11 May 2017From Coping to Thriving: How to Turn Self-Care Into a Way of Life00:57:48

The Mother’s Day Edition

Is self care selfish? Are you just barely coping and surviving or thriving in your motherhood?

“MOTHERHOOD is not for the faint of heart!! It is said that the SPIRITUAL JOURNEY is about acquiring nothing, but releasing everything that we have picked up along the way that gets in the way of expressing our fullest potential. Motherhood is by far the deepest process of letting go of all that I had acquired that doesn't serve the fullest expression of the Mother I know I am here to be. “

This powerful, authentic and enlightening conversation will move you.

In this episode:
-what is your mindset around self care and why
-root causes for women and moms for not taking care of themselves
-do you give yourself permission to ask for help and receive help?
-what are your residual cultural beliefs around motherhood
-how do you deal with guilt?

My guest for this episode is Suzi Lula. She is a much-sought-after Spiritual Counselor, Teacher and Inspirational Speaker who is an expert in the field of human transformation.
She is the author of The Motherhood Evolution: How Thriving Mothers Raise Thriving Children

28 Sep 2017Are We Over-Parenting in America? 00:36:07

I recently visited Armenia with my family for the first after 12 years. Even though I was born there and know pretty much what the culture is but to my surprise things had changed. This visit was special because I was visiting as a parent and parent educator and I was very intentional to observe how the Armenian people do the parenting business. Also, I met my friends there for the first time as parents with families.

For this episode I invited my dear friend Lusine to join me via Skype to discuss parenting differences and similarities between the Armenia and America. Lusine is a mother of an almost 10 years old boy. Lusine has noted that the issues are the same regardless of the geographical location. What surprised me about Lusine and most parents I talked to there, is that they have never even read a single parenting book. And this is why I pose a question: are we  over-parenting here in America?

Let’s dig in. :)

Some things we discuss:

-dreaded screen time and setting limits, the Armenian way vs The American (my way more specifically, don’t laugh at me too much)

-reasons why they are more relaxed around technology and media

-how does she get her kid to do things without yelling, nagging, punishing

-do kids have more freedom there?

-why kids are so easy going there and don’t give a hard time to their parents at least from my observations

-some secrets to setting limits

-how to teach kids to be respectful toward elderly

-why they have very few power struggles

-and so much more

She doesn’t follow any particular parenting style or philosophy. She says it comes to her naturally.

About my guest who also happens to be my dear friend:)

Lusine Taslakyan has twenty years of experience in water and environmental sector in Armenia and the Southern Caucasus.  She has a Masters Degree in Water Science, Policy and Management from the University of Oxford, UK, MSc in Environmental Science from the University of Idaho, USA and MSc in Biology and Ecology from the Armenian State Pedagogical University.  Ms. Taslakyan is specialized in natural resources management, policy development, river basin planning, trans-boundary cooperation, environmental impact assessment, climate change, stakeholder relations and gender mainstreaming issues. She has long term experience in promoting public awareness and participation in environmental decision making.

02 Nov 2017Healing From Trauma with Christina Louise00:50:08

My guest for this episode is

Christina Louise, The Peaceful Parenting Mentor and World's #1 Freedom Coach offers a unique understanding of what you and your child are going through right now, because she WAS a challenging child and troubled teen herself! Because her parents didn’t understand how to manage their emotions without going into fight or flight mode, she wound up experiencing years of abuse and neglect, which resulted in self-loathing, anxiety, trouble with the law, and other serious issues including severe depression.
But as an adult, she knew she had a CHOICE: She could blame her upbringing and continue suffering or she could take responsibility for ending the cycle of trauma and abuse.
She embarked on an enlightening road of personal and family transformation which taught me THE KEY to making life so much easier.
She condensed what took her two decades (and hundreds of thousands of dollars) to learn into Programs and Retreats that are designed to show you how to experience Peace, Purpose, and Prosperity in all areas of your life.

