On this 'Round Up' episode of the Banned Biographies Podcast, host - Tom Austin-Morgan - thanks Will Crewdson for being such a great guest and interviewee last month as well as reviewing the Adam Ant gig he went to in Brighton where he saw Will doing his thing.
Will's an absolutely amazing musician and as you heard on the interview a very thoughtful man and serious about what he does. But I can attest that he’s an absolute beast to watch live.

There were many singles and albums released this month and Tom reviews many of them, including singles from The Cult, Anti-Flag, Placebo, Pixies, Dropkick Murphys, Less Than Jake and Disturbed. More in depth album reviews include Anthem by Flogging Molly, SOLIDARITINE by Gogol Bordello, The Cage EP by Billy Idol, Sonics In The Soul by Buzzcocks and shamelessly plugs his own band's re-release of Apathyville by High Frequency.

On this roundup episode of the Banned Biographies Podcast, your host, Tom Austin-Morgan, is back to let you know what’s been going on since the Broken Record Player Podcast episode went out, where we dissected Daft Punk's 2001 iconic album Discovery, and what you can expect from the next one.
Firstly, I’d like to once again thank Ryan for allowing me to post his episode on my feed. I hope you enjoyed something a little different with Ryan and I talking about an electronic music album from the 21st century and I really hope it made a few of you go and check out The Broken Record Player Podcast. If you have subscribed, do let him know that you found out about him through this podcast.
Go and leave him a review on Apple Podcasts, and while you’re there, why not leave you on the Banned Biographies page as well? I love hearing about what you think of the show, your occasional links to the bands and musicians I feature and more than that, simply about you. So, please do reach out and get in touch on social media, but most of all please leave a review, it really does help get the show noticed by more people when they’re looking for music podcasts to listen to.
The news this month is a little light, though it includes a long rant from Jello Biafra and also includes the fact that Banned Biographies has joined the Pantheon Podcast Network! I also review a bunch of songs that were released in the last month.
Until next time, take care and stay safe.

01 Dec 2023 | Interview with Pete Trainor (Author of 'Calling All The Dreamers' - The Untold Story of Electrasy) | 01:18:55
This episode of the Banned Biographies podcast is a very special interview with Pete Trainor, a designer, product-innovator, author, strategist, applied data specialist, technologist, suicide prevention campaigner, and massive music fan. He talks all over the world on creative and social technologies, data, Ai and the physiological and psychological effects on their audiences.
However, in 2023 he zigged when many would zag, and published his second book, ‘Calling All The Dreamers‘. The remarkable true story about a Britpop band called Electrasy who went crashing through the record industry, but were ultimately halted by technology and shifting human-behaviour.
Pete got in contact with me a few months ago about the book and wondered if I’d like to read it with a view to arranging an interview with Electrasy. That will still happen in the future, but what struck me about the book was the level of fandom he has for this little known band from his home town of Yeovil and why he felt he needed to tell the story. For many of us I felt that this would be the perfect entry level to the Electrasy story and will certainly inform the direction of the interview with the band in the near future.
In this conversation we not only talk about the book and the career of Electrasy, we also get into what drives fandom, life in provincial towns, the pros and cons of technology in life (let alone the music industry) and Pete’s role as a technologist and professional speaker, which goes deep.
‘Calling All The Dreamers’ is now available in paperback and Electrasy’s debut album, Beautiful Insane’ has been re-released using AI technology from the original studio demos from 1998. So be sure to visit electrasy.co.uk where you can buy Beautiful Insane, their other music, merch and Pete’s book 'Calling All The Dreamers', alternatively, you could visit Pete’s website trainor.fyi to buy any of his books, see some of his amazing work and watch his various talks, they’re well worth it.

13 Jan 2023 | Interview with Laurie Black (Solo Musician and Cabaret Compère) | 01:15:05
On this special interview episode of the Banned Biographies podcast, Tom Austin-Morgan talks to synthrock cabaret musician and compère Laurie Black.
This conversation came around quickly, despite the fact that I saw her supporting Adam Ant on the Antics tour last summer. We were both busy in the mean time, but today Laurie her releasing her latest single, Spacejunk. Though the song is a year old, the subject (Elon Musk) just keeps getting more controversial. Spacejunk is available to download and stream now wherever you get your music digitally.
Laurie is a really cool person and artist with strong views on a number of topics which are evident in her music and stage act. I can't recommend enough making time to listen to her music and to try to catch a live performance, which for those of you in Australia will be easy as Laurie is performing at the Melbourne and Adelaide fringe festivals from February to April, so you really have no excuse!
You can find out all about her, her music and tour dates at laurieblack.co.uk or find her on Facebook and Instagram. You can find her music on all the usual streaming sites.
The new single, 'Spacejunk', can be found here: laurieblack.co.uk/music
Laurie is an independent artist, so male sure you check out the merch section of the website and buy some of her stuff, from music to lampshades – it’ll make sense in the interview which I hope you enjoy listening to as much as I did having it.

11 Sep 2023 | The Rise And Fall And Rise Again: A Brief History of Madness (Part 1) | 02:52:53
In 1976 school friends Mike Barson and Lee Thompson formed a band called the North London Invaders, roping in other friends of theirs Chris Foreman, John Hasler and Cathal Smyth to play rock n roll and soul songs. The line-up was a tumultuous one and only solidified two years later when Hasler was eventually replaced on drums by Daniel Woodgate, Mark Bedford replacing Smyth on bass with Smyth becoming a brass player, dancer and singer and lead singer Graham McPherson aka Suggs finally decided to commit rather than watch Chelsea play football. They also adopted a new name, Madness, after a song by ska/reggae legend Prince Buster.
Thus was born a band that became one of the most prominent bands of the late 1970s and early 1980s two-tone ska revival. Madness have had 16 singles reach the UK top ten and between 1980 to 1986, the band's songs spent a total of 214 weeks on the UK Singles Chart.
Their music videos showcased them as a fun gang that kids and adults alike wanted to be a part of with flying saxophonists and nutty trains. But, behind the scenes in-fighting and constantly butting up against their label boss, as well as incredible success, put pressure on the band which caused rifts and breakups over the years.
This episode of Banned Biographies deals with this heady first decade and the rise and fall of one of the most beloved British bands to ever strut their stuff.

01 Jan 2023 | Interview with Zach Blair (Rise Against, GWAR, Only Crime, Armstrong, Hagfish) | 00:52:25
Welcome to this very special interview episode of the Banned Biographies Podcast where your host, Tom Austin-Morgan, talks to Zach Blair, the lead guitarist of Rise Against. I met Zach on the ferry back from both our European tours in November and he was such a gentleman. He gave me a lot of time and asked about the tour, about my podcast and told me about his own brilliant podcast, Anti-Heroes with Zach Blair, upon which he talks with other guitarists that he admires about their guitars, set ups and equipment. He also told me about the other bands he’s played in including Hagfish, Armstrong, Only Crime, and GWAR, some of which he talks about on this episode.
Zach is such a great guy and so full of stories, as you would expect from someone who has been doing this for as long as he has. I'm so thankful to him for talking to me, even though this is a shorter than usual episode due to how busy Zach is. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I had having it.
If you have any additional questions after listening that I didn't have time to ask him, perhaps I’ll be able to entice him back on in future and put them to him. Until then, if you want more Zach chat, go and subscribe to his podcast, and let him know I sent you, so he knows you heard him on here and he knows this is a good place for him to come back.

01 Jul 2023 | Interview with David Green (Moonraker) | 01:13:05
On this episode of the Banned Biographies podcast host, Tom Austin-Morgan, chats to David Green, drummer in US pop punk band Moonraker.
Moonraker has been a unit since 2011 releasing numerous singles and EPs and three full-length albums, the most recent of which – The Forest – was released in May 2022. To celebrate the anniversary of this album, and to get us ready for new music, Moonraker has released a new video for the song 'I Really Wanted To' where the band face off against another team in a deadly game of whirleyball.
We talk about what the hell Whirley ball is as well as David's musical inspirations, what’s wrong with a certain retiring punk band, secret hotel room vandalism, why pop music is benefitting from ‘going punk’, and much more.

10 Feb 2023 | Interview with High Frequency | 01:40:39
On this special interview episode of the Banned Biographies podcast Tom not only plays host and interviewer, but also interviewee alongside High Frequency bandmates, Antony Collett and Martin ‘Corky’ Cork.
The reason for this very indulgent episode is because we have a self-recorded, self-mixed three-track E.P. called ‘Some Songs You May Have Heard… But Not Like This!’, which is out right now on all streaming platforms. The songs included on the E.P. are re-recorded versions of songs that were either incompletely recorded or never made it on to any previous album or E.P.
The other thing the songs have in common is, as you may be able to tell from the title, that we’ve continued to play them in our live set, even all these years later. As well s covering the E.P., we give a potted history of the band, warts and all.
I hope you can forgive this blatant self-promotion, I promise I won’t make a habit of this kind of thing… until we release the full-length album we're working on anyway!
Find High Frequency on whatever streaming service you use to listen to your music, add the songs (and maybe even some of the old ones) to your public playlists, and share them on social media. I hope you enjoy this chat as much as we did having it.

