06 Sep 2022 | Do What You Love with Patricia J Ricketts | 00:24:04
Patricia ‘Trisha’ Ricketts received a lifelong love of music, the written word, the visual arts, and healthy arguing from her Irish Catholic family of origin. She’s been penning essays, short stories, poems, and novels for most of her life as she raised three wonderful children and has watched seven grandchildren growing. However, after receiving a scholarship to the University of Edinburgh in Creative Writing, her passion for writing escalated. Since then, she has had short stories published in New Directions, The Slate, Meta, The Blue Hour Magazine, Realize Magazine, Storied Stuff and on NPR’s “This I Believe” website. Her love of writing flows into her musical lyrics. During the pandemic, she’s written nearly a song a week—some better than others! Trisha has performed her own work at open mics and hosted musical events in and around Chicago with her artist and musician partner, Peter Hurley. Having recently published her second novel, Speed of Dark, she is way into working on her third novel, The End of June, due out in fall 2023. What You Will Hear in This Episode:
Quotes “If I start writing something and I think, oh, this is terrible. I'm okay with that because I trust just down the road, something is going to emerge.” “When my emotions are completely engaged, whether it's with the lyrics or the melody first, those are some of my better songs.” “ Don't be afraid to fail because failure is not a permanent situation or perspective, it's just another trial.” “It's important to share what we have with each other, because you never know who you're going to be mentoring.” “I believe wholeheartedly that we all have talent. All of us have a talent and a dream, but we fail to acknowledge it for fear of failing.” “My philosophy is to not take talent or your time for granted each day brings an opportunity to spread your wings, try new things, be willing to stumble and learn at any age” Mentioned: https://bonniemarcusleadership.com/ https://web.facebook.com/bonnie.marcus/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/bonniemarcus https://twitter.com/selfpromote https://www.instagram.com/self_promote_/ Gendered Ageism Survey Results 5 Tips to own the superpower of your age Purchase my book Not Done Yet on Amazon: If you enjoyed this episode of Badass Women Podcast, then make sure to subscribe to the podcast and drop us a five-star review.

08 Feb 2022 | The Understory of Survival with Michelle Schuman | 00:35:29
Michelle Schuman overcame many difficult challenges to prove her worth as a female in a male-dominated profession. She is a great example of a true badass, mission-driven, courageous woman overcoming challenges and finding her purpose. Michelle is an environmental scientist with over four decades of experience in Alaska. She was a first responder to the Exxon oil spill, analyzing one of the most devastating and long-term, man-caused disasters in North American history. Michelle is passionate about protecting those who are underserved and undervalued. As a woman working for the federal government, she had to work harder for less pay than her male co-workers. She resigned from federal service in 1987, expanding her professional career into private consulting, state government and wetland science, and oil spill response. Although she suffered an unbearable loss, and the dangers of working in remote areas of Alaska, she never gave up. The true threat to her survival was not from the natural world but from the world of men who sought to tame her. Her book, The Understory: The Tale of a Women Environmentalist in the Land of the Midnight Sun, launched in January 2022. It is her personal story and memoir that shares her challenges as a female in a male-dominated profession and her adventures exploring endangered ecosystems around the world.
What You Will Hear in This Episode: Michelle's personal journey to where she is today What were the drivers for her being a badass at an early age What attracted her to environmental science Why did she turn down a job with the Forest Service as a wildlife biologist Her experience working in Alaska as a range scientist The challenges she had to go through to prove her worth as a female soil scientist to her male counterparts Her fight to give justice to her husband, who was killed in a car accident in Alaska Issue of gender bias she faced because of being a female The time when she was reassigned from her job due to sheer politics What she learned about herself throughout her journey What she regrets and wants to change in her journey
Notable Quotes: "Women are wired for a reason, to be the nurturers, the fixers, and the protectors." "A mother will fight to death for the protection of her young ones." "The most important mother we have is mother earth. And she is fighting back right now." "It's always nice to have support and to believe in yourself that you can do whatever you want to do." "So much of our energy as women is focused externally, fighting to get some recognition in a male dominated space where we're very often set up to fail. That takes so much of our energy and focus that we don't have the awareness that we need to take care of ourselves, we need to know who we are."

Never afraid to ask questions, Dr. Elizabeth questioned her medical education, which taught her to prescribe medications, and took a deep dive into the root cause of cardiovascular diseases. Discovering that diet and nutrition are the main contributors to cardiovascular disease, she decided to do something about it. Dr. Elizabeth Klodas has dedicated her career to preventive cardiology. Trained at Mayo Clinic and John Hopkins, she serves as the Chief Medical Officer for Step One Foods. She is a nationally sought out speaker and has an active role at the American College of Cardiology. She says some days she hopes to put herself out of work or to focus on some other endeavor.

