Chapter 143: "Learning To Swim By Being Thrown Into The Pool" ...as read by Jack O'Shea Jack's very first, "real" studio experience was with J Robbins. Not a bad way to start! Bayside completed their contract with Victory Records without any drama, came through the other side of a horrific van crash, and is still making today! Jack also released his first solo ep in February because Ethan Luck told him to (more or less). Huge shoutout to Jamie Arthurs for getting me in touch with Jack (and Nathan Gray). 22 Feb 2015 | BVC018: Andrew Elstner of Torche, Tilts, Riddle Of Steel | 01:26:28
Sometimes, it's good to know Stephen Sarro. He got to be friendly with Andrew Elstner of Torche via the inter-webs and said he would try to get him on the show...and it worked! Andrew was nice enough to tell us his whole story. We've got hilarious stories about James Hetfield and his cell phone...how he had to get a baby at a restaurant involved in joining Torche...fighting evil robots to save Miami and why overseas venues always seem to have gummy candy. Andrew got his copies of "Restarter" about five minutes before he started talking to us, so he is checking them out for the first time while on with us. Torche's new album "Restarter" out on Relapse Records on Feb 24th. Go. Buy. Rock. Seriously..."Barrier Hammer" is one of the heaviest tunes they've ever done. Music by Van Halen, Riddle Of Steel, Tilts, Torche, Torche again because they rule, Helms Alee and INXS. 03 May 2015 | Andrew Elstner of Torche | 01:39:24
If you aren't laughing during this one then your earbuds are broken. This chapter is exactly what we've set out to do with this podcast...which is tell fantastic stories. We revisit for the first time (trust me, that's accurate) with our pal Andrew from the band Torche and recap their North American tour. Andrew wrote a tour diary and we pick some highlight stories. Like...Grand Rapids, MI is connected to New Zealand by a magical Lord Of The Rings pinball time machine. ...CC Deville of Poison has awful ideas about guitar sponsership in Toledo. ...There is a secret place of solace for bands in Montreal. ...Philadelphia almost killed Andrew by way of diarrhea. We get a little personal and talk about life off the road and the in-between stuff of a professional musician and how precious it is to cut your grass. One last thing: There is a great guy out there named Jonathan Dick. He writes a lot and if you're into music you may have already read some of his stuff. His daughter is suffering from a respiratory disorder called ciliary dyskinesia. Follow the link below and just read.

05 Apr 2015 | "No New Kinda Podcast" | 01:10:04
Welcome to the maiden voyage! We have a bunch of guests lined up for the future but we're gonna ease into this first one, mkay? This week we talk about the early and untimely passing of Death bassist Scott Clendenin...only 47 years old. Total bummer. We are gonna discuss new purchases, music we are currently into and any live shows we see. But this time we can combine all three because we went to see a Torche show together. We caught the Wrong/Nothing/Torche show in Philly so we talk about that too. Finally, we review the documentary No New Kinda Story and reminice about the old days and discuss Tooth & Nail's impact on our lives and the music scene. Good times. Chapter 105: "Ghosting The Room" ...as read by Jason Thomson of Vast Robot ArmiesThis chapter is dedicated to one of my favorite finds called Vast Robot Armies. Jason Thomson and I became fast friends via email about the podcast and long story short: here we are. Jason founded a band called Vast Robot Armies and I have really taken a liking to their Life And Times/Archers/Hum/Polvo style. Jason and I talk about how the band got started as pretty much just him, meeting up with Allen Epley of Life And Times, misconceptions of Canadians, being a new dad and a killer Will Sasso story. Check out the links to learn everything you need to know about VRA and I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. Chris Carbonell of the legendary Strongarm tells us all about it. We get it all. How he got started in the very early Florida scene in the band Icthus (I'm sure that's spelled wrong), playing drums with Strongarm and then returning to the band as the vocalist. Nope. Not kidding. Adam Robinson of the hilarious Portlandia shares his chapter with us...phone issues and all. (Gotta love technology.) Adam was influenced by his musician father who is still in three bands in his mid-70s! He tells us about his new teenage mutant turtles guitar, his mom fighting cancer, his first bands and earliest gigs, his love of the band jellyfish. Adam tells us how Portlandia came to be. It all came from a strange opportunity because "some dude broke his foot"...hey, ya never know. His story of the FIRST time he met Fred Armisen is hilarious and how he's still a fanboy of Steve Buscemi. I am joined in the intro by Mister Werkheiser and I get to tell you all about the awesome experience I had at an Umphrey's McGee show. This has been a great week. Chapter 47 Notes:

Jamie Holmes is a self-made man. Jamie has been a cornerstone in the punk and indie Lehigh Valley PA scene as the owner of Double Decker Records. Double Decker started back in 96 and still going strong. Listen to how Jamie had do duck and weave his way to remain relevant for almost twenty years. There is so much to know, but it remains the same as every other story: the most important tool is flexibility. Jamie knows what he's doing. Then we are joined by his associates Ray Gurz and Chris Bickert. Ray is the leader of the band Tile as well as another called Bad American. (I shoved a Tile song in here for you somewhere...) Chris is not only the nicest guy ever, he's also Braid's tour manager (Don't believe me? Bob Nanna himself said so in Chapter 12.) Plus he brought donuts. These are the people in my neighborhood...in my neighborhood...in my neighborhood...but they're in your neighborhood now, too thanks to the magic of podcasting. Enjoy. (No donuts though...) One more thing: Nate Allen, friend of the show, has a lil' rekkid coming out with his group Nate Allen And The Pac Away Dots. 10 May 2015 | Seth Hecox of Becoming The Archetype | 01:36:58
One of the more successful Solid State bands, Becoming The Archetype hits close to home. They've always been our brothers from Georgia. Trav's guitarist Alex from Aletheian joined BTA for an album. BTA slept in our home a number of times, recorded in the first incantation of Trav's studio, made a Solamors album with Jason and Alex. (Haha...just the site of Jason Wisdom sleeping in my kid's room...hilarious.) Anyways...Seth Hecox has been one of our friends for over a decade. Follow his story as we learn about his secret love for folk/electronic music...so much so he's experimenting with blending the two. This guy played with Five Iron Frenzy and opened for Reel Big Fish! He loves baseball...I mean LOVES baseball. The Hecoxes (what's the plural on that?) are expecting another baby. We learn about some of the interesting facets of working in a Lutheran church. Seth has some Becoming The Archetype news...you gotta listen. One last thing: There is a great guy out there named Jonathan Dick. He writes a lot and if you're into music you may have already read some of his stuff. His daughter is suffering from a respiratory disorder called ciliary dyskinesia. Follow the link below and just read.

24 May 2017 | Alexis Marshall of Daughters | 01:31:59
Chapter 102: "Suns and Daughters" ...as read by Alexis Marshall of Daughters (and formerly As The Sun Sets) Recorded on March 31st, 2017 Alexis Marshall has been the lead vocalist of Daughters for 15 years. He was the lead in the group As The Sun Sets and I'd recommend them as well. This guy is actually one of my favorite vocalists because I love his approach to his vocal style. Snarky and backhanded with plenty of metal still in the tank. "Lex" tells me about his troubled childhood, parental stuff, living on couches and his climb out of alcoholism. I love this discussion because he didn't have to open up like he did...but he did. We learn that the iconic "announcement" after As The Sun Sets and before Daughters was a mistake. There is plenty of turbulence in the band's past. And, hilariously, if it hadn't have been from Andy Low of Robotic Empire kinda lying to Lex and Nick they may not be back together now. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed speaking to him. Daughters FB page: https://www.facebook.com/daughtersmusic/ Chapter 102 Music:

Chapter 145: "Off Track Betting And Other Parlor Games" ...as read by Shawn Matthews Was Combat Chuck the very first viral sensation? Ok, maybe not. But pre social media and YouTube, Shawn was able to create a fictional persona that reached over a million people. Pretty impressive. Shawn shares the Combat Chuck origin story, tells tales from the Banana Man photo shoot, touring with Ghoti Hook and Stavesacre, and briefly talks about his amazing band Poole. Yeah everyone is busy, but this guy... ...is in a little band called Thrice who is touring again: http://thrice.net ...has started a new band with members of Curl Up And Die, Thrice and Kowloon Walled City called Less Art: https://www.facebook.com/LESSARTBAND/ ...cohosts a music and baseball podcast with Ian Miller called Productive Outs: http://productiveouts.com ...started a joke side project baseball grind band called Puig Destroyer: https://puigdestroyer.bandcamp.com ...and produces his own music: https://rileybreck.bandcamp.com He is also an exhausted new parent trying to find his way. We discuss all his musical endeavors and even in- between band jobs. (He sold a suit to baseball phenom Mike Trout. Seriously.) Riley explains how touring is different than it was before being a dad and we go into the deep end of the pool about faith. Thank you Riley for taking the time and thanks Ian for connecting us. Also, this podcast has an exclusive Less Art clip for their song "Shapeshifter" that Riley was nice enough to let me push out there. Enjoy! Chapter 89: "The Audio Medium (Alpha)" ...as read by Daryl Rabidoux of Cancer Conspiracy and Radar Studio(Recorded on January 6th, 2017) In the early 2000s I heard an album that changed my life. A small band called Cancer Conspiracy put out a full-length on Big Wheel called "The Audio Medium" and it became one of my favorite albums. I had the pleasure to talk to Daryl Rabidoux who played guitar in Cancer Conspiracy. Daryl and I weave an epic-length story covering his entire timeline. I sliced it in half because it seemed that the first half focused most of its attention to Daryls' beginnings up through The Audio Medium. Enjoy and if you think you'd enjoy Fugazi and Faraquet playing King Crimson I highly recommend you hunt this album down. Special thanks to my son Ben for helping me figure out an ending to part one...stay tuned, and SUBSCRIBE. Oh my God. I thought I'd have to tape up my ribs. Jason Hamacher of Frodus is about as unique as they come. Drummer of Frodus, Regents, Zealot (and about a dozen other bands you've heard of) joins me and guest host Seth W for TWO podcasts! This is the first of the two. I tried to make this one wrap up but Jason...is Jason. Story after story after story made me so thankful I didn't hit the stop button. Hamacher talks Frodus, his land breaking and nothing short of historic relationship with Syria, we get heavy Christian theology, the super touching story of Jason's life from 1999-2003 that changed all the directions, massaging Ben from Dillinger Escape Plan...just hang on. It was just too good for one podcast. Chapter 56 Notes:

07 Sep 2015 | Dan Gailey of Phinehas | 01:05:59
Sure there are a lot of musician stories, but how many of them ACTUALLY walked away from college to do it? Daniel Gailey has that exact story. Dan had a full wrestling scolarship to college and opted to shred guitars instead. It is so great to see how far he has come in such a short amount of time. Dan Gailey seems to have a niche of being able to step in, learn quick and improve upon the guitar in metal bands. This 26 year old is an old metal soul who isn't ashamed to solo. Oh...and there's a little tease with some BTA news...shhhh....it's a secret... Onto Phinehas, who are poised to become the next kings of the Christian metal mountain. Dan has had one, no that isn't a typo, one live practice with Phinehas. One. Think about that. Phinehas is unashamed, proud and just crushing every tour in their path including the next biggie in October. Thanks so much to Seth W for joining me and Amy from Atom Splitter PR for setting this all up. We love Dan, and Seth, and Amy, and you. Take care. Bye-bye.