Over the years, he’s also worked with US singer Johnette Napolitano, Flesh for Lulu, Chiefs Of Relief The Selecter, Bow Wow Wow, Sigue Sigue Sputnik Electronic and has collaborated with US director/writer Tom DiCillo as one half of The Black and Blue Orkestre.
He’s also done session work with Malcolm McLaren, Tom Jones, Bryan Ferry, Peter Murphy, Westworld, Celine Dion, Appleton, Pigface, Tyler James, Livan, T-Rexstasy, Billy Bragg and Dragons.
As you can tell, there was a lot of ground to cover and I didn't want to keep him all day, but I managed to touch on most of the acts he does or has played with. I really hope you enjoy this chat as much as I did having it and if there's anything you'd like an expanded chat about do let me know at the contact details below and I'll see about arranging a follow-up interview in future.

13 Dec 2022 | Tom's Sham 69 European Tour Diary: Part 2 - with co-host Smokey | 02:25:19
Smokey joins Tom once more on the Banned Biographies Podcast for the second episode recounting tales from the diary Tom kept while touring around Europe with Sham 69.
This episode covers the last seven gigs in the same number of days of the tour, more highs, lows, malfunctioning equipment, as well as continuing to meet amazing people in amazing venues and incredible bands. However, the spectre of the war in Ukraine reared its head a number of times in this last half of the tour. I met Poles, Russians and Ukrainians all suffering in some way as well as a Columbian with a similar story of escaping from a civil war only to be told by the German government that all is well and he may have to go back to his home country, despite the fact that all is still not well there. Fun times were also had and, thankfully outweighed the sad stories, and I met a genuine rock star on the way home!
Bands highlighted in this episode include:
The Herbärds
The Amuse Girls
Violent Instinct
Viciou (So new they don't seem to have a website/social media/bandcamp)
Kommando Marlies (the pronunciation of which I butchered in the episode, sorry guys!)
Smokey hosts the movie podcasts Rated H (a horror movie podcast), All The Best Lines (a golden age of cinema podcast) and House Of Hammer (reviewing all the Hammer films in order). Go subscribe to those too, you won't regret it (and let him know you did so through this show).

24 Nov 2023 | October and November News and Reviews | 01:00:08
Apologies for not releasing an episode last month, I’ve been putting the finishing touches to my new office as well as gigging and recording with my bands, so I didn’t have the time to get anything done, in fact I had to postpone a few interviews because of it all which is a reflection of how little time I’ve had.
I'm back now though to let you know what's been going on and what you can expect on the next episode, which will be released next week.
The news in this episode revolves around festival line up announcements, tour date announcements and cancellations, new album announcements, the controversy around the buy-out and subsequent lay-offs at Bandcamp, guitarist Jeff Schroeder quitting The Smashing Pumpkins, blink-182 playing a gig in a diner, Blondie's Chris Stein releasing an autobiography, Rat Scabies re-joining The Damned, and Shane MacGowan's ongoing health issues.
Singles and EPs by Millie Manders and the Shut Up, Feeder, Cherym, The Sleeping Souls, Bad Cop/Bad Cop, IDLES, Alkaline Trio, Sleaford Mods, Sigrid, Bob Vylan, Grade 2, The Beatles, Deap Valley, Pendulum, and Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes are reviewed.
Album reviews include: The Darker The Shadow The Brighter The Light by The Streets, Paint My Bedroom Black by Holly Humberstone, We Stand Against You by Mondo Generator, Be Lucky by Death Of Guitar Pop, Doom Loop by Dream Nails, Angst Music by Laurie Black, Hackney Diamonds by Rolling Stones, One More Time... by blink-182, Danse Macabre by Duran Duran, History Books by The Gaslight Anthem, 2RUFF, Vol. 1 by Chase & Status, and the sublime Theatre of the Absurd presents C'est La Vie by Madness.

01 Oct 2022 | Interview with Rich Wilson (Comedian) | 01:53:00
On this very special interview episode of the Banned Biographies Podcast, Tom talks to Rich Wilson, an award winning comedian who has performed sell out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe, Adelaide Fringe, Melbourne Comedy Festival and the New Zealand Comedy Festival.
Rich is also the host of the Insane In The Men Brain Podcast where he talks to funny and interesting people about their experiences with mental health. In the last year the podcast has been nominated for an award with Podbible and in 2019 won an award with JOE for best podcast.
Rich is the first comedian I’ve had on Banned Biographies and the reason for that is that I hear him bring up music on his podcast fairly often and his guests don't often indulge him - plus the fact he has a show on Islington Radio called The Tuned Up Time Machine - so, I reached out to ask of he’d like to have a long form conversation about music and he jumped at the chance, which was flattering.
In this conversation we talk about his favourite bands, best gigs he’s ever been to and played, the best and worst things about music (including how shit Sex On Fire by Kings Of Leon is!), the similarities between musicians and comedians, how society is too clean and safe right now, and so much more as well as a fair bit about his career in comedy.
This was such an easy, free-wheeling conversation to have and I’m so grateful to Rich for giving up a couple of hours of his day to shoot the breeze with me about a subject that’s clearly dear to both our hearts.
If this is your first time listening to Banned Biographies, I do audio documentaries on bands, a lot of which we touch upon in this episode, and I’ve interviewed musicians in bands such as Sham 69, Ash, The Prodigy, English Dogs, Adam Ant’s solo bands, and session musicians for The Selecter, Bow Wow Wow, The Dandy Warhols, Sigue Sigue Sputnik, and many more, so be sure to subscribe on your podcast platform of choice and check out the back catalogue. There’s something there for everyone.
You can find out all about him and where he’s gigging at richwilsoncomedian.com, listen to Insane In The Men Brain podcast wherever you listen to your podcasts and listen to The Tuned Up Time Machine on Spotify or on MixCloud.

29 Oct 2021 | Interview with Gizz Butt (Janus Stark, ex-The Prodigy, ex-English Dogs, ex-Steve Ignorant, one time Foo Fighters and many more) | 01:45:34
On this special interview episode of the Banned Biographies podcast, Tom chats with Gizz Butt, lead guitarist and singer with the band Janus Stark. Gizz has also played in a number of bands including The Prodigy, English Dogs, Steve Ignorant of Crass’s live band, The Fields of the Nephilim, The Destructors, Sabbat and a whole lot more, including a couple of appearances on stage with Foo Fighters.
Gizz was really generous with his time and we cover a lot of ground and he even plays a few songs live including a version of The Prodigy’s Fuel My Fire which never made the final edit. I also manage to point out something fishy on his Wikipedia which causes a lot of laughter but also opens up the more sensitive side of this life-long punk rocker.
Make sure to visit www.janusstark.co.uk or www.gizzbutt.com or find them on all the social media platforms. And, if you like what you hear of Gizz’s playing (and why wouldn’t you?), you can go to www.patreon.com/GizzButt, to gain access to loads of songs, pictures and videos from all his bands right back to his first school band when he was 12!
Once again, my sincerest thanks to Gizz for his time, for being such a brilliant guy to talk to and for all his wise words, which anyone thinking of starting a band, as well as anyone who has been in bands for years, should take on board.
Thanks for listening, stay safe and take care.

28 May 2021 | Interview with Louise Aubrie | 01:05:00
On this episode of the Banned Biographies podcast I sat down over Zoom to interview punk and indie inspired solo artist Louise Aubrie. Louise is from London, where she began writing and recording music, playing in venues like the 100 Club and the O2 Centre. Since then she has lived in New York City where she continued to hone her craft becoming a regular in venues like The Bitter End and The Bowery Electric.
During her career, Louise has recorded at the legendary Abbey Road Studios and has worked with Boz Boorer (musical director and co-writer for Morrissey), Andy Woodard (drummer for Adam Ant, New Model Army), Tom Edwards (guitarist for Adam Ant, Edwyn Collins), Roger Joseph Manning Jr (keyboards for The Killers, Beck, Morrissey), David Ruffy (drummer for The Ruts, The Waterboys), James Knight (producer for The Kooks, Kirsty MacColl), Ken Sluiter (mixer/engineer for Morrissey, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sum 41, Marc Almond), Cam Blackwood (producer/engineer for George Ezra, Jack Savoretti) and Dave Collins (mastering for Jane’s Addiction, No Doubt, Weezer).
Louise’s fifth album, ‘Antonio’, will be released later in 2021. But, it's first single, 'Last', is out today, so make sure you go and buy it from wherever you get your music from.
Louise Aubrie is an incredible songwriter and, more than that, a warm and funny person and I think that’s captured in this chat which I hope you enjoy listening to as much as I did having it.

