18 Oct 2019Ep 186 - George Rendall on rise and fall of Mile 27 runner's coffee shop01:31:09

Send us a text

We know cyclists have a ton of places they can hang out socially (so we can avoid those places...), but what about runners?

Well, the runner's cafe Mile 27 aimed to offer a place for runner's to come together to both run, socialise and be a community in central London. And it worked... for a time.

In this episode, Jody and David speak to its founder George Rendall about the idea behind the cafe/club, what it took to get working and what happened in the end (spoiler: he has another coffee shop, Lane Eight Coffee in Dulwich)

The great thing about this episode is how open and honest George is about everything that went wrong and why it didn't quite work as planned. A real insight into trying to turn your ideas into reality.

27 Nov 2015Ep 14 - Should you drink (alcohol) and run?01:14:11

Send us a text

It's as close to a specialist subject as Jody and David have... it's talking booze and running.

(SPOILER: The answer is YES)

If you've not already done it please cast your vote for Bad Boy Running at The Running Awards 2016 (www.therunningawards.com) - you'll find us in the Online & Publication/Online Community section. Thanks!

HEALTH WARNING! Please do not consider anything they say as medically accurate or sensible. They have developed hardy livers to go with their callused feet.

Here's some of the beer-fuelled banter in this episode:

  • A superb demonstration by Jody and David why becoming a BBR sponsor is potentially the worst idea for an advertiser
  • David shows a worrying lack of knowledge about female-based yeast infections
  • Why Bad Boy Running is BIG in Japan and why Norway is the best place and
  • How you can be the No.1 Bad Boy Running fan in your country (and possibly get arrested for the cause)
  • David finds a way to try and spark Middle Eastern conflict among listeners of BBR and upset the Saudis
  • Jody is properly loved up about running club and has something of a monetary revelation
  • David upsets Jody by playing back his experience at the last Marathon du Medoc
  • How to avoid getting a hangover (and no, the answer isn’t NOT DRINKING)
  • Jody and David reveal the crafty, slightly worrying, place you can always sleep if you’re drunk…
  • David talks about joining the Hash House Harriers
  • Revealed! The weirdest bar in Finsbury Park
  • David reveals the actual source of beer bellies (an ACTUAL medical fact in BBR!)
  • “A little bit of alcohol does you no harm…”
  • Jody asks David about why he set up Beer Belly Running

27 Mar 2020Ep 208 - Tim Shieff on his quest for ultimate health and performance03:01:37

Send us a text

Tim Shieff is a freerunning champion, Ninja Warrior and former OCR competitor. But it's not necessarily his athletic achievements that always get the headlines.

Tim has been on a journey through his life to find the optimal combination of nutrition and lifestyle to complement his activities - which has led him down some unconventional routes.

Jody and David discuss this with him before moving onto the subject of veganism - which Tim vehemently rejects having been a prominent vegan for many years.

There's actually VEGAN CUT in this episode at 1:33 if you want to skip straight to it or AVOID it completely.

This is a long single episode because the guys had recording issues halfway through and Jody wasn't able to join the discussion about veganism. So there is a longer discussion after the interview. And it's not your usual bants. :)

06 Dec 2015Ep 20 - Day 6, Training runs (12 Days of Xmas)00:21:28

Send us a text

For Christmas, Jody and David sing out their 12 Days of Bad Boy Christmas... and it's very different from the original.

Bad news.... #12DaysofBadBoyXmas has ONLY JUST HIT HALFWAY!

(Honestly, Jody and David pushing through to the end...)

On Day 6, Jody and David discuss great places to do your training runs.

And David comes up with one of the strangest places to do a tempo run.

Yes, really odd.

10 Apr 2020Ep 210 - The hilarious true story of the 1904 Olympic Marathon with Nic Sampson01:19:37

Send us a text

Running isn't exactly the funniest subject (not if you've listened to BBR for a while...)

But it seems there is comedy gold in the re-telling of the infamous 1904 Olympic marathon in St Louis. And Nic Sampson is the man to do it.

Nic is a stand up comedian with a one-person show dedicated to the utter craziness of what happened at the 1904 Marathon. If you don't know, don't Google it... just listen to this episode and marvel at how utterly Do-Badder the whole thing was.

12 Oct 2017Ep 96 - Jonathan Albon, OCR World Champ01:27:41

Send us a text

We've got an epic two-parter with OCR World Champ and Skyrunner, Jonathan Albon.

Before the guys speak to Jon, David recalls his experience of this year's Marathon du Medoc, reveals a challenge by Monkey Tennis podcast, talks "easter eggs" and reveals why he has a beer named after him.

Then the guys speak with Jon Albon (interview starts on 42 minutes, if you want to skip ahead like Fi Silk...)

In this episode, Jon reveals:

  • How he got started running and his crazy-good first ever race (you won't believe his first ever race time)
  • How he progressed in the sport and became involved in OCR and then Skyrunning
  • His 30 second sleep trick at that infamous Winter Nuts
  • How he preps for races and how he trains away from running
  • ... and his exact stats (so you can compare and contrast... and weep)

Listen to this episodes and you'll get a glimpse into the mind of a serious competitor and champion (... so it's a pretty big contrast from Jody and David's ramblings)

11 Dec 2020Ep 244 - The story of Athlete Refugee Team with Richard Bullock02:04:31

Send us a text

Three years in the making, Run is a documentary film centred around the personalities and stories in The Athlete Refugee team. Directed by Richard Bullock, the film originally started off a short segment about the world refugee running team and snowballed into a full-length documentary as the story twisted and turned its way towards the Olympics.

