17 Feb 2022Colin Martin | Pittsburgh Track Club Athlete and 2:20 Marathoner01:17:53

Colin Martin is a top runner of the Pittsburgh area who's coached under ex-Olympic Trails Qualifier and founder of Pittsburgh Track Club, Juris Silenieks. Colin's most recent performances include a 2:20 debut marathon at the 2021 Philadelphia Marathon, a 4:20 mile, and an 8:23 3k. The best is yet to come for this running talent with big goals for the future, the main focus being to qualify for the Olympic Trials in a (tentatively) fall marathon attempt. Watch out for him as well as Alex Archer and Nick Wolk, his training partners from the Pittsburgh Track Club. They'll be doing some crazy things in the not-so-distance future.

22 Aug 2022Matt Fox | Founder of Sweat Elite, 2:20 Marathoner, and Ex-Professional Mid-Distance Athlete00:40:58

Matt Fox is the founder of the well-known company Sweat Elite, the first running organization to fill the gap for coverage of the professional running (and triathlon) scenes. The brand gained enormous traction, particularly as a result of the notorious workout videos posted on their YouTube channel. Matt has had on some very famous athletes including the likes of Paul Chelimo, Parker Stinson, Sara Hall, Andy Butchart, and many more. His most viewed video to date--with over 1.6 MILLION views--was one filmed of Paul Chelimo which, admittedly, I have watched SEVERAL times. Outside of his growing success with Sweat Elite, Matt boasts some very impressive PRs, running as fast as 1:48.36 for the 800-meter run in 2010--during his professional career from 2006-2014--and more recently, 2:20:46 at the 2021 Indianapolis Marathon. Not to mention, in 2009 and 2011, he placed fifth TWICE in the 800-meter at the Australian Open Track and Field Championships. Now, his eyes are set on the Berlin Marathon where he will be attempting to break the 2:20 barrier and run under 2:18.

29 Aug 2022Zach Case | 3rd Place Finisher of the 2022 Cleveland Marathon (2:38 DEBUT)00:57:54

Zach Case has always been speedy since his start in the sport, repping PRs of 1:57.58 in the 800m (T&F), 26:29 in the 8k (XC), and recently, 2:38:51 in the marathon. When I heard that he wanted to race at the Cleveland Marathon, I jumped at the opportunity to be his coach given it would be his very first marathon; also, I knew that he would most definitely be ripping a fast time. Sure enough, about 4 months later and he had run 2:38:51 for 3rd place.

In this episode, we reflect on his training leading into the Cleveland Marathon, his race-day experience, and our overall thoughts on how it all went. I also share my screen and go through the training plan I curated for him, explaining my thought process behind the design.

As always, go follow Zach on his social media:

03 Oct 2022Chris Naimoli | 6th Place Finisher and 2nd in M40-44 at Ironman Maryland (9:05:01)01:12:01

Chris Naimoli recently finished his second Ironman in an astonishing time of 9:05:01, placing 6th overall and 2nd in his age group (M40-44). Mind you, his triathlon career is just beginning... In addition to this success in the triathlon scene, Chris has had a very successful career as a masters runner, winning the 2019 Masters 15k Championship in Tulsa, OK with a time of 48:37 (5:13/mi). He's also dropped a 24:33 8k and 15:35.55 5k since then, as well as many other victories on the master's circuit. The only reason he ever tried a triathlon in the first place was because of running-induced injuries, so we all know where his heart lies... Over the last couple of years, he has also developed a strong squad of runners under his coaching, referred to now as the Naimoli Ninjas... yeah, pretty sick name, isn't it? Many of his athletes are seeing breakthroughs as of late, and things are looking up for the Ninjas as we head into the end of 2022 and the start of 2023.

