25 Sep 202431. Executive Function Challenges in ADHD: Strategies for Success with Claire Britton00:44:31

In this episode, I’m joined by Claire Britton, an ADHDer, mum of two, and paediatric Occupational Therapist. Together, we dive into the often confusing and frustrating world of executive function. You know the feeling - struggling to keep it all together, constantly questioning why everything feels so hard. We’re breaking down what executive function really is, why ADHD mums feel like they’re always on the back foot, and how we can start managing the daily chaos with more compassion and less overwhelm.

Key Takeaways:

  • Claire’s “Admin Team” Analogy: Claire describes executive function as your brain’s “admin team,” and for ADHD mums, that team is often understaffed and struggling to keep up. It’s not failure - your brain is simply overworked and needs help.
  • The Real Mental Load of Motherhood: ADHD mums carry an unseen, exhausting weight that goes far beyond school lunches and appointments. If you’ve ever ended your day feeling burnt out and wondering why you can’t do it all, this is for you - you’re not lazy, just carrying more than most can imagine.
  • Practical Strategies for Mums Who’ve Tried Everything: Claire shares real tips like body doubling, habit stacking, and visual schedules - simple yet powerful survival tools for ADHD brains trying to stay on track.
  • Medication, Self-Compassion, and Letting Go of Guilt: From Claire's personal perspective, she shares how medication can create mental breathing room, allowing you to manage more effectively, while self-compassion is key to releasing the guilt that so many ADHD mums carry.

Why This Episode is a Must-Listen:

This episode is a lifeline for mums feeling overwhelmed and like they're not measuring up, offering practical tools, a deeper understanding of your ADHD brain, and most importantly, the reminder that you are not alone in this journey.

25 Nov 202444. Supporting Neurodivergent Kids with Friendships and Boundaries with Bec Sparrow00:47:40

Friendships can be tricky, especially when navigating neurodivergence. As parents, we often wonder how to help our kids make meaningful connections, set healthy boundaries, and deal with social challenges.

That’s why I brought in the one and only Bec Sparrow A.K.A. Australia’s Friendship Whisperer. With two decades of experience as a writer, speaker, and advocate for connection, Bec has helped countless parents, teens, and schools understand what it takes to create meaningful, lasting friendships. Her passion for belonging shines through in this episode, where she shares insights drawn from both her professional expertise and her lived experiences.

We explore:

  • Friendship as a skill: Why friendships aren’t instinctive for everyone and how to teach kids (and yourself) to build meaningful connections step by step.
  • Setting boundaries with confidence: Practical tips for helping kids say no and communicate their needs without guilt.
  • Spotting red flags in friendships: Bec uses Dr Brené Brown’s BRAVING framework to break down the key elements of trust and healthy relationships.
  • Handling conflict with kindness: How to navigate disagreements without creating unnecessary drama.
  • Expanding social circles: Why building friendships outside of school is essential for resilience and avoiding negative peer pressure.

30 Sep 202432. Realising Autistic Burnout: A Personal Story for Neurodivergent Mums [Solo Episode] with Jane McFadden00:24:48

In this first part of my two-part series on autistic burnout, I’m sharing how I came to realise the impact of burnout on my life – something that had been affecting me for years without my knowing.

From reflecting on childhood conditioning to understanding how societal pressures pushed me into burnout, I unpack the key moments that shaped my experience. I also share why this realisation was life-changing for me and why I’m passionate about helping other neurodivergent women and girls avoid the same struggles.

I talk about:

  • How the realisation of autistic burnout changed my life
  • Reflections on growing up in a world where “doing your best” meant pushing through exhaustion for external praise and validation
  • How societal expectations shaped my default settings of people-pleasing and pushing myself beyond my limits
  • Why I believe so many women feel the same way and how I hope sharing my experience validates yours too

This episode is for anyone who feels like they’ve been running on empty, not realising the toll it’s taking. It’s about recognising the early signs and validating your experience, so you can stop the burnout cycle before it starts.

Jane and Shantelle explore the popularity of Shantelle’s previous episodes, touching on topics like self-hatred, ADHD, and relationships. The engaging banter between Jane and Shantelle sets the tone for a candid and relatable conversation about the challenges and triumphs of being an ADHD mom.

