23 Apr 2021 | Interview Special: Jonathan Johnson, CBS Sports | 00:11:58
This week saw one of the most shocking 48 hours in football history as the Premier League's so-called 'Big Six' signed-up to a new 'Super League' alongside European heavyweights including Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus. Almost immediately there was heavy opposition to the Super League from fans, European governments, German football clubs, non 'Big Six' Premier League clubs, British Royals, UEFA, FIFA and more. The scale of anger led to a majority of the clubs who had signed up to withdraw from the Super League within 48 hours of it being officially announced. In an interview special, we spoke to CBS Sports reporter and Aston Villa fan Jonathan Johnson about how the Super League collapsed and what it could have meant for Villa if the plans had succeeded. We also looked at the new rules for the Champion League, which include qualification based on historical performance, and whether they might affect Villa should they ever finish in the top four of the Premier League. In The Perfect Ten feature, Roisin & Frankie assess Anwar El Goalzi's overall performance this season (spoiler alert - they both love the guy). Plus, Roisin tests George & Frankie's football knowledge with a Villa quiz as they go head-to-head for the prestigious Townsend Trophy (& a free Nando's). 15 May 2021 | Rivalries: Crystal Palace | 00:27:28
'Rivalries' is a series where we meet fans from opposition clubs to talk over the latest Aston Villa games. This week, ahead of Sunday's trip to Selhurst Park, Frankie met Reuters sports journalist and Crystal Palace fan Iain Axon. They discussed what to expect from both sides, including the threat posed by Wilfried Zaha and Eberechi Eze - though Frankie theorised Ollie Watkins might be the difference between the two sides. Both clubs are also familiar with Christian Benteke, a player who was loved by Villa fans during his free-scoring time with the club. Since joining Palace, however, Benteke's goals have largely dried up in recent years. Frankie and Iain discussed his obvious talents and his surprising loss of form. Plus, should Jack Grealish start for England at the Euros? And can England go on and win the whole tournament? Hear our score predictions and more! 17 May 2021 | Surrender at Selhurst Park | 00:38:31
Three lifelong Aston Villa fans from Birmingham take a light-hearted look at the highs & lows of supporting the world's best football team. A frustrating feature of Villa's return to the Premier League has been that the team take an early lead but often seem to throw their advantage away. That pattern repeated itself at Selhurst Park, where Crystal Palace twice fought back to beat Villa 3-2. Roisin, George and Frankie lament Villa's frustrating loss and address what needs to be improved in the transfer window, namely buying a physically imposing, composed centre-midfielder. In The Perfect Ten feature, Roisin & George assess John McGinn's overall performance this season (spoiler alert - they both love the guy). 21 May 2021 | Rivalries: Chelsea | 00:38:17
'Rivalries' is a series where we meet fans from opposition clubs to talk over the latest Aston Villa games. This week, ahead of Chelsea's visit to Villa Park on Sunday, Frankie met sports journalist Will Dalton. They discussed what to expect from both sides, including the threat posed by the likes of Timo Werner & Christian Pulisic. Will also explained Chelsea's surge in form since Thomas Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard as manager. Villa cannot finish higher or lower than 11th in the league, but with fans in the stadium for the first time since early 2020, the team will no doubt want to end the season on a high. Both clubs are also familiar with Tammy Abraham and Ross Barkley. Frankie and Will discussed their obvious talents, recent struggles and what might be in store for them this summer. 24 May 2021 | A Marvelous End To The Season | 00:36:09
Three lifelong Aston Villa fans from Birmingham take a light-hearted look at the highs & lows of supporting the world's best football team. Villa ended their season on a high with back-to-back victories over Spurs and Champions League finalists Chelsea. Roisin, George and Frankie celebrate a positive end to the season as Marvelous Nakamba stars against Chelsea's galaxy of attacking talents. There's plenty to look forward to next season, Carney Chukwuemeka got more minutes, and Super Jack is back - it all means Frankie found some consolation after the UK got 'nil pois' at his beloved Eurovision. In The Perfect Ten feature, Frankie & George assess Jack Grealish's overall performance this season (spoiler alert - we might be really big fans of this guy). 01 Aug 2021 | Don't Hit The Road, Jack! | 00:32:12
