18 Sep 20231 - Ginny Kochis and Twice Exceptional Children00:10:35

About Ginny:

Ginny Kochis is a twice-exceptional mom raising three twice-exceptional kids, ages 8, 12, and 16. The eldest is autistic; the younger two have been diagnosed with GAD/OCD/ADHD.  Her husband is also Twice Exceptional. Her nonfiction work is faith-based, and her fiction is secular. She is comfortable speaking from both perspectives: her work with neurodivergent families is not limited to those who ascribe to any particular faith. Her main goal is to provide support and encouragement for those who are neurodivergent, helping them navigate a world that is decidedly neurotypical in a manner that fits within their own personal boundaries and respects who they are.

In 2016, Ginny founded the Not So Formulaic community for women of faith raising differently-wired kids. This ministry is person-first, meaning she seeks to help families thrive in the way they were made: unique and unrepeatable. She has developed over a dozen books and resources for this community. On May 15, 2023, she published her first novel for young adults. Under her imprint, Zelie Press Fiction, she writes stories about love, faith, friendship, and family, starring neurodivergent characters.

29 Apr 202440 - Paul Zolman and the Role of Love00:32:00

Here's what to expect on the podcast:

  • And much more!

About Paul:

The author of love is God. In His wisdom, He placed us in a variety of circumstances that require us to find our way back to His pure love. So, what qualifies Paul Zolman to speak about love? His childhood experience of the opposite of love. From that austere beginning and the distaste it formed inside him, he searched for and eventually created a method that transformed his life from anger to loving everyone. Growing up in a family of abuse, physical touch became his preferred love style only because of the regularity.

He could almost count on it. It was consistent. He came to think that was the way to express love. But deep inside, he knew that was a twisted belief. He wanted a better life for himself, which is why he created a paradigm shift that works. In this book, you’ll find what helped Paul Zolman move from a childhood boot camp of abuse to being a person who loves everyone and can find good about anyone in any circumstance. This is truly the role of love.

Here's what to expect on the podcast:

  • How do parents with ADHD manage their own challenges while raising differently-wired kids?
  • Tips on enhancing executive functioning.
  • What resources and support are available for parents who are raising differently-wired kids?
  • Why do neurodivergent individuals use masking?
  • And much more!

Over the last 40-plus years, she has worked in schools and social service agencies before starting a full-time private practice 14 years ago.

She has focused on working with autistic and other neurodivergent individuals for most of her career. As her understanding of autism has changed, I have tried to stay current. This practice and my interest in trauma led me to specialize in the complex Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) profile.

18 Sep 20234 - Diane Gould and Learning to Regulate Yourself as a Parent00:10:29

About Diane:

In the 4th grade, Diane read a book about Jane Addams and decided to become a social worker. During her 20s, she attended the Jane Addams School of Social Work to pursue her master’s degree after obtaining an undergraduate in behavioral psychology. In addition to helping others, human behavior was always interesting to her. Since graduating college, she has focused her career on serving vulnerable children, adults, and struggling families.

She is the founder and director of PDA North America.

In this episode of the 'Every Brain is Different' podcast, Samantha Foote introduces listeners to the concept of curiosity questions as a positive discipline tool.

She explains how curiosity questions encourage children, particularly neurodivergent kids, to think critically, solve problems, and feel empowered rather than simply complying with direct instructions.

Samantha provides practical examples such as asking, 'What do we need to do before we go outside?' instead of giving direct orders. This approach helps children gain independence by fostering executive functioning skills and reducing power struggles.

She advises parents to use open-ended questions, maintain a neutral tone, and practice during low-stress moments to effectively implement this technique.