30 Jun 2022Parental Burnout: Causes, Signs and How to Cope With It with Kate Gawlik01:06:44

If parenting was stressful before the pandemic, during the COVID-19 global crisis, ⅔ of parents experienced some level of burnout.

The pandemic is not over and stress on parents is not going to magically go away and it is critical that we recognize and find ways to prevent burnout in parents.

Kate Gawlik, an Associate Professor of Clinical Nursing at The Ohio State University on how to recognize the signs of parental burnout and how to cope with it.

Parental burnout builds in stages, slowly. Phase one -overwhelming exhaustion. Next phase, burned-out parents tend to distance themselves from their kids to preserve their energy. And the third phase is loss of fulfillment.

You can take the self-assessment tool provided by Kate to learn more about yourself. Burnout runs on a continuum.

A report by The Ohio State University Office of the Chief Wellness Officer and College of Nursing found the stress was simply too much for many working parents to handle,  revealing that two-thirds of working parents experienced some level of burnout.

The study found an association between burnout and depression, anxiety, alcohol consumption and The research, conducted in 2021 found stress on parents also had consequences for children, as parental burnout was associated with punitive behavior towards their kids – including screaming, criticizing and even physical harm – and increased acting out by their children.

06 Jan 2022How to Rock Your Parenting in 202201:08:18

Today’s episode is a compilation episode. I have put together short clips from some of your favorite conversations to remind you of what’s important in parenting, to give you a boost of inspiration and positivity. in the new year.

I created this compilation episode so that you can start the new year with renewed energy and intention, a sense of hope and possibility, unshakable confidence that you are a good parent, courage to look within, a fresh perspective to keep your eyes on the big picture, a trust to be guided with your heart, a commitment to become comfortable with your own discomfort and befriend your emotions, willingness to examine your own patterns and shortcomings and of course a strong practice of self- compassion.

You’ll hear from Melisa Bernstein, Ned Johnson, Bill Stixrud, Ellen Gottlied, Bridgett Miller, Vanessa Lapointe, Howard Glasser, Laura Froyen and Laney- a thirteen year old girl.

I really enjoyed putting this episode together.

I hope you enjoy listening!

21 Oct 2021The Voice in Your Head and How To Harness It00:59:16

We all have an inner voice and how it manifests differs from person to person.

How well do you know your inner voice?

Rather than silencing the negative self-talk-the chatter, we need to learn how to harness it. This is the central question of my guest’s brand new book Chatter: The Voice In Our Head, Why It Matters and How To Harness It.

Ethan Kross, Ph.D  is an award-winning professor and bestselling author in the University of Michigan’s top ranked Psychology Department and its Ross School of Business. He has participated in policy discussion at the White House and has been interviewed on CBS Evening News, Good Morning America, and NPR’s Morning Edition. His pioneering research has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker, Harvard Business Review, USA Today, The Economist, The Atlantic, Forbes, and Time.

In this interview Ethan reveals the hidden power of our inner voice and shows how we can harness it to live a healthier, more satisfying and more productive life.

The good news is we are already equipped with the tools we need to make our inner voice work in our favor. Yes, that inner critic can become your inner coach.

Key points:

  • When do we first become aware of our inner voice?
  • How does harmful mental chatter influence people’s emotional health and physical health?
  • Does venting emotions reduce harmful mental chatter?
  • And so much more

23 Sep 2021The Complicated Mother-Daughter Relationship01:05:00

The mother-daughter relationship is one of the most important—and complicated in the lives of most adult women.

Helping my patients understand their mothers has helped me become familiar with parts of myself - and my mother - I might have never known if not for the stories I've heard, says Judith Rabinor, PhD,

We don't choose our mothers but as an adult you always have an opportunity to choose new pathways. It's never too late to let go of frustrated expectations and celebrate the connection you might have thought was doomed to disappointment and hurt.

Your mother is the most important woman you have ever known.

