17 May 2022 | Professor Mair Culbreth ~ University of Wisconsin, Neuro Pilates program | 00:47:00
When we think about people practicing the Pilates method or Contrology, most likely we imagine heathy bodies engaging their musculature and employing their minds to get the most out of each class. But what happens if the brain is impaired by disease or injury, is it possible for the body to still get the benefits of Pilates?
03 May 2022 | Eva Rincke ~ Author, The Joseph Pilates Biography (Part One) | 00:58:09
The Pilates book list is growing and in case you don’t have Eva Rincke’s biography on Joseph Pilates, I highly recommend it.

31 May 2022 | Alison Jones ~ Curator, Knockaloe Visitor Center, Isle of Man | 00:38:07
When Joseph Pilates was interned at Camp Knockaloe on the Isle of Man during WWI, little could he imagine that over a century later, a museum would be built very near where he was interned. The Knockaloe Visitor Center took almost ten years from its concept to its grand opening in 2019. At the helm of this visionary project is our guest today, Alison Jones. Although we know that Joe Pilates was interned at Camp Knocklaoe, there is a larger story here and Alison is going to share it with us.

12 Jul 2022 | Gordon Firemark ~ Copyright Attorney | 00:38:09
As many of you know, there is an aspect of the Pilates industry that involves law suits about intellectual property, copyrights, trademarks, patents and public domain. I thought it important for all of us to learn about these legal terms because so many of us teach online as well as in person and may not be aware of how to protect ourselves.
26 Jul 2022 | Christina Gadar ~ Open Access Pilates Archives | 01:04:19
If someone wants to learn the Pilates method, he or she most likely will sign up for a classical or modern Pilates class. However, before there was classical or modern, there was just Joe’s method that he called Contrology, but for some his work is also referred to as “Archival Pilates.” This term means that Joe’s exercises are taught and practiced exactly as he documented and demonstrated. But does anyone “own” these archival exercises? Well, no, they do not. If someone were to search out a studio that offers archival Pilates lessons taught on replicas of Joe’s apparatus designs, they might find a Pilates teacher like Christina Gadar, our guest today. Christina is a Second generation Pilates instructor who not only teaches Joe’s work at her own space, Gadar Pilates in Sarasota, Florida, but after almost two years of research has created an online educational platform called, Open Access Pilates Archives. It’s her mission to introduce Joe’s original work to Pilates teachers and enthusiasts by demonstrating the archival method and she also includes her own notations. Christina is the author of six books and the creator of the Pilates Animals Workout for children.
09 Aug 2022 | Nancy Chin ~ Owner, Pilates Avenue Los Gatos, Full hip replacement | 00:32:37
Our guest today is Nancy Chin, owner of Pilates Avenue Los Gatos in the city of Los Gatos, California. She is a graduate of the Vintage Pilates program called, The Work. Last summer, Nancy had a life changing experience that impacted her own Pilates practice and gave her an entirely new understanding of the body - especially, the pelvic region. After many years of dealing with an extremely painful hip, Nancy decided to have her hip replaced. I’m not sure if there are statistics that show the number of Pilates instructors who have hip replacements, but I thought Nancy would be the perfect person to take us through the surgery, the post surgical phase and if the Pilates method had assisted in recovering her balance, strength and mobility.
23 Aug 2022 | George Tingo ~ Are you an Entrepreneur? | 00:47:30
Entrepreneurship. What is that exactly? And what does it have to do with the Pilates Method?
06 Sep 2022 | Gwen Miller ~ Safe Movement for All Spines | 00:41:22
There is no machine that man has invented that can compete with the complexity of our own human spine. The Spine is a masterpiece of science and art. A pillared tapestry of bones, muscles, joints, nerves and connective tissue. But sometimes our spines fail us, they either can no longer keep us upright or disease has decreased normal range of motion or there is simply the pain of wear and tear. However, there might be help for these types of issues, and with us to discuss them is Gwen Miller, an integrated therapist who specializes in spinal pathology. Gwen has developed, written and taught an array of continuing education workshops and courses on various spinal pathologies such as scoliosis and osteoporosis. Gwen is also a published author. North Atlantic Books, a subsidiary of Penguin Publishing will release Gwen’s book, Safe Movement for All Spines, A guide to spinal anatomy and how to work with 21 spine and hip conditions in the spring of 2023.

