Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone, Through the Trapdoor (16) We're nearly to the end of our re-read of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's (or Philosopher's) Stone. Chapter 16, Through the Trapdoor is a BIG ONE... Harry, Ron and Hermione are put through the magic made for children gauntlet, training to become the heroes of our story! To do so, they must get through the obstacle course setup by our puppet master, Albus Dumbledore. Their challenge: surviving a 3-headed dog (Fluffy), Devil's Snare, enchanted flying keys, a killer chess set, an already knocked out troll, and a potentially poisonous potions riddle in an attempt to reach the stone before our secret antagonist (spoiler: it's Quirrell or Voldemort.. Quirrelldemort). I dive into my theory of how this is all a test for Harry and what each of the protective obstacles are meant to evaluate in our heroes in training. I also pick my favorite foreshadow moments, share some responses to Game of Inches (Expecto Plot-Chango) questions from social media (@belatedbinge), and give away some meaningless awards from the chapter - it's not a great one for Prof McG... Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone, The Letters from No One (3) & The Keeper of the Keys (4). Vernon spends a full chapter having a nervous breakdown when Hogwarts letters fill every inch of his perfectly normal suburban home, yet Harry can't get ahold of a single one. The only logical choice is to drag his family to the middle of some random body of water with nothing but a couple bags of chips and a shotgun. This is when Hagrid makes a grand re-entrance into our story. We learn how Harry really lost his parents, that he's a wizard and instead of taking his anger out on Vernon and/or Petunia for keeping this information from Harry all his life. Or perhaps abusing him for the past 10 years. Hagrid instead gives Dudley a pig tail, and not the hairstyle. In the discussion we'll take a closer look at Hagrid as a character, theorize how this all would have gone down if Harry had just read the first letter he received in the hallway and as usual, call out my favorite foreshadow moments and give away meaningless awards. Sparking the inspiration for this week's exclusive bonus episode "MI7 Kids" about Molly Weasley and her role in Dumbledore's master plan. This week on Belated Binge, I covered Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets chapter 13: The Very Secret Diary. In this chapter, someone (*cough Ginny cough*) tried to flush a book DOWN A TOILET! Which is not the disposal method I would have recommended. But as plot would have it, *they* chose a toilet in Moaning Myrtle's bathroom. One she just happen to be hanging out in. All of this lead Harry to obtain Tom Riddle's diary, which was not what a certain red-headed first year was thrilled to see. This was especially true after he received her singing Valentine. Eventually, Harry figures out how to communicate with Diary Tom, who shows him how Hagrid was framed for killing Myrtle 50 years ago! I also shed some light (Lumos) on a theory I have that IF Harry had kept the diary, Diary Tom wouldn't have had a reason to release the Basalisk on muggle borns anymore. I also make my case for what his plan would have been, once he realized Harry Potter had his diary. As usual, I pick my favorite Divination foreshadow moments from the chapter, callout characters by giving & taking House Points, and share the parts of the chapter that I believe are utterly Riddikulus! This episode, Agent Stahl is playing DIRTY arresting Bobby for the murder of Hefner and taking Opie, Donna and the kids to a witness protection facility. She sets Opie up as if he's the witness who accused Bobby so that Clay and the rest of SAMCRO will think he's a rat.
The plan works. Too well.
Despite Jax Teller insisting Opie is no rat. Clay and Tig operate behind the club's back to investigate and are convinced that Opie has turned on SOA.

Harry Potter is ready to go to Hogwarts! After a ministry car escorts him to the train station and an awkward conversation with Mr. Weasley, he's on the Hogwarts Express and it doesn't matter that there's a convicted murderer out to get him, right?
WRONG!
Before the train makes it to the school, it's stopped and we're introduced to DEMENTORS! Which are just the physical form of depression. So that's fun...
Harry passes out from his childhood trauma, but at least we won't hear the term "Azkaban guard" anymore. Also, we met Lupin!!!

