17 Dec 2018 | Declan Bennett (Striking 12, Rent, Once) | 00:35:45
Declan Bennett is currently starring in Striking 12 at the Union Theatre in Southwark. Since 2000 he’s been seen in shows including Taboo, Rent, American Idiot, Once and Jesus Christ Superstar, as well as having a stint in BBC’s EastEnders. In this interview he spoke for the first time about leaving the UK tour Taboo after a cancer diagnosis led to panic attacks on stage. He quit the business for two years until, after getting the all clear, an audition for Avenue Q led to a nine month U.S. tour of Rent, in which he played Roger. Having spent a few years working in New York, Declan came home to star in Once where he was eventually noticed by the producers of EastEnders who offered him the part of Charlie Cotton. In 2016, he starred as Jesus in the Olivier award winning production of Jesus Christ Superstar at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre - a role he reprised in the same production a year later. Now he’s working on more of his own material that might soon be seen on stage. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/backstagewith. Hosted on Acast. 06 Sep 2018 | Rebecca Trehearn (Sweet Charity, Ghost, Show Boat) | 00:20:32
Rebecca Trehearn has one of the most beautifully unique voices in British musical theatre. A wealth of credits to her name, she won the Olivier for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical in 2017 for Showboat. Rebecca’s currently starring in Sweet Charity at Nottingham Playhouse. She kindly took some time out of her busy rehearsals last month to have a chat with me about all the shows she’s been in, and the ones still on her to-do list. I first saw Rebecca as a lead in Ghost in 2012 when she covered the role of Molly in the West End (a role she later played in her own right on tour). She told me how that show helped her through her own grief of losing a loved one. You can see Rebecca in Sweet Charity at Nottingham Playhouse until 22nd September 2018. 23 Jul 2019 | Ricardo Afonso (Jesus Christ Superstar, We Will Rock You, Top Hat) | 00:29:26
Ricardo Afonso is currently playing Judas Iscariot in Jesus Christ Superstar, a reincarnation of the 2016 Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre production at the Barbican. The show had a second run at Regent’s Park in 2017 after it won the Olivier Award for best musical revival, played Chicago in 2018, and will tour the US later this year. The show, which was originally written as a rock opera album, is about the days leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. This particular production has received rave reviews each year it’s run in London. Apart from the fact this version is playing at an indoor venue, the only real difference is the casting, including the actors playing Jesus and Judas who are both new to the show. Ricardo was actually offered the part in 2016 but had to pull out of the production for health reasons. He moved home to Portugal for three years before coming back to London earlier this year to finally play the part he has longed for his whole career. Many of the reviews of this year’s run have singled Ricardo out as the ‘absolute standout’ and ‘vocal master’, with ‘soaring vocals’ making him ‘the star of the show’. We met up at the Barbican one lunchtime, shortly before a midweek matinee. Ricardo filled me in on what happened in 2016, why he had to move his family to Portugal while he recovered and how much he hoped this production would come back and give him another chance to play Judas. No stranger to the West End, you may also have seen Ricardo as Galileo in We Will Rock You, Top Hat and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. 25 Jun 2018 | Gina Beck (Matilda, Wicked, Les Misérables) | 00:23:07
Gina Beck is one of British musical theatre’s best known sopranos. She played Cosette in the 21st Anniversary cast of Les Miserables, did two years as Christine in Phantom of the Opera, played Glinda in Wicked for two years in London before joining the US Tour and is now playing Miss Honey in Matilda - a part she auditioned for just six weeks after having a baby. Gina said she was worried she wouldn’t have any fun stories to tell but, as you’ll hear, that just isn’t true. There’s the time a wigs mistress was sent on a quest for eyelash glue for Patti LuPone and the dinner with Andrew Lloyd Webber where she was too scared to eat anything in case he asked her a question. 03 Oct 2018 | Rebecca Lock (Heathers, Mary Poppins, Avenue Q) | 00:28:21
Rebecca Lock is one of my absolute favourite actors. She is currently stealing the show in Heathers at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in the West End. A show she’s been with since its first London workshop in 2017, through its run at The Other Palace earlier this year before its transfer. Among her credits are both the title role and Mrs Banks in Mary Poppins (not at the same time), Kate Monster and Lucy the Slut in Avenue Q (at the same time), Carlotta in Phantom of the Opera and Bertrande in Martin Guerre. In this episode we talked about working with Carrie Hope Fletcher, how the devoted Heathers fans go to an incredible effort to dress up as their favourite characters, and how she picks her Steve every night (if you know, you know). You can see Rebecca as Ms Fleming in Heathers until 3rd November 2018. The show continues at the Theatre Royal Haymarket until 24th November. Whose Mind is it Anyway? is a theatrical experience combining hypnosis, improv and movie musicals. My guests this week are the creators of the show, Michelle and Simon. They’ve taken the show to the Edinburgh Festival where it’s running at Gilded Balloon’s Patter Hoose. We recorded this episode in Michelle’s voiceover booth, which was extremely cosy, on one of the hottest days of the year so far. Click here for tickets to the show. 06 Nov 2019 | Melissa Jacques (Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, Mamma Mia!, Wicked) | 00:31:50
