05 Mar 2023 | Motion Designer Alex Liou | 00:50:17
Alex trained as a musician. He followed a drumming dream to Nashville along with an internship at a 'mom & pop' business. There, they had him creating graphics and videos - those two things came together when Alex discovered motion graphics. He took to studying and developing as a motion designer. Self taught, he’s always been constantly trying to learn and improve. He didn't want to be the best in his company. He wanted to learn from the best... Finding an internship in LA working on big Hollywood movies, he kept at it. Swapping socialising for learning, upskilling and sharing his self initiated projects on Instagram - he made a name for himself and studios started coming to him. Now, post-pandemic, he’s trying to rebalance work-life. 4 day weeks are in. Snowboarding weekends are the norm. But it’s a slippery slope when you stop learning - the instability of freelancing is still keeping him on his toes.

After falling into freelance life accidentally in the late nineties, Paul Jarvis has helped to shape the way many freelancers work. And now, 20 years later, Paul is a writer and published author who helps entrepreneurs build businesses that are better, not bigger. Through his weekly email series, the Sunday Dispatches, multiple podcasts and online courses, and now his book, Company of One: Why Staying Small is the Next Big Thing for Business, Paul teaches freelancers to make up their own rules when it comes to how they want their businesses to look. EPISODE SPONSORED BY RIVERSIDE See how recording, live streaming and repurposing your content with Riverside can help your freelance business. Use this link to help support the podcast or go to beingfreelance.com/riverside ----------- ABOUT THIS EPISODE Despite initially getting the cold shoulder from cold outreach, Hazel soon found her niche creating purpose-driven work, particularly around feminist and social issues. A viral social media post early in her career led to work with major clients like Netflix, though she discusses the anxiety that came with sudden exposure. Hazel opens up about managing the rollercoaster of freelance life, including how she handles quiet periods - even training as a face painter as a backup plan. She discusses the evolution of her business, from client work to running an online shop, painting murals, and publishing a book. The conversation delves into the challenges of social media management, maintaining authenticity while building a following, and protecting creative work from plagiarism. Hazel emphasises the importance of in-person connections and pushing through comfort zones, sharing how speaking engagements have led to exciting opportunities. A key theme is staying true to your authentic voice - Hazel describes temporarily removing her women's health-focused work from her portfolio on advice from a mentor, only to realise this was diluting her unique perspective that clients value.

18 Nov 2018 | “I’ve reached my goal, what’s next?” - Web Developer Jason Resnick | 00:40:20
Web developer Jason Resnick had a big life goal. When he started a family, he wanted to be home to see his kid’s first steps and hear their first words. To him (and to most of us, I’d imagine) that’s what’s important. Jason wanted to be able to shape everything else around that. Rewind a few years to the late nineties and you’d find him ditching economics class to take casual HTML lessons from a friend via email. That’s where Jason fell in love with web development, and he soon began building a part-time freelance business around a full-time job. When the time came to leave his job and take the business full-time, Jason had the skill-set to do the work, but none of the business and sales knowledge needed to bring it in. We talk about how he’s developed that knowledge and built a sustainable freelance business that’s full of efficient processes. And how he now, having reached his life goal of building that flexible career, is determined to help other freelancers do the same. 17 Mar 2024 | Art Beyond the Arches: From McDonald's to a varied diet of design & illustration for freelancer Dan Bailey | 00:50:54
Dan went freelance twice. First for creative freedom. Secondly to free him up for his family. Starting out as a designer for McDonald's but wanted a more varied diet of projects. With a lot of time freelancing in agencies, Dan learnt to stand out, be indispensable and build relationships to expand his chance of finding work. He also flexed himself creatively with illustration side projects (after college tutors said he’d never make a living from drawing!) Adding a unique flair to his freelancer personal brand as 'Rubber Penguin’. Using a business name helped him be remembered and found - useful if you have a common name (Shout out to all the Dan Baileys of the world!). It also let him focus on adding character to his freelancing design work through illustration. When you're a freelancer, you're a business. And whilst Dan's time in agencies helped him with dealing with freelance clients professionally, he still struggled to have confidence in his value, his pricing - what he could charge for projects. Getting to know other freelancers and becoming co-mentors with them gave him a chance to discuss pricing strategies, finally getting that piece of the freelance puzzle in place. For all the talk of fast food, this is a slow burner of a career. Dan has gradually built his reputation within the industry. As a freelancer he's now getting the kind of work he wants to be doing at a price he deserves. Being able to to work around his family in a way that in-house demands would never allow. Happy Meal? No. Happy Freelancer? Yes. JOIN THE COMMUNITY NEW TO FREELANCING? THERE'S A COURSE FOR YOU! The Being Freelance course is made for you! 17 Mar 2019 | Take an interest in other humans - Musician Kari Paavola | 00:31:11
He started out where many drummers did in his day; responding to magazine adverts for unpaid work with bands. Over the years, Kari’s built a successful career for himself as a freelance musician, finding plenty of ways to diversify his income. He’s learnt so much that he now teaches others how to turn their passion into a profession. So how did he get there, in an industry where it’s notoriously difficult to make a living? Interestingly, by using a lot of the same skills and approaches that freelancers in other industries learn to apply. Kari’s service might seem wildly different to yours, but you’ll be surprised by how much you can learn from his story of being freelance. 09 Feb 2020 | Own your job title - Copywriter and Content Marketer Rose Crompton | 00:39:54
Rose is on her second run being freelance after things didn’t work out the first time around. After realising she’d underestimated the amount of work she’d need to put in, Rose took a job at an adult store in London. She’d been a writer at a magazine for years before going freelance and then ending up in retail, so when she found out her new employers were launching a magazine and website, she put herself forward for the work and carved out a full-time writing role. Rose learnt a lot on the job about the differences between journalism and writing as a marketer, and when she moved to Brisbane with her Aussie husband, she ended up freelance once again, and this time with a much better idea of how to make it work. She shares all the lessons she’s picked up along the way, from the things that have gone wrong and those that have gone right, and talks about the one big mindset shift that’s made a crucial difference.

