I finally did a podcast on time! It's been a while since I've done that. Note that by "on time" I mean "I announced publicly I was going it Friday night, and I completed it." So here it is! The theme this time around was "Canadians" - all artists featured in the podcast are Canadian.

29 Nov 2016 | #101 - Sharon Jones Tribute + Leonard Cohen Covers | 01:12:03
Welcome to another episode of Alternative Airwaves! In today's show, a sort-of tribute to Sharon Jones (who passed away November 18th 2016), and a couple of cover songs of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah (he passed away November 7th 2016). Also - I got the name of a song wrong during the show. The track by Reole ft. Sophie Mendoza is actually titled "It's A New Day".

What better way to welcome the new year, 2013, then by looking back at some music from 2012? I can't think of any other way. So join me for some great tracks that I missed in 2012 (shame on me). There are some great songs and artists here - hopefully you'll find something you like as well. Playlist

Thanks for joining me for another fun-filled show. Some great tracks, ranging from the 1970s (Single Bullet Theory) to a new track from 2011 (Josh Woodward). I started the show a little differently today thanks to a fun song by Hot Fiction; I also announced the next themed podcast, coming up June 25th. But it's still June 11th, so enjoy this podcast now!

26 Mar 2012 | #46 - Streets of Hastings Interview | 00:40:58
The bulk of this podcast is devoted to an interview I did with Rockland band Streets of Hastings (http://www.streetsofhastings.com), so I didn't put a lot of effort into picking the rest of the music. They have a CD Release party tonight (March 23rd, 2012) at 8pm at Avant Garde (http://www.avantgardebar.ca), so if you're in the Ottawa area be sure to check them out. It's only $10 at the door. This week's podcast is loosely themed around colours! All artists or tracks played in today's podcast feature at least one colour - except in the case of PhaZer, which was actually found in a search for bands that sound like the Red Hot Chili Peppers on Jamendo.com. I forgot to mention that in the podcast. Enjoy! 11 Mar 2012 | #45 - The United93, Barreracudas | 00:32:25
A short podcast to follow-up the ridiculously long 'cast from two weeks ago. I had some issues with Jamendo when it came time to put the podcast together, so a couple of artists had repeat songs. If you want to check out the artists I would have played, links will follow the playlist.
To buy a copy of the Barreracudas' new album, Nocturnal Missions, head to their record label Douchemaster Records (link above). To purchase The United93's latest album, Yellow Fever, you can do so from their Bandcamp webpage (link also above). Check out these bands on Jamendo: Cinemon; 57jackbraves. 04 Jun 2013 | #70 - Summer's Here? | 00:46:47
Summer seems to have suddenly switched on! At least, that's the case in Ottawa. In today's slightly shorter episode, I've picked some "classic" songs and some newer songs, and also was completely unaware of the technical glitches at the start of the podcast. No solid topics of conversation in the show, just lots of great music. If you're an App developer, you have until June 9th to submit something to the Jamendo App Contest. To listen, download from Archive.org, iTunes, or Stitcher. Please note I am aware of the technical issues downloading the podcast from iTunes; if you have an iOS device, you should be able to download from the Podcasts app without problem. Or just get Stitcher - it's pretty great.

18 Jan 2019 | Weekly Airwave - Astronauts - Parker | 00:03:15
https://www.jamendo.com/artist/512352/parker Script Hi and welcome to Alternative Airwaves - I'm your host Steve, bringing you the best in Creative Commons music. This is the Weekly Airwave: one track with some information about the song or the artist. This week's track: Astronauts by Parker. Here's a description of the artist and the track from Jamendo.com: Parker is a band from Miami, Florida, comprising of Reed F. Gaines and Carter Vail. The pair met at the Frost School of Music in 2015 and began making music later that year. Parker released their eponymous EP in April of 2018, featuring Lo-Fi indie music with a nod towards Alt-Country. Parker will be releasing their next single, ‘Astronauts’ on November 16th under Dreamtime Palace, with an EP to follow in early 2019. <pre>Astronauts is a futuristic synth song about being stuck on the moon. Featuring high falsetto voices & the warbling sounds of the MICROKORG, 'Astronauts' is a love song about missing Earth and the isolation of space.
</pre>
If you're wondering, the MICROKORG is a synth from Korg released in 2002, and still in production today. Listen for it as you take in Parker's "Astronauts". 12 Jul 2014 | #78 - The Road Trip Special | 00:58:24