During the process, Richard discovered the challenges facing displaced people and how running can change their fortunes and bringing people together (as well as its limitations).

In this episode Jody and David speak to Richard about the athletes and stories involved and what has become of the team since the Olympics was postponed due to coronavirus.

28 Oct 2016Ep 64 - Red Bull Steeplechase (plus more cheating talk)01:36:27

Send us a text

Jody and David start out strong by discussing 'summiting' which is a new word to be added to the Bad Boy Running Dictionary. They then talk about the rise of the kilometre and newer races which cover a more non-standard racing distance.

This week's big philosophical question is why is the 1500m race not a mile? After puzzling over that the guys focus on this episode's main topic - the Red Bull Steeplechase! How did David get on? Did he finish? Did he place? Did he do it legally? Well listen to find out.

We also conclude with some scandal talk!

24 Dec 2015Ep12 Pt2 - Another catch-up episode and listener feedback00:48:54

Send us a text

Warning! If you've not listened to another Bad Boy Running Podcast before, probably best not to start with this one... everything in this relates to other episodes.

Wondered what had happened to all those challenges Jody and David set in the earlier episodes?

No?

Oh, well... you're going to hate the second part of this episode then as we catch-up on everything they've been up to, including:

  • David gives an update on his Kenyan friend Boaz, who despite talking with him is still not convinced he’s a real person
  • David reveals exactly what he’s done to get Jody into the ultramarathon theatre film… mainly consisting of lying about Jody’s acting credentials
  • In a question from a listener, when is it acceptable to return the runner’s nod and how do you do it without looking dodgy?
  • We re-open the DNF debate… and listeners give their feedback
  • David realises his ‘humble’ approach may have made him more enemies
  • Jody suggests using the Mourinho approach to winning races and not “looking like a cock”
  • The guys veer into talking about the Marathon des Sables (again) and somehow end up attacking IronMan competitors (again)
  • A general call out for more stupid challenges and feedback in the Facebook group

25 May 2018Ep 116 - Thomas Blanc on running Survival Nicaragua01:51:49

Send us a text

It's a cracker of an episode this week with Jody and David speaking to the legendary Thomas Blanc, OCR athlete, adventure runner and now quality manager for Spartan.

They specifically discuss Thomas's recent running of Survival Nicaragua and everything competitors had to do on this crazy-ass race.

 Here's what you'll discover:

  • Why a career in agriculture and farming is the best preparation for the race
  • Why running with your sister is ALWAYS better than running with your partner
  • Why you should NEVER replace eggs with children
  • What Thomas's exact role is for Spartan and how he run his eye over Spartan races to make sure they're up to scratch
  • How he had to bribe a Greek farmer to get his Spartan Spartan race run

Of course, there's the usual catch-up shenanigans from Jody and David before and after, including an unprecedented amount of time dedicated to just two Netflix recommendations and discussing the question "why would you ever run Barklay Marathons?".

Which means the Silk Cut is at a punchy 32 minutes (skip ahead if you just want to hear the soothing tone of Thomas's silky Gallic voice).

Salut!

03 May 2019Ep 163 - The joy of running every single street with Rickey Gates02:32:04

Send us a text

Rickey Gates has done some pretty interesting runs in his time - in fact, he's something of a pioneer when it comes to inventing new challenges for himself that inevitably leads to others following.

In this episode, David and Jody speak with Rickey about his most recent challenge - running every single street in San Francisco, not an easy feat considering the hills the city is known for.

  • The reason Rickey moved away from his beloved trails to take on the most urban of urban running challenges "Every Single Street"
  • Why distance isn’t the only challenge when running San Fran (listen out for the elevation!)
  • How he planned and plotted his route through the city
  • Rickey reveals his “dark alleyway” policy when running through the city
  • What really most surprised Rickey about San Francisco running
  • How others are now taking on the Every Single Street challenge
  • Why he started the FKT Project
  • Rickey's insightful view on the reason behind the rise of FKTs

David also ponders the possibility of using one of Rickey's famous running adventures as his and Claire's honeymoon...

Farmer by day, Nicky is an outstanding fell runner and has completed doubles of the UK's most difficult rounds, including double Bob Graham (England), double Paddy Buckley Round (Wales) and the double Ramsey Round (Scotland). And that's not even mentioning the slew of races including UTMB, Dragon's Back, Grand Raid Pyrenees and Grand Race Reunion.

In short, she's an ultrarunning badass... and she's speaking with BBR.

14 Feb 2020Ep 201 - Nick Butter on running a marathon in every country (Part 1)01:30:12

Send us a text

Dorset runner Nick Butter's passport must be in a right state.

Nick recently became the first runner ever to complete a marathon in all 196 countries in the world.

In this episode, Allie and David speak to Nick about how the whole adventure came together and exactly how you bring such an endeavour to reality in terms of logistics and funding (clue: it's tough!)

As befitting such an adventure, this episode is split into two parts. This shouldn't need explaining but we will because there's always one but... you need to listen to Part 1 first (this episode) and THEN listen to Part 2 (Ep 202 - which isn't out yet but will be when we publish it).

15 May 2020Ep 215 - Dean Karnazes on CBD and Spartan Trail Champs01:47:00

Ok, you *probably* weren't expecting this... but we got Dean Karnazes talking cannabis.

Yeah, not in that way, but more about his partnership with a CBD brand offering running supplements.

This is the second time Dean has appeared on the podcast and he's always a great guest.

He also takes the time to talk about his relationship with Spartan as they move into the ultrarunning space as well as his clothing preference when he's indoors.

(Hint: don't accept any offers to stay over at Dean's, ok?)

This is another good one.

