20 Jul 2018Beyond The Tryptamine Palace | James Oroc ~ ATTMind 7701:04:18

Journalist, photographer, and artist James Oroc was born in the small South Pacific nation of Aotearoa. Since 1998 he has been pursuing and reporting on the cutting edge of extreme sports in more than 40 countries around the globe, his work appearing in magazines, films, and on MTV Sports. He has been a member of the Burning Man community since 1999, and he is also involved in the documentation and advancement of psychedelic culture as one of the first people to ever publically discuss the philosophical and metaphysical implication of 5-MeO-DMT.

His first book, Tryptamine Palace, is a quintessential read for those interested in psychedelic philosophy. It presents his theories on reality, God, quantum mechanics and 5-MeO-DMT that are present in Tryptamine Palace. In this interview, we scratch the surface of those theories but advance beyond the Tryptamine Palace and explore the topics of his most recent book, The New Psychedelic Revolution -- the rich history of visionary art, modern festival culture, the rising popularity of 5-MeO-DMT, and his psychedelic philosophies on the nature of mind.

*Halloween Special 2018*
May Leitz from the Nyx Fears youtube channel joins on the show to talk about why we watch horror films, what personality traits lead us to different styles of horror, our culture's tendencies towards the extreme (such as American 'torture porn'), and the traumatic potential of the modern, quasi-abusive haunted house attractions.

May Leitz, like me, is a nerd for shit and I am happy to share our discussion with y'all.

03 Aug 2018Anti-Aging, BPC-157, and Regenerating The Damaged Body | Patrick Kroupa ~ ATTMind 7801:19:52

Well, this interview is not what you may assume.

It stands out in the repertoire of podcasts that have come before and are likely to go from here. That is because it isn't an interview at all, it's merely a conversation that happened off-the-cuff and just so happened to be recorded. I am releasing it because despite the diffused and tangential nature of the thing, it was fun and informative and because the guest, Patrick Kroupa is a man with much to offer, a formal interview and otherwise.

Patrick Kroupa (also known as Lord Digital, born January 20, 1969) is an American writer, hacker and activist. Kroupa was a member of the legendary Legion of Doom and Cult of the Dead Cow hacker groups and co-founded MindVox in 1991, with Bruce Fancher. He was a heroin addict from age 14 to 30 and got clean through the use of the hallucinogenic drug ibogaine. [wiki]

He is on the show this week to talk about peptides, anti-aging, and the complexities of health in the modern, toxic world.

22 Jun 2018The Archetypal Wounding Of Men | James Hollis PhD ~ ATTMind 7501:08:52

If we want to build a better world, one that is free of the power complexes that subjugate others, it behoves us to address the root of those power complexes. In particular regards to the patriarchy, if we fail to see both the function and the origins of the patriarchy system in the psyche of man, we worsen it at best and, at worst, become power-obsessed oppressors ourselves.

The deep wounding of men by way of a toxic society is at the root of this interview with James Hollis PhD., whose ideas gave me stability in myself as I came to grapple with the pain, shame, and "quiet desperation" I have been carrying in my own life as a man.

06 Jan 2018Integrating Ayahuasca (and "her" voice in your head) w/ Rachel Harris Ph.D. ~ Ep. 6301:06:45

What does ayahuasca integration mean and how do we do it? This is a question our guest for this episode, Rachel Harris Ph.D., has been exploring intensely though research, clinical practice, and her own direct experiences.

Rachel Harris, PhD, although retired now, was a practising psychotherapist for 35 years. She received a National Institutes of Health New Investigator’s Award, has published more than forty scientific studies in peer-reviewed journals, and has worked as a psychological consultant to Fortune 500 companies and the United Nations. She is also the author of the recent book Listening to Ayahuasca.

She is on the show to talk about her research with ayahuasca and what integration means, however, a very interesting tangent-at-depth emerged during the conversation between her and I: hearing voices, in particular hearing the voice of ayahuasca in your head as though it were an entity of external agency and intelligence, during and after the ceremony. To say that this is an intellectually dicey topic in the realms of conventional psychiatry and psychology, might be an understatement, but include in that fact that Rachel herself proposes to hear this voice and it was what guided her along her groundbreaking research and we have thoroughly entered the medical and academic fringe.

I very much enjoyed this connection with Rachel Harris and trust that you will too.
Thanks for listening. Enjoy.

27 Jun 2024cPTSD, The Climate Crisis, and Healing Trauma with Coral Reefs and Ayahuasca | Greg Wrenn (189)01:45:21

We welcome Greg Wrenn to the show to share his experience of complex post-traumatic stress disorder (cPTSD) and how it was that his explorations of coral reefs and journeys with Ayahuasca turned the tide on his lifelong struggle with the condition.

Additionally, as both his experience of and healing from cPTSD is intertwined with his journalism on climate science, we also explore how the ecological and psychological effects of the climate crisis weave into our personal and collective experiences and expressions of trauma.