Two lifelong Aston Villa fans from Birmingham take a light-hearted look at the highs & lows of supporting the world's best football team. Will Jack Grealish stay or will he go? George and Frankie have an impassioned talk about why Super Jack should stick with the project being pursued by NSWE at Villa Park. Whilst understandable that an individual of Grealish's quality would want to play Champions League football, our hosts make the case that Villa are on track to reach that level and can also compete for trophies this season. With an ever improving first team, the country's best youth set-up, serious owners and more exciting signings to come, we believe now is not the time for anyone to leave. Frankie also makes the case it is time for Aston Villa to look at the northern powerhouse clubs who have taken some of our best players over the years and finally stop that trend and aim to knock them off their perch. If clubs like Atletico Madrid and Spurs, once seen as 'nearly clubs', can make the Champions League final, why can't we dare to dream? Come on Super Jack! Stick with your lifelong club. 11 Aug 2021 | Season Preview & Predictions | 00:58:38
Two lifelong Aston Villa fans take a light-hearted look at the highs & lows of supporting the world's best football team. A new season is upon us! With Jack Grealish now off up north and a range of new signings turning up at Villa Park, George and Frankie look ahead to an upcoming season filled with mystery and intrigue. There's signs of optimism for Villa, particularly with the emergence of young talents like Carney Chukwuemeka and Jaden Philogene-Bidace, as well as exciting new players including Emi Buendia, Leon Bailey, Danny Ings, Ashley Young and Axel Tuanzebe. But will it take the team a while to adapt with Grealish out the door and a disrupted pre-season? And how will the team set-up this season? George & Frankie predict where they think Villa will finish in the league table, who the breakout stars might be, the maddest thing to happen this season will be, and what else will happen in the Premier League. They also talk about the season opener at Watford where Villa will go up against an old nemesis in the shape of Troy Deeney. Aston Villa made a number of signings over the summer and one of the most eye-catching names to arrive at Villa Park was Leon Bailey.
The Jamaican international was signed from German side Bayer Leverkusen for around £30 million and proves Villa are capable of attracting leading names in football. Unlike Villa's other summer signings, Bailey has never played in the Premier League, so we spoke to German Football Expert, DW reporter and Leverkusen fan Max Merrill to find out more about what Villa fans and Dean Smith can expect from their new man. Two lifelong Aston Villa fans take a light-hearted look at the highs & lows of supporting the world's best football team. Argentine playmaker Emi Buendia scored his first goal for the club with a lovely curling effort, but Villa could only go on and draw 1-1 against newly promoted Brentford. George & Frankie look at the numerous circumstances that have gone against Villa and Dean Smith early this season, primarily COVID disruption, a lengthy injury list and new signings needing time to bed in with each other. In the 'Spicy Question' feature, they also ask who Villa's most impressive new signing has been. Danny Ings has got off to a flier with two goals, but Ashley Young has also proven his invaluable experience and versatility. 02 Sep 2021 | Transfer Window Review | 00:51:02
The transfer window has shut after a summer where numerous new players joined Aston Villa and one major name left. Although Villa lost their talisman Jack Grealish to Man City, they invested heavily in the attacking areas, with the likes Emi Buendia, Leon Bailey and Danny Ings joining for big fees. Both Axel Tuanzebe and the versatile Ashley Young rejoined Villa, too. The question now is whether Villa have done enough? What is the overall aim for this season? Did the club miss out by not signing another CDM, or does it provide the likes of Carney Chukwuemeka and Jacob Ramsey more room to grow as players? We're joined by Holtecast contributor and lifelong Villa fan, Tom Nightingale, to talk over this summer's transfers and what Villa can now aim for going forward. 08 Sep 2021 | Interview Special: John 'Dixie' Deehan | 00:45:01