17 Apr 2018Ep 118 - Brighton Marathon, Arran Ultra, Monarch's Way, Mike Bushell01:29:05

Send us a text

It's a catch-up episode with Jody and David and, for once, they're talking about running.

In this episode you'll learn:

  • Why Mike Bushell is clearly playing for laughs at the Commonwealth Games
  • How BBR have managed to end up at the Running Awards again (and still with no sign of a trophy...)
  • David reveals another romantic gesture from an old flame that went horribly wrong when the lady in question failed to understand his esoteric reference
  • Jody explains his Sub4 failure at Brighton Marathon and why it's better to run a 4:40 than a 4:01
  • A full list of all the things Jody got wrong on his marathon...
  • ... and the one thing he got right (i.e. the location)
  • What is absolutely amazing about being a Do-Badder
  • An introduction to a race you may not have heard of before... that begins with M and ends in "onarch's Way"
  • Why BBR is the best community on the internet (seriously, guys and ladies, we LOVE you...)
  • David talks through his Arran Ultra experience and his surprisingly hard second day racing
  • The boggy joy that one Do-Badder founds themselves stuck in
  • How David managed to get Caffeine Bullet promotion in despite racing

Sorry, Fi. There's no Silk Cut in this episode - it's just Jody and David.

17 Apr 2020Ep 211 - Joe Oldendorf on crawling 12 hours to save his life01:19:52

Send us a text

Do you have a survivor's instinct?

Would you step up when the chips are down and your life was on the line? Or would you crumble into a sobbing, pathetic mess like a triathlete who lost their left shoe in transition?

On this episode, the guys speak with Joe Oldendorf - a true survivor.

Joe went out for 20 mile long run on a remote trail in his home of Washington State and fell and broke his leg after 12 miles. His injury was so severe he was unable to walk.

Fortunately, he had his phone. Unfortunately, there was no signal.

So, he crawled for 12 hours to get within phone signal range so he could call 911. 12 hours!

David speaks to Joe about his experience and what kept him going for that amount of time with his ankle detached from his tibia. (Urgh!)

This is properly inspiring.

This Podcast features James Appleton talking to the guys about, well, everything really. They cover Tough Guy, fell running, and photography.

The guys also hear an exclusive piece of news from James, so listen out for that nearer the end. This interview is so packed with information that the intro possibly breaks the BBR record for being one of the shortest we've ever done. Listen up and get ready to think about planning your next holiday in the Lake District.

Send us a text

This is the second part of the episode where David interviews Will Rial, international athlete manager for sports management agency, Run-Fast.

If you've not listened to the first episode, we'd suggest you go back and listen to that first before this one.

The discussion continues with David discussing with Will:

  • How sports management agencies draft in the right type of runners
  • How they manage runners to maximise the money they get from races
  • What's the purpose of different types of bonuses and fees
  • How the agency selects the different races and picks who challenges who
  • What the effect is on the racers and their families when they're under contract
  • Why even the big runners still keep it real

The Silk Cut on the second part is just 5 minutes.

14 Nov 2017Ep 101 - Camille Herron on breaking the 100 mile record01:42:46

Send us a text

Ok, this week's episode is a bit special. And not in that way.

Bad Boy Running has bumped this right up the schedule because we had Camille booked in to speak to Jody and David simply for her badass drinking antics (and the fact she's sponsored by a brewery).

But as if by a huge amount of luck, Camille ( @runcamille ) only went and broke the 100 mile record at the Tunnel Hill 100 #TunnelHill100... on her FIRST attempt at a 100 miler.

CRAZY!

It's a slightly shorter interview with Camille on this episode but the guys manage to pack in:

  • How Camille manages to sneak in a beer or two on the race and how she discovered it as a race strategy (she even has a medical explanation which leaves the lads confused)
  • Exactly what Camille eats when she's running her 100 milers (or any race)
  • Why her weekly mileage will make your eyes water (no, seriously. SERIOUSLY this is ridiculous)
  • Why she decided to make the transition from road ultras to trail
  • And what she's planning next

Seriously, this is a great one.

07 Feb 2020Ep 200 - From prisoner to pro-triathlete with Ger Redmond01:48:10

Send us a text

Ger Redmond's story is fascinating. From a budding career as a professional footballer, his life was up-ended when tragedy hit his family. His situation led him into a life of crime where he ended up in prison.

However, upon his release he discovered the Ironman event and started upon a new path to become a pro-triathlete. The rest, they say, is history.

Jody and David speak to Ger about his history and what it took to leave behind the life he had to find a new path.

Unfortunately for Jody, Ger also reveals how he managed to go from never having run an Ironman to completing one in just six months! (No pressure there, Jody...)

It's an eye-opening episode, that's sure to keep you gripped.

A few weeks ago, Jody and David provided swabs to DNAFit who tested and produced a profile for both. On this podcast, you'll discover:

  • How he's famous in Botswana for a surprising (but very Do-Badder) reason
  • Why David may have been training wrong all this time
  • Why your genes will always be secondary to something far more powerful

Having switched styles in the past David offers his view on why he did it, having had run-ins with shoes that forced him to change running styles, Jody explains why he hasn't. All of this as well as barefoot running, Chi Running and the seemingly oxymoronic 'barefoot shoes' are discussed in what turns out to be a dangerously informative podcast.

25 Oct 2019Ep 187 - Holly Rush on running influencers, PBs and switching to ultras02:13:53

Send us a text

Boy, is Holly Rush an interesting guest in this episode of Bad Boy Running!

(And Jody and David didn't make a single joke about nominative determinism!)

