Another brilliant indie game on the podcast this week, one that is much more cinematic than Vampire Survivors from last episode. Kena: Bridge of Spirits wowed me the first time I saw it. Its interesting looking world, pixar-like graphics and backing from Sony meant that this was a game that was going to put it up high on the Triple I indie game podium. 

However, can it live up to the hype? How good is Kena: Bridge of Spirits on the Playstation 5? Do the cinematics match with the gameplay? Find out in my Kena: Bridge of Spirits review!

If you have never heard of the game, it was released on the Wii all the way back in 2008 and was developed by Good-Feel, who interestingly are best known for creating educational games for the Japanese market. What is also interesting is that a digital version of the game was re-released on the Wii U eshop in 2016, so maybe if you are a Wii U owner, you might know the game from there. 

So what is Wario Land: Shake It, why is it seen as a hidden gem on the Nintendo Wii and is it a game Nintendo should remake or remaster and release on the Nintendo Switch 2? Let’s find out in this week’s episode of the Beat Your Backlog Podcast.

Goodbye Volcano High is an indie gem from 2023 I wish I'd played sooner. It's story is about a group of anthropomorphic dinosaurs faced with their senior year in high school also being their final year on Earth.

The game is filled with believable and likable characters, top notch voice acting and a fantastic story about these Dino-Humans trying to find their way through life, which very soon, might be coming to an end.

If you haven't done so already, pick up and play this game, it's fantastic.

In this weeks episode I commit the worst crime imaginable- tax evasion- in Snoozy Kazoo's wonderful indie gem- Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion. The game is a 2D Zelda-like with stunning art, bags of character and a fantastic story, which ends up in a completely different place to where I was expecting. Plus, the game only takes 2-3 hours to beat, so if you are looking to take a break from Tears of the Kingdom, I would highly suggest trying this turnip out!

Shocking, I know. As a kid I never grew up playing Mario games but tried to get into them as a teenager when the new 2D Super Mario Bros came out on the Nintendo DS. I never 'got' those games, they felt a little bit bland. . . so will Mario Wonder get me into 2D Mario games and is the game worth playing?

Spoilers: YES! This game is fantastic, Wonder is up there with the quality of Odyssey, the humor of the Mario movie and the sense of joy that comes with exploring a magical world, like in the Nintendo theme parks. In my opinion, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is the best 2D Mario game of the modern era.

There were some things I didn't like and way more things I loved, but you'll have to listen to the podcast to find out more about those ;)

This week we are aboard the starship Fedora 1, stranded at the bottom of the ocean on an alien planet, in Slowbros' magnificent hand crafted game Harold Halibut.

This game is an absolute must play and is my favourite game of 2024 so far, so make sure you check it out!

Indie or not indie? Well that is up to you. In this episode I will be discussing the hot potato topic of Dave the Diver and why the game didn't quite gel with me.

Is Dave the Diver one of the best indie or independent games of the year? I don't think so. The game has a lot of positives; it looks great, has a cool concept of hunting fish to serve in a sushi restaurant and it has tons of charm and flare. However, the gameplay itself feels like 'content'- it is over encumbered with gimmicky mechanics that give you something to do but don’t really elevate the base gameplay of the game.

It will be interesting to see how the game does at The Game Awards and if it comes away with the prize for Best Independent Game.

In Dredge you play as a lonely fisherman, on a voyage to find better waters and greater prosperity in the isolated village of Greater Marrow. On your trip over the turbulent seas, your vessel gets lost in a deep and dense fog, leading you to crash on the jagged rocks below Great Marrow’s lighthouse.

You survive the crash and are approached by the Mayor of the town, who is willing to sell you a broken and battered fishing vessel, in the agreement that you will sell fish to the local fishmonger. In doing so, you slowly pay off your debt for the boat and help rebuild the crumbling community, by re-opening the once derelict dry dock and restoring communication with the neighboring village of Little Marrow.

Everything seems to be going well, the town is thriving, you are slowly paying back your debt but something pulls at the back of your mind that not everything is as it seems in this quiet fishing town. The warnings not to go out at night are elevated by the strange red shimmers that appear above the water once the sun goes down. Unusual, deformed fish start to appear on your lines and in your nets, with bulbous eyes and sharp, human-like teeth that when brought to the local fishmonger, seem to excite him rather than terrify him. This is all brought to a head when a mysterious figure bangs on your port hole and tells you to visit him at his manor on the nearby Blackstone Isle. The man installs dredging equipment on your boat in exchange for your help finding peculiar relics from shipwrecks. Each relic you bring him, he promises, will help you enhance your boat and make more gold to pay off your debt. The search for relics leads you across the peninsula, to mangroves, volcanoes and sheer cliffs as you slowly creep into insanity, uncovering the terrors of the dark night and the horrors of the all encompassing deep.

