23 Apr 2019ATI Extra - British Comedy Guide Pro00:05:24

A firm friend and supporter of the podcast, Mark Boosey, has launched an awesome new side of the British Comedy Guide for comedians / performers called "Pro". In it you can learn about the industry, find out about job opportunities and events, enjoy exclusive articles and podcasts and more! Another big feature I love is that you get control over your CV page (here's mine).

If you are going to sign up, please use this link ( https://www.comedy.co.uk/pro/?code=ATI ) and type in ATI in the checkout box so you can save £5 off a years membership (and I get a few quid for everyone who does this as well).

Everybody wins.

PS I was not paid do this, I wanted to do it to support Mark's work and the BCG in general... and the affiliate link sealed the deal.

  • Why the "power" of so many venues shouldn't be held by two massive Free Fringe / Festival offerings.
  • Why they didn't crowdfund the new venue
  • Why they were so secretive about the project before "going live" to the Scottish comedy community.

03 Nov 2017EP91 – Helen Stead – Founder of NCF Comedy – The differences in comedy audiences between places in the midlands.01:01:42

Helen Stead is the director and founder of NCF Comedy which started back in 2009 at the Nottingham Comedy Festival. Since then NCF has grown and had 8 successful comedy festivals and runs shows in Nottingham, Birmingham, Leicester and throughout the midlands all year long.

We talked about how you process with NCF, the difference in audiences from place to place in the midlands and why she does no free comedy nights (even her new material one is £1 entry). This is a far cry from London where every open mic or new material night is free.

Mike Leigh is the founder of MLA Talent. They're not just a talent agency they also produce a lot of free digital media and podcasts creating their own podcast network to share audiences.

I got him on to talk about...

  • How does he scout for new talent or online content to develop?
  • Does it help having a following online to get on TV or radio?
  • Why he thinks there’s so few great comedy producers now.
  • Why he thinks acts with big profiles shouldn’t be doing the Free Fringe and who he books at his Fringe venue.

02 Feb 2018EP97 - Peter Fellows - How to build a mainstream and indie writing career at the same time.01:07:53

Peter is a film writing, actor, producer, director and basically anything that is involved in movie and film making from the script to the post-production to the organising of screenings. We talked about how he got started making films as a child and how the change in technology has enabled him to continue creating his own projects but also work on mainstream TV and films.

I got him on to talk about...

  • How he went from making stop-motion with his dads tape camcorder to making content for MTV.
  • The most effective order to put together a film.
  • How he used his DIY indie films as calling cards to work with his comedy writing hereos on blockbuster films.
  • How he's built a career and a network without any social media.
  • The hidden pressures of crowdfunding.

05 Nov 2017The Audio Time Capsule - Series 1 trailer.00:10:36

INCOMING...here comes a little bit of cross-promotion.

Hello, Ask The Industry listeners....

I'll keep this brief.

I've been working on another podcast for 3 years. It's taken me 2 years to learn how to edit to a skill level that means I can do this show and another year to create the first episode, why?

The show is where the guest comes on, leaves 15-20 questions, then a year later comes back on and answers them. I then edit it so they're talking to their past self.

It's called The Audio Time Capsule. It's my best work in an audio medium by a country mile and I'm stupidly proud of it. I'd really love it if you could support my work by giving it a listen or subscribing.

03 Jun 2018EP102 - Doug Stanhope - How to avoid all industry and build your own fan base.01:09:47

Doug Stanhope (@DougStanhope) is a comedian, writer and podcaster with nearly 30 years of performing under his belt. After cutting his teeth on the open mic circuit, Doug moved into MCing a “crappy” hotel gig which gave him the taste of being a “comedian with a point of view”. Since then he’s spent his time building his cult-like following and touring with his brash, honest, loud and often controversial style of comedy.

I got him on to talk about...

-Building his audience from scratch one email at a time (before social media

-Why he started his podcast

-What he hates about clubs and the club circuit in general.

-How and why he puts up boundaries that keep fans as fans and not friends

-Why he wouldn't laugh at his own jokes or act.