We get our first glimpse of Jax as a leader of SAMCRO in AK-51. Not so much by choice, but my necessity.
When Clay is taken into ATF custody by Agent Stahl for being an accessory to a crime after one of the suspects placed a call to TM, Jax is thrown into the fire to find a way to:
1. Find the people responsible to avoid the whole club getting arrested for selling the guns to people who used them to break out a prisoner, kill a cop and civilians.
2. Find a way to get the current gun inventory out of the clubhouse before ATF comes to search the place.
Along the way, we get some more behind the ATF agent that's stalking Tara, we get a little more behind the morality of SAMCRO, and we get a little more behind panties flushed down the toilet???

Giving back is a big Opie episode! We find out why Opie was in prison and who in the club let him down when an ex-member comes to see his son's band play at Gemma's town fundraiser. Fitting for a July 4th release, Opie is in charge of fireworks!
Jax is tasked with keeping an eye on him and making sure he doesn't cross paths with Opie. This lasts about 4 minutes and the inevitable altercation takes place before Opie and Jax set a punishment in motion for a tattoo that wasn't covered up.
While all this is happening at the fundraiser, Clay and the rest of the club are protecting a friend of Otto's who has a "nervous tick kind of thing." The payoff might not be big enough for what comes along with Chucky!
Along the way we get more on that ATF agent following the club, and Tara. We get a lesson in family and in loyalty. And we get more Bobby Elvis!

In this first pilot episode we're introduced to the Sons of Anarchy motorcycle club (SAMCRO). Our main character Jax Teller, the Vice President (VP) of the club. Clay Morrow, Opie Whinston, Bobby Elvis, Tig, Juice, Half Sack, Chibs, and not to mention our head woman in charge Gemma Teller and the ladies of Jax's past, present and future Tara and Wendy.
So much conflict right off the bat. Explosions, guns, motorcycles, crooked cops, dead bodies, drugs, a BABY! And Jax discovering a book his late father John Teller wrote about the club. It's a chaotic beginning to what promises to be a wild ride and I hope you'll take it with me!

The Seeds is a funny episode really! It's full of mini side missions.
Tig's past relations are brought into question, leading to a side mission to avoid an unfortunate discovery of his DNA that would put SAMCRO at jeopardy.
Jax convinces a crow eater to take one for the team and may have contributed to a man being stabbed in the head with an axe???
Clay runs his own side mission with Opie tagging along for a protection run that doesn't go as planned, unless you meant Clay's plan.
Abel is expected to make a full recovery and so is Wendy.
Gemma's side mission to find John Teller's manuscript is thwarted by Jax.
The episode ends at Gemma and Clay's for dinner, but Opie and Donna aren't in attendance.

This episode is all about the women as Agent Stahl goes after the women attached to SAMCRO. Luanna, Cherry aka Rita, Tara, and Donna all get unwanted visits from the ATF agent.
She also has sketches of Opie and Bobby from the Hefner murder witness and is working on getting information from Otto in prison. Her plan: RICO.
Jax and Unser break into the police station, Cherry gets a new name and address, Hale is revealed to be enjoying more than just working with Stahl. Which is good to enjoy before the end of the episode when Otto BASHES HER FACE AGAINST A TABLE REPEATEDLY!

My FIRST TIME EVER watching Breaking Bad!
This episode, Walter White runs into some trouble with the guys he thought he and Jesse Pinkman killed. Turns out, 1 is still alive - which I PREDICTED! Sort of... I guessed they both would live, but 1 did and I'll take that as a win!
We spend most of the episode in Jesse's living room arguing over who is going to dispose of the dead body and who's going to commit cold blooded murder. Walt's wife also confronts Jesse after Walt tells her that he bought pot off of him, which is fun!
The episode ends with Jesse having done his job getting rid of the body, but he didn't do a great job because the chemicals ate right through the bath tub and ceiling to drop a lot of grossness into his hallway...