It's been two weeks, so that means it's time for a new podcast! I normally get these up on the same Saturday that I record them, but events this weekend that may or may not have had something to do with watching Moneyball and baking an apple crumble served to interfere with those plans. In any case, here is your latest podcast! Savour it, because it may appear in a slightly different format two weeks from now (insert ominous chords here). 22 Oct 2011 | #35 - October 22, 2011 | 00:43:50
No fancy title today, my mind was a little blanked. A couple of notes for this episode before you listen: one, I was trying a new method of recording (that ended up being much less convoluted), so there are going to be a couple of hiccups here and there - especially at the beginning, where my voice is overpowered by the music. Woops! Two, because of the microphone I have and the method I used, my mic had to be on at all times, so there may be some background noises throughout the podcast. As I warned on Twitter, my dog probably makes a frequent appearance in the first segment. Now that's out of the way, onto the show notes!

And backing music was provided by James Edwards. I said I would do a "Creative Commons News" recap on the blog, but that feature is really quickly turning into new CC releases (which is OKAY). Here are some quick stuff I pulled from various sources.

14 Jun 2010 | #8 - CC Sampler Part 1 | 00:38:52
I finally got to do the podcast this weekend! Life has been very busy: sudden funeral 8 hours away, a softball tourney this afternoon (B Pool Champs!!), hockey tonight...well there was a lot. I finally finished the final mix tonight, which required very little effort thankfully. I stumbled in a couple of places but I felt the podcast fit together well, and there was some very cool music played. Speaking of which, here's the playlist with artist info
Part two should be coming this week - most likely to be done again on the weekend when I have some more time. I was going to record it at the same time as Part 1, but I wasn't able to get to it.

27 Jan 2013 | #66 - 2013 New Releases | 00:38:27
Back with a new show this week! I scoured the Internet for new releases, and had to stretch a bit for what I considered to be "2013" new releases. What I found were some pretty great tracks, and if it wasn't technically a new release, it's a bit of a preview of what is to come this year. Going by the tracks I picked, it looks like we're going to have another great year of Creative Commons-licensed music!

I made it to episode 75! Joining me on today's podcast is special guest Mike Mersereau, who hosts the CKCU program Audio Sensory Resuscitation (currently on hiatus...will be back soon!). Mike secured an interview with the one and only Kellee Maize! Hopefully that doesn't ruin the surprise of the show for you. Also in this podcast, the latest track from Kellee's new album, an awesome cover, and some funky technical issues in the first half. Enjoy! Unfortunately, there is still a general lack of songs about baseball in the Creative Commons world. But there is no lack of awesome songs, and included among those are two cover songs! Enjoy!

Script Hi and welcome to Alternative Airwaves - I'm your host Steve, bringing you the best in Creative Commons music. This is the Weekly Airwave: one track with some information about the song or the artist. This week's track: Wild by The Rabbits. Wild is a quiet folk track from "Tall Pines and Tangled Vines", a 2018 debut LP by The Rabbits. The Rabbits hail from the UK, but are listed as Canadian on Jamendo - probably because they recorded their record at Orchid Studios in Vancouver, B-C - and they are also touring around Canada. Apparently they're doing this from a van they've been living in for almost a year. That's dedication to their music! Follow them on Jamendo or at the rabbits dot com. Script Hi and welcome to Alternative Airwaves - I'm your host Steve, bringing you the best in Creative Commons music. This is the Weekly Airwave: one track with some information about the song or the artist. This week's track: By Your Side by Cartel ft. Mallz & Deron Alek. By Your Side is an exclusive track on Jamendo.com, another hip hop track just as good if not better than last week's track from Tab. The problem of being "friends with benefits" is that eventually, someone catches feelings and wants to become more than what they are. Mallz and Deron Alek speak on just such a situation over a track by Hoodgrown Productions.

