26 May 2021Ep. 127: What in the world happened to the Cardinals defense???00:26:49

Brenden Schaeffer discusses a bizarre game in which numerous errors and misplays cost Jack Flaherty any legitimate chance at his ninth straight win. The offense didn't really help out the cause very much either, continuing a trend of leaving runners on base in an 8-3 loss to the ChiSox Tuesday.

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the match-up between the Cards and Phillies coming up this Friday and responds to the notion that he is pessimistic about the matchup for STL. Is it true? And how is Ryan Helsley after Tuesday's injury scare?

07 Feb 2025Ep. 713: THIS IS NOT A DRILL! The Cardinals made a trade!00:27:42

While it's not the trade everybody has been anticipating all winter, the Cardinals did get on the board with an actual trade for a player that was added to the 40-man roster on Thursday, as St. Louis acquired utility man Michael Helman from the Twins.

What are the implications of this trade, why did the Cardinals feel the need to make it, and what do we make of Michael Helman and his potential role on the team in 2025? Could Jose Fermin and Thomas Saggese be impacted by the acquisition?

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the report that the Cardinals are expected to get with Paul Goldschmidt on contract extension talks before the 2024 season. Is this is right time for the Cardinals to extend Goldy following a down year for him and the team in 2023?

What would be reasonable extension terms for you as a Cards fan to see to ensure the Cardinals lock up Goldy for the rest of his career in St. Louis?

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the massive Juan Soto contract with the Mets and how it might cause the runner-ups in the Soto market to pivot toward a trade with the Cardinals for Nolan Arenado. Plus, does a deal for the Phillies with a free-agent reliever throw cold water on the possibility of the Cardinals trading Ryan Helsley this winter? Jack Flaherty? Alex Reyes? Wednesday in Jupiter brought (some) answers about the health statuses of key Cardinals pitchers. There's still more to learn, but Brenden Schaeffer updates you on the latest and discusses Steven Matz's first live batting practice as a Cardinal. Matz vs. Arenado? You betcha!

28 Apr 2024BONUS VIDEO: The One Key Stat That Led To A Cardinals Loss Sunday In New York00:21:24

Brenden Schaeffer hops on to discuss the Cardinals 4-2 loss to the Mets in 11 innings on Sunday, April 28, 2024.

In a preview of the topics that will be discussed on B-Schaeff Daily later Sunday night, we get into several topics including the performance of the bullpen Sunday -- which was actually exceptional despite the way the game ended -- as well as the REAL reason the Cardinals lost this game.

Heck, it had more to do with something that happened Saturday than anything to do with the relievers who threw today. But more than anything, there was one key stat from Sunday's game that painted the picture.

25 Aug 2022Ep. 278: Talk about a quick trigger! Arenado gets run early, Cards can't overcome it in quiet night offensively at Wrigley00:37:21

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals Wednesday night loss to the Cubs at Wrigley as Nolan Arenado was ejected in the third inning by John Libka after a questionable check swing call. I give my thoughts on that play and we hear from Oli Marmol on his. Plus more talk about Noot, platoon splits and how the best Cardinals' linuep against RHP might feature Corey Dickerson at this point...

21 Apr 2025Ep. 760: Cardinals Get Swept By Mets, Ryan Fernandez Struggles Reach Fever Pitch00:37:12

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the St. Louis Cardinals 7-4 loss to the Mets on Sunday, capping a series sweep for New York as the Cardinals fall to a pitiful 1-9 record in road games this season.

The trio of Lindor, Soto, and Alonso combined to drive in more runs in this series than the entire Cardinals team scored.

Ryan Fernandez's recent struggles reached a new level on Sunday as we're left with more questions than answers about the state of the Cardinals after a series like this one.

Andy and Brenden of the KTGR Big Show discuss the disappointing series split that the Cardinals had against the Rockies over the weekend at Busch Stadium.

04 Jul 2024Ep. 607: Bullpen Blues -- Cardinals Lose In Extras As Kittredge And Romero Can't Hold Late Lead00:41:00

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals 5-4 loss in 10 innings to the Pirates on July 3, 2024.

Mikolas had a solid start. Contreras had a key homer. But the bullpen had some warts as Giovanny Gallegos gave up a home run to Rowdy Tellez that proved costly in the outcome of the game.

Once the Cards got a lead in the 10th, Kittredge and Romero weren't able to hold it there, as the Pirates walked off on the Cardinals.