Anna had built a career across corporate and government comms in Melbourne. But if she wanted to move her family out of the city and that meant first meant transforming the way she worked. Anna set out to prove she could match her past income, now as a freelance copywriter. Today she’s questioning the external pressures that tell us to ‘scale’. The farmers before them planted olive trees. That doesn’t mean it’s a business for her. Just because other copywriters before her have grown with subcontractors and products, does she have to follow them too? Anna goes into detail about how she has built her website and her business to work around her family. So much insight AND the sound of Australian birds too - you're in for a treat!

22 Nov 2020 | When working for free makes sense - Photographer Alexandra Cameron | 00:52:08
Alex studied film at university but soon found that the immediacy of photography suited her better. She worked part-time on the side for years while building up her skills and portfolio, often shooting for free or a small amount. These days, with a strong portfolio including some famous faces, Alex says that she will still work for free sometimes because it pays later on. She chats to Steve about the different ways she’s made money, including from licensing her photos and selling prints. While she’s definitely got better at negotiating her rates, Alex believes that you have to be in it because you’re passionate about taking good photos. For her, that means capturing portraits of people she admires and believes in. This is her freelance story so far.

She bounced back and found her niche, built relationships with clients, and grew and edited her own successful website. She now writes emails for a living and is crowdfunding her first book. Sian chats to Steve about the lessons she's learned along the way, the fear she still feels sending pitches, and that one time the tax office threatened her with bankruptcy. When one of his tweets blew up and gained 2.5 million impressions, Tom seized the moment and wrote an ebook; the first in a lineup of digital products he’s creating to help freelancers get ahead. 07 Jun 2020 | Finding my own clients - Graphic Designer Christian Tait | 00:34:21
Christian spent the best part of two decades working in agencies before eventually going freelance. He’d had a couple of trial runs before but this time he wanted to do it properly. To Christian, that meant bringing in his own clients rather than setting up in the corner of an agency. And it’s working. These days, Christian gets most of his work via social media or word of mouth. He talks about taking a slow approach where the focus is on building relationships. He also chats to Steve about working at home with his wife (a fellow freelancer), collaborating on projects, and finding balance (by riding around on tractors every Friday when he volunteers at the local nature reserve).

Work came via old contacts, family and friends for the first five years, and then John discovered the world of online marketing. He developed his website, began using his skills to create “Relentlessly Helpful” content, and got really good at LinkedIn. “It feels a bit like you’re shouting into the wind at first”, says John, but eventually the referrals and enquiries started coming in. He chats to Steve about building an online presence, speaking at events, writing a book, working with clients, and being a bit rubbish at the whole work-life balance thing. 25 Mar 2018 | Making Connections - Graphic Designer Amber Asay | 00:37:37
Working for agencies and studios as a graphic designer since 2012, Amber Asay hated that she couldn’t interact directly with her clients. She also couldn’t show off her work in a personal portfolio, since her creations were the intellectual property of her employers. Even if she could have, she didn’t take much pride in the type of corporate branding work she had been doing. Now she’s connected to her clients and her peers, slogging away at it, but riding a high as she charts her own path. Great thoughts on working a full-time job while growing her freelancing practice, connecting, putting your work out there and more. Love learning from other freelancers like this? 06 Jun 2021 | Human-centred freelancing - Brand Designer Nela Dunato | 00:41:44
Nela Dunato is an artist, designer, and writer from Rijeka, Croatia. She likes to have fingers in 'many pies’, but equally has to balance the challenge of having so many hobbies that could also become work. She's forged a successful freelance career working for 'human centered brands'. A form of business ownership she knows so well she could write the book on it. In fact, shedid. Nela discusses the great position bilingual freelancers are in. So many go straight for English language websites, but actually if you have a site in your native tongue too, you can make a far greater impact SEO wise in that smaller pond.

