28 May 2024Boost Your Productivity: Mastering Focus and Action with ADHD Brain Strategies00:27:56

Welcome to the third episode in Entrepreneurs with ADHD series.  In this  solo episode, I address the all too common challenge of having trouble getting our brain to focus on the task at hand and initiate taking action on it.

The secret is understanding that there are really only four things that stimulate focus and action for the ADHD brain,  called drivers, and they are interest, challenge, novelty, and urgency.

Each of us responds to these drivers in unique ways, but with just a little effort, we can create an effective strategy for how to use each of them to create and sustain momentum in our business, on demand.

Here’s a sneak peek of what you’ll learn:

1. **Interest Driver**: Discover how to tap into activities that genuinely excite you and how this can jump-start your productivity.

2. **Challenge Driver**: Learn to set personal milestones that push your limits and keep you engaged.

3. **Novelty Driver**: Implement new and novel changes to keep your ADHD brain stimulated and avoid boredom.

4. **Urgency Driver**: Understand how to harness the power of deadlines and time constraints for last-minute productivity pushes.  I explain the downside of overutilizing this one and why you want to avoid it.

This episode is full of real-life examples from my coaching business, as well as practical tips on how to implement these strategies yourself.

Mic drop moment:

"It's a really bad idea to only use urgency to get things done. Like anything else that becomes habitual, it’s a lot less effective over time while still doing plenty of damage to our bodies, minds and brains, and probably to our business and our relationships as well."

10 Oct 2023Signs Your Small Business Needs a Refresh00:36:24

From changing their business models and marketing strategies to even considering starting over with a completely new venture, small business owners are feeling the need for change. But whether it’s a pivot, rebrand or a total do-over, are these changes even the right move?

I'll be exploring the motivations behind these decisions and discussing the importance of a more thorough evaluation before taking the leap. We'll also be addressing the unrealistic expectations that can often cloud our judgment and lead us astray.

Join me as we navigate the challenges of entrepreneurship and discover when and why it's time to make a change in our small business.

This episode will cover a range of topics, including recognizing signs for change, understanding pitfalls, exploring personal reasons for change, avoiding impulsive choices, considering alternatives, reflecting on past decisions, addressing mindset and skillset, overcoming burnout, adapting to external factors, letting go of what weighs you down, examples of business pivots, strategic business exits, questions to consider, seeking help, and finding fulfillment beyond business.

Mic Drop Moment:

"We may be looking to our business not only to create financial stability but to give us a sense of meaning, a sense of purpose, to be a warehouse for our creativity, a social life, to give us a sense of belonging, community, and family.

Your business should not be expected to do all those things for you and for you not to have to give it anything in return."

If you can’t stop thinking about a pivot, rebrand, reinvention or strategic exit of your business, this might be the right time to work together. My signature program, The Boss Up Breakthrough will help you right size your business.

We work together for 12 weeks to clarify what’s working, what isn’t and where you can create more sustainable systems, so you can get off the burnout bus and start loving your business again.  At this time,  I am only accepting 1:1 clients and the first step is to schedule a free 30-minute consultation right here: https://bit.ly/calendly-free-consultation

02 Jan 20245 Uncomfortable Truths I Needed to Relearn in 202300:35:44

From the pitfalls of overcommitting to the false allure of doing everything yourself, I’m sharing some valuable insights from the uncomfortable truths and painful realities I experienced this past year.

2023 was a rough year for many solopreneurs, who learned the hard way that it was anything but business as usual.  Potential clients were fewer, sales cycles were longer and the status quo just wasn’t cutting it.

It's hard to wear so many hats., but we can also go from insight to action faster than with any other business model.

Join me as I unpack the importance of strategic planning, discerning options from opportunities, recognizing that more is not always better, and focusing on spending more time in your zone of genius.

Learn from my experiences so you can start this year off focused, fired up, and flame retardant.

Here are 3 key takeaways from the episode:

✏️  Less is better: Trying to do everything ourselves isn't sustainable. Instead, embracing the idea that others can do certain tasks better and faster can be a game-changer for our businesses.

✏️ Discerning opportunities from options: Aligning opportunities with our values and goals was a wake-up call to carefully evaluate where we invest time and energy. Don't overestimate the value of options or let FOMO dictate decision-making.

✏️ The power of planning: It's not just about being strategic and sustainable, but about reducing the risk of burnout in our businesses and lives.

These uncomfortable truths pave the way for growth and transformation in the new year and point me in the direction of right-sizing, boundaries, and burnout-proofing my business.

14 Mar 2023Navigating the Expert vs Thought Leader Debate00:28:23

If you're looking to become a recognized expert or thought leader, this episode will show you how to maximize your credentials, expertise, and professional networks to get there. Unlock the secrets to establishing yourself as a thought leader by leveraging your connections.

"The term expert has really evolved in the last few years. It has gone from the definition of a person who has extensive knowledge and ability based on research, experience, education, occupation in a particular field to basically being somebody who knows a little bit more than the person they're trying to help."

Here’s what you will learn:

  • Understand the differences between experts, professionals, and thought leaders.
  • Learn about ethical and moral obligations as a professional.
  • Utilize online presence to build an expert business.
  • Leverage a professional network to become a thought leader.
  • Tap into professional goals to market yourself.

Resources mentioned in this episode:

Here are the key points I cover:

  • Identity crises faced by professionals who start a coaching or consulting business
  • How to know which path to take - expert or thought leader
  • When and why your credentials matter

Becoming a genuine expert takes time and dedication. Legitimate experts have accumulated a deep knowledge of their field over years of experience and research. A professional is generally defined as someone who is a member of a profession, who works in a specific professional capacity and is subjected to codes of conduct and stringent ethical and moral obligations, as well as government oversight and enforcement by a regulatory body.

On the other hand, a thought leader is someone whose expertise is demonstrated by consistently answering the biggest questions in the minds of their target audience on their particular topic and who is asked to speak at keynotes.

In the unregulated industry of coaching, it is important for professionals to include their background, expertise, and credentials in their marketing and promotion to maintain credibility, as this will indicate to potential clients that they are knowledgeable and experienced in their field.

26 Mar 2024Strategies for Managing Perimenopause & Burnout00:42:38

The number of women who are questioning whether they are experiencing burnout, perimenopause, undiagnosed ADHD, or even early-onset Alzheimers is at an all-time high.  A lot of us are struggling and don’t even know where to turn for answers because there is so much crossover between the symptoms of these conditions.  Each of them affects our body, mind, and brain, so sorting things out is far from simple.

One of the most challenging aspects is the skill gap that seems to exist. Gynecologists don’t have enough training in perimenopause,  business coaches don’t understand mental health and psychotherapists aren’t trained in business.  What are mid-life female solopreneurs supposed to do?

I invited my friend, midlife hormone specialist, Stephanie Shaw, host of the Hello Hot Flash Podcast to help us unpack the confusion, normalize the struggle, and create some genuine clarity about how to create better boundaries (the ultimate in self-care), advocate with our health care providers and set priorities that really move the needle for women in their 40s and 50s, especially those of us who are self-employed.

👉 Here are 3 key takeaways for every female entrepreneur: over 40

Emotional Regulation: The transformative power of journaling to understand emotional patterns and taking proactive steps to process negative emotions

Self Advocacy with Healthcare Professionals: How to differentiate burnout from perimenopause symptoms, the importance of asserting for appropriate medical tests, and the art of being strategic during healthcare conversations.

Redefining Self-Care: Stephanie and I unpack the societal pressures women face and how embracing a comprehensive self-care approach—including establishing boundaries and renegotiating relationships—is vital not just for personal well-being but for sustainable success.

Mic Drop Moment:

"Part of the work that I do is teaching women to advocate for themselves because if your gynecologist will not provide you with information on how to handle your medical condition, then you need to find another gynecologist."

06 Aug 2024Four Ways to Enhance Your Creativity00:35:27

Most people with ADHD traits are original thinkers and creative problem solvers, but don’t always know how to make the most of these abilities. My own search lead me to the work of psychologist JP Guilford who studied creativity in the 950s, and is based on the notion that all creativity is evidence of divergent thinking.

Spoiler alert: if you are neurodivergent, you are creative, even if you don’t think of yourself that way.  In this episode,  using Guilford’s model, I will break down the four different types of creativity (aka divergent thinking) and share simple, effective strategies for how to enhance yours, from brainstorming and mind mapping to perspective shifting and role-playing.

Troubled by your tendency to go off on tangents?   Have trouble making decisions because you can see the benefits of every option?  Feel self conscious about your impulsivity and intuition?  It’s all evidence of your divergent, creative thinking!

Don't forget to share this episode with a fellow creative and choose one new strategy to implement this week.

Guilford’s Model of Divergent Thinking (aka Creativity)

  • Fluency: generating a large number of ideas or solutions
  • Flexibility: generating ideas that are different from each other.
  • Originality: generating ideas that are novel or unique.
  • Elaboration: developing, refining, and elaborating on ideas.

We’ll not only cover tools and techniques to amplify your creativity in each of these four areas, but how to protect your creativity through strategic rest, structured downtime and how to avoid toxic productivity and revenge bedtime procrastination.

On this episode of The Driven Woman Entrepreneur Podcast, we dive deep into the value of membership models for business owners who have reached capacity with one-on-one work or want to scale and don’t want to run a group coaching program.

Our guest, Lisa Princic, shares her insights into the flexibility of membership programs, which she has been specializing in helping coaches and consultants launch and grow for several years. We also discuss the key pillars for a successful membership program, including mentorship, education, and community, and how to align these with your pricing and value offerings.

Lisa and I are both analytical and didn’t hold anything back in this discussion, including talking about potential pitfalls and considerations when choosing a membership model, as not all models work for every business or audience. They delve into specifics like who the membership model is suited for, pricing, and promotion, but first, they discuss the speaker's journeys in choosing a membership model for their business.  We even talk about why some popular membership programs ended up closing and why.

During our conversation, I share some of the misconceptions I had about the membership model and how learning from Lisa helped me to see the value in the different types of membership structures that can appeal to different people. Tune in for a thoughtful and informative discussion on how to create a membership program that aligns with your values and unique abilities, while delivering scalable value to your clients.

11 Apr 2023The Accidental Entrepreneur's Guide to Success00:33:03

Are you an accidental entrepreneur who's been told to simply 'leverage your corporate skills' to make it as an entrepreneur --but have come to realize it's really not the same game? In this episode, I'll share how to overcome the hardships faced by unintentional entrepreneurship, recognize the skills you mastered in your previous career that will help you succeed in your own business, and cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset along the way.

When faced with being laid off, unable to find a suitable position, or caught between income-producing and caregiving responsibilities, many women become what I call “accidental entrepreneurs” and must find the courage to embrace risk-taking and creativity to build a successful business in a world where male entrepreneurs still outnumber them three to one and genuine mentors can be hard to find.

What I have come to appreciate as a result of being self employed since 2010 and helping others achieve this goal since 2015, accidental entrepreneurs may need to learn a few things, but we do not come to the table empty handed. I believe that  accidental entrepreneurs are far more likely to be intentional and a lot less impulsive with our business decisions. We have a strong sense of responsibility, accountability, and a deep sense of regard for the impact of our decisions and actions on others.  This may slow us down a bit compared to entrepreneurs with a longer track record of risk taking, but it can definitely make the difference between success and failure.

The goals of this episode are to help you:

  • Navigate challenges faced by unexpected female entrepreneurs
  • Utilize your corporate talents effectively in an entrepreneurial setting.
  • Address and overcome hurdles specific to accidental entrepreneurs.
  •  Develop a strong entrepreneurial mentality and personal identity.
  • Trust your intuition and battle perfectionism for improved business outcomes.

If you stumbled into entrepreneurship and have managed to stay afloat but it’s not yet smooth sailing, maybe it’s time you experienced my signature coaching program for female solopreneurs, the Boss Up Breakthrough. The only way you can work with me right now is through my 1:1 coaching program., and the first step is to schedule a free 30-minute consultation right here: https://bit.ly/calendly-free-consultation

The Boss Up Breakthrough

My signature coaching program, the Boss Up Breakthrough provides entrepreneurs with the guidance and tools necessary to streamline their businesses, identify their unique strengths and goals, and focus on what truly matters for long-term success.

Clients often have many great ideas, leading them to pursue multiple goals and projects simultaneously. However, this approach can result in missed opportunities and unfinished business.

I advocate for a flexible structure, creating order from chaos without telling clients what I think they should do. Through the Boss Up Breakthrough, entrepreneurs learn to focus on their most profitable ideas while creating an organized, simplified, and profitable business model that highlights their unique value.

This approach prevents burnout and ensures that businesses can adapt in response to changes in the market or clientele needs, all while maintaining a sense of organization and direction.

One of the core elements of achieving success with the Boss Up Breakthrough is addressing and overcoming negative mindset issues. Limiting beliefs, perfectionism, and fear of criticism or rejection are common problems that entrepreneurs face and can significantly impact their ability to grow and excel.

Recognizing one's own biases, blind spots, and attachments is an essential step in evaluating and improving one's business. This requires entrepreneurs to view their operations objectively and see where they may be slowing themselves down or hindering progress.

13 Aug 2024Do Women with ADHD Attract Narcissistic Partners?00:35:49

Several years ago, Rhoberta Shaler, PhD, interviewed me on the topic of whether women with ADHD are at greater risk for entering into a relationship with a narcissist or toxic partner on her podcast “Save Your Sanity.”

I have not done any qualitative research on the subject, but based on my experience as a psychotherapist and a coach, I have seen plenty of evidence that it may be true.

I was contemplating recording a solo episode on the topic when I learned that Dr Shaler passed away unexpectedly in April 2024.

So, instead of recording something on my own, I decided to share the best parts of the original interview on her show in honor of her important work.

In this episode, Dr Shaler and I explore how women with ADHD,  who tend to be quite intuitive often miss the warning signs that the person they are involved is a narcissist.

We unpack everything from the addictive allure of unpredictable partners to the internalized shame that makes us more vulnerable to remain in unhealthy relationships.

Our dialog offers a fresh perspective on the dopamine deficiency that drives us, insights on how rejection sensitivity, impulsivity, and the hidden brilliance of ADHD play a part in partner selection.

If you have ever found yourself in a manipulative relationship, or questioned your self-worth, this conversation will provide the validation you need to seek out more information and healing.

Mic Drop Moment:

"I believe that women with ADHD can sense the abnormality in the hijackal’s behavior and the inconsistencies in how they behave, but we override our ability to trust our intuition because of our persistent self-doubt and all the negative messages that we have internalized."   Diann Wingert

12 Mar 2024Feeling Drained? How to Reignite Your Client Service Business00:23:19

In today’s competitive market, many small business owners, especially those engaged in professional services, are experiencing burnout. The overwhelm and exhaustion can stem from a multitude of reasons, including working with clients who don't meet expectations, struggling to maintain a healthy balance between work and personal life, and feeling that their businesses aren't reaching their full potential.

In this straight-shooting episode, I cover the high cost of energetic loops in professional services businesses, and provide strategic tips for managing 1 on 1 client work, so you can streamline and simplify your processes, reduce stress, and avoid leaving money on the table, all in one.

The reality of a sole proprietor business,  while it can be simple to start and easy to run, can present challenges in managing open loops due to the nature of client service work. These open loops encompass various stages of the client service journey, from consultations to onboarding, and from drafting and reviewal to concluding the engagement. The inability to address these open loops can lead to mental and emotional strain and negatively impact the overall success of the business.