Harry Potter is an outlaw now! He's run away from Privet Drive and the Dursleys and he's preparing to go underground. Luckily, after seeing a dark dog-like godfather shaped shadow he trips falls and calls the Knight Bus to come pick him up and take him to London.
He pretends to be Neville Longbottom, learns more about Sirius Black, and takes a wild ride to the Leaky Cauldron where Cornelius Fudge, the Minister of Magic is waiting for him.
After a nice chat over a spot of tea, Harry is not punished for inflating is aunt and is now going to be hanging out in Diagon Alley for the rest of the Summer. Alone.

After a coming home party at Jax's house for Abel, Opie and Donna switch cars. Tig doesn't notice. The real witness' identity is shared by Unser to Clay. But, when Clay tries to call off the Opie hit, it's too late.
Tig kills Donna!

Owl Post & Aunt Marge's Big Mistake
Welcome back to the Harry Potter binge! The first chapter of Prisoner of Azkaban: Owl Post follows the same formula that has been established. It's Harry's birthday, he's sad to be at the Dursleys, the Dursleys hate him, luckily he's a magic boy with magic friends from magic school. At some point something happens to make Vernon angry and hate him more and there's something big foreshadowed for a major plot point to come later. Then he goes to sleep.
Luckily, this time his friends send him gifts for his birthday!
Chapter 2: Aunt Marge's Big Mistake starts to pick up a little bit, but is still pretty quick. Vernon's sister is in town, she's been bullying Harry his entire life because she's a terrible person. She spends the chapter bullying him and eventually he accidentally inflates her like the Goodyear blimp.
He ends up running away and not getting his Hogsmeade permission slip signed because blowing up your aunt like a hot air balloon doesn't qualify in Vernon's mind as "behaving" I suppose.

The Office turns competitive when Michael (on behalf of the sales team) challenges the workers in the warehouse to a game of Basketball to determine who will have to work on Saturday.
Michael and Dwight are as bad at hoops as you might expect. Stanley is much worse than Michael expects. Jim is actually pretty good. Somehow (plot) the sales team is winning when Michael takes an inadvertent elbow and calls the game off, but he's intimidated by the warehouse workers and decides nobody is working Saturday.
Quick hitters: Pam is weird this whole episode. Kevin is a really good shooter. As a basketball fan, it's really hard to watch tv show basketball that's supposed to be played badly.

We've had some amazing Harry Potter discussions on this podcast, but it's time to binge!
As we dive back into the 3rd book, Prisoner of Azkaban, I thought it would be good to reset on where we left off.
In the first 5 chapters of POA, Harry has successfully managed to leave the Dursleys, in quite dramatic fashion. He's had a mini vacation in Diagon Alley with a hotel room to himself and all the ice cream he can eat. He's been reunited with the Weasleys and Hermione as well.
He's also been seeing a big black dog figure that he later learns is a death omen, found out that Sirius Black, who was convicted of mass murder, has escaped the wizard prison called Azkaban. And he's also come face to face with the 'Azkaban Guards' aka Dementors forcing him to relive his trauma and pass out on the Hogwarts Express.
But he also met Remus Lupin, ate some chocolate, and Hermione had a secret meeting with Professor McGonagall - which turns out to be a time turner.