21 Mar 2021 | Paul Brightman of Sham 69 Interview Review | 00:08:32
I’ve had some great feedback on the Paul Brightman interview over the last month. I even got a comment from the drummer in Paul’s band, Swampstomper, who was surprised by a couple of details in the interview despite having known Paul for years. That’s great to hear from an interviewer’s point of view because it means I was asking the right questions.
Speaking of which, I did a massive shoutout to other podcasts last month but completely forgot to say that I was going to be guesting on one. In February I appeared on All The Best Lines Podcast to talk about the Cary Grant film His Girl Friday. Do go and find the episode and let the hosts Smokey and Adam know that I sent you.
I’ll also be telling you about some of the new music I’ve been listening to recently and, of course, will let you know the subject of the next episode that will be out on Friday 26th March.
I really enjoyed speaking with Paul on the last episode of Banned Biographies and learned a hell of a lot from him. As I’ve said before, I’m looking to do a few more interview episodes in the future and am in conversation with a few musicians right now about appearing. If there’s anyone you’d like me to chat to, why not get in touch and let me know, maybe even @ them in on social media as well. If you happen to know anyone of note, please do get in touch.
While you're waiting for the next episode to drop on Friday 26th February 2021, why not go and leave a rating and review on iTunes, they really do help and you get a special shout out on these review episodes. But most of all, I hope you enjoy the next episode. Take care and stay safe.

31 Jul 2020 | The Scream - The Spellbinding Siouxsie and the Banshees | 03:05:16
It was Malcolm McLaren who provided Susan Ballion and Steven Bailey the opportunity to form a band when he asked if they knew any bands who might want to support the Sex Pistols at the 100 Club at his Punk Festival on 16 September 1976 as an act had pulled out at the last minute. "To say no would have been impossible".
Ballion had already renamed herself Siouxsie Sioux by this time and Bailey (though known as Steve Spunker at that first gig) soon chose the stage name of Steven Severin. The early Banshees played an improvised 24 minute rendition of The Lord's Prayer at the 100 Club, playing with Marco Pirroni on guitar and Sid Vicious on drums, because they didn't have the time to learn any songs... or even their instruments.
The Pistols may have been punk's ground zero; but the most overlooked thing about Siouxsie is that she arrived quite independently, and fully-formed into that maelstrom year of 1976. Before anyone even uttered the words punk rock, in 1975 she was already strutting off on the bus to the Roxy dressed outrageously, and drawing threatening stares. She was one of the handful who'd been waiting for punk to happen, and who became one of its crucial catalysts.
She was at the epicentre of the scene, the so-called Bromley Contingent who discovered the Sex Pistols and who added the fanbase glamour that the band needed. She was the one who arrived topless at their shows, shocking even the Pistols' entourage. She was the one whose snarky tongue sparked the famous Bill Grundy incident on national TV when she wound the presenter up by saying, "I always wanted to meet you," sparking the exchange which ended in Steve Jones calling Grundy a "dirty fucker" - creating the moment which thrust the Pistols, and Siouxsie, into the national consciousness.
But arguably Siouxsie's influence runs much deeper than punk. It was her band, The Banshees, that provided the impetus for Robert Smith to reinvent The Cure and when the goth scene arrived in the early 1980s, Siouxsie was right at its centre.
However, despite Siouxsie and the Banshees' prolific output in the 20 years they were together, they never quite fit the mainstream. Their modal melodies and spacious textures may have passed a baton to a generation of bands like U2, and their lush, darkly expressionistic lyrics may have laid the groundwork for Goth, but the Banshees' work never sat happily alongside that of their back-to-basics punk contemporaries. they have always remained more influential than successful. Even today you don’t hear their music as much as you do The Clash, Sex Pistols or The Cure. But, in a way that feels exactly how it should be.
Join me on a deep dive into the lives and careers of Siouxsie, Steven, Budgie and an array of guitarists and drummers, in this tale of highs, lows, addiction, obsession and rebirth.

20 Sep 2021 | James Cruttwell Interview Review and An Exciting Announcement | 00:10:44
Hello and welcome back to Banned Biographies, Tom Austin-Morgan is back to talk about what’s been going on since the interview with James Cruttwell was released last month and what you can expect from this months’ episode. There’s quite a bit to tell you, so strap in!
I thought it was interesting to hear about what James and I expected the end of the year to look like compared to how it actually is. For example, how long it would take people to return to feeling normal in everyday situations after lockdown was lifted. We were both looking forward to getting back to playing and attending gigs again, but worried that we might feel a bit uncomfortable in those environments again, or that it might take people a long time to feel comfortable in crowd environments.
It turns out that a lot of people seem to have clicked back into their pre-covid ruts straight away, which I guess shouldn’t have been a surprise. But what has surprised me is that, having played a few gigs now with my own bands, I feel more excited to be at a gig again than I am anxious.
James and I have since met in real life and I’m glad to report he was just as easy to chat to and excitable as he was on the episode.
I'm now the bass played for Sham 69! So, you can listen to how that happened on this episode.
Also, Swampstomper is playing at the Hope and Anchor, Islington, London on Saturday 25th September 2021 supporting Janus Stark, whose front-man and guitarist, Gizz Butt, used to play live guitar for The Prodigy and appears on The Fat Of The Land. It’s going to be an amazing gig. If you’re able to come down, I’d highly advise it.
Please do reach out to Banned Biographies on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or by email as well as leaving those ratings and reviews on Apple Podcasts, but more than anything else take care and stay safe.

01 Mar 2022 | Identity - The X-Ray Spex Story | 01:41:18
The girl who would grow up to be Poly Styrene, Marianne Joan Elliott-Said was one of three mixed race siblings living with their single mother and growing up in South London in the 1960s, which was - to put it lightly - not an environment known for racial tolerance.
She always felt different, not just in the way the she looked but in the way she thought too. A conventional life was not for her.
After building a relationship with an older man who also became her manager, she struck out to form a band, inspired - as so many young punks were - by watching the Sex Pistols. X-Ray Spex was born shortly afterwards.
Between 1976 and 1979, X-Ray Spex released just five singles and one album. Nevertheless, "Oh Bondage Up Yours!", is now acknowledged as a classic punk rock single and Germfree Adolescents is widely acclaimed as a classic album of the punk rock genre.
X-Ray Spex was one of the most inventive, original and genuinely exciting groups to emerge during the punk era. And fronted by Poly Styrene, the first woman of colour in the UK to front a successful rock band who was without question, one of Punk's most influential, colourful and greatest artists whose effect is still felt on bands today as well as the riot grrrl and afropunk movements.
Though she fought with mental health issues throughout here life as well as getting heavily involved in religion for a long period, it was cancer that eventually took her from us at tb he age of just 53. However, in her short life she introduced the world to a new sound of rebellion, using her unconventional voice to sing about identity, consumerism, postmodernism, and everything she saw unfolding in late 1970s Britain, with a rare prescience. And contrary to her claims in the song I Am A Cliché, she certainly wasn't.
Join me on the psychedelic, day-glo story of X-Ray Spex.

30 Mar 2022 | X-Ray Spex Review, Punk Rock News and Album Reviews | 00:26:40
Your host Tom Austin-Morgan is back to let you know what's been going on since the last episode and what you can expect from the next one... or possibly two!
There's also all the news from the world of punk including stories about KRS-One, Steve Ignorant, Alice Bag, Richie Ramone, Loose Articles, Sick Of It All, Blondie and The Damned, Bauhaus, Shane MacGowan, The Sewer Cats, John Doe, MC5, Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys, Weezer, The Last Gang, The Lunachicks, The Gaslight Anthem and Roxy Music.
There's also a load of acts that have cancelled their gigs in Ukraine and Russia due to the continuing war there and, sadly, there have been a number of deaths as well.
Additionally, there are reviews of three albums: Love Sux by Avril Lavigne (Is she cynically going back to pop punk from her more recent acoustic pop sound due to the resugence of early-2000s pop punk?), Torpedo by Feeder (have they finally gone back to the heavy grunge of their early albums like they keep saying they will?) and Never Let Me Go by Placebo (is this their best album since The Meds?).
By sure to get in touch on social media or email and do to Apple Music to leave a rating and review, it's the podcast's second birthday, after all! Until next time, take care and stay safe.

25 Apr 2022 | Them Fantasies and The Sewer Cats Round Up, Punk Rock News and Wet Leg Album Review | 00:16:07
Once again, Tom Austin-Morgan, your host is back to let you know what’s been going on this month since the last two episodes went out, what's going on the world of punk rock and what you can expect from next months episode.
Firstly, I’d like to extend my grateful thanks to both Them Fantasies and The Sewer Cats. Both conversations were really interesting, enlightening and fun, I hope you’ll agree, and despite the fact that the music they make is poles apart, both bands' conviction in their art and enthusiasm when talking about it were utterly infectious and inspiring.
Previous guest, Louise Aubrie, has relocated to LA to start writing and recording new material. Meanwhile, she’s released a new video for the song Dark from the album Antonio which she came on the show to talk about last year. Check it out in the back catalogue.
I've guested on the Love That Album podcast, which is a brilliant show that I’ve listened to for years. The host, Maurice, and a guest – in this case me – discuss a variety of great albums from the rock, jazz or folk genres in some depth. The episode is available now, which is apt because it corresponds with the 44th anniversary of the first Rock Against Racism concert at Victoria Park on the 30th April 1978 which featured, among others, the Tom Robinson Band. The episode is about their first album Power In The Darkness, although it also deals with the political and environmental history of the time because a lot of that fed into the themes of the album. It was a delightful chat with someone who has such a wealth of knowledge and made me feel most welcome, do go and find Love That Album podcast and listen not just to the episode I’m on, but rifle through the back catalogue, there’ll certainly be a lot you’ll be familiar with, but there are some great surprises to be had too. Thanks Maurice!
I review just the one album this month; Wet Leg's debut, self-titled album that came out at he beginning on the month. Is it full of repetitive, flash in the pan indie nothingness or is it as goods as I hoped it would be?
By sure to get in touch on social media or email and do to Apple Music to leave a rating and review, it's the podcast's second birthday, after all! Until next time, take care and stay safe.