When the game was first announced, fans hoped it would be the Pokémon Breath of the Wild open world game.

Gravity Rush is a very rare thing in the video game world; it was released as a PlayStation Vita exclusive. Hopes were high back in February 2012 when the game was released, just two months after the Vita itself launched. The game seemed to review well, with it sitting at an 83 on Metacritic, and reports at the time claimed the game had sold 200,000 units by August of 2012. The game even went on to be remastered for the PlayStation 4 by the prestigious remaster studio Bluepoint (the same developers behind the Demon's Souls PS5 remake), and a sequel, Gravity Rush 2, was released on the PS4 in 2017.

13, unlucky for some. Maybe that's why I was so negative in this episode!

I tried my hardest to play the most recent Xbox Game Studios release: Redfall. After about two hours I rage quit from the game and uninstalled it from my console. Redfall seems like a lot of good ideas taken from other games mixed into one but lacks any real focus, drive or direction. Its intriguing story and interesting location are marred by bad game design choices and the lack of the most basic gaming foundations like points on a map telling you where to go and animated cut scenes.

I hope this game continues to be worked on as I really wanted to like it and would love to come back to it in a year to try it again. However, in its current state, Redfall is not worth yours or my time.

What is going on with Xbox? How could they let such a game go out to the public? Is this a problem with designing games for Game Pass? After my Redfall impressions, I give my thoughts about what is going on with Xbox and why Starfield could be make or break for them.

‘Thou shalt get sidetracked by bullsh*t every goddamn time’

Yes, like most of the gaming world, I decided to head back into Bethesda's 2015 dystopian RPG after watching the Fallout series on Amazon Prime.

Bethesda itself seems to have come under a lot of scrutiny since they were purchased by Xbox. Just last week news broke that multiple of their studios would be closing, including Tango Gameworks, the creators of Hi-Rush and Arkane Austin, the creators of Redfall. In addition, the divisive nature of Starfield and the apparent failure of Fallout 76, leave many gamers questioning if Bethesda still has the charm and magic of the days of Skyrim and the earlier Fallout games.

However, after watching the Fallout show, it reminded me how special, weird and wonderful this universe is and had me chomping like a Ghoul on recently rotting flesh, to get back into its universe.

So, let's discuss if Bethesda still has the secret RPG sauce and why I decided to play Fallout 4 and not the beloved Fallout: New Vegas in this week’s episode of the Beat Your Backlog Podcast.

What did the the fox say?

This week I review Andrew Shouldice and Finji’s Tunic on the Xbox.

The game is a mixture off classic Zelda with a sprinkling of Souls-like sugar on top. What sets Tunic apart from other Zelda-likes is its innovative 'user manual' mechanic, which puts players in the shoes of a 90's gamer, playing an imported game in another language.

However, as innovative as the game is, I felt like I liked it less the more it went on, find out why in this week's podcast.

You're a wizard Adam!

On this episode I'm joined by my fellow game designer and colleague Kaspar as we discuss and review Warner Bro's Hogwarts Legacy. I decided to split the review in to two parts. This episode reviews the first 12-20 hours of the game and once Kaspar and I are finished with the game's story, we will record part 2.

We both played Hogwarts Legacy on Playstation 5 and are both big Harry Potter fans, but how will the game fit into the wider Wizarding World of Harry Potter and is it worth spending the 30-40 hours of play time to finish? Find out in our review!

It may be a smaller title but just like its main character Verm, Small Saga packs a punch. 

The setting of a rodent medieval kingdom under the streets of modern day London is genius and feels unique. If you have Small Saga on your 'to play' list, make sure you bump it up and play it now.

Today we are exploring the Unova region in our quest to become the very best, like no one ever was, in Game Freak and the Pokémon Company’s Pokémon White.

If you are a regular listener to the podcast, you will know that I recently reviewed Pokémon Scarlet, crowning it as my personal ‘best Pokémon game ever’. After posting my Quick Review of the game to Youtube, I got a lot of push back from Pokémon, how should we say. . .  enthusiasts, saying that Pokémon White was a better game because it has a better story.

Today we will be facing our seven-not-so-evil exes in Outerloop Games and Annapurna Interactives’ Thirsty Suitors. The best way to describe this game is a mix between Scott Pilgrim vs the World and the TV show Sex education, with turn-based battles and Tony Hawk-like skateboarding thrown in to add some spice to this already well seasoned game.

Its story of a 20-something Indian-American woman called Jala returning to her hometown with her tail between her legs is edgy, horny, touching and funny.

Though I don’t think the game nails exactly what it is going for, it is nevertheless one of the most interesting indies I have played this year and is a must play for anyone ticking games off of their best of 2023 list.

