25 Jan 2023Stop Looking at the Draw!00:13:49

Ohhhhh I've been wanting to write this one for a while. Innocent well-intentioned actions can do more harm than we think. We overlook the consequences of actions that WE think don't mean anything. But it's not what we think. It's what is.

I've worked with some players and parents who look at the draw and all it is is a waste of their time. It changes nothing for them. I've worked with others who can't help but look at their second round opponent, believe it's an easier match than the first one, and try to use that as motivation to have a focused first round match. They then go on to lay an egg in the first round, making that potential second round opponent non-existent.

Many who know me know I believe in efficiency. If the benefits of doing something are so skewed to the downside, I won't do it. I won't waste my time. I'll put my energy into something where it's better spent. Why risk ruining something if there's so little to gain?

18 Sep 2024How to Deal with Cheating in Junior Tennis00:53:49

This week I had the honor of joining Lisa Stone on the Parenting Aces podcast to discuss bad line calls in junior tennis. They're are an unfortunate but common occurrence. Whether they were intentional or an honest mistake, dealing with it can be frustrating for players and parents. In this episode, we’ll cover strategies for addressing cheating in a way that fosters personal growth, sportsmanship, a healthier experience, and the important role parents play.

28 Oct 20225 Most Important Things A Tennis Player Needs to Develop00:11:18

I prefer to work on a few things at a time for a long time. If a player works on too many things at once, they’ll be mediocre at everything, great at nothing. It’s better to master the most important things first, then start adding in everything else later.

1. Footwork

2. A Weapon

3. 2nd Serve

4. First Volley

5. Mental Skills (could be #1!)

13 Jan 2023Why Video Analysis is so Important00:13:27

Tennis is far behind when it comes to using video technology in their coaching methods. All major sports are using them and it's time for tennis to catch up! In this episode I discuss the benefits of using video technology, and how it can help in the development of a player.

22 Oct 2022Coaching Tennis is Easy. Coaching a Player is Hard00:09:41

Strictly coaching the tennis aspect of the game can be easy. High percentage is cross court. On the run is open stance. Contact point in front. Follow through. Weight forward. All that and more.

Even the non coaches who’ve watched and studied tennis for years as a hobby can point out basic things that are done incorrectly.

But when you’re coaching a player, you’re not just coaching the game. You’re coaching the person. Their personality. The moment. The day. The energy. The mood. Everything that doesn’t have to do with actually hitting the ball.

05 Apr 2024A Key Element to Mental Toughness: Routines In-Between Points00:15:27

A tennis player spends approximately 80% of a match WALKING around. Not running and playing. Walking. Yet we spent 99.99% of our practices working on everything else, and we wonder why most kids struggle to be mentally tough.

An argument can be made that the routines in-between points are the most important thing that will determine how mentally tough a player will be in a match. In this podcast I discuss the routine I try to teach the players I work with. If your players are not implementing a consistent routine in some form, please have them listen to this podcast! If anything will have a more immediate impact on their results, it will be this.

01 Apr 2024The importance of coaches showing up to tournaments, parent education, and creating a team atmosphere in an individual sport with Chris Trizzino.00:32:35

This is part 2 of a 2-part special guest episode with Christopher Trizzino. In part 1 Chris shared his fearless journey of how he started tennis very late at the age of 13, fell in love with coaching but had no idea how to succeed with it, and now runs one of the best academies in the entire region. This episode is a great reminder that you don't need to plan every step of your journey in order to succeed.

In this episode, Chris discusses the importance he places on parent education, being present at tournaments, and creating a team atmosphere in an individual sport.

24 Jun 2024High Performance Tennis is a Movement Sport 1st, Then Technical00:10:26

At the beginner level, tennis is a very technical sport, but at the high performance level, technicals take a bit of a back seat, and movement leads the way.

High performance tennis is considered to be one of the toughest sports in the world, due to the level of physical and mental fitness required. Unfortunately, too many people focus on the technical side of the game, as opposed to the physical.

You can work on your technique all you want, but if you can't get to the right position, with the right footwork, and have the appropriate strength to accelerate, you'll have trouble succeeding.

11 Mar 2024How a Parent Should Handle the Time In-Between 2nd & 3rd Sets 00:13:20

One of the least talked about areas parents have to deal with is the time in-between 2nd and 3rd sets. I wonder how many parents were given the heads up that they'd be put in a situation where they'd have to consider putting their coaching hat on. It's an unfair position to be put in. Parents aren't coaches! They're just there to parent, and this is a delicate and important moment in the match. How they handle this time is important! They can either provide more anxiety for their child, or bring calmness and confidence. I hope the few things I mention in the blog provide some help in handling these situations when the coach is not present.