Starting out in marathons as fun runner, Holly explains her journey from standing as a spectator watching with a beer to going all the way to the European Championships and representing England and Great Britain.

She talks about her frustration at trying to beat a PB that just wouldn't fall and her eventual move into ultrarunning.

That, in itself, is a fascinating story, but now Holly leads the Asics Frontrunner programme that brings on ordinary runners as ambassadors for the brand. David quizzes Holly on the programme and her thoughts about running social media influencers and the direction of the sport.

And then the discussion turns to Marathon Talk for which Holly is a presenter.

08 Sep 2018Ep 130 - Rhonda-Marie Parke on running the 500km Vol State Ultramarathon01:49:30

Send us a text

Jody and David once again speak to blind ultrarunner, adventurer and Stateside Do-Badder, Rhonda-Marie Parke (she got married!).

She's back and talking about completing her latest challenge, the 500k Vol State Ultramarathon that runs through five states. Oh yeah, and she did it all UNGUIDED.

There be much insanity in this episode.

In this episode you'll discover:

  • Why you DON'T want to cross the finish line of this race (you will literally die)
  • Why lovely long open roads are a very different proposition at night
  • How Rhonda-Marie dealt with all the factors aside from the 300+ miles she had to run
  • Why this may Rhonda-Marie's last ever ultramarathon
  • Rhonda-Marie's "coyote strategy" for dealing with packs of coyotes (seriously...)
  • The perils of running without a guide
  • Her race strategy for staying ahead of the pack (both coyotes and other runners)
  • The close call at the end of the race when a HUGE storm came in
  • How she's coping with not running because of a stress fracture

Before the interview, Jody and David discuss a surprising running club and get into a discussion about running and motivation.

Somehow, David suggests a new challenge for Jody to break his 5k PB time. And it could result in Jody getting divorced.

But they need your suggestions to make the challenge work. Listen in and head over to the Facebook group to post your ideas.

17 Mar 2017Ep 79 - The A to Z of Bad Boy Running (Part 1)01:50:33

Send us a text

Jody and David were worried. With all the new listeners, how were they going to continue making obtuse in-jokes and not alienate the audience?

Well, as one smart Do-Badder suggested: why not record an A-Z of Bad Boy Running covering all the references and in-jokes we made in all the previous episodes so it ALL MAKES SENSE.

(Of course, you could listen to all the previous episodes but this is a much more effective way of aggressively cornering your way to Do-Badder expertise...)

This may be useful if you're training for a marathon, ultramarathon, the Marathon des Sables or any OCR race (for SEO purposes, of course).

28 Jun 2019Ep 170 - GB running coach Nick Anderson on power in running02:22:43

Send us a text

Nick Anderson has a list of creds as long as a lap of Barkley.

He's a Level 4UKA coach, Great Britain and England Athletics running coach, head coach for Polar, Saucony and fistful of marathons and founder of Running With Us.

In short, Nick's one of the most respected and experienced coaches when it comes to running. So why is he anywhere near the BBR podcast, you ask?

Well, David collared Nick at the Marathon Expo to ask his views on several aspects of running, particular the role that power plays when it comes to racing.

If you want to latest research and advice from the man who's at the top of the game, this is the episode to listen to.

In this BBR Special Jody and David talk to John Kelly, endurance athlete and the only finisher at this year's Barkley Marathons.

John reveals his journey from not running to competing at Barkley three times until he finally achieved his goal of finishing, how he trains for Barkley and the mind games you go through when you're out on the course.

David isn't subtle in trying to pump him for all the information he can about entering, while Jody sees many parallels with his 4 Laps of Nuts drama (no-one else does, though...)

12 Jul 2019Ep 172 - Pamela Chapman Markle on running 100 miles as your first race02:00:28

Send us a text

Pamela Chapman Markle is a phenomenon. At the age of 55, she decided to take up running, thanks to the suggestion of a work colleague.

However, when she went to sign up for the Rocky Raccoon 50 miler (a pretty punchy first race, admittedly), it was full. Undeterred Pamela signed up for the Rocky Raccoon 100 miler instead... (yes, a 100 miler as her FIRST race!) and the rest is history.

Jody and David speak to Pamela about how she manages to hold down a full-time job while also kicking ass on ultras from the Keys Ultras to Badwater and the Brazil 135.

Enjoy!

04 Sep 2020Ep 230 - John Kelly on breaking the Pennine Way record (for a whole week)01:58:49

Send us a text

John Kelly makes BBR history as one of the few guests back for a third time.

(Bet that makes all those other records pale into significance...)

In this episode, Jody and David chat with John about breaking the decades-old record for running the length of the Pennine Way... only for Damian Hall to break it a week later.

There's some great stuff in this interview as John reveals his healthy rivalry/friendship with Damian and what went into this record.

John also talks about tackling the other big rounds and what it takes to succeed.

Another great episode with a BBR fave.

24 May 2017Ep 86 - Jody runs 100 Miles (and David gets angry at London)01:50:18

Send us a text

After a brief discussion of Lee’s progress on the Monarch’s Way, the guys talk about David’s ambitions to be a Celebrant which would give him to power to marry people (without their consent sometimes).

Twenty minutes in the guys give a formal intro to the podcast and then discuss the topics for today’s episode.

Jody runs very far, we find out his experience of this and how it compares to other races he’s done and David yells at people at London Marathon. All of the yelling is very justified.

12 Feb 2018Ep 108 - Allie Bailey on running Lake Khovsgol 10002:21:51

Send us a text

In this episode, David talks to Do-Badder Allie Bailey on her recent return from running the route of the Mongolia 100 - set to launch next year.