16 Oct 2024MINI SERIES (Episode 2): Coercive Control and Lived Experience00:51:25

TRIGGER WARNING: This podcast series discusses topics that may be distressing to some listeners, including domestic violence, physical and sexual abuse, and emotional trauma. It includes real-life accounts from survivors that may be distressing. If you or someone you know is affected by these issues, please prioritise your well-being and consider listening to a different episode or proceed with caution. If you feel overwhelmed at any point, it's okay to take a break or seek support.

In this Mini Series, we dive into the complexities of domestic violence, touching on how these often hidden forms of harm affect countless lives. While it’s impossible to cover everything, our goal is simple: to shed light on these critical issues, help those who may see themselves in these situations, and point toward where support is available.

Let’s be real: we can’t change or cover everything in one podcast series. But what we can do is start the conversation. If this episode helps even one person recognise the signs of abuse or points them toward safety, it’s worth it. It’s not about perfection, it’s about offering hope and shedding light on what’s often kept in the dark.

16 Jan 202451. Addiction and ADHD (Food and Alcohol) with Fiona McIntyre00:57:29

On this episode of The ADHD Mums Podcast, Jane introduces Fiona McIntyre from Face Your Flaws Coaching, an expert on addiction and ADHD. Fiona, a life coach with over 20 years of experience, was diagnosed with ADHD at 47 and has successfully overcome addiction challenges. She shares her personal journey of losing 35 kilos and embarking on a sober lifestyle after 30 years of binge drinking. Fiona, a mother of two neurodivergent children, emphasises that a diagnosis is not an identity and is passionate about helping others facing alcohol, weight loss, and ADHD management challenges.

Jane and Fiona delve into the complexities of addiction, specifically focusing on food and alcohol, which they believe are prevalent challenges for ADHD mums. Fiona discusses her struggles with binge eating and binge drinking, highlighting the connection between ADHD, dopamine deficiency, and the pursuit of substances that provide a dopamine hit. Fiona emphasises the importance of addressing emotional issues, trauma, and self-esteem concerns that often underlie addictive behaviours.

Fiona speaks about her ADHD diagnosis journey, her experience with medication, and the role of self-beliefs in triggering addictive responses. Fiona advocates for narrative therapy to challenge and reframe the stories individuals tell themselves about their addiction. They explore alternatives to traditional support groups like AA, suggesting individualised approaches such as alcohol coaching, online communities, and personalised strategies tailored to each person's unique situation.

Fiona shares her motivational mantra, "I love myself enough to stay sober," and stresses the significance of understanding and challenging the narratives one creates around addiction. She concludes by encouraging individuals to seek support, embrace their personal strengths, and recognise that lapses are a normal part of the recovery process.

*Be aware I mention suicidal thoughts briefly in this episode*

In this solo episode of ADHD Mums, I share my personal journey of how ADHD medication led to the unexpected discovery that I was Autistic. 24 Feb 202566. Perimenopause, ADHD & What Doctors Don’t Tell You: Haylee’s Story00:28:42

If your ADHD traits feel like they’ve gotten worse - with more anxiety, brain fog, rage, and exhaustion - you might be dealing with something no one warned you about: perimenopause.

For late-diagnosed ADHD mum Haylee, hitting 40 brought a wave of unexpected struggles that left her questioning everything. Doctors dismissed her. Anxiety came out of nowhere. Her executive function took a nosedive. And the rage? Next level. It wasn’t until she became her own advocate that she found answers.

In this episode:

  • Why ADHD mums experience perimenopause more intensely
  • The warning signs doctors miss (or dismiss)
  • How hormone shifts impact ADHD traits like executive function & mood regulation
  • Why brain fog, intrusive thoughts & anxiety can hit harder in your late 30s+
  • The truth about hormone therapy & how to advocate for yourself

Why this matters:

Perimenopause isn’t just “the lead-up to menopause” - it can massively impact your brain, emotions, and daily life, especially if you’re ADHD or autistic. Yet, most doctors aren’t trained to recognise it early. This episode arms you with the knowledge and tools to push back, get the right support, and stop feeling like you’re losing yourself.