Should Helsley or Ryan Fernandez been used in this game by Oli Marmol? Well, the manager said neither were available. Is that a source of frustration for fans who wanted Oli to manage the 'pen differently Wednesday?

10 Aug 2023Ep. 446: Should the Cardinals have long-term concern over Tyler O'Neill's durability after his latest nagging injury?00:37:53

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the strange circumstances for Tyler O'Neill over the past couple of days after he was scratched again from the lineup Wednesday as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Rays 6-4.

O'Neill has been dealing with knee tightness, and it seems the Tropicana Field turf is central to his concern. Is this an injury O'Neill should be playing through in order to demonstrate his reliability ad durability to the Cardinals? Or does it make the most sense to hold O'Neill back until he's mentally convinced he can give it 100% on the field?

This chicken or egg debate requires some nuance, but it's worth having the discussion because the Cardinals are going to have to make a decision about O'Neill one way or another before constructing their lineup for 2024.

17 Aug 2021Ep. 173: Cards sweep Royals, closing in on Padres in wild card picture00:30:47

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals' sweep of KC and where it puts them in the context of the season at-large. We also look ahead to the pivotal Brewers series upcoming.

15 Jan 2025Ep. 706: Ready to feel old? Cardinals just signed the son of a recent Cubs pitcher!00:16:07

Plus some chatter about the upcoming weekend with Winter Warm-Up, Cardinals Caravan and the Baseball Writers Dinner in STL!

26 Apr 2024Could This Version Of A Cardinals Rebuild In 2025 Make Sense — And Actually Be Kinda Fun?01:05:39

Brenden Schaeffer and Josh Jacobs (Dealin' The Cards podcast) sit down to discuss a really interesting hypothetical.

Could the Cardinals institute a mini-rebuild—perhaps more accurately, a retool—of not only the MLB roster but possibly the entire structure of the organization if 2024 doesn't live up to the hopes of ultimately fielding a contender in St. Louis? And if so, what exactly might that process look like?

The boys were surprised to see how much fun the hypothetical pared-down version of the 2025 St. Louis Cardinals could actually be on paper, even after factoring in significant departures from the current team. With a reduced payroll, could a small step back be exactly the step forward the Cardinals need in the long run if they aren't able to right the ship this season?

We discuss just about every relevant name searching for guys who could make sense for a thought experiment in which John Mozeliak steps out of the limelight. Could Chaim Bloom be prominently featured? The boys discuss various reasons why that could conceivably be the case.

16 Feb 2023Ep. 328: Willson Contreras showing his edge in Cardinals camp... by throwing shade at the Cubs? PLUS some great Oli Marmol insight00:32:26

Brenden Schaeffer breaks down Wednesday from Cardinals camp as Willson Contreras is the talk of the town for good reason. Plus Oli Marmol on the benefits of having Ozzie Smith being back in camp in a post-COVID restrictions world. How important is his presence for young guys like Masyn Winn?

09 Aug 2021Ep. 168: Recapping Cardinals series win over Royals, Kwang Hyun Kim injury news00:21:57

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals taking two of three from the Royals. STL will need more sweeps in its future if it's going to mount a charge in the Central. Also, we touch on the KK news as Kim hits the injured list with elbow inflammation Monday.

20 May 2022Ep. 213: It's Time! Cardinals promoting Gorman and Liberatore for weekend in Pittsburgh00:39:39

Brenden Schaeffer breaks down the Cardinals' series loss to the Mets and dives into how that series triggered the team's decision to promote two of their top prospects to the big-league club.

26 Apr 2021Ep. 109: How sweep it is, as the Cards topple the Reds00:36:55

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals' series sweep of the Reds as Tyler O'Neill goes bonkers and Jack Flaherty continues to progress toward his peak form. (Also, I teased a discussion of David Bell and the HBP situation and then never got to it. We'll dip back into that discussion Monday.)

26 Jun 2023Ep. 410: London Series ends in a split for Cardinals -- Are you encouraged or concerned about the result?00:48:33

Brenden Schaeffer returns to the podcast to break down the results of the London Series between the Cardinals and the Cubs. Despite earning a split in the short series, do Cardinals fans have more uneasiness about the team than they did before the Redbirds ever took flight to Europe? Or are there signs to be encouraged by after Sunday's come-from-behind effort?

Plus, the vitriol that Adam Wainwright is receiving seems to have reached new heights from Cardinals fans.