Why don't we make that a health promoting activity as opposed to a health destroying one.” “Heart disease kills more women than all cancers combined.” “So we have to remember that the foundation of healthy longevity is living well. It’s taking care of yourself, it’s taking time to exercise, it’s taking time for stress management. “My greatest mission is not just food, it's empowerment. It's helping people learn about the things they can do themselves to help themselves heal. Physicians are important. The healthcare system is amazing, but there's a lot you can do for yourself that we can't do.”

12 Jul 2022 | From Rock Star to Gerontology with Brett Anderson | 00:36:58
Brett Anderson is a great example of a woman who realized that her direction no longer served her and made a huge shift in her life and career. At the height of their popularity, Brett Anderson and her band, The Donnas, were rock stars. The Palo Alto band made eight records in the early 2000’s, performed on Saturday Night Live , The Late Show with David Letterman and The Main Stage at Lollapalooza. At a certain point though, Brett realized that she didn't want to, “burn hot and flare out early”. Now at 42, she's graduating from USC with a master's in gerontology and getting a master's in social work from UCLA. Brett has a specific interest in aging and addiction. She says that in rock and roll, you wanna live fast and die young. In gerontology, it’s the total opposite of that. We're trying to live as long as we can and as well as we can.
What You Will Hear in This Episode:
Quotes “You have to have luck and then you have to be able to back it up with your attitude.” “I had this awareness and familiarity with the fact that it's difficult to age in this country. It’s getting worse and we need people to focus on the systems from the macro to the micro level of how we're gonna deal with this” “Internalized ageism is one of the most toxic things around.”

12 Apr 2022 | Embracing the Joy of Aging with Siobhan Daniels | 00:38:54
Boldly and unapologetically letting the world know about gendered ageism, Siobhan Daniels is inspiring women to step out of their comfort zone and follow their retirement dreams. By her mid 50’s Siobhan felt burnout whilst battling with menopause symptoms and facing ageism and bullying at work. Feeling broken, she found herself sobbing in a bathroom at work, realizing she needed a change. Acting on that need, Siobhan took a year and backpacked, solo, around the world. This remarkable trip changed her forever and she began to develop her plan to one day travel the United Kingdom in a motorhome. In 2019, Siobhan took early retirement, sold her belongings, bought a motorhome and embarked on a trip around Great Britain. Retired from the BBC after a 30 year career as a reporter, presenter and producer in local news, Siobhan overcame many challenges including working full time as a single mom. She now passionately champions positive aging, constantly calling out ageism and ageist stereotypes and refusing to accept the narrow stereotypes of retired women. Siobhan uses her blog, instagram, published articles, public speaking activities and soon to be published book, to challenge and change the narrative around aging. Since embarking on this journey, Sobhian has had to face her fears, weather severe storms and of course the pandemic. This has also made her feel more alive than ever, in control, at one with nature and totally inspired to get her message of the importance of embracing aging out to young and old. Because technology is the fastest growing industry on the planet, because it is pervasive and it shows up in all of the different places in our lives, you need talent, you need human capital to power that, to make that continue to grow and so there's space for all kinds of minds, and it doesn't just have to be the kid that got an 800 in math on his SATs, “At the end of the day, all of these trappings and all the pretty words about what Bitwise is and does it all comes down to whether that person found a way to take advantage of the opportunity to change their own lives and then implicit in our culture is, did you take that and then use it to deliberately contribute to the success of somebody else? 14 Jun 2022 | Meet The Queenagers with Eleanor Mills | 00:40:14
Despite being the only woman in the room early in her career, Eleanor Mills had a successful, rocket propelled career in journalism. Blindsided by her termination at the age of 49, Eleanor was determined to do something different and counteract the perception of women in the media. Eleanor is founder and CEO of Noon, a new platform for women in midlife. She campaigns to challenge gendered ageism and to change the narrative around the later stages of women’s lives to one which is more optimistic and fit for purpose. She believes that 50 is the age of opportunity where we become the women we were supposed to be. She wants women to look forward to midlife as their prime. Eleanor became a founder at 50, having spent 25 year as an editor, columnist, interviewer and editorial director of the Times of London. She was chair of Women in Journalism UK from 2014-2021 and has campaigned around the media’s male lens and diversity for 3 decades. She, along with Accenture, recently undertook the largest research project to date on women 45-60 called Meet The Queenagers. Eleanor exists to help women through the pinch points of midlife and into a new chapter and to challenge the cultural story that midlife women are peaches, one wrinkle and you’re out, while men of the same vintage are seen as fine wine, improving with age. Eleanor is challenging this framing as the last bastien of feminism. The voices of older women go unheard in nearly all cultures and Eleanor says, “This must change.”