Enjoy

13 Jan 2023The Business and Practice of Psilocybin Therapy in Jamaica | Justin Townsend ~ ATTMind 17002:11:55

Justin Townsend is the CEO and Head Facilitator at the psilocybin therapy retreat centre MycoMeditations. He is on the show for this episode to explore two topic themes:

  1. The business side of running a successful psilocybin retreat centre in the economic context of the modern corporate world without losing your ethics in the process
  2. The therapeutic framework and philosophy that MycoMeditations holds for their retreats and their guests.

Some of the things we cover on the first side of the conversation: Justin’s journey from the corporate world to running an psychedelic psilocybin therapy retreat centre; psychopathology and integrity in the corporate world, and how good people end up doing bad things; the nuances around running a financially successful psychedelic retreat centre without ethical sacrifices; what it means to be building what they call “gold-standard for group-facilitated psilocybin therapeutics in natural settings”; data propriety; and supporting peer-reviewed research.

In the other half of the conversation we explore: why MycoMeditations holds an entity “non-shamanic” framework for their psilocybin work; how to support someone who has a beyond Western framework experience from a non-shamanic framework; helping to prevent post-psychedelic hypomania from evolving into psychosis; differentiating between psychosis and a “normal psychotomimetic response”; non-pharmacological interventions for psychosis and psychotomimetic responses; as well as The Golden Shadow and the dangers of golden-shadow projection in both psychedelic therapy and spiritual communities.

Enjoy.

23 Apr 2021Global Collapse, Spirituality, and The Birth Of The Future Human | Chris Bache, PhD ~ ATTMind 14201:52:00

Chris Bache PhD has previously been on the show to talk about his work with high dose LSD journeys, out of his book LSD and The Mind Of The Universe. In that book, he discusses visions he had of ‘the birth of the future human’ emerging out of the incredible suffering and challenges of a total, global collapse.

In this interview, Chris outlines why and where he sees this collapse as already having begun and what his LSD journeys into ‘deep time,’ the collective suffering of all humanity, and divine encounters with oneness have revealed about what it will take for humanity to make it through collapse into the future anew. A spiritual approach to the crisis of global collapse.

21 Jun 2019Asking 3 Potent Questions To 8 Psychedelic Luminaries ~ ATTMind 10000:59:32

To acknowledge the celebratory context of this epsiode I had done two things special with it. The first is that I took a pretty long time, in the beginning, to talk about my journey with the podcast (the actual episode starts 12:45, and the interviews at 18:00). Then, the second special thing, instead of one guest, or even two, or even three, there are EIGHT GUESTS!!!! That's right. 8 Guests.

I recorded several short, on location interviews during my travel through Europe in the summer of 2018. Most of them we shot at OZORA FESTIVAL, in Hungary. I had the amazing opportunity to be surrounded by the amazing psychedelic thinkers and researchers and I took that opportunity to ask them some questions. Three questions in fact.

THE 3 QUESTIONS

  • What do you feel is the best use of psychedelics at this time?
  • What does the psychedelic experience show us about what it means to die?
  • What is an area in psychedelic culture that is important but under-represented in the major discourse?

THE 8 GUESTS

(In alphabetical order. head to https://bit.ly/ATTMind100 for further links to their work)

  • Julian Vayne
  • Nikki Wyrd
  • Kilindi Iyi
  • Marta Kaczmarczyk
  • Meriana Dinkova
  • Moudou Baqui
  • Leor Roseman
  • Rosalind Watts

I will let them introduce themselves during the episode, and the structure of the episode be explained in the intro.

Thanks for 100 episodes!

Enjoy.

30 Mar 2018The Science Of Brain Change: Neuroplasticity and Altered Traits | Rick Hanson Ph.D. ~ ATTMind 6901:16:47

A central topic of this podcast is our capacity to change our minds.

I don't mean superficially – "Oh, actually yeah let's go see that movie instead." I mean a more fundamental change, our faculty for shifting our very sense of self and perception of the world around us. This type of change is not just an ethereal alteration of mental processes, but an actual redesigning of neural architecture. Our capacity to create such fundamental changes is due to our brain's ability to redesign its structure, lay new synaptic connections, which is called neuroplasticity.

[This episode was originally released as "The Neurobiology Of Altered Traits"]

The guest for this episode of the podcast is here to tell us how we can change our brains to change our lives and why it works. Welcome to Adventures Through The Mind, world renown neuroplasticity expert, Dr Rick Hanson.

Rick Hanson is a psychologist, Senior Fellow of the Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley, and New York Times best-selling author. His books are available in 26 languages and include Hardwiring Happiness, Buddha’s Brain, Just One Thing, and Mother Nurture. He’s been an invited speaker at NASA, Oxford, Stanford, Harvard, and other major universities, and taught in meditation centres worldwide. His work has been featured on the BBC, CBS, and NPR, and now he is here with us on Adventures Through The Mind.