22 Sep 2022Appropriate Tournament Scheduling Matters00:11:06

If someone’s tournament schedule isn’t handled appropriately, they won’t be prepared to play well. And if they don’t know what constitutes an appropriate tournament schedule, they’ll incorrectly have high expectations going into an event. They’ll be all excited as they’re playing their first tournament in a while. They’ve practiced a lot. They think they’re ready to compete!

And then boom!

They experience nerves under pressure for the first time in weeks.

Odds are, they’re going to struggle.

16 Sep 2023Tennis Strategy: Be Careful with the Word ALWAYS00:09:22

There are days where we wake up and for some reason, our favorite forehand is no where to be found. Our fitness levels feel depleted. Our legs feel like cement. And our serve feels like we forgot how to hit it.

There’s no real explanation for it. That’s just the way it is. Just like Steph Curry’s 3 point shooting percentage is never exactly the same day after day, neither is our tennis game.

Because of all that, we as tennis players need to be continuously flexible. When yesterday we needed to hit forehands cross-court because we were playing a lefty, today, we need to try to hit more down the line because our opponent has an incredibly good righty forehand. Is it higher percentage to go cross-court? Yes, but our opponent’s forehand is so good, we’re almost guaranteed of losing the point if they’re able to find that shot. So today, the lower percentage shot to execute, the down the line shot, now becomes the highest win percentage play.

Tomorrow, you might play someone with a better backhand than forehand, so now you’ll go back to hitting that forehand cross-court.

And on and on it goes, and that’s the world tennis players need to live in. The world where everything is about percentages, not rules, and those percentages can seesaw back and forth depending on the flavor of the day.

13 Dec 2022My Experience Coaching in Israel00:16:53

Juniors in the United States talk about the pressure to win. The pressure to get their UTR up and get into college division. The pressure to win because success in tennis is unfortunately how they define their self-worth.

Can you imagine having to win just so your mandatory military sentence is not so intense?

In Israel (and maybe other countries too), if you’re one of the best amateur athletes in your sport, you’ll be allowed to continue training while completing your service. If you’re not one of the best, it will be more difficult to train.

How do you work around that pressure?

There’s no quitting to get away from the stress. There’s no “oh just play for fun” or “don’t worry about the rankings.”

Your ranking does matter as a junior. Your success does matter. It can legitimately change your life.

Sure, for American’s, if their ranking isn’t high enough, they might not get to play college tennis where they wanted, but they have the option to go to college, get a job, and move on with their life. They’re not forced to go to the army.

So it’s an extremely difficult balance in Israel. Focusing on winning now has been proven to limit development, therefore limiting success in the future. Focusing on learning, developing, and letting the winning happen when it’s meant to happen is the best way to improve the fastest.

But how do you tell a kid that they need to focus on their development when their success as a junior determines if they're wearing combat shoes or tennis shoes in a few years?

So for the American’s or citizens of a country that don’t have a mandatory military service, please appreciate the life you have. It’s not like that everywhere else.

31 Aug 20235 Ideas to Improve High Performance Junior Tennis in the USA00:17:04
The hardest part when selecting the 5 things to fix in high performance junior tennis was narrowing it down to just 5! A lot has changed since I started playing junior tennis. Some things for the good, but some things for the worst. Maybe it's just because now I'm a coach that I'm more involved with what's going on, but it's tough to sit back and listen to stories of parents wondering if they should pull their kid out of tennis. There will always be kids that switch sports. That's totally fine. But I'd love for it to be for other reasons. Hopefully this blog can get to some people in charge and get the conversation started. And if you have any ideas that are different, I'd love to hear them as well! Heck, the majority of the ideas I have come from listening to other coaches and parents sharing their thoughts! http://www.aubonetennis.com/blog/5ideastoimprovehpjuniortennis
08 Oct 2023My Dream Junior Tennis Training Setup 00:12:02

This podcast crossed my mind as I put myself in the shoes of many parents, and wondered what type of training setup I would look for if my son decided to pursue high performance tennis. I tried to be reasonable. Of course I’d want everything on site right ? Nutritionist. Mental coach. Physical therapist. Restaurant. Indoor courts. Classroom. Locker rooms. Etc. Etc.. The list could go on forever.