It’s 25 years since Melissa Jacques left Sheffield to pursue her musical theatre dreams in London. A year-long course at the London School of Musical Theatre led her to summer seasons, pantomimes and rep work where she cut her teeth before she joined the original cast of Mamma Mia. That’s where Melissa says she grew up and really learned her trade. This autumn she was promoted to the role of Margaret, one of the roles she previously understudied, in Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, after joining the show as a standby last summer. Rachael Wooding is currently on the road in the UK tour of Fat Friends the musical. Her extensive CV lists shows like We Will Rock You, which she did twice, Hairspray and the title role in Evita. Michael James Scott is in London to play the Genie in Aladdin over the summer. Trevor Dion Nicholas has gone home to Pittsburgh to play his hometown on the US tour so he and Michael have swapped for a short run. Michael has incredible stories of being taught by old school Broadway stars including Ben Vereen, Julie Andrews and Gwen Verdon as well as working in shows such as Tarzan, Hair and The Book of Mormon. He’s very excited to go for afternoon tea in London - something he discovered when he was over here with the Broadway cast of Hair in 2010. 13 May 2019 | Clive Carter (Come From Away, Les Misérables, Phantom of the Opera) | 00:39:28
Clive Carter is one of the Olivier award nominated stars of Come From Away. He was in the original cast of Les Miserables at the Barbican, created the role of Raoul in Phantom of the Opera (while it was in development at Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sydmonton estate), and he was part of the original West End cast of Into the Woods. Clive has been working as an actor since 1975 and is one of a handful of actors who has seamlessly switched between Shakespearean plays to big budget musicals. Come From Away is about what happened when the US airspace was closed on 9/11. 38 planes were forced to land at Gander airport on a Canadian island called Newfoundland. The 7,000 people from those planes were taken in and looked after by the people of Gander and nearby towns for five days before the planes were allowed to take off again. I’ve done a few episodes on the show before when I’ve been able to have a quick chat with Clive but I really wanted to have a proper conversation with him to talk about his career in more detail. 05 Dec 2017 | Jodie Prenger (Fat Friends, Oliver!, Spamalot) | 00:15:48
I don’t think I have ever laughed as much in an interview as I did while chatting to Jodie Prenger. She is undoubtedly one of the nicest people in showbiz. Jodie won the role of Nancy in the 2008 programme I’d Do Anything. She’s since taken on roles in Spamalot, One Man Two Guv’nors and Calamity Jane. She’s currently starring in Fat Friends - a new musical by Kay Mellor and Nick Lloyd Webber (you might have heard of his father…). She talked about her pre-show rituals, how she learned to cope with Wickedmania, and her 20 years in musical theatre. Dianne also showed me the vintage bed-come-sofa she inherited from Lily James which now has Matthew Horne’s gold bedspread on it. It sounds odd but it suits her character in this show perfectly. 27 Oct 2020 | Kiruna Stamell (Cyrano de Bergerac, Great Britain, Moulin Rouge!) | 00:59:14
Kiruna Stamell was working as an extra on the film Moulin Rouge in Australia twenty years ago when the director created the part of La Petite Princess just for her. She used her pay check to come to the UK where she’s worked across television, film and theatre. At the start of this year she was in the Jamie Lloyd Company production of Cyrano de Bergerac at the Playhouse Theatre in the West End, which won the Olivier award for Best Revival at the weekend. She was meant to be part of the show’s New York transfer but it was cancelled because of the pandemic. Instead, she found herself shielding at home in the UK with her husband Gareth, and creating a web series for children called Pirate and Parrot. Follow Kiruna on Twitter and Instagram. 13 Aug 2018 | Alice Fearn (Wicked, Into the Woods, Shrek) | 00:32:37
Alice Fearn has just begun her second year as Elphaba in the West End production of Wicked. She joined the show as Standby Elphaba in the 10th Anniversary cast in 2016. I went to meet Alice at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in London on the last day of the heatwave so her dressing room was sweltering. She had about five fans on and a couple of air con units so we just about survived. Alice grew up in Cumbria and has appeared in shows including Into the Woods, Shrek the musical and Annie Get Your Gun. She’s recently talked about understudies getting more credit when they step in to cover leading roles - something we discussed at length. 26 Feb 2019 | Susan Harrison (Showstopper! The Improvised Musical) | 00:25:09
Susan Harrison has been with The Showstoppers for about seven years now. Showstopper! The Improvised Musical is on at The Other Palace at the moment but also at the Lyric Theatre in the West End one Monday a month. Last month it celebrated its 1000th show. The show is different every night. The audience make suggestions for the setting and the cast take it from there. It works so well and I really can’t recommend it enough. Susan and I met at the Museum of Comedy in London, which is in Bloomsbury, underground, below a church. While we were there I tried and failed to describe that it reminded me of The Court of Miracles from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Of course as soon as I left I remembered what it was called. Showstopper! The Improvised Musical is running at The Other Palace until 16th March. Susan also has a comedy podcast you can listen to called Hayley and Ruth: Two Stars. 28 Mar 2019 | The Real Newfoundlanders and Plane People of Come From Away | 00:31:37
In this episode we meet some of the people whose stories are told in the musical Come From Away which opened last month at the Phoenix Theatre in the West End. If you aren’t familiar with the show, it’s about what happened when the US airspace was closed on 9/11. 38 planes were forced to land at Gander airport on a Canadian island called Newfoundland. The 7,000 people from those planes were taken in and looked after by the people of Gander and nearby towns for five days before the planes were allowed to take off again. I was recently invited to go and have a chat with some of the Newfoundlanders and some of the plane people who were stranded there at the time. They’d come to London see the show and meet the actors playing them. And for one afternoon they all got together on the top floor of Canada House, overlooking Trafalgar Square, where once again, they told their versions of what happened on the north east tip of north America in September 2001.
