27 Feb 2025How to Put Your Art Out There with Confidence | Amie McNee00:44:34
Being an artist is tough, especially when the world tells you it's not a "real job." Amie McNee knows this struggle all too well. She spent years battling self-doubt, feeling embarrassed about wanting to make art her life. But instead of giving in to fear, she rewrote her story—literally. Through journaling, she found confidence, challenged societal expectations, and built a creative life on her terms. Now, she’s inspiring other artists to do the same. Her message? Your art matters, and success is worth preparing for.
30 Nov 2023Carrie Scott on feminism in the art world: What drives her fusion of art, business, and feminist ideals?01:16:22
This week on our Arts to Hearts Podcast, our host Charuka Arora has invited Carrie Scott to talk about her career as a writer, curator, art historian, and TV presenter. As Carrie and Charuka sit down, they talk about the art world, wearing multiple hats as a creative, and how women are expected to behave in a patriarchal world. Carrie started her career as a writer, but soon she shifted her focus towards the art world. Carrie’s passion for helping artists was a major catalyst behind her professional decisions. From being at a writing agency to doing temporary exhibits, she has come a long way in her creative journey. What always drove Carrie was her love for arts and how she found purpose in this field. At the same time, she acknowledges the baggage that comes with being in the art world, as being an artist is not an easy job, contrary to what many people still believe. For Carrie, her career took a significant turn, when in 2009, recession happened. For her, it ended up being a blessing in disguise because Carrie was able to launch her own business at a gallery and an art consultancy. Over the past decade, Carrie has worked with numerous well known artists including Nick Knight and Marina Shacola. Carrie's approach is centered on collaboration and building meaningful partnerships. She seeks out artists who have a clear vision, and helps them navigate the art world, whether it's through exhibitions, publications, or other creative projects. In this week’s episode, Carrie also talks about not just women in general, but also women in arts. Since the beginning, Carrie has noticed the stark contrast between the treatment of women and men, and she highlights how in this day and age, women still have to fight for equal pay. Discussing the place of women in today’s world, Carrie calls attention to the fact that not much has changed between the 80s and now, and there is still need for a lot of change in the society.  To listen to more of this insightful conversation and understand how Carrie was able to build a successful career without a definite plan, tune in to this week’s podcast.   We are calling all women artists for our incredibly special “ATH Magazine Anniversary Issue”. 11 Apr 2024How to figure out your creative process |Studio Visits w/ Rajul Shah, Chilu, and Anne van Midden|00:45:32
This week, our Arts to Hearts Podcast is a special one because we have not one but three guests! Chilu, Anne van Midden, and Rajul Shah are among the 50 artists that have been featured in our latest Studio Visit Book Volume 3, where you can read about their creative process through intimate photographs and revealing interviews. These artists talk about how art is a meditative process for them in some way, and while the final art form may differ, the act itself is deeply therapeutic. This week’s episode is an opportunity for our listeners to get to know these artists beyond the pages of our Studio Visit Book. Chilu, Rajul, and Anne also share what their art is about and what their creative process looks like. While Anne compares her process to choreography, Rajul shares an interesting activity that calms her and gets her in the 'creative mood'. Through their respective creative journey, our guests have gained quite a lot of insights, and hence, have some words of affirmation to share. Ultimately, what helps young artists is when they stay true to themselves. 14 Dec 2023How to build your self confidence as an artist00:28:48
This week on Arts to Hearts Podcast, our host Charuka Arora sits down to have a heart-to-heart with her beloved audience. As our third season nears its end, Charuka is giving the aspiring artists some tips from her own experience in the art world. As someone who has been on her own creative journey for some time now, Charuka has learned a thing or two, and as she looks back on how far she has come, she is guiding other aspiring artists on how they can find their confidence in their abilities as an artist. If Charuka were to start her creative journey today, she would ask herself six questions to make sure she knows where her heart is so she can ensure that her creative journey goes on as smoothly as possible. For Charuka, it’s important to put unwavering faith in yourself and your creativity, and for that, you need to ask yourself if you are ready to do