28 Jun 2022Ep. 231: The Ballad of James Naile and the Neon French Fries00:42:51

Brenden Schaeffer breaks down an eventful day at Busch as the Cardinals drubbed the Marlins with big outings by Goldy and Yepez--they both went yard off a french fry facade. Waino was Waino, and the guy who relieved him in the eighth was a lifelong Cardinals fan making his MLB debut. Also, Mozeliak with a media misstep when discussing the Jack Flaherty injury? Lots to get to on today's episode.

07 Nov 2024Ep. 683: The Cardinals officially have a new TV deal! And there's going to be an app, too!00:25:31

The Cardinals announced Thursday that they have a new agreement on a multi-year TV deal with FanDuel Sports Network, which is the entity formerly known as Bally Sports.

In a good update for fans who want to watch the games, you will now be able to purchase an app to do so if you live in the Cardinals TV market. That means you will have another option besides an expensive cable subscription.

Brenden Schaeffer discusses what this means for fans, what it means for the Cardinals payroll and revenues. The details we know, the details we don't yet know, and some informed speculation on exactly what might be coming next as a result of this news.

27 Jun 2024Ep. 601: Libby!! Dude, Yes! Just Do That Every Time! Cards Split The Doubleheader00:48:37

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the doubleheader split by the Cardinals against the Braves on Wednesday.

We get into the sadness associated with game one, but only barely, as the masterful performance of Matthew Liberatore seized the day and the conversation in the nightcap.

Exceeding any expectation for his pitch count limit, Libby dominated for six innings of scoreless ball, striking out eight and earning a spot that Oli Marmol extended to him in the sixth that the data said was absolutely the wrong matchup.

But it was a growth experience for Libby. The question is, what do the Cardinals do about it moving forward? And what SHOULD they do about it moving forward?

04 Aug 2023Ep. 440: Another HUGE Night For Masyn Winn -- When Will He Get The Call To The St. Louis Cardinals?00:52:35

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the St. Louis Cardinals' 5-3 loss to the Twins from Thursday, August 3, 2023. Matthew Liberatore continued to struggle as the Cardinals keep waiting for him to take command of a rotation spot.

Alec Burleson was a bright spot, however -- How much consideration should he earn from the club when it comes to playing time the rest of the way? Plus, Brenden stumps for a Memphis Redbird to get a call-up to the big leagues -- and he's not talking about Masyn Winn.

We do, however, dive into the situation for the Cardinals' top prospect after the shortstop went 4-for-5 for the Triple-A squad on Thursday night. Why isn't Winn in St. Louis and how long will it be before he gets there? All covered before tonight's episode concludes.

Timestamps:

To open the show: Libby struggles -- How far does prospect pedigree take you? A general discussion on how the Cardinals should view the number of outside additions necessary to field a good starting rotation in 2024.

22:43 - Alec Burleson -- With his recent hot streak, is this a guy Cardinals fans wrote off too early? And is he one the team would ultimately regret trading?

31:45 - Brenden starts pounding the drum for a call-up from Triple-A--but it’s not the one you think it is

39:20 - Masyn Winn -- After a four-hit night at Memphis, why is he not in St. Louis yet, and when can you expect him to get there?

18 Jun 2022Ep. 224: McFarland fumbles the bag to minimize Cardinals' late rally before it even happened00:43:36

The Cardinals tried to come back in the ninth inning on Friday at Boston, but the rally fell short as the bullpen left them just too big a hill to climb. Brenden Schaeffer discusses TJ McFarland's role in that--and Oli Marmol's role in selecting him for the ill-fated opportunity in the seventh inning. We also discuss Yadi heading to the IL with knee soreness.

06 Jul 2023Ep. 414: The Cardinals hit rock bottom--and proceeded to pick up a shovel01:26:59

Brenden Schaeffer discusses a 10-9 Cardinals' loss as Jordan Hicks quite literally throws the game away down the right field line, wasting what would have otherwise been the most emphatic home run of the season for St. Louis. What happens next? I don't know either, so we just let everyone vent about it with me as the reluctant tour guide.

17 Feb 2023Ep. 329: Arbitration hearing gone wrong for Corbin Burnes? What about Helsley? PLUS Waino's mentorship of two young pitching prospects at Cardinals camp00:36:23

Brenden Schaeffer breaks down the Corbin Burnes situation turning UGLY with the Brewers after his arb hearing. Ryan Helsley also lost his hearing with the Cardinals, so we discuss that situation as well as how Oli Marmol set up two young pitchers to be mentored by Adam Wainwright on Wednesday.