06 Nov 202341. High Camouflaging ADHD and ASD with Millie Carr01:16:03

Jane interviews Millie (one of her favourite guests) on masking and highly camoflaging ADHD and ASD in females. Millie is a teacher based in Melbourne, she has ADHD and has neurodiverse children herself.

Highlights

- Can labelling be positive, why is there the hesitation?

- Should we talk to our kids about their ADHD?

- The trend towards successful celebrities or sports people being labelled neurodiverse.

- The correlation between success and neurodiversity.

- What is the personal cost of perfectionist behaviour and ADHD.

- Highly perfectionist children (or typically girls) who are conscientious are hard to identify.

- Physical 'symptoms' of being unwell for girls are often presented as anxiety such as stomach aches.

- Children's perception vs reality negative view on their lives

- Girls presenting with social issues can be an indicator

- Where can you find people who understand how ADHD presents in females? What can we do to improve that?

- Jane goes out of scope as per usual and speculates on prescribing rights and the Australian medical system which she has no business speculating on.

*Jane and Millie are not medical experts and you should always seek your own advice*

23 Sep 202430. Could it be PDA? Exploring the signs and why it’s different from ODD with Prof Tony Attwood and Dr Michelle Garnett00:26:23

In this episode, I’m joined by internationally recognised experts in autism, Professor Tony Atwood and Dr. Michelle Garnett, to explore the often misunderstood condition known as Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA). Together, we dive into what PDA really is, how it differs from Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), and what it means for neurodivergent children and their families.

Key Takeaways:

  • Understanding PDA vs ODD: Discover the critical differences between PDA and ODD. Tony and Michelle explain how PDA is rooted in anxiety and a need for control, rather than oppositional behavior. If your child’s refusal feels irrational or emotionally charged, it could be PDA, not ODD.
  • Why Neurotypical Parenting Methods Don’t Work: Traditional approaches like rewards and punishments often fail when dealing with PDA. Learn why neurotypical parenting methods can damage relationships and what strategies work better for children with PDA.
  • Real-Life Examples You Can Relate To: From the anxiety behind refusing simple tasks like brushing teeth or getting dressed to avoiding even activities they love, Tony and Michelle share real-life examples that will resonate with any parent navigating these challenges.
  • Support That Works: We discuss the importance of creating a safe and flexible environment for your child, reducing their anxiety, and building a relationship based on understanding and cooperation.

This episode is a must-listen if you’ve ever struggled with a child who refuses simple tasks, even when they want to do them. Tony and Michelle’s insights will not only validate your experience but also offer hope and actionable strategies for managing PDA in a way that nurtures your relationship and reduces anxiety for your child.

16 Jul 202324. Relationships and ADHD with Shantelle Poynter01:18:31

Jane's back with one of her favourite guests Shantelle to discuss relationships and ADHD.

Shantelle is a neurodiverse Mother of two neurodiverse children who is a nurse in Brisbane.

Highlights include:

-       Knowledge is power – the awareness of diagnosis is so important for ourselves and our children.

-       Shame that we carry in our lives “Stop talking!” “You’re too loud or too much”

-       Why do we people please instead of asking for what we need in relationships.

-       Should we disclose to our children ‘labels’ – does it combat self hatred – is it better for kids to know, would we have preferred to know?

-       Do we people please because we are so grateful to have a friend?

-       Compliance at school = more responsibility at school. But can our girls handle it?

-       If you put extra curricular activites or opportuntiies in front ADHD females/girls we will DO IT but at our own expense.

-       Are ADHD females so far behind socially that we grow up late, how can we navigate friendship without learning the basics?

-       All the assumed knowledge of social situations that ADHD females are supposed to learn as teenagers but some of us come into marriage or mid 30s still having no idea of how to navigate social situations.

-       Boys get diagnosed more often and earlier so they have more chances to learn to regulate emotions than girls.

-       Do we get so emotional because we can’t regulate our emotions so we cry or yell instead of being assertive?