Jennifer DeLuca, owner of BodyTonic Pilates Gymnasium in Brooklyn, NY. Jennifer began her Pilates life in 1985 at the esteemed High School for the Performing Arts in New York City. 18 Oct 2022 | John Vignola ~ Pilates Civilian | 00:44:08
This podcast has featured First Generation Pilates teachers, Second Generation teachers, authors, photographers, equipment owners and even a Pilates historian, but I’ve yet to feature just a regular guy who has taken a liking to the Pilates method. I thought it might be interesting for us to hear from a Pilates civilian, if you will, who also happens to be my BIL - brother-in-law, John Vignola or JV, as everyone calls him. When I was healing from Covid, my sister and JV were so gracious in allowing me to recover at their house. On the days I felt strong enough, I’d work with JV and teach him some of the mat exercises and stretches to help him free up his chronic achy low back. As an lifelong athlete, beginning with high school and college gymnastics, JV spent decades weight training and body building. However, a sports injury he sustained over 28 years ago never fully healed, that is, until I introduced him to the Pilates mat work. Stunned by the immediate results, JV wanted more and joined one of my weekly mat classes. For those of you who may have people in your lives that still think Pilates is really best suited for professional dancers or athletes, please have them listen to this interview. This episode is dedicated to just regular guys and gals, who if interested in devoting time and effort, will get tremendous benefits thru practicing the Pilates Method. You might say, this Method is your true friend with benefits!
01 Nov 2022 | Pat Guyton ~ In the Elder’s words | 01:16:16
Second Generation Pilates instructors, like myself are referred to as such because we’ve had the privilege of learning the Method from one of Joseph Pilates’ disciples. But there are a handful of us who have had the opportunity to work with more than one disciple and and one of those instructor’s is my guest today. Her name is Pat Guyton. Though Pat wouldn’t begin her Pilates journey until 1984, she actually met Bruce King 1976, the first of 3 Joe Pilates disciples that she would eventually, work with. Then in 1992, she met and began learning Pilates with the second disciple, Kathy Grant and then Ron Fletcher in 1995 - these 3 First Generation teachers, among others who studied with Joe, are known to us as the Pilates Elders. Of the three teachers, Ron Fletcher had the biggest impact on Pat. She spent thirteen years working for and along side him. She completed over 90 workshops from 1995 - 2006. So impressed Ron was in Pat’s diligence and hard work, she became a senior teacher, then he named her master teacher as well as an assistant for his Ron Fletcher method. She was also awarded a Certificate of Merit by Ron in 1997 and 2006.
15 Nov 2022 | Roberta Gratz ~ Co-Owner of Gratz Industries (Rebroadcast, 2018) | 00:26:30
My guest today is Roberta Gratz, co-owner of Gratz Industries and wife of the late Donald Gratz, whose father Frank along with a business partner opened a custom metal fabrication business Treitel/Gratz in New York City in the 1920’s. When Mr. Tretial moved on, Frank renamed the business Gratz Industries, Inc. and continued to fabricate sculptures, metal furniture and produce industrial design prototypes for many of the worlds top designers. Donald, Frank’s younger son joined his father after finishing college and a stint in the Army. At one point in the mid 1960’s one aspect of their metal furniture business began to slow down leaving room for a unique but untested type of business.
29 Nov 2022 | Carla Harris ~ Executive Director, Pilates Method Alliance | 00:42:47
The Pilates Method Alliance had its beginnings in 2001. Kevin Bowen and Colleen Glenn, both Pilates teachers, shared a mutual interest in preserving Joe’s Method. So they invited Pilates teachers, including the First Generation - Ron Fletcher, Mary Bowen, Kathy Grant, Lolita San Miguel and even Romana Kryzanowska, though she didn’t attend. Also, equipment company owners, Ken Endelman and Moria Stott. They all met in Miami, Florida to form an organization and they set out to create a curriculum that would be the industry’s standard for certifying potential Pilates teachers. The PMA has had its ups and downs but has managed to survive for these last two decades. Enter Carla Harris. Hired in 2021 to step into the executive director role, Carla is determined to take the PMA in another direction that is more reflective of today's Pilates community.
13 Dec 2022 | Mary Bowen ~ The most senior Pilates Elder | 00:44:16
As Season Four comes to a close, I thought it only fitting as we began the season with a First Generation Pilates teacher that we book end it with another. She is the most senior of our Pilates elders and is none other than Mary Bowen. Mary has taught the Contrology system for the last forty seven years. She is also a trained Jungian psychoanalyst and cleverly blended the two practices, naming it Pilates Plus Psyche which she continues to teach. Mary shares her wisdom and encouragement to the many generations of Pilates teachers who have come after her.