17 Apr 2024Ep. 538: Lance Lynn Does It Again! Cardinal Bats Are Still Sleepy, But Pitching + Defense Beats A's Again01:10:54

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals' 3-2 win over the Athletics on Tuesday night, April 16, 2024.

Following up Sonny Gray's electric outing from Monday, Lance Lynn guided the Cardinals through seven strong innings before the bullpen slammed the door.

Ryan Helsley has pitched in every win so far this year for STL! It's a good thing, too, that St. Louis got the effort that it did from its pitchers -- because, yeah, the offense is still looking a little sluggish. How worrying is Paul Goldschmidt's slow start? The Cardinals did seem to pay homage to Whitey Herzog by manufacturing a few runs with small ball. 04 Apr 2025Ep. 745: Five Players Who The Cardinals Should Approach For Contract Extensions TODAY00:47:10

In the spirit of recent contract extensions around Major League Baseball for up-and-coming players like Kristian Campbell and Jackson Merrill, Brenden Schaeffer discusses his top five contract extension candidates from the St. Louis Cardinals who the team should consider trying to sign on long-term deals.

The key with many of these players is their high floors, which makes them relatively safe bets when it comes to offering early extensions.

Will the Cardinals do it? Perhaps not, for several reasons that we discuss. But it wouldn't hurt to ask these five players whether they are interested in locking into a new deal!

15 Jun 2021Ep. 138: Cards win another Waino start as Waino's history with 'sticky stuff' comes to the forefront00:36:43

Brenden Schaeffer breaks down the Cardinals' 4-2 win over Miami on Monday before delving into the sticky substance topic as it pertains to Adam Wainwright following the SI article that emerged detailing his history with Bubba Harkins.

23 Jul 2021Ep. 156: A series win vs. the Cubs? A corner being turned?00:35:16

Brenden Schaeffer dives into the Cardinals win on Thursday, the one it took to claim the series over the Cubs. We also discuss how this might be a sign the Cards are beginning to turn the corner. Could more positive regression be in store for this club moving forward? Is it possible?!

09 Jul 2024Low Hanging Fruit, Ep. 19: Brenden & Charlie Are Back! Are The Cardinals Buyers & What Should They Buy???00:56:53

Brenden and Charlie are back with another episode of the acclaimed podcast Low Hanging Fruit to discuss the recent run that has put the Cardinals in a solid position to buy at the trade deadline.

Is it time for John Mozeliak to give into what a lot of fans would like to see -- and perhaps be a little selfish himself when it comes to making moves at this deadline?

22 Aug 2024Ep. 650: Okay, Cardinals Fans. You've Got To Admit... That Was Pretty Cool!00:38:34

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals win over the Brewers in emphatic walk-off fashion on Wednesday night at Busch, 10-6 on the strength of a Nolan Arenado walk-off grand slam.

Luken Baker was another hero of the game with his pinch blast. Who would have thought the big slugger could hit for power?

Gibby started strong but the bullpen had trouble, meaning multiple comebacks were necessary for the Redbirds. It's almost always never easy, but they got the W on Wednesday.

Now it's a question of what they're going to do with it -- build from it or let it fade into being a mere fond memory in a lost season.

10 Aug 2022Ep. 264: Uh, what the hell was that, Cardinals? 25 runs in two games for STL pitching--cause for concern?00:29:17

Brenden Schaeffer breaks down arguably the ugliest Cardinals loss of the year and searches for what we should be taking away from it, if anything. A discussion on the bullpen move that probably needs to be made this week, as well as a look at two underperforming spots in the STL lineup.

20 Apr 2025Ep. 759: Lights Out For Libby, But... Where Are The Cardinals Bats?!00:36:48

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the St. Louis Cardinals shutout loss to the New York Mets on Saturday at Citi Field as Kodai Senga carved up a Cardinal lineup that is suddenly looking extremely pedestrian over the past couple of weeks.

The season-long numbers don't yet fully reflect just how quiet the St. Louis lineup has become. What gives, here? Tough pitching or something more sinister about the Cardinals?

Masyn Winn homered twice in Memphis on Saturday, so he's closing in on a return from the injured list.

