17 May 2022The Battle of Alberta May Destroy the Province and I Can't Wait00:48:02

The Edmonton Oilers rattled off a pair of massive wins to close out their series against the Los Angeles Kings, and I figured now would be the perfect time to record a fresh podcast to talk about what comes next.

After wrapping up their series with the Kings in seven games, the Edmonton Oilers will square off against the Calgary Flames for the first time in the postseason since 1991. I don't know about you fine folks that are reading but I was too young to really remember much or even be aware of what was going on in '91, and that makes this the first playoff Battle of Alberta that I've ever truly experienced. Not only am I excited and nervous at the same time, but it's almost painful that we have to wait basically two more days before the puck finally drops. That said, maybe having a little bit of a break is exactly what we need right now as a bunch of the Oilers are playing through injuries, most notably Leon Draisaitl who reportedly played through a painful high ankle sprain in Game 7. Will he be ready to go on Wednesday? Now that I'm thinking about it, I just started to get angry that Mikey Anderson was able to slew foot/take Leon down with a greasy play that the league didn't seem to think was a big deal. Have you ever seen a league that refuses to protect its stars quite like the NHL? Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what to expect from our playoff matchup with Calgary.

26 Jan 2022Oilers showing resilience, pond hockey, and Tyler Yaremchuk01:22:24
In today’s episode of Better Lait Than Never, I broke down the last week here in Oil Country and how things just can't seem to get much worse, especially after the team suffered what was arguably one of the most depressing losses of the season. I also welcomed Jason Gregor to the podcast to talk about tough questions, the Oilers' struggles, and the price of cheese.

Kicking things off, I got started with a look at the last week in Oilers nation and how a lot can change when the team pulls together a couple of wins. While the team's issues are by no means solved, I would say that there is a marked improvement in the vibes around here and that is a win in itself. Up next, I welcomed Tyler Yaremchuk to the show to talk a little bit about the Oilers, learn about his history in radio and the Nation, as well as ask him what he expects for the time we'll be spending together in Jasper this weekend. Tyler and I have never been roommates on a Nation trip before and that meant I had a bunch of questions for him about everything from road trip etiquette to hangover remedies and everything in between. Lastly, I wrapped up today's podcast with another round of voicemails that you've all been leaving over the last week or so, and once again, you all came through in a big way.

08 Jun 2022Edmonton Oilers playoff recap with Tyler Yaremchuk01:32:36

How can you not love a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never to look back at the Oilers' playoff run? You've gotta love it, right? I mean, sure it would have been way better if the Oilers were playing in Game 5 tonight but that's not the way things went and thus we must talk about what went down.

The season may not have ended the way we wanted it to, but it's hard to say that we didn't have a damned good time over these past six weeks and that's what I wanted to focus on in today's show. I wanted to look back at the last six weeks and dive into how amazing it was to follow this team along on what was a magical run regardless of the disappointment we all felt when it was over. With that in mind, I brought Tyler Yaremchuk into the podcast to help me break down how much fun we had over the last six weeks and why Oilers fans should feel incredibly proud of the way this team handled a rollercoaster year. We also spoke about what the team may look like going into next season, including the question about where Evander Kane will end up among others. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last few days and how you'd sum up the Oilers' season.

19 Jan 2022Talkin' Oilers and Getting Pissy with Jason Gregor01:05:05

In today’s episode of Better Lait Than Never, I broke down the last week here in Oil Country and how things just can't seem to get much worse, especially after the team suffered what was arguably one of the most depressing losses of the season. I also welcomed Jason Gregor to the podcast to talk about tough questions, the Oilers' struggles, and the price of cheese.

Kicking things off, I got started with a look at another brutal week for Oilers fans as the team continues to struggle regardless of who they're playing again, and I don't think I'm talking out of school when I say that Saturday's loss to the Ottawa Senators is one of the most painful games we've had to endure. I also dove into yesterday's pissy scandal after Jim Matheson asked Leon Draisaitl why he's so pissy when the former Hart Trophy winner chose not to elaborate on one of Jim's questions. From there I welcomed Jason Gregor to the show to talk about how what it's like to participate in these media availabilities, what he considers a hard question, and where the Oilers need to go from here. As always, Gregor was a wealth of knowledge and it was fun to throw things at him and have him offer his takes on what the hell is going on around here. Lastly, I wrapped up today's podcast with another round of voicemails that you've all been leaving me over the last week or so, and to put it mildly, they were endlessly entertaining.

22 Mar 2022The NHL Trade Deadline Reaction Show00:32:39

The NHL Trade Deadline has come and gone, so I thought I would jump in with a quick reaction episode to recap the two moves the Oilers got done along with reading a bunch of your feedback.

Even though there weren't many of us that expected the Oilers to be busy at the NHL Trade Deadline, you're always hoping that the GM can make a move or two that will leave your team better off than they were before the swap meet got started. And even though it was probably unrealistic to expect that Ken Holland would get much done, he did make a pair of moves for Brett Kulak and Derick Brassard that bolstered the team's depth without adding too much in terms of additional salary. Yet, for many Oilers fans, making only a few depth moves seems like a waste of time when you're now in year seven of Connor McDavid's career and the team hasn't truly gone all-in for him yet. That said, the price of rentals and trades was pretty expensive this year so many there wasn't much more for Holland to do? Should we be giving him the benefit of the doubt?

21 May 2022The Battle of Alberta, Mikko Koskinen's farewell, and Mark Printz from Flamesnation01:09:03

A bonus episode of Better Lait Than Never? On a Saturday? After a big Oilers win? Absolutely.

After coming up with a huge win in Game 2 of their series against the Calgary Flames, the Edmonton Oilers are coming back to Edmonton with some momentum and I was absolutely fired up about it. Heading into Game 3 with the series tied, the Oilers have the opportunity to steal home-ice advantage away from a Calgary team that has been unable to stop Edmonton's offence. Led by Connor McDavid, the Oilers looked as solid as ever in last night's game, and if you're willing to ignore the first six minutes, they outscored the Flames by a 7-1 margin through the final 50 minutes. Sure, two of those goals were called back by horrible officiating and a questionable goalie interference call, but even that wasn't enough to stop our boys from willing themselves to victory. That's why I invited Mark Printz from Flamesnation to join me to talk about what happened, what the atmosphere was like at the Saddledome, and what he's expecting from his first playoff trip to Rogers Place tomorrow night. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what's been going on over the last few days as we navigate the madness that is the NHL playoffs.

11 Feb 2022Reaction Episode: Edmonton Oilers fire Dave Tippett00:54:56
In today’s episode of Better Lait Than Never, I jumped in with a solo show to talk about Dave Tippett getting fired, the reaction to the decision, and what it means for the Oilers going forward.

Kicking things off, I got the podcast started with a look at what ended up being a very busy Thursday for the Edmonton Oilers as news broke early that they had fired head coach Dave Tippett along with assistant coach Jim Playfair. In their place, Ken Holland is bringing up both Jay Woodcroft and Dave Manson from the Bakersfield Condors after they've laid down a solid track record of success at the AHL level. While this is a great day for many Oilers fans, it also shows how poorly things have gone over the last little while as Ken Holland was forced to make a move he's never done once in his entire career as a manager, and I was happy to hear him own his share of those issues. Getting away from the coaching change, I also touched on both Zack Kassian and Duncan Keith hitting the LTIR after last night's game, which is certainly unfortunate in that you never want to see guys get injured but it also creates a pool of cap space that the team didn't have beforehand. Does that space mean there's an opportunity to make a move? We shall see. Lastly, I wrapped up today’s podcast with another round of voicemails that you’ve all been leaving over the last week or so, and once again, you all came through in a big way.

22 Apr 2022Edmonton Oilers unstoppable at home, Clinchmas Eve, and a love letter to Jay Woodcroft00:58:45

Is there anything better than a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never to help us all get set for Clinchman? Absolutely not. The Edmonton Oilers are rolling and I am fired up about it!

Getting this week's podcast started, I jumped in with a look at everything that's happened over the last week as the Oilers inch closer to locking down their playoff spot in the Pacific Division. And seeing as the boys won all three games they've played since the last show — take that Nashville, Vegas, and the godless Stars — how can you not feel good about where the Oilers are at right now? With the Magic Number sitting at two, the earliest the boys can possibly clinch is tomorrow (Friday) against the Colorado Avalanche, but with the regular-season finish line so damned close, I'm starting to get excited about what's to come. Lastly, I wrapped up this week’s podcast with another round of voicemails and answered your questions on everything from the Oilers to grocery deals to wine recommendations and everything in between.

01 Apr 2022Connor McDavid hits 100 points, Leon Draisaitl nearing 50 goals, and my body is ready00:59:44
Is there anything better than a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never? Absolutely not. At least, not in my opinion. Kicking off this week's podcast, I jumped in with a look at the last seven days and how the Oilers have gone 3-1 over that time with the lone loss coming on Saturday night against the Flames. Unfortunately, I was in attendance for that game and while I will admit how much fun it was to be back at the Saddledome, the excitement was certainly tempered after the Flames were able to pump nine goals in at even strength. *spits* The good news, however, is that the Oilers have won both of their games since Saturday night with a decisive victory over the Arizona Coyotes and a much tighter one against a depleted Los Angeles Kings. Regardless of how they won, the important part is that the Oilers have picked up four out of four points so far this week, and I'm hoping that sets them up for a strong finish against the Blues and Ducks. Lastly, I wrapped up this week’s podcast with another round of voicemails and answered your questions on everything from the Oilers to dating to wine recommendations and everything in between.

16 Mar 2022Edmonton Oilers are rolling, Mike Smith scares me, and the NHL Trade Deadline01:14:26

Happy Wednesday, Internet friends, and thank you for welcoming me into your earholes for a brand new episode of Better Lait Than Never. This week, I'm looking at the Oilers' win streak, the Mike Smith conundrum, trade deadline, and a whole lot more.

Kicking off this week's podcast, I jumped in with a look at what has been a rollercoaster ride for the Edmonton Oilers and their fans as the team is right in the thick of a playoff race with a handful of other squads. I mean, is there a better example of the rollercoaster than the wins against Tampa Bay and Detroit? The good news for the Oilers, however, is that they're starting to pick up some wins, guys are starting to get healthy again, and some of the teams they're fighting with are starting to fall off. That said, with 20+ games left on the schedule, there is still plenty of time for anything to happen. Speaking of anything happening, that led me into a discussion about tomorrow night's game against the Buffalo Sabres as he was in the starter's net this morning at practice. Can Smith get himself back to where he needs to be a positive contributor for this hockey team? Should we even be giving him any more chances? Lastly, I wrapped up this week’s podcast with another round of voicemails and answered your questions on everything from the Oilers to dating to wine recommendations and everything in between.

11 Mar 2022Being an Oilers fan is a stressful life01:13:43

It’s Thursday and that means that I’ve got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never set and ready for your ear holes. This week, I looked at an up and down run of games for the Oilers, goaltending issues, your voicemails, and more.

Kicking off this week's podcast, I got started with a look at the Oilers schedule as we're entering what can only be described as a critical run of games for the team. Outside of Saturday's rematch against the de fending champs, the Oilers are looking at a run of winnable but ultimately must-have games, and I'll be very excited to see whether they can make hay in that time or if they'll falter as they did a week ago against Chicago and Montreal. From there I jumped in with a look at the biggest news stories from the past week, including some roster updates, new contracts, feel-good stories, McDrai's missing teeth, and a whole lot more. Lastly, I wrapped up this week’s podcast with another round of voicemails and answered your questions on everything from the Oilers to dating to wine recommendations and everything in between.

25 Feb 2022Nation History, Hip Hop, and the Edmonton Oilers feat. Wanye Gretz02:41:56
In this week’s episode of Better Lait Than Never, I wanted to clear some time and space because I knew that having Wanye as a guest meant that this one would run long. As expected, that's exactly what happened.

As much as I expected that this episode of the podcast was going to be different, I didn't really expect that it would go into as many areas as Wanye and I ended up getting to, but I also don't know why I was surprised. Any time the two of us get together with nothing but time on our hands, we end up diving into so many weird areas that I didn't really get to many of the topics I had prepped for today's show. From the start of Oilersnation to Ryan Smyth to his love of hip hop and pop culture, diving into Wanye's brain is something that I always enjoy and I really hope you all feel the same. And of course, how could I do a podcast with Wanye without talking about our beloved Edmonton Oilers, what's going on with this team, and where we think it needs to go to bring this franchise back to greatness. I know this is a fairly new podcast for me, but this was easily my favourite episode so far and I really hope you guys like it too.

06 Apr 2022Edmonton Oilers keep rolling and Mike Smith shuts up the haters00:52:36
Is there anything better than a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never to go along with an Edmonton Oilers winning streak? Absolutely not. At least, not in my opinion.

Kicking off this week’s podcast, I jumped in with a look at the past week and everything that's gone down with the Oilers, including Leon Draisaitl hitting 50 goals for a second time, Mike Smith shutting up the haters, and the standings being as tight as one could possibly imagine. From there, I looked back on the three wins against St. Louis, Anaheim, and San Jose that happened since the last show and how all three of those wins came in completely different ways. Regardless of how they won, the important part is that the Oilers picked up six out of six points over that span, and I’m hoping this run sets them up for a strong finish to the week against the Kings and Avs. From there, I took a quick pit stop in The Good Life to talk about some of the things that have made me happy over the last few days, and how I'm starting to realize that I'm slowly turning into my dad as I age. Lastly, I wrapped up this week’s podcast with another round of voicemails and answered your questions on everything from the Oilers to dating to wine recommendations and everything in between.

16 Jun 2022Sketchy snack foods, Edmonton Oilers rumours, and the NHL salary cap00:52:46

Your work week is 60% of the way through and I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never to help power you through to the weekend.

Kicking off this week's podcast, I got started with a look at the Good Life after I asked a question on Twitter that had me in stitches. For my money, this had to be the most fun I've had while recording Better Lait Than Never because the answers you fine folks chipped in with on my question of the day had me dying from laughter. Not knowing what to expect, I asked all of you what is the go-to snack that you make for yourselves that other people think is weird and the responses were absolutely fantastic and beyond anything I ever expected. From there, I covered the latest Oilers news and rumors, specifically what's happening in net after some insiders were speculating this past week on the future of Mike Smith and whether or not he'll be back between the pipes in Edmonton next year. I mean, the guy is 40 years old at this point and you'd have to think that getting ready for an NHL season would be tough on the ol' body. Sticking with the Oilers, I also looked at the absurdity that is the NHL CBA after Bill Daly announced today that there would be no recapture penalty for Chicago if Duncan Keith decides to retire with one year left on his deal. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last few days in your life.