that. Furthermore, it’s important to understand that hurdles are part of the journey, and that you need to be ready to fall a million times, and get back up every single time. The third thing you need to do as a creative, is to embrace your emotions fully, no matter how difficult or uncomfortable it may feel at that moment. The fourth question you must ask yourself is whether are willing to break free from the fear of judgment. After you have broken free from the societal shackles, you must look within and ask yourself, if you are ready to write your story, as that is the most crucial aspect. And in the end, you must love and accept yourself fully, and ask yourself, “Can I be unapologetically myself?” This episode is filled with wisdom and some amazing reflection exercises, so tune in to this week’s podcast and join Charuka on this exploration of what it means to be an artist!   We are calling women artists from around the globe for our upcoming event, the “101 Art Book Contest", which aims to boost recognition, fame, and exposure for female artists. Pallavi shares her personal journey as an artist and how she explores the grooming culture of men in Indian society. During our conversation, Pallavi opened up about her experiences in art school and the challenges she faced in the art world. She reflects on how her work has evolved over the years and the importance of questioning societal norms and expectations. Pallavi’s art aims to challenge these ideas and provoke thought. This week on our Arts to Hearts Podcast, we have Tanmaya Bingham as our guest who is not only amazing at creating art but also mentors and teaches younger artists. With her experience with art management, she has seen all the cycles in the art world, the good and the bad both. Now, she is using her gifts and insights to serve other artists. As our host Charuka Arora sits down with Tanmaya, the latter talks about the early stages of her art career, what her ambitions and dreams were, and how she was able to evolve and grow over the years. While Tanmaya started as an abstract artist, she shifted her focus to drawing people. Her journey as an artist consists of highs and lows, both of which have played an important role in her growth as a creative.  Just like every other creative, Tanmaya also had her fair share of self-doubts, which she addressed by traveling to various places including Nepal and India. These experiences really helped shift her perspective on what she was or wasn’t meant to be. For her, having a full-time art career was not a possibility until she spent some time in India, a time which helped open her eyes to the various possibilities that lay in front of her. Tanmaya believes in putting yourself out there as an artist, as it is only then that you can go through a transformation that will be beneficial to you and your creativity. She believes that the negative phases in life are as much, if not more, important than the positive phases. As artists, we must embrace life as it comes, with all that it has to offer, and only then we can unleash our true potential as creative! Tune in to this week’s podcast and listen to Tanmaya talk more about her creative transitions and learning curves as an artist! 02 Nov 2023Carrie Pearce on how to creatively grow as an artist00:36:37
This week on our Arts to Hearts Podcast, our host Charuka Arora invites Carrie Pearce to talk about her artworks. Carrie, who is a passionate painter, discusses how her art has evolved in the past few years, and how she overcame her creative block. Carrie’s artwork mainly comprises of portraits and paintings of dolls. Her art style is very reminiscent of the 16th century art with its realism and focus on human form. Recently, she has somewhat changed her artistic expression by incorporating materials such as beads, fabric, embroidery etc. in her paintings. Her transition came after COVID, after she went through a massive creative block. However, she managed to find her path again, and since then, has been creating some truly magnificent art pieces.   Over the past few years, Carrie has undergone struggles of her own as she transitioned through her artistic expressions. However, she has embraced this change with open arms, and welcomes art collectors who also appreciate her evolving style. Talking about her childhood, Carrie recalls painting and drawing for as long as she can remember. From being inspired by Ann Adams to being fascinated by DaVinci’s art, her styled can be described as ‘imaginary realism’. She sees her art as ‘emotional portraits’ that are inspired by turn of the century photos that we often find at antique stores. Carrie has been featured both internationally and nationally, including Fine Art Connoisseur, and has a website dedicated to reviving realism in fine art. Tune in to this week’s podcast as Carrie talks about accepting her inner artist’s transition, how she found her way back to her true self, and what does her creative process look like.   We have an open call for artsits to join our "Emerging Woman Artist Award". 14 Mar 2024How to connect with art curators | Liza Zhurkovskaya|00:30:13