28 Nov 2020 | Teenage Kicks: The Story of The Undertones | 02:00:16
It all started on a two-week camping trip in County Donegal, Northern Ireland in August 1974. Friends Michael Bradley, Billy Doherty and brothers Vince and John O’Neill decided they wanted to start a band. The group had existed as an idea for about six months in the minds of John, Vince and Billy.
For a while, the unnamed group hade no instruments with which to practice, so there were no songs either. But it didn't stop them discussing the future of the band, who would play what instrument, and what kind of songs they were going to make.
There was one more obvious problem that needed to be overcome: They didn't have a singer. Doherty invited local Irish Dancing legend and choir boy, Feargal Sharkey to join as singer and soon The Undertones were born, playing scout halls, school halls and social clubs before their big break.
This unlikely group of lads from Derry, a town which was in the midst of getting over the Bloody Sunday shootings of 1972, made a point of rebelling against the fervent political and sectarian turmoil of their surroundings by making some of the most innocent, pop-influenced music of all the 1970s punk bands, a couple of which have stood the test of time and feature on compilations to this day.
Teenage dreams really are hard to beat.

25 Dec 2020 | Interview with the Pete Shelley Memorial Campaign | 01:18:17
In a change to our regular programming, instead of a documentary about an iconic band this month, I bring you the first in what I hope will be a regular feature of the podcast peppered between the documentaries.
In this episode I sat down over Zoom to chat with Paul Lally, Paul Banks and Ellie Porter from the Pete Shelley Memorial Campaign.
Lally set the group up two years ago after Shelley passed away in order to commemorate the singer with a blue plaque on his childhood home. £12,000 and a lot of fundraising activities later, the plaque was unveiled on 4th December 2020 by Malcolm Garrett, the artist who was recently awarded an MBE and designed early Buzzcocks album and single covers.
The Campaign isn't stopping there though, in this interview you'll find out what other plans they have for the years ahead as well as some personal stories including how they each discovered the music of Pete Shelley, Buzzcocks and punk in general.

30 Jul 2021 | Interview with Jack pop (Alcopop! Records) | 01:30:44
This interview episode of the Banned Biographies podcast is a great conversation with Jack Pop, founder of the Alcopop! Record label. I was made aware of Alcopop! at the beginning of the year when I spoke to The Stepney Sisters about the release of their debut album, 50 years after forming, which was put out by Alcopop!.
I then did a bit of reading on the label’s website and couldn’t believe the story about its forming thanks to a bet on the result of a football match. If you’ve not heard of the label, British listeners will probably remember when the UKIP (UK Independence Party’s) website was taken over and covered in unicorns and rainbows? That was Alcopop!. Putting the QI podcast, No Such Thing As A Fish, out as the first UK podcast on vinyl with a secret track by Slipknot’s Corey Taylor, that was Alcopop!. The label has also released albums in a host of innovative release formats like on scarves, frisbees and even bicycles as well as some pretty genius political stunts as well.
Jack is a real gent, he was a pleasure to speak to and has so many amazing stories. I hope you enjoy this chat as much as I had having it.
Alcopop! Records has some brilliant bands signed to it. Check them out at ilovealcopop.co.uk and give their bands a listen, buy some merch and reach out to them to let them know I sent you, they’re on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram as well as Soundcloud , Bandcamp and YouTube.
Thanks for listening, stay safe and take care.

30 Apr 2021 | Kings of the Wild Frontier - The Adventures of Adam and the Ants | 01:40:53
Adam and the Ants was formed in 1977, after Adam Ant witnessed the birth of punk at the Sex Pistols' first ever gig. Beginning as a punk band that sang about fetishism and Nazis while wearing leather and S&M gear, Adam and the Ants found it difficult to achieve credibility both in punk circles or in the mainstream.
To rectify this, Ant went to Malcolm McLaren for advice and it was during this time that the band perfected its unique 'Burundi beat' style with a two drummer line-up and began writing enduring songs such as Antmusic, Kings of the Wild Frontier, Prince Charming and Stand and Deliver. Although, not before McLaren had stolen his entire band and left Ant to pick up the pieces.
Along with the new line up and sound, Adam and the Ants also adopted a new look that spawned the New Romantic movement, despite not acknowledging being a part of the movement itself.
Despite having number one singles and albums, Ant disbanded Adam and the Ants at the peak of the their fame and embarked on a solo career. But, that's a story for another time.
For now, enjoy the ups and downs and multiple line up changes of Adam and the Ants, and be sure to subscribe to get part two soon which focusses on Adam Ant's solo career.

23 Aug 2021 | Jack Pop Review | 00:09:08
Hello and welcome back to Banned Biographies. Your host, Tom Austin-Morgan, is back to let you know what’s been happening over the last month since the interview with Jack Pop, founder of Alcopop! Records, went out and what you can expect from the next episode.
I got to play some gigs this past weekend with my covers band and Swampstomper . It was exhilarating to play live and loud in front of people again, and there are a couple more gigs this month too: one at Leo’s Red Lion in Gravesend on the 4th September and another supporting Janus Stark at the Hope and Anchor in Islington, London on the 25th September.
The third episode of my four-part guest spot on the Permanent Record Podcast has just been released, where I joined hosts Brian and Sarah to talk about the iconic U2 album, The Joshua Tree. In this one we discuss a bunch of the tracks in the middle of the album as well as a couple of videos for songs that none of us knew even existed. Permanent Record podcast is a great resource for anyone remotely interested in the minutiae of bands and albums, especially if you’re into synth-based music.
Make sure you go and subscribe to Permanent Record Podcast on whatever podcast platform you use and go and follow them on Twitter , Facebook or at https://www.permanentrecordpodcast.com/.
The interview with Jack Pop was hotly anticipated by a few people and I received some great feedback from listeners. The chat was a joy. It had been recorded a few months ago, so revisiting it for the edit was great fun. Jack’s such a lovely guy, his ability to weave a story is brilliant and his enthusiasm for music is infectious. I’ve found some really great bands on Alcopop!, most of which we mentioned in the episode itself, and I’m certainly a fan of the label now too.
It’s been great to hear that you found the interview interesting and engaging. Jack himself has been responsive to all the comments the episode has received all over social media and has had some really nice things to say about me and the show as well. Thank you to all of you that got in touch.
Please do reach out to Banned Biographies on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or by email as well as leaving those ratings and reviews on Apple Podcasts, but more than anything else take care and stay safe.

15 Apr 2022 | Interview with The Sewer Cats | 00:59:46
On this special interview episode of the Banned Biographies podcast, Tom talks to The Sewer Cats - a two-piece punk band made up of drummer and singer Cass and guitarist Josh.
Ferocious, fuzzy and feline-inclined, The Sewer Cats are an explosive Manchester-based punk duo who deliver riotous tunes of patriarchy-smashing fury. Their short and snappy songs have been described as ‘catchy and scathing’, bursting with hooky riffs drenched in fuzz and aggressive riot-grrrl vocals, all served up with a big helping of sass.
Their new album, Cute Aggression is out TODAY on Manchester-based DIY non-profit punk label, TNSrecords. Go and find it and The Sewer Cats’ back catalogue wherever you stream or listen to your music as well as on the TNSrecords website.

A big thank you to Cass and Josh for their time and for being so easy to get on with. I very much look forward to meeting them in a couple of months time on their tour. Do try and find out where they're playing near you and make the effort to see them, and support them by buying some merch.

29 Oct 2020 | London Calling - The History of The Clash | 04:05:24
The Clash are so much more than simply a punk band, they infused elements of reggae, dub and later R&B and rap which marked them out as unique in a sea of Sex Pistols soundalikes that were springing up in Britain in the late 1970s. They were also the most genuinely political bands of the original wave of UK punk.
While the Sex Pistols’ debut gig at Manchester’s Lesser Free Trade Hall has been acknowledged as the starting point of that city’s punk and new wave scene, The Clash’s first gig at Eric’s, supported by The Specials on the 5th May 1977, was a similar watershed moment for Liverpool. The gig was witnessed by people who would later form Big In Japan, The Teardrop Explodes, Wah!, Dead or Alive, The KLF, Frankie Goes To Hollywood fame and Echo & The Bunnymen.
The Clash's influence can still be heard in American political punk bands such as Rancid, Anti-Flag, Bad Religion, NOFX, Green Day, and Rise Against! as well as in the political hard rock of early Manic Street Preachers.
Outside of rock music, Chuck D has credited the Clash as an inspiration for Public Enemy, in particular for the way their use of socially and politically conscious lyrics gained attention from the music press.
Join me on the deepest of dives Banned Biographies has taken so far into the lives and careers of the members of probably THE greatest UK punk band ever.