She explains exactly what went down when a handful of Do-Badders (and G-Law) did when they raced 100 miles across a frozen lake in Mongolia.

Allie reveals:

  • How the hell she got roped into doing it in the first place
  • The extremely limited diet of a Mongolia ultrarunner
  • Why you need to leave the wood burner in your yurt the hell alone if you don't want to end up naked in the middle of a frozen lake trying to cool down
  • The best strategy to get you from one side of the lake to the other
  • Why you WILL probably die if you run this race if you don't take it seriously and trying winging it like most Brits at multi-day events (yep, we're looking at you again MdS)
  • What the great and good of Mongolian government thought when they enjoyed an evening of vodka and more vodka with the Do-Badders

And David also takes this opportunity to introduce Allie as BBR's new roving interviewer/interviewee (he's not quite sure which...).

WELCOME ALLIE!

Even with the new level of maturity Allie brings to the podcast, Jody and David still try to pre-empt this by talking absolute rubbish before and after the interview.

The Silk Cut on this episode is around 55 minutes (woooooaaahhhh!)

13 May 2018Ep 119 - Matt Fitzgerald on 80/20 running and heart rate01:25:50

Send us a text

Ok, this has been a long time coming due to various technical issues with the recording but finally it's here.

Jody and David sit down with Matt Fitzgerald, author of multiple running books including 80/20 Running and Racing Weight.

They're specifically focused on 80/20 in this episode and the importance of managing intensity when training.

There's loads of great stuff in this interview with Matt and (fortunately for Fi Silk) very little chitter chatter from Jody and David - mainly because all that content was lost.

So finally - and probably far too late for your training to make any difference - here's Matt Fitzgerald talking 80/20.

06 Nov 2015Ep 11 - Should running be more elitist?00:41:18

Send us a text

If you were a fan of David from his Special Forces appearance, then this may be the episode that changes your opinion of him... (he goes into dark territory here.. only kidding!).

In this episode, we're talking about elitism in running and whether some competitions need to be more elitist to actually mean anything.

(Oh, and the Jody joining a running club saga continues to rumble on...)

Here's some of the japery you can expect:

  • Jody rolls out a new load of excuses and reveals the pitiful amount of running he’s done and cleverly tries to shift the blame for his lethargy by accusing David of being a poor motivator.
  • Jody rolls out a new load of excuses and reveals the pitiful amount of running he’s done and cleverly tries to shift the blame for his lethargy by accusing David of being a poor motivator.

  • Jody does a minimal amount of running and explains why he hasn’t been able to handle “the hilliest Parkrun in Sussex”.

  • David recounts his first race for ages and inadvertently qualifies for the World Championships

  • David explains why he’s not 100% convinced that’s he’s the best of the best of the best and why he won’t be going to the World Championships

  • Jody and David are rude about Ohio… for no real reason.

  • David tells a story about a friend who is inexplicably annoyed about a guy who invented a racket sport (the name of which David can’t remember) and has his own World Championships in that racket sport.

  • David asks the question - are the OCR World Championships elitist enough? (And alienates half the audience…)

  • Jody gets his Woody Allen mixed up with his Groucho Marx

  • 19:21 The point at which David loses friends and immediately offends Jody

  • Jody challenges David on the point of OCR and questions him on Tough Mudder

  • David uses the word ‘Strava’ again.

  • David goes all Socialist railing a

04 Sep 2015Ep 3 - Our worst races (Part 2)00:18:57

Send us a text

Continuing from Episode 2, this episode kicks off following Jody's revelation about how running Brighton Marathon with only 90 minutes notice was hands-down his worst marathon experience. Now it's David's turn to reveal his worst race experience.

The action continues…

  • David confesses to being about to tell a really bad joke… but then in revealing it, still manages to cause offence without gaining any benefit
  • David explains his worst race… without being able to name the race nor the start and end points of the race.
  • Why, as a race organiser, it’s not a great idea to get a bunch of squaddies on your bad side (things go from bad to worse)
  • David accidentally reveals the starting location… and pleads to have it bleeped out of the episode (we didn’t, of course)
  • David explains the moment when the relay team hit breaking point, how the organiser failed to pick up on the mutiny in his midst (despite everything that went wrong) and how he’s avoided saying “yes” ever again
  • Jody accuses David of neglecting his responsibility to the listeners… and David agrees
  • The moment we realise Bad Boy Running was a terrible name choice for the podcast (and we beg you to think of the podcast as gender neutral)
  • Where we open it up to you to let us know what your worst race was… and the kind of stuff we’re looking for
  • David reveals the incredibly “high tech” way you can give your opinion and feedback on the show and reads out letters from non-existent listeners
  • In a confusing twist, Jody reveals where he gets his hair cut (and how he shares his salon with a very important local figure)
  • Why you may want to revisit this episode if we ever make it to Episode 150 (we’re being a touch hopeful here)
  • David recklessly invents an email address and asks listeners to send their feedback, possibly prompting

21 Dec 2018Ep 143 - How to run a marathon with NO training with Ian McNamara01:25:53

Send us a text

Grit, strength, determination and ignorance...

... all qualities we admire and are essential when running your first marathon.

But what if you ran your first marathon without ANY training at NIGHT and with a SIX HOUR cut-off (oh, and you'd been drinking all day...)?

Sounds ridiculous, right?

Well, that's exactly what Ian McNamara did and his story of losing a bet and running his first marathon on no training made it to the pages of UNILAD.

Here's the story, if you didn't see it: https://www.unilad.co.uk/video/guy-completes-entire-marathon-without-training-as-punishment-for-losing-fantasy-football/

We'll level with you. Ian is a hero for our times, and we discover just how ridiculous this challenge was (and how funny) during the chat.