-       Thrill of new relationships, new jobs – starting again so often! Then we miss the chance to navigate conflict in friendships and partnerships.

-       How do we say no to unreasonable things?

This episode of ADHD Mums features a conversation with Bessie Campbell, a typical Aussie Mum ADHDer who shares her journey of being late-diagnosed with a combined presentation of ADHD, Autism and complex PTSD. Bessie, a mother and a professional in social services, discusses the challenges of managing ADHD inattentiveness, incorporating rigorous systems to stay organized, and the identity crisis following her diagnosis.

The conversation touches upon the intersectionality of autism, ADHD, and complex PTSD in Bessie's life, highlighting struggles with identity, motherhood, and the exhaustive effort required to maintain semblances of organization.

Additionally, they delve into the societal perceptions of Autism and ADHD, discussing the implications of labelling these conditions as disorders versus differences.

03 Jun 20245. What Every Mum Needs to Hear from Top Autism Expert with Prof Tony Attwood00:43:59

Biggest guest I've ever interviewed as I nervously welcome Professor Tony Atwood, a true pioneer in the field of Autism, for an intimate and revealing conversation about the complexities of understanding and diagnosing neurodiversity in children, with a particular emphasis on the often-overlooked experience by those who internalise rather than externalise (often experienced by girls and women).

Tony shares his unparalleled expertise on how professionals can become more attuned to the subtle signs of neurodiversity that may be masked or internalised, ensuring that no child slips through the cracks. We delve into the critical importance of thorough preparation and documentation in achieving a successful assessment, and explore potential groundbreaking changes to the DSM criteria that could revolutionise the way we diagnose and support neurodivergent individuals.

Don't miss this rare opportunity to gain invaluable insights from Tony's unique dual perspective as both a seasoned clinician and a compassionate parent. This promises to be a conversation that will leave you informed, empowered, and inspired to create a more inclusive and understanding world for all children.

I highly recommend all Dr Tony Attwood's courses - he runs Attwood and Garnett Events. Dr Michelle Garnett was unfortunately unwell the day of the interview and she is the second half of this incredible educational company.

21 Aug 2023Interview with Motherhood the Beautiful Nightmare01:01:52

Jane interviews Tamara and Shanelle from Motherhood a Beautiful Nightmare.

Highlights

- We discuss why women take on the mental load of housework, child care and all household duties even if they have ADHD?

- Should we stage a protest?

-Tamara wonders whether she should have just let her husband do her daughter's make up for the dance concert?

- Why do we prepare for armageddon if we are going away for the weekend and our husband is taking over?

- Shanelle talks Brene Brown and her speculation that the split will never be 50/50. Each partnership is different.

- Jane recounts how her and her hubby divided up the duties when she went back to work.

- How can we more often ask ourselves questions about why are we feeling frustrated or angry?

- No one talks about self care - that's like giving sip of water to a dehydrated person in the desert. Mum's need way more than a massage one time.

- Jane shares she has previously always felt like she 'fails at therapy' because she couldn't do any of the interventions.

- Tamara and Shanelle don't have ADHD but wonder if we can celebrate the similarities of us all being people and raise awareness of inclusion instead of seeing the differences.

26 Jun 202318. ADHD and the family dinner pressure. Chats with Shantelle Poynter (Part 2)00:30:12

I was supposed to be interviewing Shantelle but we became instant friends and went OFF TOPIC hardcore.

Part 2 in the Coffee chats with Shantelle- I'd go to Part 1 first.

Topics covered:

- Are ADHD Mum's the WORST at self care? and why is that?

- Who created all the expectations on families to have dinner with their kids every night as a family and how bloody hard is that to do.

- We can create a safe haven for our kids to come home to after experiencing a world unfriendly to neurodivergent people.

- If we had of known about our diagnosis earlier, would we have natured ourselves or squashed ourselves? are we just TOO MUCH?

- Is ADHD hyper focus a super power or is it like a were wolf where it only comes out when the stars align, moon is full, wind is blowing right. The rest of the time ADHD is an absolute pest.

- Is there any group of people that looks after themselves LESS than ADHD Mums?