04 Jan 2019EP110 - John Robertson - You awake to find yourself in a Dark Room.01:33:02

John Robertson (@Robbotron) is a comedian, writer and video game creator. We talked about what it was like starting out in Australia and moving to the UK. Touched on his early brushes with comedy competitions including Australia Got Talent where he faked a seizure. 16 Mar 2018EP100 – Jon Mountague – Comedy Commissioning Editor at Sky.01:17:45

Jon Montague (@montiQu) is the head comedy commissioner at Sky TV. He heads up a team of diligent commissioning editors who are tasked with finding and making funny shows to entertain their 11 million subscribers. More recently Jon has also dipped his toe into podcasting and we got into what it's like making high end, high budget TV programs by day and low budget, low tech podcasts by night and how that's given him a new outlook on the internet, content and more.

I got him on to talk about...

-What makes a hit show on Sky and how he measures a hit show.

-Do they take unsolicited scripts?

-What makes a hit (to him and his team)?

-How he uses Edinburgh to scout for new talent

-What’s it like making TV for 11 million subscribers and then going home to make an episode of his niche podcast to a significantly lower number of subscribers.

This interview would be good for anyone looking at developing a TV show and isn't sure where to start or the process after writing it or a comedy fan who wants to know how much work and how many hurdles there are to get a show on the TV. It would also be useful in knowing the difference between a public and a private service broadcaster and why that matters when pitching for shows.

My 2nd book is finally out! It's called "How To Make A Living By Working For Free" and you can buy it here for £5 (digital) or £8 (paperback). Here's the synopsis of the book -

The book is a how-to guide for artists to create their own online community for their work and how that community can support the artist to become sustainable in every way.

The book takes a critical and in-depth look at the media's perception of "free content" vs the reality of what the general public see it as.

If you're an artist in the modern age who wants a sustainable audience you're no longer just an artist, you're a community leader.

14 Mar 2015EP13 - Sean Brightman - How To Make The Most Of Your Edinburgh Fringe Programme Listing00:42:10

In this episode I interviewed comedian, promoter (and most importantly for this podcast) Edinburgh Fringe Program designer Sean Brightman. Sean has made thousands of flyers and been producing the PBH & Freestival Fringe Programs for a number of years. He kindly shared his "do's" "don'ts" and wisdom with us. We talked about -

  • How to make the most of your tiny listing.
  • Are the Fringe program adverts worth it?
  • What's different about PBH & Freestival programs?
  • Is it worth having a photographer and designer as two separate people?

And lots more! If you're a comedian who is thinking about going to Edinburgh (or any Fringe festival) there should be something for you in this short episode.  I am sorry the audio quality isn't as good as it normally is, but we couldn't get in the same room and given how close we are to the deadlines (when I uploaded this) I just wanted to get it made and out there.

We recorded it over Skype (which is something I am trying to never do again!) You can find all the questions and things mentioned in the podcast in the show notes here - http://simoncaine.co.uk/ep13-sean-brightman-how-to-make-the-most-of-your-edinburgh-fringe-program-listing/ You can hear the other podcast interviews with marketing / designers here - http://simoncaine.co.uk/ATI/Marketing  Thanks so much for downloading, hope you enjoyed it.

If you'd like to read the first few chapters of the book you can find a PDF version of that here.

05 Feb 2015EP07 - Iszi Lawrence - comedian, podcaster & Edinburgh poster designer.00:52:25

In this episode I interviewed comedian, podcaster and Edinburgh Fringe designer Iszi Lawrence.

This is the first in a "Fringe poster / marketing materials" series I am working on. As performers we all struggle to get good posters / flyers, this is my attempt to ease that pain and help make it easier to understand what makes a good poster for me ( and you). If you're not a comedian this podcast will give you an insight into the work and effort that goes into the production of a Fringe show and club set behind the scenes both before and after the performance.

 We covered -

The book is a how-to guide for artists to create their own online community for their work and how that community can support the artist to become sustainable in every way.

The book takes a critical and in-depth look at the media's perception of "free content" vs the reality of what the general public see it as.

If you're an artist in the modern age who wants a sustainable audience you're no longer just an artist, you're a community leader.

If you'd like to read the first few chapters of the book you can find a PDF version of that here.