26 Feb 2021Using Psychedelics To Dismantle Racism | Akua Ofosuhene ~ ATTMind 13902:05:43

Akua Ofosuhene is on the show to discuss the role psychedelics can play in dismantling racism in society by helping us learn to let go of the conditioned beliefs we are taught to hold about race in general.

We also talk about how the dismantling of racism is actively harmed by the politics of outrage being carried into our personal relationships, and how getting beyond racism as a society can only truly come about in a cultural context based on the sacredness of the individual.

09 Nov 2018Altered States Of Entrapment | Bernhard Guenther ~ ATTMind 8601:18:21

Bernhard Guenther joins us on Adventures Through The Mind to talk about the 'topic of all topics', the hyperdimensional ecology of entities that influence human life. Furthermore, he takes a deep look at the actual legitimacy of psychedelic 'healing', and its potential dangers insofar as false dawn syndrome, spiritual bypassing, and entity attachment or possession.

Despite how far out these topics may seem, I don't doubt you will find some deeply grounded and practical perspective in this interview, especially in regards to the modern ayahuasca-healing movements

16 Mar 2018The Great Shamanic Debate | James Kent vs. Julian Palmer ~ ATTMind 6801:17:48

Have you ever experienced a psychedelic encounter with a plant spirit or an entity?

Have you ever experienced a spirit realm or being healed by a shaman? Have you ever felt as though you invoked some type of divination or noetic insight while on psychedelics? Have you ever wondered if any of that was real or just merely a hallucination?

The increasing popularity of using psychedelic substances within so-called shamanic ceremonies has introduced ideas and beliefs into the modern world that push conceptual limits of the rational mind. The rise of plant shamanism is a cultural force to be reckoned with and that which we encounter with shamanism feels urgent and real. Yet, however real the experiences with a shamanic encounter may feel, the question still remains: how real is it, really?

I asked Julian Plamer and James Kent to come on the show to debate  on this question:

"What do you believe is the fundamental nature of that which arises within a psychedelic experiences, in particular regards to what is often called The Shamanic paradigm, including the existence of a spirit realm, encounters with plant spirits or entities and the capacity to invoke healing or divination within a psychedelic experiences by way of this paradigm?"

It's a juicy one.
Enjoy

Dr. Tim Read is a psychiatrist, psychotherapist, and author based in London.

He joins us on the show to discuss the deep unconscious, complexes, being triggered, and why we need a new way to treat mental illness. We talk about the difference between spiritual crisis and psychosis; how modern psychiatry is broken; and why psychiatrists should undergo psychedelic therapy.

Additionally, we explore the difference between being in process and processing; how our triggers are an opportunity to step into our healing journey; the role of relationships in our healing; how to help shift culture and community to better support people in crisis; how to support people in psychotic delusion (without colluding in their delusions); and the point at which we should involve psychiatric intervention.

14 Sep 2018Psychedelic Feminism | Zoe Helene ~ ATTMind 8101:18:51

Zoe Helene of Cosmic Sister comes on the show to talk about Psychedelic Feminism

“The ultimate goal of psychedelic feminism is to promote rapid (cultural) evolution from within—starting with women. Females make up half the human population. We know it’s way past time we stepped up and took our share of the decision-making power—and yet we haven’t. Why is that? What are the “whys?” and what can we do to work through them? My work with women and psychedelics is about exploring those complex, multifaceted, interconnected “whys?” with sacred plants and fungi, our evolutionary allies from the natural world.” – Zoe Helene

06 Nov 2020Being A Psychedelic Person In The Modern Political Landscape | Bett Williams ~ ATTMind 13201:25:09

Bett Williams and I explore a number of issues facing the modern politically switched on psychedelic person. We do so with special reference to the damaging impact of social media technologies on our perceptions,  identity, and  behavior; cultural appropriation within psychedelic ceremony building; and the Dark Side of leftist psychedelic politics. All of which grounded in a discussion around what it means to live psychedelically, as a psychedelic person in relationship with the psilocybin mushroom.

For context,  this interview was recorded a couple months ago and it’s actually just a coincidence (or accidental synchronicity) that it is being released during the week of the 2020 US presidential election. I'm definitely holding a particular curiosity as to how much the ideas discussed in this episode will be relevant or illuminating to the events that are going to follow in the next coming weeks. But that is a topic for larger wanderings beyond the podcast. I will leave it to the r/ATTMindPodcast subreddit.

In the meantime, though, enjoy this interview with Bett Williams

In this episode, Christopher Bache and I explore the research and exploration that underpins Diamonds from Heaven: a twenty-year journey into 70+ high dose LSD experiences done with the explicit intent to map Consciousness.