But few places like that exist, and they’re usually part of a massive operation. I don’t want to be a part of a massive operation. I want something small. Something where a team and family atmosphere can be created. Something where a kid doesn’t get lost in the shuffle and thrown on the back courts if they aren’t performing at the highest level of tennis.

Thinking about what that might realistically look for, I came up with the list in the photo above. (If you haven’t done so, please read the list on the photo at the beginning of this post).

02 Dec 2023Redefining What A Weapon In Tennis Is00:08:05

When we think of the word weapon in tennis, we’ve been trained to think of a powerful weapon. A big forehand. A monster serve. The ability to finish points at the net. Something that can overpower your opponent, and take the racket out of their hand.

I’d like to redefine that.

23 Jan 2024How important is it to train with a higher level players? The Academy's dilemma.00:19:11

Answering this question is straight forward, but finding that type of environment is difficult.

-There will always be a higher level training group so at some point, a coach has to say no, they can’t move you up.

-Does the player show a disciplined effort to train at 100% no matter who they're with?

-Is it fair for the higher level players when the lower level player joins them?

-Can you get better training with a lower level player?

These are the things I discuss in this podcast, along with how important it actually is to train with higher level players.

08 Dec 2023Culture, Character & Discipline First: Windy Hill High Performance Tennis Manager Marcelo Ferreira00:54:10

This week we have a special episode! It's the first time we have a guest joining us. Marcelo Ferreira, Windy Hill High Performance Tennis Manager joined us to discuss the incredible program he's built in Atlanta, GA.

Marcelo discusses how culture, character and discipline come first, and then tennis. Their person first approach combined with their holistic mindset is what makes their program so unique. Fitness, yoga, meditation, nutrition, and mental skills training are a mandatory part of their program. Their group sizes are limited, and their dedication to proper development is refreshing in today's climate of revenue first programs. It's no surprise that their program has turned out the #1 girls 12u player in the country, as well as this year's Boy's 16u Eddie Herr Doubles Champion. 14 Oct 2022You Can Lose & Get Better 00:10:49

When people believe their basic qualities can be developed, failures may still hurt, but failures don’t define them. And if abilities can be expanded-if change and growth are possible-then there are still many paths to success.” - Carol Dweck “Mindset”

Losing is always going to be painful, even if you lose the right way. For parents who don't have a tennis background, they're not sure what they see in a match. They just see a bunch of shots and the result. And if their own experiences serve them correct, winning is succeeding, losing is failing. A's are good F's are bad. But in tennis, the grading scale isn't based on the result of the match. Not only can someone lose and get better, but they can win and get worse.

29 Apr 2024Why taking your child to a collegiate or pro event can be a game changer00:14:46
If you can’t see these things in person, it’s hard to get inspired by them. It’s hard to feel the magic. It’s hard to feel the crowd come alive. It’s a completely different feeling to see a 145mph serve in person come off of Isner’s racquet. To hear the sound of Juan Martin Del Potro’s forehand as it connects with the center of his strings. To see Federer’s beautiful gliding slice that barely goes over the net. To see and hear Nadal’s huge fist pump after a forehand buggy whip winner on the run from the back corner of the stadium. Growing up, one of the biggest inspirations I had each year was going to the Miami Open. Every March, my parents would take my brother and I to the tournament, and it was one of the most exciting times of the year. It was an opportunity to see the best players in the world, up close and in-person, learning and studying the best. I wanted to be like them. I wanted to be as good as them. It was a yearly motivational event for me. Hope you enjoy the podcast. Check out www.aubonetennis.com for more podcasts, blogs, and information on my coaching services!
20 Dec 2022The Difficult Emotional Balance Junior Players Have to Manage00:09:57

Working hard for something we don’t care about is called stress. Working hard for something we love is called passion.” Simon Sinek

When you stop to think about it, it’s incredibly difficult. The balance we ask kids to find, while going through the biggest hormonal change in their life, is tough.

Most parents and coaches (yes, not all) try to preach about not worrying about today’s results. They ask the kids to focus on getting better and not care if they win or lose. “Just give 100% of your energy and focus and make the most out of today” is some version of what they say. It’s the right idea, and the correct thought process that helps athletes improve the fastest. But let’s take a deeper look into what what we’re asking kids to do.

10 Nov 2022Learn How to Compete WITH Your Nerves00:13:05

"Five minutes before entering the central office, I suddenly felt really bad, extremely nervous. I started to cry. I even had to go throw up a bit.” Stan Wawrinka discussing his emotions before walking on the court for the 2016 US Open final. He won the match and the title.