We get square with the Irish, although that goes very very wrong when some very poor aim sends bullets in Clay's direction. We also close the saga on Agent Kohn stalking Tara and have some very poor timed & placed intimacy between Jax and Tara.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, The Heir of Slytherin. Sarah from First Years: A Harry Potter Podcast for adult first time readers of the series is BACK! The first repeat guest on the podcast AND first back-to-back chapter guest! It's time for the main climax, the final showdown, and of course the VILLAIN MONOLOGUE. And nobody can villain monologue like a teenage memory of Tom Riddle. He's not even Voldemort yet (really) and he's got the "I'm the greatest sorcerer in the world" thing down. Harry doesn't stand for that slander though because he knows the head wizard on the cobble street is actually Albus Dumbledore. And lucky for him, that loyalty is enough to bring Fawkes the Phoenix to his aid when it comes time to battle a giant snake with a murder stare, without a wand... Seriously Tom, give him his wand back! There's far more blood and gore than you might expect in a book written for children, and way more 'Harry is a bit slow' than you remember from reading this as a kid. Luckily, Fawkes takes care of the Basalisks eyes for him AND brings him the Sorting Hat. While avoiding a concussion, Harry retrieves the sword of Godric Gryffindor and stabs the Basalisk through the mouth. He then uses his new fang souvenir to do more stabbing (so much stabbing in this chapter), this time through the diary, which kills memory Tom Riddle and, unknowingly to Harry, one of Voldemort's horcruxes. This is a huge chapter with a ton of laughs along the way! Dwight is the star of the Alliance episode. In the face of looming downsizing, Dwight asks Jim to form an alliance. Jim doesn't know what this means, but takes this as a sign from whatever higher power he believes in and runs with it.
One particular high note is when Dwight climbs into a box in the warehouse to spy on a rumored meeting of members of a competing alliance. Hilarity ensues throughout.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Chapter 18 Dobby's Reward We've wrapped up Chamber of Secrets. In this final chapter, Molly and Arthur Weasley get a reunion with their very much not dead daughter Ginny, who's been saved by Harry Potter after nearly being soul sucked by a terrifying teenage Tom Riddle aka Voldemort. Harry explains the plot of the book for everyone with the help of Dumbledore who also eases Harry's concerns about almost being put in Slytherin house instead of Gryffindor, because he still cares about that. Lucius Malfoy shows up with Dobby, who's presence in completely inexplicable aside from "plot reasons." After some witty banter back and forth amongst the 3 of them and some very NOT subtle hints from Dobby along the way, Harry manages to trick Lucius into throwing a sock to Dobby, setting him free. YAY FREE DOBBY! There's a feast, cooked by a bunch of other house elves that are very much not free and Harry drops his digits to Ron so they can talk on the phone over the Summer. That should be entertaining later... Michael lets a "hot girl" use the conference room to sell purses. The running joke is that she's a "hotter version of Pam." She has all the men (especially Michael) in a tizzy. Ultimately, Jim swoops in and lands the date, which Pam is not nearly as stoked about as she is leading on.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, The Chamber of Secrets. I was joined by Sarah from First Years: A Harry Potter Podcast for adult first time readers of the series and we had a blast with this one, making history. The first repeat guest on the podcast! It's the title chapter of the book, so it must be important! Harry manipulates he and Ron's way to the hospital wing where an unconscious Hermione hands over all the plot convenience needed for Harry to figure out the mystery of the book. Armed with the knowledge of the Basalisk, the pipes, his recent brain blast of Moaning Myrtle being the girl who was killed 50 years ago, He and Ron are about to tell Professor McGonogall everything. But, they instead hide in a closet and overhear that Ginny Weasley has been taken to the Chamber by the Heir of Slytherin. Instead of informing the professors of what they've discovered as intended, they later go to find Lockhart who proves to be too incompetent to best a couple of 12 year olds at magic. Again, instead of doing the logical thing, they decide to go hunting for the Chamber of Secrets with a hostage. After a trip down the grossest water slide in history, Lockhart tries to obliviate 2 children, but uses Ron's broken wand and explodes the tunnel instead. Separated from the others, Harry goes on to find the entrance to the Chamber and save the day... This is the chapter where Trelawney predicts Harry's death in Divination class because she sees a big black dog aka the Grim in a teacup. Then Hagrid makes Harry ride a Hippogriff named Buckbeak after he successfully pets him in Care of Magical Creatures. Unfortunately, Draco Malfoy isn't a fan of Harry getting attention or in paying attention to Hagrid's warnings. So, he insults Buckbeak and gets clawed up as a result of his actions.
Throughout the discussion we'll rate Draco's ability as a school bully. Dan will defend Trelawney's abilities as a teacher and seer. We'll talk about Hagrid's qualification for teaching, Dumbledore's loose ship, how there must be good Slytherins we don't see and a lot of other fun stuff!