Let’s break down what you will learn in this episode:

  • Understanding the impact of burnout in client service businesses
  • Identifying open loops in professional services
  • Strategies to close open loops and boost energy and productivity
  • The importance of fostering client satisfaction and feedback
  • Practical tips for entrepreneurs to prevent burnout and sustain business success

Mic Drop Moment 🎙️

“These energetic drains contribute to burnout in a serious way, but they also do some other damage. They make us worry about our competency. They cause us to create negative comparisons in our mind between us and our competitors, and they drive fear that we aren't doing enough."

09 Jul 2024Women, ADHD and Emotional Regulation00:52:52

When we think of ADHD, most of us think of impulsivity, distractibility and inattentiveness, but challenges with regulating our emotions, including overexcitability, irritability, reactivity, rejection sensitive dysphoria, anxiety and overwhelm are just as prevalent.

This is especially true for women with the hormonal changes that accompany their monthly cycles and during perimenopause.

I’m thrilled to welcome Kate Moryoussef, an ADHD wellbeing and EFT coach, back to the Driven Woman Entrepreneur Podcast.

We will be talking about ways we can help ground, support and empower ourselves to gain self compassion, self confidence and self control through EFT tapping, breathwork and mindfulness practices.

  • Self-compassion techniques for reducing self criticism
  • Simple daily exercises to keep your nervous system in check
  • Tips for making more confident and clear decisions

10 Jan 2023Uncovering the Bottleneck in Your Business with Amber de la Garza00:54:53

The story of how Amber de la Garza came to be a guest on this podcast is not the typical one.  It started over 3 years ago at Podcast Movement 2019.  I was a listener to her popular productivity podcast, Productivity Straight Talk, and recognized her at the conference.  Even though I did not have a podcast at the time, I approached her, introduced myself, and pitched her on the spot.

Amber has branded herself 'The Productivity Specialist", so you know she is intentional with her time.  She graciously accepted my pitch, on this condition: "Launch your podcast, get to 100 episodes, and then, I will be your guest."   Well, I've never been one to shy away from a challenge from someone I respect, so this interview, in episode #140, is the fulfillment of Amber's promise.  It's also a great lesson for those who need challenge and accountability to kick their motivation into gear.

Amber De La Garza is a sought-after speaker, trainer, writer, coach, and creator of The Leverage Lab, who helps entrepreneurs and small business owners learn to manage their time and build effective business systems.  She is the host of the Productivity Straight Talk podcast, wife, mom, dog mom, and calls Las Vegas home.

"The skill set of learning to invest your most precious resource, which is time, was incredibly valuable. The idea and identity of The Productivity Specialist was born."

In this episode, Amber shares how her past career and life-changing events led her to focus on helping small business owners with their productivity, which leads to the concept of being the bottleneck in one's business, why it can be difficult to recognize, and why it tends to be a recurring pattern.

You will learn the following:

1. What is the skill set of learning to invest your most precious resource, time?

2. What would happen if a business owner becomes the bottleneck in their business?

3. What life lessons can be gleaned from making difficult decisions about how to manage time and invest in team members?

If you are looking for a sustainable way to a healthier life with less emphasis on food, that is also good for your brain,  this episode is for you. I invited primal health and intermitted fasting coach, Marisa Moon to join me for this episode of the Self-Care Series and this interview is about so much more than wellness.

Marisa was one of my first guests on the podcast (check out episode # 36 - Intermittent Fasting for Energy & Mental Clarity).  She recently became the best-selling author of “Not So Fast” based on her ten years of experience teaching people how to adopt the intermittent fasting lifestyle using her framework, The RESET Method and I knew she had to be part of our Self-Care Series.

The RESET method is more than just a fasting protocol—it's a roadmap to a healthy, sustainable lifestyle, which is particularly well suited to those of us juggling the demands of entrepreneurship and ADHD.

What you’re going to hear:

  • Intermittent fasting strategies with the ADHD 🧠 in mind.
  • Strategies for deep work and productivity without boredom or burnout.

18 Apr 2023The Transformational Power of a Therapeutic Business Coach with Traci De Forge00:42:02

When Traci DeForge, a visionary entrepreneur and podcast industry trailblazer, decided it was time to hire a business coach, she expected to gain clarity on how to grow and improve her company, but she specifically chose to work with a coach who had a background as a licensed psychotherapist because her other goal was to break the patterns of self-sacrifice that were holding her back. This decision meant both the business and the business owner were about to be transformed.

This conversation recreates that transformation and how it impacted Traci's business model, leadership style, identity as a CEO, and the future of the company.  If you have asked yourself “Why would I choose to hire a business coach who is also a licensed psychotherapist?”  This Client Success Story episode is for you.

In this interview, we share:

26 Sep 2023Influencing Tomorrow: The Impact of Thought Leaders on Future Trends00:32:24

If you are an expert, who not only has knowledge, credentials and a body of work, but a unique viewpoint on your field or industry, then you may be on your way to becoming a thought leader.  The term is revered by some, rejected by others and is a source of confusion and debate by many, but the world actually needs thought leaders, now more than ever. What it does not need is more recycled and regurgitated information or opinions.

The internet is already saturated with that and it is only going to get worse in the years to come.  What is truly unique and stands out is someone who is the real deal and who has an original perspective they are willing to share in a bold, direct way.  Thinking about thought leadership?  Here is the path:

1️⃣ Speak up and challenge the status quo by having open conversations and addressing the hidden issues in our industries. True thought leadership requires being willing to talk publicly about the uncomfortable truths and topics that others tend to ignore. By doing so, we become the catalysts for positive change and progress.

2️⃣ Share your unique perspective: To make a lasting impact, it's essential to bring our own unique viewpoint and personal experiences to the table. By sharing our stories and connecting with others on a deeper level, we create relatability and foster genuine connections. Remember, your voice matters, and your perspective can make a significant difference in the lives of others.

3️⃣ Create thought leadership projects & platforms: Being a thought leader is about taking action and creating projects or platforms that amplify your message and engage your audience. Whether it's hosting events, speaking on stages or in video series, or starting initiatives, thought leadership projects enable you to develop a strong brand authority and reach a wider audience.

Thought Leaders mentioned in this episode:

16 Apr 2024Meditation for Busy Brains: Does It Really Work?00:50:28

In this episode of the Self Care Series, I’m excited to share my conversation with meditation teacher, Jude Star.

We are both entrepreneurs,  psychotherapists, and adults with ADHD who practice meditation and mindfulness.

Many people with ADHD are confused or intimidated by meditation,  have struggled to figure it out, or flat-out refuse to try, even though it can be incredibly helpful in managing our busy brains.

My hope is that this conversation will bust up some of the myths and misunderstandings,  offer practical solutions, and show you how to make meditation and mindfulness fun.

Jude and I share and compare our personal journeys and the role that mindfulness and meditation play in each of our businesses and lives.

We discuss the critical role of experimentation in finding the meditation style that truly resonates with you and the power of adopting a playful “and that’s OK”  approach which Jude reminds us fosters more consistent long-term motivation.

We debunk some common myths surrounding meditation, like the idea that you must adopt a particular posture, and practice dogmatically, and stress the importance of weaving mindfulness into routine activities, such as taking mindful walks.

We also tackle the misconceptions associated with meditation and ADHD, emphasizing the need for a joyful, light-hearted approach, and the remarkable brain chemistry changes that consistent meditation offers.  I loved hearing Jude talk about introducing meditation to a client using what he calls the “Do Nothing” practice.

30 May 2023Optimizing Your Personal Brand: Strategies for Marketing Your Expertise00:47:43

Expertise is often undervalued in today's online culture, especially when the coaching industry deems anyone an expert who is "two steps ahead" of their client, but Dr. Michelle Mazur is determined to change that. With a Ph.D. in communication, and a brilliant framework called "The Three Word Rebellion", author, speaker, podcaster, and messaging consultant, Michelle Mazur has a lot to say about expertise, the anti-expert bias that is flooding the internet with cookie-cutter programs, short-sighted advice and leaving people feeling duped.

If you are a legitimate expert, chances are you think you suck at marketing and don't know how to stand out from the crowd without feeling like a sleazeball about how to help clients who value what you have to offer to find you and hire you. So, Michelle and I are here to break it down, like this:

  • The importance of owning your expertise in your messaging and marketing.
  • The rewards and benefits of working with experts to create tailor-made solutions.
  • Face the marketing challenges experienced by experts and skilled professionals.
  • Streamline your marketing efforts by doing more with less.
  • Accelerate your success by forging alliances with fellow experts

Meet Dr. Michelle Mazur

Say hello to Michelle Mazur, an accomplished expert in marketing and messaging for entrepreneurs. With a keen understanding of how to navigate the complex online world, Michelle has dedicated her career to empowering business owners to market their expertise effectively. She's also the founder of the Expert Up Club, a supportive community that encourages experts to embrace and showcase their skills and because I was already a fan, I jumped at the chance to become one of the club's founding members.

If you remember one thing from this episode make it this:

Gaining confidence and a sense of control when it comes to owning and marketing one's expertise can be challenging for many entrepreneurs, especially when they face insecurities and potential backlash from the anti-expert community. This ownership should not be confused with arrogance, but rather an opportunity to showcase unique skills and knowledge. During the interview, Michelle pointed out that claiming one's expertise is an identity issue. Many individuals struggle with accepting and truly embracing their expertise, even when they have amassed years of experience and impressive credentials. Taking pride in being an expert allows entrepreneurs to focus on their clients while building a solid foundation for marketing.

02 Jul 2024ADHD or ADHD-ish?00:22:00

Welcome back to another episode in the Entrepreneurs with ADHD series!

Today, I’ll explore the legitimate reasons why many people decide against getting an official diagnosis, the challenges involved in obtaining one, and what you can expect if you're considering it.

I’ll also share why I’m embracing the term "ADHD-ish" and advocating for a world where everyone, diagnosed or not, can feel supported and informed.

Stick around for an episode packed with insight, empathy, and a call for broader acceptance and understanding within the ADHD community.

Whether you’ve been diagnosed, suspect you might have ADHD, or are just plain curious, this episode is filled with insights you cannot miss.

What to expect in this episode:

  • The rigorous and often frustrating process of getting an official ADHD diagnosis as an adult.
  • Why many people, despite recognizing ADHD traits, choose not to get diagnosed
  • Alternative labels like "fast-brained," "creative," or even the trendy "neurospicy."
  • How past experiences and societal misconceptions keep many from seeking an ADHD diagnosis and treatment.
  • Why I’ve started using terms like ADHD-ish to create more inclusivity

If you have been diagnosed with ADHD, one of the decisions you’ll need to make is whether to share it with others, especially people you work with.

Join fellow ADHD coach Cathy Rashidian and I on July 19th for a LinkedIn Live discussion on if, when and how to disclose your diagnosis in the workplace or in your own business.

12 Sep 2023Handling Rejection Sensitivity in Your Business Journey00:50:47

Rejection sensitivity affects many individuals, particularly those who are neurodivergent, and it can have a significant impact on their personal and professional lives.

Understanding and accepting our neurological differences can empower us to build resilience and improve our ability to handle rejection.

In this episode, I share both my perspective and strategies on how to create a business and lifestyle that honors and protects our sensitivity, allowing us to bring our unique gifts to those who need them most.

Some of these tools and techniques include powerful questions, affirmations, journaling, and mindfulness practices.

These practices can serve as powerful pattern interrupts, helping us shift our physiology and maintain control during moments of stress or anxiety. By making these tools a habit, we can confidently navigate rejection and embrace growth.

Remember, there is nothing wrong with being sensitive to rejection. It is a part of our unique makeup, and by embracing it, we can harness our sensitivity as a strength rather than a weakness.

By learning to manage rejection sensitivity, we open ourselves up to new possibilities and create a business that aligns authentically with who we are.

So, grab your favorite beverage, find a cozy spot, and tune in to this thought-provoking episode. It's time to embrace your sensitivity, develop your resilience, and thrive as an entrepreneur!

21 Nov 2023Make Better Choices by Taming Impulsiveness and Overthinking00:22:47

Making decisions in your business can be stressful, and most of us tend to rely on the same decision-making habits we've had for a long time. In this insightful solo episode, I discuss two common decision-making defaults that can lead to failure and regret. But don't worry, I also offer practical strategies to help you shift your decision-making patterns in order to make more conscious and intentional choices.

Whether you lean towards impulsivity or overthinking, I’ve got you covered with actionable tips and techniques.  Discover how to make decisions that stand the test of time and allow you to trust yourself in running your business.

If you’re new to The Driven Woman Entrepreneur Podcast,  let me introduce myself:  I’m Diann Wingert, a business coach and psychotherapist with a background in ADHD and productivity, I bring a unique blend of expertise to her work. Through this podcast and my signature coaching programs, I empower driven women to overcome mindset barriers and make impactful decisions in their businesses.

Key takeaways:

1️⃣ Recognize your decision-making default: Are you more prone to impulsivity or overthinking? Understanding your default style can help you make conscious, intentional choices.

2️⃣ Pause button strategy: Avoid making decisions on impulse by implementing a stall tactic. Take the time to think and consider the options before committing.

3️⃣ Decision partners: Seek the input of others who may provide a different perspective. Having a trusted second opinion can help you avoid the pitfalls of both impulsivity and overthinking.

Mic Drop Moment:

"Overthinkers will tell themselves ‘I'm going to take action once I have researched every possible option for the decision in front of me, I have compared the relative advantages and disadvantages of every single option before me, and I have reached a conclusion on which one is the better choice?’  Now obviously this is extremely time-consuming and exhausting. It can also be demoralizing because it reinforces our belief that we don't know what we're doing, and that we can't trust ourselves."

Is your default decision-making style interfering with your success? Take my "What's Holding You Back?" quiz, which can help you uncover the decision-making defaults that might be hindering your progress.

You'll receive a sequence of emails filled with resources and past episodes of the podcast to support your growth. Here’s the link:  https://bit.ly/whyb-quiz

My signature program, The Boss Up Breakthrough can help you right-size your business so that you can avoid burnout, establish sustainable boundaries, and uncover the profit potential in your coaching or consulting business.

17 Jan 2023Stop Getting Ready & Start Taking Action00:36:18

This episode is all about a lesson I learned the hard way in my own business and want to help you learn it quicker: Taking Action vs. Getting Ready.  What I learned is that getting ready doesn't move the needle and that there is no participation trophy in business. I learned to trust my instincts and to have specific benchmarks to know when enough preparation and planning are enough.  We also need to be leaders to our clients and team by taking action, not just focusing on our mindset. Furthermore, we need to stop overdelivering and undercharging and be mindful of not getting lost in researching and overcomplicating our ideas.

"There is no participation trophy or attendance award in business. It just doesn't matter.  Women business owners are first and foremost women. And because we're women, we have all been culturally conditioned to think that we're not enough. This belief can make you stuck in an endless cycle of getting ready instead of pulling the trigger. "

In this episode, you will learn the following:

1. How can women stop getting ready and start taking action in their businesses?

2. What are the signs to look out for that you are spending too much time getting ready instead of taking action?

3. What techniques can be used to overcome the cultural conditioning of not feeling enough and start trusting yourself and leading?

[00:00:02]

Stop Getting Ready and Start Taking Action is a hard-hitting, no-BSing solo episode. Most of the people that I work with as a consultant, coach, and business strategist are not beginners. You might be surprised how many people with years, even decades of experience can still get caught up in this trap.