I’d love to suggest some books that I have found helpful:

  1. Motherless Daughters: The legacy of loss by Hope Edelman
  2. Motherless Mothers: How mother loss shapes the parents we become by Hope Edelman
  3. The Emotionally Absent Mother,: How to Recognize and Heal the Invisible Effects of Childhood Emotional Neglect
  4. The Drama of the Gifted Child by Alice Miller
  5. Mothers Who Can’t Love by Susan Forward

17 Feb 2022Why Your Happiness Matters with Ericka Souter01:09:20

Parenting is hard. But being a parent doesn’t mean you have to stifle your most basic wants and needs. It doesn’t mean it has to consume you to the degree of self-sacrifice and martyrdom and you definitely don’t need to lose yourself to be a good parent.

Ericka Souter, author of How to Have a Baby and a Life on why being good for our kids has to become synonymous with being good to ourselves.

If you are not happy, your children know it, moreover children suffer if the people taking care of them are not taking care of themselves.

Mothers who feel depressed are more likely to have children who act out or have other behavioral problems.

Researchers say that a mom’s satisfaction with her life is more important to a child’s social and emotional skills than how much money she has, the amount of time she spends with them, or whether she is working or a stay-at-home mom.

SOME KEY POINTS

  • Why you need a village and how to cultivate support for yourself
  • When it comes to friendships quality over quantity
  • The 3 conditions for lasting relationships
  • The surprising truth about sexless marriages and how to have more sex
  • How despite progress, women still bear heavier load than men in balancing work and family
  • How not having a child should be an option too
  • What do women talk about at NotMom Summit
  • Why the parents in US proved to be the most miserable in the world

02 Jun 2022Why Anxiety Is Good For You Even Though It Feels Bad01:25:19

Today’s guest —Tracy Dennis-Tiwary, Ph.D strongly believes that we pervasively misunderstand anxiety and presents a new framework for reimagining and reclaiming the confounding emotion as the advantage that it evolved to be.

She is a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Hunter College, the City University of New York, where she directs the Emotion Regulation Lab, and is cofounder of the digital therapeutics company Wise Therapeutics.

By thinking about anxiety as an unwanted affliction, we do everything in our power to do away with it. But when we accept the discomfort of anxiety and listen to what it’s teaching us, we become more creative.

Can you view anxiety as a gift and harness it to your advantage?

14 Dec 2017Why You Should Slow Down 00:48:33

Are you caught up in the frenzy of day to day modern life?

Are you busy, rushed, hurried and lacking time?

How much time do you spend with your kids?

How much time do your children spend away from you?

As the year 2017 is coming to an end, I invite you to rethink your priorities. This is a good time to pause and set new intentions for the coming year.

How do you want to spend your days? Where does your attention go?

We move through scenes like ghosts, without fully experiencing the moments and the events. We are rushing from place to place, constantly doing something...

Children are overbooked and over scheduled.

But the truth of the matter is we need to rethink our priorities, we need to change our lifestyle, we need to slow down, we need to have ample time for for children to play freely. We need to provide time and space for our children to decompress, experience downtime and just be bored.  Bored is the gateway to creativity. Not only our children do not have time and space to be bored but they not have time for daydreaming, processing what has happened to them during the day.

Highlights:

-how to recognize our relational patterns and triggers

-we heal together

-fighting with your partner is not a bad thing

-the importance of repair after a fight

-how to help children in transitions times

-why we need to slow down

-why is play so vital

-what is slipping away from our lives

-the importance of doing nothing, having downtie

-boredom is not a bad thing

Also, my wonderful guest walks us through a simple sensory awareness exercise.

7 Things You Should Do Every Day with Your Kids inforgraphic

Download Now

It is the most shared and commented post I have ever created in social media. Why? Because it resonated with everyone. We all know what’s true and what we need to do deep inside but somehow we get caught up in the frenzy of day to day life and get disconnected form our values, from our children and from ourselves.