06 Jun 2023 | Mary Kelly ~ The Counter Lawsuit | 00:30:48
As you may recall, in 2000 the Pilates community experienced a collective sigh as the Pilates trademark was litigated in a court of law. However, this lawsuit resulted in the Pilates name not deemed proprietary. Now, in 2023, there is yet, another Pilates lawsuit pending, and my guest today Mary Kelly is right smack in the middle of it. Boston born, Mary, after discovering Pilates in 2008, went on to certify through Romana’s Pilates in 2016. I’ve asked Mary to share her perhaps cautionary story, and though it may give you pause, it’s important that our community understands what is at stake.
20 Jun 2023 | Justin Cottle ~ The Hands | 00:52:57
Our hands. How often do you think about your hands and all they do for you each and everyday? We put them to work the moment we get out of bed until we turn the lights off at night. Our hands grab, wave, lift, hold, caress..and in addition, our wrists and arms allow us to practice for example, the Long Stretch series on the Reformer, or the Pull Up on the Wunda chair. Did you know that the forearm alone has over twenty muscles? Though crucial to everyday activities, our hands don’t get all that much attention. Joe understood this and invented devices to help strengthen fingers, hands and wrists. The Hands-Tens-O-meter and the Bean Bag roll up device can be found in many Pilates studios, and who knows what else Joe Pilates would have invented had he lived longer.
04 Jul 2023 | Carrie Miller ~ Pilates and Sound healing | 00:36:40
Healing is a word that’s tossed around a lot, even in the Pilates community. But what constitutes healing and how do we know if healing is taking place? There are many paths to healing, and the melodic sound and vibrational quality of crystal bowls is such a path. Here to explain about this growing field is Carrie Miller, a Pilates teacher who teaches Pilates in Scottsdale, Arizona and has added sound healing into her teaching.
18 Jul 2023 | Pat Guyton & Kevin Bowen ~ If Joe Pilates only knew... | 00:58:22
In this episode, we’re going to hear from two very influential Pilates educators, Pat Guyton and Kevin Bowen. You may recall from last season listening to the wonderful Pat Guyton and if you’ve been following me for a few years, you might have heard my radio interview with Kevin Bowen on KPCA-Petaluma. Pat and Kevin have known and worked with each other ever since Kevin founded the Pilates Method Alliance in 2000. And both of my guests have gone on to teach and mentor Pilates teachers around the globe leaving lasting impressions on all of their students. This interview may be somewhat provocative because we’ll be touching on the unrest surrounding the PMA, little known tidbits about the First generation teachers, and the current state of our Pilates community.
01 Aug 2023 | Gwen Miller ~ Author, Safe Movement for All Spines | 00:48:13
Now part of the Penguin Random House Author club, Gwen Miller is all smiles and is here to share what it’s like to be a new published author. Last season, Gwen helped us understand about various spinal pathologies and how she was preparing for the publication of her upcoming book, Safe Movement for All Spines. Today, I thought we’d like to hear from Gwen again, about how it felt to see her book in print, what the response has been and what she hopes to accomplish with her book. 29 Aug 2023 | Sonje Mayo ~ Carrying Joe’s message forward | 00:36:31
In this episode, Sonje Mayo, a Pilates educator and physical therapist talks about how she’s combines her experiences as a Joe Pilates student with her physical therapy background. In 2018 when All Things Pilates was a live radio show, Sonje was a guest and I and my listeners learned a bit about her. For instance, we learned about Sonje moving from her South African home to dance in England and then to NewYork City to continue her dance career. She also told us about studying dance at the famed Martha Graham school and how she discovered Joe Pilates. Like many dancers injured and/or simply needing a conditioning method, Sonje found herself at the Controlgoy studio. Over a period of two years she learned the Contrology system from Joe Pilates. Armed with her extensive education, Sonje travels around the world helping Pilates teachers understand how to get the most out of the Method.
15 Aug 2023 | Marcela Zia ~ Empower Pilates Apparatus company | 00:38:03
Our guest today is Marcela Zia, a former professional ballet dancer, who now represents Empower Pilates, a classical Pilates apparatus company in Brazil. Based on Joe Pilates original designs, but also responsive to the teachers who use the equipment, this company is the latest in the growing need for quality classical apparatus. When I refer to Joe’s apparatus as “classical” for those who don’t know, it implies that Joe’s designs are carefully preserved with minimal changes, if any. I remember vividly Romana sharing with us that she would monthly or at least regularly, visit the Gratz Industries factory, at that time, in Long Island City, Queens to make sure they were complying with Joe’s specifications. I’ve asked our guest, Marcela to tell us about Empower Pilates, and what the reception has been like especially, here in America.