We talk about why Bache chose this path, what it was like, and what here learned from it all about Consciousness, psychedelic consciousness, and what it means to be a finite human, nested in a complex web of relationships, defined by its dualist dance for meaning.

26 Apr 2017Virtual Reality and Digital Shamanism w/ Sander Bos ~ Ep. 4600:58:11

As the technology of virtual reality continues to progress, it is important that we look beyond the uses gaming companies, Facebook, and Samsung will develop it for. What happens when the capacity to build a completely immersive and convincing alternate reality lands in the hands of visionary artists and shamanic healers?

For the new moon episode of ATTMind Radio, we welcome Dutch visionary artist Sander Bos to the show. Painter, musician, and reality-engineer, Sander has been exploring the potentials of art to awaken a sense of healing and enlightenment. He explores the role of the shaman as an artistic one and using virtual reality as his medium is seeking to create shamanic healing experiences in digital spaces.

"I am fascinated in building with light [...] a zen garden, a kind of healing space in VR, so you can experience different states of consciousness and different healing experience"

- Sander Bos

25 May 2017Ultra-High Dose Psilocybin and The Future Humanity w/ Kilindi Iyi ~ Ep. 4801:15:43

The late, great Terence McKenna is famous for his suggestion to eat five dried grams of psilocybin mushrooms in silent darkness. Thanks to Terence five dried grams has been a milestone of depth and commitment to psychonauts around the world, an apex of intensity. Then Kilindi Iyi comes along and dismantles the concept of five dried grams as an apex of psilocybin intensity when he begins to speak publicly about his regular use of 30+ dried grams of psilocybin mushrooms.... 30 dried grams of psilocybin mushrooms, an ultra-high dose psilocybin experience.

Our guest for this episode, Kilindi Iyi is a martial arts expert, a (medicinal and culinary) mushrooms grower, and a psychonaut challenging the status quo of the psychedelic community with an outspoken, brazen courage. He joins us on the show to discuss his experiences with these ultra-high dose psilocybin experiences, what brought him to explore so deeply, what it's like to take such a high dose, and what he has gleaned from those experiences about the nature of reality. Most importantly, we talk about what it means to become explorers of the mind by taking entheogens at any dose.

Although much of what we talk about is offers direct insight and wisdom to anyone choosing to explore entheogens, some of it, much like back in Ep.6 with Rak Razam, goes wildly far-out; 30+ dried grams far-out.

26 Apr 2019Ayahuasca, Colonialism, and the Death of a Healer | Kevin Tucker ~ ATTMind 9602:03:46

Kevin Tucker is the author of 'The Cull Of Personality: Ayahuasca, Colonialism, and the Death of a Healer'.

He is on the show to talk to us about the history of resource extraction from the the Amazon, the devastation it wrecked on its peoples, and how he sees that history of extraction alive in the present in the form of the spiritual extractivism around ayahuasca, with the murder of Oliva Arévalo Lomas as an example.

This is a difficult episode to listen to as it contains a lot of hard to hear information such as explicit descriptions of horrendous violence, the unimaginable costs of our modern comforts, and some very divisive perspective on the global spread of ayahuasca.

We also discuss why studies in rats show clear biological effects of microdosing on behaviour, but human studies seem to suggest placebo; a neural level definition of psychedelic microdosing; why microdosing research is being polluted by a lack of specificity; the value of the “psychedelic” effect of psychedelics in their use as a medicine; and why what rats need higher doses of psychedelics than human by weight.

Enjoy!

21 Apr 2023The 6 Pitfalls: Safety and Best Practices for Ayahuasca Facilitators in Non-Traditional Contexts | Jeronimo M.M. ~ ATTMind 17401:46:12

This episode features Jeronimo MM of ICEERS Foundation and explores the potential dangers and pitfalls present for ayahuasca/plant medicine facilitators in non-traditional contexts. Dangers specific to the facilitators, that Jeronimo refers to as The 6 Pitfalls: Sex, Money, Power, Intercultural Relationships, and Legal Situations.

We also do a deep dive into what a “non-traditional context” is and two potential harms that might come up for participants, namely “when the experience is too much” and “Ayahuasca told me that…”

To use Jeronimo’s words from the interview you are about to hear, this episode explores “How to avoid harming people who have put themselves under your care”

We welcome Jeronimo back to Adventures Through The Mind for his fourth feature. His previous episodes were a dedicated interview on the complexity of the ongoing mainstreaming of psychedelics and the others were psychedelic cafes on how to protect from corporate influence and bad actors in the psychedelic scene, and the importance of ethnopharmacology for the future of humanity.

If you are a plant medicine facilitator of any kind or know facilitators, this episode is definitely for you. However, this episode will be relevant to anyone interested in participating in any kind of plant medicine ceremony. As the dangers presented, facilitators are also dangers present to participants under those facilitators’ care. Having a sense of what they are in advance empowers your capacity to better navigate the often murky world of underground facilitation.

