My name is Corina Roobeck, and with my co-host Emma Mathews we will be doing precisely that. In each episode, we will take a bad work story from our client's work, the media, or even a bad work story you have experienced, and get some good out of it. “

We care about this stuff and it hasn't gotten much better. Our teams, our clients, and the planet need our full attention, creativity, and compassion to get out of the drama and into the good stuff quicker and stronger. So jump in with us.

13 Oct 2022The leader is dead, long live the team00:14:16

Tell us what you like about our show and share your Bad work stories so we can help. Thanks Emma & Corina

Welcome to bad work stories made good.

My name is Corina Roobeck, and with my co-host Emma Mathews we will be doing precisely that - in each episode, we will take a bad work story from our client's work, the media, or even your own bad work story and get some good out of it.

This recording was made in July 2022 at a time when the then PM of the UK Boris Johnson had just resigned, Wimbledon had freshly crowned its champions, and Europe was experiencing its hottest days in history. In NZ, winter storms had us looking forward to spring.

Join Emma and Corina as they riff on topics of the month starting with the rise of the concept of “Teamliness” over the traditional solo leader, Wimbledon celebrations, political campaigning, and whatever else emerges in their conversation.

Is the "bad work story" our love of Solo power, and is the "made good" element the collective smarts of the team?  Listen to find out.

Since this recording was made, the UK has appointed a New Prime Minister, and on the death of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, a new King is in residence.

Please note this episode comes with a trigger warning of occasional swearing and mention of nudity and, yes, menopause symptoms. No humans or animals were harmed in the production.

Enjoy the episode.

Tell us what you like about our show and share your Bad work stories so we can help. Thanks Emma & Corina

Join Emma and Corina as they riff on the bad work story of today -  Competitior vs culture. It can be scary to call out bad behavior in a meeting whether it's directed at you or you witness it. When we ignore behaviors that feel ‘off’ or are an obvious departure from what we say we believe ( our values) we actively decrease trust and safety in our team. It's on all of us to show up in these moments.

Points covered:

  • The collateral damage that occurs when competitive behaviors go unchallenged
  • The Acknowledge and Continue Strategy
  • The Pause and Address Strategy

17 Nov 2022Congrats you're promoted! The 2 jobs for 1 pay deal00:11:26

Tell us what you like about our show and share your Bad work stories so we can help. Thanks Emma & Corina

Join Emma and Corina as they riff on the bad work story of today -  Working twice for the money.

Congrats you got the promotion, bad news is you need to also do your old job until we find a replacement. How do we treat our high performers and what can you do when this happens to you?

Points covered:

  • Without purpose and support, this is a practice that is unkind and can lead to burnout.
  • An opportunity to put values into action and take care of our High Performers and lift up the whole team in a creative way.
  • If this is you - go beyond your fear of rocking the boat and ask for what you need. Manage expectations from the start.
  • And if this is happening with your direct reports - you need to be proactive and ask the questions and keep watch. Signs of overworking and stress.

The team member leading the meeting did what they were asked to do, felt terrible and now seeks alternative actions beyond the stronger words they had in their mind! We share several strategies to deal with this specific situation.

Points covered:

  • Culture is your set-up for success tool.
  • Deal with trouble spots you know of in advance and be direct.
  • Be careful of what behaviours from leaders you tolerate
  • How not to summarise and what to suggest instead
  • How trust, presence and emergence can be your friend
  • The ‘Apologise and Let Go’ Strategy or the Rocky Strategy ( Corina’s dog) - change your position and go to sleep on the floor

Emma and Corina are on a mission to stop bad work stories. Work need not be a place of drama and suffering.

We take everyday situations and apply practical and kind strategies to improve them.

Add them to your leadership and facilitation toolkit.

2 weeks ago we did an episode that looked behind the scenes of the Womens Football World Cup and how the women involved need to double down on their resilience for games played off the field. When the Spanish team took to the winners podium, the President of their Governing Body grabbed the Spanish Captain, held her head with both hands and kissed her on the mouth. He said it was consensual. Jenni Hermoso said it was not. Local and Global outrage unfolded and finally 3 weeks after the final ( in the day we planned to record this episode) the Spanish federation issued an apology to all its shareholders and fired the victorious Spanish Coach, The President is still refusing to resign and as of today ( one day after recording) Jenni has filed a complaint against him for Sexual assault.

Points covered:

  • Why we need to talk about this and not ignore it
  • How do we use this public and now global situation to increase dialogue within our teams on personal space and appropriate touching in celebration settings
  • What to do when your boundaries are crossed.