[00:01:34]

Women business owners are first and foremost women. There is no participation trophy or attendance award in business. You need just enough planning to get you into action.

[00:09:07]

Early-stage solopreneurs get caught up in spending an inordinate amount of time choosing their logo, fonts, and brand colors, and creating their brand board. If you're consuming too much information and not taking action with it, that's a sign in general, being...

06 Dec 2022Business Growth Guide: Strategist vs Consultant vs Coach - Who's Right for You?00:32:45

With the dramatic growth in the number of female experts starting knowledge-based businesses in the past few years, it is no surprise that there has been an equally dramatic growth in the number of people offering to help them to reach their business goals. There are business coaches, consultants, and strategists marketing their services for every stage of business from launch to legacy, and for every possible niche and goal.

With a seemingly endless number of options, it is any wonder that many of us hire the wrong kind of help and either blame the person we hired or ourselves when we fail to get the outcome we expected.  Or maybe you know you need help but are so confused by all the options (or feeling skeptical because you’ve heard one too many horror stories.  If either of these descriptions fit, this episode is for you.

When I first made the change from being a licensed psychotherapist to being a coach, I got asked at least once a week to describe the difference between the two, but now that I have been helping female solopreneurs for the past few years, I find the conversation has shifted to people wanting to know the difference between the various types of help we might need at various stages of our business and how to hire the right person at the right time.

So, let’s start with a few definitions from the dictionary and Wikipedia…

Definition of a business strategist

According to Wikipedia: Business strategy involves answering the question: How shall we compete in this business? Said another way, business strategists help you answer the big meaty questions of what your business does, for whom, how, and why and they help you develop plans to make those things happen.

Definition of a business consultant

The Merriam-Weber online dictionary defines a consultant as one who gives professional advice or services. A business consultant is typically an experienced professional in a specific field and has a wide knowledge of the subject matter. Due to the speed of change in the online world, someone might market themselves as a consultant who has less than 2 years of experience, but in that time has worked with a high number of clients or high profile clients or both.

Definition of a business coach

Wikipedia defines coaching as a form of development in which an experienced person, called a coach, supports a learner or client in achieving a specific personal or professional goal by providing training and guidance. Business coaching can then be described as partnering with clients in the process of maximizing their potential as business owners, which includes mindset work as well as skill development.

So, In a nutshell:

If you need to figure things out or make decisions either on the big picture or something specific, hire a strategist. If you need knowledge or support to execute in a particular area of your business, look for the appropriate consultant.  If you need to work on your mindset or behaviors to better reach the goals you have set in your business, a business coach is what you should be looking for.

Best times to hire a strategist:

  • You’re trying to make sense of all your creative ideas, and opportunities for your business and how they fit together (or not)
  • You want to launch a new program, service, or offering or you want to eliminate your complicated product suite and niche down to a specialty area
  • You’re really not sure what your purpose is, the specific target market you should pursue, and how to package and price your programs and services.
  • You are feeling kind of burned out in your business or things just aren’t working as expected and you don’t know why or how to fix it.
  • You want to completely rebrand or reenvision your business and want...

24 Oct 2023Boost Your Mood, Energy, and Motivation: Simple Strategies for Mental Wellness00:38:17

As entrepreneurs, we often find ourselves on the go, constantly striving for success, and juggling multiple responsibilities. But amidst all the hustle and bustle, it's crucial to prioritize our mental health and well-being.

October is Mental Health Awareness Month and ADHD Awareness Month, so in this episode, we'll explore the importance of self-care, the impact of stress on our mental health, and practical tips for maintaining and boosting our mood, energy, and motivation.

Here are three key takeaways from this episode that you won't want to miss:🌟

1️⃣ Recognize the Impact of Stress:

The ongoing effects of the COVID pandemic and other global issues are causing uncertainty, fear, and anxiety for many of us. It's important to acknowledge the impact of stress on our mental health and take proactive steps to manage it.

2️⃣ Embrace Radical Self-Acceptance:

Instead of trying to convince ourselves that we're okay and we can keep treading water,, I advocate for radical self-acceptance. Make an agreement with yourself to accept where you are currently, even if it's not easy. This practice can have a profound impact on your well-being.

3️⃣ Prioritize Mental Health:

Building mental resilience takes time and effort, just like physical fitness. As entrepreneurs, it's easy to neglect our own well-being while focusing on our businesses. However, taking care of ourselves first allows us to show up as our best selves and better support our clients, loved ones, and communities.

Mic Drop Moment:

"The things we need to be talking about a lot more, not just in the mental health community, but in society at large, is how it feels to be living with chronic disappointment."

14 Feb 2023Navigating The Crisis of Confidence for Female Business Owners in 202300:28:55

In this podcast episode, I'm sharing my honest experiences of what I’m calling the current "Crisis of Confidence" among female business owners, grappling with the conflicting marketing messages, false promises, and broken systems that have left them feeling paralyzed and uncertain who they can trust to help them move forward.

This crisis is a result of the mass confusion and hysteria caused by the false promises of success in business ownership, the lack of funding and business loans, the exhaustion of keeping up with marketing messages, the difficulty of consistently creating quality content, and the distrust of female business coaches, consultants, and course creators. A no-BS approach and trusting in one's own inner wisdom is important in order to have a successful, sustainable business.

"If you have been duped, taken advantage of, lied to, really screwed over by a female coach or consultant or course creator, I am deeply sorry that you experienced that. And I want you to make a commitment to yourself that you are not going to maintain that as your frame of reference for getting help in the future."

In this episode, you will learn the following:

  • 1. What is causing the Crisis of Confidence among Female Business Owners?
  • 2. How is the Pandemic Affecting the Business Landscape?
  • 3. What Strategies can Help Women Business Owners Rebuild Their Confidence and Regain Their Ability to Trust Themselves?

Chapter Summaries:

[00:00:01]

Last week we featured an amazing guest interview with Nicole Kalil. Do yourself a favor and listen to that episode right after you listen to this one. I decided to record this episode after relistening to that interview.

[00:00:46]

The crisis of confidence among female business owners. If it feels like 2022 was actually a harder year for you as a business owner than 2020 or 2021, that's a reality. Business ownership is hard. There are a lot of moving parts. In her book, She Builds, Jadah Sellner talks about her idea of a female-centric model for business ownership.

As women business...

22 Nov 2022What to Do Now to Grow Your Business in 202300:29:23

It's mid-November and the holidays are right around the corner. As a solopreneur, you can go all-in on a Black Friday Sale, take time off or just hunker down and wait out the rest of the year because "nobody buys coaching or consulting services in Q4."

Well, I don't believe that, for the record, and I will still be selling in December, along with enjoying friends and family time. But, there's one more thing I am doing to insure I start 2023 strong, and prepared for growth. In fact, I'm doing it right now, so I decided to record this episode and share it with you.

I am referring to my business audit, or "clean sweep." In episode #131 I talked about the need to manage our boundaries with time, energy, effort, money, and relationships. Here's the handy checklist in case you missed it https://bit.ly/5typeschecklist. The business audit shows you how to free up money, time, and energy in a very practical way that will start to release stress and overwhelm you so you have more energy and enthusiasm for growth in the new year.

There are 3 phases of the audit:

  • List: identify where you are spending money and time
  • Leverage: assess the ROI and ROE (energy)

You may feel some emotions as you go through this process, I did, but once they had passed I felt lighter and more optimistic about the future and I believe you will too if you try this strategy. Spending time and money on things that are not serving you and your business is one of the most common ways female solopreneurs slow their growth, but there are several behaviors that also hold us back. I created a quiz with 6 different behaviors I often see in female solopreneurs that slow their success. Here’s your invitation to take the quiz, and get specific feedback, guidance, and practical advice about your particular challenge and more importantly, steps you can take to fix it.

27 Aug 2024The Four Types of Resistance Inhibiting Your Success00:41:42

Have you ever noticed that the smarter you are, the more you question yourself and the more you struggle to make the original contributions you are uniquely qualified to make? Well, I certainly have and that lead me to connect with another coach who is just as obsessed with helping high achievers overcome their resistance and avoidance, Jane Elliot, PhD.

In this compelling conversation, Jane and I explore her framework for understanding and overcoming the four shades of avoidance - the spincyclers, overdeliverers, upper limiters, and white knucklers—unpacking how these behaviors manifest and impact driven women.

We shed light on why perfectionism isn't just a standalone issue but a symptom of deeper resistance, and how being identified as gifted can be a burden, leading to genuinely painful struggles to reach inner and outer expectations.

Jane and I share our insights on the spiritual aspects of using one's gifts in service to others, the identity struggles of highly intelligent individuals, and the importance of radical self-acceptance and continuous personal evolution.

We discuss her innovative framework, and her quiz, inviting you to determine which type of  “self-eating brain” is holding you back.  You'll hear the inspiring success story of Regina, a lawyer-turned-novelist, and how Jane's transformative coaching program unblocked her brilliance.

🎙️Mic Drop Moment:

“I've found that for some people, particularly people who've been the designated achiever in their family, there can be this point where the achievement looks like its gonna start to serve them, instead of the collective and that is a very frightening moment."  Jane Elliot, PhD

Episode Highlights:

  • Resistance styles are more than just labels—they are lenses through which we can better understand our behavior and thoughts.
  • Perfectionism, often seen as a virtue, is redefined here as a mere symptom rather than an avoidance style.
  • The emotional burden of being labeled as "gifted" and pressure to perpetually meet others' standards.
  • Jane's "self-eating brain" framework offers a compelling look at how intelligent brains can become their own worst enemies

The Four Types of Self Eating Brains:

  • Spin Cyclers
  • White Knucklers
  • Overdeliverers
  • Upper Limiter

05 Dec 2023Finding the Right Size for Your Business Success00:29:25

As we approach the end of the year, it's a perfect time to reflect on your business and consider if it's time to make some changes in 2024. I work with solopreneurs and small business owners in a holistic way,  so one of my key strategies is right sizing, because it helps not only the business, but the business owner thrive.

What is rightsizing? It's the process of restructuring your business to meet new objectives and goals, increase owner and employee satisfaction, improve efficiency, and boost profits. It can involve reducing or increasing the size of your team, reorganizing your operations, or reconfiguring your offers. The main goal is to eliminate anything that's holding your business or you, as the business owner, back from both success and satisfaction.

If your business objectives have changed, your current model no longer aligns with your goals, you have skill gaps and need to bring in additional talent or hire a consultant to support your team, or personal circumstances such as burnout, illness, or increased family responsibilities are affecting your ability to run the business effectively, it’s time to consider rightsizing.

Here are 5 key takeaways you'll learn from this episode:

🔎 The meaning of rightsizing and why it's crucial to consider it for your business.

🔎Signs that indicate your business could benefit from rightsizing.

🔎The difference between rightsizing and downsizing.

🔎The advantages and drawbacks of rightsizing your business.

🔎The 4-step process to successfully right-size your business.

Mic Drop Moment 🎙️

"It's about being self aware and having a business that feels aligned with your values, your bandwidth, your stage of life, your other obligations and priorities, and giving yourself permission to make changes that will have a significant impact on the health and well-being of both your business and yourself as a business owner."

My signature program, The Boss Up Breakthrough 🔥 can help you right-size your business so that you can avoid burnout, establish sustainable boundaries, and uncover the profit potential in your coaching or consulting business.

I work in 3-month engagements and help you clarify what’s working (and why), what isn’t and what your options are for bringing the joy back to your business. It’s hard to identify and implement what’s truly necessary on your own, so if you’ve been thinking about making these changes for a while, let me help you actually move the needle.

At this time, I am only accepting 1:1 clients and the first step is to schedule a free 30-minute consultation right here: https://bit.ly/calendly-free-consultation 🌟

Want to put Insight from this episode into action?

  • Can you identify any signs that your business may benefit from rightsizing?
  • Why is it important to consider both the business owner and the business itself when rightsizing? How can the well-being of the business owner impact the sustainability of the business?
  • What do you think about rightsizing as an ongoing process, instead of a one-time event?

13 Feb 2024The Hidden Hurdles: Discover What’s Holding You Back00:29:53

There are six common patterns of beliefs and behaviors that tend to hold female entrepreneurs back, particularly those with ADHD tendencies, and in this straight-talking solo episode, I am going to discuss what to watch for, why they happen and most importantly, what to do about it.

Some of us are lucky to just have one of them, but these patterns tend to travel in packs, so it's likely that you're dealing with a couple, several or even all of them.

No matter how smart, strong, skillful, and savvy you are, these patterns are really really common and very effective at holding you back from the success you're striving for and deserve.

If you are struggling with distractibility, perfectionism, procrastination, people-pleasing, impulsivity, or time blindness, it is harder to reach your entrepreneurial goals and fulfill your business’s potential.

This episode is full of insights gained from managing my own tendencies and from working with clients just like you.

And, before you listen, remember this: none of these obstacles will prevent you from being successful as an entrepreneur, but they do make things take longer and be more strenuous. So, let’s get them under control so you can have more success and a lot less stress.

Mic Drop Moment 🎙️

15 Nov 2022Why Women Think They Suck at Making Money with Tara Newman00:58:14

Tara Newman is an organizational psychologist, certified Profit First consultant, host of the Bold Money Revolution Podcast, and leader of The Bold Profit Academy.  Tara is exactly the kind of woman I want in my inner circle because she knows firsthand that being an expert, serving with purpose, and working your ass off doesn’t add up to a profitable business for most women and she’s on a bold mission to change that.

Here are a few facts that Tara shared with me during our conversation that should help you recognize this episode is not only potentially a game changer for you and your business, but it is also one to share with another female business owner.

According to a recent UBS Survey:

  • 51% of women default to their male partner when making financial decisions but 100% of women feel comfortable making decisions about charitable giving on their own
  • 88% of female business owners make less than $100k in revenue

We also chat about what Tara calls an Owners Statement and how she differentiates between personal values and business values.

This was an eye-opener: Most women want a fully remote business but that does not mean they want an online business.

Make sure you listen for Tara’s Zombie Apocalypse analogy - which type of walking dead character are you?

It’s 4th Quarter, ladies.  Do you know where your business is going to end up for the year

For many solopreneurs, the last quarter of the year can feel like a scramble…throw together a Black Friday special, discount your fees because potential clients are thinking about their holiday budget, or just hunker down, serve your existing clients and try to reduce costs for the rest of the year?  There is nothing wrong with doing any of these things, but they are tactics, not a strategy, and tactics might produce results, but it’s a crap shoot.

I am taking on a limited number of 1:1 clients in Q4, combining strategy and mindset coaching so you have a plan AND can get past your procrastination and perfectionism to implement it.  If you want to figure out what’s working and what isn’t before another year is over, here is the link to schedule your free, no-obligation consultation:  https://bit.ly/3qrJ9YQ

20 Feb 2024How to Make Business Finances Less Intimidating for Solopreneurs00:44:48

Most podcasts for female solopreneurs focus on the more fun aspects of being your own boss, like flexibility, creativity, and building a business based on passion and purpose.  But, we really limit our success and sustainability if we neglect the “back end” of our business, the unsexy stuff like tax election, business finances and accounting.  So, my research lead me to a company that specializes in being the all in one financial solution for businesses of one, while addressing the loneliness problem of solopreneurship at the same time.

Today I’m joined by the VP of People at Collective,  Claudia Nerio, for a lively conversation about not only the risks of ignoring or bootstrapping our business finances, but more importantly the rewards of delegating them to a team of experts, and becoming part of a vibrant solopreneur community, all at once.   We talk about everything from our own experience transitioning to working from home to client success stories to our mutual love of true crime podcasts and shows.