...

Importantly, this episode is a vignette into a portion of the 6-month course Jeronimo is putting on through ICEERS titled Increasing the Safety of Ayahuasca Sessions: A harm reduction course for facilitators in non-traditional contexts.

The course begins on May 8 and the admission process ends on April 27. Meaning there is little time left to sign up, if you feel called to do so.

More details (along with a video version of this interview) are available at bit.ly/ATTMind174
Or you can jump right over to the course page by heading to http://iceers.academy/

18 Dec 2020Heightened Sexual Experiences and Psychedelics | Miriam Elyse ~ ATTMind 13401:53:57

What are heightened sexual experiences? How do we access them? How do they relate to our ability to access pleasure, multiple orgasms, and a profound sense of intimacy with ourselves and with others? What do we need to watch out for on our journey of awakening to these heightened sexual experiences in order to stay safe in ourselves and avoid accidentally hurting others? And, what roles do our psychedelic experiences serve in this sexual awakening?

We welcome Miriam Elyse to Adventures Through The Mind to explore these questions and more.

18 Jan 2019The Pan-African Use Of Psychedelic Mushrooms | Darren Spinger ~ ATTMind 9101:04:37

In this (on-location) interview, Darren Springer talks about the ancient history of pan-African psychedelic use and travels forwards through time along the wings of mythology until the myths dissolve into the harsh reality of slavery, racism, and neighbourhoods infused with violence. It is grounded in this reality that Darren shares with us the potential of psychedelics (psilocybin mushrooms in particular) for the healing of historical trauma and the revitalization of black communities in the UK.

08 Dec 2023Integrating Ayahuasca Experiences (And Psychedelics In General) | Mijal Schmidt ~ ATTMind 18301:52:33

This episode is with Mijal Schmidt and presents a rather robust exploration of what psychedelic integration is and the specifics of what an ayahuasca integration requires.

We talk about the importance of good preparation, and what that looks like; various integration practices and activities; the most common challenges in integrating ayahuasca experiences, including integrating HUGE experiences and difficult experiences; the integration of experiences of exogenous material, e.g. entities or absorbing other people’s processes; and how to know when we have successfully completed our integration.

We also explore the difference between psychedelic integration and psychotherapy; learning to accept what is happening in our journeys, even when we don't like it or want it or think it's what we are supposed to be experiencing; as well as how to support someone in a post-psychedelic crisis, and when to intervene for their own safety.

Enjoy!

27 Sep 2019Breaking Convention | Multiple Guests ~ ATTMind 10700:58:36

"Breaking Convention is a biennial multidisciplinary conference on psychedelic consciousness, featuring more than 200 presenters from around the world." It takes place in London, England and is one of the largest psychedelic conferences in the world.

I was quasi-invited to speak (I was invited by a program curator, but wasn't an officially invited speaker) there this year. I decided I would try and harvest the opportunity to be amongst so many luminaries in the psychedelic field by catching as many short interviews as I could in my time there. I got 11. (also, my talk was recorded and they will eventually release it. Also, I do have a transcript that will also be released soon-ish)

Similar to what I did at OZORA Festival for ATTMind 100, I asked them all the same 4 questions:

  1. Who are you and what do you do?
  2. What is the most relevant consideration you are holding at this conference?
  3. What role do you see yourself playing in the psychedelic renaissance?
  4. What role, if any, do you see psychedelics playing in helping humanity respond to any of the many crises we are facing?

There are some nuances to each of these questions that are presented in the (quite long intro). If you would like to breeze through the intro, relevant bits are between 4:25 and 10:110, with the actual interviews starting at 11:55. Of course, please make an effort to watch/listen to the full intro if you are open to it (especially watch it cause I made something special in the intro just for this episode 😉 )

Featured guests listed below.

EPISODE DETAILS

Nicholas P. Money is Professor of Biology and Western Program Director at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He is an international expert on fungal biology and author of popular science books that celebrate the microbial world including his most recent, Molds, Mushrooms, and Medicines: Our Lifelong Relationship with Fungi (2024)

He joins us on the podcast to deep dive into the biology, ecology, and intelligence of fungi. We discuss the body and life cycle of mushrooming fungi; the shape and behaviour of mycelium; how fungi are more similar to humans than they are to plants; and even a critical take on the efficacy of so-called "functional mushrooms".

We also explore the thesis he put forth in his 2021 paper, Hyphal and mycelial consciousness: the concept of the fungal mind. With that, we discuss fungi consciousness; the conscious intelligence of mycelium; how all organisms have consciousness; why science and society needs to NOT recognize the consciousness of non-human life; and whether our psilocybin experiences encounters with a fungal mind. We even get into debating the value of the human species on the other side of climate change.

Enjoy!