This week on the Arts to Hearts Podcast, we have Liza Zhurkovskaya as our guest. Liza is an art curator and art advisor. For the past nine years, Liza has been working with corporate and private clients where she assists them in building their collections. Now, she has her own online gallery which supports artists and better assists her clients with acquiring original art and curating their collections. In this episode, Charuka and Liza talk about emerging artists in the digital age, struggles in the art world, and curating for ATH Magazine issue 6. Liza was born in Russia and moved to Canada when she was 17. Once in Canada, Liza felt an instant connection with the galleries and museums. It was when she had her first gallery job that she realized that this could be a great fit for her. She felt confident about handling the artists and their needs, and that is the skillset someone like her needs to be successful at what she does. Talking about having multiple ventures, Liza admits that she doesn’t see it as debilitating, rather, it’s an advantage because if something financially doesn't work one month, she can work a little bit more on another thing and vice versa. This also helps keep her motivated to grow and aim bigger. For the emerging artists out there, Liza has a positive outlook to share. She thinks that being an emerging artist in today’s age of social media is an advantage as they can choose their own route. Such artists have the option to decide whether they want to sell on their own or if they want to be with galleries. The possibilities are endless, and that can prove to be a big advantage. Liza is also our curator for the ATH Magazine issue 6. She has a few tips to share for those who want to be featured in our upcoming magazine, so listen to the entire podcast to know more about how you can get selected!   Arts to Hearts Project is thrilled to announce the launch of our new call for art for a virtual exhibition, accompanied by the creation of an exquisite artist’s book. The virtual exhibition promises to be a captivating showcase of visual experiences, while the artist’s book will serve as a timeless collection of these vibrant creations. 07 Mar 2024Building relationships in the Arts |What you need to know |Anupa Mehta, Gallery owner00:35:53
This week on the Arts to Hearts Podcast, we have Anupa Mehta as our guest, who is a force to be reckoned with in the contemporary art world. In this episode, our host Charuka Arora asks Anupa about her experience in the art world, the shift has she seen over the years, and her own relationship with artists and art collectors. Anupa has been in the art world for quite some time now, and she has closely witnessed how things have changed, something she touches upon in this podcast. Anupa has had an illustrious career. With three decades of experience as an editor, art consultant, curator, and gallerist, Anupa is not only trained in journalism and arts management, but she also holds a Master's degree in Narrative Therapy. She is also the founding editor of Art India magazine, and the author of INDIA 20, a book of interviews with leading contemporary Indian artists. Anupa started her career at a time before the evolution of the digital world, and so she misses the slowness of life and how people were able to have a conversation face to face. While she enjoys her work as much as she did all those years ago, she can also sense a shift in perspective and behavior among the younger artists. For those contemporary artists, Anupa has only one piece of advice and that is to ‘be adaptable’. Listening to Anupa, it becomes clear why and how she was able to excel in her career path. As a gallerist, Anupa knows the art of building relationships. She values trust and integrity above all, and that is why she is able to form sustainable relationships with her clients, whether they are art collectors or artists. She still looks at the world in a way that may be described by some people as old-fashioned, but that is a good thing. It is precisely those values that have enabled Anupa to see through people and gauge their needs, and that’s what makes her so good at what she does. So, tune into this week’s full episode to find out more about Anupa and how she sees the art world of today! During this episode, Charuka is joined by Marie, Claire, Ritina, and Rebekah, all of whom have contributed their unique artistic talents to the "101 Floral Art Book." Each artist shares insights into their personal journey, their artistic medium, and the inspiration behind their work. Marie Younkin, based in Brooklyn, is a painter who primarily works with water-based media such as acrylics, gouache, and watercolor, often incorporating vibrant neon pigments. Claire Elliott from Portland, Oregon, focuses on oil paintings and has a profound connection to nature, which deeply influences her artwork. Ritina, originally from India and now residing in Tennessee, expresses her art through both acrylics and oils. Her work predominantly features landscapes, capturing the serene and wild aspects of her surroundings. Rebekah, located just north of Seattle, Washington, is a watercolor artist who draws significant inspiration from her previous coastal living, frequently portraying tropical flowers and scenic views. 26 Oct 2023Ali Hval on how to turn your fears into strength00:43:38