30 Jun 2022Vacation recap, Jesse Puljujarvi rumours, and the NHL Draft00:52:45

Your work week is 60% of the way through and I’ve got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never to help power you through to the weekend. Are you excited? Of course you are.

Did you miss me while I was away on vacation? You totally did, right? I mean, I can only imagine how painful it was to not have a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never to listen to while you wrapped up your week, but fortunately, I'm back with a fresh podcast to make sense of everything that's happened since we last spoke. After spending a few minutes recapping my vacay for BC, I jumped into all of the Oilers news I missed including the Jay Woodcroft extension that had me feeling pretty damned excited. That said, the Woodcroft contract got me thinking about Dave Tippett and how we almost never got to experience a playoff run because of his inability to get the most out of this roster. Is it fair to complain about a guy that got the boot months ago? I don't know the answer to that question but I did it anyway. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last few days in your life.

06 Jul 2022Edmonton Oilers draft predictions with Jason Gregor01:20:40

It's NHL Draft week and that means the rumours are flying around the Internet at a feverish pace, which gave us all kinds of things to talk about on today's episode of Better Lait Than Never.

To kick things off, I jumped in with a quick thank you to all of you for helping me raise money for the Edmonton Humane Society with my line of #FranksPicks gear over the 2021-22 NHL season. Originally, I wasn't sure if anyone would want to buy clothes with pictures of my dog on them, but as the campaign went along, the support that came in was incredible. Getting back to the Oilers, there was no shortage of topics to cover as the team is in the mix on all kinds of players and speculation. The question I have, however, is whether the Oilers will actually be active or if this is another one of those years where the hype will outshine what actually happens during the draft. From there, I welcomed Jason Gregor to the podcast to give a few updates from Montreal and offered his takes on what the Oilers might be looking to do over these next couple of weeks. Will we see the Puljujarvi trade so many of us are expecting? What about Claude Giroux after his name was tied to the Oilers earlier this week? Lastly, I wrapped up this week's podcast with another round of voicemails after I asked for your bold predictions for what Ken Holland will be able to accomplish during the silly season.

08 Jul 2022Zack Kassian trade reaction00:19:44

The first round of the NHL Draft is complete and so too is Zack Kassian's time here in Edmonton as he was moved to the Arizona Coyotes in a cap-dump trade. Since I've got everything set up in my house anyway, I wanted to record a quick reaction podcast to say goodbye and look ahead at what comes next.

Can you believe it's almost been seven years since the Oilers traded Ben Scrivens to Montreal in exchange for Zack Kassian? On December 28th, 2015, the Oilers moved the Professor to Montreal for Kassian who was going through some tough times in his personal life. Upon his arrival, it didn't take long for Kass to win the crowd over with his knack for timely goals and a willingness to drop the mitts with just about everyone. Needless to say, there were plenty of good times in those early days. But as his tenure went along and this latest contract was signed, expectations for Kassian grew beyond what was seemingly doable for the 31-year-old forward, and that meant he had to go in order to clear some space. Even though things didn't necessarily end the way we wanted them to end, I still wanted to say goodbye to a guy that gave us plenty to cheer and argue about over the years, and I wish him nothing but the best in Arizona.

09 Jul 2022Duncan Keith retirement reaction00:23:59

Two emergency episodes of Better Lait Than Never in the same day? Oh yeah, it's happening.

When the Oilers traded Zack Kassian to the Coyotes last night, I felt pretty good about the way Ken Holland was able to clear some cap space for the summer given that he has plenty of items on his offseason to-do list. I thought that having those extra $3.2 million dollars would go a long way to achieving some of our goals and re-signing players that needed new contracts, but what I didn't expect was that Duncan Keith would be calling it quits less than 24 hours later. When Pierre LeBrun first broke the story, I was almost in disbelief that we were going to have another $5.5 million in cap space fall in our laps. That's not to say that I hated Duncan Keither or anything — I'm certainly not one of those Oilers fans that refuse to acknowledge the good things he did for us — but I also don't think it's unfair to admit that he's not the player he once was when he signed this deal in the first place. Now that he's done and his Hall of Fame career went from an is to a was, the biggest question I have is about what the Oilers will do next. Who will they get to fill those minutes? Are more trades coming? Which defencemen could fit in the Keith slot for the 2022-23 season? I walk through all this and more in the second bonus episode of Better Lait Than Never.

14 Jul 2022Jack Campbell, Evander Kane, and an NHL free agency recap00:51:06

The NHL's annual swap and shop kicked off this morning and the Oilers were right in the middle of the action, and that means today's episode of Better Lait Than Never is all about what our beloved team got done and what holes they still have to get filled.

To kick off the podcast, I got started with a look at the bundle of players Ken Holland was able to get signed today and how impressive it was to get them all on (mostly) team-friendly deals. I mean, just looked at the Evander Kane extension that came down last night... who would have expected the Oilers to get Kane done at basically a fraction of what was the rumoured ask? Then, first thing this morning, the Oilers put their bet down in net with a $25 million deal for Jack Campbell that will see him get the bulk of the starts for the next five seasons. Ken Holland was also able to re-sign Brett Kulak to a team-friendly deal after acquiring him from Montreal at the trade deadline last season. Like Kane, Kulak spent some time checking his options around the league before circling back to the Oilers and inking a four-year deal that will keep him in his hometown. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last few days in your life.

21 Jul 2022Oilers RFAs, grocery stores, and the Calgary Flames conundrum00:51:17

The NHL Draft and the start of free agency are now behind us, and that means this week's episode of Better Lait Than Never is dedicated to what's left to get done for the Oilers and a whole lot of nonsense.

To kick off the podcast, I jumped in with a confession about how annoying this part of the NHL offseason can be simply because it's filled with only speculation and not a whole lot of real news. That said, maybe the lack of news is a good thing? I mean, we could be like Calgary Flames fans that are living in constant dread that their team will lose not only one of its best players but two of them in a single offseason. Now that Gaudreau is off to Columbus, the conversation has turned to what's going to happen with Matthew Tkachuk and whether or not he'll even be in Calgary once the season rolls around in October. Up here in Edmonton, the Oilers got the bulk of their heavy lifting done on day one of free agency but that doesn't mean there aren't still items left on the ol' to-do list, including decisions to be made on Jesse Puljujarvi, Kailer Yamamoto, and Ryan McLeod. Can Ken Holland find a way to sign all three? How does the newly signed Mattias Janmark fit in here? Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last few days in your life.

27 Jul 2022Jesse Puljujarvi re-signs, Oilers defence, and your most hated household chores01:03:35

Most of the free agency heavy lifting is now behind us, and that means this week’s episode of Better Lait Than Never is all about what the Oilers need to get done before the season starts and a whole lot of nonsense.

To kick off this week's podcast, I jumped in with a confession about poor adulting on my part, and specifically how I'm still so bad at doing many common household chores despite pushing 40 years old. Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, I'm not so sure that I'm bad at some of these things so much as I just hate doing them, which means I probably put in less effort than I should. Thankfully, a lot of you fine folks seem to be in the same situation as I got flooded with responses when I asked about everyone's most hated chores. Getting to the Oilers, I looked at the Jesse Puljujarvi extension that saw him re-sign with the team on a one-year, $3 million contract. As much as it was exciting for me to see Jesse's name on a new deal, the question I have now is whether or not he'll actually be here when the season rolls around. Dare to dream? From there, I spent even more time harping on the Oilers' defensive situation as I still don't think this group will be good enough to truly be considered a Stanley Cup contender. But can this problem be fixed ahead of the season? That's the big question. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last few days in your life.

03 Aug 2022Waiting on Kailer Yamamoto, and people do WHAT in grocery stores?00:52:58

If you're a big fan of Wednesdays then there is no doubt in my mind that you'll also be fired up about a brand new episode of Better Lait Than Never.

To kick off this week's podcast, I got started with a look at my weekend and specifically how I've never felt older than I did when I took my missus to K-Days on Saturday night. From the moment we walked in until the cab picked us up after the fireworks, that was easily one of the most expensive reminders that I'm an old guy now that I've ever had. Getting back to the Oilers, I looked at the limited news that's been happening with the team over these last week, including Kevin Lowe's retirement announcement and Adidas stepping out as the NHL's official gear provider. I also spent some time talking about Kailer Yamamoto's next contract as Bob Stauffer speculated on Twitter last week that our fun-sized hero may be in life for a multi-year extension rather than a 'see you at the same time next year' deal like Jesse Puljujarvi signed last week. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week in your life.

04 Aug 2022Kailer Yamamoto contract reaction00:17:45

I literally just talked about how this was going to happen, and since I hadn't even left my laptop yet I figured I would do an instant reaction to the Kailer Yamamoto contract.

How dare I come at you with two episodes of Better Lait Than Never in the span of an hour? That's right, more me! I mean, how could I not record a quick instant reaction episode considering I had just finished posting a podcast ABOUT KAILER YAMAMOTO when the Oilers announced his two-year contract extension? It's ridiculous how unlucky that timing was. Normally, I wouldn't even have started recording this early in the day but that's the way she goes sometimes, eh? Meh. Here's more free content for you anyway, and you should like and subscribe or else I'll post the episodes twice. You've been warned.

11 Aug 2022Should the Oilers sign Phil Kessel? How could we not?!00:59:47

It's Wednesday and that can only mean one thing... a brand new episode of your favourite podcast - Better Lait Than Never! Are you excited? Of course you are.

Kicking off this week's podcast, I got started with a tribute to Ben Stelter after news came out that everyone's favourite fan passed away last night after an extended battle with cancer. Needless to say, it was tough news for everyone to hear today and I wanted to send my thoughts out to the Stelter family during this horrible time. From there, I tried to get back to business and create some FOMO for each and every one of you that chose not to come with us to Toronto on Friday for the first-ever summer #NationVacation. While we're having an amazing time cheering on the Jays, you'll be at home in your tear-soaked pajamas and I hope you'll find a way to learn from this most terrible of lessons. Getting back to the Oilers, how could I not mention Darnell Nurse's wedding that took place last weekend, or how the biggest story to come out of that knot-tying celebration were the pictures of Connor and Leon. I also ran through some of the latest rumours that are out there, including Edmonton's alleged interest in Phil Kessel. If Phil Kessel isn't to your liking, then would I be able to interest you in a slightly used PK Subban? I'm not sure where this rumour came from, but the Oilers were also tied to the 33-year-old defender this past week so I looked through his last few years and tried to decide if it was a good idea or not. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week in your life.

18 Aug 2022Give me Sam Gagner! We must right the Athanasiou wrong.00:52:46

Another Wednesday is here and that means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is set and ready to infiltrate your earholes. This week, we're talkin' #NationVacation, Sam Gagner, your voicemails, and a whole lot more.

To kick off this week's podcast, I got started with a recap of our trip to Toronto and thanked everyone that joined for making this first summer edition of the #NationVacation so much fun. Getting back to the Oilers, I looked at the Sam Gagner rumours that have taken over these parts over the last few days and whether it even makes sense to bring the 33-year-old forward back for a third tour of duty. Not to mention, Ryan McLeod still needs a new contract and that doesn't even touch the fact that the Oilers have no cap space to get it done. We still don't know who's going to get traded to make the money work, and with only a couple of months left until the season starts, we're looking at the back nine of this offseason with plenty left to do on Ken Holland's to-do list. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week in your life.

25 Aug 2022Yes, I want Patrick Kane. No, I don't know how the Oilers make it work.00:55:21

You've made it past the midway point of your week and that means it's time for a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never to help get you through to the weekend. This week, I'm talking Oilers rumours, grocery store deals, and a whole lot more.

To kick off this week's podcast, I got started with a quick recap of the Oilersnation Open that happened on Friday out at Cat Tail Crossing. I didn't want to dive too deep into the tourney — we already did a recap Monday on Real Life — but I did want to touch on a few different highlights from my day cruising around in a cart. Getting back to the Oilers, I tried to make sense of some of the rumours that are floating around these parts lately, and that led me to spend some time in fantasy land just in case anything actually happens. If this Patrick Kane thing doesn't actually happen — that's what I'd bet on tbh — do the Oilers have a Plan B? Do they even need a Plan B? Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week in your life.

31 Aug 2022Leon Draisaitl, off-season predictions, and the Calm Before the Storm00:55:09

You’ve made it to the back half of your work week and that means it’s time for a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never to help power you through to the weekend. This week, I’m talking Leon Draisaitl quotes, Kool-Aid season predictions, and a whole lot more.

To kick off this week's podcast, I got started with a question my boy Woz asked all of you on our social media channels this past week pertaining to which Oiler has to have the best season of their career. Is there an obvious answer? Are there a bunch of guys that are probably feeling the heat? With season predictions at the front of mind, I jumped into some of my own predictions for the year as we inch toward the start of the preseason. From there, I dove into a few of the quotes Leon Draisaitl dropped on 32 Thoughts this past week, and specifically how he taught himself how to play on only one leg during the playoffs. To me, if he's teaching himself to play on one leg then the rest of the NHL is in a world of hurt once he's back and healthy. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week in your life.

02 Sep 2022Ryan Murray and Sam Gagner reaction episode00:19:51

With news breaking this afternoon that the Oilers had signed Ryan Murray to a one-year contract and that Sam Gagner had signed in Winnipeg, I figured I may as well settle into my home studio and bang out a quick reaction episode of the podcast.

For the last few weeks, we've been hearing all about Sam Gagner coming back to Edmonton for a third tour of duty on either a PTO on a league-minimum contract. Well, as it turns out, neither of those things happened as the 33-year-old veteran was eventually snapped up by the Winnipeg Jets. Shortly after that news broke, however, the Oilers had their own announcement to make as it was revealed that they had signed the left-handed defender to a one-year contract. Was Gagner signing in Winnipeg a domino that fell or was the timing of these two signings purely coincidental? I dove into it all on this quick reaction episode of Better Lait Than Never.

