes place on the Saturday. Lorna went to vet school as a mature student, and did what she could to accelerate her learning and gaining of experience. After 2 internships and ambulatory work she had to change tack to locuming, in order to raise her twin boys, one of whom was disabled and underwent major surgery in the USA. Identifying a need to be flexible in her work, she has since gone on to train as an equine physiotherapist as a parallel career to a part-time ambulatory vet role. Never short of ambition and determination, Lorna recognises that all this has been possible thanks to her network of support forged throughout life. When asked what the future holds, she was happy to report she intends to hit cruise control, and enjoy what she has.

Lucy chats to equine veterinary nurse Cassie Woods. 

Cassie sits on our nurse committee and runs a veterinary practice alongside her husband. In this episode, she shares her experience as a veterinary nurse and practice owner.

Edd has always enjoyed working on projects and has seamlessly woven this into a successful clinical career. Whilst recognising the opportunities and support that have allowed this to happen, alongside the funding, particularly from The Horse Trust and Waltham Petcare Science Institute, it is clear that his open-minded approach to careers and dedication to having a clinical impact have contributed to his success. With one leg in research and the other in general practice, he can understand the challenges vets face, and brings this perspective to the research he carries out; from Strangles to laminitis, and now Atypical Myopathy. His variety of skills and experience has enabled him to move the fulcrum of work-life balance as life has evolved, and this helps fuel his passion for exploring the frontiers of veterinary knowledge.

Tim Barnett chats to Sidney Ricketts about his life and career.

Florrie Clark, 4th year vet student at Cambridge, talks to us about how students are desperate for the opportunity to hone their skills in equine, which they feel lag behind their small animal skills. While the disparity is 'the nature of the beast', with a bursting curriculum and the difficulty of getting 'hands on' during equine EMS, there are plenty of other skills to be practiced and opportunities to be had. Observing procedures, working with the nurses, understanding case management and talking to clients, are all just as valuable. The key for new graduates and their employers and colleagues, is accepting the different starting point to that of a small animal vet. Nuturing confidence should be a priority, and can be done in the right environment with the right people. We all need to take up that gauntlet in order to create a profession which people want to be part of.

BEVA New Grad rep, Maisie Parsons, and Nottingham student, Jess Smith, talk about their experiences of BEVA Congress last year. Maisie embraced the benefits of the networking, the socials and the broad range of CPD on offer, which was a great way to fuel her first year in practice. Meanwhile, Jess took the opportunity to present her third year project, but to a audience she wasn't expecting! However, she took full advantage of the opportunities offered at Congress and is looking forward to doing the same this year once her final year rotations release her to Birmingham!

Helen talks about her passion for the equine veterinary industry, and how despite its challenges there can be solutions to fit most, if not all. What practices need is good leaders, skilled managers, an ethos which nurtures trust and a team which embraces healthy compromise from all sides. As individuals experience life's pushes and pulls, there must be understanding that goal posts will change and challenges will arise, but that this can be used to everyone's advantage if the the industry works together.

Imogen Burrows joined BEVA Council in 2020 with a wealth of front line experience, contributing to valuable resources and projects aimed at general practice. This year she was elected as Junior Vice President and is looking forward to tackling the issues, providing representation and delivering the tools that will benefit our members, from safety to welfare, from social license to veterinary ethics... Listen to Imogen talk about why the responsibility lies with all of us and how we can play our parts.

Final year veterinary student, Yuliia Zaruda, tells us about life as a vet student in Kyiv. With a lack of modern teaching resources and infrastructure to support the profession, vet students are working as qualified vets before they graduate and are taking self-directed learning to a whole other level. After completing an internship here in the UK, Yuliia hopes to one day bring her surgical skills back to the Ukraine to build a future for equine vets in her home country, and to enable the horses there to have access to the veterinary care that we so often take for granted here in the UK.
