Army life is not necessarily cheap. The music and the fan experience are the most important things. Many people prioritize saving for concert tickets/travel. That said, KPOP is big business and there are a lot of goodies out there. You don’t need them to be a legit fan. You don’t even need to be interested in them. Not at all. But if having some mementos brings you joy and doesn’t break the bank, it can be a fun experience, too. On February 14th, Min Yoongi aka Suga aka AgustD dropped a bomb on the fandom: he's going on world tour. This sent Lia and legions of other Suga biases into a spiral knowing that securing tickets would be tough and the best strategy was leaning into our collective power. It didn't take long for us to discover that suites were available for group purchasing at Oakland Arena--an option once dominated by corporations--but more accessible post-Covid. And as we explored the suite logistics...Bryan achieved a minor celebrity status among those ARMY trying to see Suga X AgustD in the Bay Area. Stanning BTS comes with steep learning curve. One of the things that's initially confusing is all the shorthand used by everyone. At first, Lia and new Afternoona Army International Correspondent, Lexi Jessop, were baffled by the jungles of animal emojis used to discuss BTS. We've now come to appreciate that emojis are great example of symbiotic relationship between BTS and Army: They serve as code, which creates fuzzy feelings like belonging and complicity, shorten and standardize member names on social media, fit within character limits, and have same meaning for i-army, and simplify subtitling. So how did we get here? And do we agree on the conventions? Lexi has mixed feelings on Min Young being a cat, Lia strongly feels that a chipmunk is nothing like a squirrel, and is V ultimately a tiger? A bear? Or is it sort of perfect that he's both? The first in our Kim Namjoon Book Club. We noticed RM reading Almond (Won-Pyong Sohn) in the 2020 In the Soop series. It's the perfect book to jump into for these bonus monthly episodes. Almond tells the story of Yunjae, who at an early age, is diagnosed with Alexithymia, a condition where people are unable to identify or express their feelings (the almond of the title refers to the underdeveloped almond-shaped amygdalae in his brain. As a result, he has a hard time in social situations. Things take a dark turn when he loses his mother and grandma in a violent attack right before high school.