In this episode, it's just me! I give an update on where I'm at in my comeback from a lower back injury I sustained a few months back as well as my outlook on the future. 05 Dec 2022Dr. Lisa DPT | Physical Therapist for Runners and Instagram Superstar01:18:09

Dr. Lisa (DPT) is a physical therapist who has helped over 1200 PEOPLE in her time as a physical therapist, largely through her website. Her website offers five different programs to cover all the bases as well as personalized coaching, a free movement screening, and a one-hour consultation. Recently--and by recently I mean literally within the last week or so--these programs have been consolidated under a new membership program where you can gain access to ALL of her programs and services. Many of you may know Lisa by her Instagram, given she has a following of over 106,000 people!!! Her Instagram page covers anything and everything PT-related, including mobility, strength, form, and even nutrition to some degree. I myself have become a huge fan of her and the content she produces on her Instagram so all of you should check her out.

In this chat, we talk about all things PT as they relate to running, discussing common misconceptions, the common injuries runners face, top-tier (and bottom-tier) strength exercises (sorry clamshells), the highs and lows of being a PT, and much more.

05 Sep 2022Cole Bishop | Runner-up of the Laurel Highlands Ultra 70.501:24:58

Cole Bishop has always gravitated towards the trails ever since late high school; his love for the trails grew ever stronger as he continued to improve during his time running at the University of Pittsburgh for the club team. Many people, including myself, would consider Cole to be a "soul-runner" and perhaps a bit on the crazy side too (lol) given his crazy running ventures! He'll go out and be on his feet for 3+ hours on trails, no problem. One day, he went to Frick Park and ran 66 miles over the course of the day, starting bright and early and finishing at dawn. Another day, he ran a marathon early into a training block out of the blue. This last year, he ran a marathon on a 200-meter INDOOR TRACK which is 211 laps (yep). The crazy ventures are quite abundant; just see for yourself by going on his Strava (it's worth it). More recently, he ran the Laurel Highlands Ultra 70.5 in a time of 12:12:47 for second place, absolutely BALLING out and closing in sub-7 miles during the last bit of the race. We discuss this in great detail during our chat. Give this one a listen; perhaps by the end of it, you'll understand how someone can put themselves through the torture of 70.5 miles of hilly, grueling trail-running. Granted, I still can't fathom it myself.

10 Oct 2022Matt Fox | Post-Berlin Marathon (Round Two)00:54:25

About three weeks back, Matt Fox raced at the Berlin Marathon. Although it was not the race he wanted due to the onset of hamstring issues as early as 10 kilometers in, he was still able to come away with a time of 2:24:37. However, we all know that he has a sub 2:20 in him without a doubt!!! He now has his eyes set on the Seville Marathon on February 19, 2023, and will be gunning for the elusive sub 2:20.

Today, we talk about his race, his outlook for the future, his coaching for Best Athletics, and more about his company, Sweat Elite. If you haven't listened to the last chat I had with Matt, I'd recommend listening to that one first: https://open.spotify.com/episode/5EIwnln4LATXC4Hicjrf0B?si=5d913074a0d743e5.

23 Apr 2022David Lefkowitz | Club Runner for William & Mary and Creator/Writer of Reasonably Speedy Magazine01:20:05

Are you human unlike the sub-elite guys I've talked to up to this point? If so, you'll be able to relate to the things discussed on this podcast. David Lefkowitz is a man of many talents: he's a guitarist/musician, runner, music director, and avid journalist for both Reasonably Speedy (a magazine that covers the NIRCA club running scene) and Nightswimming (a music-related magazine). In this podcast episode, we largely talk about his Reasonably Speedy magazine which has helped to shine a light on us lovely club runners; we hit on his vision for the future of the magazine, how it came to be, and how he has run and sustained it as an entirely solo endeavor. We also talk about how he got into running, something that only really happened as of last year, as well as our thoughts on NIRCA as an organization and what we think could be improved upon. This is a good one. I really enjoyed our talk and I think you will too, so listen in!

24 Oct 2022Ethan Hermann | 4:08 Miler / 1:06:47 Half Marathoner and Naimoli Ninja00:58:43

Ethan Hermann was an athlete for Philly Runner Track Club (PRTC) over the last several years while studying at Drexel University. Ethan was always a solid runner dating back to his time as a high school athlete, but in more recent years, he has taken his running to the next level after being picked up by coach Chris Naimoli, dropping four HUGE personal bests in 2021...