07 Sep 2022The Oilers don't need Jake Virtanen, they need defence... and a Ryan McLeod contract00:53:37

I'd love to know how many of you are circling Wednesdays on your calendar because you know this very special day means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never will be ready to invade your earholes. *crickets* Okay, so maybe don't answer that. In the meantime, however, here's a fresh podcast to break down all things Edmonton Oilers and whatever else is going on around here.

To kick off this week's episode of BLTN, I jumped in with a look at the long weekend and specifically how mine started with the Taylor Hawkins tribute concert that left both myself and my missus with an overwhelming run of allergies. Despite the tragic circumstances that led to the show, I can say with certainty that it was honestly one of the best concerts I've ever seen and I say that as someone that watched from my couch. Getting back to the Oilers, I couldn't believe that I actually had to spend some time talking about why bringing in Jake Virtanen is a bad idea, but after word came out of Vancouver that the Oilers were in the mix on the free agent, I gave my take on why there are absolutely bigger fish to fry. I also touched on the new Ring of Honour style Hall of Fame that the Oilers announced this morning as the team will finally have a place to pay tribute to some of the great Oilers from over the years that won't ever make the NHL's Hall of Fame. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week in your life.

14 Sep 2022Connor McDavid speaks, Ryan McLeod's contract, and the Saddledome collapsing01:13:43

You're 60% of the way through your week and that can only mean one thing — a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never to welcome into your earholes. This week I'm looking at the Boundary Battle of Alberta, Connor McDavid's first presser back in town, Ryan McLeod's contract, and a whole lot more.

To kick off this week’s episode of BLTN, I jumped in with a quick look at the Boundary Battle of Alberta event that Woz, Kennedy, and Kylie covered for us this past weekend, and how I was absolutely stunned that we were granted access to any of the players. Needless to say, it hasn't exactly been easy for us to make these kinds of things happen over the years and that's why I was shocked to see how things played out. Getting back to the current team, I walked through the latest information about Ryan McLeod's upcoming contract and also the potential for Jake Virtanen to be an Oiler even though it doesn't seem like many people are interested in the experiment. Sticking with the Vitanen rumour, the other component of this nonsense rumour is that it would require someone to go and many think it would be Jesse Puljujarvi. I mean, really? It's ridiculous. I also spent some time talking about jersey ads and Jack Campbell's new gear setup, which all looks incredible if you ask me. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week in your life.

21 Sep 2022Ken Holland's pre-camp comments, the Jake Virtanen PTO, and Evander Kane01:01:01

You’re more than halfway through your week and that can only mean one thing — a brand new episode of Better Lait Than Never to welcome into your earholes and enjoy. This week I’m looking at Ken Holland's pre-camp availability, the decision to give Jake Virtanen a PTO, Evander Kane's settlement, and a whole lot more.

To kick off this week’s episode of BLTN, I jumped in with the news that most Oilers fans were talking about this week, which is obviously the club's decision to bring Jake Virtanen in on a PTO. As much as I had been trying to avoid this story over the past couple of weeks because there was nothing going on outside of rumours, the guy is now at Oilers camp and that means it was time to give my take. From there, I looked at some of Ken Holland's pre-camp comments from this morning's pressure as he covered all kinds of ground, including Ryan McLeod's contract status, Jesse Puljujarvi's frustrations, Philip Broberg's progression, and more. Even though I never expect Ken Holland to say a whole lot in his media availabilities, I did find some interesting tidbits within his presser that I wanted to share. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week in your life.

22 Sep 2022Ryan McLeod contract reaction00:19:31

A fresh Oilers contract for Ryan McLeod means a fresh reaction episode of Better Lait Than Never to break it all down.

Now that Ryan McLeod has officially signed his new contract, I figured that I would fire up the ol' home studio and bang out a quick reaction episode of Better Lait Than Never to make sense of what's happened here. I mean, I don't think anyone can argue that McLeod's deal is incredibly team friendly and that he should be applauded for accepting less, but having this deal done means we're inching closer to whatever move Holland makes to get cap compliant. Seeing as we've been hearing rumours about a certain Finnish lad over the past... oh I don't know... three years, I'm nervous that the time has finally come to see my beloved Jesse leave town. Can it be? I dove into this and more in this quick reaction episode of the podcast.

28 Sep 2022NHL Salary Cap is going up, the pre-season is too long, and handsome Jay Woodroft00:52:16

We've hit the 60% complete mark on your work week and that can only mean one thing: a brand new episode of Better Lait Than Never is set and ready to invade your ear holes.

Kicking off this week's podcast, I jumped in with a look at the pre-season after the annual tune-up event kicked off this past Sunday in Winnipeg. As much as I was excited for that first one, I will readily admit that my enthusiasm for this two-week practice period dropped off in a real hurry. Now, with six games left (counting tonight) on deck, I know that our patience will be tested as handsome Jay Woodcroft (more on that later) whittles the roster down to what we'll see on opening night. Speaking of Jay Woodcroft, our new hero was named as the NHL's most handsome coach yesterday so how could I not spend a few minutes talking about Bae Woodcroft being a smoldering hunk behind the bench? Next up, we also got word that the NHL's salary cap is going to be rising quite a bit over the next few years, and for us Oilers fans, this news couldn't come at a better time given the two stars we'll have to sign in the few years. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week in your life.

05 Oct 2022Talkin' Oilers and teeing up the NHL season with Frank Seravalli00:57:30

Is there anything more exciting than a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never to help you get through what's left of the week? On today's show, I walked through the latest news from Oilers training camp, handed out the pre-season champ award, and welcomed Frank Seravalli from Daily Faceoff to help me tee up the 2022-23 NHL season.

To kick off today's podcast, I got started with a guy that everyone wants to talk about: Dylan Holloway. After pumping a hat trick home against the Canucks on Wednesday night, we citizens are about as confident as it gets that this guy will be able to jump into this lineup and make a difference. As much as I'm on board with pounding back the Kool-Aid, the hype has started to remind me of another Oilers prospect that once scored a pre-season hat trick. Changing gears, I spent some time on the announcement that The Nation Network will be launching a handful of new live shows this season, including Tyler's new project called Oilersnation Everyday. From there, I welcomed Frank Seravalli to the podcast to help me break down some of the latest rumours and news that are circling the Oilers these days. I asked Frank everything from the latest on Jesse Puljujarvi, to the Leafs clearing cap space for Connor McDavid, to who he thinks is going to win the Stanley Cup. As you'll hear, we covered a lot of territory in this interview and I hope I was able to sneak in all of the questions you fine folks wanted me to ask.

13 Oct 2022Covering a new Oilers season, but really wanting to talk about blink-18201:03:16

Hasn't it felt like an eternity since the Oilers last played a meaningful game? I know the last one is a tough one to remember — I don't like thinking about it — but the good news is that tonight's matchup against the Canucks offers a clean slate.

To kick off this week's podcast, I jumped in with some personal news after your boy had what can only be described as a fantastic start to the week. Not only did your boy kick off a new car deal, but my favourite band on earth, blink-182, announced that they’re getting back together and going on tour. Needless to say, I had a lot to be thankful for. Getting back to the Oilers, I didn't want to spend a whole lot of time on tonight's game against the Vancouver Canucks since the game will be over by the time most people are able to listen, so instead, I focused on some of my expectations for the year. Needless to say, the Nation is fired up about the 2022-23 season and I was having a hard time containing my own excitement. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week in your life.

20 Oct 2022How concerned are we with the Oilers tough start and scoring woes?00:57:26

A fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never to go along with the same ol' hockey team? New podcast, same bad habits? Let's talk about it.

I'm not going to lie to you, I did not expect to be walking folks away from the panic button only three games into this new NHL season but that's exactly where we're at for a small portion of people. Does it make sense to freak out this early? I know expectations are high, but we've only played three games so far. Sticking with what's happened so far, I walked through Dylan Holloway's first three NHL games and how the start of his career hasn't exactly gone as planned. Outside of getting blown out by Ilya Lyubushkin last night against Buffalo, Holloway has struggled a little bit so far but I don't think that's anything we shouldn't have expected. I also looked at some of the other roster moves the team has made over the last week, including the recall of Markus Niemelainen who I personally have a tonne of time for as a shutdown defender. He may not be ready for the big minutes/assignments just yet, but I don't think it'll be long either. Pivoting to fashion, the NHL released everyone's new reverse retro jerseys today so I rang through who did a good job and who failed miserably. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week in your life.

26 Oct 2022Edmonton Oilers hit the road, why we love them so much, and podcast confessions01:04:36

A fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never to get you set for an Oiler's game day? What's not to like about that? Let's talk about it.

It may not have been the start we had planned for our beloved Edmonton Oilers, but they managed to wrap up their six-game homestand with a win over the Penguins and a .500 record overall. I know this first run of the year was nowhere close to perfect but was the Oilers' start to the season really as bad as some people are suggesting? With the early season retrospective out of the way, I looked ahead at Edmonton's first road trip of the year and how these next three games (St. Louis, Chicago, and Calgary) are incredibly important even though we're still so early in the season. Sticking with the Oilers, my BLTN Question of the Week revolved around why we started to love them in the first place, especially when you consider that this franchise hasn't given us a whole lot to cheer about over the last couple of decades. This conversation about why we love the Oilers led into another hilarious round of Podcast Confessions that saw podcast listeners dropping me their deepest, darkest secrets for the enjoyment of others.  Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week in your life.

02 Nov 2022Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid are unstoppable right now00:50:43

Is there anything better than watching the Edmonton Oilers picking up wins like they're going out of style? No. That's the answer. That's why I was super excited to record today's episode of Better Lait Than Never and break it all down.

After an up-and-down start to the year, the Edmonton Oilers have responded with five straight wins and look as good as we could have ever hoped they would. It's not just that they're winning games, but that the Oilers are finding different ways to cash in two points, which is something we haven't always seen around here. Take last night's game against the Predators, for example. That game was as dominant as we've seen this team play so far this season, but wasn't at all the same as the win over Calgary on Saturday. In round 2 of the BOA, the Oilers had to grind their way to a win, and had it not been for Stuart Skinner then they probably would have gone home empty-handed. The point I'm making here is that the Oilers are not only winning games but they're doing whatever it takes to get there, and I'm certainly appreciating the resiliency. One thing I don't appreciate, however, is the way that some fans are trying to create a goaltending controversy even though there is nothing to be upset about right now. Sure, we'd like Jack Campbell to be allowing fewer goals than he is right now, but the point of hockey is to win games and the Oilers are doing that so I really don't understand the panic. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week in your life.

10 Nov 2022Oilers gutsy win in Tampa, Evander Kane out longterm, and getting verified on Twitter01:07:18

It's Wednesday and that means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is ready to help you make sense of all things Edmonton Oilers and life in general. This week, we're breaking down the Oilers' PK struggles, Evander Kane's scary injury, Connor McDavid's goal heater, and a whole lot more.

Kicking off this week's episode of BLTN, I got started with a look at my own Twitter account after I bucked up the money and got myself that sweet, sweet blue checkmark. Getting into the podcast for real, I started off the news by looking at the scary incident involving Evander Kane from last night in Tampa Bay, and what his loss means to the Oilers in the short term. Now that we know Kane will be out for 3-4 months, there's little doubt that losing him for this long can only be described as a massive blow to this hockey team. I also looked at what the hell is going on with the Oilers' penalty kill right now as the boys are currently sitting near the bottom of the pile in terms of execution when down a man. Looking at the positives, I had to give Jack Campbell some love for his performance against the Lightning after he was so hard on himself following Saturday's loss to the Stars. Do we like that Campbell is so hard on himself when things are going poorly? Next up, I went on a quick rant about Jesse Puljujarvi after seeing another round of arguments break out this week with either side of the aisle arguing with fiery passion about what he does or does not do. Frankly, the hyperbole surrounding the kid is all kinds of annoying. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week in your life.

17 Nov 2022Stuart Skinner Szn, Dylan Holloway, and the horrible coverage in Edmonton01:08:14

It's Wednesday and that means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is ready to help you make sense of all things Edmonton Oilers and life in general. This week, we're breaking down Stuart Skinner's play in net, what kind of disgusting snacks you're all eating, and a whole lot more.

To kick off this week's episode of Better Lait Than Never, I got started with a story about my girlfriend making fun of me for my shitty food choices. Even though I'm generally a reasonable eater overall, sometimes I love a good bologna sandwich and that was just gross to her for whatever reason. That led me to ask for your favourite foods that other people think are gross, and as always, you fine folks always make me laugh. Getting back to the Oilers, I walked through this week's light schedule even though both games on tap are incredibly important. That led me to wonder what Jay Woodcroft will do for a goalie split. Will he run Skinner for both games? That's what I'd do. I also gave my take on what the Oilers should do with Dylan Holloway seeing as the rookie is barely playing, and when he does play, he runs the risk of being stapled to the bench after every mistake. Is that really the best use of his time right now? I don't think so. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week in your life.

23 Nov 2022Oilers need depth scoring, gadget talk, and the Universe vs. Jack Campbell01:11:05

The thing I love most about Better Lait Than Never is that I can spend an hour talking about the Edmonton Oilers, fake hair, and quesadilla makers all at the same time. It's wonderful, and quite frankly, you should be a part of the shenanigans.

Kicking off this week's podcast, I jumped in with a look at the question of the week, which revolved around the favourite gadget and toys you have in your home. Do you love quesadilla makers? Slap chops? As always, BLTN listeners came through with another great list of items that had me both laughing and adding to my Amazon cart. Getting back to the Oilers, I walked through the current roster and looked at some of the players that need to start contributing with some offence. That's not to say that I don't appreciate good underlying numbers or general hustle — I absolutely do on both counts — but the Oilers are once again at a point where they're needing more people to chip in. Speaking of players that need to be better, the Universe seems to be against Jack Campbell right now as the goaltender ended up breaking his nose on Monday in New Jersey after an errant puck flew into the bench and popped him on the nose. I mean, if that's not a metaphor for how the start of his year has gone then I don't know what is. Changing gears, I then looked at a couple of stories from around the NHL as Ryan Reaves was just traded to the Minnesota Wild for an influx of "swagger" and Cale Makar just broke Sergei Zubov's record for fastest defenceman to get 200 NHL points. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week in your life.

