Before today's episode, we thought that chapter 30, "Grawp" was a bit of a throwaway chapter. Not anymore. As we delve into this chapter through the lens of politics, specifically the politics of the colonial mindset and forced displacement, we notice that there are many nuances within the chapter that are illustrative of how the wizarding world operates in relation to other magical creatures. This week’s episode is all about language. Erin and Adri discuss the politics of language prejudice in chapter 11 “The Dueling Club” of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling. Harry is a victim of gossip, Adri feels called out because she loves gossip, and Erin makes some great points about how we think about language. We're baaaaack! And we missed you! So, so much. In this episode we tackle the topic of servitude and ponder why Wormtail doesn't strike out on his own instead of nursing a misshapen Voldemort via snake milk. Do snakes even produce milk? Also, can someone's loyalty in servitude lay with a place and not a family? So much to unpack. Gryffinclaw extraordinaire Adrienne White, host of the She’s So Cool Podcast, joins me to talk about Pottermore, Minerva McGonagall, reading the series as an adult, and the Politics of Humiliation. Humiliation made me think about that early 2000s MTV show The Pickup Artist and negging. Adrienne focuses on Draco’s humiliation tactics, while I zero in on Ron’s glee at seeing Malfoy turned into a ferret (and how there’s a whole issue of power around who does the transfiguration). Ben Hogan, fellow Gryffindor and one of the hosts of The Podcast that Must Not Be Named (twitter.com/notnamedpodcast), joins me to talk about the politics of Tragedy in chapter 14 of GoF. For instance, Professor Moody (well, Barty Crouch Jr. if we're being precise) seems to be using trauma/tragedy to get the students' attention and loyalty. Harry and Neville's lives are tainted by tragedy concerning their respective parents, but their realities are starkly different, as we see in this chapter and in the series as a whole. What would the series look like if Neville was the protagonist? And, why is Harry sympathetic rather than empathetic when someone is in need? We also talk about the characteristics Rowling embeds in her characters, and how she breaks the mold with her depiction of male and female traits in our golden trio. Find the podcast:

06 Nov 2023 | Growing Up Millennial: Season 1 - The Olsen Twins' Dualstar Entertainment Empire | 00:01:43
Season one of Growing Up Millennial holds a really special place in our hearts: the direct-to-video (that's VHS to you, dear listeners) movies made by the Olsen Twins in the '90s and early aughts. These films were a staple of our combined childhood (even with our seven-year age difference), and Adri and Helene are here to dissect, discuss, and reminisce about all of them. We go through the plot, the fashion, the feminism, and we even give a voice to the voiceless in podcasting, the straight white cis dude. Even though we want to say that Our Lips Are Sealed to surprise our audience with which movies we’re going to cover throughout these eight episodes, we can safely say that you’ll get a full list pretty soon. Some may even say that you’ll see it in a New York Minute. What to expect from our first episode: We hope you have your virtual passports, pretend airline tickets, and spiritual cross-body backpacks at the ready, because we’re headed to Paris! What could be more iconic (or should we say iconique?) than to begin our Dualstar journey with the 1999 classic, Passport to Paris? Nothing, that’s what. I mean, this movie had FASHION (yes, the usage of all caps was a necessary choice) and a romance for the ages (I’m looking at you J-Man & Brigitte). Pass us a note in class. Seth's back and he's not afraid to make reaching conclusions, folks! My non-Harry Potter reading husband joins me to talk about the Politics of Determination in Chapter 20 of Goblet of Fire and how the hero's journey is about fate. We also talk about the Ministry of Magic as a political entity that is thrust upon wizards, how being a wizard is not an act of choice, Hermione and Ron's heavy lifting (Ron does some emotional labor, Hermione does all the book work), and we sort the Brooklynn 99 characters into Hogwarts Houses (because, why not?). In this chapter, Ron can’t find a way to break up with Lavender, Harry is still trying to figure out what Draco is all about, and Hermione keeps reminding Harry that his priorities are all out of whack. With this in mind, we talk about the politics of surveillance and priorities, including a discussion on if a certain plot point of the chapter could have given us some clues as to the author’s TERF beliefs before she was vocal about them. 10 May 2023 | 731: The Battle of Hogwarts (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Chapter 31) | 01:25:22
This is the one where Voldemort gives everyone at Hogwarts the choice to deliver Harry to him before midnight otherwise the Death Eaters will attack the school. Only Pansy Parkinson seems to think this is a good idea so everyone braces to fight while Harry still struggles to determine where to find Ravenclaw’s Diadem. With Ron and Hermione nowhere to be found, he tracks down the hiding place but runs into a number of old friends on the way who have joined to help fight. Harry reunites with Ron and Hermione and they head toward the Room of Requirement where they are confronted by Draco, Crabbe, and Goyle. Crabbe casts a Fiendfyre curse and the room goes up in flames but Harry decides to save Draco and Goyle before they escape with the Diadem. 20 Dec 2021 | BONUS/RECAST: A Calendar Can be Political (+ Patreon Exclusive) | 02:16:05
Happy Holidays! With the Christmas holiday upon us, we thought we should re-release our conversation about what it's like to be a Jewish person living in a majority Christian world with special guest Shoshana, who gives us glimpses of being Jewish in the UK, and with our own Helene, who gives us glimpses of growing up Jewish in the U.S. While these are just two accounts of women living in cultures that have embraced Christianity as a default (think about calendars, holidays, food (kosher vs not), depictions of Judaism in the media, etc.). For the first time in our main feed, we are also releasing our Patreon Exclusive for this episode: On this latest Girl Who Lived segment, we tackle how it would look like if Umbridge had been written as a man. Would this male Umbridge be hyper-masculine? Would we find his actions more or less reprehensible? Is your hosts' absolute hatred for female Umbridge based on internalized misogyny?