🎙️Highlights of this conversation:

**Embracing Delegation**: Even as a solopreneur, recognize the power of focusing on your strengths. Delegating certain tasks frees up time for you to excel in your zone of genius.

**Solopreneurship & Community**: Combat the loneliness of going solo by joining a community like The Collective, which offers essential back-office support and a network of like-minded individuals.

**Navigating Finances & Tax Structure**: Understand that robust financial and legal knowledge is vital. Tapping into the collective wisdom and experience of experts at an affordable price means avoiding costly pitfalls and ensuring your solo venture thrives.

Mic Drop Moment:

"The desire to venture out on your own and to be your own boss has always been there, right? Now I think with the rise of working from home has created businesses like Collective that have found a high demand space in the market to be able to make it easier for people to go out and be a business of one just and pursue their dream."

— Claudia Nerio

Who would be a perfect fit for The Collective?

  • Coaches, Consultants, Creatives, Independent Professionals
  • Single member LLCs and one person businesses making $60-80K+ profit
  • Want financial & legal services in one stop shop
  • Looking for a community of like minded solopreneurs

If you are a solopreneur who is ready to get off the struggle bus and love your business again, this might be the perfect time to work with me. My Boss Up Breakthrough framework has just been updated to put more emphasis on implementation, so we make sure you get, and stay in momentum.

I’lll help you Boss Up your boundaries, your offers, your pricing, and your marketing strategy and remove anything that keeps you a best kept secret.  We will also make sure you are including mental wellness in your business plan so that you’re not just successful on the outside, but aligned with your values, and priorities on the inside.

24 Jan 2023Transforming Your Identity by Writing a Best Selling Book with Kim O'Hara00:43:46

Today's guest, Kim O'Hara was a Hollywood movie producer and screenwriter before transitioning to book coaching over 8 years ago.  Kim believes that everyone can write a book and that they often discover more about themselves through writing. Writing a book is much different than other forms of communication as it requires a transformation of identity and letting go of preconceived notions about ourselves and the book we are meant to write. Kim works with experts and thought leaders to help them write their books and believes that the process can lead to a great sense of both discovery and visibility.

In this episode, you will learn the following:

1. The transformation Kim went through from movie producing and screenwriting to book coaching

2. What is the divide between people who say they want to write a book and those who actually do?

3. How does writing a book require a transformation of identity?

Mic Drop Moment:

13 Dec 2022Stop Attracting Less Than Ideal Clients for Your Coaching Program with Heidi Taylor01:11:50

When I first talked with Heidi Taylor about being a guest on the podcast, I initially expected to interview her about her specific niche as a consultant - how to use an intake form or questionnaire to pre-screen potential clients for your group coaching program. Clearly, this is something I am interested in learning before re-launching The Boss Up Breakthrough again, and I know it would be of value to my podcast listeners as well.

After we confirmed and started planning the episode, Heidi send me a Voxer message asking me about my Strengths Finder Top 5 and my enneagram number. After I shared my answers, Heidi told me she had an idea for the episode, but it would require a lot more vulnerability and courage, and once she explained what she had in mind, I knew I had to say yes. Here's why...

One of the most talked about episodes of The Driven Woman Entrepreneur Podcast is episode #125, "Lessons from a Failed Launch." The reason is simple. I pulled the plug on my group program launch this fall because I wasn't able to attract enough of my "perfect fit" clients to fill the group program and I simply wasn't willing to create a less-than-optimal experience for the people who signed up. And, then I talked about it openly and honestly on my podcast, to normalize failure and model making mistakes and learning from them.

Heidi's suggestion was this: instead of you interviewing me about my area of expertise, why don't we show your audience by letting me coach you, and sharing some of the tools I use in my consulting business, so I can help you figure out why you might not be attracting enough of the right people to your group program? Spoiler alert: THIS is why I recommend you listen to episode #125 either before or after listening to this one. The cool part is that while this is about me and my business, you will find the insights so relatable for you and your business, too.

If you have ever wondered why you are attracting people to your programs, but they might not be the ones that will get the best results working with you, you are going to want to pay close attention to this conversation between Heidi Taylor and me. I honestly had so many "mind-blown" moments that it literally made me re-think so many things I thought I knew and even rendered me temporarily speechless. If you know me even a little, you know how rare THAT is. So, grab your favorite beverage and be prepared to listen, learn and grow.

My key insight from this interview:

My strengths are 60% in the domain of Strategic Thinking and 40% in the domain of Influencing, so the best clients for me would be those whose strengths are in the areas of Relationship-Building and Executing. I have been marketing to and attracting my twins, but the clients who would get the most amazing results working with me would be my opposites.

Mic Drop Moment: Your screening process needs to uncover what excites and motivates your potential client.

29 Nov 2022Playing the Long Game in Business with Sandra Scaiano00:50:33

Sandra Scaiano is a web designer and brand strategist for female entrepreneurs. After a 20-year corporate career, she created a business that brings her joy and allows her to be present for her family and partner with clients who become raving fans and long-time friends.  While many business strategists try to sell you on their "proven system",  Sandra brings out the brilliance in each of her clients and helps them create and amplify their unique brand voice so they stand out and shine.  When it comes to client attraction, it’s not about doing things better, it’s about being the singular choice for your just right clients.  To do that, you need to lean into what makes you special, and that’s where Sandra comes in.

Sandra and I connected through an online community of female business owners and I was immediately attracted to her message of playing the long game.  The majority of business strategists and coaches are preaching overnight success stories, but don’t reveal that their “proven process” has a 3% success rate.  For the other 97% (you and me and everyone else…) the long game is the game.  We need to have the patience to try new things, start before we are ready, trust our instincts, and dance with failure.  Over time, and through grit, determination, and resilience, we succeed.  When you infuse joy into your business and learn to love the process, not just strive for the results, you have a business that is purpose-filled and profitable.

Mic drop moment:  "I have a front-row seat to the back end of people's businesses."

Highlights from this exciting interview:

  • Creativity + strategy allows you to be your most authentic self
  • Planning  & strategy = consistent results
  • Don't crowdsource your business decisions to FB groups!
  • Playing the long game is fun when you infuse joy into your business

29 Aug 2023How Do You Respond to Expectations?00:42:31

In this episode, I will introduce you to one of my favorite tools in my business, The Four Tendencies framework for dealing with expectations.

How we deal with expectations, our own and those of others has a significant impact on our business and personal lives.  Some of us always go the extra mile for others but let ourselves down on a regular basis and others are the exact opposite.

Knowing our own tendency and that of our clients, our team members, and even our friends and family members can make the difference between referral business, testimonials, and long-term relationships and negative reviews, disappointment, and frequent turnover.

This framework is taken from the book, “The Four Tendencies” by Gretchen Rubin. And in this episode, I will explore each one: Upholder, Questioner, Obliger, and Rebel, and how they impact our ability to meet expectations.

The information I share will center around the common challenges each tendency faces, as well as their unique strengths. By the end of this episode, you'll have a deeper understanding of your own tendency and how it influences your interactions with others and your approach to meeting expectations.

There are 5 important questions at the end and an invitation to DM me on Linked In or Instagram to let me know what you think MY tendency is and to share yours!

Don’t forget to grab the worksheet that summarizes each of the Four Tendencies to use in your business and with your team, here:  https://bit.ly/four-tendencies-guide

To go deeper after listening:

1. How do you typically approach meeting expectations in your business or work life? Do you tend to prioritize meeting the expectations of others or your own?

2. Have you ever felt misunderstood or frustrated by the expectations placed on you by others? How did this impact your interactions and relationships?

3. In what ways do you think understanding your tendency in meeting expectations can benefit your mental health and overall well-being?

4.  How do you navigate the tension between meeting the expectations of others and prioritizing your own needs and self-care? What practices or strategies have you implemented to find a balance?

5. When working with others, what steps can you take to ensure that expectations are clear and achievable for everyone involved?

16 Jul 2024ADHD, FOMO, and RSD: Managing Digital Distractions and Emotional Sensitivity00:37:22

Many of us with ADHD tend to be collectors.  Collectors of everything from rescue dogs to creative projects to information.  The ease of acquiring information in the digital age makes it close to impossible to know when we have collected enough.  Is there any objective measure of when “research” turns into a rabbit hole?

Add to this tendency the fact that we often struggle with FOMO and the pervasive sense that we are not doing enough, are falling behind, aren’t where we are supposed to be and generally not keeping up.

FOMO renders us more susceptible to experiencing RSD (rejection sensitive dysphoria) because we are more vulnerable to criticism when we are already criticizing ourselves.

So, in this insightful episode, I describe the intersections between ADHD, FOMO, RSD and information overload, with the goal of normalizing how common this is, how much anxiety and stress it causes, and what we can do to manage it.

Here’s a sneak peek to what you’ll learn:

  • Understand how impulsivity and novelty seeking sets us up to become social media junkies.
  • How to set boundaries and prevent information overload and overwhelm.
  • Boredom, loneliness, and isolation are triggers for FOMO - learn to recognize and tackle them head-on.
  • From mindfulness to mini-breaks, discover actionable steps to combat FOMO in real time.
  • The often overlooked link between FOMO and RSD - let’s learn to protect our sensitivity

Hey, we all struggle with social comparisons and the need for validation, but it’s incredibly important to focus on meaningful experiences with people who genuinely care about us.

This episode is packed with strategies that not only help you combat FOMO and RSD but also ensure that you live a more connected and purposeful life.

14 Nov 2023Why Women Get Stuck Climbing the Corporate Ladder with Erica Anderson Rooney00:48:53

If you are a driven woman who has been climbing the corporate ladder, you have no doubt noticed that diversity is not the norm. The broken rungs on the ladder start early on in the climb and are often camouflaged.

We blame ourselves, experience gaslighting from other women who think there’s only room for one of us at the top and so many more challenging circumstances that it’s no wonder an increasing number of women are opting for entrepreneurship.

In today's episode, my friend Erica Anderson Rooney and I delve into the challenges faced by women in reaching positions of power in the corporate world.

We expose the reality of the "broken rung," as the first of many challenges as women attempt to advance where gender disparities are the norm, and women often learn far too late in the game that the game is rigged.

We discuss how taking time off for children can set women back in their careers, widen the pay gap and examine the biases and challenges present in both corporate life and entrepreneurship.

The reality is, that both are challenging and the best way to succeed at facing these challenges is to know what you’re up against.

Erica shares her personal experience of realizing that she actually couldn't trust her mentor, so she made the courageous decision to leave her position in search of a C-level role where she could truly make a difference.

Here are some of the highlights of this episode 🌟

  • Taking Responsibility for Personal Well-being
  • Authenticity and Emotional Well-being
  • Challenging Societal Expectations
  • Outgrowing Relationships
  • Listening to Intuition and Body Signals:
  • Questioning Beliefs and Developing Resilience
  • Living Authentically and Making New Choices

13 Jun 2023Forget Generic Advice: Tailored Email Marketing Strategies with Bev Feldman00:45:40

Ever felt like you don’t know what to write to your email subscribers, or don’t even know why you have a list, to begin with?  If you find yourself spinning in circles trying to figure out how often to email your list, what to include in your emails, and what metrics to measure, you are not alone.

Most of the mass-marketed advice we have been subjected to is meant for course creators and coaches who build their list with Facebook ads, a 2% conversion rate, and plenty of unsubscribers just looking for the latest freebie, what are the standards for experts and thought leaders?

Enter Bev Feldman, Your Personal Tech Fairy.  Bev is a seasoned email marketing strategist whose expertise in email automation and relationship building has made her a sought-after resource for experts and consultants looking to improve their email marketing game.

In this episode, Bev & I dig into:

  • Focusing on an engaged email list instead of just amassing huge numbers.
  • Personalizing email marketing based on the business model and individual persona.
  • Selecting the email marketing platform suited to your enterprise needs.
  • Engaging expert assistance in navigating complex email marketing systems.
  • Establish lasting connections with clients through shared values and transparency.

The key to a successful email strategy lies in understanding your audience's requirements and tailoring your messaging accordingly.  During the interview, Bev mentioned our mutual mentor, Dr. Michelle Mazur,  who believes if you have a high-ticket, high-touch program with a handful of clients a year, you can probably just email your people quarterly and spend your time on other networking and relationship-building activities.

04 Apr 2023From Visionary to Implementer: Jancina Dyer's Identity Transformation00:45:49

After a lifetime of conforming to the expectations of others and having her creative ideas dismissed because she was "just the assistant," Jancina Dyer refused to give up on her big vision and embarked on an entrepreneurial journey of self-discovery and success.

While most leaders in the beauty industry are half her age, Jan Dyer is just getting started as the founder, owner, and CEO of the Colorado Lash Company. She is a misfit entrepreneur, driven by passion and purpose, who left a successful career in ophthalmology to pursue her dream of owning a business in the beauty industry.

What I love most about Jan’s story is that she is a true visionary but did not believe she could execute her brilliant ideas.  She bought course after course, took program after program, and even hired more than one coach, before deciding to work with me.  Even though she had felt stuck for years, she never gave up on her big vision and in just 12 weeks, the progress she made was absolutely transformational.

In this Client Success Story episode, we will recreate Jan’s experiences of:

  1. Transforming her identity when leaving a successful career to pursue a passion.
  2. Overcoming ageism and sexism in a female-dominated industry
  3. Developing a strategy to turn her creative ideas into actionable plans.

If you resonated with Jan Dyer’s struggles, maybe it’s time you experienced your own Boss Up Breakthrough. 03 Sep 2024The Transformational Power of Rebranding00:41:49

When you’re just getting started, there’s nothing wrong with DIY’ing your brand assets in Canva or hiring a designer on Fiverr or Upwork.  But, once you’re established and have outgrown your existing brand, it may be time to partner with a design professional.

We are one week away from revealing the new branding for this podcast, so I invited the graphic designer I’m working with, Jess Malli Mercier, to join me in talking about her approach, why she prefers helping established businesses to rebrand and how to know when it’s the right time to do so, and our experience working together.

We talked about the true essence of a brand—it's more than just a logo and colors; it’s a reflection of your core values and how people feel when they encounter your business. If you do any kind of client services work, Jess shared invaluable insights on the benefits of a collaborative approach and the value of an emotional connection.

Whether you're feeling disconnected from or bored with your current branding or simply curious about the rebranding process, this episode is packed with valuable advice and personal insights.

🔑 Key Takeaways:

  • Collaborative Approach: Establishing a genuine relationship and clear communication with your designer is pivotal.
  • Authenticity & Consistency: Your brand’s visual representation should authentically reflect your core values and ensure consistency across all touchpoints to create a memorable and trustworthy brand experience.
  • Safety & Trust: Rebranding is a journey that requires introspection, trust, and sometimes stepping out of your comfort zone to truly represent the evolution of yourself and your business.

🎙️Mic Drop Moment:

“Be yourself. Be unique. What are the elements of you that are that are the most important and the most memorable? Let's show people that."  Jess Malli Mercier

28 Mar 2023Does Your Business Need a Makeover?00:35:30

Do you remember going to the mall?  Do you even remember malls?  Well, I do and one of the things I remember best is this: the only way to enter one of the big department stores was to go through the bright and shiny cosmetics department, full of “beauty advisors” with brushes and sponges in hand, dying to make you over in the latest fashion shades.  And who could resist?

