This is the check a pro radio show check a pro Joe has assembled a team of pre-qualified home service contractors to bring you the latest in services products and techniques now here's your host the man with a hard hat and tool belt checkup row Joe Tommy Mellow how are you doing my friend doing great got done working out with the trainer so things are good! Hey I get a lot of questions from people being in home service from my point of view a lot of questions come up and the question of the day is when people buy a home whether it's new or an existing home you know they have a garage door already in there what is that garage door who's made that garage door who's got the warranty on that garage door in most cases is a regular house not a custom home but a regular home is that a good door or is that considered like a builder door so that's a really great question and what I could tell you is there's larger manufacturers of garage doors throughout the country that own a lot of them but as far as new construction is concerned there's a company called Wayne Dalton and Wayne Dalton is a mammoth company they do most of the new home construction they've got different series stores 9100 is there common one 'cause it's semi insulated it's it's in my opinion it's kind of a flimsy door it's it's a cheap door but it's good for the builders they get a discount and rebates and things like that but Wayne Dalton has an interesting product because they've got proprietary springs called the torque master or a Torquemaster plus spring system and we do a lot of work our way Dallas is because that's just the majority of what the words get installed on a new home and it's interesting because years and years ago Joe it started out that Wayne Dalton had a five year warranty when you bought the home and had a five year warranty on parts and then they went to three-year on their torque masters then they went to one year now why would you warranty a product for one year and I'm not slamming wait Dalton I'm just telling you this is their policies on their website and with their products Can you imagine why you would have a one year warranty well first of all you're limiting your liability but you're not backing up your product I mean if it only has a one year warranty that means that it may not last more than a year they usually last 14-15 maybe two years it's all out cycle life so each time that it goes up and down as a cycle So what we do is we've got an opportunity to replace that torquemaster which by the way usually special order so it's a couple weeks out if you call Wayne Dalton they're primarily installation so they don't have a big service department they're usually out four to six weeks and during the pandemic they got behind right now they're I I've heard over a year behind on things we take a torquemaster we take down and we put a torsion spring conversion system so we put a conventional torque tube drums cables bearing plates and springs then we could give a lifetime warranty because that goes from a low cycle to an 80,000 cycles so if you use your door 10 times a day you're using it a few thousand times a year that's gonna last you I don't know 20 some odd years and we get a lot of calls 9100 it's lightly insulated door now check this out a regular door weighs about 160 pounds Wayne Dalton insulated 9100 weighs about 140 pounds so that just tells you it's literally II if I push really hard I can plug my finger through the door so it's like aluminum foil it is like a really, really heavy it's a well done foil it literally is like baked on foil and if you took a pencil you stick it through II it's a little thinner than a paint can OK so it's very efficient for them it's not that expensive but they're getting the job done because their job is to make sure that the builder has a door to put on the House so when you buy the home you have a door just like you'll have some paint and you'll have some carpet but it's kind of what we call builder grade well this is what I look at when I buy a home Joe I go out there and I look at certain things you could tell a lot believe it or not by the garage because you know as a garage door guys say what kind of opener did they put in or what kind of door did they put in because then I could basically tell you did they did they go the cheapest on the cabinets did they go they did they you know go with the slow closed cabinets what did they do on the outlets what do they do with the fans what do they do with most electronics in the home and there's certain things I look at when I'm looking at a new home I found out so my house was built in 1974 in Scottsdale we started doing a lot of construction in 2013 to my current house and the guy built it instead of two by fours he did two by threes throughout the whole neighborhood 2 by threes interior walls I hope yeah yeah I mean I went in there and really I mean the house never it's not gonna blow down or anything but I tell you what there's certain builders that just take corners and I'm not saying we don't have that product that really really great products but they're builder great is unfortunate because um what weight oil to try to do years and years ago is they try to come out I build all their open primary stuff well there's been recalls on most of it and they had a really strong engineering team that there was just a lot of issues and you know you wanna try that route