12 Feb 202455. Building Resilience in a Neurodiverse Family with Lael Stone00:51:13

On this episode of The ADHD Mums Podcast, Jane welcomes Lael Stone, an educator, TEDx speaker, author, and parenting counsellor, to discuss raising emotionally intelligent children in neurodiverse families. Lael's extensive background in working with families for over 20 years, especially in the realm of birth education, postnatal trauma counselling, and parenting education, makes her a valuable resource for this topic.

Jane and Lael dive into a conversation about the challenges parents face in maintaining emotional intelligence in neurodiverse families. Lael emphasises the importance of self-compassion, acknowledging the difficulties of parenting in today's stressful environment, and the need to release judgment and self-criticism. The discussion touches on permissive parenting and the struggle parents face in setting boundaries, especially in neurodiverse families where emotional regulation can be challenging. Lael advocates for building a tolerance for handling children's big feelings and the significance of modelling healthy ways to express and move emotions.

Jane and Lael also explore the concept of self-care for parents, acknowledging the difficulty of finding time for oneself. Lael suggests embracing micro-moments of self-care throughout the day, involving children in these moments, and redefining self-care beyond traditional expectations. The conversation highlights the importance of creating supportive communities and breaking the myth of perfect parenting, aiming for a realistic and compassionate approach.

17 Feb 202564. The NDIS Cuts and the Urgent Need for Immediate Action with Nicole Rogerson of Autism Awareness Australia00:33:21

Thousands of families are being blindsided by the latest NDIS cuts, with children losing essential support before new systems are in place. Parents are being told their child has “achieved their goals” - only to be left scrambling for therapy they still desperately need. If you’re feeling frustrated, exhausted, or just plain angry, you’re not alone.

In this episode, Nicole Rogerson joins me for a straight-talking, no-nonsense conversation about what’s happening, why it matters, and what we can do right now to fight for our children’s support.

Nicole is the founding director of Autism Awareness Australia, a trusted, independent source of information for our community since 2007. For over 18 years, she’s cut through misinformation, fought for real change, and helped families like ours navigate a system that too often leaves us behind.

She is one of Australia’s leading spokespersons for autism awareness and understanding. She has appeared on 60 Minutes, The 7.30 Report, Today, A Current Affair, Australian Story, and The Australian Women’s Weekly, using every platform possible to make sure our voices are heard.

But above all, Nicole’s an autism mum. Her eldest son, Jack, is the reason she does this work - and why she’s so committed to making sure we have the information and support we need.

04 Feb 202561. Unhealthy Habits & ADHD: Why We Get Stuck & How to Shift00:26:16

We tell ourselves we won’t do it again - won’t reach for that glass of wine after the kids go to bed, won’t fall into an hours-long scroll hole, won’t spend another $300 on a hyperfocus obsession we’ll drop in a month. And yet… here we are.

Our ADHD brains crave dopamine, and sometimes that means turning to habits that feel good in the moment but leave us stuck in a cycle. This episode isn’t about willpower or self-blame - it’s about understanding why ADHD makes these habits so sticky and what we can do to shift them for good.

In This Episode, We Cover:

  • Why our ADHD brains chase instant gratification - and how to hack it
  • How emotional regulation struggles fuel habits like binge eating, impulse spending, and avoidance
  • The power of micro-delays, habit tracking, and reframing negative self-talk
  • Simple dopamine-boosting alternatives that actually work
  • How to make impulsive habits harder to access - so we don’t have to rely on willpower

23 Oct 2024MINI SERIES (Episode 3): Maternal Suicide and Lived Experience00:34:37

TRIGGER WARNING: This podcast series discusses topics that may be distressing to some listeners, including lived experience recordings of attempted suicide. If you or someone you know is affected by these issues, please prioritise your well-being and consider listening to a different episode or proceed with caution. If you feel overwhelmed at any point, it's okay to take a break or seek support.

We cover the harrowing reality of maternal suicide, which tragically accounts for up to 20% of maternal deaths in Australia. You’ll hear deeply personal stories from two women, who bravely share their experiences with postpartum depression and suicidal thoughts. These stories are not just for mothers but for anyone who supports or knows a mother who may be struggling in silence.