That's not all!

Allie co-hosts with David this week and takes the chance to talk about the Namibian Race To The Wreck and they discuss parkrun's decision to close down Facebook groups as well as the National Running Show coming up soon.

Brendan is a complete do-badder. A self-confessed party animal, who was significantly overweight made a drunken bet to run a half-marathon, even though he'd never run before.  He knuckled down and ran an incredible 1:24.

Since then he's used his love of running to raise money to build accommodation for African orphans by running over 4,000km across African.

30 Jul 2018Ep 125 - How to compete in the Olympics with Andrew Steele02:19:41

Send us a text

It's another returnee to the Bad Boy Running podcast.

After the DNAFit episode with Andrew Steele where Jody and David faced off to see who had the best genes (David won), Andrew returns to talk about his time as an Olympian.

Andrew spent 12 years as an Olympic athlete competing in the 400 metres and 4x400 metre relay for Team GB and won a bronze medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games (although not *actually* at the games... he explains why).

If you want an insider's view of what it's like to train for and compete in the Olympics, this is the episode for you.

Plus there's the usual updates and jibber jabber from Jody and David, (and Jody seems to go full "support group" on us). All will be revealed in the episode.

31 Jan 2020Ep 199 - Rob Koehler, ex-WADA deputy director general on doping02:18:17

Send us a text

Wow, we’ve got a treat of an episode for you.

For many months, Jody and David have time and again brought up the issue of doping as the subject seems to permeate every discussion of athletic achievement. Now, to separate fact from fiction, the chaps speak to former World Anti-Doping Association deputy director general Rob Koehler who offers an inside look at the issues at hand and the state of athletics today. He also explains why he feels ALL Russian athletes should be banned at the Olympics.

This really is an eye-opener and worth a listen.

Rob also discusses his new role as head of Global Athlete, an athletes advocacy group with the power to stand up to brands and associations where power is entrenched (you won’t believe how bad this is until you hear his examples of this happening!).

Plus there’s some gibberish from the guys before the interview gets started.

Enjoy!

Send us a text

On this week’s episode Jody and David speak with Mike Seamsn, founder of The National Running Show set for Birmingham NEC in January 19-20.

Ok they come clean. This is their attempt at trying to takeover a national event for runners for their own nefarious purposes... and they may have just done it...

In this episode you will discover:

  • Why Mike set up the National Running Show
  • Why Race-based expos are, well... just a bit of a silly idea
  • The absolutely best way to get to the show (Bad Boy Guarantee)
  • Why the queue for the show may just be THE place to be (if you want to be a record-breaker)
  • How Jody and David manage to wangle a stand

09 Mar 2018Ep 112 - Seville Marathon and Brighton Half Marathon01:26:50

Send us a text

David returns from a running weekend in Spain to talk about his race with Briggsy and Jody recounts Libby's Brighton half marathon endeavours in this partner-focused episode.

But not before taking aim at a certain Radio 1 DJ...

In this episode you'll hear:

  • Why Greg James might be the new Eddie Izzard (and why he's the unluckiest guy on earth picking this time to do his Three Peaks Challenge)
  • Why Drake is the dullest pop star in the history of music (no idea...)
  • David tries out some Eminem-style rapping (the result is just as bad as it sounds)
  • Why going to Barcelona is a bit like visiting Wales
  • David makes a bold claim about the finish at Seville Marathon...
  • ... and reveals his cheeky miscalculation which resulted in a PB for Briggsy
  • Jody reveals his "blind training run" strategy for getting Libby's mileage up on his final long run before the Brighton Half Marathon
  • Jody also reveals his one and only snowboarding experience and why he's unlikely to do it again
  • Why Jody's training in the last few weeks has been horrific (even though his body reckons everything's ok)
  • Where you need to be on your marathon plan for London Marathon, Brighton Marathon or any of the spring marathons
  • Book recommendation: How Not To Die
  • Why making your own milk is a total disaster (as per Scott Jurek's suggestions)
  • Jody's scathing review of How To Get Fit on ITV (he lasted until the cycling segment)

Again no Silk Cut on this episode... it's just BBR chat!

27 Jan 2017Ep 72 - The final Tough Guy and marathon training01:43:49

Send us a text

The main themes for this podcast are the last ever Tough Guy and advice for this stage of training for spring marathons.

When we say themes, we use it in the loosest possible sense as EVERYTHING is discussed.

Special Forces Hell Week is back on so that requires a brief analysis, we discover that David hates Seinfeld, and, rather generously, the guys spend about 20 minutes plugging other podcasts.

When they get around to discussing marathon training, they are actually quite helpful. What is the Maffetone method? What should you be eating? How many miles should you be logging before that upcoming spring marathon? Rules are debunked and approved in this genuinely quite useful episode.

Enjoy!

10 Jun 2016Ep 53 - Beer Lovers' Marathon01:20:46

Send us a text

Welcome back Do-badders! This week’s episode is an array of things but the main point for discussion will be the Beer Lovers' Marathon.

The guys start by calling for ideas for an innovative new theme song. Things then move on to talk of a t-shirt update, a request for race calendar suggestions, and David's rather short list of 'sponsors'.

The rest of the Podcast obviously includes vivid descriptions of the Beer Lovers' Marathon highlights such as David's unusually slow race time and over-indulgence (if there is such a thing) of Belgian's finest brews.

31 Jul 2020Ep 225 - Biohacking for athletic performance with Ben Greenfield02:06:26

Send us a text

Ben Greenfield has become one of the leading voices in the movement to reach the peak performance in body and brain.