01 Dec 2022Comeback wins, Edmonton Oilers injury woes, and cancelling the #Beetcast01:11:31

It's been an emotional week, hasn't it? When I last recorded Better Lait Than Never, we were talking about how important it would be for the Oilers to beat the New York Islanders and why that was a game they needed to have. How naive we all were.

To kick off this week's episode of BLTN, I got started with a look at the future of the #Beetcast after Tyler announced that another post-game show would be coming to the site in the next little while. What does that mean for my show? Is Tyler out to get me? It's hard to say for sure, but I gave an update on everything that's been going on and where I think we'll end up from here. On a brighter note, I then jumped into the question of the week that revolved around fast food and specifically which restaurant you would choose to eat at for the rest of your life if you could only pick one. As always, you guys came through with some amazing answers and reasons for why you were picking certain spots and I had a whole so much fun working through this segment. Getting back to the Oilers, I ran through what can only be described as a rollercoaster week of games for the Edmonton Oilers that saw them get shut out on one night before running through a pair of comeback wins in the next two. Needless to say, it was emotional. On the downside, the Oilers also suffered another round of injury issues that saw them lose both Ryan McLeod and Warren Foegele for an undetermined amount of time. With four of the top-nine forwards out, who is going to step up and help fill that void? Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week in your life.

07 Dec 2022Nick Alberga stops by to talk hockey, new media, and what's up with Jack Campbell01:42:57

It's Wednesday and that can only mean two things: Cheap chicken wings and a new episode of Better Lait Than Never! This week, we're talking about the Oilers' most recent run of inconsistency, Jay Woodcroft coming in the crosshairs, and I welcomed Nick Alberga to talk about everything from fantasy hockey to baseball to what's happening with Jack Campbell.

To kick off this week's episode of BLTN, I got started with a look at the Christmas season and specifically what is the worst part of this time of year. Next week, we'll do the best parts of the Christmas season, but we always get our veggies out the way first, and as always, you fine folks had the funniest answers. Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, I gave my take on how shocked I am to see some Oilers fans turning on Jay Woodcroft already. Whether it's his line combinations or that he benched your personal favourite player, it's been interesting and surprising to watch the knives come out only a few months removed from the guy taking us to the Western Conference Final. Do I get it? Not even a little bit. I also walked through what has been another rough week for the Oilers as the team continues to struggle with consistency. From there, I welcomed Nick Alberga to the podcast to talk about what it's been like to join The Nation Network after years of working in traditional media. Are we too relaxed? Does he need more structure? An avid hockey fan and longtime Toronto media member, I also asked Nick about our boy Jack Campbell and whether or not we should also be expecting this kind of emotional rollercoaster with the guy when he's not playing well. As you'll hear, Nick did not pull any punches in his answer. Wrapping up the interview, Nick and I looked around the NHL at some of the more interesting storylines that are not getting enough play right now, including the wild run the Seattle Kraken are on and how they're looking too much like early Vegas for my liking. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week in your life.

14 Dec 2022Leon Draisaitl owns Nashville, Evander Kane's kindness, and living in Leduc01:22:25

You've passed the midway point of your work week and that means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is recorded, edited, and ready to help you make it to the weekend. This week, we're looking at Leon Draisaitl's dominance over the Nashville Predators, Evander Kane's generosity, and how someone might confuse Leduc for Edmonton.

To kick off the podcast, I got started with a look at a Toronto Life article that took the Internet by storm after a Mississauga woman told a story of moving to "Edmonton" and hating it even though she wasn't actually living in the city at all. Even though the article itself was hilarious, what was most fascinating was how everyone in Alberta united to rip this story to shreds. Getting back to the Oilers, I broke down the week that was after the boys went 3-1 in the week since my last episode. As you'll hear in the breakdown, a big part of that success was the Oilers finding their scoring touch again as they scored 21 goals while allowing only nine. Unsurprisingly, the big boys led the charge offensively — they put on a clinic against Nashville — but there were also some very important contributions from throughout the lineup that came at a time when we desperately needed them. With all that positivity out of the way, I dove into this week's Righteous Sack Beating and aired out my grievances along with some of yours in what was a very spicy podcast segment. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week in your life.

20 Dec 2022Stuart Skinner contract reaction episode00:16:50

With news breaking this morning that the Oilers had signed Stuart Skinner to a three-year contract extension, I figured I may as well settle into my home studio and bang out a quick reaction episode of the podcast.

For the first couple of months of the year, we’ve been marveling at how well Stuart Skinner has played for this hockey team, and how we're so lucky to have him while Jack Campbell works on his game. Well, as it turns out, Ken Holland and his staff clearly felt like they needed to show Stu some love for his work as the team announced earlier today that they had signed the local boy to a three-year contract extension that carries a $2.6 million AAV. While many of us were hoping to see Skinner extended sooner or later, I'm not sure that many of us expected a new contract to land this soon. Regardless of the timing, I could not be happier about Skinner's new deal, which is why I decided to do an emergency episode of Better Lait Than Never to express my happiness. I dove into it all on this quick reaction episode of Better Lait Than Never.

23 Dec 2022A Baggedmilk Christmas Extravaganza01:17:48

We're a day late with the new episode of Better Lait Than Never, but that doesn't mean I've forgotten about you. This week, we've got a whole lot of Christmas talk along with my usual breakdown of what's been happening with our beloved Edmonton Oilers.

To kick off this week's podcast, I got started with my question of the week which revolved around the best and worst Christmas gifts you've ever received after a memory jarred loose of a horrible present I gave my dad as a teenager. Not only was I incredibly dumb to buy this specific gift in the first place, and I wanted to know if any of the listeners had ever been on the receiving end of such stupidity. Sticking with the Christmas theme, I also ran through some of the worst Christmas songs ever recorded and offered my take on some year traditions that should be put to sleep. Turning the podcast towards the Oilers, I looked at what's happened in the week since my last full episode of BLTN and how it was a very frustrating week considering how much good could have happened in the standings had they won. From there, I spent the next few minutes talking about the Oilers, specifically how my boy Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is on fire right now and how there's not one person in this city that isn't thrilled for him. I also had to comment on the ridiculous story that came out this week that Salt Bae has been banned from future soccer tournaments after the meme-famous chef acted like a total dick after Argentina's win at the World Cup. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week in your life.

28 Dec 2022The Biggest Oilers Stories of 2022 with Tyler Yaremchuk01:05:26

As the 2022 winds down, I thought it might be fun to walk through some of the biggest Edmonton Oilers stories of the year as determined by the traffic on Oilersnation.com, and as I was putting together the list, I realized just how crazy these past 12 months have been. That's why I invited Tyler Yaremchuk on the podcast to help me break down these stories and wrap up the year with our hopes for 2023.

To kick off the year-end wrap up, Tyler and I got started with a look back on the trades that have happened for the Oilers this past season, and even though there weren't many of them, just five in total, there's little doubt that Ken Holland got some important work done in terms of shaping this roster. For better or worse, Ken Holland's patience with this roster has given us a rollercoaster year and it was interesting to look back on what he's done so far and what still needs to be done as we work our way into the back half of the 2022-23 campaign. We also checked in on a bunch of rumours and names that the Oilers have been tied to over the past 12 months and how the Oilers may actually be better off not making some of the moves that were supposed to get done. How could we look back at 2022 without diving into some of the negatives we suffered as well, including the 'why are you so pissy' exchange between Jim Matheson and Leon Draisaitl, Dave Tippett being fired and replaced with Jay Woodcroft, and the horrible stretch of games that led to the coaching change in the first place. Mixed in with all of the news from the site were a few of my favourite Baggedmilk and Tyler moments as the two of us continue to have a blast together while making a tonne of content while we were at it, and it was funny to see Tyler give his version of the stories we shared that he didn't know were coming. Lastly, I wrapped up the 2022 year in review with a message of thanks to everyone that has helped me grow this podcast in its first year, and how grateful I am to have the numbers climbing while having so much fun in the process.

05 Jan 2023New Year's Resolutions and trying to fix the Edmonton Oilers00:45:46

It's Wednesday night and that means a new episode of Better Lait Than Never is all set and ready for your ear holes. This week, I'm talking a whole lot of Edmonton Oilers as the boys continue to spin their wheels despite working through a list of winnable games.

To kick off this week's podcast, I got started with a look at New Year's Resolutions and specifically how I think they're a waste of time unless you've successfully worked with the concept before. Otherwise, aren't you just putting a bunch of pressure on yourself to make a life change that you've been able to do before? Why do you need a new calendar year to start working on your goals? From there, I looked at what the hell has been going on around here over the last few weeks as the Edmonton Oilers just can't seem to turn this ship around. Whether it's shooting themselves in the foot with blown leads at home or straight-up losing to teams that they should beat more often than not, the Oilers are running out of time if they plan to turn this season around and it's starting to drive me nuts. With some tough games coming up on the schedule, the boys need to figure themselves out quickly or we'll be talking about another lost season in year eight of Connor McDavid's career. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week.

11 Jan 2023Staying positive by avoiding Oilers talk with Liam Horrobin01:52:31

It's Wednesday night, so your favourite podcast is back with a brand new episode filled with your usual dose of Oilers-related nonsense to help you get through the rest of the week.

To kick off this week's podcast, I got started with a few minutes spent gushing about how excited I am for the third #NationVacation to Las Vegas that's kicking off tomorrow. Seeing as we'll have a crew of about 50 people flying down with us and even more expected to meet us while we're down there, this trip to Las Vegas has me more excited about the next few days than I could have imagined. It wasn't all good news for me this week, however, as Twitter took away my blue checkmark after I stopped paying for a subscription. Turning the podcast back towards the Oilers, I ran through the latest news with the team and dove into some of the rumours that are popping up around Twitter as the team is basically tied to every defenceman under the sun right now. From there, I welcomed my guy, Liam Horrobin, to the podcast to talk about literally anything other than what's happening with the Oilers right now, and specifically what he's expecting from his first-ever Nation Vacation. For a guy that hasn't really been around for a long time, Liam's impact on the Nation has been immediate and I wanted to ask him what it's been like to work through his first year(ish) with the company. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week.

14 Jan 2023The Gang Goes to Vegas00:32:28

In the days leading up to our #NationVacation to Las Vegas, hearing the excitement building up a Nation HQ gave me the idea to record a bonus episode of Better Lait Than Never with the crew because I knew there would be some nonsense stories to tell. As expected, I was right.

On Monday afternoons, we hold content meetings at Nation HQ and this past meeting was all about what kind of content we would be making once the crew landed in Vegas. With a plan in our pockets and dreams of payouts in our hearts, we hopped on a plane and made our way to Sin City. Outside of getting a bunch of work done, the viewing party, and going to the game, we didn’t really have too much planned which left ample time for shenanigans. And seeing as this is some people’s (read: Woz’s) first time to Las Vegas, I knew there would be some ridiculous stories to share on a bonus episode of Better Lait Than Never. With that in mind, I packed the hotel room with people and we started talking about everything that’s gone down so far. Was there Oilers talk? A little bit, but the focus of today’s episode was all about what the crew has been getting up to, what everyone is working on, and whatever else we could think of for this bonus episode of Better Lait Than Never.

19 Jan 2023#NationVacation recap, Kane is back, and the Edmonton Oilers are buzzin'00:52:56

We all made it back from the #NationVacation to Las Vegas in one piece, and now it's time to get back to business with a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never. On this week's podcast, I'm talking about Vegas, Evander Kane, Jesse Puljujarvi, and how much of a difference a week can make.

To kick off the show, I spent the first few minutes recapping what was undoubtedly an amazing #NationVacation down to Las Vegas with a group of really incredible people. But since we did an on-location show on Saturday afternoon, I didn't want to spend too much time saying the same things over and over again. The point here was just to say thank you to everyone that makes these trips so special, and I cannot wait until March when we head to Toronto with another fantastic crew. Changing gears, how could I not spend a few minutes talking about MILF Manor, which could be the greatest TV concept of all time. That's not to say that the show isn't without its issues, but dammit did I ever laugh as I was watching the first episode. Getting back to the Oilers, it's pretty amazing how much can change in a week as the team not only saw Evander Kane return to the lineup but they also rattled off four straight wins against Pacific Division opponents. Sure, you can say that Anaheim and San Jose are terrible — we all know that's the case — but to also come up with big efforts against Vegas and Seattle should be celebrated. I also touched on the latest roster news that's happened over the past couple of days as the team had to make a flurry of moves to be able to fit Kane in under the cap. We also saw Jesse Puljujarvi get healthy scratched last night, which kicked off a hornet's nest on social media after Tyler broke the news on Twitter. Is this the beginning of the end for the Bison King? I covered this and more in the latest episode of the podcast.

25 Jan 2023These are the Edmonton Oilers we expected them to be00:51:06

Happy Wednesday, friends, and welcome to a brand new episode of Better Lait Than Never to recap the week so far, preview what's ahead, and sprinkle a little bit of nonsense into your week. This week, we're looking at the Oilers' six-game winning streak, what to expect at the trade deadline, the all-star break, and a whole lot more.

To kick off this week's podcast, I got started with another look at the greatest TV show in the history of cameras. Of course, I'm talking about MILF Manor, the show that some are calling the grossest piece of television ever made. I also spent some time talking about the Jasper Pond Hockey Tournament that's set to take place at the beautiful Jasper Park Lodge this weekend, and how excited I am to be going back even though the weather could be taking a turn for tundra town. Switching gears to our beloved Edmonton Oilers, I dove into the six-game win streak and just how impressive the team has looked over this stretch. I mean, we all knew the ability was in there, but after a very mediocre first half to the season, we're finally seeing the Oilers playing up to their potential. Can they keep this run going given their schedule over the next few weeks? I also touched on some of the latest news surrounding the team, and how that may affect what Ken Holland does at the trade deadline. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week. Want to leave a voicemail for next week’s show? Do it here!