We explore:

  • The overwhelming pressures of motherhood, especially for neurodivergent women.
  • The silent struggles many mothers face, hidden behind smiles and societal expectations.
  • How hormonal shifts, financial stress, lack of sleep, and relationship changes contribute to maternal depression.
  • The importance of community, connection, and asking for help.
  • How reaching out or recognising warning signs can prevent tragic outcomes.

Let’s be real—we can’t change or cover everything in one podcast series. But what we can do is start the conversation. If this episode helps even one person recognise the signs of suicidal thoughts in a friend or encourages a mother to go and seek help then this has been worth it. It’s not about me perfectly covering all aspects of suicide, it’s about offering hope and shedding light on what’s often kept in the dark.

Drawing on her 20-year battle with anxiety and a subsequent four-year struggle with depression, Lou advocates for a deeper self-awareness to build confidence and authenticity. Highlights

- Millie talks about proactively setting up the classroom for neurodiverse learning from day one, let's not wait for something to happen,

let's get ahead of it.

- Can we cater to multiple diagnosis' with one approach ie. small changes in the classroom can make a big difference.

- Expectations on parents vs expectation on teachers.

- Home work expectations - can we all just do the bare minimum please?

- The changes to inclusion being implemented in Australia.

- Millie talks passionately about creating a culture of accepting all different students, how can we change the culture in schools?

- Teachers need time set aside for professional development for ADHD, ASD and neurodiversities. We can't expect them to just know.

- Jane calls for an overhaul of the education system (yet again).

- Millie discusses the teacher shortage and Jane discusses how it feels to be a parent where it feels the principal is always on the teacher's side.

- Jane loses her shit and gets on the high horse and regrets some of her wording about schooling system and the mental health crisis in our young

people.

- Primary vs secondary education and how inclusion works.

- Millie and Jane discuss how yelling at neurodiverse kids just doesn't work.

- Why have we moved forward with inclusion in the workforce but not in schools?

- Are we getting to a place now that we know the system isn't working but we don't know what to do differently?

- Millie gives advice on how she personally would pick a school for her child, what to look for, what to avoid.

- Millie and Jane discuss private vs public (controversial topics lol)

13 Nov 2024MINI SERIES (Episode 6): Child Protection, Family Court and Perpetrators00:35:05

In this episode, I speak with Elyse Nauta, who has supported DV families across both metro and regional areas, and is a mum to a neurodivergent daughter. Elyse shares her professional knowledge from working in child protection for over 15 years to talk about the tough, often hidden reality of life after leaving an abusive relationship:

  • Leaving Isn’t Always the End: Even after women find the courage to leave, some abusers still find ways to control from afar, especially through kids or by twisting legal systems in a tactic called systems abuse. Elyse helps us understand what that looks like in real life.
  • The Power of a Good Support System: From Elyse’s experience, having just one trusted friend or family member to lean on can make a world of difference. We talk about why support can be the key to helping women rebuild their confidence and sense of security.
  • Financial and Legal Hurdles: Family Court and co-parenting come with their own challenges, especially when the ex has more financial control. Elyse shares insights on why this can feel like an uphill battle for many women.
  • Raising Boys with Better Tools: We dive into why teaching boys healthier ways to handle emotions matters. Elyse believes that showing them what positive relationships look like can help create a safer future for everyone.

05 Jul 202321. The Australian school system & our sons. Interview with Tania Waring00:58:44

Jane is joined by Tania Waring, a lawyer and advocate/care coordinator mum of three neurodiverse boys. Tania is very experienced in advocacy for her children to get what they need at school. Tania has also completed her honours in Psychology and is passionate about inclusive education and improving outcomes for children in the schooling system. Jane and Tania share personal experiences and highlight the need for more understanding and support from educators, as well as emphasising the importance of normalising these experiences and finding hope through the stories of others who have faced similar challenges. Tania also provides us with an insight into her passion of creating change within the school system to create a more inclusive environment and reduce the impact that schools have on children’s self-esteem.