John 'Dixie' Deehan grew up an Aston Villa fan and got to live the dream of every Holte Ender by wearing the Claret & Blue jersey and scoring goals for his boyhood team. From 1975-79, John was part of a famous attacking force alongside the brilliant Andy Gray and Brian Little and eventually returned to Villa as assistant manager in 2001. He scored more than 50 goals during his time at the club and won the 1977 League Cup. In our interview, John describes growing up an Aston Villa fan, getting scouted and making his first team debut at the age of 18. John vividly recalls playing for the great Ron Saunders and sharing goals with Gray and Little. There are also recollections of Villa's famous 5-1 win over a then mighty Liverpool side, winning the League Cup in dramatic fashion against Everton, scoring a late equaliser in front of the Holte against Johan Cruyff's Barcelona and being forced to escape as Rangers fans invaded the pitch at Villa Park. Two lifelong Aston Villa fans take a light-hearted look at the highs & lows of supporting the world's best football team. Villa dominated Chelsea for long spells during their weekend trip to Stamford Bridge but somehow lost the game 3-0. The difference was that Chelsea made no mistakes and took their chances, whilst Villa did not. George and (a newly sunburnt) Frankie discuss the positives shown by Villa's new 3-5-2 formation and the problems it caused Chelsea, particularly in the first-half. We also discuss yet another decent showing by Jacob Ramsey and other midfielders. In the 'Spicy Question' feature, they also ask whether John McGinn is now Aston Villa's main man. The Scottish midfielder was heavily praised by pundits for his display at Chelsea where he continued to show decent early season form. Two lifelong Aston Villa fans take a light-hearted look at the highs & lows of supporting the world's best football team. Villa won the Cazoo Derby (or 'El Cazooico' as we prefer to call it) with a 3-0 win over Everton inspired by a cameo from new signing Leon Bailey. George and Frankie discuss why this is a statement result for Dean Smith's side and how Villa's squad depth really shone through. The pair discuss the positives shown by Villa's new 5-3-2 / 3-5-2 formation, how it could free-up Matty Cash to be a more diverse player and how Jacob Ramsey continues to impress. Also...shout out to Marvelous Nakamba, who played very well when he came on for John McGinn. Two lifelong Aston Villa fans take a light-hearted look at the highs & lows of supporting the world's best football team. FINALLY, after 12 long years, Aston Villa defeated Manchester United at Old Trafford with an exceptional 1-0 win. George and Frankie are full of praise for the entire team and coaching staff, with a special mention to Kortney Hause for stepping up when the team needed him. The pair discuss every aspect of Villa's big win and how the 5-3-2 / 3-5-2 hybrid formation has recently caught opposition teams out. Dancin' Emi Martinez also gets special recognition for being the world's greatest wind-up merchant. In the 'Spicy Question' feature, George and Frankie give their thoughts on the recent Twitter furore where some were calling for Dean Smith to be sacked after Villa's recent 3-0 loss to Chelsea. 04 Oct 2021 | Son Turns It On Against Villa | 00:37:22
Two lifelong Aston Villa fans take a light-hearted look at the highs & lows of supporting the world's best football team. After a golden day out at Old Trafford last week, Villa couldn't follow-up by gaining points at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Inspired by the exceptional Son Heung-min, Spurs ended their poor run of form with a 2-1 victory, while Villa were very sloppy. George and Frankie discuss whether the 3-5-2 formation worked overall and if it left Son with too much room to run into. They also raise whether it was players performing poorly rather than a formation issue that led to Sunday's loss. In the 'Spicy Question' feature, George and Frankie give their thoughts on whether Ezri Konsa should get picked for England. In a special bonus episode we're joined by Birmingham Live