18 May 2023Using Psychedelic Molecules to Explore Alternate Worlds | Andrew Gallimore, PhD ~ ATTMind 17602:07:21

In this episode, we welcome back Dr. Andrew Gallimore to explore the content of his new book 'Reality Switch Technologies: Psychedelics as Tools for the Discovery and Exploration of New Worlds'.

We discuss how the brain builds an experiential world model from patterns of information at the neural level; how all of those worlds are correlated with specific neural patterns; how we can disturb that neural pattern to encounter new worlds; essentially, using psychedelic molecules to explore alternate worlds.

We explore how different classes of psychedelics affects the brain differently and thus switch us to different potential worlds, focusing specifically on the neural and world-switching effects of classical psychedelics, tropane alkaloids, and ketamine.

We also explore why the brain doesn’t care if its models are true, only if their adaptive; how perception of reality flows from conceptual hypothesis down, not from sensory information upwards; the self-model and its disintegration (ego death); we talk about schizophrenia and hearing voices; and about how every experience is “real” but not all experience is accurately mapped to our environment.

30 Jun 2023Swimming In The Sacred: Wisdom From The Psychedelic Underground | Rachel Harris02:00:32

Rachel Harris, PhD joins us to talk about her new book, Swimming In The Sacred

Swimming in the Sacred offers a revelatory look into the past half-century of psychedelics use via in-depth interviews Harris conducted with women elders who have worked underground guiding sacred entheogenic journeys to cultivate insight, healing, and spiritual development.

Specifically, we talk about working with unseen worlds and unseen others; thin veils, absorption, and being accidentally overdosed by psychedelics; the uncanny connection between guide and journeyer during ceremony; and how psychedelic guiding work is NOT therapy and how therapy and guiding are two different skill sets.

Furthermore, we talk about the complexity of good dosing; the value of lower doses and the risks of putting larger doses on a pedestal; the strange emerging phenomenon of “competitive ego deathing”; and learning to work with life in a bigger way by learning to let our psychedelic insights work on us over time.

We talk about the risks of harm and abuse in both under- and above-ground psychedelic therapy; the difference between certification and qualification; how we lose our capacity to properly skill psychedelic guides in our rush to certify as many as possible to meet a massive demand; how to assess if a provider is trustworthy and skilled; and why psychedelic therapists NEED to experience psychedelics themselves.

He is also founder of ICEERS Academy, and creator AyaSafety, an online course for people interested in increasing the safety of ayahuasca ceremonies.

Our interview with Jerónimo is going to explore the vulnerability of increased suggestibility while the influence of ayahuasca (and other psychedelics), and the various harms that can can incur when one's facilitator that suggestibility is not handled with skilful care.

Throughout the interview we cover a range of different ways that facilitators can accidentally harm their clients through suggestibility; the relationship between openness and vulnerability; how "caring" and "lack of care" can exist simultaneously; how the isolation and clandestine nature the modern psychedelic underground makes cultural learning difficult; how a facilitator can learn what is harmful, with respect to suggestibility; and how participants can protect themselves from a lack of facilitator care—all with many anecdotes and examples sewn throughout the course of the conversation.

19 Jul 2019Spirit Entities, Disease, and Demons | Are Thoresen ~ ATTMind 10201:48:55

This episode seeks to explore the phenomenon of spiritual forces, demons, and disease. But not so much from the "are spirits real?" perspective but from the position of assuming they are real and thus an exploration of what are they and how they operate on the human being.

For this exploration, we welcome Are Thoresen, a veterinarian, acupuncturist, and scholar of anthroposophy. Are is also recognized as an expert in spirit entities and demonic possession, with a particular focus on their role in illness and healing.

(...FULL EPISODE BREAKDOWN BELOW...)

Of course, the ongoing skepticism of the "realness" of all this is present throughout this discussion as I, your host and interviewer, am not sold on the whole thing. At least not in the beginning, my heavy skepticism waning towards responsible ambivalence by the end of it all.

*** That said, I invite people to please keep their higher reasoning intact fo this interview as, real or not, getting obsessed with the presences of "demonic forces" and "battles between good an evil" can take us down dangerous roads psychologically. ***

09 Jun 2017The Psychedelic Origins of Life w/ Bruce Damer (part 1) ~ Ep. 4901:13:25

Episode Part 1/2

From the origins of life, through ancient human history, to the interplanetary future of humanity and everything in between.

"Bruce Frederick Damer, Ph.D. (born 31 January 1962) is a Canadian-American multidisciplinary scientist, designer, and author. Dr. Bruce Damer collaborates with colleagues developing and testing a new model for the origin of life on Earth and in the design of spacecraft architectures to provide a viable path for expansion of human civilization beyond the Earth."