you stick with Chamberlain products which is Liftmaster but we do a lot of work like I'm glad we dogs have business because it gives us a future especially other builder grade you know a lot of people are looking for the quick fix and we know builders are builders are really looking to get something that they can put in there and get that house sold because ultimately even if there's a one year warranty on the House from the builder sells a new house it's now the homeowners responsibility for everything in that home you really need to beware guys out there when you're looking at homes you know look at the garage door ask the inspector when you have the house inspected tell me about this garage door and actually you know knock on it see if your finger goes through it you know they they have some carriage style doors the 9700 the 6600 the 9405 and 9510 I mean they the most common door is there 83185 hundred models and then the door that I was talking about was there 9100 but they do have nice stores you know you got there 8000 series which is your typical non insulated I mean uh uh garage door done right install properly with the right struts will do good it's just you gotta look at the quality if you want it to last and it goes along with other things if you want a wood door you gotta put a clear coat on it every year or otherwise you know those those are expensive they're beautiful doors but they're very heavy they cost a lot to fix because there's a lot more parts they're bigger parts but I'll tell you what overall I love the garage door history because there's so many reasons why garage doors make sense number one you're probably using it as the entry door to your home so using it like your front number two door it's 40% of your curb appeal number three it’s the number one return on investment on the home five years in a row remodel magazine #5 I think I'm at the insulation could save you a lot of money on your electric bill it's going green and #6 is you could open your garage door from anywhere you could be in in in Europe and let your neighbors go in there to check on everything and row with the doors open or closed or get a notification let's say your daughter shows up at midnight one day from a date you know she got home at midnight there's no line about that so you got access through your phone through the garage and I just love it 'cause I'm packages now right into the garage so it's safe you don't have to worry about it getting you know the theft on the front porch I I just I'm glad it's not just you look at a track and keeping the house cool in the summer is important but we've got curb appeal we've got energy efficiency we've got the technology we've got a lot of cool things that's where you put your cars and your pastimes your golf clubs and end your Christmas lights and all that stuff so I'm just I'm fortunate to have found this industry yeah so many people use that garage door as their front door as you said Tommy they also use it as a storage unit and of course they're gonna park there baby in there but I'll tell you what happens people take it for granted until the garage door doesn't operate properly either the garage door operator or garage door opener has failed usually the spring is a big failure point and if here at Big Bang it means you gotta problem there and do not try to move the door yourself you won't be able to you gotta call a professional but getting back to the quality of the doors in the beginning anything new it's like a young person I joke about this all the time 'cause I'm getting a little older back in my 20s I could abuse myself a little bit more because my parts were younger but as I get older my parts aren't as young I have to take more care so as that garage door gets older if it's not a well-built door with great parts it's more likely to fail the question I always ask people Joe is do you run your car till it breaks or do you change the oil and there's specific things you do at 90,000 miles on the vehicle they don't look at the parts are bad they replace all the hoses they replace certain parts on the car regardless they don't wait for them to fail 'cause if you wait for something to fail it gets expensive it's dangerous and it never is a good timing so it's just like on a garage door we should come check out the parts before they completely fail because that's dangerous and it's not good for timing it never is and that's what I would tell people is and it's starting to make noise if you hadn't had a lubricated or looked at then you need to call a pro out there that they are dangerous you know last America report there's 40,000 reported and I'm sure probably 100,000 not reported issues so it's one of those things where it just happens at the worst time possible and I just I I hear doors and I'm like one day I was showing a guy his door and I didn't realize that he had the door off and I pulled the cord and the garage door was like a slingshot just it was like a just slams down and I'm like dude you got a broken spring and I showed him he goes that wasn't like that I go I just walked in here and pulled the red chord I didn't break your spring it gate couldn't believe it 'cause the opener is sometimes a really powerful opener could work off of 1 spring so you still got one spring helping but end it'll keep the cable tension but overall but you know I'm fortunate to be in this industry I think