01 Nov 2021 | 614: Felix Felicis (Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, Chapter 14) | 01:09:06
This week, we talk about Hermione’s reaction to seeing Ron couple up with someone else, how Harry fake roofies Ron’s pumpkin juice to dramatic effect, and Harry’s realization that he feels more than brotherly love for one Ginny Weasley. This leads us to talk about the politics of Jealousy and Communication.
The question of the week is: Was Hermione justified in sending the birds to attack Ron? Why or why not?

19 Feb 2018 | 212: The Politics of Impersonation (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Chapter 12) | 00:38:05
We’re back! On this episode, we talk about the myriad ways impersonation both benefits and hurts the trio (and how there are no perfect victims) in chapter 12 “The Polyjuice Potion” of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling. Adri and Erin discuss the politics of youth and agency in Chapter 4, “The Leaky Cauldron” of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling. We discuss agency and how Harry and the trio are allowed to engage with the wizarding world on their own terms, sometimes to disastrous consequences. 27 Apr 2023 | 729: Members Only (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Chapter 29) | 01:10:34
This is the one where the trio follow Neville through the passageway back to Hogwarts and they are regaled with harrowing stories about what has become of the school since their absence. They are told of students being tortured as the fascist regime of Death Eaters gain power over Hogwarts. Once they arrive in the Room of Requirement, they are met with a large group of former Dumbledore’s Army members who are excited to see them and fight back against the evil forces at play. Much to Harry’s dismay, even more of his friends show up expecting to be let in on their plans to defeat Voldemort. After some convincing from Ron and Hermione, Harry finally allows them to try and help and they lead him to the Lost Diadem of Ravenclaw which he thinks might be another Horcrux. Harry and Luna sneak into the Ravenclaw common room to see what it looks like and are ultimately caught by the Carrows (who are definitely not in the movie adaptation).

24 Sep 2018 | 319: The Politics of Innocence and Imprisonment (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Chapter 19) | 01:03:03
What correlations can we make between the prison industrial complex and Azkaban? Who gets sentenced to serve in prison in our world vs who gets to skate by in the Wizarding World? We talk about technological advancements in determining innocence and guilt, and how those are infallible (much like magic, in this case). This makes us think about touch DNA and how it has been found to be slightly misrepresented in our CSI-heavy interpretation of police work: https://www.forbes.com/sites/marinamedvin/2018/09/20/framed-by-your-own-cells-how-dna-evidence-imprisons-the-innocent/#1c4960714b86 Find us online:

20 Feb 2021 | 523: Even Dementors like Cancun (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 23) | 00:58:12
Texas is under snow and without power, Texas Senator and noted Insurrectionist Ted Cruz flees to Cancun to then throw his daughters under the bus when it becomes a media PHENOMENON (your honor, my daughters made me do it, I swear! Women lead us men astray, let's focus on them and how to hold them accountable), and we cover chapter 23 of Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix. We can empathize with the way Harry is feeling and applaud him for being able to shift his perspective once his friends point out that he is likely not being possessed by Voldemort. Now that's growth that a lot of us can't do because we refuse to change the fundamental ways in which we see ourselves and structure our understanding of the world. 16 Jun 2020 | Screaming into the Void: 2020 Hellscape Edition | 02:31:12
Adri and Helene scream into the void once again (for two and a half hours), thanks to JK Rowling's twitter and recent/current events shaping the dystopic YA novel no one asked for and that we're currently inhabiting (seriously, at least most of those had a juicy love triangle, can someone tell me that they've been embroiled in a juicy love triangle during this time? Because if so, please dm me. I love gossip. Find me on twitter @ananabanana). In this non-traditional episode of our little podcast, we talk about: 1. Judgemental Karen Rowling's Transphobia, why the arguments in her essay hold no merit, responses to her statement, the danger of her transphobic views, and we answer some questions we got on twitter. 2. Defund the Police - what that means, and spoiler alert, it's not what your Fox News aunts and uncles think it means. This also includes a discussion on the importance of Black Lives Matter and how social structures further discourage equity in our communities. 3. Media we've been consuming in this hellscape of a year. Check out our website www.acciopolitics.com for a list of resources on Black Lives Matter.