05 Dec 2023 | Paula Mourin ~ Pilates Ministry | 00:51:10
This is a beautiful account of how Joe’s work has helped to heal the body, mind and soul. Today’s episode is a touching one. It involves the church, the prison system and a woman who took her own suffering and discovered how the power of Pilates could save her and others. Anna shares more memories of her time with Joe Pilates.

Florida. For the last 2 years, Bela has been studying the Pilates Method at her mom’s studio, Delfina Pilates. I asked Bela if she’d share with us why in the life of a busy teenager, she makes time for her Pilates practice.

30 Jul 2024 | Gareth Cornwall, Psychotherapist ~ Joseph H. Pilates, Patient | 00:58:36
Many believe it’s the mind that builds the body. Joe Pilates understood this, but did he understand his own mind? On this 100th episode of All Things Pilates, I wanted to present something a little different for you. Last year, Gareth Cornwall, a psychotherapist who is our guest today, sent me an email expressing his appreciation for this podcast. Well, it got me thinking about the role our psychology plays in the health of our body and I wondered how Gareth might have treated someone like Joseph Pilates who experienced so much childhood trauma and adversities later in life. So on this special episode, Gareth will take us through some of the process of what it might have been like had he treated or even just made observations about Joseph Pilates. As Gareth says, “Part of reclaiming life after trauma is a return to control - and certainly 'Contrology' seems to have a really positive impact on that journey.
27 Aug 2024 | John Vignola ~ Pilates Civilian (Part 2) - Fully recovered | 00:48:59
One of the most well received episodes from last season was with John Vignola and if you haven’t heard his first interview, briefly, he spoke about his journey from a severe back injury in the 1990’s to taking a chance with the Pilates Method. He saw many specialists who helped a little or not at all. Then with a few little nudges from me, his SIL (sister in law) he discovered the power of the Method and how it helped him become pain-free. Today, he’s back to talk about his full recovery! And I'd like to add, it's not just because JV is family, his message to all of us is a powerful reminder about committing to our health. Here's to your health!
05 Aug 2019 | Dr. Charles Zollner ~ Chiropractor | 00:25:59
Mr. Pilates developed his method in part, by observing feral cats and watching how their spines flexed and extended, and from those observations developed his mat repertoire. Eventually, medical professionals took notice especially, chiropractors. He would go on to share his method with the chiropractic community evidenced by a plaque which hung in his studio. It read: “This is to Certify that Joseph Pilates is awarded this appointment of merit in appreciation of his valued assistance in the presentation of the Post Graduate course of the Academy of Chiropractic, Inc.” Chiropractic is from the Greek, meaning “done by hand.” It is grounded in the principle that the body can heal itself when the skeletal system is correctly aligned and the nervous system is functioning properly. Joining us is Dr. Charles Zollner, a chiropractor, and he’s here to discuss in more detail the benefits of chiropractic care and its connection to the Pilates method.
10 Sep 2024 | Joan Blum ~ Perfection and Performance | 00:38:49
Perfection in life is a double edged sword. Perfection can lead to excellence and mastery, but it can also lead to obsession and anxiety. In the Pilates community, there is not only a hint of perfectionism but an element of performing, as if on a stage in front of an audience. Joan Blum, our guest, is a 25-year Pilates veteran and former professional dancer. I’ve asked Joan to share her thoughts about the need to be perfect and the need to perform which sadly is often encouraged in different sectors of the Pilates industry. This episode touches on First Generation Pilates teacher, Jay Grimes who recently passed away and who contributed so much in helping to maintain the Contrology system.