  • 14:28.41 5k @ the Trials of Miles - May 15, 2021
  • 4:08.97 mile @ the John Hay Distance Festival (6th overall) - June 4, 2021
  • 50:27 10-mile @ the Philadelphia Broad Street 10-Miler - Oct 10, 2021
  • 1:06:47 half marathon @ the Philadelphia Half Marathon (8th OVERALL!) - Nov 20, 2021

Yeah... the man went OFF!!! Maybe it's the magic of being a Naimoli Ninja, but who knows??? Or, perhaps it's just building consistency block after block with no gimmicks?? Nahhhhh, it couldn't be that. Impossible!!! Currently, he is training out of Cardiff, Wales, under a local club with the goal of building a big base so he can be ready to crush it in 2023.

08 Aug 2022Zach Michon | 4:00 Miler of Philadelphia Runner Track Club00:39:17

Zach Michon is a member of the Philadelphia Runner Track Club who is in hot pursuit of the sub-4 mile barrier, having run a 4:00.53 mile at the 2022 Delaware Mile Challenge, and several more low-4 attempts before then. However, Zach was always a talented athlete tracing back to his starting years in the sport, finishing his freshman year of high school with a 4:26 mile PR and continuing to improve gradually year by year. After his senior year at Robbinsville High School, Zach had run 4:13 in the 1600m and 9:27 in the 3200m, catching the attention of Coach Glavin of Saint Joseph's University who later recruited him onto the team. Turns out, Coach Glavin knew what he was doing; Zach went on to take down three school records by the time his collegiate career ended in 2021, running 8:05.62 in the indoor 3000m, 13:53.05 in the outdoor 5000m, and 16:51.23 in the outdoor 4xMile Relay. Not to mention, he was also a five-time Atlantic 10 Champion. Coming out of college, Zach joined PRTC and has been dropping some pretty insane performances ever since including a 23:38 8k for 2nd place at the 2021 Rothman 8k and of course, his 4:00.53 mile.

If you somehow missed it, Zach Michon was solely on my podcast for the clout (lol)... So go follow him on Strava and start SMASHING that kudos button! I want you guys bombarding the comment sections of his workouts.

28 Jan 2022Dylan Gearinger | 2nd Place Finisher of the 2021 AACR Philadelphia Marathon (2:14:53)01:28:49

The man hates half tights. He smashes crazy mileage weeks. The savage rarely follows people on Strava-even his closest friends... He hates tempos (especially on the road) while also loving the marathon distance and running a 2:14 at the 2021 Philadelphia Marathon. It's Dylan Gearinger folks. He's got some spicy PR's that are begging to be broken in 2022: 14:13 5k, 30:17 10k, an unofficial 66:30 half (run in the first half of the Philly Marathon), and his 2:14 marathon. Keep your eyes out for him because big things are coming for this man! You know what to do... go give him a follow on his Strava/Instagram and start smashing that kudos.

24 Mar 2022Juris Silenieks | World Record Holder, 2020 Olympic Trials Qualifier, and Founder of Pittsburgh Track Club01:20:00

Juris Silenieks is the founder of the Pittsburgh Track Club (PTC) and currently coaches Pine Richland High School as well as some individuals (including past guest Colin Martin of PTC Elite). Juris has always wanted to go fast as you'll learn in this chat, tracing back to his high school years with North Hills where he posted a 9:15 2-Mile at the 2010 PIAA Track and Field State Championships. Since then, he continued to improve with Syracuse University where he ran times of 4:14.80 in the mile, 8:17 in the 3k, 14:28 in the 5k, and 30:26 in the 10k. A couple of years after graduating and Juris decided to run a marathon, first running a 2:24 but then really hammering down and qualifying for the trials with a 2:17:37 at the 2018 Philadelphia Marathon. A couple of years later after having run at the Olympic Trials, Juris founded PTC and it has grown ever since. 19 Sep 2022Billy Caldwell | Head Coach for East Carolina University XC and Ex-Pitt Athlete00:51:26