02 Feb 2023Matt Berlin's big night, Jesse Puljujarvi Rumours, and a Pond Hockey recap01:02:46

Another Wednesday has landed on your calendars, which means I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never to help fill the rest of your week with a little dose of shenanigans. This week, I'm recapping the amazing Jasper Pond Hockey Tournament, Matt Berlin's night to remember, Oilers trade rumours, and a whole lot more

To kick off this week's podcast, I got started with a quick look at episode 3 of the greatest TV show in the history of cameras. Of course, I'm talking about MILF Manor, the show where eight moms are looking for love in a dating pool comprised of their own sons. I also spent some time talking about the Jasper Pond Hockey Tournament that took place at the beautiful Jasper Park Lodge this past weekend, and how much fun we had with not only the other participants but also the folks from Flamesnation. Getting back to the Oilers, how could I not talk about the amazing Matt Berlin story that happened on Saturday night against the Blackhawks after the U of A netminder subbed in for Jack Campbell for the final 2:26 of that hockey game? As far as cool stories go, this one ranks right up there with one of the most fun sports moments that I've ever seen. But even though most of us loved the move by Jay Woodcroft and the Oilers, there were plenty of angry folks on hockey Twitter trying to rain on our parade. Sticking with the Oilers, I also ran through some of the latest rumblings surrounding Jesse Puljujarvi and how it truly feels like the countdown clock is on for his time with the organization. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week.

08 Feb 2023The Stretch Drive, Trade Rumours, and winning the Pacific Division00:48:26

How happy were you last night when the Oilers finally faced off against Detroit after a 10-day break? Probably 12/10 happy, right? Me too.

To kick off this week's podcast, I got started with a quick recap of the latest episode of MILF Manor. Why? Because I'm committed to the bit at this point and I need to stick with it. Not to mention, this show is a masterpiece and if you're not watching it yet then I encourage you to reevaluate your life. Back to the Oilers, we're right in the thick of the silly szn and that means there are rumours aplenty around this team right now, so I walked through some of the latest rumblings to try and make sense of what's happening. Seeing as last week's episode of the podcast kicked the hornet's nest a little bit, I feel even more bullish on the information I have, especially with Ken Holland admitting that he's got some tough decisions to make if Yamamoto comes off the LTIR in the next few days. And seeing as Kailer Yamamoto is traveling with the team and taking normal reps at practice, you'd have to think that he'll be back in the lineup sooner than later. On the more annoying side, I took umbrage with the fact that a bunch of Detroit Red Wings players were acting like real tough guys when the linesmen were around even though it was obvious they didn't want any of the Oilers' smoke. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week.

15 Feb 2023Erik Karlsson, Patrick Kane, and the finest Silly Szn rumours you could hope for01:06:51

It's Wednesday afternoon and that can only mean one thing — a brand new episode of Better Lait Than Never, your mom's favourite podcast. This week, I'm talking about all of the silly szn rumours that are surrounding the Oilers right now, the fact that Jesse Puljujarvi is still here, the Super Bowl, and a whole lot more.

To kick off this week's podcast, I got started with a quick look at the Oilersnation 15th Anniversary party that will be happening on March 18th at the Pint Downtown. As much fun as we've had over the years, it's crazy to think that the Nation is already turning 15 seeing as it doesn't really feel like we've been doing this that long. Then again, when I walk into Nation HQ these days, it's wild to see how many people actually work for this company now. Moving the podcast back to sports, I spent the next 10 minutes or so talking about all of the rumours surrounding the Oilers right now, including their reported interest in Erik Karlsson. Even though having Karlsson in blue and orange seems like a whole lot of fun, I have a hard time believing a deal like this will actually happen, ya know? Same goes for the thought of bringing in Patrick Kane to take our top-end offence from a Ferrari to a fighter jet. I also touched on the oddness of the Kailer Yamamoto situation as we all expected him to be activated from the LTIR yesterday only to have the deadline come and go without activity. Is there a trade in the works? As Tom Petty once said, "the waiting is the hardest part." Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week.

23 Feb 2023The Year of Nuge, McDavid and Draisaitl milestones, and the NHL trade deadline01:22:13

We've officially passed the midway point of the week and that means I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never to help break down what's happened so far and what's yet to come. This week, I'm looking at the Oilers' struggles in overtime, the Dynamic Duo's latest milestones, the Year of Nuge, and a whole lot more.

To kick off this week's episode of Better Lait Than Never, I got started with a look at life in Edmonton, specifically how we're working through another tundra week here in the capital city with temperatures plummeting through the floor. On the brighter side, however, we're also inching closer to the Oilersnation 15th Birthday party, and that has me endlessly excited for what is sure to be a wonderful afternoon with the Nation at the Pint Downtown. Getting back to the Oilers, I started off with the good news after Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins all registered milestones in last night's win over the Philadelphia Flyers, and how it's so much fun to watch them do their thing together. And since all three of those guys are having such amazing years, it's almost impossible to understand how they're still spinning their tires in the standings. That led me to talk about the four-game losing streak that was basically the Oilers' own fault as they simply could not close out games to save their lives. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week.

28 Feb 2023Emergency Episode: Jesse Puljujarvi trade reaction00:16:34

After months and months of speculation, the Edmonton Oilers have finally pulled the trigger on a trade that sent Jesse Puljujarvi to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Patrik Puistola. While the trade is no doubt a bittersweet transaction for many Oilers fans, there's little doubt that Puljujarvi needed a fresh start after spinning his wheels here in Edmonton a little bit. In exchange for Puljujarvi, the Oilers are getting another young Finn in Patrik Puistola who is said to have some offensive skill even though he has yet to plan an NHL game. From an Oilers perspective, the big win in this trade is the fact that they didn't have to retain any salary on the transaction, which essentially clears the path to make another deal ahead of Friday's deadline. Could this be the first step in a Jakob Chychrun or Mattias Ekholm trade, as an example? What will happen with the depth on the right side of the depth chart now that the Oilers are down a man in a spot where they already lack depth.

01 Mar 2023Emergency Episode: Mattias Ekholm for Tyson Barrie+ Trade Reaction00:18:34

Two trade reaction episodes of Better Lait Than Never on the same day? It's happening, folks! What a time to be alive.

If you missed it — and Gord knows how I don't even know how that would be possible — the Oilers traded Tyson Barrie, Reid Schaefer, a 1st round pick (2023), and a 4th round pick (2023) in exchange for Mattias Ekholm (4% retained) and a 6th round pick in 2024. Needless to say, this was a monster deal. And while I absolutely love the addition of Mattias Ekholm and what he brings to the table, the Oilers paid a significant price to acquire him and his $6 million AAV for the next three seasons. Was it worth the cost? Are the Oilers better today than they were yesterday?

In Ekholm, the Oilers get a big, tough defenceman that can play at both ends of the rink and will help them solidify what's happening in their own zone. Put another way, that's pretty much the exact definition of what we need right now. But as much as there is plenty to like about bringing Ekholm to town, the cost to acquire him was significant as the Oilers needed to send Tyson Barrie, Reid Schaefer, and a pair of draft picks (1st and 4th) to Nashville to make the deal (and money) work. On an asset level, this trade is a monster for the Oilers but one that ultimately satisfies a need they have on the roster. On a human level, however, I wonder what the players in the room are thinking as one of the most popular players on the team has been sent away.

01 Mar 2023Everything is Happening01:04:23

It's been a very busy week for the Edmonton Oilers, and that means you had a whole lot to say after Ken Holland pulled the trigger on a pair of moves yesterday with more likely on the way. As a result, today's episode of Better Lait Than Never is all about your feedback, including some guest Righteous Sack Beatings and a whole lot of voicemails.

To kick off the regularly scheduled episode of BLTN, I got started with a look at what's happened so far as the Edmonton Oilers pulled off a pair of trades on Tuesday that led me to record a pair of emergency podcasts for both Jesse Puljujarvi and Mattias Ekholm/Tyson Barrie. Seeing as those two trades basically took over the city, why not spend some more time talking about it? From there, I looked ahead and what's coming next as Frank Seravalli believes the Oilers have at least another trade or two coming down the pipeline. If there are more moves to be made, who could be next to leave? What are the biggest needs we have right now? All I know for sure is that the next couple of days are going to get spicy around the NHL, and I cannot wait to see what happens over the next two days. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week.

03 Mar 2023Emergency Podcast: Nick Bjugstad trade reaction and Tyson Barrie videos that bummed me out00:15:40

Why wouldn't I knock out a 15-minute podcast about the Oilers trading for Nick Bjugstad? Four episodes of Better Lait Than Never in a week? What a time to be alive.

This afternoon, the Edmonton Oilers announced that they had traded a 3rd round pick and Michael Kesselring to the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for Nick Bjugstad with 50% of his salary retained, bringing the gigantic human into town for only $450,000. That number was important because it brings the Oilers to a salary cap position where they don't even have one extra dollar to spend. According to the folks at CapFriendly, the moves Ken Holland made for Ekholm and Bjugstad left the Oilers with $0 under the cap. For someone that is horrible at math, I find what the cap squad at the OEG offices was able to do to be amazing. Just me?

In other news, I saw a couple of videos of Tyson Barrie on the Nashville Predators' social media that bummed me out because I know it had to be a jolt to the system for the guy to be traded away from a team where he had so many friends. I know that the NHL is a business and that professional sports are ruthless in general, but you can't help but feel for a guy that was probably pretty sad to get moved. Anyway, back to the video Nashville posted, it showed Barrie meeting some of his teammates as they were eating or something, and the way it was put together made the whole thing feel awkward. Made me feel bad for Barrie, ya know?

09 Mar 2023A tight race in the Pacific Division and Stuart Skinner's time to shine00:58:03

We've passed the midway point of the week, and that means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is here to help you get through the rest of the week and to make sense of the world around you. This week, I'm looking at the Oilers' situation between the pipes, the Pacific Division standings, first impressions of the new guys, and a whole lot more.

To kick off this week's episode of BLTN, I got started with some first impressions on the new guys as both Mattias Ekholm and Nick Bjugstad have found a way to make an impact in their first few games. While both guys have extremely different roles and expectations, both Ekholm and Bjugstad are finding ways to contribute early in their tenure as Oilers and it's been refreshing to see both guys having a little bit of success. At the other end of the spectrum, Jack Campbell continues to struggle between the pipes and it's getting to a spot where we don't even know when or how often he can even be played anymore this year. And while I'm not one to suggest that the Oilers buy him out, you do have to wonder when or if he'll be able to get back to his career norms in terms of numbers. From there, I ran through the Pacific Division standings which are tight as ever with fewer than 20 games left to play. To make matters even more intense, the teams the Oilers are chasing in the standings just keep winning. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week.

15 Mar 2023The Year of Nuge, McDavid stays on fire, and Draisaitl hits 100 again01:08:32

We've passed the midway point of the week, and that means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is here to help you get through the rest of the week and to make sense of the world around you. This week, I'm gushing about Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, recapping the #NationVacation to Toronto, thinking back on the first 15 years of Oilersnation, and a whole lot more.

To kick off this week's episode of Better Lait Than Never, I got started with a quick recap of this past weekend's #NationVacation to Toronto and how it was an incredible trip despite the lack of success on the ice. Even with some delays that were beyond our control, Nation Citizens always seem to find a way to make the best of any situation that's thrown their way. Speaking of which, I also had to spend a few minutes talking about how excited I am for the Oilersnation 15th Birthday party that is now SOLD OUT thanks to all of your amazing support. Needless to say, I'm pumped for his Saturday. Getting back to the Oilers, how could I not start with the news that broke this morning about my guy, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, expecting a baby in August? Given the way his season has gone so far — we're talking about career highs in every single category that matters — why should we be surprised that he's also getting some major business done off the ice as well? With my RNH gushing out of the way, I looked at the ridiculous years that both Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are having as both guys hit different milestones in last night's game against the Sens. And with only 14 games left to play this season, the pressure is on for the big boys to keep playing at the highest level possible to ensure that the Oilers are not only in the dance but playing the best they can when they get there. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week.

23 Mar 2023Connor McDavid hits 60 goals, love for Mattias Ekholm, and Jeremy Coupal00:55:21

It's Wednesday afternoon and that means I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never all set and ready to guide you through the back half of your week. In this week's episode, I'm looking at McDavid scoring 60, the Oilers' current winning streak, Zach Hyman's ridiculous run of goals called back, gushed about Mattias Ekholm, and a whole lot more.

To kick off the podcast, I got started with a thank you to everyone that attended the Oilersnation 15th birthday party this past weekend at the Pint Downtown. Not only was it a fantastic way to spend a Saturday, but the support we got from all of you is something that I won't soon forget. It was the kind of day that made us all so incredibly happy because of the incredible support, and I couldn't possibly think of a better group to spend that time with. Getting back to the Oilers, how could I not touch on Connor McDavid hitting the 60-goal mark in last night's win over the Arizona Coyotes? No matter how you slice it, McDavid is the best player on earth and it's not particularly close. Next up, the team announced that it had signed college free agent, Carl Berglund, to a two-year entry-level deal early today so I tried to figure out what the hell we've got here in our new friend. From there, I looked at the upcoming schedule and how there are some big games on deck for the Oilers if they have any hopes of climbing into one of the top-two positions in the Pacific Division. And since we're in a spot in the season where news really slows down, I spent the rest of the segment digging into what's been happening with the group over the last week while also checking in on some old friends that recently left town. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week.

29 Mar 2023Nuge chases 100 points, the Pacific Division, and a brand new Tyler song00:57:05

It's Wednesday afternoon and that means I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never set and ready to guide you through what's left of the week. In this week's episode, I looked at Ryan Nugent-Hopkins' pursuit of 100 points, the Oilers' chances at winning the Pacific Division, and debuted a brand new Tyler Yaremchuk song that you won't want to miss.

To kick off this week's episode of BLTN, I got started with a quick Frank update after so many of you reached out about how he was doing and with general letters of support. The support was fantastic in every way, and I was honestly blown away by how much all of you love my dog. From there, I dove into a brand new Tyler Yaremchuk song that Meat Watcher made this past week, and as you'll hear, this new tune is ridiculous. Getting back to the Oilers, I had to start the news with the ridiculous season that Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is having, and how it blows my mind that he's at 96 points with seven games left to go. No matter how you slice it, the guy is on fire and my body is here for it. Next up, I looked at both Leon Draisaitl and Evander Kane hitting the 300-goal plateau, and how it's almost stunning that Connor McDavid has yet to reach the milestone. Speaking of milestones, Darnell Nurse tied his career-high in both goals and points last night against Vegas and I wanted to give him a little bit of love for the year he's having despite people constantly shitting on him. From there, I quickly ran through the Pacific Division standings and spoke about how the Oilers finally got a break with the teams they're chasing as well as what that means down the stretch. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week.