writer, Pat Rowe (@PGR_Analytics on Twitter) to review Villa's season so far. We focused on Dean Smith's move to a 3-5-2 formation: how it has worked? Which players have excelled in it? Does it leave Aston Villa vulnerable to the likes of Son Heung-min when they have more space to work with? We question whether Villa should stay with the formation, which brought wins over Everton and Manchester United, or be willing to regularly change things up. Pat also explains how the ever improving Jacob Ramsey could save Villa millions in transfer fees and why Douglas Luiz was September's statistical player of the month. In the 'Spicy Question', we give our thoughts on the mystery of why Ezri Konsa has not yet been picked for England. There is also a detailed lookahead to the upcoming Wolves match at Villa Park. They also raise whether Douglas Luiz's withdrawal may have been a big factor in the shocking Villa collapse. 25 Oct 2021 | Arsenal Outgun Villa | 00:42:57
Two lifelong Aston Villa fans take a light-hearted look at the highs & lows of supporting the world's best football team. Friday's trip to the Emirates was a night to forget as Arsenal dominated the game and won 3-1. Frankie & George discuss how Arsenal had clearly worked out Villa's 3-5-2 approach, which meant the away side could barely string a pass together in the first-half. After three losses in a row, George and Frankie suggest it is time for a 'back to basics' approach with a return to the back four. They also celebrate the one glimmer of light from a miserable night where Jacob Ramsey scored his first senior goal for the club. In the 'Spicy Question' feature, George and Frankie give their thoughts on Villa's record signing Emi Buendia and respond to anyone who has given up on the Argentinian attacker. 12 Nov 2021 | Steven Gerrard Joins Villa. Guest: Alex Anderson, Rangers Podcaster | 00:20:28
This week, Steven Gerrard was appointed as the new Aston Villa manager to replace the departed and much loved Dean Smith. On the day Gerrard joined Villa, Frankie spoke to Alex Anderson, a football writer and contributor to the popular Rangers podcast Gersnet. Alex believes Villa have 'won the lottery' in appointing Gerrard and his coaching staff. Villa were well organised and creative going forward in a highly impressive 2-1 victory at Crystal Palace. The Eagles, who were unbeaten at home this season, created little as Villa's defence and midfield held firm. Frankie and George have high praise for the midfield three of Marvelous Nakamba, Jacob Ramsey and John McGinn, who all worked incredibly hard to protect the defence and provide chances for the attackers. They also recognise the contributions of the ageless Ashley Young, Leon Bailey and Ollie Watkins in the front three. Overall, it was a really impressive display from the entire team. In the 'Spicy Question' feature, George & Frankie give their thoughts on Morgan Sanson. Should Villa stick with the injury-prone midfielder or sell/loan him in the transfer window? We also look ahead to this Wednesday's big night out at Villa Park against Manchester City. Frankie and George both believe Villa can make life hard for Pep Guardiola's incredible side, especially if the fans produce a visceral atmosphere on the night Jack Grealish (injury permitting) returns to Villa Park for the first time since his £100 million move. 'Rivalries' is a series where we meet fans from opposition clubs to talk over the latest Aston Villa games. This week, ahead of Wednesday's match against Manchester City, Frankie met City fan David Mooney, who hosts the 'Blue Moon' podcast and The Athletic's 'Why Always Us?'. David explained what Villa can expect from Pep Guardiola's side and identified some of the threats posed by Steven Gerrard's resurgent team. Of course, Frankie and David also discussed Jack Grealish, who left Villa for City over the summer for a British transfer record of £100 million. Whether he is present or not on Wednesday night, the match atmosphere at Villa Park promises to be memorable. There's also the all-important score predictions. 03 Dec 2021 | City Win With Silva Bullet, Aston Villa Impress | 00:49:24