Holiday season is another hectic time but I am sending this message to you and inviting you to reconnect with what’s important. To open space in your life, let your children be free, and play, spend time outdoors even if it’s cold. stop the madness, stop the doing and just be...And if you are having a hard time...ponder upon this question:

What are you avoiding by keeping busy?

Curious how much time you spend on your phone? Where does your attention go? How many times per day you pick up your phone or check your email?

Download the Moment app that tracks your screen usage. It might provide some important data which hopefully will encourage you to make some changes.

27 Feb 2020{Coaching} How Do You Become More Self-Accepting?01:16:11

Today’s episode is an on-air-coaching call. I’m helping Charlotte, a mom of 2 girls under the age of 10 from the UK.

Charlotte is carrying a massive guilt from the time of the birth of her first daughter She has created a story in her mind that she doesn’t have the “right bond” with her daughter. We start off by discussing her 8 year old's toileting issue, however the episode takes a completely different turn and we uncover some uncomfortable truths and make some surprising discoveries.

What gets in the way of her not being able to drop into the present moment and simply be in the here and now? Why does she feel that she always has to be doing something?

  • self-acceptance
  • letting go of guilt
  • forgiveness
  • self-compassion

21 Sep 2017Overseas Travel: Honest Sharing from My 9 Year Old 00:21:54

My 9 year old daughter shares her honest impressions, observations about our recent overseas travel to Armenia. It was her first time. She was going to meet my dad, her grandpa are you ready-for the first time. It was a big, emotional trip for me as well since I was going back after long 13 years. Many mixed feelings. If you listened to my episode with Bridgett Miller The Hardship of Uprooting and Establishing a Home in a New Place  then you know what I mean. Curious what she saw and what she has to say? Here are some of the key points:

Some things she talks about

  • The long flight, jet lag, 14 hour layover
  • language barrier and how “nobody understood her”
  • Food and more food
  • Armenian kids and their behavior and her message to Armenian parents
  • Armenian kids and screens
  • Bedtime, safety and on kids being unsupervised

When I asked her about her expectations she stated that they were exceeded:) She loved meeting my family and friends and she kept mentioning how nice people were.

She also stated that she will miss Armenia and will definitely go back very soon!

23 Jan 2025Redefining Success: Finding Joy and Fulfillment in Parenting and Raising Resilient Kids with Laura Gassner Otting00:55:19
19 Jul 2017 How To Be A More Conscious Parent By Changing The Way You Speak 00:45:31

In this episode I’m talking to Lori Petro the founder of TEACH Through Love.

Are you a conscious communicator?

Do you often wonder what to say to your kids?

Lori has created Conscious Communication cards to help parents become better, more effective communicators.

These "communication flash cards" help us transform the way we speak to our kids by turning our punitive and reactive language into compassionate communication which builds skills, relieves stress, and strengthens our relationships.

The hardest thing to do when you're facing a toddler tantrum, dysregulated kid, or a defiant teen is to stay calm and respectful.

The cards not only help us curb negative behavior and influence our relationship for the better - they also provide a strong foundation of emotional intelligence which allows kids to flourish into thoughtful, caring, and responsible adults

The cards show you how to restore your influence, reclaim your peace, and create healthy, intimate relationships with your kids. Finally - you can make requests that get HEARD.

There are 45 cards in each deck divided into three color-coded areas of challenge which help us target the root causes of conflict and address what's really going on behind the behavior.

13 Aug 2020How to Cultivate Self-Love00:57:17

What is self-love?  Where do the roots of low or lack of self- love originate? Are there degrees of self- love?

Is the opposite of self-love self-hatred? Can you love someone if you don’t love yourself fully?

How can you cultivate and practice more self-love?

This is the topic of today’s exploration. I’m joined by Nathalie Ellis

I’d love to hear from you. 3 things I’m particularly interested in:

  1. What’s your understanding of self-love?
  2. Can you love someone if you don’t love yourself?
  3. You have to love yourself before someone else can love you. Do you agree or disagree?

24 Oct 2019200! The Good, The Bad and The Unexpected01:23:31

Big milestone! The 200th episode!!!