Which is shown in its Metracrtic scores sitting at an 80, 75, 77 and 75 on PC, Switch, Xbox and PS5 respectively.

HLTB has the game at around 8 hours for its story and around about 17 hours for completionist, so it is a quite short game if you plan to fit it in before the end of the year. What's more, if you have Xbox Games Pass, at the time of recording it is available there and that is where I played it.

But what makes Thirsty Suitors so interesting, why did it not quite nail the mark in my eyes and what is so damn horny about it? Let’s find out in this week’s episode of the Beat Your Backlog Podcast.

Today, I’m traveling back in time and rekindling my love for a real time strategy classic- Age of Empire II. As a teenager, I was obsessed with the original Age of Empires II. I spent hundreds of hours playing the game back on an old PC that my grandad built for me, and would experiment with every aspect of the game from the story campaigns to building my own maps. I even remember buying the PS2 port of the game and thinking what a waste of money it was because the mouse and keyboard controls had not translated well to the dualsense.

Since then I've always wished that a good version of the game was available on console and now I can finally say that is the case. Find out why Age of the Empires II: Definitive Edition is the best version of this game and how Forgotten Empires translated the magic of this classic PC game to the Xbox.

Ravenlok is the new indie game from Cococucumber that debuted on Xbox Game Pass earlier this month. It's an action adventure game set within the lore of Alice in Wonderland but has its own unique story and gorgeous art style that makes this game one of the best looking indie games, ever.

However, the game is lacking in some respects like its combat and quest system but if you have a few hours to spare, have Game Pass and need a break from Zelda, I suggest trying it out.

I was surprised when Nintendo announced that Super Mario RPG was getting a remake. I thought because of licensing, it would be lost to the annals of time as one of those weird 90s collaborations, a bit like the Sony Nintendo, that happened but would never happen again.

Therefore, I was very excited to play Super Mario RPG remake and after playing it, I think it is one of my favourite games on the Nintendo Switch.

Old McAdam had a farm. . .

In this week's episode I pick up my hoe, pickaxe and scythe and head out to my Grandpa's old farm in Concerned Ape's Stardew Valley. It ain't much but it's honest work and I can't get enough of it in this game, it's so fun (and addictive) to play.

Stardew Valley is arguably the best farming/life style sim there is and has surpassed games like Story of Seasons and Harvest Moon that inspired its maker Eric Barone. In this episode I explore why that might be and what makes this game as relevant today as it was in its initial release back in 2011.

With the announcement that Chapter 3 and 4 of Deltarune will be releasing in 2025, I decided to go back and play the first two chapters of Toby Fox's weird and wonderful game.

But after seven years (crazy) since the first chapter's release is it worth playing Deltarune in 2025?

With a name like Caravan SandWitch, I had a lot of questions about what this game was. The caravan seemed clear because there is a van very clearly shown in the game’s key art but a SandWitch? Eh? Today we will be climbing, hand by hand, piton by piton up a sheer cliff in Don’t Nod’s Jusant and will be doing a quick round up of Nintendo’s recent Indie World presentation.

Jusant- pronounced zhu-sahn is a French word meaning ‘ebbing tide’. Pretty much as soon as you enter Don’t Nod’s stunning new game, you realise why they gave it this name.

The world is desolate, a place that once flourished with life has quite literally dried up as the ocean recedes, leaving a desert in its wake. Your task is to climb the Tower and as you do, you learn the fate of the civilization that once clung to its rocks.

Nintendo came out and blew us away yesterday with their Mario mania Nintendo Direct.

2023 has gone from one of the weaker looking years for the Nintendo Switch to one of the strongest with the announcement of Super Mario Wonder, Super Mario RPG, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet DLC and Pikmin 4.

In this episode I also talk about my video game experiences during my holiday in Japan and what the Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan is really like.

Hi-Fi Rush is the new action-rhythm game announced and released during the Xbox and Bethesda Developer Direct in January. The game has been reviewing well and is a total shift in what Tango Gameworks usually makes, but is it any good?

Today we are investigating the mystery of the salami bandit in Happy Broccoli’s charming deDUCKtion indie game Duck Detective: The Secret Salami.

I had been playing Paper Mario and the thousand year door at the time and Duck Detective’s art style was obviously inspired by that series and the steam page said the game only takes between 2-3 hours to beat.

So let's try to QUACK the case and find out if you should give Duck Detective: The Secret Salami a try.

This week we are checking out Thunderful's newest addition to the SteamWorld franchise, SteamWorld Build. The game is the SteamWorld version of a city-builder and like with other games in the SW franchise, it takes a pre-existing genre, adds a twist and the SW charm to it. and makes itself stand out from the competition.

The game is perfect for city-builder newbs, especially if you have Xbox Game Pass, but might feel like a city-builder lite to veterans of the genre.