Two lifelong Aston Villa fans take a light-hearted look at the highs & lows of supporting the world's best football team. Recently appointed Villa manager Steven Gerrard experienced his first loss with the club in a 2-1 defeat to Manchester City. Pep Guardiola's side were impressive from the outset and scored an incredible team goal through Bernardo Silva, but Villa fought back impressively in the second-half. Villa's overall display filled both George and Frankie with optimism. They have high praise for the midfield, especially Douglas Luiz, and credit Ollie Watkins for giving City's defence a tough night. They also address Jack Grealish's mixed reaction on his return to Villa Park. In the 'Spicy Question' feature, George & Frankie give their thoughts on what they would realistically like to see Gerrard achieve at Villa. Wouldn't finally winning a cup be a brilliant thing? We also look ahead to Sunday's game at Villa Park against Leicester City in a match which reunites Gerrard with his old Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers. Frankie and George both believe Leicester can be beaten, especially in light of their poor defence of set pieces. James Maddison is in good form, though, and it might fall on the ever improving Marvelous Nakamba to keep him quiet. 07 Dec 2021 | Aston Villa Outfox Leicester | 00:32:42
Two lifelong Aston Villa fans take a light-hearted look at the highs & lows of supporting the world's best football team. Steven Gerrard got a win over his former manager, Brendan Rodgers, on Sunday as his Aston Villa side gained a solid 2-1 victory against Leicester City. George & Frankie discuss how the game followed a similar pattern to the previous City match, where Villa were somewhat unconvincing in the first-half but raised their game impressively in the second-half. There is high praise again for Marvelous Nakamba and especially John McGinn, who was exceptional at Villa Park. George & Frankie also discuss Gerrard's tactical approach and how Villa looked comfortable and effective at changing formation during a game. In the 'Spicy Question' feature, the hosts give their thoughts on whether Tyrone Mings has done enough to keep the Villa captaincy (spoiler alert, they both really like Mings). We also look ahead to Saturday's game at Anfield against a hugely in-form Liverpool. The match of course will see Gerrard return to Anfield, meaning there will be high emotion and drama surrounding the game... but can Villa get a result? Frankie & George believe it is possible, though stopping Mo Salah, who is arguably the world's best player, will be no simple task. 09 Dec 2021 | Rivalries: Liverpool. Guest: Tom Burrows, The Athletic | 00:13:59
'Rivalries' is a series where we meet fans from opposition clubs to talk about upcoming Aston Villa games. This week, ahead of Saturday's match against Liverpool, Frankie met Reds fan and journalist from The Athletic, Tom Burrows. Tom explained the emotions of seeing Steven Gerrard return to Anfield with an opposing team and how it might affect the game. Although Liverpool are in great form, Tom identified how Villa could potentially pose a threat (it seems Austin MacPhee might once again be called on to earn his wages). Frankie & Tom also discuss whether Mo Salah is now the best player in the world, Liverpool's current playing style, and the all-important score predictions. 12 Dec 2021 | Soft Salah Pen Costs Aston Villa | 00:41:24
Two lifelong Aston Villa fans take a light-hearted look at the highs & lows of supporting the world's best football team. Villa defended resolutely at Anfield on Saturday but a soft Mo Salah penalty decision cost the Villans in the end. George & Frankie discuss whether the penalty should have stood & laud Villa's encouraging performance against Liverpool. They also have high praise for Tyrone Mings. In the 'Spicy Question' feature, the hosts give their thoughts on whether Emi Martinez is now the world's best goalkeeper. We also look ahead to Tuesday's game at Carrow Road when Villa go up against former manager Dean Smith & his Norwich side. The Canaries have improved under Smith & look harder to break down, but a lack of quality going forward appears to be costing them at the moment. Can Villa take advantage? Two lifelong Aston Villa fans take a light-hearted look at the highs & lows of supporting the world's best football team. Steven Gerrard made it four wins in six at Villa as his new club swept aside Norwich City 2-0 this week. George & Frankie laud the performance of the ever improving Jacob Ramsey, who scored a screamer. They also have high praise for Villa's attacking play, particularly the threat posed by Matty Cash down the right hand side. In