18 Jan 2023How to Support Your Speech & Language Students with Hallie Sherman00:32:56

When we see a student struggling, we often feel like it’s our fault and that we need to have all the answers, but I want to encourage you to lean on the staff at your school to help. When it comes to speech and language, there are so many elements to consider, and your school’s SLP has the skill set required to determine if a student needs their services.

Our guest today, Hallie Sherman, is here to provide so much great information about speech and language. She’s sharing which skills are associated with speech and language, what to look out for in your students, how you can collaborate with an SLP, what you can do in your classroom to support these students, and so much more.

19 Jan 2022How to Handle Critical Observation Feedback00:24:41

Formal observations are one of the things about teaching that really scares us as new teachers. They can send you right into panic mode, even if you have a really supportive administration. However, there is a way you can reframe how you view observation feedback that I want to share with you today. It will help you to feel more empowered and encourage you to take the next steps towards becoming the teacher that you’ve always dreamed of being.

04 Nov 20204 Steps to Get Shy Kids to Engage & Participate 08800:27:15

It can be hard enough to encourage shy kids to participate when we are teaching in our classroom, but throw in technical difficulties, a bad internet connection, and a lack of the subtle non-verbal communication we usually rely on in the form of a smile or a wink, and it becomes even harder to connect with and encourage these children to engage. Let's talk about how you can get these kiddos on board and participating!

21 Dec 2022Teachers Are Not Classroom Therapists with Elizabeth Peterson00:28:53

As teachers, we wear so many hats every single day. We are organizers, facilitators, cheerleaders, coaches, nurses, janitors, and so much more. Often, you may even feel like you’re expected to fit the role of “classroom therapist”. But here’s the thing - you aren’t a therapist, and you shouldn’t be expected to put that hat on.

I know how exhausting it can be to manage some of the personalities that you have in your classroom. When you signed up to be a teacher, you likely didn’t expect to be dealing with some of the behaviors and the challenges that you find inside your classroom. Yet, those behaviors and challenges are here, so what do you do? Our guest, Elizabeth Peterson is here to talk us through this and share some helpful strategies.

As teachers, we’re natural planners, both professionally and personally. That’s why it gives us immense stress when aspects of our life aren’t planned, so can you imagine what it’s like when things don’t go as you planned them? That brings us to a whole new level of stress.

But what if that unplanned moment brought you clarity? As crazy as that might be, it’s true! I believe that the gifts we need in life are actually revealed when things don’t go as we planned. I have my own personal experience with embracing the unexpected that I'm sharing with you, along with how this idea applies to you and your classroom right now.

28 Dec 2022How Walt Disney Would Manage Your Classroom - Part One00:22:46

There’s just something about being at Disney World that is completely magical. ✨ 🏰 The world feels brighter, and even as an adult, it brings back the best memories.

Now, I don’t want to take the magic away, but what you might not realize is that theme parks like Disney World are carefully and meticulously designed to create that magical experience for you. Here’s the really cool thing, though. We can learn a lot about these theme park experiences as educators. We can use these same elements to bring some of that magic into our classroom and to improve our classroom management.

So today as we head into a brand new year of possibilities, we’re going to get back to the basics and do a deep dive into your classroom management plan. We’re going to do that in a really fun way by talking about how Walt Disney himself would run your classroom throughout a three-episode series. This episode marks number one in the series, where we’ll focus on what we can learn from Walt Disney about creating a legendary layout for your classroom.

06 Jul 2022How to Know if You’re Ready for the School Year00:22:37

If you’re a new teacher, do you feel ready for the upcoming school year?

After student teaching, we quickly realize that much of the theory that we learned in college is much more difficult to apply. We start to see the gaps in what we learned in our university classes and how things actually play out inside the classroom. Still, we have a vision in our heads of how we're going to be an amazing teacher just like the amazing teachers we've had before us. But we underestimate, or are entirely unaware, of the careful strategic planning and years of experience that it really took for that to happen.

I want to help prepare you for the reality of this learning curve that you’re about to experience as a brand new teacher. Today I’m sharing some things that you’ll want to consider (that go beyond classroom set up) as you go into your first year of teaching.

09 Dec 2020Fast Finisher Challenges that Are NOT Busywork 09300:32:11

So many fast finisher activities are just designed just to keep kids busy, and I always thought that there must be a better way to use children’s time. I believe that children need more opportunities to flex their creative muscles, to think outside the box, to investigate and explore topics that may not be part of the curriculum, but that light kids up and inspire them to want to do more, be more, and think more creatively. Let's talk about how!

29 Sep 2021Pencil Management 10100:23:40

It's hilarious that I can devote an entire podcast episode to pencil management, but here we are! Truthfully, having a system in place for students' pencils is a critical piece of classroom management. If you have students who constantly lose their pencils, get up to the sharpen them at inappropriate times, or even eat them (ew, gross), then this episode is for you. :)

29 Jun 2022Find Your Tribe & Prepare Ahead for Crazy Back-to-School Busy00:28:06

The following sentence just might qualify as the understatement of the century...I think we might have a tendency to underestimate how hard it is to be a teacher when we've never had our own classroom before.

The truth is, we just don't realize how demanding this profession is until we're in it. So, with a new school year is approaching, I want to share the importance of finding your tribe and how to prepare for that crazy back-to-school busy.

BEGINNING TEACHER TALK
06 Sep 2023You're Doing Better Than You Think - Here's Proof00:22:17

If you’re a few weeks into the new school year, the harsh realities of teacher responsibilities and a constant overwhelming amount of stress have probably already sunk in. And unfortunately, when that happens, we begin to doubt ourselves which leads to comparing ourselves to more experienced teachers.

Likewise, as new teachers, we’re often told that our skills and quality instruction isn’t to the standards of those veteran teachers. However, I’m here to tell you the exact opposite! The findings from a new study in Australia Education Researcher will give you the positivity you’ve been searching for.

01 Jan 2020Narrative and Opinion Writing with Learning Experiments 04400:35:52

What are "Learning Experiments," you ask?

Well, in my classroom, they were systematic and super-fun, small changes that my students and I made to our learning environment to create the conditions for optimal learning.

In plain English, that meant doing small things like working in different spaces around the classroom or changing the kinds of lighting we were using in our classroom to see how that impacted students' ability to focus.

These changes led to some pretty inspired writing for my students - so much so, that I decided I needed to create a writing unit for you that you can try in your classroom, too!

02 Mar 2022Natural Consequences: Part Two00:28:35

In episode 159, I broke down what natural consequences are and I gave you some specific examples of how this works in your classroom. If you haven’t listened to that episode, I highly recommend that you go back and listen to that first because it is going to give you a foundation to what I’m discussing today! It’s important to be prepared to implement natural consequences, but what do you do if you have a student who continues to be disruptive, despite all your efforts? It might be time for some new strategies. Today I’m going to give you some very specific examples of how you can move from gentle reminders to firm consequences while you're teaching inside your classroom.