A former bodybuilder and Spartan athlete, Ben is now an established expert and coach with a huge global audience of followers who look to his in-depth advice for guidance. So kind of like the opposite of BBR.

He's also author of the New York Times bestselling book, “Beyond Training: Mastering Endurance, Health and Life”.

Oh, and of course he has his own podcast Ben Greenfield Fitness, again which is the antithesis of everything BBR - professional, organised and knowledgeable.

In this episode, David grills Ben across a range of subjects and gets answers on how to improve the range of human performance both physically and mentally.

David explains his theory on the effect of celebrities on charity fundraising and the long-term damage of The Eddie Izzard Effect

This episode is INSANE!

In what we reckon is a world first (Bad Boy Guarantee), Jody and David speak to triple stroller marathon world record holder Cynthia Arnold.

Cynthia pushed her three children in a stroller (pushchair if you're British) around a whole marathon in an insanely fast time, smashing the previous world record.

It raised a lot of questions from the Do-Badders... and Cynthia answers them all.

11 Jan 2019Ep 146 - How to come dead last in a marathon with Lisa Jackson02:18:26

Send us a text

In this week's episode Jody and David talk to Lisa Jackson, author, runner and member of The 100 Marathon Club - but most interestingly Lisa has made a name for herself around her ability to come last in a string of races.

The discussion focuses on just how hard it is to actually come last in a race - especially when there seems to be just as much competition for the coveted last place spot - and what it's like when you're back of the pack. The chat also turns to elitism and celebrating slower runners and how to make running more inclusive.

09 Aug 2017Ep 92 - Dale Clutterbuck on The Beer Mile01:38:12

Send us a text

There's little the guys love more than talking about beer. Ok, probably drinking beer... but that doesn't exactly make a great podcast episode.

In this episode, Jody and David talk to British 1500m athlete Dale Clutterbuck who is looking to improve on his European Beer Mile record for the Beer Mile... but taking on the very best again in the Beer Mile World Champs shortly.

Dale reveals all about correct beer chugging technique and the pitfalls of training for such an auspicious event. He also reveals what life was like at St Mary's, tells tales of a bust-up on the track and gives his uncensored opinion on the state of athletics.

Also in this episode, Jody and David carry on the drinking theme by getting all nostalgic about the awful stuff they drank as teenagers... It's a pretty alcoholic and often nonsensical episode. Just the same as usual then...

31 May 2019Ep 167 - Stephanie Case on training for ultras in extreme conditions02:33:22

Send us a text

Training for ultras is hard. All those long runs and hours spent on trails trying to build endurance and maintain your conditioning.

Now imagine having to do that in a war zone.

Instead of miles of trails you can run on, you have to train by running a km loop around a dusty compound in searing heat. Or you only have access to a treadmill in a dark, lonely gym. Or a small underground car park.

Well, if that sounds grim just wait until you hear what Stephanie Case has to do to get ready for her crazy ultras. A veteran of some of the world's most infamous ultras including the Tour des Geants and Barkley Marathons.

As a human rights lawyer for the UN, Stephanie has to do all her training in the most restrictive conditions, having been based in flash points such as Gaza and Afghanistan.

In this episode, Jody and David speak to Stephanie about how she trains for her races in such conditions and discuss the impact of her Free To Run charity, which uses the power of running to help women and girls to overcome the harmful effects of conflict and discrimination.

And it is CRAZY, what she's managed to achieve. Well worth a listen.

Enjoy!

  • The lure of the Spartathlon and why it's just so tough
  • The No.1 nutrition mistake Dean made before and DURING the Spartathlon

  • How his book inspired a world crawling record
  • The change-up in his routine that's made him stronger
  • Dean reveals his ball park total career mileage (it's ridiculous)

... during which David won the Somaliland International Marathon.

Among the topics up for discussion on this episode are:

  • David's uber-romantic Valentine's Day gift for Briggsy

  • ... and why David may need surgery to wear his pair

  • How David ended up going to Somaliland
  • What it's like Hashing in Ethiopia
  • Where David got his Poundland Bad Boy Running vest from
  • David's race strategy for the Somaliland Marathon (or how he reeled them in one-by-one)
  • The incredible winning trophy and goodies David received
  • What it's like to be a celebrity in Somaliland (at least among taxi drivers)
  • Why David now feels equipped to taunt Mo Farah
  • Jody and David shower praise on Lee Stuart-Evans's successful attempt at the 10,000 Calorie Challenge... and challenge the Do-Badders to come up with some more challenges for Lee

30 Oct 2020Ep 237 - How to run marathons with no training with Fin Hampton01:53:31

Send us a text

We're told to prepare for a marathon you need at least 16 weeks of training.

But what if someone showed up at your door and made your run a marathon right now?

Would you?

You could... but would you? Really?

In this episode, Jody and David speak to Fin Hampton who's making a name for himself by doing exactly that - challenging people to run a marathon with him when he rocks up at their front door.

It's an interesting thought-  how much training do we *actually* need? - and the chaps take it to a ridiculous level.

WARNING - do not listen to ANY of their training advice from this episode. Not that you would normally. But ESPECIALLY don't in this episode.

12 Apr 2018Ep 117 - Rhalou Allerhand on bizarre races and online journalism02:36:05

Send us a text

The guys speak with former Running Bug head of content Rhalou Allerhand (at the time of the podcast. Rhalou's now back at Runner's World) about running journalism, what people want to read about and some weird races you not have heard of.

When we say this episode is surprising, we REALLY mean it.

Right away the conversation takes a turn Jody and David never expected and never recovers (fortunately). This is proper Do-Badder territory.