24 Apr 2020 | The Sex Pistols Story | 01:33:52
The 1970s was a turbulent time in the UK what with a national energy crisis, a financial crash, strikes leading to the three-day-week, runaway inflation and record unemployment figures. Was it any wonder then that people felt disenfranchised, frustrated and nihilistic?
Out of this bubbling tension exploded a band that epitomised the national feeling. The Sex Pistols single-handedly invented the punk genre both in terms of sound and aesthetics, and in just a few short years - and amazingly, only one album - shook the foundations of the establishment and inspired countless young people who felt like they didn’t belong to form bands and make their voices heard.
This first full-length episode of Banned Biographies takes an in-depth look at the ups and downs of punk's most iconic band as well as some of the other notable and notorious figures caught in their wake.

27 Jan 2022 | Stiff Little Fingers And 2021 In Review | 00:16:39
On this episode of the Banned Biographies podcast, Tom gives a recap of the reactions to last month's Stiff Little Fingers documentary, the first documentary episode in about six months!
A change to the normal running of things is proposed so that Tom keeps in touch with new music after a year of brilliant album, EP and single releases, most of which passed him by. So, Tom looks back at some of them - as many as he's gone back to listen to, anyway - from the baffling resurrection of Nu Metal to the great punk, indie, ska and rock music that came out in the last 12 months.
Please do get in touch via the social links below to let us know what your favourite albums and track were in 2021 and what you're looking forward to in 2022. Also, if you are in a band or make music, we'd love to showcase you on these episodes and don't worry, as you'll hear from Tom's list, this is a judgement free zone!
Please do reach out to Banned Biographies on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or by email as well as leaving those ratings and reviews on Apple Podcasts, but more than anything else take care and stay safe.

01 Jan 2022 | Suspect Device - The Incendiary Stiff Little Fingers | 02:17:55
Founded in Belfast in 1977 out of the ashes of a heavy metal covers band, Stiff Little Fingers and their manager, Gordon Ogilvie, wrote hard-hitting, scathing songs about The Troubles in Northern Ireland. This was in stark contrast to their contemporaries like The Undertones who chose to ignore The Troubles to sing about teenage angst and chocolate bars.
Stiff Little Fingers was championed by the legendary John Peel and released the iconic Inflammable Material album, which became the first independently released album to chart in the UK, reaching number 14 and achieving silver-selling status.
The band changed its style over the next two albums which lost them a lot of fans and, due to the popularity of synthesiser-based pop music over guitar-driven bands in the 1980s, Stiff Little Fingers broke up in 1983.
A cynical, money-spinning reunion tour in 1987 saw the band enjoy better attended shows than ever and so they decided to give it another go. To this day Stiff Little Fingers continues to tour the world as well as recording and releasing albums - the latest of which became the band's first number one on the BBC Rock Albums Chart.
Join me as I tell the (somewhat expletive filled) story of a 45-year-old band that is arguably more popular now than ever!

26 Mar 2021 | Interview with The Stepney Sisters | 01:32:01
On this episode of Banned Biographies, I sat down over Zoom to interview Caroline and Benni from The Stepney Sisters. Theirs is a brilliant story of university friends who joined a soul band as singers in the early 1970s, moved into squats London, met some like-minded women involved in the women’s liberation movement and decided to start an all-female band so they could have complete control over the content of their songs and which gigs they played.
The Steppos, as I found out they called themselves, broke up less than two years later as their lives were taking them in different directions. They all carried on playing in various bands over the years and in 2010 they got back together to play a couple of gigs. In 2020 the band signed to indie label, Alcopop!, and released a double single in early 2021. Since the interview they’ve released a full album called Stepney Sisters on 12th March 2021.
It was an honour to sit down with Caroline and Benni and I hope you enjoy listening to our conversation just as much as I enjoyed talking to them.

21 Jun 2021 | Louise Aubrie and Rick McMurray review | 00:07:44
There have been some really wonderful bits of feedback from the interview episodes with Louise Aubrie and Rick McMurray with people checking out Louise’s music which I’m really happy about.
The second single off Louise’s album 'Antonio' is out on Wednesday 23rd June (two days from this episode going live). Called 'Ours', it's a slightly darker song in tone from 'Last', but is another masterfully arranged song with killer vocal hooks. Make sure you go and give it a listen and let Louise know what you think of it.
The Ash livestream was really good fun, there were a lot of the fans tweeting along with the action, but I still have an issue with livestream gigs. There’s just not the atmosphere in your living room that there is at a live gig in a room full of people.
I’ve appeared on the first of a planned four-part podcast from the Permanent Record Podcast, hosted by Brian and Sarah.
Usually they look at albums by synth-based bands, but because I deal with predominantly guitar-based punk, new wave and post punk bands (for the time being at least) we decided we should look at one of the most iconic albums by an iconic rock band that none of us have any deep knowledge of; The Joshua Tree by U2.
Go an subscribe to Permanent Record Podcast on whatever podcast platform you use and go and follow them on Twitter @PermRecordPod or find them on Facebook or at their own website www.permanentrecordpodcast.com.
While you're waiting for the next episode to drop on Friday 25th June 2021, why not go and leave a rating and review on iTunes, they really do help and you'll get a special shout out on these review episodes.
I hope you enjoy the next episode and that you're taking good care of yourself and others as well as staying safe.

26 Nov 2020 | The Clash Review/The Undertones Preview | 00:09:10
Welcome back to Banned Biographies, I'm back to cover some of the reaction to London Calling: The History of The Clash episode, give some shout outs, announce the winners of the Joe Strummer badge giveaway with Pin Icons and to let you know that the next episode will be about Northern Ireland's originators of pop punk, The Undertones!
I seem to have lost a week somewhere this month, hence this episode coming out on Thursday rather than Monday. I have a fair amount of editing to do on The Undertones episode, but not a staggering amount, so I'm hoping that I may even get it out on time on the 27th November, but if not I'm confident it won't be more than a week late.
In the meantime, why not go and leave a rating and review on iTunes, call it an early Christmas present from you to me! Enjoy.

Welcome back to Banned Biographies, I'm back to cover some of the reaction to the Love Bites: The Story of Buzzcocks episode, give some shout-outs and to let you know that the next episode will be about my favourite of all the original UK punk bands, The Clash!
It should be out on Friday, 25th September 2020. But, i's easily going to be the longest episode to date and I'm not far into the editing. It could happen, but as ever, make sure you check the social media channels and that you're subscribed to the podcast on the podcast platform of your choice so you get the episode as soon as it drops. One month on from the release of the first episode of the Banned Biographies podcast that covers the early days of Adam Ant's career in Adam and the Ants, I'm back to cover some of the reaction to the episode and to let you know what the next episode will be about.
Additionally, I give you a run down of some of the great music that's been released in the last month including singles from Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes featuring Joe Talbot from IDLES, Dropkick Murphys, Pendulum, Frank Turner, and Royal Blood.
While you're waiting for the next episode to drop on Friday 28th May 2021, why not go and leave a rating and review on iTunes, they really do help and you'll get a special shout out on these review episodes. You'll also get a shout out if you comment on or share the main episode each month, who doesn't want to hear their name read out on their favourite podcast?!

01 Feb 2022 | Interview with Leo Ulph (Wake Up Leo, Presenter and Producer at BBC Radio) | 01:21:18
On this special interview episode of the Banned Biographies podcast, Tom chats with Leo Ulph who fronts the band Wake Up Leo. However, he's probably better known as the presenter of BBC Radio Kent's Upload show, where he has featured clips for the documentary episodes of this very podcast along with a host of other podcasts, poets, bands and artists over the last couple of years. Leo also produces broadcasting legend Gabby Roslin's show on BBC Radio London.
This conversation covers all sorts of musical experiences as both a fan, a broadcaster and a player, including the question 'why is Ed Sheeran so popular?', how meeting your heroes can be a good thing, how he got into the radio business and the power of saying 'yes' (and then working really hard!).
During the course of the interview we also manage to draw a line from his early days of playing music and telling jokes between his early songs, for fear they weren't good enough, to the style in which he presents his radio show.
You can find him on Facebook, Twitter (@WakeUpLeo) and Instagram (@wakeupleo_1). Wake Up Leo's website is www.wakeupleo.com and you can also find them on Facebook, Soundcloud, ReverbNation, Spotify, and Apple Music.
I think you'll agree that Leo's a great guy and really engaging, and I'd like to thank him very much for his time, especially as he was getting over a Covid infection at the time, what a trooper... and just think, if he's this chipper when he's feeling under the weather, imagine how much more energy he has when he's 100%!
Thanks for listening, stay safe and take care.

27 Aug 2021 | Interview With James Cruttwell (The Gonads, Furry Love Lickers and ex-East End Badoes) | 01:36:40
On this episode of Banned Biographies, Tom chats with James Cruttwell, bassist with The Gonads - a band fronted by broadcaster and author Garry Bushell - and The Furry Love Lickers.
In the episode we also talk about him being in East End Badoes, another old school London-based Oi Punk band, but since this episode was recorded he no longer plays for them.
We also talk quite a bit about lockdowns possibly being eased, which was something we were looking forward to in March or April when this episode was recorded. So, a lot of that is irrelevant now, but I kept it in because I found it interesting to look back at how we were feeling four or five months ago and how things have changed since.
Because we found out that we have similar tastes in music we get very excited talking about bands we both love and because we're both from the same area we both get a bit 'Estuary'; dropping our 'Ts' and turning double 'Ls' into 'Ws', which is what happens when you get two Kent-based punk fans together!
James is a great guy who has had some brilliant experiences playing in punk bands around Europe. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I had having it.
Thanks for listening, stay safe and take care.

26 Jul 2021 | Adam Ant Review | 00:08:47
Welcome back to Banned Biographies. Tom Austin-Morgan, your host, is back to let you know what’s been happening over the last month since the second part of the Adam Ant documentary went out which focussed on his solo career and what you can expect from the next episode.
There’s been some great feedback as well as sharing from the Ant fans this month including a new review on Apple Podcasts. Already the Adam Ant solo episode vaulted into the top 10 of all episodes so far, and the first part - the Adam and the Ants episode - is the fourth most downloaded episode, behind only the Sex Pistols, Siouxsie and the Banshees and The Clash which were released in April, July and October 2020! Incredible. Thank you.
Outside of Banned Biographies, the first two episodes of the Permanent Record podcast have been released so far, where I joined hosts by Brian and Sarah to talk about the iconic U2 album, The Joshua Tree. So far, 4 hours and 11 minutes have been spent discussing the polarising nature of U2, why we think that is and our own personal history with the band, or lack thereof. We’ve only got four tracks into discussing the album itself, so there’s still loads to go. Permanent Record podcast is a great resource for anyone remotely interested in the minutiae of bands and albums, especially if you’re into synth-based music. They made a bit of an exception for me by reviewing a guitar band, which I thank them for.
Brian and Sarah have made me feel really welcome, if not slightly under-researched! They put as much into looking at one album as I do in talking about the entire careers of bands. But what’s been brilliant is that we’re all learning. And I hope we manage to impart some information to you guys that you didn’t know about the band and the album that you didn’t know before. Make sure you go and subscribe to Permanent Record Podcast on whatever podcast platform you use and go and follow them on Twitter @PermRecordPod or find them on Facebook or at www.permanentrecordpodcast.com.
Please do reach out to Banned Biographies on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or by email as well as leaving those ratings and reviews on Apple Podcasts, but more than anything else take care and stay safe.

01 Apr 2022 | Interview with Them Fanatsies | 01:13:57
On this interview episode of the Banned Biographies podcast Tom Austin-Morgan talks to L.A.-based indie rock band Them Fantasies.
The band is made up of bassist and singer Dominic Cannarella, guitarist Eric McCoy and drummer Max Meizlish. They met while at music college in Boston, Massachusetts and cut their teeth playing live and finding their sound in Valencia, Spain as part of their course. During 2020 they relocated to LA and while living together have honed their sound and their production skills to infuse a modern pop slickness to their funk tinged, indie rock sound.
During the pandemic they've found an excited new audience on Tik Tok, released three singles in 2021, and recently put out their new EP “How Modest”, which sees them tackle more socially conscious themes like toxic masculinity and the crassness of materialism.

26 Apr 2021 | Stepney Sisters Interview Review and Anniversary Special | 00:17:50
I'm back to let you know what's been happening here at Banned Biographies in the last month and to introduce the subject of the next documentary episode. Yes, I'm returning to the documentary format for the next episode!
As well as reaction the the Stepney Sisters interview, it also happens to be the podcast's first birthday and I've had a lot of messages from listeners to congratulate and celebrate with me. Had I realised before the last couple of weeks that this next episode was going to be the one released on the anniversary of the podcast first being published I'd have made more noise about it last month. So, if you want to reach out then please do, I always appreciate a message.
I hope you all are taking care and staying safe, and more than anything that you enjoy the next episode of Banned Biographies that will be released on Friday 30th April.

26 Feb 2021 | Interview With Paul Brightman of Sham 69, Swampstomper and (Almost) Chelsea | 01:21:16
This is the second Banned Biographies Interview episode with Paul Brightman of Sham 69, Swampstomer and (almost) Chelsea. During the episode, Paul talks about his introductions to music and playing in bands, juvenile delinquency, politics – both in bands as well as in the wider world – the pros and cons of touring and his hopes for the future both with his own project, Swampstomper, and with Sham 69.
A quick warning, the first few minutes are spent discussing the affect that COVID-19 has had on him including his own brush with the virus and, very sadly, losing close members of his family. We don’t dwell on this issue very long, but if you don’t want to listen to that part of the conversation then skip ahead about 5 minutes.
You can find Sham 69 at www.officialsham69.com, officialsham69 on Twitter and Instagram, and at SHAM 69 – Tim V on Facebook. You can find Swampstomper on Facebook by searching for Swampstomper or typing in facebook.com/SwampStomping as well as on reverbnation.com/swampstomper.
There were some technical issues with this interview. Paul’s microphone settings were wrong before we started recording and then, once sorted , I couldn’t hear him through my desk for a reason I couldn’t figure out, so we ended up both using onboard microphones, which is never ideal, but I’ve managed to get it sounding fine. Then, about 20 minutes in he lost internet connection and his computer automatically updated!
I’m more than happy with the final interview, and I thank Paul for sticking with it. I hope you enjoy listening to our conversation just as much as I enjoyed talking to him.

25 May 2022 | Chris Constantinou Interview Roundup, Punk Rock News and Fontaines D.C. Skinty Fia Album Review | 00:15:27
Your host, Tom Austin-Morgan, is back to let you know what’s been going on since the Chris Constantinou Interview episode went out and what you can expect from the next one.
Firstly, a big thanks to Chris for the time he took to talk to me last month, it’s been wonderful to make his acquaintance and to get to know him. Special thanks must again go out to Rhiannon Ifans who arranged the meeting in the first place, I’m looking forward to what else she’s go up her sleeve!
This month I appeared on another music-based podcast: Love That Album, which I’m a big fan of. Myself and the host, Maurice discussed the Tom Robinson Band’s debut album Power In The Darkness as well as a lot of the political, societal and musical landscapes of the UK in the 1970s. I had an absolute blast finally meeting Maurice and getting onto his podcast, I hope you either heard it and enjoyed it or will seek it out to listen to, I think that episode makes a great companion piece to this podcast and, if you make the effort to listen to it and you do enjoy it, I hope you subscribe to Love That Album, Maurice is a great host and a fountain of knowledge. His most recent episode came out this week and is an interview with the bassist from the band The Knack, which was a real eye-opener about a band a lot of people dismiss as a one hit wonder. Make sure you listen to that one too!
The news this month features bands like Buzzcocks, Black Flag, John Doe, The Linda Lindas, My Chemical Romance, Adolescents, Dream Nails and The Beastie Boys as well as the nominations announced by the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame.
I also review Dublin-born, now London-based post-punk band Fontaines D.C.'s third album Skinty Fia.
Be sure to get in touch on social media or email and do go to Apple Music to leave a rating and review, it really does help and you get the review read out on the show! Until next time, take care and stay safe.

29 May 2020 | The Tale of The Damned (Damned Damned) | 01:21:27
While the Sex Pistols are claimed with spearheading the punk movement in the UK, with Johnny Rotten and Sid Vicious as its poster boys, and later The Clash took punk rock in a more diverse musical direction, there was one band quietly racking up a string of ‘firsts’: First UK punk rock band to release a single; first UK punk rock band to release a full-length album; first UK punk rock band to tour America; and the first UK punk rock band to split up and then reunite - MANY times.
This band is also still performing live and releasing new material to this day, more than 40 years later. In this episode, Banned Biographies takes a look at the career of one of the hardest working of the original punk bands - The Damned - and its many, many members.

31 Aug 2020 | Love Bites - The Story of Buzzcocks | 02:16:02
One day in 1975 Howard Trafford placed a notice on the Bolton Institute of Technology's noticeboard saying he was looking for musicians that shared a liking for The Velvet Underground song "Sister Ray". Peter McNeish, a fellow student at the Institute, responded to the notice.
The pair travelled to London to see the Sex Pistols play and were so impressed and excited by what they'd seen they invited the Pistols to play in Manchester at the Lesser Free Trade Hall, a gig that has gone down in history as the birth of punk, new wave and independent music that remains a large part of Manchester's musical identity to this day.
McNeish became Pete Shelley and Trafford became Howard Devoto, the pair formed the Buzzcocks and produced the UK's first independently recorded and distributed records, the Spiral Scratch E.P. Devoto then quit to form Magazine leaving Shelley to continue on his own bringing his idiosyncratic views on love to the punk song, fusing pop and punk in a genre that continues to thrive to this day.
The story of Buzzcocks is one of sudden ups and downs, join me on this rollercoaster ride that doesn't look like it's going to stop any time soon!