05 Apr 2023Celebrating Clinchmas, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins' chases 100, and Leon Draisaitl00:48:52

It's Wednesday afternoon and that means I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never set and ready to guide you through what's left of the week. In this week's episode, I looked at Ryan Nugent-Hopkins being one point away from 100, Leon Draisaitl at 50 goals again, and celebrated Clinchmas for the fourth straight season.

To kick off this week's episode of BLTN, I got started with a quick Clinchmas celebration after the Oilers locked into their playoff spot last weekend against the Anaheim Ducks. Not only was that game a lot of fun to watch in person, but it was also the kind of performance you'd want to see from the Oilers against a team that poor. As a result, I actually expect the Ducks to push back a little bit harder in tonight's rematch, but at the same time, the result should still be the same even if the spread isn't six goals. Sticking with Saturday night, I also spent a few minutes talking about Leon Draisaitl reaching the 50-goal mark for the third time and how I happily threw one of my favourite hats to mark the occasion. Sticking with milestones, I then talked about how Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is only a single point away from the century mark and how I don't think I've ever been this excited about watching someone get there. Yeah, we've watched Connor and Leon hit 100 points a few times each now, but to have Nuge do it too? C'mon. I also wanted to give some love to both Stuart Skinner and Jack Campbell for picking up back-to-back shutouts against the Kings and Ducks respectively, giving the team its first two bagels of the season. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week.

12 Apr 2023Waiting for the playoffs is the hardest part01:01:49

It's Wednesday afternoon and that means I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never set and ready to guide you through what's left of the week. In this week's episode, I looked at the Oilers' eight-game win streak, still not knowing who we're going to play in round one, and celebrated Ryan Nugent-Hopkins' 30th birthday.

To kick off this week's episode of BLTN, I got started with a look at the Oilers' playoff situation as we still don't know who the boys will be playing in round one. While I have personal reasons why I hope the Oilers match up against the LA Kings, the reality is that they could just as easily be playing the Winnipeg Jets. Depending on what happens on Thursday, there are actually a few different ways this first round matchup could play out depending on who beats who and when they get the job done. Either way, no matter who the Oilers face in the first round, I'm beyond excited for the postseason to get going. Moving into the news, I got started with a shout out to my dude, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, as he played in his 800th game with the Edmonton Oilers in last night's victory over the Colorado Avalanche. Not only was I excited that we kept him forever, but the fact that Nuge hit the milestone only a day before his 30th birthday was also pretty remarkable. I mean, Nuge? 30 years old? Can't be. From there, I spent a few minutes banging the drum about Stuart Skinner being a deserving candidate for the Calder Trophy as his remarkable season is really the only reason we're talking about being Stanley Cup contenders. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week.

19 Apr 2023Getting the Oilers Back on Track00:53:30

It's Wednesday afternoon and that means I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never set and ready to guide you through what's left of the week. In this week's episode, we're talking about the Oilers' loss in Game 1, what the boys need to do better in Game 2, the NHL playoffs, and a whole lot more.

To kick off this week's episode of BLTN, I got started with a quick recap of how much fun it is for the Oilers to be back in the playoffs and how much fun I was having in the hours leading up to puck drop. From having out with the squad at the office to making my way down to the Moss Pit before the game, it just felt good to have the postseason back in our wonderful city. And for the first 40 minutes of that game, it looked like the day that started out so beautifully was going to wrap up in celebration. Unfortunately, the Hockey Gords had other plans. After what was a fantastic first 40 minutes by the Oilers, the boys collapsed in spectacular fashion and ended up losing Game 1 in overtime. With a massive opportunity to tie up the series coming up in a few hours, I then dove into what needs to happen for the Oilers to get the job done in Game 2 and tie the series before it heads back to Los Angeles. In this week's Righteous Sack Beating, I dove into the dummies that were throwing garbage on the ice after the OT winner and why acting like such a baby is so incredibly embarrassing. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week.

27 Apr 2023Oilers take the series lead, our trip to LA, and fans gone wild01:02:57

It's Wednesday afternoon and that means a brand new episode of Better Lait Than Never is here to help get you through the rest of your week. On today's episode, I'm recapping our trip to LA, breaking down the Oilers vs. Kings, and dolling out the usual dose of nonsense that you've come to expect from BTLN.

Kicking off the podcast, I got started with a quick look at our trip to Los Angeles from this past weekend after the fine folks at AMA Travel sent us on an adventure to cover the first round. Needless to say, those three days were an emotional rollercoaster that saw some of the highest of highs and lowest of lows with a little bit of rest and relaxation mixed in. One thing I can say for sure, however, is that I sure was glad that the Oilers found a way to pull off the miracle comeback in Game 4 because coming down 3-1 in the series could simply not happen. Coming back to Rogers Place for Game 5, the Oilers had the opportunity to give themselves their first lead of the series, and not only did they accomplish exactly that, but they also turned in what was arguably their best effort overall. In this week's Righteous Sack Beating, I dove into the Kings fan situation that kicked off on social media yesterday after Evander Kane posted a pretty horrendous story about what happened to young Cecily Eklund in Los Angeles. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week.

03 May 2023We're in Vegas for the start of Round 200:38:56

It's Wednesday, we just landed in Vegas, Game 1 is coming up in a little bit, and we figured it would be the perfect time to crank out an on-location episode of Better Lait Than Never.

I may not have my button bar, Satan voice filter, and normal music, but that doesn't mean I'm skipping the podcast because I'm in Vegas and pretty damned excited about it. With the Oilers set to kick off the second round against the Golden Knights, Tyler, Jay, and I made our way down for the festivities and the vibes could not be better. To kick off the podcast, we talked a little bit about how the fine folks at AMA Travel saved the day by moving our flights around after the NHL pulled a dink move and changed the schedule for Game 2. For a lot of Oilers fans, this schedule change was a complete disaster and to make it worse, it doesn't seem like anyone at the NHL really cares. Changing gears, we dove into vibes in Las Vegas after noticing Oilers jerseys popping up everywhere. Whether it was on our plane ride down, cruising the strip, or hitting up the casino floor, there is no doubt that T-Mobile Arena will have a lot more Edmonton fans than we saw in Los Angeles. We also walked through some of the bets we're putting down for night one and workshopped through a few potential plans now that we've got an extra day that we didn't expect. Needless to say, I love recording episodes of BLTN from the road and I think you'll be able to hear the excitement quite clearly in this week's episode.

10 May 2023Oilers need to rebound, reffing problems, and a look around the NHL00:41:12

It's Wednesday afternoon and that means I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never to recap what's been happening over the last week and what the hell is going on with our beloved Edmonton Oilers.

To kick off this week's podcast, I got started with a quick recap of our trip to Las Vegas and tried to cover some of the things we didn't touch on during Real Life or ONR. Given that we were there for five days, we got up to plenty of shenanigans but I figured it would be fun to give you an idea of what it's like for us to work on the road. Getting back to the Oilers, it was hard not to still feel annoyed and angry about the way things went on Monday night even though I'm pretty damned confident that the boys will be able to rebound in tonight's rematch. From there, I looked around the NHL at the other series that are going on, and it's honestly wild to see how lopsided these games (and sometimes series) have been. Are the Kraken legit? Will the Leafs get swept? So many questions need answers! Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week.

17 May 2023The early exit and what comes next for the Edmonton Oilers01:01:27

It's Wednesday afternoon and that means a brand new episode of Better Lait Than Never is posted and ready to recap the last week in Edmonton Oilers land with a healthy dose of randomness mixed in for good measure.

To kick off this week's podcast, I got started with a farewell to the playoffs after the Oilers got knocked out by Vegas in Game 6 of their second round series. While many of us were hopeful for another deep run, the reality is that the Oilers never did quite play up to their own standards against the Golden Knights, and that's simply not good enough when facing an opponent as strong as they were. That led me to dig into some of the exit interviews quotes that have popped up over the last 24 hours, including some notes from Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Ken Holland, and Jay Woodcroft. Even though I never expect to actually learn much during these exit interviews, I will say that it was nice to see so many of the Oilers feeling the exact same way we all do. Sticking with the vein of being disappointed, this week's Righteous Sack Beating dove into the wild overreactions we saw in the fanbase after the Oilers lost. As much as I love the passion we all share for this team and its players, the insane arguments we get in when things go wrong can be a little much. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week.

25 May 2023Time is long when the Oilers are out of the playoffs feat. David Quadrelli01:02:29

It's Wednesday afternoon and that means a brand new episode of Better Lait Than Never is ready to recap the last week in Edmonton Oilers land with a healthy dose of randomness mixed in to keep things light.

To kick off this week's podcast, I got started with a podcast confession that I haven't been watching any hockey at all after the Oilers got knocked out in the second round. So what have I been doing to occupy my time, you might be wondering? The answer is a whole lot of nonsense. Somehow, I've found myself locked in these random TikTok holes that range from Bonzai pruning to pressure-washing driveways, but at the same time, I'm enjoying these silly videos way more than anything the NHL playoffs have to offer. Getting back to hockey, I kicked off the news by wishing Mattias Ekholm a very happy 33rd birthday and celebrated by playing a hilarious clip from the interview he recently gave to Christine Simpson over at Sportsnet. From there, I dove into Frank Seravalli's Top 50 UFA list over at Daily Faceoff and tried to figure out if any of the names listed would be realistic fits for the Oilers based on their current needs and cap space. With some potential shopping out of the way, I finished up the news with a look at the GM news that came out of Toronto and Calgary, including the funny spat between Brendan Shanahan and Kyle Dubas. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another Righteous Sack Beating and a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week. 01 Jun 2023Ryan Nugent-Hopkins rumours, Jayden Grubbe, and your horrible food opinions01:05:02

It's Wednesday afternoon and that means a brand new episode of Better Lait Than Never is ready to recap the last week in Edmonton Oilers land with a healthy dose of randomness mixed in to keep you on your toes.

To kick off this week's podcast, I got started with a quick preview of my question of the week about people's unpopular food opinions, and let me tell you, this was easily one of my favourites that we've ever done. Frankly, some of the answers that came in on Twitter about people's food choices had me in stitches, and I could not wait to read a bunch of them out. Getting back to business, I got started the hockey talk with a look at the Ryan Nugent-Hopkins rumours that have been circulating this past week, and how I think it would be moronic for Edmonton to trade him even though I understand the logic of selling high. Sticking with the Oilers, the club got some minor business done this afternoon as they traded a 5th round pick to the New York Rangers in exchange for Jayden Grubbe before promptly signing the prospect to a three-year ELC ahead of tomorrow's June 1st deadline. They also signed defenceman, Phil Kemp, to a two-year contract extension earlier in the week as Ken Holland apparently accepts no days off early in the offseason. Next up, I quickly ran through the Stanley Cup Finals that are set to kick off on Saturday between the Vegas Golden Knights and Florida Panthers, a finale that could not be more uninteresting to me if the league actively tried. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another Righteous Sack Beating and a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week. Oh, and subscribe to my YouTube channel.

08 Jun 2023Oilers rumours, high school reunions, and my love of the silly season01:07:57

It's Wednesday afternoon, the sun is shining, rumours from around the NHL are starting to roll in, and that means I've got a whole lot to talk about on the brand new episode of Better Lait Than Never.

To kick off this week's podcast, I got started with a few stories from my 20-year high school reunion that happened this past weekend. Not only did we have a great time, but I would also argue that this was one of the drunkest nights I've had in quite some time. The result was that all of us felt like death for the next two days but I wouldn't change what happened for anything. That also led into this week's question of the week, which was "What are the best late night eats after a big drinking session." Of course, everyone came through with some fantastic answers and what I loved most was how varied all of our tastes seem to be when we're hammered. Getting back to hockey, I ran through some of the newest rumours that are circulating after the Ivan Provorov trade from yesterday, including someone out of Philly kicking a hornet's nest after he tied the Oilers to goaltender Carter Hart. Even though pretty much everyone in the know has suggested that the deal won't happen, that didn't stop Oiler fans from trying to figure out how to make this happen. I also touched on a quote from Oilers Now from earlier in the week after Elliotte Friedman suggested the Oilers could be more aggressive than some folks think. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another Righteous Sack Beating and a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week. Oh, and subscribe to my YouTube channel.

13 Jun 2023Derek Ryan contract reaction feat. Woz00:15:00

Why wouldn't I knock out a 15-minute podcast about the Oilers re-signing Derek Ryan to a two-year contract extension? Two episodes of Better Lait Than Never in a single week? What a time to be alive.

This afternoon, the Edmonton Oilers announced that they have re-signed Derek Ryan to a two-year contract extension that carries a $900K AAV. Now with two seasons with the Oil under his belt after bailing on the horrible Calgary Flames, Derek Ryan has established himself as a reliable piece in Edmonton's bottom six and it's not at all surprising to see that the team wanted him back. A veteran of 500 NHL games between three different clubs — he broke into the league in Carolina before moving on to Calgary and Edmonton respectively — Derek Ryan didn't break into the NHL until he was 30 years old, and the result is a player that never takes anything for granted.

Now that he's locked into a fresh two-year contract, the question for the Oilers is what else they plan on doing in their bottom six now one of those spots will (probably) be tied up by Ryan for the next year or two. Even though I'm happy to see Ryan coming back because I like the steady style he plays on a nightly basis, the thing I liked seeing was that he took a $325K haircut to make this deal happen. Seeing as the Oilers are pressed right up against the cap, bringing Ryan back on a cheaper deal than he was just on gives the team a (teeny tiny) shade more flexibility than they would have otherwise had as they bring back a known commodity that they can rely on while also saving a few sheckles in the process.

15 Jun 2023The Stanley Cup Finals are finally over, now bring on the trades01:05:09

It's Wednesday afternoon, it's a rainy day in the city, and the Stanley Cup Finals are finally over, which means I've got a whole lot to talk about on the brand new episode of Better Lait Than Never.

To kick off this week's podcast, I got started with a look at the news that shocked so many of us this morning after Bell Media announced that they had closed six stations across the country, including TSN 1260 here in Edmonton. While there's little doubt that the business world is a cold one, seeing people you admire losing their jobs so suddenly was a jarring way to start the day. On a brighter note, the Stanley Cup Finals wrapped up last night with the Golden Knights claiming their first championship in franchise history, and while some folks were focused on that, I was just happy that the postseason is over. As I mentioned last week, the only things I care about at this time of year with the Oilers out of the running are the rumours and trades that can happen now that the season is officially over.