What should happen to Thomas Saggese, one of the very few Cardinals swinging a solid bat lately, when Winn returns from the IL? Brenden lists some names he would see demoted to AAA instead of Saggese.

29 May 2024Ep. 574: Nado, Bang! Arenado Finds Power Stroke, Gibby Deals, Cardinals Win!00:33:52

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals 7-1 win over the Reds on Tuesday, May 28, 2024 as Nolan Arenado finds the power swing he has been so desperately seeking. Nolan Gorman goes yard after an ill-fated bunt try. And Kyle Gibson deals by bringing a no-hit bid into the sixth inning.

He wasn't the only pitcher in the Cardinals organization to flirt with a no-no Tuesday, either. We discuss that while also prepping expectations for Andre Pallante's start on Wednesday afternoon as the Cardinals have officially named him for the opportunity as the next-man-up to be the number five starter in the rotation.

08 Apr 2024Ep. 529: Sunday Was A Failed Start For Gibby — But Did He Also Still Do His Job?00:29:37

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals 10-3 loss to the Marlins from Sunday afternoon, April 7, 2024, at Busch Stadium.

Kyle Gibson failed the team by giving up six runs in the first inning and effectively taking them out of the game before it ever really began. But did he also, in a way, do the exact job that the Cardinals signed him to do on those inevitable days where you don't have your best stuff as a pitcher?

Gibby still got the team through six innings and saved the bullpen in a major way in the process. Do we give him some credit for fulfilling that notable role?

23 Jul 2024Ep. 622: Cardinals Bats Let Pallante Down, Plus Which Names Could Go In A Trade For Erick Fedde?00:57:46

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals 2-1 loss to the Pirates Monday at PNC Park as Andre Pallante once again is NOT performing as a number 5 starter -- he's been much better than that.

Six more innings of one-run baseball Monday should have granted Pallante a win against the Bucs, but the offense was dormant outside of a Nolan Gorman solo shot, so it didn't happen.

We also share the explanation for why the Cardinals and Oli Marmol went with John King instead of JoJo Romero to pitch the decisive eighth inning of the loss.

And who are some names that could conceivably be involved in a trade for Erick Fedde if the Cardinals decide to engage the White Sox for the veteran starter?

06 Jun 2024After 4-5 Road Trip, Cardinals MUST Dominate Easier Upcoming Schedule00:38:19

Andy and Brenden of the KTGR Big Show discuss the Cardinals' win over the Astros from Wednesday and take stock of the road trip at large as the Redbirds finished up with a 4-5 record in their trip to Cincy, Philly and Houston.

Are you satisfied by the result of the road trip? Or is it a merely "tolerable" result for the Cardinals as they seem to have weathered the storm of a difficult portion of the schedule.

Now, things are about to lighten up with some lesser teams on the docket in the days ahead. Can the Cardinals take advantage and make their move in June?

Plus, the White Sox have some interesting names potentially on the trade block. Would the Cardinals trade marquee prospects like Tink Hence or even Jordan Walker to swing a blockbuster with Chicago? SHOULD they even be willing to consider such a thing or is it a matter of blasphemy?

07 Jun 2024Ep. 583: "I pitched like s---." Sonny Gray at a loss to describe his fifth-inning collapse as Cardinals drop the opener to Rockies00:35:00

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals 3-2 loss to the Rockies from Thursday, June 6, 2024 at Busch Stadium.

Sonny Gray came apart at the seams in the fifth inning as he walked three batters with two wild pitches and a pair of stolen bases allowed. He was candid with his frustration after the game, but didn't offer a ton in the way of an explanation for why things went so wrong.

You'll hear from the Cards starter in this episode, and we'll talk through his outing as well as the struggles for his catcher Ivan Herrera in helping to limit the damage in that frustrating fifth inning. Herrera's management of the running game is becoming a glaring issue for St. Louis.

And of course, so is their un-timely offense as Thursday was another night where RISP was a real issue.

Brenden Schaeffer sets the tone for the week as the MLB off-season calendar heats up with the Rule 5 protection deadline on Tuesday and the non-tender deadline on Friday.

We start this episode with the good and pure intentions of discussing both deadlines, but we spend enough time on the Rule 5 stuff that we end up saving the bulk of the non-tender conversation for the next episode (stay tuned Monday night/Tuesday morning).

Who should the Cardinals consider protecting from their group of eligible minor leaguers? And do they have the comfort to clear as many spots as will be necessary to protect the players we bring up?