"There's nothing like seeing another woman sitting on the high stool and getting that temporary boost of dopamine and confidence that comes with having her face completely made over by a beauty advisor."

We do love a good makeover, don’t we?  But what if what you are sick of, fed up with, and fantasizing about making over is your business?  Should you or shouldn’t you?

In this podcast episode, I guide you through the not-so-simple process of determining whether a business needs a makeover or not, exploring the impulses to blow things up vs. making a long-term investment in building a sustainable business. It can be hard to tell when it’s time for a business makeover because it can range from needing to work on communication and leadership skills, adjust expectations, or shift from a business that is merely financially successful to one that allows you to use your gifts and express your zone of genius.

Many entrepreneurs have difficulty determining if a makeover is necessary, so it is often helpful to hire a small business strategist or coach to help you figure out the next steps. After all, who doesn’t love bringing some fresh new energy into what they spend most of their waking hours doing?

In this episode, you will learn the following:

1. Have you ever felt like your business needs a makeover?

2. What are the signs that it’s time to makeover your business?

3. Could your business be built on your zone of genius instead?

4. How my client Stacey made over her expert business

5. Coming soon: Jan’s business makeover in Ep #152

17 Sep 2024Shame-free Accountability Through Body-Doubling00:37:01

If you tend to procrastinate on important but not urgent tasks (or those that your brain finds tedious), you are not alone.  Some tasks, like tax preparation and folding laundry, are nearly universal in triggering resistance, so it’s time to embrace strategies that allow us to get sh*t done, without shame.

The popularity of body-doubling (also called virtual co-working) is partially due to the growth of remote work, but mostly due to the need for non-judgmental accountability.

After sampling several body doubling platforms, I decided to partner with Focused Space, an innovative company that combines body doubling with mindfulness practices and a virtual community.

In this episode of ADHD-ish, I am joined by Focused Space’s Becca Groner.  With a background in improv comedy and a deep understanding of ADHD tendencies, she brings a human-centered approach to productivity and teamwork, which you will experience in our conversation.

By emphasizing community, flexible accountability, and personal well-being, platforms like Focused Space are paving the way for a more connected and productive future for individuals and teams.

Fun Fact: Several members of the Focused Space community were able to finish writing books during their virtual coworking sessions. 📚✨

Be sure to listen until the end for a special partnership announcement offering listeners a free month of Focused Space, and valuable resources like the Procrastination Playbook.

So grab your headphones, and let's get started on creating a more joyful, connected, and productive work environment.

In this fascinating interview,  my guest Amira Alvarez, CEO of The Unstoppable Woman, speaker, podcaster, and leadership coach and I get real about some of the topics so many women steer clear of.

We don’t shy away from the tough stuff here on The Driven Woman Podcast, so Amira and I do a deep dive into the shadow side of being driven and ambitious. The shadow side is what ruins our health, our relationships, and often, the business we are trying so damn hard to grow and scale.

15 Feb 2022Closing the Performance Gap: A Client Success Story with Dallas00:48:21

When you are a highly educated professional woman who knows she is capable of so much more than you are demonstrating in your career and personal life, it can be tough to figure out where the real problem lies. Is it your motivation, your expectations, your habits, your mindset, or a combination of all of the above, and how do you figure it out?

Luckily for my client, Dallas, one of her friends had worked with me and told her what a great experience she had, and then she listened to a few episodes of this podcast and thought, “this might be just what I need.”  There is a hilarious ‘blooper” during this episode that demonstrates why radical self-acceptance is one of the core principles I practice and teach.  You will see why if you stick with the episode all the way to the end.

We talk about why she decided to work with me, what we focused on and how it has transformed her thinking about money, being a lawyer, and allowed her to reach her billing goals without so much stress and beating up on herself.  It was not a perfect and predictable path and at one point, Dallas felt like she had lost sense of where we were going, so we talk about how we resolved that.

Here are the highlights of this conversation:

  • The performance gap between our productivity and our potential
  • Toxic productivity and its alternative
  • How to practice radical self-acceptance one day at a time
  • Right now goals vs legacy goals
  • Pain, suffering, and unnecessary suffering

This episode’s Mic Drop Moment: “ I learned to stop selling from a hypothetical pocketbook.” (Dallas)

Are you feeling the frustration of knowing you are capable of so much more but don’t know how to close your performance gap?

22 Feb 2022PR & Pitching for Experts with Michelle Glogovac00:47:36

I am always excited to meet another woman who is crushing it in her online business, but the ones that become my biz besties are usually the women who were really successful in a corporate, nonprofit, or academic career before they said “Bye, Felicia!” before going out on their own.

Today’s guest, Michelle Glogovac, CEO of MLG Collective, a boutique PR & Podcast Pitching Agency that helps authors, entrepreneurs, and experts share their stories. She decided that an online business would suit her life as a wife and mom a whole lot better than her corporate path of working in the aviation industry and give the creative freedom she craved.  How often do you meet a badass biz boss who was up to her eyelashes in conversations about jet fuel in a former life?  How’s that for a career pivot?

Michelle and I became pals during a business retreat and decided that interviewing one another for our podcasts was a not-to-be-missed opportunity.  Her superpower is seeing the story inside of experts that it is hard for them to recognize and share. This girl understands that she is in the relationship business, not the PR business or jet fuel business.

She is not only a Podcast Matchmaker but has actually introduced two couples as well.  Michelle has integrity,  genuinely gets to know her clients by reading their books, listening to their podcasts, and doing a deep dive into their online presence. She hates sleazy sales tactics and is as allergic to “copy & paste” pitches as I am.

Highlights of today’s episode:

  • Michelle talks about the differences between promoting and sharing
  • We ponder why the more of an expert you are, the harder it is to embrace it
  • How she feels about authors now that she’s on her way to becoming one
  • Two amazing stories of what can happen when you hire a pitch queen (Michelle loved it when I called her that!)

Mic Drop Moment:

“I actually have to believe in you to pitch your business, book, or brand”

01 Mar 2022The Boundaries Series: Creating Consistent Client Outcomes00:21:29

Today’s solo episode tackles the problem of saying “yes” to clients you probably should say “no” to and why, and how to both create predictable outcomes and avoid both negative ones and surprises.   Creating a specific way of working with people and sticking to it, instead of trying to help everyone you think you should, or believe you can spare you countless heartaches.

The truth is that you really can’t help everybody.  None of us can.  Your personal values may include being flexible, adaptable, and accommodating, but this can get you into some real hot water in your business. This is not a matter of experience or expertise, or how long you’ve been in the business, it’s about the slippery slope of unmet expectations and human nature.

This episode is the first in The Boundaries Series, where we will be exploring a number of things that we do that limit our success because we have weak-ass boundaries and don’t even know it.   Spoiler alert:  the way I look at and talk about boundaries is guaranteed to open your eyes to all kinds of things you probably aren’t even thinking about, in addition to the boundary nonsenses you already know you’re dealing with.

Here is a quick overview of what we are going to cover in today’s solo episode:

  • The Default Yes is a major blindspot we can’t afford to keep ignoring
  • Pink Flags to look for when deciding who to work with
  • A Signature System helps you create predictably good outcomes
  • How to improve your practices to ensure satisfied clients

So, that’s all for now, Driven Woman!  See you next week, when Dr. Amanda Barrientez, Founder and CEO of NFA (No Fucking Around) Money is going to be my guest.  Dr. Amanda went from food stamps to 6 figures

08 Mar 2022The NFA (No-F*cking-Around) Money Mindset with Dr. Amanda Barrientez00:52:44

Ever since I was a teenager, I have loved a good makeover.  I am completely enthralled by the dramatic transformations on RuPaul’s Drag Race and Property Brothers, but I am also a sucker for a great dog rescue story where an allegedly aggressive Pittie becomes another family’s Good Boi.  But, the stories that inspire me most are those of women who had their back against the wall and came out swinging.   No matter what is in her rearview mirror, when a resilient and determined woman reaches her point of no return, she shifts into a “no fucking around” mindset, and from that point forward, everything changes.

Today’s guest, Amanda Barrientez, also known as Dr. Amanda, The Money Healer has the kind of story I love the most.  Because I was a social worker and psychotherapist who worked with kids from disadvantaged backgrounds in a former life, Amanda’s early life experiences sounded all too familiar.  Fast forward to marriage, kids, grad school, divorce, and Amanda found herself on the professor track but paid so poorly that she and the kids qualified for food stamps.  This was her NFA turning point.

Amanda recently interviewed me for her YouTube NFA Money Stories series and I learned then that nothing is off-limits for her, so we were able to go deep into some really important areas not often discussed on a podcast.  I am grateful that she was so open and generous with her life experience and the work she has done to transform it. This is not your typical rags to riches story where it's all sunshine and rainbows, touting entrepreneurship as easy and fun.  One of the many things we agreed on is that getting what you want is hard.  And it’s also worth it.

Here are a few of the highlights:

  • Growing up as a little brown girl in an all-white upper-class neighborhood
  • Learning about all the ‘isms’ in grad school after being raised by evangelicals
  • Ditching the victim mindset for extreme ownership
  • Her 3 step system for blasting your money blocks

Amanda walked away from being a professor to become a money mindset and manifestation coach. She helps female entrepreneurs reach 6 figures and beyond through her 3 step money mindset system and NFA Money Mamas mastermind.  Smart, funny, down to earth, and refreshingly candid, this convo was satisfying on so many levels and you are just going to love it and her.

15 Mar 2022The Boundaries Series: Obligation Management00:36:45

This episode is the second in The Boundaries Series, where we are unpacking the challenge of doing things we don’t really want to be doing, and for all the wrong reasons. Warning: If you have not already heard me say this,  I have fully embraced the feedback that one of my favorite clients by calling me “The Speaker of Uncomfortable Truths.”  This episode reflects that.

In my work with female solopreneurs, I often hear about situations my clients are involved in but wish they weren’t.  Sometimes, the situation involves a team member or a client, but it can also be with someone they collaborate with.  The underlying issue is related to boundaries and specifically how we deal with feeling obligated, based on the principle of reciprocity.

The bottom line is that each of us has limits when it comes to our capacity and if we are spending time, energy, effort, and dollars doing things out of a sense of obligation, rather than choice,  we will feel strained and drained, not to mention resentful.  If you are a creative or a healer,  in particular, this will drag you toward burnout and possibly clinical depression.  Time management is important, energy management is important, but obligation management is also necessary, so let’s get to it.

Here is a quick overview of what we are going to cover in today’s solo episode:

  • Why resentment is the emotion we need to pay attention to in business
  • The connection between bandwidth, boundaries, and burnout
  • Reciprocity is the exchange of mutual benefit.  Learn to measure the mutual part.
  • Know why you are saying yes to the things you are saying yes to
  • Lessons from Buddhism that help me deal with difficult people

So, that’s all for now, Driven Woman!  See you next week, when Abby Herman, Content Strategist and host of The Content Experiment is going to be my guest.   I first came across Abby’s work over a year ago, but we did not connect until we both joined...

22 Mar 2022The Client Journey in 6 Steps with Abby Herman00:56:01

If you have an online business (or even a brick-and-mortar business you market online) you are a content marketer.  Content includes blogs, podcasts, YouTube channels, email sequences, newsletters, sales pages, social media posts, and even short-form videos on TikTok, Linked In, IG, or FB.

Content is everywhere and in order to leverage the know, like, and trust factor, you need to have a strategy, not just put yourself out there in a random way and hope it works.  Whether you have a lot to say but it’s all over the place or your mind goes completely blank the minute you sit down in front of your laptop to write an email sequence, there is hope for you.

Today’s guest, Abby Herman was an elementary school teacher who took her talent for writing and teaching and launched a business as a content strategist over a decade ago.  She helps online entrepreneurs to create awareness, educate and inform, demonstrate their expertise, convert consumers to customers, and long-lasting relationships. She has a way of thinking about content creation that takes the guessing and stressing right out, making it more simple and sustainable than you ever dreamed of.

I first learned of Abby over a year ago, when I heard her being interviewed on a podcast, but we did not connect in a meaningful way until we both joined Podwize, the membership community for podcasters run by Angie Trueblood, a couple of months ago.  The day this episode is being published is the day Abby is interviewing me for her podcast, The Content Experiment.  How’s that for synchronicity?

Here are a few of the highlights of our convo:

  • What minimum viable content marketing looks like
  • The health journey that led Abby to rebrand her podcast and business
  • How her personal values show up in how much free content she shares
  • When you don’t choose, you actually lose (less really is best)
  • What content to give away for free and what to charge for
  • Easy ways to stay top of mind with former clients and customers

29 Mar 2022The Boundaries Series: How to Create a Distraction-Free Business00:48:22

This is the third in The Boundaries Series of solo episodes, and this one is called How to Create a Distraction-Free Business.  Spoiler alert: it comes down to self-awareness, self-acceptance, and having decent boundaries.

Most female solopreneurs are working from home, with one or more other beings in their space.  Knowing how to manage our distractions and how we use distractions to avoid other uncomfortable feelings like resentment and self-doubt are half the battle to being productive from home.

If you are a work-from-home solopreneur in a service-based business, I encourage you to go back and listen to the previous episodes in this Boundaries Series: EP #95: Creating Consistent Client Outcomes and EP #97 Obligation Management.  Here is some of what you will hear in this episode:

Tools for Self Awareness when it comes to distractions:

  • Know your limits
  • Environmental engineering
  • Clutter and distractibility
  • Distractions vs interruptions
  • Circadian rhythms
  • Decision Fatigue
  • Other People’s Problems
  • Boredom threshold
  • Mindset
  • Your competition
  • Digital information / FOMO
  • Imposter syndrome, self-doubt, perfectionism

Strategies mentioned in this episode:

  • Time tracking
  • Time blocking
  • Focus Mate
  • Pomodoro Technique

I don’t want to say too much about what I have...

05 Apr 2022My 100th Episode Special Edition: Lessons in Entrepreneurship from "Inventing Anna"00:30:11

The tagline for “Inventing Anna” is: “Inspired by the true story of a total fake.”

Of course, I was instantly hooked, along with millions of other Netflix subscribers.  Within a week, several of my clients, friends, and family members were messaging me, excitedly asking “Are you watching Inventing Anna?”  and I am pretty sure I know why.

First of all, I was a licensed therapist for many years before becoming a coach, I am attracted to complex and complicated characters, and I am known for having really good instincts about people.  They know I am especially fascinated by women who step out of the shadows and shine brightly, one way or another. I had never even heard of Anna Delvey before seeing it in the top series section on Netflix but became pretty obsessed with her.

After binge-watching the Netflix series, I read articles, watched interviews and documentaries, and scrolled through all the IG accounts that may or may not be hers.  But this episode is not about my psychological assessment of Anna’s character, motives, or personality pathology.  It is about my thoughts on the skills and mindset that almost made her a very successful founder and entrepreneur, someone I think we can learn from, regardless of what we think of her motivation or methods.

So, what ARE those lessons?

  • Manage your image
  • Network with the right people
  • Project unshakable confidence
  • It takes money to make money
  • Develop resilience

This episode includes a clip from my interview on “The True Fiction Project Podcast’ with host Reenita Hora.  If you want to hear me speculate about what drives Anna Delvey, whether she was/is a narcissist or a sociopath, did a history of childhood trauma leave her incapable of empathy, and more, check it out!

https://spoti.fi/3uPFHtM

There was very little holding Anna Delvey back, and she didn’t let “little things” like a lack of money, connections or influence stand in her way.  At least until those four years in Riker’s Island held her back in a very big way.  But what about you?  Chances are there is a single habit that if you could identify and change would help you realize your entrepreneurial dreams without breaking any laws!