“You know, half an hour before the match I didn’t even want to step on the court, because I just really felt really bad, and I had to, like, lock myself in the physio room and I had to talk to my psychologist. I was actually crying.” Barbora Krejcikova discussing how she felt before her 4th round match at the French Open in 2021. She won the match as well as the singles and doubles title later that week.

“Have no fear” or “don’t be nervous” or any of that junk is the biggest bunch of bologna on the planet. Things like fear, stress, and nerves never go away. There will never be a match where a player feels absolutely nothing but calmness before stepping onto the court. If that happens to them, they probably don’t care enough.

Champions like Wawrinka and Krejcikova are full of all sorts of miserable emotions during big moments. They’ve just learned how to compete with them.

27 Sep 20227 Things Your Training Environment Needs00:16:42

“Does my child need to homeschool to make it to division 1 collegiate tennis?” - Junior Tennis Parent

It’s a question parents ask themselves all the time. They hear the stories of players coming out of IMG, Saddlebrook and other academies. They hear the stories of former successful players practicing 4-5 hours of tennis a day, doing fitness, and think that might be the only way.

I’m here to say…….it’s not the only way.

But the things home school programs offer must be done some how and this is where a lot of after school programs fail.

They fail because after school drills occur during the busiest times of play. This limits the types of practices they can offer.

Homeschooling programs occur during the quietist times of the day. They can use as many courts as they want to spread kids out. This allows coaches to run the best practices possible. They can do match play, full court singles drills, proper feeding drills, utilize the gym for fitness, etc.

For after school drills to offer the same quality practices, they’d have to severely limit the number of kids taking part in drills, or limit member or public play so the kids can have more courts to spread out. Both options hurt their revenue, and would leave a lot of people unhappy.

The good news is, if a parent can implement the following 7 things in their child’s development, they’ll have a better chance of making it to division 1 college tennis, without homeschooling.

16 Feb 2024How to become a great tennis player: The difference between a good attitude & a champion's attitude00:11:55

A champion is someone who gets up when he can’t” - Jack Dempsey It’s a hard thing to explain to someone if they haven’t gone through something incredibly difficult and challenging, and refused to back down. It can also seem like an unfair thing to explain to a young athlete. When talking to a child, a psychologist probably wouldn’t be too happy with a coach saying physical effort is not enough, and that deep inside that child has an extra gear, a 6th or 7th gear they need to tap into to take their game to the next level. I’ve had to do that before. It’s tough and I need to be careful with my words, but I’m not in the happiness business. I’m in the high performance business. I’m in the growth business. I’m in the “I’ll be happy when I’m improving as a tennis player while trying to achieve my goals” type of business.  It’s not for everyone. I say it all the time. There’s multiple ways to enjoy tennis. Choosing the right path is important because that’s where you’ll find true happiness. Neither one is wrong. But if being the best tennis player you can possibly be during competition is the tennis journey that’s for you, then you need to know the difference between a good attitude and a champions attitude, and embrace it. 04 Oct 2022What Are Match Play Skills & How to Develop Them00:15:38

If you're a competitive tennis player like I was, you need match play skills! And these skills are different than technical skills. They include:

- how to use your strengths and hide your weaknesses

- how to position yourself

- what adjustments to make in your strategy

- developing the routines in between points such as how to breathe, when to take time, when to play fast

- how to handle cheating

The best way to develop these skills is.....having coached practice match play, and having your coach watch your competition! Unfortunately, most players do have these things and are playing events ill-prepared. . Also, they're at a severe disadvantage when they compete against opponents who DO have this as part of their development process.

Go to www.aubonetennis.com to learn more. You can also reach out to me through my website in case you have any questions or comments.

08 Feb 2023UTR is NOT the Problem00:23:18

Junior tennis ranking systems for people to be obsessed with have existed for decades. UTR is just another system with its own advantages and disadvantages. What’s changed is how academies, parents, and players have easy access to seeing the “ratings” thus exposing how much they actually look at them.

04 Mar 2023Parent Education is More Important in Junior Tennis than in Most Other Sports00:16:13

This can probably be said for most individual sports as well.

Team sports have the advantage of having everything organized for the players. There’s a coach. A season. A set schedule. Set practice times. Uniforms. Etc..

Sure, there’s still a cost to all that, but all the information is put together, and handed out to the parents. They know what to expect, what their schedule is, and then put on their uber hat and drive the kids everywhere.

That doesn’t exist in junior tennis.