Billy Caldwell graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 2018 and acquired his masters in Exercise Science from Pitt in the following two years. Billy reps some very fast times during his time as an athlete for Pitt T&F and XC from 2014-2018, including as fast as 1:53.55 in the 800m (T&F) and 24:54.4 in the 8k (XC). During his time acquiring his masters, he worked as a volunteer assistant coach from 2018-2020 for Pitt. He also worked at two speed-development-based companies in these two years, Faster Performance (in 2018) and UPMC Sports Performance (in 2019). Having gotten his masters, Billy took on an assistant coaching position for Robert Morris University for two seasons, coaching Martha Gardner to a school-record in the 3000m steeplechase. Having had good success there and with an opening at East Carolina University, Billy was able to take on the head coaching position for the cross country program and also the assistant coaching position for track and field. 10 Nov 2022Patrick Lister | Marathoner, Physical Therapist, and Past Competitive Bodybuilder (COACHING CALL)01:08:24

Patrick Lister is a physical therapist, based out of central PA, who helped me get back from a couple of injuries during my time on the University of Pittsburgh's club running team. Lucky for me, Patrick was looking for more structured training after having missed his goal of running under 3:15 for a couple of years, and next thing you know I was coaching him for the Pocono Mountains Marathon on 10/15/22. In his build-up, I introduced him to a lot of new stimuli, including threshold runs which he had never done before! He came away with TWO nice PRs from the block, including a 1:29:20 at the Harrisburg Half Marathon followed by a 3:18:53 at the Pocono Mountains Marathon, both of which were PRs by over a MINUTE! Mind you, we both know he has a LOT more in him at both distances, having been under the weather for his half marathon and experiencing nasty cramps in his marathon. Interestingly enough, Patrick was a BODYBUILDER, weighing in at 230 POUNDS during his peak year in the sport; absolutely INSANE!!! He shared some really interesting stories about his bodybuilding years, so you GOTTA stick around until the end. There's a gem of a story in there that you HAVE to hear...

19 Jun 2023Patrick Lister | 3:11:42 for Sixth Overall at the 2023 Gettysburg Marathon (COACHING CALL)00:41:30

Back when I lived in York, PA, Patrick was my physical therapist on several occasions, helping me to bounce back from persistent knee issues. After talking about his goals in the marathon, performance stagnation, and the fact that he’d never done a tempo/threshold workout, I knew that he could drastically improve. So, I offered to coach him.

Luckily for me, Patrick took me up on my offer. His first marathon build went well, but the race didn’t go as planned due to unforeseen (crippling) GI issues, finishing the 2022 Pocono Mountains Marathon Race Festival in 3:18:52 for third place overall (still a PR, though!). You can hear our conversation on that buildup and race here.

However, a baller man such as Patrick doesn’t get discouraged for long; within a day or two of the race, he was hungry for more. We both knew he had much more in him. Next thing you know, it was April 30, 2023, and Patrick was crossing the finish line of the Gettysburg Marathon in 3:11:42 for sixth overall. This was over a 7-minute PR! Enjoy our conversation…

For those curious, here are his training plans for both marathons:

30 Jul 2022Lauren Goss | Pennsylvania 5K Record Holder and Ex-Professional Triathlete00:40:00

Unlike a lot of professional runners who come on to the scene, Lauren Goss comes from a deep background in triathlon, having been a pro triathlete for over 10 years starting in 2010 and coming away with 11 70.3 victories and several other big-time wins. Her career in triathlon ended abruptly in tragedy when she caught a doping ban for an extremely unfortunate situation involving too much THC in the cream she was using on her ankle. Over the next two years, she had a kid, started up a coaching company with her ex-husband, and decided to get into the pro running scene. Ever since, she's had great success, holding personal bests of 4:45 (mile), 15:16 (5k), and 31:49 (10k); the 4:45 mile (for the win) was run literally 20 minutes after her 15:16 5k where she cashed in $20,000 for the PA record... Lauren Goss can do it all folks. Listen in if you want to hear how to be a supermom and more; this is a good one!!!