If you are getting a lot of good tips from The Boundaries Series, don’t forget to join us next week for another kickass episode, the last one in the series.  It is episode #101 and the title is: ...

12 Apr 2022The Boundaries Series: Boundaries as Self Care00:32:43

This is the fourth and final episode in The Boundaries Series, and this one is called “Boundaries as Self Care”.  Many solopreneurs were superstars in their former jobs and many of us came to self-employment with ingrained habits of overworking including taking work home, skipping vacations, and even going to work when we were sick, instead of taking our company PTO.

Women are not conditioned to put their needs first, so when we become solopreneurs, we often end up over extended, overworking, and overwhelmed between the needs of our families and the needs of our business. In this episode, we are going to talk about boundaries as self-care.  Here is some of what you will hear in this episode:

  • Boundaries start with self-awareness and self acceptance
  • Habits we developed in the corporate world that set us up for burnout
  • You are your own Human Resources Department
  • Why you can’t succeed with advice from celebrity coaches & online gurus
  • Entrepreneurs and mental health challenges

If you are your own boss, be a good boss to yourself and structure your business with boundaries and self-care in mind.  Not only will you reduce the risk of burnout, but you will also be a more successful and satisfied business owner.  Unless burnout is part of your business plan, we need to make self-care a priority.

Things to consider in establishing your self-care boundaries:

  • Workdays & hours
  • Time off for vacations, holidays, conferences
  • Deadlines & turn around time
  • Size of team & communication styles
  • Revenue goals, price point, and profit margin

I encourage you to listen to EP #95: Creating Consistent Client Outcomes, EP #97 Obligation Management, and EP #99 The Distraction-Free Business.  Don’t be surprised if you find yourself talking back to my tough-love approach in these Boundaries Series episodes.  I had to learn these lessons the hard way myself and they do tend to need some repetition to take hold.

19 Apr 2022Breaking the Box for Married Female Entrepreneurs with Naketa Thigpen00:49:05

My guest today, Naketa Thigpen, and I have so much in common that this interview is actually our third or fourth conversation since we were introduced. We both have a background as licensed clinical social workers, we both have a childhood trauma history and we share very similar views about women and ambition, the patriarchy, and being a bit too out of the box to ever fit in.

Naketa’s book, Selfish is currently on my bedside table, and her podcast, Balance Boldly for Ambitious Women in Business is in my earholes on a weekly basis.  We quickly discovered that we can literally talk for hours unless one of us calls it quits and I honestly feel like we have been friends for years, not weeks.

The number of female entrepreneurs continues to rise, but there really aren’t too many people talking about women and ambition, giving ourselves permission to want, do and have more or the impact of entrepreneurship on marriage.  These intersections are where Naketa is making her mark and creating her thought leader legacy.  Join us for this wide-ranging conversation about being bold, creating joy, and balancing a romantic partnership with a growing business.

In this interview, Naketa breaks down and explains the GIFT method she created to invite ambitious married entrepreneurs into a new way of looking at themselves and their life and work style:

  • Gratitude
  • Imagination
  • Forgiveness
  • Taking Action

We talk about where drive and ambition come from, the difference between being creative and being an entrepreneur, where the concept of selfishness comes from, and how Naketa has redefined it for herself and the community of married female entrepreneurs she serves.  I share a story about how the word selfish impacted me when I chose to end my previous marriage and how I think of selfishness now.  Naketa has a unique perspective on gratitude and why it has to be the real deal, not pretending to be grateful as an excuse for not pursuing our deepest dreams.

26 Apr 2022Feeling Stuck? Bust Through Fear, Uncertainty & Doubt (FUD) to Achieve Your Goals00:34:35

Everyone has heard of FOMO, but have you also heard of FUD?   I hadn’t either, until a recent conversation with my son Andre on the topic of bitcoin.  FUD stands for Fear, Uncertainty & Doubt and I am going to guess that these emotions are something you are more than familiar with, especially during these last couple of years.  Once I heard the term and learned its history, I actually scrapped the podcast I was planning to create for this week and recorded this one instead.  I hope you agree that it is both timely and relevant.

The acronym FUD was coined in 1975, but variations of it have been used back to the 1920s and even in the late 1860s.  It is a propaganda tactic used in politics, polling, public relations, sales and marketing, and inside cults.  FUD involves disseminating negative and false, misleading, or dubious information with the purpose of evoking fear.

That fear is intended to manipulate people into remaining loyal party members, clients, or customers by highlighting the perceived risk of exploring alternatives.  From fake and conspiracy theories to the sleazy tactics of ‘bro’ marketing,  examples of FUD in modern culture are too numerous to count.

In this episode, I will share:

  • Why trust is at an all-time low and how it affects us as business owners
  • The cult-like FUD tactics of many coaching programs and nearly all MLMs
  • How unconscious FUD programming affects both buyers and sellers
  • Reflections on my past careers in sales and psychotherapy through a FUD lens
  • What to look for in your own business practices that might be a little bit FUD-ish

So, that’s all for now, Driven Woman!  Please join us next week for another amazing guest interview with Kathi Burns, a Certified Professional Organizer who is going to share why getting rid of your paper files is the gateway to a life of freedom.

03 May 2022Declutter Your Life: Make Space for What Matters00:47:27

Kathi Burns definitely found her calling as a professional organizer. She has been helping others eliminate clutter for over 17 years, has written an entire book on the subject, hosts a weekly podcast called Organized and Energized, and is even more enthusiastic about eliminating clutter to create more freedom than she was when she started.

Once I learned that Kathi had been a travel writer who literally lived out of a suitcase and that she has also lived on a boat, I knew she was a bona fide expert in doing more with less.  This conversation was both informative and fun, because I know quite a bit about productivity, but learned so much from Kathi about the benefits of tackling our problems with paper.

Addressing our paper piles is an easy way to create more order in our environment and eliminating them frees up both space and energy, reduces distractions, and increases clarity. We all have better things to do than spend an average of 3 hours a week searching for things, which is one of the eye-opening facts Kathi shared in this lively conversation.  After implementing her Get It Gone system, Kathi promises her clients that they can find anything they need in 30 seconds. How’s that for a value proposition?

So, if you’re ready to listen and learn from this self-proclaimed Paper Wrangler, and go from piling to filing, let’s jump right in!

What you’ll learn:

  • Kathi’s 5 category paper organization system
  • The 3 main saboteurs of being organized
  • Letting go is a muscle that needs regular exercise
  • Less stuff = more clarity + fewer distractions

Don’t forget to join us next week for Episode #105 when I return with a solo...

10 May 2022Therapy vs. Coaching: Choosing the Right Path to Your Goals00:45:39

One of the subjects I am asked for my opinion on most often is the confusion between therapy and coaching.  I guess you could say I am uniquely qualified to address this topic because before I trained and certified as a coach, I was a licensed psychotherapist for over twenty years.  It has become a complicated, contradictory and at times controversial subject and one that a growing number of people are talking about.

After being asked this question in a number of interviews on other podcasts, I decided it was time to discuss it on The Driven Woman.  The point here is not that therapists are better, safer, or more competent across the board.  I know many fine coaches who do excellent work and hold themselves to standards of integrity and ethics that equal those of any licensed therapist. I have also known a number of therapists who were mediocre at best.

In this episode, I hope to raise awareness, stimulate some thinking, and most of all, encourage people to trust their intuition and do their homework.   In this episode, I make the offer to personally respond to anyone who has a follow-up question on this subject after listening to the full episode.  The options are:  DM me at IG @coachdiannwingert or email me at diann@diannwingertcoaching.com.

Discussed in this episode:

  • How do therapists and coaches differ in terms of their credentials: training, licensing, certification, and regulation
  • The connection between the medical model and mental health stigma
  • Unsung heroes: bartenders, personal trainers, massage therapists, and hair stylists
  • The big issues:  boundaries, confidentiality, privacy, dual relationships
  • Insight and healing or growth and goal achievement
  • Should you work with both a therapist and a coach at the same time?
  • Pricing and packaging of therapy vs coaching and how this influences our expectations and outcomes

17 May 2022Writing Your Own Rules in Online Business with Deanna Seymour00:48:12

Just imagine a high school art teacher, wife, and mom trying to start an online business.  She loves her students and teaching itself but all the rules of the profession are sucking the joy right out of her.  In spite of her boundless enthusiasm and endless creativity, plus years of side hustle experience, like the rest of us, this wantrepreneur turns to the alleged “experts” in the field, the high priestesses of online marketing.  The ones who make 'the rules".

These celebrity coaches and online marketing gurus have made multi-million dollars selling their courses and coaching programs, and they have pages and pages of testimonials gushing over them, so it had to be “The Way”, and they had a right to make The Rules, only it wasn’t and they don't.  Several courses later, this teacher, whom we will call Deanna (because that’s actually her name) is not only not getting anywhere closer to the promised land of the laptop lifestyle, but she is starting to feel just as disillusioned with this whole online entrepreneur thing as she was as a teacher.  See the real problem?

Is poor Deanna doing something wrong or did she simply get caught up in the “results, not typical” marketing hype that has made celebrity coaches fabulously wealthy while leaving most of their students blaming themselves for not being one of the success stories they bring on stage at their high ticket sales events?   Well, as you might have guessed, Deanna is today’s guest on The Driven Woman Podcast and she is also the graphic designer and coach that I recently hired and will start working with in June, to help me write MY own rules when it comes to Instagram.

Here is what you’ll learn in today’s episode:

  • How Deanna and I met:  In Angie Trueblood’s Podwize membership
  • Why she broke up with social media for 6 weeks and what it taught her
  • Why Deanna no longer considers the $$$ she spent on courses to be a total waste
  • What she thinks is the key to dealing with the fear of being vulnerable online

24 May 2022Surviving Life's Challenges: Essential Lessons for Overcoming Adversity00:24:12

After many years of “winging it” as my preferred modus operandi, I knew I would have to become less spontaneous and more of a planner when I decided to launch this podcast two years ago.  Once I decided to commit to it,  I learned to become a planner and even found I liked it.  But sometimes, in spite of our planning, things go sideways and shit happens. My husband and I just relocated for the second time in barely three years and the experience has been full of surprises, and not the good kind.

This episode is not about planning or being consistent, at least not directly.  It is about the fact that many times in life, things do not go as we intend or expect, no matter how well we have planned.  Life has an uncanny knack for throwing us just enough curveballs to have some of us thinking ‘why bother?” about planning, while others become humorless control-freaks trying to get life to conform to their will.

I decided to record this episode instead of the one I had planned in order to give you a behind the scenes look into some of my personal challenges,  a peek into my podcast production process and share my perspective, evolution and growth as a human being. My life experiences over the past few weeks have been such a good reminder that we need to manage our mindset, not just our To Do list.  My editor gave it a thumbs up, saying “this one is for the planner and perfectionist who sweats the small stuff and wants to control everything, that’s me.”  I just knew if it spoke to her, it would speak to you too.

Discussed in this episode:

  • The limitations of planning and how they make us more resilient
  • Dealing with the emotions of disappointment, anxiety and frustration
  • Lessons from Buddhism about dealing with the unexpected
  • How to get through challenges by focusing on your values

Some of the traits and habits I have struggled with most and learned to overcome are procrastination and perfectionism.  Do you know which beliefs and habits are standing in your way?

I created a quiz with 6 common problems that interfere with our success as solopreneurs.

31 May 2022The $250K Business Breakthrough with Laura Khalil01:06:10

This is a conversation I have been looking forward to having for quite a while because my guest, Laura Khalil specializes in helping female consultants make $250K.

First off,   I was intensely curious, why $250K,  when the majority of business coaches and consultants are talking about helping their clients hit 6-figures or 7-figures?

I already knew that the skills and strategies that get you to 100k are not going to get you to 250k, but when you are not promoting group programs, courses, or having the leverage and scale convo, what else is there?

Well, this is where we are going in today’s super exciting conversation.  I am so rarely speechless, but it literally happened in this interview because of all I learned from Laura and can’t wait to share with you.

Laura pulls back the curtain on:

  • Why 88% of consultants top off at $113k, and what she does differently
  • The majority of consultants experience feast or famine cycles in business
  • Why most marketing is bullshit and what she teaches her clients instead
  • How she manages to work a lot fewer hours than her less well-paid peers
  • A different way to look at scaling your consulting business
  • The flat tire analogy that puts it all in perspective

Mic Drop Moment:

“The secret to earning $250K as a consultant is not a secret.  You need to become highly referable.” Laura Khalil

07 Jun 2022Maybe it's Not "Just" Procrastination00:36:30

If you are anything like me, you have a tendency to procrastinate. You procrastinate on the trivial, but also on things that are important to you and when you do, it can create a lot of seriously negative consequences.   You might even think of yourself as a “procrastinator” (something I do not recommend, and talk about why, in this episode.)

I believe that everyone procrastinates on some tasks, some of the time,  but it’s just too easy to dump all those times when you said you would do something and you aren’t doing on the procrastination pile.  But, what if it  isn’t “just” procrastination?  What if it’s resistance, avoidance, imposter complex, resentment, or even your intuition pointing you in a different direction?

Sometimes,  labeling our behavior as “just” procrastination doesn’t go deep enough to identify the real issue.  When this is the case, treating it as procrastination isn’t going to work, or worse, get you even deeper into something that isn’t right for you.  There are times when we need to push ourselves and “just do it” and other times we need a completely different approach.  In this solo episode, we explore the different scenarios that we might incorrectly label as “just procrastination” that really aren’t, what is actually going on, and what to do about it.

Discussed in this episode:

  • How to identify when it’s “just procrastination” and when it’s something more
  • The hidden emotion that pretends to be procrastination
  • Uncovering intuition in your business through Radical Self Acceptance
  • Why knowing your personal and business values leads to better decisions
  • What questions to ask yourself to to get unstuck and create confidence

I have struggled with procrastination for most of my life, even as a high achieving and highly educated individual, until I learned that what appears to be “just procrastination” isn’t always so.  Learning that what I was labeling 'just procrastination" when it was something else helped me solve the real problem.

If you are struggling with procrastination, maybe it’s because you are trying to do something that is not aligned with your values, which creates resistance.  The good news is you can get crystal clear on your top 5 values and use them to make better decisions in your business and life.

14 Jun 2022Launching a Coaching Business: A Client Success Story with Pam Peterson00:48:07

I just love inviting someone I have worked with to join me on the podcast for a Client Success Story episode.   As you will hear in the preview to this one,  I do not interview my clients during or immediately after we have completed my 12 week coaching program, when the bond is strong and they are flying high on how much we have accomplished together.

I wait a few months, because I am not interested in only helping my clients during the time they are actively working with me.  My goal is to set them up for the kind of success that lasts,  and that they can maintain on their own.

In this convo, you will meet my client Pam Peterson, who is a health and wellness coach, specializing in working with women with chronic pain in a mind-body-brain framework.  Pam has a masters degree, a bunch of certifications and has learned what actually works for chronic pain, because she has been living with it for years.

Pam and I talk about:

  • How much she accomplished during our three months together
  • The mindset shifts she made and sustained
  • The challenges she experienced and how we overcame them
  • Why I am not the easiest coach to work with, but just right for her
  • How she has been able to maintain her momentum after working with me

21 Jun 2022I Hate My Business. Now What?00:21:59

If you are a woman who has started her own business, I don’t have to tell you that you face quite a few challenges.  You have to know why you're in business, your goals and obstacles, and what's working and what isn't working.  You also need to know how to ask for the money, how much money to ask for, and how to feel good about asking for it.