Listen in as Authentic Parenting community manager Lauren Thomas hosts the show and puts Anna on the hot seat.

Did you ever wanted to know who is Anna’s most favorite guest? What are her top 3 most impactful episodes and why? What’s “the most authentic moment of the podcast” as Anna calls it?

What guest/s caught her off guard? She tells the tail of 3 guests. How about an interview that went off the rails? Yes, we cover that too.

If you wanted to know more about Anna and her specific parenting journey then tune in as she opens up like never before.

What was the most difficult age with her kid and why? Her answer throws Lauren off right from the beginning.

Curious about Anna’s “zen”, go -with- the -flow approach to life? She answers how she sets routines and handles shifts as years go by.

What is one thing she does in public that totally embarrasses her tween daughter. But she keeps doing it.

Why she cried for a week over a 3 star review...Ouch!

What the heck is a green stroller moment and was Anna judged by other moms when she decided to leave her toddler on the side of the road one day in anger?

Lauren also puts Anna on the spot by asking her some provocative and complex questions from our Facebook group.

How has the podcast change her life? Where it’s heading and so much more. One juicy episode and you don’t want to miss.

29 Sep 2022You Are Not a Bad Parent with Carla Naumburg01:14:24

Carla Naumburg, a clinical social worker, mother, and author of five non-fiction books, including her international bestseller, How to Stop Losing Your Sh*t With Your Kids is back to the show.

Have you ever thought that you were a bad parent, doing a shitty job, failing your kids or just doubting whther you were doing it "right"?

Parents feel that way. And there are real good reasons for that. We talk about that on the show. In addition, Carla shares tangible steps for how to use each to help parents reduce their anxiety, trust their instincts, move past the guilt and become a calmer, more confident parent. Which, in the end, benefits your child as much as you.

Great parenting is not the same thing as perfect parenting. Great parenting starts with true self-compassion, the kind that means you don’t judge yourself. Harnessing this self-compassion is the key to giving yourself a break and embracing your best qualities as a parent.

Today’s episode is an on air coaching call. I help Bethan, a mom of 3 kids from England, ages 6, 3 and 9 months to get some tips on helping her eldest son with physicality. It sounds like this little boy has a difficulty controlling his body, is physical, hits and kicks when he gets angry, squeezes the baby’s head hardly, doesn’t recognize boundaries, doesn't know how to stop, even when his brother tells him that he no longer enjoys the rough play. He also exhibits some sensory issues.

If you’d like to be featured on an on air coaching episode, I’d be thrilled to do a coaching session with you. It’s free. Go to www.autuhenticparenting.com/coaching short application and I’ll be in touch.

03 Mar 2022The Healing Power of Storytelling01:07:45
We all have a story. Your life story defines who you are. And only you can tell your own story.

By sharing it you not only release painful feelings, make sense of what happened to you, gain a new perspective, form a new meaning, but you access a possibility of transforming your life.

Whether you share your story orally or in a written form, it has healing power.

Do you have an untold story inside that is itching to be shared?

Kristy Lauricella and Judy Rabinor on the healing power of writing and sharing your stroy.

By revisiting and revising our stories and the meaning we attach to them is how our stories become one of growth as well as hardship.

11 Nov 2021How to Build Closeness with Your Kids01:04:59

A thirteen year old Laney and her mom Julie are here to talk about how they transformed their relationship. They went from fighting daily into a more peaceful, positive and connected place. Julie is an active member of the Authentic Parenting community and has appeared on the podcast before.

Julie has made some big strides and major shifts in her parenting. She has been consistently learning and growing. It's pretty amazing how far she has come. Turns out her daughter wanted to come to the podcast and share about their struggles and challenges and transformation.