18 Aug 20244 Tips to Improve Your Recovery During Tennis Tournaments00:14:39

Recovery has become one of the hottest topics in junior tennis talk over the last few years. With the implementation of doubles at so many events, kids are finding themselves consistently playing 3-4 matches a day. That’s a lot of tennis for young kids, especially in the summer. Understandably so, I’ve heard of many players whose level of tennis drops precipitously towards the end of the tournament, right at the most important time to play one’s best tennis. Hopefully this podcast can help players avoid that same fate, and instead play their best tennis when it really counts. Check out www.aubonetennis.com for more information on how to become a better tennis player during competition! #tennis #tenniscoach #tennisplayer #tennistips #recovery #tennistraining

02 Mar 2024 Racquets or string? Polyester for kids & testing racquets: Equipment talk with Philippe Oudshoorn00:53:42

What's more important to a player, the racquet or the string?

Should kids be using polyester strings?

What's the best way to test racquets?

These are some of the questions we asked racquet specialist, and Head of USA Marketing for Tecnifibre, Philippe Oudshoorn.

Philippe is an incredible resource to have because his knowledge of these things is directly from the player and coach's perspective. Before joining Tecnifibre, Philippe played collegiate tennis at the University of Virginia, then professional tennis, coached collegiately at George Washington and UCF, and finally as a National Coach for USTA Played Development.

There's no better person to talk to then Philippe when it comes to equipment. Tecnifibre provides Grand Slam winners (Daniil Medvedev, Iga Swiatek, Joe Salisbury), many top professionals, and top juniors with the best equipment in the world.

27 Dec 2022Cheating is Not the Reason You Lost00:10:10

We have a tendency to spend too much time talking about bad calls after a match. Even if they happened at big moments in the match, how did you lose all the other points? How did you get down 5-4 40-30 match point in the third set anyway? How did you lose a set prior to that?

We need to focus on the biggest reason you lost. Was it the 36 forehand unforced errors? Or the 14 doubles faults?

Let's put our attention there instead of the 4 or 5 bad calls you THINK went against you.

23 Apr 2023Homeschool Hack for Junior Tennis Players that Go to Regular Schooling00:11:40

One of the most common questions I get from junior tennis parents is should my child home school? Is it the only way they can develop into a division 1 collegiate athlete?

And I get that question not because they’re in love with the idea of homeschooling. It’s because they feel like they’re being forced into it by the current junior tennis structure. Most parents don’t actually want their child to homeschool. They want to keep them in regular school.

Well I have a way to work around part of the issue. I can’t help you with your school being upset about absences due to tournament travel, but I can help you in regards to a better training environment. It’s going to be a huge commitment, but if you’re considering homeschooling, you’re already extremely committed to doing everything possible for your child’s success.

So here we go.

  • 15 Jan 20242023 Review: 3 things I learned & 3 things that stayed the same00:16:14

One of my favorite things to do at the end of the year is to take some time to reflect. Days can quickly turn into months, and just like that, the year is over. It’s hard to stop, slow down, and evaluate things, yet it’s something I try to do as much as possible. It’s during these moments that we can fine tune our process, and redirect our coaching energies to the most important places.

In this podcast I discuss the 3 things I learned in 2023, as well as 3 things that stayed the same. Enjoy!

    29 Sep 20236 Tennis Nutrition Tips00:20:14

Twice in my life I've made improvements to my nutrition, and they were so impactful that I can never go back to my old ways. The foods and liquids we consume, how we consume them, and when we consume them have a direct affect not only our energy, but our mood. If we have low energy, we’ll be more at risk of being in a bad mood, having a negative mindset throughout the match, and we’ll struggle to make proper decisions.

If you’re going to spend thousands of dollars a year on tennis training, the last thing you want is for your nutrition to ruin everything. Give this area the same attention you would any other part of your tennis training.

The tips in this blog are not so much about what to eat, as that is very specific to each person, and a nutritionist should handle that, but more so about how to handle certain important situations. Hope you enjoy the blog so much that it kick starts your own personal nutritional discovery!

17 Apr 2024Pick Your Junior Tennis Poison - High performance or a "nice" experience00:12:44

What are you willing to tolerate on your high performance junior tennis journey? Some people can't handle the emotional outbursts, bad line calls, frustrating parents, and the overall emotional roller coaster. They want a nice respectful game, with a nice relaxing atmosphere, and if goals aren't achieved, it's not a problem. Others can tolerate the roller coaster so long as progress is being made and the child is showing continuous signs of happiness.

Unfortunately you have to pick. Striving to have a beautiful and calm atmosphere with continuous progress will more than likely not be a successful journey.