In other words, even in the most simple, solopreneur business: coaching, consulting or professional services, you need to know your why, what you are trying to achieve, your advantages and disadvantages, and what aspects of your business are actually driving your success and which ones are inhibiting or delaying it.  Our relationship with money is the other elephant in the room, and a surprising number of women have trouble with establishing their prices, selling, and accepting payment.

With all these challenges, the majority of us dive head first into consuming content about business,  hoping it will make the daunting task of decision-making easier or more comfortable.   There is nothing wrong with seeking advice, consulting or coaching, but the risk of following others, either too many experts or over-reliance on a so-called “expert” is you may very well end up with a business you hate.

As hard as it is to admit, you would not be alone if you ever said or thought this.  In fact, there is a growing number of women who have hit the wall in their business and don’t know what to do.  Like everything else in life, it starts with self-awareness.

What you’ll learn in today’s episode:

  • Four wrong ways to start a business
  • The warning signs that your business isn’t right for you
  • Why you need a simple business plan
  • My thoughts about the word “expert” in the online world
  • There is hope, even if you hate your business, so don’t give up!

If you find yourself thinking “I hate my business”,  you don’t have to figure this out alone.  The first step is to figure out the habits and behaviors that are holding you back.  Take my quiz and you will find out your specific challenge but will receive feedback, guidance, and practical advice about steps you can take to fix it.

28 Jun 2022Embracing Creativity: A Client Success Story Episode With Lauren Hirsch00:46:00

I love working with creatives and today’s guest, my client Lauren Hirsch was one of my favorites.  Lauren decided to work with me after interviewing several other coaches and even having the first session with one of them.  She had just been diagnosed with ADHD and was struggling to find direction in her career,  create consistent habits, and feel more confident and intentional.

We worked together for 12 weeks in my 1:1 coaching program, from November - to February.  Literally the day after we finished our engagement, her boyfriend of several years, whom she was living with, broke off the relationship.  Lauren had to move out, find a new place to live, and was looking for a new job at the same time.  With this much disruption and change, Lauren was worried that all the positive changes in mindset and habits we had created together would be lost. I must admit I was a little worried about that, too.

What you will hear in this Client Success Story interview, which was recorded almost four months after we finished working together, is that did not happen. In fact, not only is Lauren thriving in her new job and apartment, but the work we did together is so evident in the way she sees herself, the way she makes decisions, and most of all, her identity as a creative.

Lauren learned that being a creative means she literally sees and experiences the world differently, so she really can’t look to others for acceptance and approval, without first giving it to herself.  She wanted help with career direction, self-confidence, creating more structure and routines in her life, and managing her impulsivity as a multi-passionate creative.  What she got was all that, and a whole lot more.

Lauren and I talk about:

  • Transforming perfectionism into self-trust
  • Tuning out her inner critic and listening to her intuition
  • Receiving constructive criticism from her boss as an opportunity
  • Embracing her identity as a creative who can make her living from her gifts

Mic Drop Moment:  “Creativity is an identity, not a behavior.” Lauren Hirsch

05 Jul 2022Attract Your Dream Clients: Building an Application Process for Success00:35:23

If you are a coach, consultant or other professional service providers, I don’t have to tell you how frustrating it is to be on a sales call with someone who is not a legitimate prospect and believe me, it feels bad for them too.   When you are just getting started, you may choose to work with almost anyone who is able and willing to hire you, but  once you are established, and find yourself in the enviable position of having a waiting list or being able to hand pick your clients, you need a system.

Having a screening or application process in place allows you to focus on identifying and serving only those clients that have the motivation, expectations, and resources to benefit from working with you, who will achieve amazing outcomes, and who will happily sing your praises, all of which helps keep your pipeline full.   We have all heard that you need to attract your ideal clients and repel everyone else, but how do you do this in a practical and efficient way?

One of the strategies I have developed in order to make sure I am getting in front of the right people, for the right reason at the right time is my consultation process and the language I use and the questions I ask of anyone scheduling a consultation with me.  I use Calendly, but you can apply the same process to Acuity, Schedule Once or any other online scheduler.

In this value-packed solo episode, I walk you through my exact system and how it benefits both me and the prospective client, even if we decide not to work together.

  • What to call it & why: consultation, interview, application, discovery call
  • How it creates value for your ideal client & deters those who will never hire you
  • The 5 questions you simply must ask (and what happens if you don’t)
  • Uncommon advice on your availability and appointment reminders

Also mentioned in this episode: Claudia Schalkx, marketing consultant  https://bridge2more.com/

If you find yourself thinking “I never thought about screening my prospects like this,” I’ve got a lot more expert guidance to share with you.  Being a solopreneur can be overwhelming and you don’t have to figure it out alone.

The first step is to identify which habits and behaviors are holding you back.  I created a quiz with 6 different behaviors I see in female solopreneurs.  Once you take the quiz, you will receive specific feedback, guidance, and practical advice about steps you can take to fix it.

So, that’s all for now, Driven Woman!  Please join us next week for an amazing guest interview on being confident on video with Helen Polise, The Tik Tok Teacher, and in the meantime, stay driven!

12 Jul 2022Becoming Confident on Video with Helen Polise00:49:39

Whether we are talking about YouTube, Instagram Reels, or TikTok, showing up online increasingly relies on being on video.  You can still reach people with your words via blogging, or your voice, via podcasting, but when you add video to the mix, you 10x the connection your audience feels with you, turbo-charging the process of converting casual observer into a devoted follower and potential client.

So, why aren’t all of us jumping on the video bandwagon?  The top three obstacles are technology, bandwidth, and confidence, and I am pretty damn sure that confidence (or lack of it) is the biggest hurdle.  Helen Polise is my inspiration and today’s guest on the podcast.  A successful producer of TV commercials for the past three decades, Helen knows her way around a camera and how to attract and engage an audience.  She took her pandemic pause and turned it into her new passion: teaching TikTok!

I also had a not-so-hidden agenda for this interview. If you listen all the way to the end,  you’ll see how and you’ll also see exactly why I can’t say enough about Helen Polise.

The Tik Tok Teacher's Tips for Video Confidence

  • find your passion
  • share your authentic self
  • put yourself out there consistently
  • embrace life fully, even the "bad stuff"
  • it's okay to make mistakes
  • remember to support your community

Mic Drop Moment:   “You will find YOUR friend group by being you.”

Don’t forget to join us next week for Episode #115 when I return with a solo episode called “What is Your Unfair Advantage?” Each of us has a superpower, your awesomesauce, a gift that can be leveraged to make our business stand out from the rest.  Do you know what yours is?  Join me next Tuesday, July 19th when it drops!

19 Jul 2022What's Your Unfair Advantage? How to Know and How to Use It00:31:40

In this value-packed solo episode,  I share my perspective on a word that is totally overutilized in the coaching industry: AUTHENTICITY;  and why I think what is being taught by many is actually manipulative AF and anything but authentic.  My definition of authenticity involves true vulnerability, courage, and risk-taking and is strategic, not tactical.

IMHO, authenticity is your unfair advantage, but there is more to it than that. What else can contribute to your unfair advantage?

  • Education, training, certifications
  • Experience and expertise, paid, volunteer and apprentice
  • Life lessons, personal development, and even post-traumatic growth
  • Gifts, talents, and obstacles you’ve overcome
  • Acknowledging forms of privilege

The more authentic I have become, the more I have been learning to unmask myself and share who I am, and the more I understand that I’m not the only one who feels like a square peg in a round hole,  who has paid a high price for conforming to the norm and is learning to excavate myself from under layers of cultural conditioning that began almost in the womb.

But, authenticity as your unfair advantage does not mean sharing everything with everybody indiscriminately, either.  What you share with the public, with your audience, and with your clients can, and probably should differ and authenticity never involves breaching trust or exposing information involving others when you have not requested consent.

Also mentioned in this episode:

If you find yourself thinking “I have no idea how to be authentic in my business” or “unfair advantage? Nope, I’m offering the same thing as everyone else”, it might be time to invest in the expert guidance of a business strategist and mindset coach.  Being a solopreneur can be overwhelming and you don’t have to figure it out alone.

So, that’s all for now, Driven Woman!  Please join us next week for an amazing guest interview with Belinda Sandor on why you ( yes you ) need a virtual assistant.  In the meantime, stay driven!

26 Jul 2022You Need a Virtual Assistant with Belinda Sandor00:34:05

Just because you work for yourself, doesn’t mean you need to work by yourself.  Hiring a virtual assistant can be one of the best investments in your solopreneur business because you simply can’t do everything on your own as efficiently and profitably as you can with the right kind of help.  I can say without reservation that hiring a VA changed my business and I should have done it sooner.

Today’s guest, Belinda Sandor,  is a business workflow and productivity expert with 25 years of experience, and the founder of RocketGirl Solutions. After years of being hired by small businesses on a contract basis to act as their part-time “business manager,” she turned her experience into founding The VA Connection, a professional online community with the goal of educating and connecting independent virtual assistants around the world.

Belinda is also a sought-after speaker and has been quoted in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Reader’s Digest, and other national and local media. Our conversation today is about how to partner with your VA so that they can accelerate your business growth and profit.

Want to connect with Belinda Sandor?  Let me count the ways!

A virtual assistant can be a tremendous asset in your business, but just having one isn’t going to solve every problem, especially if those challenges are related to your business mindset.  Mindset tends to be overlooked by many solopreneurs who don’t really understand why they are stuck at a certain level of business growth or income.  I created this quiz to help you figure out the underlying reason you feel stuck.

Take the quiz and get your personalized result, as well as the first steps for what to do about it!    What’s Holding You Back?    https://bit.ly/obstaclesquiz

02 Aug 2022Getting Better at Hearing "No"00:41:55

If you have been a regular listener, you know that I am obsessed with helping female solopreneurs gain confidence and courage so they can pursue and achieve their goals and dreams.  One of the most common scenarios I encounter with my business strategy and coaching clients the fear of hearing the word “no.  I have been interviewed on the topic of entrepreneurship and rejection sensitivity on several other podcasts, so I know this is a pretty widespread struggle.

There are a number of ways we unconsciously resist hearing no that actually limit our income, profit, and success in business.  Behaviors such as never raising our prices, asking a team member to learn something new, and avoiding creating new offers are a few.   Many of us go so far out of our way to avoid being rejected that we basically reject the chance of being found, hired, and paid.  Or, we just don’t ask for the sale, avoid using a Call to Action in our marketing, and “forget” to follow up with prospects.

With everything I am learning about confidence, failure, and resiliency, I have come to the conclusion that getting better at dealing with “no” is a skill that all of us need to get better at.  Think of it this way: we either need to learn how to deal more effectively with “no” or get used to settling for less than we truly want.

The main issue is what we make it mean when we hear no, especially for those who are shy, introverted, highly creative, socially anxious, and who experience rejection sensitivity, but the good news is that getting better at hearing no is a skill that anyone can learn.  I share several strategies that have been helpful to my clients and also to myself, including one I adapted from my experiences as a psychotherapist, including:

  • Upping the ante on your “no”
  • Role-playing with your biz bestie
  • Questioning the “no”
  • Asking for things you don’t really want/need

So many of my clients knew they were struggling and suspected they were holding themselves back in their business when they hired me, and one of the first things we did was to assess their mindset and habits.  If you don’t know what isn’t working, you won’t know what to change, right?

I created a quiz with 6 different behaviors I often see in female solopreneurs that limit their income, profit, and success.  Once you take the quiz, you will receive specific feedback, guidance, and practical advice about your particular challenge and more importantly, steps you can take to fix it.

So, that’s all for now, Driven Woman!  Please join us next week for an amazing guest interview with Nicole Lewis Keeber, my first-ever repeat guest. Nicole and I will be talking about what entrepreneurs need to know about trauma and why it seems like everyone on the internet is suddenly claiming to be a trauma specialist.  In the meantime,...

09 Aug 2022What Does Trauma Have to Do with Your Business? with Nicole Lewis-Keeber00:48:19

I am pretty sure I am not the only one who has noticed the dramatic increase in the number of coaches who refer to themselves as ‘trauma-focused”, ‘trauma-aware” or “trauma-conscious.”  There is no question that there is a tremendous need. Half of all women have experienced trauma at some time in their lives and there is a significant percentage of traumatized people who become entrepreneurs.

Because I work with female entrepreneurs, I wanted to address this issue on the podcast, and talk with someone who is a legitimate expert on the intersection of trauma and entrepreneurship, so I invited Nicole Lewis-Keeber back as my first return guest.

Nicole has spent years studying, training, and developing her expertise in this area as a licensed psychotherapist, coach, facilitator, speaker, trainer, and published author. She created her signature program “Do No Harm” because simply having a personal history of trauma and the desire to help others does not qualify anyone as “trauma-conscious.”

This convo may be triggering to some, but I hope will listen all the way to the end of the episode.  This subject is far too important to not address, even if it might ruffle some feathers.

Nicole and I discuss:

  • The definition of trauma
  • Why trauma has become trendy
  • What Nicole noticed in biographies about both Will Smith & Prince
  • Therapy, coaching, trauma & entrepreneurship

Also mentioned in this interview:

  • ACES Scale  https://bit.ly/3Qw6Vi9
  • Bruce Perry's book: What Happened to You?

Mic Drop Moments:

“What works for you works for you.”  (not necessarily someone else…)

16 Aug 2022Right-Size Your Business to Fit Your Life00:48:00

If you are like most of us, you jumped into your online business with nothing more than the intense desire to BYOB ( Be Your Own Boss, that is…) and put your faith in the celebrity coaches and online gurus to show you the way.  Now you are a few years into it, working too many hours,  making too little money, and feeling super stressed about how to get anything else done in the rest of your life.

It’s time to do a reality check, climb out from under our sunk cost and shame and forgive ourselves, so we can get busy right-sizing our business. None of those gurus is living your life, paying your bills, or coping with your problems so you are the expert on how your business should actually look and how to make it fit your life, instead of taking over your life.  You can right-size your business, no matter how long you have been in it, by asking yourself some important questions and making the changes that align with your honest answers.

Things to Consider to Right-Size Your Business:

  • How many hours a week can you devote to your business?
  • How soon do you need revenue & profit to keep your boat afloat?
  • What are your financial needs and cash flow comfort zone?
  • What is your end game for this business?
  • What level of intimacy & contact do you want with your clients?
  • How much time (or money) can you devote to marketing?
  • What is your capacity to sustain all this without burning out (energy, bandwidth)?

There is no one “right-size” business for everybody because each of us has a different life, responsibilities, challenges, and priorities.  Your business can change as your stage of life and opportunities change, so don’t shoehorn yourself into anyone else’s version of a dream business.  You don’t “have to” do anything unless it’s right and sustainable for you.

Did you recognize yourself in any of the ways I talked about in this episode? So many of my clients knew they were struggling and suspected they were holding themselves back in their business when they hired me, and one of the first things we did was to assess their mindset and habits.  If you don’t know what isn’t working, you won’t know what to change, right?