12 Apr 2019 | Weekly Airwave - My Sweet & Sour Room - Icicle | 00:05:11
Script Hi and welcome to Alternative Airwaves - I'm your host Steve, bringing you the best in Creative Commons music. This is the Weekly Airwave: one track with some information about the song or the artist. This week's track: My Sweet and Sour Room by Icicle. This is an instrumental track by Montreal artist Icicle; I found this by looking at similar artists to Lower Loveday from last week's episode. I don't normally pick out instrumental tracks, but I really liked the beat and instrument choice in this song. Icicle is actually Krassy Halatchev, and has Bulgarian origins. I think you can really hear some of his influences come through in this track. You can follow him on Jamendo or icicle dot club. 27 Jul 2011 | #31 - The Dog Days of Summer | 00:46:02
""Dog Days" (Latin: diēs caniculārēs) are the hottest, most sultry days of summer. Dog Days can also define a time period or event that is very hot or stagnant, or marked by dull lack of progress. The name comes from the ancient belief that Sirius, also called the Dog Star, in close proximity to the sun was responsible for the hot weather." -- Wikipedia Your eyes are not lying! I'm going away this weekend, so I thought I would release the podcast a few days early. It's a little long this time around, but since it's been three weeks since the last episode, I figured nobody will mind! Some great music in there, starting off hard and fast and ending on a similarly strong note. Except for one or two songs, everything in the podcast has been featured on the blog in the last three weeks. Direct Download (42 MB) - Length: 46:02
Thanks for listening / downloading! I hope you enjoy your own dog days of summer. Support Alternative Airwaves by donating to their Tip Jar: https://tips.pinecast.com/jar/alternative-airwaves
11 Nov 2012 | #62 - Indie Alternative Show | 00:32:08
The "unofficial" theme of today's show is "music I liked this week", but I didn't like that as a title. So we've got "Indie Alternative Show". Lots of great stuff, pulled mostly from a USA Elections Playlist on Jamendo.com, plus a new track from Brad Sucks. Enjoy! 08 Feb 2019 | Weekly Airwave - Undercover - Neon Niteclub | 00:04:21
Script Hi and welcome to Alternative Airwaves - I'm your host Steve, bringing you the best in Creative Commons music. This is the Weekly Airwave: one track with some information about the song or the artist. This week's track: Undercover by Neon Niteclub. This group reminds me a ton of Canada's own Chromeo. Neon Niteclub is from the US, and describe themselves as "80s pop with a modern twist". Undercover comes from the 2018 album Blue Electric Eyes (be sure to check out that track as well). You can find their music on jamendo dot com or neon niteclub dot bandcamp dot com. Hope you enjoy Undercover - be sure to check out alternative airwaves dot com for podcasts and music reviews. 03 Aug 2010 | #11 - SOULED OUT | 00:34:17
Episode 11 has a funky soul groove going for it - thanks to the featured artist, SOULED OUT and their No Name Funk EP. It is currently available on iTunes but you can also download it directly here if you don't use that particular program. Track Listing: CEREALES KILLERS - Feel It SOULED OUT - No Name Funk EP JAMES JR - Let's Stay Together Here's the translated portion from Souled Out's website that I read (and I stress it's improperly translated from German): Ingredients, such as the tight rhythm section, horns, and fat are to be understood by itself is refined the whole thing with a strong vocal part and surprising arrangements and interpretations. Detailed recipe follows. Support Alternative Airwaves by donating to their Tip Jar: https://tips.pinecast.com/jar/alternative-airwaves
26 Oct 2012 | #61 - Audio Magazine | 00:31:07
I'm trying something different with today's podcast - an audio magazine of sorts! I'd like to be a little more informative, or at least different, instead of being just a podcast that plays a bunch of music. So my idea with this is to draw back on the music a little and focus on other things...which right now is not much. But one step at a time! In today's episode, a look at the short film Blinky and Hot Fiction's latest album, Apply Within. Blinky - Available on Vimeo.com. See more of Ruairi Robinson's videos (including some awesome TIFF/Cadillac ads!) here: http://vimeo.com/ruairirobinson/videos Track Listing

01 Jul 2010 | #9 - Canada Day Podcast | 00:35:31
Good morning everyone, and Happy Canada Day! So far mine's been pretty great - I went to bed sick and woke up feeling fine this morning, and to discover I have some juice in the fridge that I didn't remember making. I've had this podcast waiting in the wings for a week now, and I've been very excited to release it. It is 100% Canadian, and features some really great artists that I found mostly on Jamendo.com. Here's the playlist - now go out and enjoy the day! I might find myself in downtown Ottawa today, which depends entirely on whether I feel up for biking down there. If you're looking for some things to do today, check out this Canada Day Guide from www.ottawastart.com.

09 Nov 2010 | #15 - 20lb Sounds | 00:30:21
Finally, another episode of Alternative Airwaves! I've been pretty busy with NaNoWriMo this month, but I found time this evening to get a podcast recorded. I even did some writing while I was putting the show together! All in all, a successful evening.
And here are some links from the headlines...

09 Feb 2011 | #20 - 20th Anniversary Spectacular | 00:35:45
I did it - I made it to 20 episodes! In this week's episode, you'll hear quite a bit of hip hop (some of it not so conventional) plus some bluegrass mixed in between. All this and more...in episode 20 of Alternative Airwaves! Unfortunately the iTunes feed is still broken, but I hope to get it fixed in the near future. But probably not until the next podcast. Playlist for #20