the 'Spicy Question' feature, the hosts give their thoughts on who Villa's best player has been this season as the club approaches the halfway point of the season. We also look ahead to Saturday's game at Villa Park against Burnley. Two lifelong Aston Villa fans take a light-hearted look at the highs & lows of supporting the world's best football team. Aston Villa fell to a disappointing loss at Brentford, a team that seemingly always causes problems for the Villans. Although Villa largely dominated the game, it was a familiar tale of controlling the ball but failing to kill off the opponent when they had the chance. George & Frankie discuss what went wrong. In the 'Spicy Question' feature, the hosts give their thoughts on Ollie Watkins being linked to Arsenal. Just how damaging would a Watkins move to North London be? Coutinho has signed for Aston Villa on loan from Barcelona until the end of the season. Villa manager Steven Gerrard played with the skilful Brazilian attacker at Liverpool and described his former team mate as a 'magician'. Coutinho has generated huge excitement amongst the Villa fanbase and represents an ambitious move for the Midlands club. He joins Villa after a disappointing spell at Barcelona, who signed him for a club record fee of £142 million in 2018. Frankie is joined by the well-known Spanish football expert Graham Hunter to discuss Coutinho's time in Spain and what he can offer Villa. The duo also talked about the positives in Villa's display and the team's frustrations in the final third of the pitch. 18 Jan 2022 | Coutinho & JJ Save The Day For Aston Villa | 00:41:09
Two lifelong Aston Villa fans take a light-hearted look at the highs & lows of supporting the world's best football team. Aston Villa fought back from 2-0 down on Saturday to come away with a creditable draw against Manchester United. Villa were slow to start the match and United took advantage of their opponents early poor play, but the second-half appearance of Coutinho and a big performance from Jacob Ramsey helped drive the team to a draw. Our hosts ask whether Villa can ever perform with consistency over 90 minutes? Also, is it time to call it quits with the Ings and Watkins pairing? In the 'Spicy Question' feature, the hosts give their thoughts on Monday's report that Manchester United have targeted John McGinn as a summer transfer target. Would now be a wise time to sell the Scottish international or could it be yet another setback for Villa as they try to push towards Europe? We also look ahead to the weekend's game at Goodison Park. Aston Villa have spent big during the January transfer window with the £23 million purchase of left-back Lucas Digne and the loan signing of Coutinho. The club has also signed the less well-known Kerr Smith from Dundee United for a fee which could reportedly rise to £2 million. Smith made his first-team debut for the Scottish club aged 16 against Rangers, then managed by Steven Gerrard. The defender has since played ten league games for the club and impressed enough to be linked with Manchester United, Chelsea and Everton. Have Villa quietly achieved a transfer coup? To find out more, Frankie was joined by The Courier and Evening Telegraph's Dundee United reporter Ewan Smith. Ewan explained what Villa fans can expect from their new signing. Two lifelong Aston Villa fans take a light-hearted look at the highs & lows of supporting the world's best football team. Everton v Aston Villa turned out to be a real physical battle, with the centre of the pitch particularly congested. Despite that, Villa managed to gain a 1-0 victory at Goodison Park thanks to a fantastic header from Emi Buendia. George & Frankie discuss the recent improvement in Buendia's form and his growing importance for the team. They praise the performance of the entire defence but also find Villa's second-half showing in attack demonstrated the side's frustrating lack of consistency. In the 'Spicy Question' feature, the hosts give their thoughts on Aston Villa's transfer window and what positions the club should try to improve. Two lifelong Aston Villa fans take a light-hearted look at the highs & lows of supporting the world's best football team. Villa made it four losses in a row with a crushing 4-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. The result made little sense considering Villa had multiple chances and were by far the better side in the first-half.