Let’s face it, though gravity keeps us grounded it also pulls us down, from boobs to butts to bellies… If gravity were a person, you wouldn’t bring it home for Christmas. Susan Temkin, a Pilates student with fire to spare, is here to talk about her experience as a spirited senior living and thriving with Contrology.
22 Oct 2024 | Susannah Cotrone ~ Footwork | 00:43:54
Joining me today to talk about the exercise cornerstone called Footwork is my friend and colleague, Susannah Cotrone, co-owner of Cotrone Pilates in Los Angeles who has her own take on the power of Footwork. When I was going through the certification program with Romana Kryzanowska in 1994, she told us that the Reformer workout always began with Footwork because Joe, while developing his method, created Footwork to help straighten his bowed legs. But he had other ideas as to how Footwork would be beneficial for the body. As we know, he was interested in the body’s full transformation and the Chinese Healing Arts came into play. It’s reported that Joe’s intention of infusing reflexology into the Footwork exercises meant that by massaging the various points in the feet, the internal organs would be stimulated. Additionally, Romana’s view of Footwork was that we could find it throughout the system, no matter which apparatus.

10 Sep 2019 | Ana Caban ~ Balanced Body Brand Ambassador | 00:27:16
The Reformer, the most enduring and popular Pilates apparatus our genius mentor, Jospeh Pilates invented. Originally named, the Universal Reformer, this piece in the Pilates line-up was first built by the inventor himself and his brother, Fred. As the Universal Reformer gained more attention, the demand for it became greater. Romana Kryzanowska, one of Mr. Pilates’ most devoted disciples, continued his teachings on his apparatus at the NYC original studio after Joe passed away. Then in the late 1960’s a fortuitous meeting with Donald Gratz, a metal installation and furniture company owner would set in motion the next generation of apparatus, including the reformer. Now, in 2019, there is yet, another iteration of the classical Pilates reformer, this time, manufactured by Balanced Body, a leader in the Pilates apparatus industry. My guest today is Ana Caban who is the Balanced Body Brand Ambassador for the new Contrology reformer.

02 Oct 2019 | Jack Lanham ~ Classical Pilates studio owner, License to Touch | 00:24:44
Tactile cueing. What is it and when should Pilates instructors use it? And does the decision to use it change if you’re a male instructor? With still a female dominated Pilates clientele are male instructors expected to have to ask permission before they place their hands on clients? Perhaps a consent disclaimer should be included as part of the intact form a client signs before beginning Pilates lessons?

Reiner explored other sports as well, such as rowing and weightlifting, but all of these activities took a toll on his body and his physical pain was constant. There was something missing in his overall body conditioning and after much research he discovered autogenic training, a little known relaxation and mediation practice which helped to soften his overtrained muscles. By sixteen, Reiner began studies in the martial arts of Tai Chi Chuan and Kung Fu and graduated to teaching self-defense to women and children. Then in 1992 while watching television, Reiner saw an advertisement for the Pilates method and he filed the ad away knowing one day he’d try out Pilates. It was 2005 when Reiner finally decided to explore Pilates and bought a Pilates DVD to help him learn on his own. He took to the work immediately and was hooked. Reiner recognized that his previous trainings had prepared him for a career in Pilates and in 2010 he sought out a Pilates certification program called Body Arts Science International, also known as BASI. The following year, Reiner completed BASI’s certification for mat and equipment. There is much more to Reiner's story, tune in to this episode to learn more!

I’d like to begin with a little story. The pelvic girdle is similar to a lead actor in a play. The lead actor sets the tone and calls the shots. But there is also the supporting cast, and just like with the supporting cast, in the body, there are the hands, arms, shoulders, head, the feet, shins, and thighs. But they don’t move correctly until they get their cue from the lead actor, or from what is our topic for today, the pelvic girdle. Joining me in the studio is my guest is Mercy Sidbury and she’ll explain about the anatomy of the pelvic girdle.

What caught Mary’s eye was the accompanying photo of a man of medium height, barelegged, bare chested in tight shorts, canvas shoes, and a lion-like mane of white hair. Something else kept Mary’s attention. “I base my whole method on the baby and the cat, Joe said.” Mary had no baby and no cat, but her intuition told her to go meet him. That was 61 years ago. Mary doesn't hold back and shares stories of her experiences with Joe and Clara...It's a delightful interview, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