So, that’s all for now, Driven Woman!  Please join us next week for another amazing Client Success Story episode with Meredith Ferguson, a brilliant website designer.  Meredith and I will be talking about marketing your genius and how to launch your creative business even

23 Aug 2022Marketing Your Genius: A Client Success Story with Meredith Ferguson00:46:09

I love helping female solopreneurs find their genius, so they can create a satisfying and sustainable business doing what they do best. Today’s guest is client Meredith Ferguson, who decided to work with me because she had two fledging businesses and neither of them was profitable.  She had a lot of natural talent but no systems and no boundaries.  She wanted a legitimate business but was literally giving her work away and because she wasn’t taking herself seriously as a business owner, no one else did either.

We worked together for several months in my 1:1 coaching program, and one of the first things we did was to set her Pilates business on auto-pilot so she would focus on her website design business.  Then, it was time to get busy creating boundaries, eliminating bartering, and being a beck-and-call-girl for everyone who needed help with their website but wasn’t paying for it.  Getting rid of the “freeples” (people who want what you’ve got and expect to get it for nothing) and learning to value her time and skill were some of Meredith’s biggest Boss Up moves during our work together.

Highlights of this convo:

  • Dealing with imposter syndrome because you don’t have “credentials”
  • Discovering her superpower and seeing its value in the eyes of others
  • Owning up to her part in being taken advantage of by others
  • Networking to market your services when you have social anxiety
  • Giving yourself grace when things interrupt your business momentum

Mic Drop Moment:  “I always heard that you teach people how to treat you but I didn’t get it until now.  If you don’t communicate your boundaries, you can’t expect people to know what they are.”  Meredith Ferguson

30 Aug 2022The Cure for Imposter Syndrome00:26:23

Human beings have a need to understand themselves and others.  We label behavior and decide what is normal and what is not.  Our culture is particularly fond of pathologizing behavior and especially the behavior of women.  The way we speak to and about ourselves matters a lot.  We have all literally learned to think of ourselves in a certain way from an early age and it is a lot harder to change those beliefs than it is to question them before they stick.

We have all used labels to refer to ourselves and others in ways that are harmful, inaccurate, and lasting.  Referring to ourselves as having imposter syndrome may be spot on, or not.  When we lack the confidence to start a business, ask to be paid for our services, are afraid to raise our rates, set boundaries with clients, or hold our team members to a higher standard, is it imposter syndrome, or could it be something else?

Just because you don’t feel comfortable introducing yourself as a business owner at a virtual mixer, doesn’t mean imposter syndrome is the reason. Your challenges may be a mindset issue, but they might just as well be an issue of experience or skill. I unpack the cure for imposter syndrome by helping you figure out that imposter syndrome is not what is going on with you, so you can do something about what is.

Imposter syndrome is the description of a very specific kind of problem that occurs among high-achieving women who attribute their accomplishments to luck rather than to competency, effort, and determination.  It should not be used as a ‘catchall” phrase for every time any of us is scared, unprepared, or avoids anything uncomfortable in business.  Sometimes we need to do something different not just think something different.

Resource mentioned in this episode: My buddy, non-sleazy sales specialist, Annie P Ruggles

I warned you.  She is brilliant.  You might just fall in love with sales because of Annie.  And you will definitely fall in love with Annie!

So, maybe you figured out you really don’t have Imposter Syndrome. Hooray! But wait, you still aren’t crushing your goals. No worries.

06 Sep 2022The Power of Purpose: Leading with Your Values00:40:56

I recently connected with today’s guest through our common belief that high-achieving women are most fulfilled when they are working in alignment with their core values, setting boundaries that honor them, and mentoring other women to do the same. Laura has a Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology and is a college professor, author, podcaster, advocate, and coach.  She is also a wife and mom to two young sons.

Laura’s company, The Catch Group,  was founded on the principle of living a life guided by your values. They believe that leaders should bring their authentic leadership to the workplace to build inclusive teams and that leaders should be able to have big career goals AND career fulfillment. Laura believes that top leadership at companies should be diverse and that women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ leaders need to hold more top jobs at companies.

We hold very similar beliefs on women and ambition,  values, boundaries, resilience, organizational dynamics, workplace culture, diversity, and change.

Here is what you’ll learn in today’s episode:

  • Laura’s 3 Step Values First Framework
  • Tie the goal to one or more of your values
  • Set up a system so it becomes repeatable
  • Celebrate consistency
  • Laura’s personal and professional values and how they show up in her company
  • Jet setting and boundary setting (think introverts at a conference)
  • Red flags and traps when experiencing conflict at work
  • Why she named her business The Catch Group and why women in leadership need their catch crew

13 Sep 2022Stronger Leadership for Business Growth: Is It Time to Boss Up?00:43:51

Have you ever heard the term “boss up?”  I started using it with my one-to-one coaching clients about a year ago, at times when they needed and wanted to change their mindset and take new actions.  Usually, this happened because they had plateaued, believed they were stagnating, or just felt stuck and were ready to do whatever it took to move beyond it.

I had been trying to decide on a name for the signature framework I spent months creating (with the help of a consultant I’ve mentioned on this podcast, Claudia Schalkx.)  I looked up the term “boss up” and recognized instantly that it was the perfect name for my framework.  Here’s the Urban Dictionary definition of boss up:  “take ownership of one's life, by directing the full capacity of time, resources, and attention toward a specific direction, goal, or intent. In other words: step up, raise your standard, up your game, and take responsibility for the direction of your life and the full maturity of your dreams.”

Just substitute business for life and you will see what this program is all about. We opened the doors for sign-ups for the very first cohort of Boss Up Breakthrough yesterday and I wanted to let you know who it’s for, how to know if you are ready, and invite you to join us.

How we set ourselves up for problems in business:

  • Thinking of yourself as a visionary in need of an implementor
  • Business partnerships that are not real partnerships
  • Letting our clients determine our offers, becoming a “beck & call girl”
  • The risk of becoming a “Silly Putty Person” by following the herd
  • Starting a business to avoid having a boss vs wanting to be the boss
  • Focusing on passion & purpose, while forgetting about profit

When it is time to get help to boss up:

  • We have no clue what’s actually working and what isn’t
  • We bought into the 6 or 7-figure propaganda instead of right-sizing our biz
  • Our boundaries are lacking, weak, or not being honored
  • Our values are in conflict with our business model
  • We prioritize avoiding discomfort & end up not geting what we want/need

20 Sep 2022Negotiation Skills for Solopreneurs: Overcome Fear and Get Paid What You Deserve00:49:32

I recently connected with leadership coach and consultant, Joanne Zuk, and liked her immediately.  We both came to solopreneurship after long and successful careers in another sector.  Joanne was in public service and I worked in nonprofits. In her current role, Joanne is on a mission to help female solopreneurs overcome their fears of negotiation so they can go after and get what they deserve and desire.

Joanne is a leadership coach and consultant, a women's negotiation advisor, course creator, and speaker who helps women around the world ditch their discomfort around negotiation, and leverage strategies that actually work for women.

In this lively convo, we talk about the 5 blindspots that cause women to settle for less than they want in negotiations, and how to get comfortable going from the minimum level to the dignified level to the generous level.  We talk about feminine conditioning, why negotiating like a man just won’t work for most women, and how we can use empathy to create better outcomes for both sides, instead of allowing empathy to be used against us.

27 Sep 2022Lessons From a Failed Launch00:37:08

Why am I pulling back the curtain on my own failed launch (while marketing myself as a business strategist, coach, and consultant?)   And, why do it immediately after it happened?  I must admit I had a lot of reservations about both the content and the timing, but one of my core values is integrity and for me, that means telling the whole truth about solopreneurship, the cringe-worthy as well as the brag-worthy. I also knew if I didn’t share it now, I would miss the true value of sharing our failures- giving shame the middle finger.

If you are a solopreneur, you have to become comfortable with risk and failure. You need to try things without knowing how they will turn out, ask people to hire you even if you have imposter issues, make offers before you feel ready to do so and some of your programs, products, and services will fail.  You are literally where the buck starts and stops, so getting better at dealing with failure is truly unavoidable.

In this, my most vulnerable episode so far, I share the reasons that the recent launch of my new small group coaching program failed, what I learned from the experience, and what I am going to do next, because in business, as in theater, the show must go on!

Highlights of this episode:

  • How to manage our expectations
  • Using your core values as a filter for decision making
  • Toxic productivity & trauma patterns in business
  • Letting yourself down vs letting others down
  • Pushing through or pulling back - is it self-sabotage or self-care?
  • My experience in a coaching program where the leader modeled “no failure”
  • Is it even a failure if you pull the plug?
  • Are launches right for you and your business?
  • Taking control of our relationship with failure and what we make it mean

04 Oct 2022Creating Confidence Through Personal Styling with Scarlett De Bease00:45:15

Today’s guest, Scarlett De Bease is a personal wardrobe stylist who shows female entrepreneurs what clothes to wear so they'll make more money and attract better clients. She guides her clients to create their own unique signature style, feel fearless and confident about being seen and heard, and excited to put themselves out to the world in a way that is game-changing.

As the founder of Scarlett Image Consulting and author of “Stop Stressing About Dressing,” her one-of-a-kind in-person and worldwide online workshops reveal how a more powerful presence leads to more opportunities and more profit for solopreneurs and business owners.

Scarlett and I are both members of a couple of different groups for female solopreneurs and even before I got to know her, she always stood out in a positive way through personal branding and image styling.  We recently participated in a marketing boot camp together, and I got to know her mindset and perspective.  For example, she is a personal stylist and image consultant who is adamant that she is “not a fashionista.”

 We talk about:

  • Having a closet full of clothes and “nothing to wear”
  • How she was raised to embrace being different
  • Creating a wardrobe for the body and lifestyle you have now
  • Dressing for success, reimagined

You can find out more about Scarlett at ScarlettImage.com.

It’s Q4 - Is your business on track to finish 2022 strong and maintain that momentum right into the new year?

11 Oct 2022Are You Quiet Quitting in Your Business?00:32:39

The world of work has experienced some pretty seismic changes in the past couple of years, leading up to three interrelated trends: the great resignation, the rise of solopreneurship, and quiet quitting.  Productivity and employee engagement are down, way down and companies of all sizes can’t fill open positions or get the best out of the employees they have now.

I first heard about quiet quitting on TikTok, and it really made me think about my own work history,  and the challenges being faced by the five different generations that currently make up the workforce. If you are not familiar with the term, quiet quitting refers to doing only what is necessary at work, something my generation called “coasting.”

A quiet quitter is not necessarily on their way out the door, but they are maintaining firm boundaries around their work hours and effort in order to maintain a better work-life balance.  No after-hours checking of emails, no attending the company picnic, and no “going above and beyond” to gain favor from the higher-ups.

What I find interesting in quiet quitting is the intention, not the behavior, because it can very easily be misconstrued.  So is quiet quitting passive-aggressive, a precursor or sign of burnout, or an exit strategy, and what can we as solopreneurs learn from it?

Highlights of this episode:

  • Changes in the work culture due to the pandemic
  • How different generations view and respond to work expectations
  • Quiet quitting and hustle culture
  • Corporate culture, outliers, and superstars
  • The what, when, and why of quiet quitting for solopreneurs

So, that’s all for now, Driven Woman!  Please join us next week for another amazing guest interview with Meera Kothand, 3-time bestselling author, and digital marketing expert who is going to teach us how to create the emails our subscribers want to open (and we want to write!)

18 Oct 2022Writing Emails They'll Want to Open with Meera Kothand00:49:39

One of the complaints I hear most often from other female solopreneurs is that they find it close to impossible to write high-quality emails to their list, but not everyone is in a position to hire a copywriter to take that task off their hands.

There are so many different kinds of emails that a business owner may need to send at different times from onboarding sequences to nurturing sequences, sales emails,  and even invitations to unsubscribe when people have not been opening them for a while, that even those who are pretty confident about their writing skills, like me, can get pretty lost in the weeds.

Today’s guest, Meera Kothand began her online business journey as a blogger and began writing books for other bloggers, several of which became Amazon best sellers.  She now focuses on helping digital marketers write emails that convert subscribers to customers in a way that is both strategic and sustainable by making them more simple and fun, which was music to my ears.

Even though I have purchased several of her books over the past few years,  there were a couple of moments during this interview where some really critical strategies finally made complete sense to me.

It was a really good reminder to be compassionate with myself about how long it really takes to learn to be successful as a solopreneur because of all the different skills we juggle on a daily basis with or without a team.  I am making some changes in my emails as a result of this convo and you might find yourself motivated enough to get back on track with your email marketing too.

Learn more about Meera:

Maybe the only thing holding you back is that you’re not writing emails that convert. If that’s the case, Meera has your back.  But, what if you don’t know why you are working so hard to get ahead in your business and just can’t seem to reach those higher-level goals?  Take my quiz and find out!

19 May 2020The Truth About Hustle Culture: Building Grit Without Burning Out00:10:29

If you have an interest-based brain,  the fact that a task, project, or goal is important isn’t always enough to get yourself to do what needs to be done, especially if it happens to be important to someone else, but not to you.  This leads to all kinds of resistance, procrastination, and outright avoidance and this is one of the aspects of being an adult with ADHD that is the most frustrating.  But, what if you understood that your brain works differently and important is not the driver that gets you going?

In this episode,  Diann shares her concept of the Four ADHD Drivers, which she playfully refers to as Fancy, Gritty, Shiny, and Fomo and why you need to figure out how to make the task at hand more like one of them in order to get yourself to take action.   Hey, we don’t always get to do only the things that we are really interested in, but it’s no surprise that those who are able to create a life based on their interests are able to leverage their ADHD gifts in the most powerful way.  Think Michelle Rodriguez (acclaimed actress), Simone Biles (Olympic gymnast) and Lisa Ling (award-winning journalist) who have created highly successful careers around their interests, because of, not in spite of their ADHD.

19 May 2020Imposter Complex00:12:21

One of the things that is the most frustrating to a woman with ADHD is that she usually can’t produce her brilliance on demand.  Try as she might, her creative, innovative, intuitive, out of the box abilities aren’t available to her at all times, like an ATM machine she can always make a withdrawal from.  Sometimes she appears to be an absolute genius at work at life, and other times she feels like a hot mess loser. This can result in a pretty nasty case of Imposter Complex, which is not an actual psychological disorder, but a pretty common cause that holds many bold, brilliant, badass women back from achieving their full potential.

In this episode, Diann talks about Imposter Complex and why women with ADHD are particularly prone to experiencing it. Imposter Complex is the term used to explain why gifted women tend to dismiss their success as being the result of luck, being in the right place at the right time, or even diversity policies, rather than grit, determination, and brilliance.  We might believe that we are being held back by others, but we often accept less than we want and deserve because of our own self-doubts and insecurities.

Diann also refers to the importance of living in your Zone of Genius, another important concept from the popular book, The Big Leap by author Gay Hendricks and how doing so is one of the most significant changes we can make to start creating an ADHD friendly business and lifestyle.

26 May 2020Your Brain is Not Your Friend00:10:14

In this episode, Diann talks about how most people think that their brain works on their behalf, helping them to achieve their personal happiness, but little do people know the hard truth that it really doesn’t operate this way, but rather the other way around.

It is true that our brain can be likened to a computer with regard to how it operates, but unlike a computer, our brain never gets an upgrade, updates, or even extra storage so thoughts we adopted as children continue to drive our thinking in spite of years of life experience.

The brain is focused on the prime directive of your survival instead of your continued growth and learning,.  As a result, the brain is resistant to change, that is why it takes much of a person’s will and effort to change the way we think.  The good news is that you can do something about it and that’s what we’ll discuss in this episode.