22 Feb 2022 | Leo Ulph Interview Review, Punk Rock News and Tom’s Birthday | 00:24:03
On this episode of the Banned Biographies podcast your host, Tom Austin-Morgan, and talks about what’s been going on in the last month and what you can expect from the next episode.
Firstly I’d like to thank Leo Ulph once more for the time he took to talk to me on last month’s interview episode, he’s such a nice bloke who I think is so engaging to listen to.
There has been a slew of reviews on Apple Music this month, all from the UK and all with five stars, so I give them a shout out, it was a really nice surprise to get so many in such a short space of time, and I noticed that the show charted higher in the Apple Music rankings, so there definitely is a correlation between the number of reviews and how visible the show is in the search, so keep it up, guys, it really does help.
As promised, I debut a news section from the world of punk from February including stories about The Dwarves, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominations, Angels And Airwaves, The Undertones, IDLES, The Last Gang, Jesse Michaels and Tim Armstrong performing a live version of Operation Ivy's "Sound System", Cancer Bats, Killing Joke, Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong's car being stolen then found, New Found Glory, Beavis And Butt-Head, Dropkick Murphys, The Real McKenzies, Cro-Mags, Fontaines D.C., Frank Turner scoring his first number one album with FTHC and a review of the album, and Adam Ant.
I also talk about my birthday on the 20th February where I celebrated by playing two shows within 24 hours with my very first punk band, High Frequency our first in about 11 years. The reception we had from both audiences we played to over the weekend we really warm and engaged, people genuinely seemed to enjoy the songs we were playing, some of which are 19 years old now! So maybe covers aren’t the way forward after all? I’d like to thank Ant and Corky as well as our wives and partners for putting up with the disruption to their weekends and especially to the people who put us on the line ups for these two shows and finally to all the people who listened and even bough CDs which have been gathering dust in my loft for the last decade! If you want to find us, we’re on Facebook and Instagram @high_frequency_rocks or you can listen to that album by searching Welcome To Apathyville on Spotify.
Until next time, take careand stay safe.

26 Nov 2021 | Gizz Butt Review and Tales From Tour | 00:35:27
On this episode of the Banned Biographies Podcast, Tom has a brief recap of the reactions to the interview with Gizz Butt from last month's episode and lets you know which band the next documentary will be able when he finally releases it in December.
There's no main episode this month, mainly due to the fact that I've been playing gigs around the country this month with Sham 69 as well as onboarding new clients over the last couple of months which has made me busier than ever. Instead I tell a few stories from travelling round the country and let you know of the gigs the band has lined up for 2022 and what I'm trying to sort out for the podcast as well.
It's an exciting time right now and I hope you guys are as excited for what lies ahead as I am. Make sure to keep an eye on social media and your podcast feed for announcements of what's coming up next as and when I post them.
Thanks once more to Gizz Butt for his time and his guitar playing on the last episode and also. be sure to check out my appearance on the Free With This Months Issue Podcast where hosts Colin, Ian and I dissect a free CD from the cover of a Kerrang! Magazine from back in 2003!
Please do reach out to Banned Biographies on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or by email as well as leaving those ratings and reviews on Apple Podcasts, but more than anything else take care and stay safe.

21 Dec 2020 | The Undertones Review | 00:10:36
Welcome back to Banned Biographies, I'm back to cover some of the reaction to the Teenage Kicks: The Story of The Undertones episode, give some shout-outs and to let you know that the next episode will be a very different affair.
Instead of a documentary episode I've conducted my first interview for the show. You may remember during the Love Bites: The Story of Buzzcocks episode that I mentioned the Pete Shelley Memorial Campaign. They recently unveiled a blue plaque at Pete Shelley's childhood home in the first of many initiatives to memorialise him.
It will be out on Friday, 25th December 2020 as a present to all of you who have listened over the last eight months, or even if you've just started listening, but it's especially for those who may be spending the season alone because of lockdowns or protecting their family members. 2020 has been a bit crap, here's to a better 2021.
As a present to me, why not tell your friends to subscribe and listen. Also, don't forget to leave a rating and review, it only takes a few seconds and really makes a difference. But most of all; enjoy!

01 Jun 2022 | Interview with Aaron Pendergast (Filmmaker - The Blasting Room Documentary) | 01:06:49
On this special interview episode of the Banned Biographies Podcast I talk to film and documentary maker Aaron Pendergast whose latest project is a documentary about The Blasting Room, the legendary recording studio started by members of the Descendents and ALL in the mid 90s, which is currently in post-production.
If you’re a fan of US punk bands from the 80s through to today you’ll likely be a fan of at least one, if not many bands who have recorded albums at The Blasting Room, and you’ll likely own albums that were recorded, mixed or mastered there. Essentially, The Blasting Room documentary will be to punk rock what the Sound City documentary was to the Foo Fighters.
Aaron was great to talk to and imparted some brilliant advice for anyone looking to make independent films and documentaries as well as being very generous with his time.
Unfortunately, there was a technical issue with distortion on Aaron’s side of the Zoom call that I just couldn’t edit around. We noticed it early on and Aaron sent me files that he recorded on his end as well, but the issue was still there in his files. I’ve done what I can lessen the effect and edit out as much of it as possible, but it’s still obviously there. I hope you are able to listen around it.
I hope to have Aaron on again in future to talk about the reception of the film after it’s released towards the end of the year in September or October.
You can find out more about the film at blastingroomfilm.com or on Instagram @blastingroomfilm.
Technical issues aside, I really hope you enjoy the conversation and am sure you’ll get something out of it, especially if you’re into US punk rock bands or independent filmmaking.

25 Oct 2021 | Permanent Record Podcast and Skamouth Review | 00:12:53
Your host, Tom Austin-Morgan returns to talk about what’s been going on since the mammoth Permanent Record Podcast and Banned Biographies crossover podcast was released last month where they reviewed and dissected U2's iconic 1987 album The Joshua Tree and what you can expect from this months’ episode. I’ll also be talking about my experience at Skamouth Festival, which was my first gig in Sham 69.
Firstly, I’d like to thank Brian and Sarah again for allowing me to stich four of their episodes together and put it out on my feed. I wasn’t expecting big download numbers, because the episode was 8 hours long, and because they’d already been published individually by Permanent Record Podcast. However, it’s quickly become one of the most downloaded Banned Biographies episodes that isn’t a documentary, so I’d like to thank you all for downloading it and – hopefully – listening all the way through. If you enjoyed what you heard you really should subscribe to the Permanent Record Podcast and let Brian and Sarah know you found out about them through Banned Biographies.
I played my first gig with Sham 69 on Sunday 2nd October and I cover the whole weekend in some detail on this episode. Luckily, I survived being chucked in the deep end and will be playing with Sham 69 at four more gigs across the country in November:
Saturday 6th November, The Snig, Widnes (tickets from seetickets)
Saturday 13th November, New Cross Inn, London (tickets from New Cross Inn)
Thursday 18th November, The Old Courts, Wigan (tickets from eventbrite)
Friday 19th November, The Bunkhouse, Swansea (tickets from The Bunkhouse)
I'd love to see some of you listeners at these gigs, do come up and say hello if you come along.
Please do reach out to Banned Biographies on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or by email as well as leaving those ratings and reviews on Apple Podcasts, but more than anything else take care and stay safe.

01 May 2022 | Interview with Chris Constantinou (Rude GRL + CC, One Thousand Motels, The Dandy Warhols, ex-Adam Ant, JackieOnAssid, The Wolfmen) | 01:49:41
On this special interview episode of the Banned Biographies podcast Tom Austin-Morgan talks to Chris Constantinou, who is probably better known to Adam Ant fan as Chris DeNiro - the bassist in Adam's post-Ants solo band.
Chris has also played in The Wolfmen with Marco Pirroni, JackieOnAssid, and One Thousand Motels with Rat Scabies of The Damned which cover everything from blues to dance music. In between these he's also played on songs and albums with Annabella Lwin from Bow Wow Wow, Guy Chambers before he started his partnership with Robbie Williams, The Slits, Sinéad O'Connor, Daler Mehndi, Holy Holy, Brant Bjork & Sean Wheeler, Andreas Grega, Nerina Pallot and Earl Slick and Bernard Fowler. He also sometimes plays flute live with The Dandy Warhols.
Currently, he is about the release a new mini-album called Femme Power with rapper, Jenna Dickens in a punk rap project called Rude GRL + CC. Femme Power will be available to stream and buy on the 6th of May 2022 and is released through Ingrooves (part of the Universal Music Group). In June, they’ll also be releasing a double A-side through Cleopatra Records, the tracks are I’m Good (mixed by Nick Hodgson of the Kaiser Chiefs) and the second track is a version of Adam Ant’s Goody Two Shoes. So, keep your eyes peeled for those dropping.
On top of all this he also has stories of playing on Top of the Pops, Live Aid, convincing Guy Chambers not to give up on a career in music, and recording in the Palm Desert scene with members of various bands including Masters of Reality, Queens of the Stone Age, etc and all the madness involved in that, supporting King Crimson and Hawkwind as a 13-year-old and so much more
As you can see, Chris has lived a hell of a life and I feel like I only just scraped the surface. Hopefully, there'll be a follow up episode in the future. If you get a fraction of joy listening to our conversation as I did having it I'm sure you'll be supremely satisfied.
I'd like to thank Chris for being so generous with his time as well as for being so candid and warm. An extra special thank you must also go to my friend Rhiannon Ifans for setting this up.
Let me know what you thought of it by commenting on the social media post, and be sure to share it - and the podcast as a whole - with your friends.