This week on Arts to Hearts Podcast, our host Charuka Arora has the pleasure of sitting down with Ali Hval who was the Emerging Woman Artist Award Winner 2023 edition. Ali is a visual artist in Iowa who deals with fabric, installation, ceramic, and painting. Her interest in adornment and the politicization of the body is reflected through the forms and materials she uses in her artworks. In this week’s episode, Ali talks about how she became an artist, what inspires her art, and how she was able to navigate her career. From painting as a young girl to going to grad school to finally starting her own art career, Ali always had a rebellious nature where she looked at the world in a different light. In many ways, her art challenges the traditional feminine and masculine dichotomy. With her pom-poms, glitters, chains, and locks, she is combining different elements and is redefining the spectrum that aims to put people in boxes.   Just like other artists, balancing creativity and art has been a struggle for Ali. Being an avid muralist, Ali has completed over 40 projects in various communities across the country, projects that have provided her the financial stability she needs. However, combining her style with her murals has been a challenge for her, something she is still figuring out. Ali also touches on the subject of being the winner of the ATH emerging artist award, and how she feels about the entire process. She links it with her disappointments and rejections in the past, and how everything in her life has led her to this moment, for which she is truly grateful. To find out more about Ali and how she found her niche and dealt with challenges as an artist, tune in to this week’s ATH podcast. 29 Feb 2024Why community plays an important role for artists and gallerists |James Oliver|00:31:07
This week on the Arts to Hearts Podcast, we have James Oliver who is an artist from Philadelphia as well as the owner of the art gallery ‘James Oliver Gallery’ (JOG) in Pennsylvania. James already had a successful career as an artist when he decided to open his own art gallery almost 17 years ago, something that happened quite naturally for him.  Growing up, James had already spent much of his years organizing festivals, etc., and so managing a gallery was something right up his alley. In addition to that, having a spacious art studio meant he didn’t need to hunt for any suitable spaces, and so he trusted his instincts and took this major step in his creative journey.  For James, being an artist never came in the way of his managing his art gallery, and vice versa. Everything that he has done so far has been to sustain himself and generate enough income. For him, starting another business was just another way to support his art career. His secret to managing it all lies in the fact that he is constantly challenging himself and trying to get better at what he does. Without letting the pressure get to him, his motto is to let it all happen slowly and gradually, something that keeps his business steady.  As an artist and an art gallery owner, James’ motivation also comes from the feedback he gets from people, and that pushes him to continue doing what he does. He sees the value of community, as it’s his hard work as well as the community effort that keeps him going. Despite JOG being a commercial gallery, according to James, people do want to help and support to make sure it’s as successful as possible, and that really highlights why we as artists need to come together in support of each other.  To find out more on how James transitioned from his role of an artist to a gallerist, and how he has been managing it so far, tune into this week’s full episode!   We're delighted to announce that we are now accepting art submissions for the sixth edition of ATH Magazine! 04 Jan 2024How to set your art goals in 2024 |Liz Lidgett|01:09:09
In this week’s podcast, our host Charuka Arora sits down with Liz Lidgett, who is the founder and owner of Liz Lidgett Gallery + Design. As the two ladies sit down to talk about their career paths, they have an honest conversation on setting realistic goals, creating a kinder space for artists, and collecting art. Liz Lidgett began her art consultation business ten years ago, and since then, she has worked with artists, businesses, homes, and publications across the country. The reason why she opened her own gallery in the first place was because she was too passionate about the art world, and wanted to rectify the things she saw in it as problematic. For her, the art world is not just about the creating, selling and buying, but also creating a space for artists where they don’t feel limited. Most of all, she wants artists to feel respected and welcomed. While Liz grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, she later moved to Los Angeles, which is known to be the art hub. However, she felt that the work she wanted to do would do well in her own community. So, she started her own business in the Midwest which caters to artists from around the world. She was able to identify the things in the industry that she would not like to have in her own business, and now she brings the same passion and excitement to the table that she wants her clients to have. For Liz, her definition of success has changed over the year, and she loves to follow her dreams while being able to spend time with her kids. Liz’s experiences over the years have also provided valuable insights into the way she runs her business. For her, dealing with art and artists is not a matter of making a calculated decision, but rather the way she experiences art, and that’s why we need more people like her in the art world! So, tune in to this week’s podcast and listen to Liz Lidgett talk about how her passion for art drives her to be a source of inspiration for others! 25 Apr 2024Imposter Syndrome: One habit every artist must adopt to get rid of it |Susan diRende|00:59:07
This week on the Arts to Hearts podcast, we have Susan diRende as our guest. Susan has led a very fascinating life to say the least. Apart from being a painter, she has also been a teacher, has made some films as a writer, and spent a few years in real estate as well as a theatre company. Her books include ‘Knife Witch’, a fantasy adventure, and Unpronounceable, a sci-fi/fantasy farce. Susan continues to remind us that age indeed is just a number, and you can pursue your dreams as long as your heart is in it. She did various jobs to support her passion for making art, and today, she is still very much consumed by her ventures. Her biggest fear is that she will regret not having done enough, and so now she is making sure that that doesn’t happen! Susan’s positive energy is evident in the podcast as well as the Instagram reels she posts on her account. She believes in living each day to the fullest and showing up every day. Through her travel experiences and the work she has done so far, Susan has a lot to share. One thing she has learned from her life as an artist is to be consistent. Even if it’s a small thing, you must stick to it and do it every day as it is the one thing that has helped Susan successfully keep in touch with her inner creative. Susan’s philosophy in life is to seek novel experiences, as they are the ones that keep us young. She still loves to travel and takes things as they come instead of worrying over what she will do after a couple of years. This attitude has opened vistas for her, as she always tries to do things she has never done before, and in turn, this practice keeps her creativity alive! Catch up on this week’s podcast to listen to a very candid and lively conversation between Susan and Charuka, where Susan details the many adventures she has been a part of in her life! 04 Jan 2024How set goals for 2024: An Artist’s way00:16:16
Welcome back to another episode of the Arts to Hearts podcast! It's hard to believe that we are already in the fourth season and have reached over 200 episodes. When I started this podcast, I never imagined it would come this far. But here we are, three years later, reflecting on the journey and the exciting things that have happened along the way.  As I sit here, without a script, I can't help but feel a mix of emotions. Yesterday, I held in my hand a book that we've been working on for far too long. It started as a simple Instagram feed, and now we have a whole book in our hands. It's been a journey, and I couldn't even imagine this a few years ago. Looking back, I remember the feeling of uncertainty when I started. I questioned whether I was good enough, whether I could make something out of this. But I'm glad I didn't listen to that voice. I'm glad I pushed through and pursued my ideas. And now, here I am, running an arts company, publishing books, and creating a community platform. With the new year upon us, I know many of us have mixed feelings about goal setting. We often feel the pressure to keep up with the world, to set goals and achieve them. But I've come to realize that it's important to find goals that are aligned with who we truly are. It takes time and self-reflection to figure out the person we want to become, the life we want to create. For me, the process of creation has always been a driving force. I envision myself as someone who is constantly creating, exploring new projects, and living a creative life. It's not about achieving specific goals in a set timeframe, but about becoming the person I want to be, living a little bit more of a creative life each day. Goal setting doesn't have to be overwhelming. It's not about following a formula or ticking off boxes. It's about envisioning the life we want to create and finding our own rhythm.  