In this episode we talked about:

  • How she navigates puberty, middle school and social media
  • What was it like to be diagnosed with ADHD in the pandemic
  • How she monitors her own screen time after having had a dependent relationship with it
  • The tools she discovered that help her with her anxiety and emotion regulation
  • And finally her sound, down to earth advice to parents everywhere

31 Aug 2017[Archive] How To Stop Yelling At Your Kids00:53:59

How to get kids to listen without yelling and nagging? We all want our children to cooperate easily. Many parents do struggle with challenge. That was the case for Carla who later ended up writing books on mindfulness. Why? Because it was helpful in combating the bad habit of yelling.

Yelling doesn’t have to be part of your parenting repertoire.

Carla shares with us her own definition of mindfulness which I love.
-how she integrated mindfulness into her family
– how it has changed her life from being less reactive to yelling less…and much more
-we talk about mindful listening
-an exercise you can do with your kids when they go from zero to crying
-how to create a calming down corner for your child.
-how to handle meltdowns public places…
She is witty, funny, smart and a great storyteller..

About my guest

Carla Naumburg, PhD is a clinical social worker, writer, and most importantly, mother. She is the author of Ready, Set, Breathe: Practicing Mindfulness With Your Children for Fewer Meltdowns and a More Peaceful Family (New Harbinger, 2015) and Parenting in the Present Moment: How to Stay Focused on What Really Matters (Parallax, 2014).

Carla’s writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Huffington Post, and Psychology Today, among other places. She is a contributing editor for Kveller.com, a website for those who want to add a Jewish twist to their parenting.

Carla holds an MSW and a PhD in clinical social work and she has an advanced certificate in mindfulness and psychotherapy. She grew up in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and the Bay Area of California, and she currently lives outside of Boston with her husband and two young daughters.

30 Nov 20175 Strategies to Avoid Power Struggles with Children 00:59:05

Description

This is our monthly special episode where I co-host the show with another colleague. For now, I have a Mystery Seat for each month and I invite passionate coaches or parent educators to host the show with me. This should be fun.

For the monthly special episodes the show has a different format.

We have 4 segments.

Examples from Our Home

What’s Up with You? Answering listener parenting questions

Favorite Finds

----------------

In the first segment I tell a story that happens very commonly in many households. My daughter one morning before going to school stated that she didn’t have shoes. How did I answer? Did I avoid power struggles successfully, was I able to listen and validate? Listen to find out. The same day I received a call from a client who said that his son woke up and said, “I do not want to go to school…”

Sound familiar?

Laura has two daughters: a 2,5 year old one and a 5 year old one. She shares a sibling rivalry story.

For this month Laura Froyen, PhD takes the mystery seat.

About My Co-host

Questions we received this month:

  1. A mom is frustrated with food related issue. She has strong triggers around wasting food. How to handle a situation where a child (3.5) asks for a specific food, is given the food, and then doesn’t eat it?
  2. A single mom who works from home has a hard time managing her time and her toddler.

12 Oct 2017Why “Hate” is Not a Bad Word [monthly special episode]00:39:16

This is the monthly special episode where I am joined by my lovely friend and colleague Sarah MacLaughlin. If you are a regular listener then you know that we have 3 main segments:

Examples From Our Home in which we both share parenting fails and triumphs.

What’s Up With You? in which we answer your parenting questions

Favorite Finds in which we talk about what we have read, or found to be helpful, resources, podcasts and such.

Anna’s story is all about a hair mask disaster. Her 9 year old daughter is into slime making and as she says some kid of chemistry lab is going on in her home.

Highlights:

-why our kids are so impressionable and guidable

-do you filter what your child hears or sees in the media?

-why shouldn’t be so hang up on the word “hate” and why it’s ok for your child to use it

In this episode we answer 3 of your questions.

The first one is about a mom who thinks she is helicoptering her 1 year old.

The second question is from a mom who wants to know how to help her child process big feelings, turn her negativity into positivity. They just moved to a new town and it seems like the stress and the change are impacting her 6 year old.

The third question is about a mom who wants to gain some balance. Her husband works 14-16 hours a day and her kids are so used to her that when dad is home, they still prefer her.