Speaking of rumours, I looked at the last name circling Edmonton these days after a Philly writer linked Travis Konecny to the Oilers as a potential solution on the wing. According to Anthony Di Marco, the Oilers have interest in the 26-year-old winger and I completely get it after he put up 31 goals and 61 points through 60 games played on a horrible Flyers team. That said, landing a guy like that would be a very tall order for Ken Holland to pull off given the Oilers' cap situation so I guess we'll just have to wait and see how things play out. To wrap up the news, I spent the next few minutes running through some general NHL stories, including a look at some of the ridiculous injuries players were competing through as the playoffs wore on. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another Righteous Sack Beating and a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week. Oh, and subscribe to my YouTube channel.

21 Jun 2023More Silly Szn rumours, the Titanic sub, and is Connor Brown already an Oiler?01:28:18

You didn't think you were going to make it through your Wednesday without a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never, did you?

To kick off this week's episode of BLTN, I got started with the story that the entire internet seems to be talking about right now as the submarine that went to look at the Titanic is still missing. If you hadn't heard about this yet, I ran through what's happened so far, how much it cost to get on this thing, and how one of the passenger's stepsons is turning into a punchline online. From there, I wrapped up the intro to the podcast with a thank you to whoever it was that introduced me to the dating show, Love Island, which has to be one of the dumbest shows that I've watched in quite some time.

Getting back to the Oilers, I jumped into the news with a look at some of the latest rumours and names that the Oilers have been linked to this past week along with some updates on each from varying NHL insiders. I also looked at the 2023 Hockey Hall of Fame class that just got announced earlier this afternoon and how Alex Mogilny still can't seem to get his foot in the door for whatever reason. Changing gears again, I then complained about the price we all have to pay for Heritage Classic tickets as the NHL continues in its apparent quest to price most people out of being able to attend their events. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another Righteous Sack Beating and a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on what’s been going on over the last week. Oh, and subscribe to my YouTube channel.

28 Jun 2023Peak Silly Szn draws nearer00:54:49

Wednesday. A new episode of Better Lait Than Never. You can set your watch to it.

It's NHL Draft week and that means we're nearing the pinnacle of the silly szn festivities, and that means all kinds of action around the NHL that may or may not impact what happens here in Edmonton. This time of year can be both frustrating and exciting and every emotion in between, but the goodness is that we're all riding the wave together. No matter if the Oilers do nothing or everything, I know that we'll all be complaining about it as a team and there's comfort in that. With unity at the front of mind, I worked through what has been a crazy week in the NHL leading up to the draft with teams from all over the league pulling the trigger on trades both big and small. And while the Oilers haven't gotten anything done just yet, that doesn't mean that they weren't impacted at least a little bit by teams within the division getting in on some of this early activity. I also touched on the story everyone was talking about after the NHL Awards when it was revealed that Seth Rorabaugh from Pittsburgh had Connor McDavid ranked fifth on his least for league MVP. Outside of that strangeness, however, there wasn't a whole lot of action as the night seemed to go off without a hitch. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on the BLTN presidential election and what’s been going on over the last week. Oh, and subscribe to my YouTube channel.

30 Jun 2023Kailer Yamamoto and Klim Kostin trade reaction00:14:48

It's always a hard time day when fan favourites get traded and that's exactly what happened yesterday as the Edmonton Oilers traded Kailer Yamamoto and Klim Kostin to the Detroit Red Wings for future considerations.

With money being as tight as it is in Edmonton, it wasn't at all surprising to see Ken Holland trade Kailer Yamamoto as a means of saving some space. That said, I'm sure we would have all liked to see a return better than zero — yeah I know they gained the cap space but you know what I mean. To make matters worse, at least for some of us, it looks like the payment to have Detroit take Yamo off our hands was to include Klim Kostin, a fan favourite that came over from the St. Louis Blues only last year. While there were rumours that Kostin could have ended up back in Russia, I was always hoping that this was a bargaining tactic by his agent. Unfortunately, the Real Klim Shady is going to be a Red Wing for the foreseeable future and that hurts. As for Yamamoto, news broke this morning that he's being bought out by Detroit and will be hitting the open market when free agency kicks off tomorrow. With that in mind, I figured I would do a quick farewell to two of our favourites as we wait to see who comes in to replace them.

05 Jul 2023blink-182 forever, Connor Brown comes to town, and a free agency recap00:54:18

It wouldn't be Wednesday without your boy popping back up in your phone with a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never, would it? Of course not.

Kicking off this week's podcast, I got started with a quick story about seeing blink-182 at Rogers Place last week. If you've listened to any podcast I've ever been on over the years, chances are that you know how much I love that band so to see them again last week was a wonderful dose of nostalgia. Frankly, I was even tempted to jump in my whip and drive to Calgary for the next night's show. From there, I touched on the amazing work our staff got done at Nation HQ on Canada Day despite Twitter trying its best to throw a wrench in the day. Yet, despite no one being able to refresh their Twitter feed, that didn't stop NHL GMs from throwing piles of money around in free agency, and I spent the next few minutes walking through some of my winners and losers from the annual fishing derby. And given that the Edmonton Oilers had next to no cap space to get things done, I looked at what they were able to make happen — Connor Brown, come on down — and what else still needs to get done. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on the BLTN presidential election and what’s been going on over the last week. Oh, and subscribe to my YouTube channel.

12 Jul 2023Are the Oilers basically done with their roster?01:03:47

It wouldn't be Wednesday without your ol' chum, Baggedmilk, popping up in your phone with a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never, would it? Of course not.

Kicking off this week's podcast, I got started with a quick recap from the Nation staff night we had at the Riverhawks game on Friday, and specifically how it's so much fun to work with a group of people that also enjoys hanging out together. From the shenanigans in our suite to Tyler getting folks fired up on the big screen, we had a blast as a team and I wanted to give a shout out to all of the staff at Nation HQ for making it so much fun. I then talked about tomorrow's homerun derby that we'll be having at RE/MAX Field. I know that bit is a Real Life thing, but I'm so excited about spending my morning at the ballpark that I had to talk about it for a few minutes.

Getting back to the Oilers, I spent some time on the Ryan McLeod contract situation as he's now only a couple of weeks away from his arbitration date. While I still think both sides will be able to get something done before then, it is slightly worrisome that we don't yet have any clarity on what the Oilers' cap situation might look like heading into next season. With a lack of cap space in mind, I wondered if Ken Holland is done tinkering with the roster not because he wants to be but rather because he literally cannot spend anything else. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on the BLTN presidential election and what’s been going on over the last week. Oh, and subscribe to my YouTube channel.

21 Jul 2023Summer Livin' in the Y-E-G01:08:59

I'm a day late with the podcast but the good news is that I titled my show appropriately for such delays.

Kicking off the podcast, I got started with an ode to summer in Edmonton. Personally, I don't think there's anywhere I would rather be than here when the sun is out, the days are long, and the list of things to do grows by the day. This past week was another busy one for your boy as I took in yet another Riverhawks game on Tuesday night before hitting up the Volbeat concert at Rogers Place last night. When the season ended, I challenged myself to do more things around the city and I think I've done a pretty good job of getting that done so far. Changing gears, the only Oilers news stories worth talking about this week were Raphael Lavoie accepting his qualifying offer and Jeremy Coupal parting ways with the organization after basically becoming a folk hero around here. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on the BLTN presidential election and what’s been going on over the last week. Oh, and subscribe to my YouTube channel.

27 Jul 2023The Darnell Nurse blame game and waiting on Ryan McLeod01:27:34

We've past the midway point of the work week and that means another episode of Better Lait Than Never is on deck and ready to pleasure your earholes. Okay, so maybe that sounds grosser than I meant, but I'm still excited about a new podcast episode anyway.

Kicking off this week's podcast, I got started with a scary story from Monday night regarding my dog, Frank, and a late night trip to the emergency vet. As you'll hear, what happened to my dude was pretty damned scary for me but the good news is that he's bouncing right back and will be okay in no time. Changing gears entirely, I started the news with a look at the Darnell Nurse quotes that were making the rounds from earlier this week after he jumped on Luke Gazdic's podcast and they were talking about dealing with pressure. Ironically, having Nurse joking about people getting mad at him for the traffic on Stony Plain Road had people getting angry at him, but that's the way things go in Edmonton sometimes. I also did another run through on the Ryan McLeod contract situation as Frank Seravalli said this past week on the DFO Rundown that the team and player are still quite a ways apart on the next deal. Changing gears entirely, I jumped into the Question of the Week that revolved around a list of the most hated fast food places in the country. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on the BLTN presidential election and what’s been going on over the last week. Oh, and subscribe to my YouTube channel.

02 Aug 2023Ryan McLeod contract reaction episode00:12:38

How about a little Ryan McLeod contract news to spice up your Tuesday night? Two years at $2.1 million? I dig it.

After what feels like years of talking about whether or not this Ryan McLeod contract situation would head to arbitration or not, Ryan Rishaug broke the news on Tuesday night that the team and player have agreed to a two-year contract extension. And at $2.1 million for the next couple of seasons, my first reaction was that this is a solid deal for both parties. Even though we had heard rumblings over the last week or so that Mcleod could be heading to arbitration to maximize his contract, I was pumped to see that they avoided the situation all together by finding some middle ground. In this quick, 10-minute reaction episode of BLTN, I looked at Ryan McLeod's career so far, this new contract, and read your feedback on what you think of this two-year extension. Oh, and subscribe to my YouTube channel.

02 Aug 2023Ryan McLeod's deal is done, now it's onto Evan Bouchard01:12:25

Did you think that just because I released a podcast last night for Ryan McLeod's contract I wasn't going to give you the normal Wednesday episode? Nonsense, I say. We've passed the midway point of the week and that means it's time for a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never.

Kicking off this week's podcast, I got started with a quick Frank update after so many of you reached out about last week's show, wondering how my little man is doing after the scare from last Monday. The good news is that he's bounced back quickly, but that's not to say that there weren't still some speedbumps along the way. I also handled my end of the bet I made with Dooks regarding the outcome of the Canada/Australia game at the Women's World Cup after our ladies ended up getting shut out by a 4-0 score. Getting back to the Oilers, I spent a few more minutes on the Ryan McLeod signing and how it relates to what comes next with Evan Bouchard. Obviously, getting Dad locked in is the next item on Ken Holland's to-do list, but what makes the contract especially interesting is how it will affect whether the Oilers are able to ice a 22 or 21-man roster. Needless to say, it would be nice to have an extra or two if things go wrong, ya know? Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on the BLTN presidential election and what’s been going on over the last week. Oh, and subscribe to my YouTube channel.

09 Aug 2023All hail Jeff Jackson, waiting on Evan Bouchard, and the Dynamic Duo00:59:29

It's Wednesday and that means I've got a new episode of Better Lait Than Never. Are you excited? Of course you are.

Kicking off this week's podcast, I got started with a look back at the long weekend. On Friday night, I made my way to Rogers Place to check out Alexisonfire and Avenged Sevenfold for what ended up being one of my favourite shows that I've ever attended. From start to finish, that concert made for one of the best nights ever and I had to talk about it. I also had to talk about my boy Tyler's tweet from last night where he said he would be going to the Elks game while completely ignoring the fact that I tried to invite myself only to get shot down. It just hurts, ya know?

Turning the show toward the Oilers, I got started on the Jeff Jackson news after Connor McDavid's agent was named CEO of Hockey Operations, effectively replacing Bob Nicholson at the top of the org chart. I also looked at the Brandon Sutter PTO that was announced yesterday and how I love bringing guys in on tryouts to add competition to the bottom portions of the lineup. Gone are the days of gifting people spots on the roster, and I can only hope that more names are added to the PTO list as the off-season rolls on. And while the team's housekeeping efforts continue, we're still waiting on news about Evan Bouchard who is one of the last pieces of the puzzle to get done. In down-the-line extension news, Frank Seravalli had another beautiful comment on the DFO Rundown about Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl sticking around that I absolutely had to share because it's just so wonderful to hear. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on the BLTN presidential election and what’s been going on over the last week.

15 Aug 2023Sports 1440 announcement, and Tyler and Baggedmilk do Vancouver00:31:18

Who doesn't love an impromptu episode of Better Lait Than Never to wrap up your Monday? What a time to be alive, friends.

Kicking off the emergency episode of Better Lait Than Never, Tyler Yaremchuk and I walked through this morning's announcement regarding the return of sports radio to the capital region. In case you missed it, we announced a massive partnership for The Nation Network this morning that will see Jason Gregor bring sports radio back to your AM dial starting on September 5th. Not only will The Jason Gregor Show be coming back to radio as you've always known, but we've also got an entire stable of programming that kicks off with The Kevin Karius Show at 7 AM. Needless to say, this is a massive deal for The Nation Network and one that we couldn't be more proud to finally announce.

From there, Tyler and I recapped the start of our trip to Vancouver where we'll be trying to get a little bit more business done. I know there's nothing more annoying than a cryptic tease like that, but we're hoping to have another announcement locked in sooner than later. We also talked about how we almost missed our flight to Vancouver because we spent too much time drinking at the airport Chili's. Being the last two on the plane doesn't make us dicks, does it? Either way, we wanted to knock out a quick podcast to walk through what was a very cool day for the network while also giving a little teaser on what's yet to come. Can you figure it out?

16 Aug 2023I'm a Bocce Ball champ, Sam Gagner PTO rumours, and a whole lotta voicemail00:52:50

It's Wednesday and that means I've got a new episode of Better Lait Than Never. Are you excited? Of course you are.

Kicking things off, I started the podcast with a recap of what was left of our trip to Vancouver after Tyler and I recorded the Monday episode of BLTN. After we wrapped up that quick episode, we met up with Jay and Sales Guy Jarrod for some dinner and some shenanigans and the results were hilarious. We also met up with some of the boys from Canucksarmy for lunch and a little bit of business talk, but the thing that everyone noticed was that Quads was apparently sucking up to Jay despite his arguments that he did not mean it. After I run through the story, I'd love to hear everyone's take on whether or not you think he did it on purpose.

