20 May 2024 | 166. INTERVIEW: Kira Rockwell | 00:56:14
Hello listeners! This week's guest is Kira Rockwell! Kira (she/her) is a neurodivergent playwright, originally from the heart of Texas. Through a trauma informed, healing centered lens, she aims to nurture communal spaces that disrupt passivity and empower agency. This summer she will develop her play WICKED BITTER BEAST(S) with Alabama Shakespeare Festival. Her play, OH TO BE PURE AGAIN, was developed with The Kennedy Center, National New Play Network, and Great Plains Theatre Commons. It premiered at Actor’s Express in 2023 going on to win the Gene Gabriel Moore Playwriting Award. Rockwell's work is often based on her nuanced experiences growing up in "culty" Pentecostal Christian Communities. She is based in Atlanta with her creative husband and their sweet lab pit. When she’s not writing, she’s probably trying to talk to a caterpillar. Hello listeners! This week’s guest on the show is BEN STASNY! Ben is a second-year graduate student at CU Boulder. Ben's research is centered around queer theory, eco-criticism and performance studies. How can theatre act as a space for ethical action on queer and climate justice? We partnered with Climate Change Theatre Action out of New York City to bring this project to life. They were led by a group of courageous youth which culminated in a film and public performance titled Side by Side. Ben was a recipient of the Hazel Barnes Flat which brought bev to London, UK in November. While there, Ben led workshops on climate comedy with a local arts/science organization, Your Canal Boat CIC. Ben served as the Artistic Director for the 6th Annual New Plays Festival at CU Boulder in Spring 2021. Ben graduated with a BFA in Acting from Minnesota State University, Mankato. Every month, we pick a play or two to discuss, and this week's episode is a play called "The Two Kids That Blow Shit" by Carla Ching. We discuss what we noticed, what we liked, and questions that came up while reading the play. SPOILER ALERT: There are going to be some spoiler alerts! We highly recommend you read the play before listening to this episode! About the Play: Here’s what the play’s about which you can read on New Play Exchange: ”As kids, Max and Diana meet on their parents’ date, then are kicked out of the house so their parents can get it on. They are forced to play together even though they aren’t really that fond of each other. Through over two decades of their parents’ tumultuous relationship of getting together, breaking up, getting married and then divorced, Max and Diana are perpetually forced together and become the most unlikely of friends. They see each other through their own marriages and divorces, rehabs and spin-outs, career rejiggerings and epic life fails. But when they actually fall into each other, will they lose the only family they’ve ever known? A play about falling in and out of love with your best friend.” About the Playwright: An LA native, Carla Ching’s other plays include Revenge Porn or the Story of a Body, Nomad Motel, Fast Company, and The Sugar House at the Edge of the Wilderness. 26 Aug 2019 | 30. INTERVIEW: Write and Don't Judge What You Write with John Mabey | 00:45:25
Playwright, improviser and mental health counselor John Mabey joins us on this episode to discuss all things playwriting, theater, improv, and more. John is a listener of the show who reached out to us and we wanted to reach back to bring him on show! John began writing plays as a child before he knew that’s what he was doing. He’s spent the past 10 years living in New York, London and Amsterdam and now lives in the American South. He studied human behavior, emotion and relationships by earning a master’s degree in Counseling and Psychology, and infuses into his playwriting everything he’s learned about what it means to be human. In addition to plays, he also publishes in academic books and journals on the topics of sexual identity and spirituality. In playwriting, John enjoys experimenting with structure and uses improvisation as a way to generate creative ideas as well as its own art form. He now teaches and performs improvisation around the world with ensembles and as a solo act, and is a regular performer in true storytelling events. Last year, John co-authored a play that was produced in Amsterdam titled, The B Word, which had a successful 2-week run and multiple sold-out performances. Next month his short play, The Most Brave Girl In The Whole Wide World, is included in the Los Angeles play festival ‘A Light In Dark Places’ at the Stella Adler Theatre.