Harry goes on a very awkward date with Cho in this chapter, and Helene and Adri get into the politics of suspicion and scapegoating. 19 Dec 2020 | 516: Grassroots Movements in the Wizarding World (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 16) | 01:20:20
In this episode, Helene and Adri land on the same politic for the first time since the show format started leaving the politics of the chapter open! Before they discussed chapter 16 of OotP, "In the Hog's Head," they talked about the news of the week, which included presidential pardons and the last days of the Trump presidency. Skipping the Hogwarts Debate club shenanigans altogether, they talked about what actually makes a grassroots movement successful, wondering if the Death Eaters could be considered a grassroots movement. 21 Nov 2020 | 514.5: The One Where We Talk to Chris Rankin | 01:51:29
Today’s episode isn’t about a chapter, but a character (and some other topics of interest). Actor/Director/Producer Chris Rankin, who embodied the character of Percy Weasley in the film adaptation of the Harry Potter series, graciously joined us 19 years after the filming of Sorcerer’s Stone. We get to the nitty-gritty of how Chris got into the Harry Potter series before being cast, Percy’s potential internal motivations, whether Chris ever read fanfics, how he’d like Percy’s life after the Battle of Hogwarts to look like, what Chris thinks Percy’s career ambitions were, and current politics (of course). Patrons get exclusive interview content with Chris, including whether he has a favorite non-canon ship, what it was like having his mom teach at his high school, and whether he is his own favorite Chris, in addition to an after-interview debrief between your hosts. 03 Oct 2020 | 508 - Dumbledore's Aspirational Pettiness (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 8) | 01:37:46
It is a truth universally acknowledged that all our hosts aspire to levels of petty displayed by one Albus Dumbledore in this chapter of OoTP. As Harry faces trial by the Wizengamot led by one very insecure Minister of Magic who just wants people to let him have power in peace even as the Wizarding World is shifting due to Voldy's return, Professor Dumbledore sweeps in and gives the Minister of Magic a master class on shade and how to manipulate the law to suit his needs. We're back with the first episode we recorded after the new year started, and 2021 is certainly not pulling any punches in the political arena. With just the first week of 2021 under our belt, we've seen an attempted coup, this time by force (riots led by white supremacist groups, the proud boys, and Q conspiracy theorists at the Capitol incited by the lame-duck president). In this episode, we cover the politics of teach-ins, silence & knowledge, and coalition when it comes to Harry and his fellow Hogwarts students to build what becomes Dumbledore's Army during this chapter. Patrons get access to our discussion on what would it look like if the character of Luna was gender-flipped in the series, and what the series would look like if the gender-flipping also extended to her father. 27 Apr 2023 | 730: Politics of Mobilization and Guardianship (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Chapter 30) | 00:55:24
This is the one where, after alerting Voldemort to Harry’s presence, Luna stuns Alecto Carrow only for her brother Amycus to show up along with McGonagall. Harry ends up casting the Cruciatus curse on Amycus after he spits in McGonagall’s face, and after subduing them both Harry gets the chance to tell McGonagall what’s going on. She has a run-in with Snape which ends with him jumping out of the window to escape, and then she rounds up the rest of the heads of Houses to protect the school and get everyone to safety. Harry returns to the Room of Requirement to see that the Order has shown up to help fight. Everyone starts heading to the Great Hall to prepare for battle but Harry and the Weasley family stay behind. While Ginny is fighting with her family to stay and fight, Percy shows up and apologizes for everything he’s done. They reconcile and just as they’re about to join the rest of the school, Harry sees that Voldemort has finally arrived at Hogwarts.

25 Oct 2021 | 613: There’s More to Magic than Skill (Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, Chapter 13) | 00:51:01
Is who we are determined by our genes (nature) or our upbringing and culture (nurture)? This is one of the questions that we ask ourselves in this episode of this podcast, especially when it comes to the differences between Harry and Voldemort. We also talk about how knowledge can be used as a form of currency; this can be seen in social gains and even monetary ones. We also consider a bombshell that Dumbledore lets drop on Harry’s education: the fact that the ability to do magic can be determined by someone’s mental and/or emotional state. This gets us thinking about how Harry and Neville don’t thrive in subjects where they feel particularly vulnerable or nervous. Furthermore, how does this interact with our lived experiences? We think about the times where our abilities may have been dimmed by emotions or any mental blocks. The question of the week is: Do you think Voldemort is a product of his nature or his nurture? Why?
