11 Jun 2020Behind the Seams, an Interview with Jonathan Lipman00:31:12

He joined Angels in 1984, and he was apprenticed to Roger Tonks and his team of costumiers at Shaftesbury Avenue. He was later given the opportunity by Tim Angel to develop a new department, servicing the expanding demand for contemporary costume. Jonathan worked on projects including music videos for Culture Club, Duran Duran and Wham; commercials for companies such as BT and BA; feature films such as The Witches and  Four Weddings and a Funeral; and numerous TV productions including Inspector Morse. During the course of this work, he has developed long-standing associations with many of the most successful costume designers in the UK and abroad.

With Angels acquisition of two major costume collections - Bermans and BBC Costume - Jonathan’s role expanded to include supervising and administering complete in-house shows, managing all aspects of the costume-hire process with a particular focus on the workrooms and manufacturing.

In recent years, Jonathan has been designing costumes in his own right, culminating in a 2020 Olivier costume design nomination for the acclaimed Menier/West End production of Fiddler on the Roof, directed by Sir Trevor Nunn.

23 Nov 2020Behind the Seams, an Interview with Howard Burden00:54:15

Howard Burden is a highly respected Costume Designer who has been working in the industry for over 30 years.  In his conversation with Richard, Howard looks back at his career from Wimbledon college to the BBC days to his highly successful career as a freelance designer. Along the way Howard has worked on some iconic TV series including Dr Who, Red Dwarf, Poldark and Wurzel Gummidge.

A great believer in the strength of the team, he see his role as a collaborative one – he is  equally at home putting looks together at Costume Houses or finding ways to make the costumes with his team.  He is not too proud to be found towards the end of a filming day doing the laundry on the Wardrobe truck if it means his team can get home earlier.

Howard has an infectious joy about him when he is talking about costume or around costume, always projecting a sense of calm no matter what chaos is happening on a film set.  He has forged great relationships with actors, crew and directors which has led him to the position he now has in the industry.  His body of work and growing list of collaborators is testament to that

21 Sep 2020Behind the Seams, an Interview with Alex Fordham00:59:53

As an Assistant Designer, he has also developed the vital relationships needed within the different disciplines of the department to ensure that the creative vision of the Designer reaches the screen.

17 Aug 2020Behind the Seams, an Interview with Robert Jones01:11:06

Art, architecture and storytelling are among Rob's passions, and given his meticulous attention to detail, he particularly thrives on seeking out fresh design techniques to lend aliveness and vitality to his process. His repeat collaborators include Trevor Nunn, Gregory Doran, David McVicar and Josie Rourke, working at renowned venues such as the NT, the Donmar, the Metropolitan Opera, and the RSC, where he serves as an Associate Artist.

Rob and Jonathan chat fondly about their recent shared experience on Trevor Nunn’s production of 'Fiddler on the Roof' at the Menier/Playhouse Theatre. Rob’s beautifully-executed and poignant set designs were the perfect platform for Jonathan’s costumes and Tim Lutkin’s lighting, which together enhanced the vanished world of early 20th. century Jewish Russia that Rob had set out to conjure. The synchronicity and collaborative nature of this journey clearly made for a special experience for the team, cast and audience.

29 Jun 2020Behind the Seams, an Interview with Katrina Lindsay01:00:16

Jonathan and Katrina, who know each other well, chat extensively about how after she graduated from Central with a degree in Theatre Design,  opportunities at the start of her career took her on a worldwide journey of artistic discovery and a world that has subsequently led to international recognition and numerous awards.

Following a successful career in fashion journalism, Lisa pursued her passions for cinema and costume by switching to design, styling for commercials and short films, which ultimately led to costume design for film, TV and theatre.

Lisa shares her early experiences, her love of storytelling through watching movies, and describes how her respect for the craft of costuming is expressed in the productions she has worked on, which include CROWHURST, BEEN SO LONG and CHIMERICA (C4) and yet to be broadcast SMALL AXE directed by Steve McQueen.

Deconstructing her rigorous methods of research and presentation, Lisa also illuminates how this crucial process helps a performer find their character’s voice within the overall dramatic and visual narrative.

23 Jul 2020Behind the Seams, an Interview with Charlotte Finlay and Charlotte Sewell01:10:51

Both Charlottes have individually clocked up an extraordinary list of production-credits, perhaps unsurprising given their unique understanding of how the costume department functions within the overall structure of a production. Amongst other topics, they discuss how they’ve recently become co-chairs of the costume and wardrobe film and TV branch of BECTU .

As they talk, the value they both place on fairness, respect and equality within the workplace emerges clearly. Both believe that within the highly-pressurized working environment of a film or TV production, errors are unfortunately inevitable in terms of safe working-practices. During their tenure at BECTU, they will strive to build up a strong membership, to protect and promote the best working-practices and to encourage a creative and harmonious space for their members.