This man's resume is extensive and beautiful. From helping to lay the foundations for multi-user digital interfaces in the early 90s, to designing spaceships for NASA, to bringing forth what is "perhaps the first "end-to-end" model proposed for life's origins." Not only that but he is also a strong, public supporter of the counter-cultural movement. Once personal friends, with Terence McKenna, Bruce is an incredible story teller and has come on the show for this special 2 part episode to share the story of the origins of life on planet earth, from start dust through the primordial soup and first homo sapiens all the way to dropping LSD at transformational music festivals.

24 Nov 2017Intimacy, Iboga, and Heroin Addiction w/ E. Bast & Chor Boogie ~ Ep. 6001:19:26

Many people struggle with addiction their whole lives. Their story one of (hu)man vs. addiction, their story often ending with addiction the victor.

But what if that is not the way the story needs to be written? What if there is a way out that helps us suffering to reach into the root of our pain and find our love for life again?

The guests for this episode of the podcast, Elizabeth Bast and Chor Boogie, believe true freedom from addiction is possible with an ancient African root bark called Iboga.

They believe this not only because of the growing scientific research and the countless anecdotes about iboga's potential available on the internet but because it is also their lived experience.

Elizebeth and Chor join us on the show to talk about heroin addiction, how it impacted their intimate relationship, the redemption they found in Iboga, and what iboga taught them about what it takes to heal the pain at the root of addiction in oneself and the hearts of those we love.

10 May 2017Bop Apocalypse: Jazz, Race, The Beats & Drugs w/ Martin Torgoff ~ Ep.4701:38:15

If you had to point to any singular example of institutionalized racial prejudice in America, the so-called drug war is a shining example. The prohibition of drugs in the United States, and subsequently much of the Western world, has its origins in racism, classism, and xenophobia (as well as the socio-economic control of industry, but that's a different story for a different time). The war on drugs was a classist and racist war on people of color (the origin of the Marijuana Tax Act in 1937) and those representing a threat the governmental powers that be, such as hippies and anti-war activists (Nixon's launch of the war on drugs in 1971).

If we are to move forward into the better world, one that heals the wounds rotting at the core of the rise of Trump, and begin to understand the systemic foundations of racism in the United States, we need to understand the history. This episode, with Martin Torgoff, author of Bop Apocalypse: Jazz, Race, The Beats, and Drugs, offers a piece of that history. In particular, it follows the history of drug prohibition and institutionalized racism along the coupled history of Jazz music from the early 20s, told through the stories of the musicians, political leaders, and poets whose lives are inseparable from that history.

09 Jun 2017The Psychedelic Origins of Life w/ Bruce Damer (part 2) ~ Ep. 4901:06:01

Episode Part 2/2

06 Jul 2018LSD and The New Science Of Brainwave Harmonics | Selen Atasoy, PhD ~ ATTMind 7601:26:52

Selen Atasoy PhD and her team have developed a new model for interpreting fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) data based on the mathematics of harmonic waves a phenomenon ubiquitous in nature. Essentially, they have developed a way to 'decompose' brain states in the same vein as how we can decompose a musical piece down to its individual notes. They call is connectome-harmonic decomposition and have applied this approach to the fMRI data of the brain on LSD.

01 Jun 2024Treating Traumatic Brain Injury with Ibogaine | Dr. Nolan Williams ~ ATTMind 18801:46:53

Nolan Williams, MD joins to talk about brain injury, ibogaine, and the incredible results of his study (conducted at Ambio Life Sciences Center) on ibogaine for treatment of traumatic brain injury, "concussions" in particular.

We also talk about ibogaine as an oneirogen; the cardiac risks of ibogaine; how ibogaine compares to other treatments methods for brain injury, including other psychedelics; microdosing ibogaine for traumatic brain injury; and that ibogaine can seemingly “de-age” the brain.

Additionally, we talk about context vs pharmacology in the healing benefits of psychedelics; separating high-technology from time; and how and why using the vehicle of capitalism to fund psychedelic research may be a good thing. Enjoy

11 Apr 2017Dying To Know: The Story Of Tim Leary and Ram Dass w/ Gay Dillingham ~ Ep.4501:17:13

We welcome Gay Dillingham to the April full moon edition of ATTMind Radio. Gay is an award-winning filmmaker and the director of Dying To Know: Timothy Leary and Ram Das.

We have her on the show to talk about Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert (no known as Baba Ram Dass), who they were on the surface of history but also who they were as people, friends, and members of a larger community.

For full show notes, head to http://bit.ly/ATTMindRadioEp45

We also talk about the process of making this film and why she felt telling the story of these two men was so important that she was willing to invest 19 years of her life into making it. (Also, how it was she got Robert Redford to narrate this film about counter-cultural heroes!)

Personally, watching this film was perspective altering for me, which I talk about in the episode. Having been exposed to an intimate revealing of people whom I had only known as the legends that had come before me, was deeply meaningful.

If you do, or don't know who these men are it's still a worthy listen, as, like Gay proclaims in the film, "whether you know them or not, chances are they changed your life".