26 Jun 2020 | Rebel Yell - The History of Generation X and Billy Idol | 02:05:31
In late 1976, William Broad, a 21 year old university drop-out, and his friend John Towe, a shop assistant and drummer, replied to an advert to form a new band. In this band (Chelsea) they began working with Tony James and Gene October. However, James and Broad - now known as Billy Idol - soon outgrew Chelsea and formed their own band, Generation X.
Just days later, the pair, along with Towe and young guitarist Bob (Derwood) Andrews, took to the stage as headliners at The Roxy club, Covent Garden. It wasn't all plain sailing though, and four years later Idol struck out on his own to seek fame and fortune in the US.
Forty years on, Billy Idol remains a giant star in the rock firmament... and the other members of Generation X didn't do too badly over the years either, as you'll find out in this episode.

24 Jun 2021 | Bravest of the Brave - The Continued Adventures of Adam Ant | 01:39:26
After disbanding Adam and the Ants at the height of the band's success, Adam Ant went solo. Working with Marco Pirroni, his first solo single, Goody Two Shoes went straight to number one in the UK and Australia which allowed him to pursue a career in acting both on stage and screen.
As with the first part of his career with The Ants, Adam's solo career has had many ups and downs over the years - both in terms of critical and chart success as well as with his own personal battles with his mental health.
But, each time he bounces back stronger than before and more confident. In the last couple of decades he seems to more balanced than he ever has. This appears to have been helped by setting up his own record label which has allowed him to work at his own pace and take time off when he needs it. He has also become an advocate for people admitting they need help with their mental health and finding the correct help for it.
His has been a rollercoaster of a life so far and he is far from stopping with festival appearances lined up for the summer of 2021 and scheduling a tour for the beginning of 2022. Long live Adam Ant!

01 Jun 2021 | Interview with Rick McMurray of Ash | 01:33:52
On this extra-special episode of Banned Biographies I was very lucky to chat over Zoom with Rick McMurray, the drummer from Ash.
Ash's first full-length album, 1977, was release 25 years ago and went straight to number one on the UK album chart. To commemorate that, Ash is playing the album in its entirety on the 5th June 2021 which you can sign up to watch through the band’s website https://ash-official.com/. There are various bundles available, from the concert only right up to getting unlimited 30-day access to the show, a behind the scenes documentary, a bonus performance, a limited 1977 frisbee and a limited edition 1977 t-shirt. All tiers are well worth the money.
During our chat, Rick was candid about the highs and lows of Ash’s career as well as talking about the band's unfinished indie horror film, Slashed, having a meal with Joe Strummer and why they didn't join him on stage to play I Fought The Law, getting Mickey Bradley and Damien O’Neil from The Undertones on the last Ash album and so much more.
I’m so honoured and thankful to Rick for giving up part of his morning to talk to me and I hope you get some great insights into the man himself, the life of a professional musician and how that job has changed over the last three decades.
He's a totally down to earth guy and I really hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did talking to him.

29 Jan 2021 | Typical Girls(?) - The Tale of The Slits | 01:17:57
The Slits are one of the most significant female punk bands of the late 1970s. Not only did they bravely (or foolishly) leap into the fray with little, if any, musical ability, but through sheer emotion and desire created some great music, setting the stage for a future generation of Riot Grrrls.
Their success seems on a par with a band like The Velvet Underground’s in the 1960s. Neither bands sold huge amounts of records at the time but their influence has been huge and ongoing.
Though much derided in their short existence, what the Slits achieved and what they meant to succeeding generations of young female rockers and pop stars cannot be underestimated.
Join me on an episode that charts the highs and lows of the lives and careers of some of punks least typical girls.

01 Aug 2022 | Interview with Brad Hallen (Nervous Eaters) | 01:02:33
On this special interview episode of the Banned Biographies podcast, Tom Austin-Morgan talks to the bassist of the Boston-based garage punk band Nervous Eaters, Brad Hallen.
This episode largely deals with the new single, Wild Eyes, and upcoming album, Monsters & Angels, as well as about Brad’s life an career to this point, and boy has he had a career! He's played with so many bands and artists including Ministry, Iggy Pop, Elliot Easton (The Cars), Jane Wiedlin (The Go-Go's), Aimee Mann, Susan Tadeschi , Monster Mike Welch, Duke Robillard, Roomful of Blues and so many others.
Formed in the mid-70's, the Nervous Eaters would eventually become the house band for the legendary Boston punk rock club The Rat, where they established themselves as a leading punk rock band in the Northeast, playing with a who's who of punk and new wave luminaries, including The Police, The Ramones, The Cars, Patti Smith, Dead Boys, Iggy Pop, The Stranglers, Go-Go's and many others.
The band’s original drummer, the late Jeff Wilkinson, let the band rehearse in his family’s basement. “His mother, Florence, fed the band at these rehearsals. Band leader, Steve Cataldo explained: “We’d come up from the basement at different times to grab something to eat and she said, ‘Why don’t you all come up and sit down and have a meal? You’re such a bunch of nervous eaters.’ So, it stuck. It wasn’t the coolest name to hit the town, but it seemed like a good idea at the time. We had a good laugh over it and we loved Florence. We are the Nervous Eaters.”
The band launched in the mid 1970’s and were a leading punk rock band in the Northeast. Home base: The black-walled, sticky-floored, basement club in Boston’s Kenmore Square - The Rat. The Eaters played snarling, self-deprecating lust-for-life blasts like Shit for Brains, Get Stuffed, Last Chance, Just Head, and I’m a Degenerate. Their first release a 45, on Rat Records, 1976, which gained local and national college airplay for their classic single - Loretta.
The buzz built and their popularity grew. The Cars’ Ric Ocasek produced a demo tape which got the band signed to Elektra Records. They toured around the world - but the album stalled, going astray from the start with the wrong assigned label producer and a lack of follow-through.
The original Eaters dissolved but came back in the mid- ‘80s with a new line-up. The reborn Eaters launched a salvo called HOT STEEL AND ACID in 1986, a far better disc (that sounded like the band), on the indie label Ace of Hearts. Producer Rick Harte captured the Eaters vicious, vintage punk sound and it went as far as a Boston indie could take it.
The band has been revived a few times over the years with various line-ups. The current version of the Nervous Eaters formed in 2018 and includes three other Boston rock veterans, bassist Brad Hallen (who you’re about to learn all about), drummer David McLean (of Willie Alexander’s Boom Boom Band) and guitarist/vocalist Adam Sherman (of Private Lightning), and between them, they have recorded and/or toured with such artists as Ministry, Iggy Pop, Aimee Mann, Jane Wiedlin, Susan Tedeschi, Jimmie Vaughan, Lenny Kaye and many others.
You can find Nervous Eaters at their website: nervouseaters.net, on Facebook and Instagram and you can find Brad Hallen at his website bradhallen.com
This interview was made possible thanks to Peter Ferioli at Pantheon Podcasts and Mike Cubillos at Earshot Media and I’m incredibly grateful to them.

24 Jun 2022 | Aaron Pendergast Interview Roundup, Music News, Pistol Review and More | 00:21:41
On this roundup episode of the Banned Biographies Podcast, your host, Tom Austin-Morgan, is back to let you know what’s been going on since the Aaron Pendergast Interview episode went out and what you can expect from the next one.
Firstly, I’d like to thank Aaron for the time he took to talk to me last month, again, apologies to you and him that the file wasn’t the cleanest. But I’m positive that the conversation was good enough and full of as much information as you could want about independent documentary making and of course, The Blasting Room itself.
I also talk about the gigs I've played this month, going to see The Sewer Cats play live at my local music venue, the fact I can't go and see Adam Ant tonight because I and Adam Ant both contracted Covid on the same day, all the news from the world of punk and alternative music including stories about Kurt Cobain's Smells Like Teen Spirit guitar being sold for a ridiculous sum of money, That Petrol Emotion, the death of Depeche Mode's Andy "Fletch" Fletcher, Flogging Molly, Mount Westmore, Blondie and Dropkick Murphys among others.
Finally I review of some of the music released this month as well as Pistol, the FX TV series directed by Danny Boyle, about the Sex Pistols.
Be sure to get in touch on social media or email to let me know what you thought of Pistol (if you've watched it) as well as anything else you want to have a chat about, and do go to Apple Music to leave a rating and review, it really does help and you get the review read out on the show! Until next time, take care and stay safe.

07 Jan 2024 | Interview with Jason Potbelly (Potbelly) | 01:18:28
On this special interview episode of the Banned Biographies podcast, host Tom Austin-Morgan chats with Jason Potbelly, the co-lead vocalist, guitarist and driving force behind Washington-based punk band Potbelly. The band has been around and touring since 1995 and has built up quite the community by producing split EPs and compilation albums with a plethora of well-known and unsigned bands over the years as well as relentlessly touring around North America. In fact, they’ve released over 100 recordings over the years, so many that even Jason can’t remember the names of them all, as you’ll hear!
Potbelly is finally coming to the UK this summer and I’ll be playing with them at their first show in London in July with my band Swampstomper (more details will follow once the full line up is confirmed and announced.
Jason has so many stories from seeing the cream of the Seattle grunge scene play tiny venues and house parties in the 80s and 90s to insights about the political environment of the US and the crazy goings on in his area during covid, as well as booking tours and touring in the days before the internet when you had to use maps and phone books!
You can find Potbelly by visiting PIG Records and on Facebook as well as on ReverbNation as well as the other streaming sites. If you search for them look for the logo with the scary-looking cartoon pig!