we're a great company we look out after our clients we can work on any make and model and the question I was asking myself is this for affixing or is it a better investment to replace it and my goal is not to have to see you every six months like most companies not some of these guys they go to Band-Aid fixes and you're out there if I've got bad breaks check out the rotors and calipers to make sure they're doing their job for me 'cause if they're not the brakes are gonna go bad every few months you're right maintenance is not that expensive either in the garage door space you guys have a program what is it 9 or 10 bucks a month or something yeah you know $9.95 a month and we come out once a year with lubricated just saying everything on the door you get cut in front of line for this batch and we're open nights weekends holidays you also get 15% off the bill we take care of our members we call those club members and it's a great relationship and our goal is hopefully one day you know 5-10 years on the line it shows us to replace the door because overtime it gets dense it fatigues it gets oxidized the trim wears out and our goal is to take kind of a and approach of let's build a relationship with you over the years to be your trusted advisor in your garage hoping that one day you'll make an investment into the home and will be the choice because we built that relationship. Many homeowners will have a plumbing guy an electrician in AC guy you've really got to have a garage door guy and you don't think much about it until it's Monday morning two kids in the back seat it's 6:45 AM gotta get to daycare and that meeting 'cause you're presenting that morning and your garage door doesn't open you will not get that Lexus out will you no no and it you know it's important you know I just got my floors done by our company two days ago we got the full chip epoxy it's a form of epoxy and um it looks absolutely phenomenal and I'm just I'm kind of embarrassed because I went to cheap way with the rust oleum Home Depot like a decade ago and I gotta tell you night and day when we did the floors it just looks like a premium house now I just I can't even explain it it's a garage floor but it's just nice and it just tells its a caliber of the home and you know I'm putting the storage in there and in Arizona we don't have basements so you're right I I got I have a lot of stuff everything from golf clubs I just got five electric bikes I got two that I bought two more than I just bought a tricycle because I'm near Old Town Scottsdale So what better than they have friends over yeah so they're charging in the garage all the time I just think it looks like a premium garage now you know it's interesting I was talking to Dan Antonelli from Kick Charge Creative today we were talking about branding of course it's not necessarily the vehicle it's how the vehicle looks same thing could be for the uniform on the individual well if your house is an OK house you can really make it look great Tommy had said a few moments ago that 30-40% of the facade of the home, the curb appeal is the garage doors you guys can swap out one or two garage doors in an afternoon and it'll look superb so my point is you can get your garage floor epoxy you can get new garage doors you can paint the house and you don't really have to have an expensive house to make it nice So what else Joe this is very simple but I have a buddy of mine he works at it's called snowman and it's where we recycle our metal so all of our old springs doors and he ordered a door from us and unfortunately the manufacturers got behind with this this pandemic so he was not happy but I said you know what let me come out there it just got installed I said let me put some decorative hardware on it gave him two nice kids and this is magnetic but it looks so good and I put the magnetic hardware on there and it's got the handles and he was just floored he was just so happy he goes, dude I had no idea that that little add on would make such a big difference on the quality of the home and it really does you put a couple sets on it looks like a carriage house style door and you know it doesn't look good on the cheek door it looks it looks it kind of looks like a Denny's steak if you and you put it on a cheap door but have you got a decent door and you got windows or something then you put it on it and I go lung panel which is 4 rectangles versus the eight squares it really looks nice alright Tommy hey thanks for your time I appreciate it Tommy mele one garage door service A1 garage.com check out their Jingle too I love that whenever I say A1 garage.com when i'm giving out the website I think of A1 garage. Transcript of podcast: The garage door is important to our home everybody and we don't think a lot about it when we press the button I asked my good friend John Phillips from A1 Garage Door Service to join me on the program today to talk about something that we just don't think a lot about and that's the garage door opener also called the garage door operator and John is going to Enlighten us about the differences the importance of the balance door and so forth John welcome to the program Hey Joe how's it going thanks for having me back on it's great to have you here so the garage door operator or what some people call the garage door opener it's an important piece isn't it yes it is it's uh it's the the brain of the operations