In this episode discover:

  • The origins of a naked race through a zoo (and the right outfit to wear. Oddly...)
  • How Rhalou ended up in the world of running journalism via a very surprising route (and how that's affected what she's covered)
  • Exactly what online readers want to read about (this will surprise you)
  • Why you need a baby goat to succeed in online journalism
  • The crazy races Rhalou has participated in (and why you may want to avoid them)
  • Why you should never accept the advances of old ladies wandering around forests
  • Why being good at running isn't a prerequisite for writing great content
  • How to stay enthusiastic about the subject you're writing about (i.e. how to keep falling in love with running over and over again)

The Silk Cut is at 36 mins if you want to avoid hearing Jody make a very, very damaging admission involving cycling...

03 Jul 2017Ep 90 - The Hashing Episode with Philip Ralph, aka "Sweetheart"01:20:22

Send us a text

Finally! It's the hashing episode... with special guest Sweetheart, aka Philip Ralph (if you're wondering why he has a nickname all is explained).

Hash House Harriers are all over the world (self-styled as "drinking clubs with a running problem") and drinking is a BIG part of the draw. As a long time hasher David (aka Princess) tries to explain to Jody (aka Jody) the appeal of hashing and brings in his pal Philip (aka Sweetheart) to explain all.

The guys talk about the origins of hashing, what actually happens on a hash and whether Jody would be an absolutely idiot to attempt to come hashing and risk being given a hideously offensive nickname.

Jody remains wholly skeptical of the whole thing throughout, while "Princess" and "Sweetheart" try to convince him of the fun communal aspect of hashing.

10 Jul 2020Ep 222 - Cam Wurf on gunning to be Ironman Champion02:26:19

Send us a text

Cameron Wurf is that annoying kid at school who was naturally amazing at every sport he played.

You know the one.

He can literally pick a sport and be amazing at it.

The Aussie was first a national champion and Olympic level rower, then jumped over to cycling before moving to Team Ineos where he has his the Ironman World Champs as his target.

Just a matter of fact, he trains with some of the world's greatest athletes including Chris Froome and Eliud Kipchoge.

And, you know what's even better - Cam is a really great guy and spills the bean on his experience in all disciplines on this episode.

(Jody's best bit is when Cam tells the truth about cyclists...)

03 Mar 2017Ep 77 - Colin McCourt on losing weight and hitting a sub-16 5k01:59:26

Send us a text

Today the guys talk to Colin McCourt, a former pro-athlete who is documenting his transformation back into shape. His friends have all bet him £100 that he can't do a sub-16 minute 5k by the end of this year. If he wins, that's a nice windfall, if he loses, he has to get seventeen first and second names tattooed on his body.

David and Jody start off with the basic questions about how's training going, whether it's realistic, before, in classic Do-Badder style, they veer off course and end up talking up about how social media could be used by those who are of a higher profile to bring more attention to the sport.

26 Apr 2019Ep 162 - Nike's new Vaporfly NEXT%: an inside look01:47:24

Send us a text

Warning - this episode is a full shoe geek out, thanks to David's exclusive interview with Brett Holt, vice president of Nike Running Footwear.

David was at the high profile launch of Nike's follow-up racing shoe and speaks to Brett about exactly what is different and why the changes were made.

Here's what you'll hear:

  • The exact feedback Elliot Kipchoge gave Nike that led to the changes
  • How the issues with the last version of the shoe have been addressed
  • Why the shoe is priced at an eye-watering £239
  • And why, unless you're quick, you're not going to be getting your hands on this shoe... and it's all part of Nike's plan

Before the interview, David is joined by Allie for general BBR chit chat shenans and then after the interview is joined by Jody to break down what was said. Yes, it is confusing but roll with it, ok?

Oh, and don't forget to leave a confusing 5 star review on the Cultra podcast iTunes review page mentioning BBR. Remember, they're obliged to read out every single five star review... so make it weird.

Enjoy!

30 Oct 2017Ep 98 - OCR World Championships Chat01:19:57

Send us a text

David has been to film (but not partake in) the OCR World Championships. They offer their opinions and it would appear that David's elitism has begun to deteriorate.

Jody talks about why it's hard to compare Ultra Running with OCR and has an idea to discuss at the end about a possible BBR spin off.

06 Jan 2017Ep 70 - Myanmar Marathon and Brewdog01:43:53

Send us a text

This episode begins with the discussion of a saga that unfolded on the Facebook group. After an unnoticeable seg, they move on to the Inaugural BBR Brewdog Half-Marathon which Jody was involved in.

David then takes us through what he's been up to; from his Pato filled presentation at the MdS Expo in London, to his abuse (and slight faux pas) at the darts, to his marathoning success.

There's another call for ideas for the 12 labours of Josh Stephens and these can be submitted over any of the following formats:

Enjoy!

15 Mar 2019Ep 156 - James Poole on the Hong Kong Four Trails Ultra02:17:58

Send us a text

If there's a big name ultra, James Poole has most likely done it.

In this episode, Jody and David speak to James about his many races and, specifically, the epic Hong Kong Four Trails Ultra which kind of looks insane (the race had been run by the time of publication... but we won't tell you what happened).

James is also founder of the Advent Running running community and shares his experience running this.

He also shares some crazy stories from his many adventures including The Ultra Gobi and a brilliant story about hallucinations.

Oh AND...

COMPETITION TIME!

WIN A TRAIL RUNNING HOLIDAY FOR TWO!

Seriously, we're not kidding.

Listen out in this episode right from the start for the instructions to win a holiday for two trail running in Spain.

Imagine that? Running when it's not tipping it down.

Go to the BBR Facebook page for more details or join the FB group.