19 Jul 2020 | Survival skills - Copywriter and Author Sarah Townsend | 00:38:55
Sarah’s been freelance for more than twenty years now and she says it’s taken her “a damn long time” to get to where she is. She’s gone from saying yes to everything and trying to do it all herself - including raising two children as a single parent - to taking herself seriously as a business owner and finding boundaries, balance and a way to do more than just survive. These days, after turning fifty, Sarah gives herself Fridays off and outsources the jobs she doesn’t enjoy. She works from the gym (when we’re not in lockdown), where she breaks up her day with exercise and feels energised by the buzz of people around her. In her book, Survival Skills for Freelancers, released recently in June 2020, Sarah shares the biggest lessons she’s learnt about working for yourself without burning out. The book has been voted as the next Being Freelance Book Club read for summer 2020, so come and join us in the community to read along.

She’s building on the skills she picked up in that first writing job and investing in herself with courses, mentorships and a mastermind. 25 Nov 2018 | Is freelancing child's play? - Kids' App Designer Chris O'Shea | 00:33:13
Chris O’Shea first started freelancing straight out of college. After teaching himself web development with a library book, Chris had a phone line installed in his childhood bedroom in the family home. From there, 18-year-old Chris ran his own web design company in what was his first stab at self-employment. Sadly, (or luckily, depending on how you look at it) that one didn’t work out, and so Chris went back to uni to study a Digital Art degree. Moving to London in 2005, Chris soon found himself leading the way in the world of interactive installations. Travelling the world, running events and managing a successful blog - all alongside doing the work in his freelance business - Chris became an authority in his field. From building a name for himself to building a family; Chris is now a stay-at-home dad of two. Shifting to a career that allows him to work on projects he loves while still being around for his kids. We talk about what he learnt from that early experience of freelance life, how he applied those lessons to the impressive career he built for himself in London, and how he’s now found himself scaling back a little to juggle family life with running his third business, ‘Cowly Owl’. Chris isn’t just designing games. He’s designing a work life that fits his family. 06 Jan 2019 | Location Independent - Copywriter Kelly Dunning | 00:39:46
Digital nomad Kelly landed her first freelance writing gig while she was on a working holiday in New Zealand. Broke and struggling to find work locally, Kelly was introduced to the online world of content mills and freelance market places. After falling in love with a zombie-clad Brit she’d met in a haunted prison (true story!), Canadian-born Kelly found herself living and working in the UK. She spent her days looking after three-year-olds and her evenings and weekends climbing the freelance ladder. Eventually, after more than a year of building up her portfolio and establishing a name for herself, Kelly took her freelance business full-time and hit the road again. That was in 2011, and Kelly’s been travelling the world while she freelances ever since. We chat about how she balances work with travel, how she feels about the security of freelance life, and why she chose to de-monetise her travel blog. 15 Apr 2018 | The Passive Income Wake Up Call - Copywriter Kayla Hollatz | 00:35:22
Not long out of college, Kayla quit her PR job to become self-employed. She was seduced by the 'one to many' infopreneurs - making money online from being an expert, selling courses etc. The dream of passive income soon became a nightmare of over-work in order to keep her sales funnel topped up. After a year of crazy 80-90 hour weeks she switched from products to services and became a freelance copywriter. But that doesn't mean she didn't learn anything from that first year and be able to put it to good use for both herself and her clients. 08 Mar 2020 | Be a good craftsman - Audio Producer Matthew Walker | 00:29:12
Matthew left uni in 2009, right after the financial crash. Ready to find a way to combine his love for music and games, he started freelancing immediately, picking up small projects and commissions, getting involved with whatever he could outside of his full-time job. But it wasn’t until 2016, after he was made redundant, that Matthew went freelance full-time. He had plenty of good contacts and some work in the pipeline, and things snowballed from there. As his clients grew so did he, and he began picking up referrals the more he got his name out there. He doesn’t have plans to grow his business to be any bigger than him. He simply wants to be a good craftsman, he says, and he’s very happy that he’s able to provide for his family while doing work he loves.

06 May 2018 | Instagram Success Story - Photographer Ron Timehin | 00:27:21
Ron Timehin thought he would work in the music industry, but he went a completely different route. Playing music since he was 7, reaching the highest musical grade on the trumpet at 16, travelling and playing in ensembles around the world, it seemed like a natural next step. However, the reaction to his pictures he had been taking and posting on Instagram gave him the confidence to pursue photography professionally. Ron worked his day job, while freelancing on the side. Building up his skills, growing his audience. When a big sports brand comes knocking you know you're doing something right. Afer grinding at it after work every evening and weekend he finally quit his job and went all-in - it’s been great ever since, with work for a number of huge companies! His work-life balance is much better now. While he still has very busy days, not having an additional full-time job on top of his craft frees up time for him. He can now take days off and arrange his schedule as he'd like it, with space now to work on personal projects. It was brilliant hearing about tapping into Instagram to get clients, collaborating with the likes of Adobe, putting himself out there and seizing opportunities has really paid off. Key takeaways:
