04 Jun 2020 | Kathleen Hudson - A Sense of Possibilities (35) | 01:04:00
Kathleen Hudson's paintings capture fleeting moments of light and atmosphere. She says, "My paintings represent specific places and moments in time: the brief point during a sunrise when the sun fills the air with an ethereal golden glow; a break in a storm where light pierces through heavy clouds; or the sight of glacial runoff sending waterfalls down the side of a mountain wreathed in fog.” Kathy artfully creates rare moments of beauty where light and atmospheric movement become sublime. When painting outdoors, Kathleen is drawn to scenes of expansiveness. She keeps an open mind as she searches for a scene that moves her. She is not afraid to paint the same scenes that others have painted before her, because she is confident in her own vision and her own voice that she uses to expressively paint the landscape. As the morning kiss of light begins to illuminate the landscape before her, Kathleen Hudson’s creative heart and mind come alive with a sense of possibilities. 20 Oct 2020 | Jeffrey T. Larson - Finding Deeper Beauty (46) | 01:18:48
Jeffrey T. Larson’s evocative paintings are stunning visual essays of beauty. His contemporary paintings are deeply rooted in academic realism. Because of the extremes in seasons in his home state of Minnesota, Jeffrey spends his time painting outdoors in its all-too-brief warm summers. His outdoor paintings glow and shimmer with the drama of light. Whether the scene is of a woman silhouetted against warm sunlight hanging laundry to dry outdoors, or a young boy is wading through a cool, sparkling stream – your eye is drawn to the beauty of the moment captured in Jeffrey’s expressive impressionistic brushwork. As the air chills and it becomes too cold to paint outdoors, Jeffrey turns to painting indoors. Carefully staged, each still life brims with quiet beauty and drama. His subject can be a rack of artisan bread loaves, or an old Art Deco style Electrolux vacuum cleaner, or a pack of clementines still in their plastic packaging, or an old child’s tricycle all rusted and worn. Meticulously painted and finished - sometimes over a period of several months, these paintings never appear stiff. They are monumental works of beauty. Jeffrey T. Larson was born in 1962 in Two Harbors, Minnesota, and grew up in the Twin Cities. He was trained in the manner of the Old Masters at the prestigious Atelier Lack – founded by artist Richard Lack. It was a place whose traditions and training methods reached back through impressionism and the 19th-century French academies. Jeffrey's training provided a firm foundation in the fundamentals that allowed his artistic voice to flourish. The road to becoming a professional artist was not an easy one. Jeffrey is quick to acknowledge he often lived on the edge of frustration. In time he learned to enjoy the business side of being an artist and his success at making a living as an artist grew as he and his wife Heidi – also an artist. His story is beautifully told in filmmaker Joe Hawkins’ documentary titled: Jeffrey T. Larson. Jeffery’s paintings may at first invoke a sense of nostalgia in the viewer. Yet, his paintings are timeless. The subject matter at first may seem prosaic and mundane, but there is clearly much more present in the painting. Jeffrey draws you into the painting and invites you to take a closer look and observe what he has found. And, as you stand there immersed in experiencing that painting, Jeffrey T. Larson is already off on his way on another mission to finding deeper beauty. Mentioned in this episode: Jeffrey T. Larson Website Great Lakes Academy of Fine Art Jeffrey T. 18 Aug 2021 | Britt Snyder - A Sense of Something More (62) | 00:59:34
Britt Snyder focuses on capturing memories and feelings on canvas. Though influenced by late 19th century impressionism, Britt's paintings are clearly a modern take of impressionistic figurative, still life, and landscape painting. His portrayal of the human figure resembles a character who once inhabited our dreams of the night, and now their features slowly dissolve from our waking memory. His paintings reference classical painting, photography and pop culture with an emphasis on capturing and presenting moments in time and presenting the core essence of the portrayed subject. Just as a film director of a feature film uses the concept of the "wandering eye" in a shot – a view of the actor's eyes without revealing what the actor sees – Britt invokes a similar feeling of curiosity and mystery in his paintings. We want to know what his subject sees and feels. We are left with questions as his figure glances beyond the edge of the canvas. When you view one of Britt Snyder's paintings, you begin to hear in your mind the music of life, and in the periphery of your vision you discern that there is A Sense of Something More. 12 Oct 2018 | Scott Gellatly - Pushing Color (3) | 01:03:26
Scott Gellatly - a landscape artist who currently resides in Portland, Oregon - provides your art lesson today in this episode of the Artful Painter. His landscapes are done both outdoors and in his studio. Luminous, atmospheric, and dimensional - Scott calls his paintings “low-relief sculptures in pigment and color.” In each of his paintings, Scott actively works to push the parameters of the colors on his palette. He pushes colors in unexpected and surprising ways that make his artwork distinctive. When he’s not painting, Scott has perhaps one of the coolest day jobs an artist can have: he is a Product Manager for Gamblin Artists Colors. With Gamblin, Scott has the privilege of traveling around the country teaching artists about colors and painting materials. As a product manager, Scott is actively involved in developing new products for artists at Gamblin. Scott's intimate knowledge of pigments, colors, mediums and substrates coalesce into a celebration of paint – a celebration he generously invites us all to share in. 12 Apr 2020 | Patrick Saunders - No Preconceptions (27) | 01:24:32
Patrick Saunders’ paintings have won many awards and received much recognition. His studio works earned him membership in notable painting organizations, including becoming a signature member of Oil Painters of America. When Patrick began plein air painting in 2013, he won awards from numerous nationally recognized events and organizations. However, whether he paints indoors or outdoors, he does not want to be known by where he paints. He doesn’t want to be known as a plein air painter nor as a studio painter. Rather, he considers himself simply as a painter drawn to many subjects. The subject matter of his paintings include landscapes, cityscapes, animals and pets, and florals. Many of these subjects Patrick discovers along the thousands of miles he and his wife, photographer Kimberly Saunders, travel in their Airstream across the country. Patrick avoids the many sweeping vistas he travels through, preferring to capture the intimate details of life. As he and his wife travel, he searches out the colors, textures, and values of everyday life that are all too often taken for granted. In this episode, Patrick talks about the challenge of overcoming preconceptions about how something should be painted. It requires keen observation of what is before us. Our belief that some subjects are more difficult to paint than others may also be the result of deeply rooted preconceptions. Careful observation, and the willingness to view art making as a series of little mistakes corrected and adjusted throughout our painting session helps us overcome our preconceived notions about painting. Patrick Saunders work clearly demonstrate that he diligently strives to paint with no preconceptions. 18 Jun 2020 | Crista Pisano - Capturing Nature's Grandeur (36) | 01:25:14
Crista Pisano was born and raised in northern New Jersey and began painting in oils in 1989 under the instruction of John Phillip Osborne at the Ridgewood Art Institute in Ridgewood, NJ. Her career as a painter almost didn’t happen because as a young child she had her heart set on being a ballet dancer. At twelve years of age she nixed that idea and decided it wasn’t for her. Crista's mother suggested that she take a look at Bob Ross, you know, the painter on TV. Finding joy in painting, she pursued an education in fine art. Crista graduated from the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts in 2000, receiving a Bachelors Degree of Fine Arts Painting, and in 2003, received a Masters Degree of Fine Arts Painting from the New York Academy Graduate School of Figurative Art. With that solid foundation under her belt, she now paints full time. Aside from participating in various plein air events throughout the year, she exhibits throughout New England and New York. She has received numerous awards and honors, including “Best in Show” at the Adirondack Plein Air Festival in both 2012 and 2014. Crista also won “Honorable Mention” at Plein Air Easton in 2015 and 2016. Plein Air Magazine had included Crista as one of their featured artists in their December/January 2016 issue. Crista paints landscapes – mostly plein air and also in her studio in Nyack, NY. Though she is known for painting on a small scale, she also paints larger works in her studio. In this delightful conversation, Crista shows that her adventures in painting in plein air goes beyond the brush. When she paints, the unexpected may also follows – whether it’s rescuing a baby in a runaway baby carriage or learning about owls from a scary looking biker. Crista takes it all in stride, adding these fantastical stories to her collection of experiences that could only be had from painting outdoors. If you were to chance upon her in the field painting, you would see Crista Pisano passionately capturing nature’s grandeur. 02 Jul 2020 | Bryan Mark Taylor and Keith Huang - Sentient Academy (38) | 00:57:01
Bryan Mark Taylor is no stranger to many outdoor painters. He’s the inventor of the outdoor painting system STRADA Easel. He’s a remarkably versatile painter adept at painting landscapes, urban and architectural scenes, the still life, and highly imaginative scenes with a science fiction flare. Bryan’s deep love of travel moves him to paint evocative images full of mystery, awe, and reverence for the people and landscapes he experiences and carefully observes. Bryan had a chance encounter with another lover of art – Keith Huang – that would lead to another venture. Born and raised in Taiwan, Keith later moved to the United States and studied with fine art portrait painter Del Parson. But then Keith made a dramatic decision to switch from fine arts to accounting. He earned an accounting degree in 2011 and honed his business skills in corporate America. However, his love of art was never far off. Keith and Bryan immediately clicked, and thus was born Sentient Academy. Their vision for Sentient Academy is to bring affordable, top-quality art education to everyone who has the desire to learn. They both want to provide more than just online painting courses. They want to provide a rich community where artists can receive constructive feedback and encouragement. They also want to fill the large void of the lack of art business education that traditional universities, schools, and even other online art education sources neglect. Bryan and Keith hope to be a catalyst for raising up a new generation of amazing artists for the 21st century. 06 Feb 2021 | G. Russell Case - A Higher Perspective (53) | 01:10:41
G. Russell Case is a Western painter inspired by the beauty of creation. Based in Utah, he brings to life the epic landscapes that surround him with a confident voice honed with humility and reverence. His carefully contemplated design incorporates unique vantage points that convey a sense of the smallness of man amidst the vastness of the landscape. The geology of deep canyons, ancient mesas, and towering mountains, and red rock cliffs serve as the setting for a Navaho shepherd and his sheep, or a solitary cowboy mounted upon his horse. The small, nearly insignificant figures and man-made structures that often appear in Russell’s paintings convey a sense of the enormity of the landscape these inhabit. Outdoor painting is vital to Russell’s development as a painter. The play of light and shadow intrigue Russell. Keen attention to natural color allows Russell to express the beauty of the landscape in his own unique voice. He is not interested in literal interpretations of the landscape. Russell’s intent is to create visual poetry that evokes an emotional response within the viewer and draws them deep within the scene. The beauty of G. Russell Case’s paintings is clearly the result of his pursuit of A Higher Perspective. Mentioned in this episode: G. 15 Jul 2021 | Frank Serrano - The Air Between Things (61) | 01:21:50
Frank Serrano's paintings have a sense of atmospheric depth that seem to extend far beyond the two dimensional surface of a canvas. As you look at one of his Western landscape paintings, it's as if you can feel the summer heat enveloping California's Owens Valley. You feel a breeze gently tugging at your soul as you gaze in awe upon the purple glow of the fading light of the setting sun cast upon the immense Eastern Sierras. This is Edgar Payne country. Inspired by Payne as well as artists Sam Hyde Harris, Frank Tenney Johnson, Maynard Dixon and others, Frank's paintings reflect his own developed style filled with incredible passion that beautifully capture the dramatic atmosphere and stunning light that infuses the vast landscape of the West. Frank says that painting on location enriches his life. His paintings do not exist as mere pictures. They are like a cinematic film that stirs your heart with a deep emotional response to the story that unfolds before you of the epic Western landscape and the people who inhabit its vast spaces. Years of outdoor painting has honed Frank's sensitivity to the landscape. Frank Serrano's keen sense of observation and heartfelt emotional response to the Western landscape enable him to paint not only the scene before him, but also The Air Between Things. 06 Apr 2020 | Michael Chamberlain - Forging His Own Way (25) | 01:44:22
Michael Chamberlain says that if Vincent Van Gogh were alive today, he would be a vlogger on YouTube. Van Gogh was a prolific letter writer to an audience of one - his brother Theo. However, as a vlogger on YouTube van Gogh’s message would likely reach hundreds of thousands of fans. As a 21st century California-based impressionist, Michael inspires an audience on YouTube of well over 160,000 subscribers. In his videos, he tries to show the mistakes he makes. He candidly admits that none of the paintings in his videos are gallery ready. Upon returning to his home studio, he tenaciously works out whatever problems they may have until they are ready to hang in a gallery. You know that old adage, “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?” Michael says it isn’t true! He says an old dog has more time and experiences that can make us better students of painting. The key to learning is coming to grips with the rate of failure. Failure is a necessary part of the process. When first starting out learning to paint it’s all too easy to believe in the myth of the genius. Michael admonishes that we can’t allow ourselves to buy into the illusion that professional artists turn out one great painting after another. Indeed, there are many failures in between the good ones. Michael says that the difference between a good painter and a great painter is the ability to say “I’m going to figure this out and I’m going to be tenacious about solving these problems.” And that is exactly what he strives to do: Michael Chamberlain is tenaciously forging his own way. 11 Jun 2019 | Brian Rutenberg - Abstraction is a Process (11) | 00:59:24
Brian Rutenberg’s paintings radiate the atmospheric haze, the shimmering heat, and the rich colors of the Deep South. He describes himself as a “Southern landscape painter living in New York.” Layers and details of the southern landscape have been peeled back in his paintings, leaving us with the dancing lines and shimmering pools of colors of the Carolina coastal wetlands. As I’ve gotten to know Brian through his Studio Visit videos on YouTube, and his book, Clear Seeing Place, I’ve come to expect the unexpected. What you won't hear from Brian are glib, often repeated “feel-good” sound bites we’ve come to expect from motivational books and videos for artists. What you do hear from Brian is his thought provoking unconventional wisdom–a wisdom that has been formulated and brewed in the depths of his mind from experience because day after day, year after year he has simply shown up to do the work of a painter. In this episode, Brian explains what abstraction is. Essentially “all art is abstraction,” according to Brian. However, most of us view it as a style. Brian argues abstraction is not a noun, but instead is a verb. Abstraction is not a style, but, rather, is a process. Using the tools of abstraction Brian seeks out the essence of the Southern landscape. The result are beautiful paintings full movement, color, and atmosphere. Brian Rutenberg is an internationally exhibited painter based in New York City. He was born and raised in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Brian received his bachelor’s degree in fine arts from the College of Charleston in 1987 and his master’s degree from the School of Visual Arts in New York City in 1989. He received an Honorary Doctorate from the College of Charleston in 2018 and delivered the commencement address. Brian is a Fulbright Scholar, a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellow, a Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation studio grant recipient, a Basil Alkazzi USA Award recipient, and an Irish Museum of Modern Art Residency Programme participant. He has had over 250 exhibitions throughout North America and in Europe. His popular Telly Award winning YouTube series, “Brian Rutenberg Studio Visits,” is viewed daily by people all over the world. Brian’s paintings are included in numerous museum collections including Yale University Gallery of Art, Bronx Museum of Art, The Butler Institute of American Art, Provincetown Art Association and Museum, Greenville County Museum of Art, The Johnson Museum at Cornell, Mattatuck Art Museum, Peabody Essex Museum of Art, and many others. Brian’s 2017 book Clear Seeing Place is an Amazon #1 bestseller and was named one of the Best Books of 2017 by Kirkus Reviews. His new monograph A Little Long Time is due out in spring 2020. Brian is represented by Forum Gallery, New York; Jerald Melberg Gallery, Charlotte; LewAllen Gallery, Santa Fe; Nancy Toomey Fine Art, San Francisco; and Tew Galleries, Atlanta. 07 Nov 2018 | Jill Carver - Breaking the Force Field (6) | 01:09:01
Jill Carver - a fine art painter based in Southwest Colorado - paints the landscape with the keen eye of an observer of nature. She paints in order to know the land. Many painters focus on epic, sweeping vistas, stopping short of moving in closer to the subject as if they were held back by an invisible force field. Jill, on the other hand, breaks through that force field and moves the viewer in for a closer, intimate look at what others may pass by without ever noticing. By zooming into the scene, she captures the essence of the place. Up close her paintings take on an abstract quality with rich colors, beautiful brush strokes and textures. As you pull back, her paintings resolve into a scene of contemplative beauty and thoughtfulness. Jill's paintings are a poetic expression of her deep reverence for nature and the landscape. As he applies each stroke of color – whether he is using pastels or oil paint – he intimately captures the textures of the landscape. 01 Apr 2020 | George Van Hook - Truth and Honesty in Art (24) | 01:15:43
George Van Hook is a painter adept in both oil and watercolor. What he paints is a visual response to the subject before him – whether it’s the landscape, a figure, or still life. The rich textures, harmonious colors, and design of Van Hook’s paintings are the ultimate expression of two converging forces – the external beauty of the world around him and his deep internal emotional response to what he sees. George Van Hook lives in Cambridge, New York – a beautiful nineteenth-century village in the Hudson Valley. His artistic journey began early in his life, and like Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, it took him through many formative experiences and places that influenced him to become the fine art artist he is today. In high school, he traveled throughout France and England working as a filmmaker. This experience exposed George to the wealth of museums in Europe and their priceless treasures of fine art. Seeing firsthand the breathtaking art in these museums nurtured within him a deep interest in not only art history but also in becoming a professional artist. In this exuberant conversation, George Van Hook shares his fascinating take on art history, his philosophy of creating fine art, the rewards of working closely with artist friends who are dear to him, and the meaning of truth and honesty in art. 28 Jan 2022 | Mitchell Albala - Mystery and Atmosphere (66) | 01:40:43
Mitchell Albala is a fine art painter, noted author, and beloved workshop instructor. His first book, Landscape Painting: Essential Concepts and Techniques for Plein Air and Studio Practice, is a well-worn reference in my personal library since 2009 when it was first published. Mitchell now has an exciting new book available, The Landscape Painter's Workbook: Essential Studies in Shape, Composition, and Color. When I received this book a couple of months ago and read it, I knew this would also be a treasured – and much used – volume in my library. This is a one-and-a-half-hour-long episode and it's much like taking a mini-workshop from Mitchell. For example, In this edition of the Artful Painter, some of the topics Mitchell covers include:
In addition to Mitchell's love of teaching, he is also an accomplished fine art painter. His work is driven by three visual imperatives: the inherent abstraction within nature, pattern, and unified light. The landscape is an ideal subject with which to pursue his interest. Mitchell Albala's mastery of these visual imperatives is evident in his beautiful, evocative paintings that are filled with Mystery and Atmosphere. 11 Feb 2020 | Victoria Taylor-Gore - Quiet Surrealism (22) | 01:11:29
Victoria Taylor-Gore's surrealistic, luminous paintings are imaginary places at the boundary of twilight and dreams. Seemingly devoid of people, her paintings pull you into their quiet mystery. Her paintings fill your mind with questions: Who opened the motel room door? Who left the suitcase by the neatly made bed? Who is in the car whose lit headlamp spills light through the open door of the motel? Where is this lonely motel? Where did the people go? Have they just arrived? Or, are they getting ready to depart? It appears that the inhabitant of the room has just stepped out of sight. Or, have they? Then you realize that perhaps you are the inhabitant of that room. You've become a part of Victoria’s painting and its mystery. Victoria, who recently retired as the dean of liberal arts at Amarillo College, now devotes herself full-time to creating pastel and mixed-media paintings inspired by her love of film noir, the landscape of the high plains, and Route 66. Her use of exaggerated perspective creates a sense of unease and suspense. The open doors and windows invite movement between intimate interiors and dark, open exteriors – heightening your curiosity as to what lies either beyond or within. Her unique visual vocabulary is beautifully expressed in her evocative paintings of Quiet Surrealism. I recently saw Victoria Taylor-Gore mentioned in Southwest Art magazine article. It was an exciting reminder of a conversation I had with her about ten years ago when I interviewed Victoria in a filmmaking and photography podcast I used to produce. At that time, a revolution in photography and video had appeared seemingly out of nowhere that allowed creators to produce high definition video of stunning cinematic quality with affordable digital DSLR cameras. It was an exciting development that encouraged creative experimentation. Victoria was an early adopter of this new video technology. She began experimenting with making videos using her collection of vintage toy cars, dollhouses, and figurines. Having seen her work, I invited her to be interviewed in that early podcast. In that first conversation, I learned that Victoria was inspired by film noir, surrealist artist Giorgio de Chirico, and filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock. Ten years later that inspiration continues to influence her art. 26 May 2020 | Jill Steenhuis - Dance With Nature (34) | 01:10:42
Jill Steenhuis is an American Impressionist painter – originally from Atlanta, Georgia, who now lives in Aix-en-Provence, France. It’s been her home for over three decades. Her unexpected journey there is a fascinating story. When she was just eight years old, her mother died. Her mother’s death left an enormous void in her life. Being creative helped fill part of that void. When Jill turned sixteen, her father gave her a book of the paintings of Paul Cézanne. At first, she was disappointed in getting the book. Like many young teens, she had hoped for a car. However, with the gentle encouragement of her father she began to appreciate the beautiful paintings within. The inspiration from that book began an extraordinary journey that leads to her living in Aix-en-Provence in France, falling in love with a young Frenchman, studying at The Leo Marchutz School of Painting and Drawing, and following Cézanne’s footsteps to his studio at Chateau Noir, and Mont Sainte-Victoire. Jill’s paintings are vibrant and colorful. Her loose brushstrokes invite the viewer into an intimate dance. Most of her paintings are created outdoors – en plein air. Each painting session begins with a warm-up: she carefully prepares and lays out her colors on a large, white palette that she likens to a piano. Using her “unlimited palette” of colors, she has access to all 88 keys of the piano. With a large canvas set in place on her easel, her eye seeks out the nature that surrounds her. And then, she lifts up a paintbrush and without hesitation, Jill Steenhuis begins her exuberant Dance with Nature. 12 Jul 2022 | Kami Mendlik - Surrender to the Process (72) | 01:11:49
Kami Mendlik’s exquisite landscape paintings shimmer and vibrate with animated light and color. Her life-long journey of curiosity and keen observation of the natural world began when she was a young child. The Minnesota farmland she grew up on was fertile not just for crops, but also for a young mind curious about the wonders of the land that was her home. She was entranced by the beauty of nature's rhythm and harmony and its myriad colors. Kami thinks of herself as a lifelong student. Each seeming advance of knowledge leads to more questions and a never-ending quest to answer them in her paintings. Her passion is the study of color. However, she does not keep what she learns to herself. Over the years she has taught well over 1,000 students a process to help achieve the illusion of light and vibration in their paintings. Over ten years in the making, she has codified the lessons she has learned about color in a new book titled: Color Relativity–Creating the Illusion of Light With Paint. This gorgeous new book is due to be released towards the end of the summer of 2022. In this episode, Kami reveals that she has struggled with dyslexia. However, the challenge of dyslexia did not prevent her from developing a deep love of books, and the writing of Color Relativity. She opens up about what is involved in creating, editing, and publishing a quality art book. If you were to observe Kami Mendlik painting outdoors or in her studio, just as she begins to make her colors dance, you might see a smile flicker upon her face, a slight inhale of a calming breath, and, then, with quiet abandon see her Surrender to the Process. 16 Aug 2020 | TJ Cunningham - The Wonder of Being in the Landscape (41) | 01:32:00
TJ Cunningham grew up in Vermont in an area that was also a favorite place for Aldro Hibbard and Emile Gruppé to paint. If you have ever visited that part of Vermont as my wife and I did a few years ago, you probably call to mind the beautiful hills, mountains, woods, and streams. And nestled snuggly in that beautiful setting are the small farms graced with red barns and cozy homes that beckon to a simpler time. Just as Hibbard and Gruppé found inspiration among this landscape, so does TJ Cunningham. Though he no longer lives in Vermont, the intense desire to capture the beauty of the landscape continues to burn in his heart. I first met TJ Cunningham back in January of this year at the Booth Western Art Museum. He was one of the exhibiting artists of Plein Air Painters of the Southeast that was on display at that time at the Booth. On exhibit there was a hauntingly beautiful and moody painting by Cunningham called Near the Beaver Pond. On seeing that one painting, I knew I had to meet TJ and eventually have him on the Artful Painter. In this edition of the Artful Painter, TJ talks about what he drawn to paint, the importance of preparation before painting, and the unique tools and materials he uses. He discusses how outdoor painting is part of the preparation process. We also talk about his transition from gallery representation to his now being 100% self-representing in his home studio and his beautiful website. TJ was featured in the September 2014 issue of Southwest Art magazine in the series 21 Under 31: Young Artists to Watch in 2014. How true that admonition was, for today TJ’s paintings are an impressionistic tour-de-force. When you examine his paintings up close, you get a sense that TJ relishes not only a beautiful scene, but also the act of making the painting. In many ways looking at the surface of his paintings it’s not clear just how he made those gorgeous marks and textures. Using a variety of mark-making tools, he leaves a compelling mystery for the viewer to ponder. Each painting by TJ Cunningham exudes the wonder of being in the landscape. 13 Jan 2020 | Anne Blair Brown - Inspired by Light (19) | 01:27:52
Anne Blair Brown describes herself as a contemporary impressionist. She is drawn to impressionism because it is an interpretation of a moment in time. Light is the subject of her paintings. The light that imbues her paintings radiates a feeling of warmth. Light glows in an open doorway, shadows accentuate warm afternoon sunlight, and, dapples of light dance upon a picnic table in the summer shade of an old oak tree. Anne's play of light is found in her rural and urban landscapes, her figurative work, and her intimate interior spaces. As you peer into Anne’s paintings, you begin to sense it as if it were your own memory. Her broken brushstrokes begin a story that only you as the viewer can complete. The sense of place and memory Anne suggests in her beautiful paintings becomes your story. In this edition of the Artful Painter, Anne freely shares her thoughts on her process of creating light-filled, impressionistic paintings. She talks about her joy of teaching and how we as students can most benefit from artist workshops and training. Anne discusses, too, her experiences with showing her work in galleries. Get out your pen and notebook and prepare to take notes! Other artists have told me that I need to talk to Anne Blair Brown. I’m glad I took their advice! 06 Aug 2020 | John Pototschnik - Paintings That Speak to the Heart (40) | 01:03:05
John Pototschnik is a fine art painter who resides in Wylie, Texas. As a young boy, his parents instilled in him a strong work ethic. Doing chores, selling his mother’s cookies door-to-door, and having a newspaper route – all these experiences would lay the foundation for how John approaches the work of being a professional artist today. He began his professional career as an illustrator. The discipline of meeting deadlines, and being attuned to a client’s needs further honed his creative skills. After ten years of working as an illustrator, John made the leap to working full-time as a fine art painter. However, that leap did not come without challenges. For example, in order to overcome the tendency towards using highly saturated colors common to illustration work, John dove into an intense period of experimentation with color. In time, that experimentation led to using a limited palette. Mastering the limited palette proved to be key in achieving beautiful paintings with high dynamic range and expressive color that John is known for. Today, students rave about John's color workshops. You may recall in a previous episode of the Artful Painter that Amanda Lovett shared how attending John’s color workshop was transformative to her. John recently wrote a book about color for artists: Limited Palette, Unlimited Color – which also has a companion instructional video. John's paintings may bring to the viewer’s mind childhood memories, but that is not necessarily his primary intent. His desire is to create something beautiful that draws people in. He considers himself primarily a landscape painter. He loves small-town neighborhoods and the atmosphere found in those neighborhoods. He captures the beauty of those small towns and rural landscapes – both outdoors and in his studio. John Pototschnik's mastery of color and values – all using a limited palette – lead to beautifully harmonious paintings that speak to the heart. 22 Dec 2020 | Oberg, Smith, Whitcomb, and Young - Four Directions - Common Paths (50) | 01:31:15
Gàbor Svagrik presents Ralph Oberg, Matt Smith, Skip Whitcomb, and Dan Young in Four Directions - Common Paths. The Artful Painter has reached a new milestone: this is episode number 50. The first episode was published a little over two years ago in September of 2018 featuring artist Ralph Oberg. The idea to do this show began to form after I attended a week-long event sponsored by the Booth Museum in Cartersville and Plein Air Painters of America. I participated in two workshops during that PAPA event conducted by Matt Smith and Ralph Oberg. I also attended lectures given by Len Chmiel, Skip Whitcomb, Dan Young, and Jill Carver. It was a truly transformative event for me. It’s only fitting that In this episode I return to this show’s roots by featuring a delightful and inspiring conversation between four friends: Ralph Oberg, Matt Smith, Skip Whitcomb, and Dan Young. The conversation was recorded by Gàbor Svagrik - who also was an early guest of the Artful Painter. Gàbor and I reconnect and talk about his experience filming these four friends. I’m indebted to Gàbor for allowing me to share this conversation with Artful Painter listeners. Gàbor’s film also coincides with a special exhibition being held at the Steamboat Art Museum in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The show title is Four Directions - Common Paths: Friendship, Inspiration, and Craft - A Thirty Year Connection. The show runs from December 4, 202o through April 10, 2021. It features 25 works each from Ralph Oberg, Matt Smith, Skip Whitcomb, and Dan Young. 17 Mar 2022 | Brian Buckrell - Freedom to Play (67) | 01:50:07
Brian Buckrell is a full-time Canadian painter. After a long, successful career as a Professor of Veterinary Medicine, he made the decision to switch to a career doing one of the hardest things known to humankind: painting fine art. The transition wasn’t easy - especially doing so much later in life while in his sixties. He admits there were times he felt like quitting. However, he stuck with it. Brian doggedly continued developing his painting skills. Recognizing the importance of learning the fundamentals of the craft, he attended many workshops and enrolled full-time at the highly acclaimed Jeff Watts Atelier. Buckrell’s determination and dedication to the craft finally paid off. Today, despite challenging health issues that both he and his wife, Cathy, have to deal with, he enthusiastically creates bold, beautiful, expressive paintings of the great outdoors that they so much enjoy together. Because of the joy viewers experience in seeing his art, Brian’s colorful paintings grace the homes of many collectors around the world. Acrylic is Brian’s medium of choice. Modern innovations and developments in acrylic paint provide an exciting medium and playground for Brian to explore and experiment. It allows him to paint quickly what he loves to paint in the way he wants to paint. And, most of all – have fun! Now in his late seventies, Brian Buckrell proves that it’s never too late to paint and have the Freedom to Play. 08 Dec 2020 | Paul Foropoulos - Painting Along Life's Path (49) | 02:14:18
Paul Foropoulos is a Greek artist born on the tiny, beautiful island of Samos, Greece. Today, he and his wife divide their time between their home in Clearwater, Florida, and Samos, Greece. Not only does he paint, but he is also a sculptor, he designs jewelry, and he teaches art classes in his own fine art studio classroom. Paul is an avid scuba diver and loves to paint the extraordinary underwater views he sees while diving. His large underwater oil paintings mesmerize the viewer with a mix of bold and subtle colors depicting the rich variety of sea life enchantingly illuminated by sunlight filtered through water. Paul’s subject matter is not limited to underwater scenes. He exuberantly wields his brushes, knives, and oil paints to create vibrant, colorful contemporary, urban, figurative, seascape, and landscape paintings. My wife and I met Paul Foropoulos and his wife, Dina, when we traveled to Greece last year with another couple. Paul kindly made arrangements for us to stay on his home-island of Samos. It’s a quiet, enchanting island devoid of crowds of tourists. As we dined on fabulous Greek food, we learned of Paul’s remarkable journey to become an artist. It’s a journey that took him from his quaint island home of Samos, to the big city of Athens, and then to Lebanon and beyond. Today, I’m glad to have the privilege of sharing with you Paul Foropoulos’ inspirational story of painting along life’s path. 04 Dec 2019 | Michelle Jung - Creating From Memory (16) | 01:49:20
Michelle Jung – methodical and keenly observant – creates expressive oil and mixed-media paintings that speak to the heart. When you first walk into a room with her paintings displayed on a wall you may see an expansive seascape, an intimate floral scene, or a quiet landscape. As you move in closer to her paintings, what was once clearly in focus begins to melt and break apart into gorgeous abstraction. Her painting process begins with thoughtful slowness. She then moves in quickly with her brushes and puts down deliberate, confident strokes of paint. Layer by layer she builds her painting. The result is an impressionistic portal into a world of light and dark, intriguing abstraction, and multiple planes of perspective that arrests our eyes and profoundly stirs our innermost emotions. As you stand before one of Michelle’s seascapes, you not only see the waves roll in and break upon the rocky shore – you hear the crash of the waves and smell the salt in the air. Though Michelle’s interest in art goes back to her childhood, it wasn’t until she turned 40 years old that she started painting. Long before starting painting, Michelle received her bachelor’s degree in art history from the Colorado State University. For a time she worked in several art galleries. That experience led to her gaining solid skills selling art. Later, she honed her business acumen when she started and managed an insurance agency. However, her love of art began to assert itself - she keenly wanted to learn how to paint. She began taking workshops from accomplished representational artists. At age 47, Michelle returned to school to earn her MFA in painting. She consistently practiced painting outside and in her studio. The result? Michelle Jung is an award-winning oil painter whose work has been exhibited in a number of group exhibitions and shows. She is a signature member of the American Society of Marine Artists as well as the California Art Club. She is also a member of the Salmagundi Club and The Guild of Boston Artists. Her example shows it’s never too late to start painting! In this episode, Michelle explains her process of painting and how deep observation, along with outdoor painting and sketching, form the foundation for painting from memory her larger studio works. In our conversation, she talks about her thoughts on composition, shares information on the materials she uses and experiments with, and reveals the surprising reason for her choice of aspect ratios of her paintings. She also shares with us her unique approach to marketing her art and brand. Michelle is not only an accomplished painter, she is also a collector of fine art. Now that’s someone who truly loves art! 27 Dec 2019 | Bill Farnsworth - The Story Within a Story (18) | 01:33:40
Bill Farnsworth, a fine art artist and illustrator residing in Venice, Florida, likes to start a story in his paintings, and let the viewer finish it. Imagine this scene: Your feet are tired from walking the beautiful streets of the Mediterranean island of Elba. Your palette is thirsty. Just ahead you see bright umbrellas signal the presence of a small street cafe. You decide it’s time to enjoy a refreshing drink under the cool shade of the cafe umbrellas while you rest your feet. As you approach to claim your seat - though you cannot see them - within the doors of the tiny cafe, workers clean and tidy up its cramped interior. You hear the sounds of clinks and clatter as they replenish and stock the pantry and refrigerator with the latest goods that arrived just before you eyed the cafe and decided to stop there. For just a moment you imagine you have lived here all your life. It is this story within a story that artist Bill Farnsworth seeks to imbue within his oil paintings. As a 1980 graduate of The Ringling School of Art and Design, Bill Farnsworth has spent more than 34 years as an Illustrator and Fine Artist. Born in Norwalk Connecticut in 1958, Bill spent most of his life painting landscapes of rural areas, while supporting himself and family as an illustrator. He has illustrated more than fifty books for children. Bill's extensive illustration experience provides a rich vocabulary for creating his beautiful, emotion-filled fine art paintings. He is a Signature member of The Oil Painters of America, and The American Society of Impressionists. He is also a Fellow in The American Society of Marine Artists. Bill is also an active member of Plein Air Painters of the SouthEast - having served a stint as its President. In our conversation today, Bill explains how he endeavors to paint what he loves and to convey that honestly so that viewer can feel it as well. Bill talks in-depth about the importance of painting on location and the importance of being a keen observer of the scene and life that happens in that place. The result? Heartfelt paintings emerge that are full of emotion. 12 Feb 2019 | Gregory Packard - An American Impressionist (8) | 01:06:03
Gregory Packard is an American impressionist painter. His paintings celebrate both the medium - colorful, richly textured oil paint - and the subject. He likens impressionistic painting to capturing a fleeting moment in time. The emotion of that moment and the scene are lyrically and poetically frozen in time with Gregory's expressive brushwork. His work invokes an involuntary, visceral response from viewers. Gregory is drawn to impressionistic painting in part because of the extraordinary range of colors that can be used to represent the subject of the painting. He believes people are drawn to impressionistic paintings because they allow the viewer to inject their own meaning. The quality of oil paint draws Gregory into a painting. He loves thick paint and the textures that can be created. Gregory loves the duality of a beautiful impressionistic painting - the intriguing abstract quality of paint viewed up close and the and the joy of seeing the subject of the painting resolve itself when you pull back. Gregory’s journey into art began with drawing. He says his tightly rendered, realistic drawing skills that he developed early now contributes to his ability to paint very loosely. To paint a subject matter well, Gregory first tries to feel it. His approach to painting is intuitive. He paints from life, but also uses photographic references – with thoughtful awareness of their limitations and pitfalls. Greg is not to a slave to the photograph nor to the subject itself. These merely suggest what could be in a painting. His intuition and emotional response to the subject is key to the development of a painting. Though he had dabbled with oil painting in the past - including taking a few painting classes in college - it wasn’t until later that Gregory would pursue art as a career. As improbably as it may seem, the turning point was a chance encounter of entering a gallery in Boise, Idaho, to kill time while waiting for a work meeting. Gregory saw the stunning artwork of artist Robert Moore and fell in love with his work. He immediately signed up to attend a workshop conducted by Robert Moore. On the heals of that workshop, he attended yet another workshop - this time conducted by Delbert Gish. There was no turning back. At that moment Gregory decided he was going to be a professional fine art painter. It took about five years or so of hard work and dedication to accomplish his dream of finally making a living as an artist. I was introduced to Greg by artist Ralph Oberg who I had met up when my wife and I visited our daughter and son-in-law in Montrose, Colorado. Ralph told me about Greg and suggested that I invite him to be a guest on the Artful Painter podcast because “he’s really good.” Ralph invited me and my family to visit an annual show at a small gallery in Montrose called the Cimarron Song Gallery. The gallery is owned and operated by Gregory. Gregory and his wife bought a 100 year old building that was lying derelict, gutted it, and transformed it into a warm, inviting place to showcase his art. Cimarron Song Gallery also displays the works of other artists currently including Ralph Oberg, Shirley Novak, and Julee Hutchison. We loved the gallery and it was there that I met Gregory and his wife. We were blown away by his beautiful paintings. Ralph was right when he declared, “he is really good.” This episode of the Artful Painter is Gregory Packard’s inspiring story. 24 Jul 2020 | DK Palecek - Painting Curiosity (39) | 01:03:47
DK Palecek is a painter who embraces her left-brain-centric worldview. Starting with degrees in both Math and Finance, she worked as a mathematician, served as an investment banker, became a venture capitalist, and is a serial entrepreneur. In that career trajectory, painting fine art was the farthest thing from her logical, left-brain mind. And yet, she was smitten by the beauty of fine art. About ten years ago she began painting outside and in the studio. It wasn’t long until she was on the plein air painting circuit, represented in several galleries, became a member of several painting societies, and began teaching workshops. Deke, as she is known by her painting friends, became fascinated with brain science and the power and plasticity of the brain. In this edition of the Artful Painter, Deke discusses the implication of brain science for artists seeking to improve their painting skills. She talks about the importance of setting specific goals and turn those goals into specific actions that lead to learning new skills. Deke warns of the perils of the mental-energy sapping act of indecisiveness. An artist must decide and focus on executing that decision. Of course, Deke is not all left-brain. Her expressive paintings captures the beauty of everyday scenes. Deke’s left brain and right brain unite together in an exuberant collaboration of painting curiosity.

10 Apr 2020 | Matt Ryder - A Clear Vision (26) | 01:23:14
Matt Ryder is an award-winning British artist living and working in Dubai of the United Arab Emirates. Matt finds inspiration in the wild beauty of the natural world – whether it’s land, sea, or sky. It’s astonishing that there are still wild places left in the world that have not been painted. That’s the unique situation Matt finds himself in where he lives in the Middle East. Matt takes advantage of the cooler seasons to paint outdoors among the majestic mountains where few people live. Inspired by John Singer Sargent’s landscape paintings - The Moraine and Simplon Pass – Matt strives to capture the feel of the rugged, boulder-filled landscape before him. Braving desert heat, enduring “you shouldn’t be here” looks from people in rare encounters, and bemused by camels curious about what he is doing – these are all in a day’s plein air painting session with Matt Ryder. Before these isolated landscapes change and are lost forever, Matt is on a mission to capture with oil paint the extraordinary, rugged beauty of these wild lands unseen by most of us. Matt Ryder is truly an enthusiastic painter, earnestly painting these wondrous and mysterious landscapes with a clear vision. 24 Nov 2020 | Stephen C. Datz - The Rhythm and Geometry of Nature (48) | 01:36:22
Stephen C. Datz paints the American Western landscape in his own clear voice. Strong, angular design, rich harmonious colors, and a striking interpretation of the landscape are hallmarks of Stephen’s style. It took hard work and determination on his part to get here. In this episode, Stephen talks about how his unique voice developed. He was frustrated by how unprepared he was to make a living in fine art after earning a BFA from Colorado State University. He flailed for a few difficult years as he tried to figure out how to thrive as a fine art painter. Stephen’s father encouraged him to take a workshop from artist Skip Whitcomb. It was just what he needed. That workshop opened his eyes to the value of painting outdoors and gave him access to real-world, practical business advice. But there was a problem. In seeking gallery representation, one gallery owner made a frank observation about Stephen’s work: his work was derivative, looking much like the paintings of his workshop instructors. Rather than be dismayed by the criticism, Stephen viewed it as an encouragement to allow his artistic voice to emerge with confidence. He made the determination to be true to himself and his vision. The result? A stunning body of work that is truly unique. And, galleries – including Mark Sublette’s Medicine Man Gallery – took note. Stephen’s love of the landscape remains strong. He frequently explores the western landscape near his home in Grand Junction, Colorado, with his plein air gear. If you are hiking deep in the high desert and red rock country of Colorado and Utah, it's possible you might just get a dazzling glimpse of Stephen C. Datz painting the rhythm and geometry of nature. 18 Apr 2020 | Nancy Tankersley - Geometry of Shapes (28) | 01:11:23
Nancy Tankersly approaches painting with experimentation and curiosity. The results are impressionistic paintings that are not so much about the subject as it is about shapes. Her fascination with shapes perhaps began when she excelled in geometry in school. She began her painting career as a portrait painter. However, Nancy's inquisitive and experimental nature compelled her to branch out. Today she finds beautiful shapes to paint in the landscape, figure, and still life. She uses non-traditional tools, supports, and technology to express her impressionistic style. When Nancy and her husband moved to Easton, Maryland, several years ago, she founded her own gallery and co-founded Easton Plein Air – considered one the premier annual plein air events in the world. Today, Nancy enjoys the rhythm of teaching, working in her studio, painting outside. Nancy is one of three judges invited to the 6th Annual Olmsted Plein Air Invitational - serving alongside Leslie Lobell and Chris Garvin. In this episode, she candidly talks about the judging process and offers helpful advice to artists who participate in competitions. Nancy talks about the importance of getting to know who you are as an artist. She explains that experimentation is the key to the growth of an artist - a quest she continues to this day. Nancy Tankersly’s paintings expressively convey feeling, each securely anchored by the rich, beautiful poetry of the underlying geometry of shapes. 25 Jun 2020 | Amanda Lovett - Telling a Story With a Brush (37) | 01:00:46
Amanda Lovett says she "grew up in a family of storytellers; people who could take a moment in time and make it come to life using words.” She says, "It didn't take me long to realize that this trait is a part of my genetic code as well. I too tell stories, only I use paint, light and shape to bring them to life. It's about being in the moment, breaking down what I see and giving my brush a chance to speak.” When you closely observe Amanda's paintings, each one appears to tell a story - one that allows you to step inside and participate in. Amanda’s art education led to a career in advertising and she landed her first role as an art director at the young age of 19. Quick to absorb the lessons from her experience as an art director, she soon opened her own advertising agency in Atlanta. However, the responsibilities of running an advertising company left little time for her to be hands-on with art making. In 1998, she attended a watercolor class with Frank Broadhurst. It was a defining moment for her as she resolved to become a fine art painter. In 2004 she switched to painting with oils, and, gaining confidence in her abilities, she made the leap to becoming a full-time painter. Amanda has followed her own way as a painter. She ignores the advice that a fine art painter should stick to one genre or subject matter. She is comfortable painting the landscape, westerns, animals, people, a still life, water, buildings, urban or country scenes, airplanes, trains, cars and trucks, or live events. She is now a signature member of the Oil Painters of America, and she teaches several workshops to help other artists improve their craft. Wherever you find Amanda Lovett painting - whether in her studio or on location outdoors - you find her telling a story with a brush. 29 Aug 2020 | Bill Anton - A Passion for Painting the West (43) | 01:51:11
Bill Anton was the first professional painter I ever met. It was a chance encounter. In the late 1990’s my family and I were vacationing in Jackson, Wyoming. One evening I decided to walk into one of the several art galleries that lined the square. It was intimidating, as I had never set foot in an art gallery before. As my eyes adjusted to the interior lighting of Trailside Gallery, I became enthralled at the dozens of paintings hanging in the gallery depicting Western scenes. Only two people were in the gallery when I took my first timid steps into it. One person was a woman working for Trailside. And the other person was man wearing a black cowboy hat. The woman greeted me and explained that the paintings before me were by an artist named Bill Anton. I told her I didn’t know who he was. So, she offered, “Let me introduce you to him.” She led me to the man wearing the cowboy hat and said: “This is Bill Anton." I don’t remember what I was said at the time, but I do remember his kindness towards me - a rookie who knew next to nothing about art! After that brief encounter with Bill I spent the next couple of hours closely examining each of his extraordinary paintings. It was a transformative moment for me. It was at that moment that I decided I wanted to be able to paint like this one day. Indeed Bill’s remarkable paintings of the Western landscape, the equine figure, and the human figure are without equal. There’s a cinematic feel to his paintings. Bill's focus when painting is not about technical execution, but, rather, about mood and passion. The visual poetry of his paintings profoundly affect you as a viewer. It’s a visceral feeling - one I well remember that evening walking into Trailside Gallery - even though it’s been over twenty years ago. You are drawn in to sit by a warmly glowing campfire. You feel the chill of the high desert air set in as the sun casts its last rays upon the distant peaks. You hear the snorts and neighing of the horses and the stamping of their feet. The smell of dust and musk from a long day’s ride linger in your nostrils. You see it, you smell it, you feel it. And that’s just the way Bill Anton wants it. Each painting demonstrates his deep seated passion for painting the west. 31 Dec 2020 | Kyle Buckland - Making a Difference (52) | 01:19:21
Kyle Buckland's bold paintings are deeply rooted in the philosophy and approach of the impressionists. As a teenager, his interest in art began to edge out the interests of most youth - skateboarding, team sports, or playing in a band. He became an art nerd in high school, using every available moment to devour the small selection of art books found in his school library. He didn’t just read books, though. He went outside and painted. And painted. And painted. That hard work paid off. Kyle has won many awards for his impressionistic paintings. His work is represented in hundreds of private, public, and corporate collections around the world. His paintings are filled with rich colors and luxurious brushwork. Surprisingly, some of his largest works are painted outdoors! Kyle captures the experience of painting outside on his inspirational YouTube channel he calls The Artful Souls. There you can watch him paint on canvases measuring up to 48 by 48 inches. Kyle now resides in a small nineteenth-century farmhouse/studio in Abingdon, Virginia, with his lovely wife, Jennifer. However, if you knock on his door, you likely won’t find him home. He’s probably painting either out back in his stand-alone studio or somewhere out in the beautiful Virginia countryside. One thing is for sure: wherever you find Kyle Buckland, whether he’s painting outdoors or in his studio, or teaching a class of eager students, you can be certain he is making a difference. 12 Jun 2019 | Len Chmiel - An Authentic Nature (12) | 01:39:27
Len Chmiel’s evocative paintings push the boundaries of realism, while preserving the beauty of the landscape and infusing it with palpable emotion. Chmiel makes his home in Hotchkiss, Colorado, where he not only paints, but also gardens, tends his vineyard and makes wine. Gardening profoundly affects his art. He has a strong yearning to get his fingers into the dirt. Nurturing a living thing from a tiny seed and watch it grow into a beautiful plant stirs such a deep emotional response within him. To Chmiel, gardening encourages optimism. If a plant fails this season, then perhaps in the next season he can do better. He finds the same is true with painting. At first a concept for a painting may not work. However, seeing it through may reward the painter with a painting that captures the essence of his subject and move him to tears. In this episode of the Artful Painter, Chmiel explains that successful paintings start with a clear concept and good design. He talks about the importance of painting on the spot and how doing so forms a connection with the place and subject - connections and memories that still inform larger works completed in the studio years later. Len Chmiel does not like to call himself an artist - he prefers to call himself a painter. Many artists who I have spoken with agree that Len Chmiel is one of the finest painters – yes, one of the finest artists – in America today. I’m glad to be able to share with you this conversation. 22 Jan 2022 | Ariana Richards - Poetic Realism (65) | 01:00:04
Ariana Richards delights in expressing her creativity in both painting and acting. Encouraged by her family at an early age, she developed an intense interest in the arts. She developed her painting skills even though as a young child she was busy acting. Ariana has appeared in over 30 movies and television shows – including portraying the young computer wizard Lex in Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park. She went on to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts and Drama at Skidmore College. Her painting skills earned her the honor of being one of the youngest artists to become a member of the California Art Club. She is also a member of the Portrait Society of America. Ariana's creative roots in the arts can be traced to one of her early ancestors: Renaissance painter Carlo Crivelli who lived during the 1400s. With a deep respect for the old masters and a keen appreciation of the Impressionists, Ariana has developed her own sensitive, expressive voice that is an amalgamation of both worlds. Her beautiful portraits gently capture a fleeting gesture of the subject. Her landscapes and seascapes encapsulate the beauty and light of a moment in time. The gorgeous result of Ariana Richard's finely honed creative voice is Poetic Realism. 20 Apr 2020 | Jonathan McPhillips - Capturing the Presence of Man (29) | 01:31:25
Jonathan McPhillips’ paintings shimmer with atmosphere and sparkle with light. Each painting he creates he views as a welcome problem to solve, a delightful puzzle to piece together, and a celebration of his surroundings. Working equally in the studio and on location, his work includes the harbors, beaches, vessels, and architecture of the coastal marine environment of New England including his home in Rhode Island. Chasing the ever changing light and air drives Jonathan to paint. The perception of atmosphere viewers sense in his paintings is the result of his impressionistic style, tempered by a touch of realism and draftsmanship. Whether he paints indoors or outdoors his method of painting is similar. In this edition of the Artful Painter, Jonathan shares his multifaceted approach to painting. He relates how his early art education that focused on modern art influenced his work in a positive way. Jonathan encourages artists to take advantage of technology to promote their work. He candidly talks about working with galleries and that he views his relationship with galleries as a partnership. Jonathan teaches a number of workshops and explains his approach to teaching and how artists can best benefit from the experience. When faced with a myriad of choices in painting, Jonathan reveals he is drawn to scenes that show man’s intervention in the landscape. Indeed, as you peer into Jonathan McPhillips' paintings, you see a story only partially shown, perhaps suggesting a mystery, and capturing the presence of man. 22 May 2021 | Eric Bowman - Following a Circuitous Path (58) | 02:22:38
Eric Bowman could never have imagined the path his life would take for him to become a fine art painter. He wanted to go to art school but the prospect of spending two years in a junior college taking courses that had nothing to do with art - well, that was something he couldn't stomach. And so began a surprising journey with many side trips and destination stops and the serendipitous meeting of people who would forever shape the way he creates art today. In this edition of the Artful Painter, Eric talks about his choice of subject to paint: often a solitary figure or two situated in a vast, cinematic landscape. He talks about his Quonset studio, his design and painting processes, and tells us about the unexpected encounters with people who would influence his path to painting fine art. As you listen to his remarkable journey on becoming a painter, you will be enthralled by Eric Bowman Following a Circuitous Path. 26 Apr 2020 | Kyle Ma - Keeping an Open Mind (030) | 00:51:00
Kyle Ma is an extraordinary artist and a student of geology. His keen observation skills are honed by his geoscience training at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas. Whether he paints the figure, the landscape, or florals, his confident brush work and solid drawing skills expertly express his emotional response to what he sees. Kyle believes inspiration can truly be pulled from anything or anywhere. In this inspiring conversation with Kyle, I was profoundly impressed with his humility. He has studied with some of the finest artists in the world. Though he would not personally admit this, he is easily their peer. Kyle candidly admits to feelings of inadequacy after taking workshops, wondering afterwards if he is even a good painter. Determined and disciplined, he doesn’t let doubt stop him. He has a quiet confidence in his approach to painting. He thoughtfully considers the lessons he has learned, picks up his brush, and carefully considers each stroke before committing it to his canvas. Whatever the subject is, he is passionate about painting it as he feels it. Whether he paints outdoors or inside, Kyle Ma is resolved to keeping an open mind. 08 Jun 2021 | Denise LaRue Mahlke - A Sense of Peace (59) | 01:01:01
Denise LaRue Mahlke paints with soft pastels - which are to her the purest form of artist color. Unfettered with complicated materials, she is free to respond spontaneously to the unfolding spectacle of the big skies and ancient geology of the American West. I first saw her beautiful, atmospheric pastel works of art in person at the Booth Museum. It was at a show called Painting Red Rocks Country, Past and Present. Her work was displayed alongside the works of G. Russell Case, Matt Smith, and Ray Roberts. Denise says “Painting allows me to communicate the celebratory beauty of God’s creation.” As we view Denise Mahlke’s sensitive paintings, we cannot help but be touched by her deep reverence. The result: we are rewarded with a sense of peace. 02 Apr 2019 | Christine Lashley - Painting From Memory (9) | 01:51:26
Christine Lashley is a contemporary impressionist painter whose works have been exhibited nationally and internationally, winning many First Place awards for both landscape and figurative work. One such award she received is the 2018 Best Light in the Landscape Award at Olmsted Plein Air Invitational based here in Atlanta. The co-founder of Olmsted Plein Air - Lillian Ansley - recently introduced me to Christine and invited me to attend one of her demonstrations. That experience led to Christine graciously taking the time to talk with me in this episode. Christine’s love of all things in nature is poetically expressed in her paintings. Plein air painting is an important part of her work. Collecting memories outdoors among nature including light, atmosphere, and geology, influence her work in the studio. 05 Nov 2019 | Kathie Odom - Nostalgic Impressionism (14) | 01:19:59
Kathie Odom lives in Knoxville, Tennessee – not far from the beautiful Great Smoky Mountain National Park. I first met Kathie and her husband Buddy almost two years ago at the Plein Air Painters of America workshop hosted by the Booth Museum in Cartersville, Georgia. She is an exuberant painter and enthusiastic student. Her paintings are filled with light and texture that capture the nostalgia and beauty of homes, buildings, farms, and landscapes scattered along smaller, less-traveled roads bypassed and unnoticed by hurried motorists barreling down crowded interstates. Her artistic vision helps us slow down and take note of the beauty of wherever she finds it. It's the landscape near her home that captures her heart. Scenes close to home are what she yearns to paint. Kathie’s development as a fine art painter was remarkably fast. She’s only been painting since 2009 – when at the age of 50 – she took her first painting workshop that was a gift from her husband. Ten years later, she was featured on the cover of the January 2019 issue of Southwest Art magazine and has been published in several other journals. She is a member of the Salmagundi Club, the American Impressionist Society, the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, the Plein Air Painters of the Southeast, the Arts and Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville, and Oil Painters of America. You are in for a treat in this fantastic conversation with Kathie Odom in this episode of the Artful Painter. 23 Apr 2021 | Vianna Szabo - Finding the Why (57) | 01:19:13
Vianna Szabo comfortably switches between painting with pastel, watercolor, acrylic, or oil. She paints beautifully sensitive portraits. Her landscape paintings capture a fleeting moment in time. Expressive color is a hallmark of her paintings no matter the subject she chooses or the medium she uses. In this episode you soon learn that Vianna has a passion for teaching other artists. Vianna's ability to take complex subjects and convey them in simple and relatable terms is a hallmark of her approach to teaching. Her students enthusiastically share their admiration and appreciation of her teaching methods. One such student emailed me and said that Vianna "has a delightful personality." After recording this interview and getting to know Vianna, I have to agree! Vianna talks about a number of intriguing topics:
And there's so much more to this conversation. After listening to Vianna you will come away uplifted by her kindness, generosity, and positivity. Not surprisingly, all of those things are evident in each of her paintings. As you view and experience her beautiful paintings, you get a sense that Vianna Szabo has – in each one – succeeded in Finding the Why. 18 Dec 2019 | Phil Starke - Light and Simplification (17) | 01:00:07
Phil Starke's goal as a painter is to suggest light. In this episode, he explains how he achieves this goal through simplification. When you view Phil’s paintings you see that they glow with light, atmosphere, and texture. He explains that if you can focus on what is important you can paint with a stick and it should work. Phil’s interest in painting began in his youth in Germany where his father was stationed while serving in the military. Regular field trips to the great museums of Europe exposed Phil to the great painting masters. Later, Phil chose an advertising track at the American Academy of Art in Chicago. However, Inspired by his art instructors at the Academy, he developed a passion for oil painting. When he graduated from the American Academy of Art, Phil chose to pursue becoming a professional fine art painter. Phil has lived in a number of locations including the American Midwest, the West and Southwest. In each place he has resided, Phil has found beauty that he was compelled to paint. A recent move took him from Arizona – a land of tans and muted gray greens – to North Georgia where the rolling hills and mountains are covered with vibrant green trees and vegetation. Barely settled in to his new home, he has already begun to explore the beautiful backcountry of Georgia including its rural farmlands and the multitude of creeks and rivers that flow through the countryside. In this episode you will hear that there are no secrets – Phil Starke does not hold back in sharing what he has learned about painting. 27 Aug 2020 | Len Chmiel - Making it His Own (42) | 01:06:43
Len Chmiel has no interest in merely copying what he sees. He says that he allows his "intuition to speak.” His intention is to expand the boundaries of realism rather than merely painting a facsimile. While many artists lament having artist’s block or a lack of inspirational ideas, Len is not one of them. He is keenly interested in all that is around him and the possibilities that they present. He says there is more than a life-time of ideas awaiting his easel. He does not let others dictate what he should paint. Rather, he paints what interests him. Len first appeared in episode 12 of the Artful Painter. I knew in having that first conversation with him that there was still much more to his story and experience. Thankfully Len reached out to me recently and said he was ready to talk. In this conversation Len shares his thoughts on the importance of knowing who you are as an artist. He discusses the importance of doing a mental reset when observing familiar things so that you see them with a fresh eye. He delves into the importance of experimentation and trying new things in order to grow as an artist. Len’s entries into the 48th Annual Prix de West Invitational Art Exhibition and Sale clearly demonstrate his virtuosity in developing new ideas in a painting. His three entries are a diverse range of subjects. One painting features scrub jays breakfasting on the rose hips of a spent wild rose bush (Scrub Jays Breakfast Menu… Rose Hips). Another painting shows aspens aglow with sunlight above a cool mountain stream (Solar Collectors). And another depicts lily pads calmly floating on the surface of a pond, basking in the sun (High Summer). These diverse, gorgeous paintings by Len Chmiel make it clear, he is intent on making each his own. 12 Sep 2021 | Scott L. Christensen - Managing Chaos (63) | 01:08:18
Scott L. Christensen must paint - it is core to his very being. His keen eye and probing curiosity of nature reveal a deep love of not just being outdoors – but, rather, immersed in it with all senses engaged. His response to the landscape is visceral. He wants the viewer to feel a deep emotional connection with the landscape. The viewer is not a mere passing observer of a Christensen painting, but is also a participant in the scene – curious, seeking answers to their own internal questions. Nature's beauty presents a cacophony of options. This excites Scott – he looks forward to the process of problem-solving and experimentation that long precedes making the first mark of a painting. Outdoor painting is just the beginning of the process. Developing ideas is fundamental to Scott's approach. Through this process of ideation, Scott seeks to find the key of a painting just as a composer decides the key of a song. It's a process that Scott Christensen appropriately likens to Managing Chaos. 25 Mar 2021 | Shanna Kunz - Forging a Visual Connection (55) | 01:06:05
Shanna Kunz is a contemporary landscape painter whose work is a conscious play of mood, light and color. As a naturalist raised and rooted in the diverse landscapes of western America, a painting takes on deeper meaning for her. Each location is an encounter of spirit with the land, the trees, and the waters that have always given her a sense of connection and order. When a location intrigues and inspires her, she paints the scene into a series using a range of keys or themes, experimenting and searching to learn more about the natural threads that tie the landscape together with complexity, subtlety and more importantly balance. Shanna looks for new ways to express spatial relationships and distance with layers of paint, brushwork, gradations, and diffusions of light. Shanna says that hopefully her study of the landscape will bring her somewhat closer to an honest translation of both soul and land. To that end she pushes color and value into new compositions and continues a lifelong effort to communicate the emotional connection she feels with the environment. Indeed when you view her paintings you sense the serene, contemplative quietness and solitude of the landscape. Between you and the landscape she paints, Shanna Kunz is actively forging a visual connection. 16 Sep 2020 | Alex Hillkurtz - The Language of Cinema in Watercolor (44) | 01:11:25
Alex Hillkurtz is a renowned storyboard artist for feature films, television, and commercials. His film credits include Argo, Almost Famous, It’s Complicated, and many others. In contrast to the fast-paced world of storyboarding, Alex enjoys the slower pace of sketching and painting in watercolors. He lives in Paris, France - a city that provides an endless source of inspiration for Alex’s architectural and landscape watercolors. As Alex roams the streets of Paris, a small cafe nestled under bright red awnings on street corner may catch his eye. Observing intently the scene before him, he endeavors to capture not just the form, but also the essence and feel of the place. His beautiful architectural watercolor paintings are born from a three-step process: first, he does a very light pencil sketch. Next, he creates darker, loose marks with a fountain pen. Finally, he applies gorgeous flows of watercolor washes. Alex's compositional and design choices feature strong elements of linear perspective. Your eye is drawn into Alex's paintings, yearning to satisfy your curiosity about the scene before you. It’s clear that Alex Hillkurtz’s broad illustration and storyboarding experience in the film industry leaves an indelible imprint of the language of cinema in his watercolors. 26 Dec 2020 | Steven S. Walker - Transparency and Light (51) | 01:19:16
Steven Walker captures the essence of the impressions of a long meditative walk along the back alley street of a small town or a quiet, rural road. His paintings often capture the warm light of the golden hour just after sunrise or just before sunset. Long shadows and warm glowing light arrest the eye in a narrative to be completed by the viewer. As the sun sets, and streetlights flicker on, Steven shifts to painting moody nocturnes that invoke feelings of a quieter time. His paintings are imbued with rich color, evocative light and shadow, and tantalizing design and composition that lure the viewer into his painting. Steven discovered his love for art at an early age. After earning a bachelor's and master's degree, he began the arduous road to becoming a professional fine art painter. He began painting full time at what may have seemed to be the worst possible time: during the dismal economic aftermath of the mortgage industry meltdown of 2008. Undeterred, and with the loving support of his wife, he threw himself into painting, continually honing his skills as a painter. The result of his hard work includes winning many awards and extensive gallery representation over the years. His determination to grow as an artist shows in the maturity of his work. Steven Walker’s paintings are a reflection of not only his skill and maturity as a painter, but also reflects his artistic poetry expressed with transparency and light. 21 May 2022 | Priya Gore - A Dash of Wilderness (70) | 01:14:51
Priya Gore’s extraordinary paintings of birds and wildlife are breathtaking. Her paintings are full of color, vibrancy, and energy. She says painting large allows her whole body to become fully engaged in the flow and gesture of painting. The process of painting is like a joyous dance, each lyrical movement breathes life into the birds that are often the subject of her art. It was against improbable odds that Priya would become the artist she is today. She came from a large family in a small village in India. In India, she says much of your future is already decided before you are conceived – either you must become a doctor or an engineer. Though as a young child she had a deep love for art, she became an engineer. Despite the challenges of a highly technical career, she sought out time to sketch wherever her work took her. She eventually settled in Australia where she currently resides. The Australian wilderness and its unimaginable landscapes, tropical rainforests, and diversified wildlife inspired her to paint. Now as a new mother, she has finally left her engineering career to pursue as she calls it - “a new bold and beautiful phase” of her life as a full-time fine art painter. When you see Priya Gore’s beautiful, animated paintings, you easily sense her exuberance. In your mind’s eye, you can see her before the canvas with her brushes applying each dab of paint with a graceful, flowing gesture – imbuing her painting with A Dash of Wilderness! 08 Apr 2021 | Chris Kolupski – Disappearing Into Time (56) | 01:33:04
Chris Kolupski began painting outdoors as a teenager in the forests of Upstate New York and Canada. He credits his high school art teacher David DeClerk for making a significant impact on his early artistic evolution. DeClerk took his class on outdoor painting field trips and introduced his students to representational American painters and illustrators such as Winslow Homer, Norman Rockwell, and the Wyeth family. Like many artists, Chris pursued career choices after high school that helped him earn a living as an illustrator, portrait artist, and taking on commission work. However, after a particularly exhausting large-scale commission, Chris had had enough. He felt depleted and looked forward to unwinding by painting natural landscapes outdoors during a vacation in Utah and Colorado with his wife Michele and their two children. That trip would prove to be a pivotal turning point for Chris. Inspired by the striking landscape of of American West, he resolved to refocus on his first painting love: landscapes. In this episode, Chris talks about that transformative moment and why it was so important to him in his development as an artist. He talks about why landscape painting appeals to him and he shares a few of his outdoor adventures. He talks, too, about the effect his portraiture work has had on his landscape paintings, the materials and techniques he likes to use, and his thoughts on teaching. This conversation with Chris Kolupski will certainly inspire you to paint outdoors, seek its solitude, and disappear into time. 25 Sep 2020 | Dan McCaw - Painting Purple Trees (45) | 01:24:12
Dan McCaw believes that art is a “collaboration between the heart and mind.” The result of that often contentious, frustrating collaboration are paintings that expose the artist’s soul. Dan’s paintings are rich with thick texture, vibrant colors, and strong contrasts. As a contemporary impressionist painter, his works are highly sought out by collectors and people who love art. His paintings dance between the realms of representational, figurative, and abstract expressionism. Dan is always exploring, always experimenting. I first discovered Dan McCaw about twenty years ago when I found his book, A Proven Strategy for Creating Great Art, on the shelf of a Borders book store. Of course, Borders is no longer. However, Dan’s wisdom lives on in this rare and highly sought after book. This wasn’t just another how-to-paint book. Dan went beyond that. He explored such topics as opening your heart, rendering versus expression, developing a point of view, broadening your perceptions, enjoying your journey, and much more. In our conversation in this edition of the Artful Painter, Dan continues his exploration of things that affect an artist’s growth. In a world where people are so quick to take sides and condemn those who do not agree with them, it certainly takes courage to create. Dan wants to help artists break out from the chains of oppressive, opinionated art-making dogma and learn to freely express themselves in their paintings. The challenge is much like that of a child who uses exuberant colors to paint a tree, but are crushingly chided for not painting the leaves of the tree the color green “like you are supposed to.” Dan McCaw is on a mission to help artists continue painting their purple trees. 20 Apr 2022 | Craig Stephens - Drawn to Form (69) | 01:17:56
Craig Stephens is an artist who delights in painting everyday things. I started following Craig after a chancing upon his Instagram account. I was instantly drawn to his small oil paintings of french fries, toy dinosaurs, peanut butter sandwiches, sneakers, hamburgers, and other everyday objects. I knew this was a painter I wanted to talk with! Craig Stephens was born in Sacramento, California in 1963. He received his B.A. in art studio in 1993. During his undergraduate years, he had the privilege of taking classes from Gary Pruner, Roy DeForest, David Hollowell, and Wayne Thiebaud. He began teaching high school art classes in 1996. I’m pretty sure that in high school I would have loved having Coach Stephens as my art teacher! Craig spent over twenty years teaching high school kids, most of whom had never held a paintbrush intending to paint something realistically. Naturally, they would wonder what to do. This got him started on thinking about what he does when he paints. The result? A new book titled: The Beginner’s Guide to Oil Painting: Simple Still Life Projects to Help You Master the Basics. Inspired by artist Duane Kiser’s painting-a-day practice, Craig has completed a small painting on nearly a daily basis since 2006. When asked why he paints French fries, toy dinosaurs, avocados, or dead astronauts on old paint can lids, he says: “I started to realize that painting could be the whole idea. What you paint doesn’t really matter.” Thus, he paints whatever is at hand - not because of the object itself, but rather, because he is Drawn to Form. 26 Nov 2019 | Virgil Elliott - The Pursuit of Quality (15) | 01:55:06
Virgil Elliott is one of only 24 artists worldwide to be certified by the American Portrait Society. He is a highly sought fine artist, portraitist, teacher, lecturer, art show judge, and writer. Virgil has spent his career at the forefront of the revival of representational art. His atelier is located in Penngrove, California. Virgil’s education in the arts began at a very early age under the guidance of his mother – a school teacher and an amateur artist. His training continued with the now sadly defunct Famous Artists School correspondence course that featured art instruction by famed illustrators such as Robert Fawcett, Albert Dorne, Austin Briggs, Steven Dohanos, Harold Von Schmidt and others. By his late teens, he was an accomplished draftsman and competent oil painter. Unfortunately his training in the fine arts at the colleges and universities he attended led to disappointment and disillusionment. The art education program at these institutions centered on modern art styles that did not embody the style and craftsmanship of traditional representational art that Virgil was keenly interested in. Resolved to become a better artist following the traditions of the Old Masters, he endeavored to teach himself from that point onward. He sought out old manuscripts to study and traveled to view Old Master paintings in museums around the world. He applied himself to constant practicing his drawing and painting skills. Eventually, the lessons Virgil learned over the years were distilled, refined, clarified and compiled into his authoritative book: Traditional Oil Painting: Advanced Techniques and Concepts from the Renaissance to the Present. It was a project that spanned over twenty years. His book was finally published in 2007 by publisher Watson–Guptill. Earlier this year, an updated version of Traditional Oil Painting was released and published by Echo Point Books. It’s an honor to have the opportunity to share this in-depth conversation with Virgil Elliott. His firm conviction and devotion to the pursuit of quality in creating art is evident from the very start of this impassioned conversation. 17 Oct 2018 | Andrew Tischler - Pursuing Artistic Truth (4) | 02:19:49
Andrew Tischler pursues artistic truth in his painting. Currently residing in New Zealand, Andrew was born in Texas. Later, his family immigrated to Australia when he was a young child. The son of sculpturer, Andrew loved to look at his father’s art books. He became enthralled with American wildlife painter Carl Rungius. Moved by the paintings he saw, Andrew began painting at a young age, and quickly progressed to become a professional, full-time artist by the time he was 21 years of age. Early in his career, Andrew strove to create quality paintings. In order to do that, he felt the need to work out a methodology to produce consistent quality. He became obsessed with the process of painting. Andrew likens his obsession to surfers who go around the world searching to catch the perfect wave. He is addicted to the search and the chase of an idea for a painting, and he is addicted to the feeling of making the best painting possible. This episode clocks in at over two hours long. Andrew does not hold back! He explains where his ideas for a painting comes from and how he develops that idea. Andrews shares three questions all artists should ask when developing an idea. He says these questions have transformed his career as an artist. Though Andrew achieve early financial success as a professional artist - like a lot of artists he was affected by the global downturn in the economy. 02 Nov 2018 | Dan Young - Always a Student (5) | 01:28:56
Dan Young is a fine art landscape painter residing in western Colorado - a land of beautiful diverse landscapes. Before Dan became a fine art artist, like a lot painters, he got his start in commercial illustration. His career in illustration taught him two things: 1) he drew everyday and as a result he learned to draw really well, and 2) he developed good business sense while working as a freelance illustrator. Those lessons have served him well as a fine art painter. When selecting what to paint, Dan is keen on painting something more than just a pretty picture. He wants to evoke feelings and emotions in the viewers of his paintings. He wants the viewer to not just see the hay stacks in a Colorado field, but smell them. Not just see a snow ladened tree, but feel how cold the air is around it. Not just see a river at sunset, but feel the motion of the water. To that end, he looks for concepts and shapes and endeavors to look beyond the obvious. It’s a never ending quest, one where Dan says he is always a student. 26 Feb 2021 | Mitch Baird - Patience and Perseverance (54) | 01:20:38
Mitch Baird is a passionate representational painter. He believes that painting is a celebration of life and the beauty that surrounds us. He is devoted to the traditions of the late 19th century artists who looked to the figure and nature for inspiration regarding light, color, and design. Seeking out this inspiration, Mitch works directly from life to capture the qualities and nuances of natural light and color harmony. He has a strong conviction that great artistic communication depends on good draftsmanship, design, and vision. His artistic desire is to portray a positive visual statement and hope the viewer will experience what he sees and in some sense be inspired, uplifted, or moved by his paintings, whether it is of a small intimate setting or a grandiose subject. In this lively conversation, Mitch talks about overcoming the resistance of our symbol-filled brains to learn to paint what we actually see. He covers the value of painting from life: whether we are outdoors painting the landscape or indoors painting a figure. He candidly shares his view of plein air events. To him, plein air painting is not a sport. Rather it is a mission to gather information and learn light. As a family man, he talks frankly about the challenges of balancing parenting, being a good husband, and painting. It’s not always easy, but it’s always rewarding. As we examine Mitch Baird’s career as a painter, it’s clear that his commitment to the craft of painting encapsulates both patience and perseverance. 19 Nov 2021 | Robert Henri - A Secret Identity (64) | 00:32:30
Robert Henri's book The Art Spirit inevitably makes it in any artist's top ten artbook recommendations. As passionate students of Art, we know Robert Henri. His paintings make up an extraordinary body of work. He is considered the "father" of the Ashcan School - a loose alliance of artists whose approach to painting had more in common with journalism than stuffy, academic Traditionalism. Henri taught in many art schools. By some estimates, he taught more than a thousand students – including Edward Hopper and George Bellows. He was universally beloved as a teacher by his students. Today we continue to benefit from his teaching preserved in the pages of The Art Spirit. We have one of Henri's students to thank for preserving Henri's teaching: Margery Ryerson. She compiled a collection of his lecture notes, letters, and commentary together into the inspirational book The Art Spirit. It continues to be a valuable source of instruction and inspiration nearly 100 years after it was first published in 1923. The original text entered the public domain in 2019. What a remarkable gift! We all certainly know Robert Henri. Or, do we? 20 May 2020 | John P. Lasater IV - Aiming for Something Higher (33) | 01:16:18
John P. Lasater IV is a representational painter whose works are a synthesis of nature, perception, and deep roots in art history. And by deep roots, I mean, he’s not fixated on the 19th century triumvirate of Sargent, Sorolla, and Zorn. Though he appreciates what each of them have accomplished, John seeks to study other artists who practiced their craft over the centuries. By not limiting himself to the influence and lessons of a just a few 19th century representational artists, John’s approach to painting is broadened and enriched. For several years John worked for a greeting card company. The deadline driven environment and the constant flow of different projects certainly contributed positively to John’s skill as an artist. However, John yearned for the freedom to paint what he wanted, and to become a full-time painter. He was uncertain about taking such a leap. However, a close friend of his helped him be decisive, set his priorities, and clarify his focus. With the support of his wife and family, he dove into painting full-time. John is a person who actively seeks out challenges in growing as a painter. At first, painting outdoors was a significant part of John’s career as a painter. Now he spends more time in his studio working on even more challenging and ambitious paintings. A close look at his paintings show that over time John's work has evolved from his early impressionistic, bravado brushwork to, more recently, a quieter, thoughtful, simpler approach. John is not content to simply paint - he has a burning desire to share the lessons he’s learned as a painter. It’s therefore no surprise, then, that he considers himself more of a teacher than an artist. He thoroughly enjoys helping others take on the challenge of growing as artists. Clearly, whether he is teaching or painting, John Lasater is a man who is always aiming for something higher. Links From This Episode: John P. 26 Jun 2019 | David Boyd, Jr. - Southern Impressionism (13) | 01:26:47
David Boyd, Jr. is a Georgia-based artist who is compelled to paint Southern Impressionism. Boyd lives in the small rural town of Newnan, Georgia–located several miles south-east of Atlanta. Not only is Boyd a fine art painter, he helps run his family-owned and operated art gallery located in the beautiful, old downtown square of Newnan. A very young David Boyd decided early on that he wanted to be a hired assassin, and if that did not work out–a race car driver. Fortunately, Boyd came from a family who provided him a rich, nurturing environment that steered him towards the visual arts rather than become the next James Bond. His father–David Boyd-is a renowned illustrator known for his work for comedian Jeff Foxworthy. His mother, a school teacher, has a love for music and dance. With their loving influence, his life of crime was averted and now Boyd is one of the finest painters in the South. He’s a signature member of Oil Painters of America as well as the American Impressionist Society. Boyd paints outdoors and is also an avid photographer. He uses plein air painting to capture a feeling, and he uses photography to capture a moment. He then takes his plein air paintings and photos to his studio and combines these into larger works. Boyd says: “I was fortunate to spend many weekends with my grandparents in rural Georgia, where the woods and old rusty cars and tractors were my playground. Today, when I see the rusting memorabilia of the rural south, I feel a deep sense of nostalgia.” Boyd is compelled to paint the remnants of a different time that has long since given way to the modern world. Old cars, decaying buildings, old store front and road signs, rusting trucks and tractors become the focus of his beautiful paintings. Boyd seeks to preserve Southern American life in its current state of decay–in what he characterizes as “landscapes of rust.” I want to acknowledge the role that the Booth Museum had in introducing me to David Boyd, Jr. and his art. In previous episodes of the Artful Painter you’ve heard me gush about the Booth Museum in Cartersville, Georgia. I’ve enjoyed many of the exhibits there, and attended workshops, demonstrations and lectures. While doing so I’ve gotten to know the Booth Art Academy Manager - Kent Mullinax. A few weeks ago he reached out to me and asked: “Do you know David Boyd, Jr.? He would be a good guest for your podcast… he’s the best in the business… you will love David. He’s a great artist and even better person." Well, how could I possibly pass that recommendation up? And so, in this episode of the Artful Painter, I’m happy to share with you this delightful conversation with David Boyd, Jr. Links: David Boyd, Jr. Website: https://davidboydjr.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/compelledtopaint/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/davidboydjrfineart/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theboydgallery/ Searching Goodwill for art book deals: https://youtu.be/9yelWldYRZ8 Amazing art book from 1839: https://youtu.be/fuRwv9WgzC0 About the Artful Painter: Artful Painter website: https://theartfulpainter.com Subscribe to my YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIo1YmQXnMm21b-Slkr69Tg Send me an email: https://carlolson.tv/contact My Artful Painter Sketchbooks: https://carlolson.tv/artful-painter-sketchbooks Carl Olson on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/artful.creative/

26 Jun 2021 | Kevin Kehoe - Western Therapy (60) | 01:29:23
Kevin Kehoe began his remarkable career as a fine art painter just a little over eight years ago. Though he had attended Art Institute of Boston, it would be another 30 years before he would pick up his paint brushes again. With the loving support of his wife, he abandoned a successful career in advertising to pursue fine art painting full time. Kevin refers to himself as a painter with a camera. However, his thoughtfully composed photos are merely a jumping off point for his exquisite, expansive paintings that stir the heart. His goal is not to simply render a photo into a painting. Rather, Kevin seeks to express his subject matter – as he puts it – “like an emotionally conjured image.” His paintings are about how he wants to recall a moment in time in his mind and heart. Struck by the epic and awe-inspiring vistas of the American West, his paintings often capture the wonder and wanderlust of the West. Kevin says of the West: “In short, it’s where you lose yourself to find yourself… The West is good medicine.” Indeed, in this stress-filled world, Kevin Kehoe’s magnificent paintings are just the right prescription and dosage we need of Western Therapy. 23 Jan 2020 | John Budicin - Taught by Nature (20) | 01:28:00
John Budicin is a painter taught by nature. He lives in California – his home since he moved from Italy when he was eleven years old. His painter’s eye, heart, and mind is filled with the lessons and experiences of his many years of painting outdoors. John is drawn to the golden hours of the setting sun, and the subtle colors of the rolling California hills muted by atmospheric haze as they recede into the distant horizon. It is the dance of light and shadow of the warm glow of a late afternoon that catches his eye and compels him to paint. John Budicin is a Signature Member of Plein Air Painters of America, Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, the California Art Club, and Oil Painters of America. In this episode, John talks about his approach to painting, his process, and what inspires him. He shares his thoughts on the apparent rise in popularity of outdoor painting. John also shares exciting and inspiring stories of his some of his outdoor painting adventures. Above all, John reminds us to be humble students of nature. 24 Sep 2018 | Matt Smith - Impressionistic Naturalism (2) | 00:56:44
Matt Smith is an outdoor painter whose style may best be described as Impressionistic Naturalism. His lyrical brush work and impressionistic portrayal of light and shadow are informed by his love of the great outdoors. Matt earned a BFA from Arizona State University. Disillusioned with their focus on abstract painting and modern art, Matt turned his attention to instructors who embodied representational art that spoke to Matt's heart and vision. That's when his real education in painting began in earnest. His love of the outdoors naturally led to his embrace of plein air painting. His skills as an outdoor painter eventually led to him becoming a signature member of the Plein Air Painters of America group, and he is currently serving as PAPA's president. 11 May 2020 | Cynthia Rosen - Letting Loose With Color (32) | 01:05:38
Cynthia Rosen would rather paint outdoors working on location. Her paintings radiate an exuberant celebration of sparkling light, brilliant colors, and a world in motion. Cynthia’s marks are made boldly, with confidence, using a palette knife to apply luscious thick blocks of colors. Though she went to school to study art when she was younger, Cynthia put on pause painting while teaching and raising a family. In time, her burning desire to paint full-time was rekindled. She self-studied – learning from Facebook painting groups and workshops. Soon she was enthusiastically painting outdoors and participating in plein air events. Viewing one of Cynthia's paintings is like listening to an improvisational jazz band. There is movement, rhythm, syncopation, dynamic range, unexpected interludes, and rich texture. Describing her approach to painting, she says there are two sides to her that have not totally melted yet. There is the very abstract side of her, influenced by non-objective color field artists such as Mark Rothko, and then there is her love of beautiful representational art. The resulting alchemy of abstract and representational art is work that sings in Cynthia’s unique, expressive voice. And, it’s a voice that some in the plein air community did not initially appreciate. Yet she stuck to her creative vision, one that connects with the many buyers of her art. To see one of Cynthia Rosen’s paintings is to see the hand of an artist who is not afraid of letting loose with color. Suzie Baker’s paintings are full of light, color, and texture. Her paintings fill the viewer with questions, with the whole story not revealed. She seeks to evoke a response from the viewer by not filling in all the blanks. Her technique is loose, painterly, and impressionistic. Yet, she does not let one technique or style constrain her art - she experiments and pushes boundaries. The result is continuing improvement as an artist. Just as one who seeks to not only learn a new language, but also learn to express themselves more clearly, Suzie desires to seek better ways to express her response to the world around her in ever more fascinating and innovative ways. In this conversation with Suzie, she shares her thoughts and amazing experiences participating in plein air painting events. We talk about coping as artists in difficult times. Suzie is a board member of the Oil Painters of America organization. She explains the mission of OPA, and the benefits of being a member. As we talk, it is evident that community is important to her. She loves to paint with others. She loves encouraging others. She embraces the challenge of competition. She enjoys teaching and coaching other artists in her workshops. 18 Feb 2020 | Jim McVicker - A Way of Seeing (23) | 01:43:36
Jim McVicker imbues atmosphere and light into his paintings that stir the heart. Whether it’s an expansive view of the Pacific coast near his home in Humboldt County, California, or an intimate interior still life set within his studio – his paintings are filled with a sense of solace and peace. Jim began painting full time in the mid-1970s. His early education as a painter began when working closely with artists Curtis Otto, James B. Moore, and George Van Hook. Painting nearly every day together, Jim assimilated what he observed, but developed his own voice. Though his primary joy is in painting representational art, Jim experimented heavily with abstract and non-objective painting for a few years. He says the lessons he learned from that period of experimentation positively influenced his approach to representational painting. Jim values painting outdoors and in the studio. You could say he has two studios – the great outdoors and his home studio. In this episode, Jim encourages us to embrace painting direct from life and to allow ourselves to be taught by nature. Rather than rigorously follow tedious formulas and rules of design, Jim encourages us to trust our intuition as an artist. Jim’s keen use of his artistic eye, mind, and heart have beautifully honed his way of seeing. 30 Jan 2020 | Skip Whitcomb - Purity of Vision (21) | 02:04:13
Skip Whitcomb says the subject of a painting is the painting, not the subject itself! He reasons that the viewer will never see the actual subject. Therefore, we must make that painting as captivating and poetic as possible. It’s nothing more than paint on a canvas. This is what we attempt in its purest form. Skip states: “Once you internalize the language of painting, you never see the world the same way. It never leaves you. The veil of rational order is lifted and what hangs in the air are sensations of painted possibilities. On good days, some would call it poetry.” Skip Whitcomb resides in Colorado. He has received numerous awards for his landscape paintings in oil and pastel. At the 2017 Prix de West Show in Oklahoma City, for example, Skip was honored with the Donald Teague Memorial Award, for best work on paper. Skip is an active member of the Plein Air Painters of America. In fact, it was at PAPA event at the Booth Museum of Western Art that I first met Skip. In this episode of the Artful Painter, Skip shares his Five Principles of painting that each artist must master. His love of nature and geology are integral to his art-making. He is not a painter simply passing through the landscape of the American West, he lingers at each location, intently observing. Skip says his time outdoor painting is his opportunity to harvest ideas and concepts. Often visiting the same locations, these timeless places become like old friends who continue to delight you as you discover new things about them. Skip seeks purity of vision in his work. 17 Jun 2022 | Greg Newbold - Evidence of Process (71) | 01:49:54
Greg Newbold is a fine art painter and illustrator based near Salt Lake City, Utah. Greg says that for him, “art is a soulful expression.” His hope is that a piece of him comes out at the end of his brush onto the surface of a painting and connects with the spirit of the viewer. Greg’s compelling visions of the American West are distilled through the filter of his own life experiences. Building upon that, he applies his own unique creative filters of simplification, light, color, shape, and texture. This creative alchemy results in paintings that feature bold composition, strong value structure, sensitive color, and intriguing narrative. Greg’s evocative, contemporary paintings are eagerly desired by collectors from around the globe. Greg characterizes his approach to painting as Stylized Realism. Greg explains how his experience as an illustrator helped him develop a diverse vocabulary that he can draw upon for his oil paintings. He explains that doing the hard work of putting in the brush mileage he put into his illustrations and paintings allowed his unique voice to appear naturally. Greg gained valuable insights into how many famous artists worked as he developed the illustrations in a series of children's books authored by his wife, Amy. The first of these books is titled, If Picasso Painter a Snowman. That successful volume was followed up by, If da Vinci Painted a Dinosaur, which includes a recreation of Coolidge’s famous Dogs Playing Poker painting reimagined as Dinosaurs Playing Poker. For each book, Greg did a deep dive into the methods of famous artists so that he could create the whimsical paintings used in each book. Greg is comfortable with both traditional and digital techniques. He embraces the use of technology where it makes sense to do so in his art. Greg and his wife Amy are also active in encouraging youth in schools with their delightful lectures about art and art-making. Greg loves to award each student with their own copy of a Creative License. The students are encouraged to express themselves and create art in their own voice, in their own way. No one can tell them they have to do it just one way because now they have their own Creative License. Personally, I think no matter how young or old we are, we can all use Greg’s Creative License! Painting outdoors is an important component of Greg’s artmaking. Even more important to Greg is also painting outdoors with others who are much better than he is. It is key to his artistic growth. Greg explains why he is drawn to painting landscapes inspired by the South West. He discusses how he develops a painting and how he upscales a painting from a study and the challenges involved in doing so. He talks about the materials he likes to use, and the effects his mark-making leaves on the surface of each of his paintings. Just as the ancient cliffs of sandstone show evidence of the effect of the relentless forces of water and wind, so do the tactile, expressive marks upon the surface of a Greg Newbold painting give Evidence of Process.