| 17 Feb 2022 | More than Just a Meme Sorcerer’s Stone Ch. 10 & 11 | 00:44:53 | |
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone, Halloween and Quidditch Harry and Ron become Sherlock Holmes and Watson and this chapter has the iconic movie scene turned viral internet meme "It's LeviOsa not LeviosA" or however you spell it. While Hermione looks very smart and talented, it doesn't make Ron feel very good to be shown up by his Charms partner. His reaction was... not great. He says some mean things about Hermione, leading her to spend the rest of the day in the girls bathroom, crying. At the Halloween feast, Quirrelldemort pulls his troll nonsense, which is a plot line I touch on thoroughly and sparked this week's bonus episode "Trolling Dumbledore" which is available to Free Elf Patrons and above (https://www.patreon.com/BelatedBinge). We then get a TON of action with Harry and Ron saving Hermione from the troll with a well placed wand up the nose and a successful pronunciation from Ron dropping a club on the troll's head. This naturally forms our Golden Trio (finally). Quidditch was highlighted by Harry nearly plummeting to his death from a broomstick, which becomes bit of a theme in these books... The first episode of the Belated Binge podcast covers the first chapter of the series which begins on an iconic opening line through the eyes of Vernon Dursley who is NOT the main character. He’s a stick in the mud on his best day and this wasn’t his best day. Too many abnormal things happening for his liking. Once he goes to sleep the real story begins as Albus Dumbledore drops off baby Harry Potter. On the doorstep, which is exactly what you do with an infant! Much of the discussion puts a magnifying glass on Dumbledore, the information he's keeping close to the vest during his discussions with Professor McGonagall and Hagrid, and the foundation of his master plan. I share some of my thoughts and theories, also some of my favorite foreshadow moments from the chapter. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone, The Mirror of Erised (12) & Nicolas Flamel (13) The Mirror of Erised chapter begins with one of the greatest things in the entire series: Fred and George Weasley are pelting Professor Quirrell in the back of the head, and thus parasite baby Voldemort in the face with snowballs! Harry also has his greatest Christmas in a decade of life with the Dursleys. Not only did he get an awesome Weasley jumper from Molly, he also received an invisibility cloak with a note from a mystery sender. The cloak had belonged to Harry's father James, and the sender was giving it to Harry. What this really means is that Albus Dumbledore planted a Deathly Hallow in the possession of an 11 year old child. And what do children who receive such a gift immediately do? They take a middle of the night time trip to... the library? Did he give this to Hermione??? After a riddikulusly close call, almost being caught by Filtch and Snape, Harry hides in a room and comes face to face with his family for the first time in his life. After a few more trips, he has a nice chat with Dumbledore and learns how the Mirror of Erised actually works. Later, he gets the brain blast of where he saw Nicolas Flamel's name before after receiving another Dumbledore chocolate frog card - thanks Neville! Hermione finds his name in her casual bedtime stories book and the Golden Trio learns about the Sorcerer's or Philosopher's Stone! WE DID IT! We finished Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's (Philosopher's) Stone! This week, we discuss the final chapter The Man with Two Faces. The final magical showdown between the 'real' bad guy with everything you could want like: bad guy exposition, no magic wands, a dude with a serial killer living on the back of his head, and a child burning a man's face with his bare hands.... We reflect on Dumbledore's relationship with the Mirror of Erised and a theory about its creation. As always, we pick out some fun foreshadow moments from the chapter and we theorize on the outcome of the Quirrell vs. Harry scene if Voldemort isn't camping out on Quirrell's head.