That's why I'm excited to announce the "Artist You Want to Become" workshop. It's not just a workshop, but a meditative process where we will explore our dreams, clarify our goals, and create an energetic plan for the year ahead. During the workshop, we will spend seven days together, with three live calls, workbooks, and exercises to help you gain clarity and create a plan that aligns with your true self. It's about finding your north star, your guiding point, so that even when you feel lost, you can always come back to that energy and feel centered. If you're interested in joining me on this journey, simply send a DM to Arts to Hearts Project (@artstoheartsproject) on Instagram with the message "Artist 2024" or email us at artist2024 at info@artstoheartsproject.com. We start on the fifteenth of January, so don't miss out on this opportunity to kickstart your year with intention and clarity. 11 Jan 2024How to sell your art in 2024| Marina Granger|01:06:00
On this week’s Arts to Hearts Podcast, we have the lovely Marina Granger with us. Our host Charuka and Marina have a very fascinating conversation where they talk about feng shui, morning rituals, EFT tapping, and creating a stellar elevator pitch. Marina is an art consultant and founder of The Artist Advisory. She talks about practicing feng shui, and how her holistic approach has benefitted her in her creative life as well. For Marina, her mornings start with recording a voice memo, which consist of three steps: talking about what she is grateful for, what her intentions for the day are, and what her future dreams are. She talks about her dreams and intentions in present tense, as if they already have happened. According to her, it’s a good strategy as the mind is too gullible, and making such affirmations can truly help one achieve their dreams. Marina loves to help artists out so they can realize the best strategy to carve their own path. She provides an excellent take on how artists can curate their elevator pitch, which consists of telling the clients why you do what you do, and what makes you special. In a world where selling your craft and your art can be tricky, it’s always a good idea to have a fresh approach towards curating your image!   Born in Ukraine, Marina moved to New York when she was seven. Marina has 15 years of experience working in the museums and galleries in New York City. With a master’s degree in Art History, she has worked with artists, curators, dealers, collectors, and consultants. She shares that if she would ever have the option to open her own gallery, it would have to be in New York city! Tune in to this week’s podcast and listen to Marina talk about the artists and art world in detail! 12 Oct 2023Kaylan Buteyn on following her creative dreams while navigating motherhood00:50:14
This week, our host Charuka Arora invites Kaylan Buteyn, who talks about her life as an artist and a mother. Kaylan’s journey is a fascinating one because she became an artist after becoming a mother. Unlike many other artists, Kaylan did not have the luxury to give her career the time she wanted to. Despite the odds, she talks about discovering her creative passions and the challenges she had to endure while juggling the roles in her personal as well as professional life. For Kaylan, it was hard to find opportunities in a small town, but she created her own path on her own terms. In this episode, Kaylan talks about the beginning of her career, how she found her true passion, and how she manages it all with three children. Apart from creating art in her studio, she is also the founder of Artist/Mother Podcast which aims to provide artist mothers a platform to share experiences and connect with each other. The podcast community has now grown and it exists as the Thrive Together Network which supports female identifying, non-binary, and trans artists through retreats and exhibitions. Working in textile, Kaylan channels her inner artists by making quilts, abstraction, domestic textiles, and collage. Unlike most artists who are drawn to blank canvases, Kaylan is drawn to materials, rips stains, and texture; these elements inspire her. Kaylan likes to play with the material she has collected over time, and the fabric compositions she makes are a direct reflection of her future and past self. In fact, it was motherhood itself that gives Kaylan her inspiration, as her maternal experience have contributed to her abstract art. Kaylan believes in materials holding memory, and through her art, she aims to explore physical representations of generational care. With quilting, dying, sewing, painting, gluing, and stitching, Kaylan creates pieces that are more than just art. Each piece tells a story and contributes in linking places, people and perceptions. To read more about how Kaylan balances her roles of being a mother and an artist, listen to this week’s podcast and find out how mothers are often crushed under unrealistic societal expectations.    Pre-Order our Studio Visit Book Vol 2. here: Learn how you can UNLOCK YOUR CREATIVE POTENTIAL in 2023.
