30 Jun 2022 | Ep. 843: Business Owner, Ultrarunner, and Full-Time RVing With Family of 5 - Revisited - Caleb Simpson | 00:43:43
Originally aired on February 01, 2019 When Caleb sold his previous business, Bearded Brothers, his wife, Kristy, had the crazy idea of being debt-free and living in an RV full-time. Everyone around them thought they were nuts! Nearly 4 years into their journey, a lot of the people who called them crazy are now jealous of their freedom, lack of “stuff”, and ability to go where the wind takes them. Caleb and Kristy are both small business owners who are able to operate their businesses out of the compact dwelling space. They have no end to their adventure in sight but admit that RV living with three kids and running businesses absolutely has its unique challenges, but it’s a tradeoff compared with a normal route in life. Caleb is also an avid ultrarunner, taking the home and family to races all over the country. Instead of having to go to a stale hotel room after a long race, he can walk right into his house. 17 Nov 2022 | Ep. 881: How Adventure Helps Us Start Over - Revisited - Sara Schulting-Kranz | 00:48:58
Originally aired - February 22, 2019 Seven years ago, Schulting-Kranz was living her life very much within the box. She hosted parties, watched her kids play sports, paddle boarded on the gorgeous coast of California near her home when one day her husband of 17 years admits he's been unfaithful to her for the last 14 years and came out as gay. Her life deteriorated in front of her eyes as she realized everything had to change. Not only was the news devastating, but it also rehashed old memories of being raped at 17 years old, which led to her first son. Sara didn't wallow in her sorrow but took the opportunity to pursue her dream to live a life connected to the outdoors and to show the healing power of nature to as many people as she possibly could. Thus, Live Boldly Coaching was born and her story of pain has become one of strength and compassion with all sorts of adventures, like earning a Guinness World Record for leading her friend Shawn Cheshire to record the fastest rim-to-rim-to-rim run across the Grand Canyon by a blind person. No matter where she goes, she can now be found on mountaintops all around the country wearing a glamorous pair of bright red high heel shoes. Get out there and live boldly. 21 Jan 2021 | Ep. 698: The Rise of Backcountry Skiing - Andrew Drummond | 00:41:53
The mountains of New Hampshire have brought many exciting experiences to Andrew Drummond. Growing up in the area Andrew has been training his whole life, without knowing it, to be a defining source of knowledge, gear, and stoke for backcountry skiing in the Northeast. After stints skiing and surfing out west, even going up to Alaska to alpine tour, Andrew was ready to come home and spread the stoke in his own backyard. After refamiliarizing himself with the White Mountains that he still calls home, the constant questioning from like-minded folks wanting to know the best places to go just off the beaten path, as well as folks wanting to dip their toes in this new backcountry craze, led Andrew down a path he never thought he’d lead...retail. Having opened his shop, Ski the Whites, to help satiate the area’s needs, the growth of community and adventure has only risen as well. Now outfitting folks for skiing, biking, and runnings, the shop has even begun dabbling in coffee to further meet folks where they are with what they with the focus always being on a solid community. On top of owning and operating an outfitting company, Andrew serves on the board of the Granite Backcountry Alliance and he joins today to tell us about his journey and impact on and off the mountain. Enjoy. Find out more about Andrew: Instagram: @sr_drummond Business: @ski_the_whites Learn more about Athletic Brewing’s Two For The Trails program here. 13 Jul 2020 | Ep. 652: The Longest Canoe Trip Ever Done - Dana Starkell | 01:02:27
When 10-year-old Dana bought a book about Tarzan rather than a candy bar with his first $1 allowance, he had no idea just how fateful that decision would be. After being inspired by the book he told his dad, Don, that he wanted to walk to the Amazon River. Don, being the imaginative adventurer that he was, took his son's request seriously and began planning what would become the world's longest-ever canoe trip. It would take 10 years before Don, Dana, and his brother, Jeff, would set out on their 12,000 mile, 2-year-long journey to the mouth of the Amazon River. Jeff eventually dropped out of the adventurere, but Don and Dana made it to the end, earning their induction into the Guinness Book of World Records for having completed the longest canoe journey ever, a distance of 12,181 miles (19,603 kilometres). 11 Jan 2021 | Ep. 695: Walking Across Australia With Five Wild Camels - Sophie Matterson | 01:03:11