*This episode specialises more in the externalising presentation of ADHD/ASD - which is seen more in boys than girls, but can occur in both genders. Where these kids are seen as 'disruptive' or 'problems.' *

Episode Highlights:

Þ   Common challenges faced by families with children who have ADHD and autism

Þ   Pushing through the grief and adjustment required when realising that the school experience may be different from what was imagined

Þ   The lack of accommodations and understanding within the Australian school system

Þ   The detrimental effects of segregating children with learning differences and the perpetuation of negative attitudes towards differences

Þ   Highlighting the issue of gatekeeping and suspensions in schools, especially for children with ADHD and autism

Þ   The pressure and lack of resources on teachers, which can lead to reactive responses and neglecting certain students

Þ   A discussion around schools being focused on managing students rather than providing adequate support, and gathering evidence to justify suspensions and expulsions

Þ   Highlighting how change can occur when and where adults reflect on their actions and hold themselves accountable where appropriate within a child’s meltdown

26 Nov 2024MINI SERIES (Episode 8): Why don't women just leave?00:12:09

**This audio has been replaced with a solo key take away messaging from Jane due to issues with audio quality** - Please email admin@adhdmums.com.au if you would like a copy of the original audio - it is scratchy which for those with noise sensitivity was difficult to listen to**

Domestic Violence is one of those topics that’s so much more complicated than it seems from the outside. This week, I sat down with Elyse Nauta for a second time, and as always, she brought incredible insight. Elyse has 15 years of experience in child protection, working everywhere from metro areas to remote regions like the Kimberleys. We explored the big question: why don’t women just leave? Spoiler: it’s not as simple as it sounds.

Key topics covered:

  • The Complexity of Staying
  • The Subtle Grip of Coercive Control
  • The Cycle That Keeps Victims Hoping
  • Understanding Why Perpetrators Act
  • Barriers That Make Leaving So Hard
  • How We Can Help

Elyse paints a vivid picture of what life can look like for women caught in these situations. Her insights remind us that understanding the ‘why’ behind someone staying in an abusive relationship is key to offering real support.

TRIGGER WARNING: This podcast series discusses topics that may be distressing to some listeners, including child abuse, physical and sexual abuse, and emotional trauma. If you or someone you know is affected by these issues, please prioritise your well-being and consider listening to a different episode or proceed with caution. If you feel overwhelmed at any point, it's okay to take a break or seek support.

Coercive Control and Lived Experience Episode

Let’s be real - we can’t change or cover everything in one podcast series. But what we can do is start the conversation. If this episode helps even one person recognise the signs of abuse or points them toward safety, it’s worth it. It’s not about perfection, it’s about offering hope and shedding light on what’s often kept in the dark.

Support and Help Lines

If you or someone you know is in an abusive situation, reaching out to professionals can be life-changing. I don't want to create resources on a website with no 'quick exit' function. A quick exit function on domestic violence (DV) websites is designed to protect individuals who may be in immediate danger while seeking help or information online. Many victims of DV are closely monitored by their abusers, including their online activities. The quick exit button allows users to leave the website instantly and redirects them to a neutral site, like a search engine, with one click.

03 Feb 202560. Mummy Needs More Than Wine: The Truth About Coping and Connection00:30:43

We tell ourselves it’s just one glass - we deserve it after a long day. But somehow, that glass turns into the easiest way to switch off. And if we’re honest, we’re not sure it’s working anymore.

ADHD mums aren’t drinking just for fun - we’re drinking to cope with the mental load, the overstimulation, the relentless pressure to do it all. And while a glass of wine might feel like a quick fix, it could actually be making everything harder.

This isn’t about guilt or never drinking again. It’s about understanding what’s really going on - so we can make choices that actually help, not just temporarily numb the chaos.

In this episode:

  • Why ADHD mums are more likely to struggle with alcohol use
  • The dopamine trap - why that first drink feels amazing but leaves you worse off
  • Alcohol & anxiety - the connection no one talks about
  • The role of perfectionism & stress in why we drink
  • How to reset your brain (without feeling like you’re missing out)

If you’ve ever poured a drink and wondered, “Do I actually need this?” - this episode is for you.