15 Jul 2022Why Our Sense of Connection Matters | Psychedelic Café 901:58:18

WHY DOES OUR SENSE OF CONNECTION MATTER?

This is the central question that guides the conversation you will hear today, another session in our Psychedelic Café series, where we featured a curated selection of guests to explore how "whether or not we feel connected affects everything".

We also explore the neurobiological origins of our sense of connection/disconnection with each other and how that is wrapped up in personal and collective traumas; our sense of connection with nature and the consequences that our lack of it is having on our lives and all life on this planet; as well as strategies and pathways of increasing our sense of connection with ourselves, each other, and the natural world.

We also talk about connecting with spiritual energies and our dead loved ones; ancestry in general; the importance of being able to grieve together; and the value of learning to turn towards pain.

Our Guests for this Café are: Darcia Narvaez, Robert Gilman, Rita Bozi, Charley Wininger, Jean Robertson, Sky Otter, and Sam Gandy

Enjoy.

23 Jun 2017The Metaphysics Of Consciousness w/ Bernardo Kastrupt ~ Ep 5001:08:15

What is Consciousness? Is it unique to human cognition or is it universal and permeating all things? Is it an epiphenomenon of brain activity or a universal constant? Do all things 'have' consciousness or are they 'of', 'in', or 'by' consciousness? Who and what are we, humankind, in the grander process of Consciousness itself? What is the nature of this whole "Reality" game?

For the 50th episode of Adventures Through The Mind podcast, we welcome philosopher Bernardo Kastrup onto the show to address these questions and more.

06 Sep 2024Empowering Our Joy For Life Through Honoring Our Pain for the World | John Seed ~ ATTMind 19101:36:26

In this episode of the podcast, we interview deep ecology teacher and rainforest activist John Seed.

Together, we discuss the importance of altering our sense of self such that it includes the natural world, the role psychedelics can play in that process, and how, even if the world as we know it burns and collapses, life itself will thrive through it all as it always has.

We also talk about the philosophy of deep ecology and healing ourselves from the illusion of anthropocentrism; falling into the apathy of the modern world; “honouring our pain for the world” and how, when expressed, despair becomes empowerment. As well as the dance between present ecological crisis and the thriving of life for billions of years; the Disney-fication of nature vs the brutality of life being itself; and where psychedelics fit into deep ecology and environmental activism.

Far from being a downer episode, as one might expect with topics such as these, I found my conversation with John refreshing, empowering, and genuinely inspiring. To me, this is one of the small handful of interviews I have done that impacted me in a significantly positive way. I hope you experience something similar.

Enjoy.

This episode features an interview with Jeffery Lando, an experienced filmmaker who recently directed the psychedelic-themed movie "Lissa's Trip".

Our discussion explores the intersection of psychedelics, artificial intelligence, and filmmaking. We discuss into how Lando used AI and other emerging technologies to create the visual effects for his film, producing some of the best LSD-like psychedelic visuals and audio that I have personally seen in a movie. We also discuss the potential impacts of AI on the film industry and creative processes more broadly.

We explore ideas around personal growth, societal change, and envisioning post-scarcity futures as Lando shares his perspectives on the transformative potential of psychedelics, drawing from his own experiences and how they influenced the themes in his movie.

Additionally, the conversation touches on some, let’s say, provocative topics related to economics, labour, and visions for reorganizing society. And, although I can't endorse any particular views, I believe you'll find it to be a thought-provoking dialogue about technology, consciousness, and human potential.

Enjoy!

29 Sep 2017The Science Of DMT w/ Christopher Timmermann ~ Ep. 5600:59:32

Christopher Timmermann is the cognitive neuroscientist leading a project at Imperial College London focusing on the effects of DMT in the brain and human consciousness. He is interested in the use of methods bridging the relationship between the phenomenology evoked by the psychedelic experience and changes in brain activity using diverse neuroimaging tools.

We have him on the show to ask him some nerdy questions about his research on DMT, psychedelic research in general, and the relationship between neural activity and Altered Consciousness.

02 Mar 2018We Don't Know Sh!t | Dennis McKenna ~ ATTMind 6702:01:58

Dennis Jon McKenna is an American ethnopharmacologist, research pharmacognosist, lecturer and author. He is the brother of well-known psychedelics proponent Terence McKenna and is founding board member and the director of ethnopharmacology at the Heffter Research Institute, a non-profit organization concerned with the investigation of the potential therapeutic uses of psychedelic medicines.

He is also one of the founding contributors to the modern wave of ayahuasca research in particular and psychedelic research in general. In fact, the book Magic Mushrooms grower’s guide, which he co-authored with his brother Terence in the 70s, presented the first reliable method for cultivating psilocybin mushrooms at home.

Chances are if it wasn’t for Dennis and his brother, none of us would have ever tasted the magic at all.