After needing a break from her career in film and TV, Sophie took a very fortuitous turn in her life by finding the most random job she could, milking camels. If you didn’t realize camels could be milked, neither did I. To make a long story short, Sophie fell in love with camels and never went back to her old career. Her ongoing 5-year passion for camels has taken her to places like The Flinders Ranges, Lake Eyre and The Tirari Desert, Uluru, Michigan USA, Texas, and Rajasthan India. At some point in the pursuit to learn more about these amazing creatures, Sophie got the idea to cross Australia on foot while being accompanied by 5 wild (or “feral”) camels. This would not only entail catching and taming 5 out of upwards of a million wild camels that roam Australia but also walking thousands of kilometers across the vast and void Australian Outback. Keep in mind, Australia is the geographic size of the US with 1/10th of the population. A wild idea indeed! Today Sophie joins us from just over the halfway point of the journey in the bizarre little town of Coober Pedy. Jude, Delilah, Charlie, Clayton, and Mac will all continue the journey in March. 08 Feb 2019 | Ep. 478: Connecting Veterans with the Outdoors and Each Other - Todd Crevier | 00:52:40
When Todd got back from deployment, he had a mound of issues to work through. Divorce, drug addiction, and chronic pain all led to him really struggling with the transition to civilian life. Not to mention, not having many folks around him that understood what war was like. A family vacation to Yellowstone National Park changed everything. Todd felt the wilderness had given him the confidence to act on his dream of connecting veterans and their families with each other by connecting them with the outdoors. 29 Jun 2020 | Ep. 648: The Disappearance of Christine Boskoff - Johanna Garton | 00:49:37
Although Johanna and Christine grew up in the same town of Appleton, Wisconsin, their paths would never cross. That is, until one day Christine was featured in a local newspaper for disappearing on a remote mountain in western China. Johanna’s mother picked up the story and became somewhat consumed with Christine’s background and how this bright young woman from Appleton ended up on the world’s highest mountain. When her mother was no longer able to work on the book due to the progression of Parkinson’s Disease, Johanna decided to pick up the story and turn it into Edge of the Map: The Mountain Life of Christine Boskoff. In today’s episode, we’ll talk with Johanna about her life and what led her to pursue this story and what it was like for a non-climber to delve so deep into that world. You can find Edge of the Map at her website, JohannaGarton.com, or anywhere else you get books. Johanna and I ask that you consider supporting your local bookstore. 31 May 2021 | Ep. 735: The Disappearance of Snowboarder Marco Siffredi on Everest - Jeremy Evans | 01:01:25
From Rowman.com: “Marco Siffredi was the first person to make a complete snowboard descent of Mount Everest in 2001, and was regarded by many as the world’s best snowboarder. But the following year in 2002, Marco mysteriously disappeared on Everest while attempting a more difficult route known as Hornbein Couloir, an unrelentingly steep, difficult to access route with a high failure rate. Using exclusive never-before-granted interviews with family and friends, Evans aims to solve Everest's greatest mystery in nearly a century while exploring Marco's pursuit of a dream, his love of freedom and adventure, and how his French family was forever altered by his loss.” Jeremy Evans is a climber, snowboarder, award-winning journalist, and the author of The Battle for Paradise and In Search of Powder. Through his writing and adventures, he has connected with the most influential people in the climbing and skiing/snowboarding industries and encouraged them to tell their stories. This was most evident with subjects in the outdoor adventure field where Jeremy has been able to connect with climbers, skiers, and snowboarders worldwide.