Turning the podcast back toward the Oilers, I looked at the Sam Gagner PTO rumours that are circling the city right now and tried to figure out whether or not this is actually a good idea. Obviously, I love the story of Gagner coming back for a third time, but is that even a realistic option for the team given its current cap constraints? I also checked in on the Evan Bouchard contract as we still don't have any news about where they're at apart from hearing a few local media folks saying they're close. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on the BLTN presidential election and what’s been going on over the last week. Oh, and subscribe to my YouTube channel.

23 Aug 2023Evan Bouchard contract reaction episode00:14:13

I know I've got the normal Wednesday show coming up in a few hours, but how could I not fire up the Rodecaster for a quick reaction episode of Better Lait Than Never to talk about the new Evan Bouchard contract?

After what feels like an eternity of waiting, the Edmonton Oilers and Evan Bouchard have reportedly come to terms on a two-year bridge contract at $3.9 million/season. From my side of the computer screen, this two-year deal is basically what I expected him to sign so I wasn't exactly surprised when the details came out, but that was not necessarily the case for a lot of Oilers fans. When I asked for feedback on Twitter, the reaction was way more split than I expected but I guess that's to be expected no matter what the final deal looked like. Frankly, there's nothing better than arguing with fellow Nation Citizens about contracts, and I was very excited to break it all down on this quick reaction episode of BLTN. Oh, and subscribe to my YouTube channel.

23 Aug 2023Bouchard's deal is done, Nuge is a girl dad, and the world's greatest website01:16:48

Does it get any better than a Wednesday with TWO fresh episodes of Better Lait Than Never? No, no it doesn't. That's the answer.

After knocking out a quick Evan Bouchard contract reaction episode earlier this morning, I'm back with the regularly scheduled edition of Better Lait Than Never to recap the week along with all of the shenanigans you've come to expect. Kicking things off, I got started with another chat about reality TV as I continued my summer binge on both Big Brother and Love Island USA. While I do enjoy both shows, there's little doubt that the latter has been much more entertaining to this point in the season. Steering the podcast back toward the Oilers, I spent a few minutes on the Evan Bouchard contract news that broke this morning and how the reaction was incredibly interesting to read. On the lighter side, I broke the news this morning that Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and his wife welcomed a healthy baby girl this past week and that both mom and baby are doing well. Judging by the reaction on social media, our new princess could be one of the most beloved babies this city has ever seen. Frankly, it was nice to read some positivity about the baby news after the overreactions that were flying around about the Bouchard deal and Tyler Wright being replaced as the Director of Amateur Scouting. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on everything that's been going on since last week's episode. Oh, and subscribe to my YouTube channel.

30 Aug 2023Sam Gagner's PTO, a new intro song, and the voicemail gets heavy01:17:21

Have we yet reached the point in our relationship where your Wednesdays feel incomplete without a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never? Thankfully, we don't have to find out this week as I've got a fresh podcast ready and set for your earholes.

Kicking off the podcast, I got started with another round of hoodie giveaways after you fine folks came through with so many new reviews over the last couple of weeks. Needless to say, I'm incredibly grateful for the response to this giveaway. From there, I checked in on some shenanigans that are popping up in the voicemail as no one seems to know who the voice of Xol the Will of Thousands is or why they sound so much like Ben. I also debuted a new song from Meat Watcher after I said last week that I was looking for a new intro track to kick off the pod. Once again, Meat Watcher came through with a banger that featured pretty much all of the regular contributors and I absolutely loved it.

Steering the podcast back toward the Oilers, I kicked off the news with the Sam Gagner PTO and how it was so much fun to be able to interview him shortly after the news dropped. Even though a lot of us expected Gagner to receive a professional tryout, that didn't make the news any less fun. Then again, not all of us were having a good time with this news so I tried to offer a look at both sides of the argument. The other news that made the rounds since the last podcast was the interview Connor McDavid did with Mark Spector and how one specific quote seemed to set the Internet ablaze even though I don't actually think it's a big deal. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on everything that's been going on since last week's episode. Oh, and subscribe to my YouTube channel.

07 Sep 2023The boys are back on the ice, the Kraken are collecting Oilers, and Nail Yakupov01:24:37

Are we reaching the point in our relationship where your Wednesday would feel incomplete without a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never? Good news, friends. I'm back with a fresh podcast that's set, edited, and ready for your earholes.

Kicking off this week's podcast, I got started with a quick recap of my trip to Kelowna to see my mom. From hanging out at the beach to taking a wine tour around some of Kelowna's coolest wineries, my weekend away was an absolute blast and one that I desperately needed. Back to BLTN business, the investigation continues into who is leaving messages as Xol the Will of Thousands, including some new listener allegations about who it might be. Needless to say, this story is nowhere near over. Turning the podcast back toward the Oilers, how could I not be excited about seeing the boys back on the ice at Rogers Place? Feeling like they've got something to prove this season, the captain's skates kicked off yesterday, and hearing the fellas talk about wanting to be as prepared as possible when the season gets going sent a shiver down my spine and into my loins. As gross as that metaphor may be to you, I could not care less because having the Oilers back on the ice makes me so very excited for the start of a new NHL season. In former Oiler news, Nail Yakupov appeared on Dropping the Gloves with John Scott this week and hearing some of his stories from his time in Edmonton was pretty intense. Honestly, I felt bad for the guy. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on everything that's been going on since last week's episode. Oh, and subscribe to my YouTube channel.

14 Sep 2023Adam Erne's PTO, the Vinny Desharnais interview, and more dating advice01:05:10

Did you think you weren't going to get a podcast just because we had our annual planning meetings at the Overlander Lodge near Hinton over the last couple of days?

Kicking off this week's podcast, I got started with an update on the reviews contest I held a few weeks back. Now that I have everyone's information and details, I'll be putting in the order for BLTN hoodies and shipping them out as quickly as possible. I also walked through a quick update from our annual planning meetings out near Hinton. Without getting too much in the weeds on this, I just wanted to give everyone an update on what to expect from us heading into the new season. Turning the podcast back toward the Oilers, the team announced Adam Erne's PTO this past week and I wondered how/if he could fit with all of the other pieces already in place. I also dug into the interview Vinny Desharnais did on The Sick Podcast specifically the quotes from Connor McDavid relating to stats vs. wins. As the season draws closer, Tyler is working on a 10-part series to look at the biggest storylines surrounding the team and I wanted to look at the three articles that have been posted so far while also adding in some questions of my own. On the lighter side, Darnell Nurse announced that he had a second baby this past week and ads yet another young Oiler offspring that we all hope to see sitting in the Stanley Cup come June. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on everything that's been going on since last week's episode. Oh, and subscribe to my YouTube channel.

21 Sep 2023There's an Oilers game on my calendar, and a whole lot more dating advice01:29:43

Is everyone trained up to expect a new episode of BLTN to drop every Wednesday yet? Are we into the routine yet? Excellent, that's what I thought.

Kicking off this week's podcast, I got started with a quick update on the BLTN contest hoodies that I promised over the last few weeks as well as a recap of my trip to Vancouver. While I didn't get a whole lot done on my mini vacay, I also didn't really realize how much I needed a break. Steering the podcast back toward the Oilers, it's hard not to be excited about the upcoming season given the sky-high expectations we have for our boys but also because many of us truly believe they can take the next step. And with the first pre-season game on the calendar for Sunday, the excitement for a new season is really starting to pick up.

It's not all sunshine and rainbows in Oilers land, though, as some news came out today that a few key pieces are still battling some bumps and bruises. From Mattias Ekhlolm missing the first few days with a hip flexor issue to Sam Gagner only practicing, the speedbumps are coming in early but only time will tell how disruptive they will end up being. Turning back to some good news, the team also announced this morning that Charlie Huddy and Doug Weight would be the two former players that will be inducted into the Oilers Hall of Fame and I couldn't think of two more deserving candidates. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on everything that's been going on since last week's episode. Oh, and subscribe to my YouTube channel.

27 Sep 2023Heritage Classic jerseys are out, the pre-season is rolling, and more voicemail01:10:36

Is everyone trained up to expect a new episode of BLTN to drop every Wednesday yet? Of course you are.

Kicking off this week's podcast, I got started with a couple of housekeeping items from behind the scenes, including an update on the BLTN hoodies, some reshuffling at Nation HQ, and a couple of upcoming events on the ON calendar. Diving into the Oilers news, the team revealed their Heritage Classic jerseys on Tuesday and I read a bunch of feedback from Nation Citizens about the new threads. Changing gears, the pre-season is well underway and that means there are actual stories to talk about, including the early cuts and overreactions some folks are having to Woodcroft's line combos. As for who's playing and who's not, I'm patiently awaiting an update on what's going on with Mattias Ekholm's hip and Ryan McLeod's mystery ailment, and when they'll be able to strap on the skates and join their teammates for the pre-season. Looking way ahead, I wanted to touch base on an article Cam Lewis wrote this past week about how Connor McDavid could be one of the youngest players to hit 1,000 career points provided he has some luck. 05 Oct 2023Are the Oilers in for a Jack Campbell redemption season?01:11:10

It's Wednesday night and that means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is all set and ready to massage your ear holes. This week, I talked about what's coming this season at Oilersnation, getting caught up with Oilers training camp, and listened to your voicemails about everything going on over the past week.

Kicking off this week's podcast, I got started with a quick recap of the Spooky Szn movie marathon I've been working through at the Castle Milk. I've only watched three Halloween movies so far, but I have to admit, all of them have been awful. Thankfully, I'm allowed to blame my missus for that. With only a week left to wait until the season opener — get your tickets to our party at Greta btw — I also walked through some of the new articles and shows that are coming to Oilersnation this season, including some new articles and shows. Digging into training camp, I had to start with Jack Campbell's pre-season performances so far and wondered whether or not we could be in line for a redemption tour. Needless to say, the pre-season doesn't really have any pressure to perform for NHL vets, but it's hard to ignore how well he's been playing to this point. As for players on the move, I also walked through the recent cuts the Oilers made at camp while also giving my own rankings on how quickly I think some of the kids will be back. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another Righteous Sack Beating and a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on everything that's been going on since last week's episode. Oh, and subscribe to my YouTube channel.

11 Oct 2023A quick season launch preview episode00:14:50

With the season kicking off tonight in Vancouver, I was too excited to wait until tomorrow's episode of Better Lait Than Never, so I decided to fire up the Rodecaster and knock out a quick 10-minute podcast to set you up for the game. But rather than simply previewing what to expect between the Oilers vs. Canucks, I walked you through some of the content we'll have coming at Oilersnation.com throughout the season. While many of the old favourites (GDB, Wrap Up) will be back for another tour, we're also launching some new content this season that excites me. And with the hockey game still hours away, why not record a quick preview episode of the podcast to help get us all fired up about the first game of the year? After four months of waiting, it feels so good to be back.

12 Oct 2023Who were these imposters in Oilers jerseys?01:04:08

It's Thursday morning and the Season Launch Party is behind us, meaning a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is all set and ready to massage your ear holes. This week, I talked about last night's event, the Oilers getting beat down by the Canucks, and listened to your voicemails about everything going on over the past week.

Kicking off this week's podcast, I got started with a recap of our Season Launch Party at Greta. While I was always expecting to have a great night with my fellow Nation Citizens, last night was yet another example of what is so amazing about this community. Despite the late start on a Wednesday night, you amazing folks flooded Greta, brought amazing vibes with you, and helped us raise money for KidSport simultaneously. Unfortunately, the Edmonton Oilers didn't feel the need to show up to last night's game and got lit up accordingly. For as hyped as we all were for the game, it was almost like the team on the ice forgot there was a game to play. On the bright side, you've gotta think it's best to get the worst game of the year outta the way, amirite? ANYBODY?! Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another Righteous Sack Beating and a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on everything that's been going on since last week's episode. Oh, and subscribe to my YouTube channel.

18 Oct 2023More Oilers ass kickings and less getting our asses kicked... please01:01:57

After dropping the first two games of the year in disappointing fashion, the Oilers rebounded in a massive way with a 6-1 win over the Nashville Predators. Not only was that win huge for the team, but it was also big for the general happiness of Oilers fans everywhere.

Kicking off this week's BLTN, I started the podcast with a few housekeeping notes from behind the scenes at Baggedmilk Manor and at Nation HQ. I gave an update on what the hell is taking so long for your hoodies to arrive, the latest movies I've watched as part of the Spooky Szn Spectacular, and was also able to gush about this being new blink-182 album week. With my own nonsense out of the way, I dove into what was an eventful week for the Edmonton Oilers that saw the team lose two winnable games before bouncing back with a dominant performance over the Predators. Sticking with that win, it was a magical evening in Nashville as the Oilers got contributions throughout the lineup, which paid off in a big way. From Leon Draisaitl's continued dominance to Jack Campbell bouncing back in a big way to the second line chipping in with three goals, that was easily the most complete game the boys have played so far. Needless to say, last night's win was one that not only did the team need, but all of us also needed. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another Righteous Sack Beating and a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on everything that's been happening since last week's episode. Oh, and subscribe to my YouTube channel.

25 Oct 2023The Oilers are ruining my mood and I need them to stop... please.01:13:16

Is there anything better than getting your weekly episode of Better Lait Than Never earlier than expected? Of course not, don't be ridiculous. On this week's podcast, there was plenty to talk about as the Oilers dropped their third straight game, lost Connor McDavid for the next few games, and I'm spending the rest of my Wednesday preparing for tonight's Tool concert.

To kick off this week's podcast, I got started with a few housekeeping items from shipping out those contest hoodies to watching games at Nation HQ with the squad. That led me to a preview of Sunday's Heritage Classic and how that game isn't shaping up the way so many of us would have expected since both the Oilers and Flames are struggling so badly. On the bright side, I'm going to the Tool concert at Rogers Place tonight, which excites me to be able to show up to the rink and not be stressing about what the Oilers may or may not do on any given night. And with our beloved hockey team at the front of my mind, I dove into what's been happening over the last week and how things seem to be getting worse and not better. Starting with Connor McDavid's upper-body injury, the hits keep coming for an Oilers team that just cannot seem to find any traction. The mistakes they're making are numerous, and while we all know that can happen, the real problem is that most of these avoidable issues are winding up in the back of the net. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another Righteous Sack Beating and a fresh round of voicemails to get your take on everything that's been happening since last week's episode. Oh, and subscribe to my YouTube channel.