05 Feb 2015EP08 - Iszi Lawrence on branding - comedian, podcaster & Edinburgh poster designer.00:14:46

In this episode I interviewed comedian, podcaster and Edinburgh Fringe designer Iszi Lawrence.

After talking about poster, flyer and marketing materials myself and Iszi kept talking about the deeper concepts around branding as a performer and things you can do above and beyond performing live to build audiences. It's a shorter episode as it was unplanned, but I still felt this was worth sharing.

 We covered -

  • Advice on approaching agents.
  • Iszi’s advice on succeeding and staying happy with your work.
  • How to think about what you look like on stage.

And more!

19 Feb 2015EP10 - Luisa Omielan - Comedian behind the hit show What Would Beyonce Do?00:55:15
In this episode I interviewed comedian, improvisor and MC Luisa Omielan. Her debut solo hour was called What Would Beyonce Do? She took it to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2012 with no buzz, no press coverage, no industry help and no PR... The show became the sleeper hit of the Fringe and has launched her career as a stand up. She currently sits below the line of "famous" but has sold out 7 runs at the Soho Theatre. We talked about -   - How to generate your own word of mouth and the value of that in Edinburgh. - The role social media played and continues to play in her audience building. - Her advice to people taking their first show to the Fringe. - Fame vs having your own audience. - The behind-the-scenes story of how she went from having no industry interest, to having an agent, a PR team and a sell out run in London.  We covered the pros and cons of having industry help vs doing it yourself and more! If you're a comedian who wants to know what goes on behind the curtain of really good stand up shows to make them get the recognition they deserve or you're an audience member interested in the hard work that you don't normally get to see from a comedian going from "unknown" to "having their own audience" this podcast is for you. You can find all the questions and things mentioned in the podcast in the show notes here - http://bit.ly/ATILuisaOmielan You can hear the other podcasts in our series of DIY comedians here - http://asktheindustrypodcast.tumblr.com/DIYComedians Thanks so much for downloading, hope you enjoyed it. 22 Mar 2015EP14 - Kate Copstick - Head reviewer for the Scotsman Newspaper at the Edinburgh Fringe01:58:56
Kate Copstick (or Copstick as she prefers to be known) is the head comedy reviewer at the Scotsman Newspaper during the Edinburgh Fringe. She's been a reviewer for 20 years and has judged several comedy awards. Outside of reviewing she co-runs the The Grouchy Club podcast with daily comedy blogger John Flemming and writes for the Erotic Review (a magazine she purchased over a decade ago). Most of her days are spent in her charity shop (Ma Ma Biashara) in Sheppards Bush and she talks about how the work she does in Kenya informs her work as a writer. She's infinitely interesting and provided such a unique insight into the business from someone who has watch it change from the "industry" side for over 2 decades. We talked about -   - Her name. - Common Fringe mistakes (titles / desc / image) - How to contact her (the right way / how / when) - How the Scotsman Newspaper operates & how many reviews they publish each year. - Why she loves Luisa Omielan and would work as her doorman to keep her on the Free Fringe - Why she loves Dapper Laughs and thinks he was bullied - Is TV just a boys club? - And her thoughts on why women aren’t as good on panel shows. - Comedian’s sense of entitlement for audience and achievements. - Her thoughts on the comedy “thought police” censoring comedians. - The web TV show we’ll be working on (hopefully post-Edinburgh) - Her thoughts on Andrew Lawrence and the lack of intelligent commentary / responses to his remarks. - Why she doesn’t review Freestival shows (and what her rules are for the shows she will go and review). - Are there any agendas / politics behind the awards at Edinburgh? - How her charity work has helped inform her reviewing AND MORE. If you're a comedian who is thinking about going to the Edinburgh Fringe and interested how the mind of one of the most feared and revealed reviewers works this is the podcast for you. You can find all the questions and things mentioned in the podcast in the show notes here - http://simoncaine.co.uk/ATI/Copstick You can find a list of all the podcast interviews with comedy reviewers here - http://simoncaine.co.uk/ATI/ComedyReviewers  Thanks so much for downloading, hope you enjoyed it.