it's what automates your door to make it convenient from you from your car and nowadays even your phone to 1:04 where you don't have to get out and open 1:05 it manually you can just do it all at 1:07 the push of a button a lot of changes in 1:09 technology before we dive into that tell 1:12 everybody who's listening the importance 1:14 of the door being balanced first before 1:17 that garage door operator does its job 1:21 so a lot of people are under the 1:23 impression that the the operator is what 1:26 lifts the entire door and we've covered 1:29 this in other sections as well but it 1:31 just automates it that's all it does it 1:33 just tells the door to open and close a 1:37 good functioning door with good parts on 1:39 it that's balanced with springs at 1:40 proper tension good bearings drums 1:43 cables hinges rollers making sure the 1:46 door is installed Plumbing straight and 1:48 perfectly aligned if these things aren't 1:50 done then the operator is kind of 1:52 useless and people spend good money on 1:54 operators and to to have a door that's 1:57 lacking or faulty in any of these 1:59 mechanical functions uh you could be 2:02 just wasting your money and ruining the 2:03 motor 2:04 yeah absolutely I encourage people all 2:06 the time to get their doors maintained 2:09 on a regular basis to make sure 2:11 everything is bolted down properly 2:13 literally screwed down because things 2:14 can loosen up and to make sure that that 2:16 spring is wound properly that it's in 2:19 good shape everything's lubricated and 2:21 the balance is so key and this is 2:23 something we talk about John and the 2:25 average person can't really figure out 2:27 the proper balance you guys use 2:29 equipment to determine whether or not 2:31 any given door is properly imbalanced 2:33 and then once it is everything is nice 2:36 and straight and square and everything's 2:39 in balance that garage door without the 2:41 operator without it engaged should 2:44 simply go up and down with just your 2:45 finger it should just move nice and 2:47 easily because we don't want a lot of 2:49 wear and tear on that garage door 2:51 operator so once it's all balanced the 2:54 garage door operator does its job so 2:57 there's a lot of new technology today 2:59 you want to talk about the differences 3:01 and and the great options there are 3:03 right without nerding out too much the 3:05 most basic function now is obviously 3:07 moving up and down and those motors used 3:10 to be AC Motors so alternating current 3:12 the motors were a little bit big a 3:14 little bit louder and then slowly but 3:17 surely we're progressing over to DC 3:19 motors so that's direct current it's a 3:22 smaller motor but in the garage door 3:24 application it's actually more powerful 3:25 and the coolest thing about it is with a 3:27 DC motor you have higher speed function 3:31 and what that does for your garage doors 3:33 so when the door goes to lay on the 3:35 ground and shut as the speed option 3:37 where it slows down and Feathers the 3:39 door down and that's the same thing when 3:40 coming up so it's not this abrupt 3:43 stopped where the doors hit in the 3:44 ground so anytime that you can hear the 3:46 door closing and hitting the ground 3:48 that's not good that's a jolt to the 3:50 entire system and it's a wear on the 3:52 doors with these DC motors that are 3:54 coming out now it's nice and gentle 3:56 pulls the door gradually gets up to 3:58 speed so it still opens it just as fast 4:00 it's just at the very end of that 4:02 closing and the very end of that opening 4:04 it feathers it nice and neat and so your 4:07 door is going to last a lot longer 4:08 sounds a lot safer too for some reason 4:10 it just sounds safer is there any safety 4:13 benefits to this as well yeah so with 4:15 the slow start and stop without geeking 4:17 out too much so the travel modules and 4:20 the RPMs whenever they go into an AC 4:23 motor they're hard set they slip they 4:25 wear out over time with the DC motor 4:27 it's all plugged in and it's all 4:29 electronic so it's a lot more sensitive 4:31 and safe so things such as forces which 4:33 is what the door is wanting to push or 4:35 pull through that's a lot more 4:37 fine-tuned which is the biggest part 4:38 that can be the difference in between 4:40 hurting things that are at the bottom of 4:42 the door or the operator pulling the 4:44 door apart on the way up so it is 4:46 significantly safer times have changed 4:48 from when I was a young boy and I would 4:50 have my friend go over to the button 4:52 inside the garage and say okay press it 4:55 and as that door opened up I would rise 4:57 off the ground I was six seven years old 4:59 and I don't encourage Us by the way okay 5:02 so do not do this the reason why I bring 5:04 this up is back in the day for whatever 5:08 reason that garage door was able to lift 5:09 me up those garage doors were pretty 5:11 heavy too they were all wood today a lot 5:13 of the garage doors are actually a lot 5:14 lighter made of a metal type material so 5:16 things have changed a lot so do not grab 5:18 the garage door I don't have anything in 5:21 the way don't attach anything to it let 5:23 it go up and down easily and have it 5:25 balanced I recommend that you have a one 5:28 garage door service on a regular basis 5:31 come out to your home 5:33 regardless whether you have one or three 5:35 or four garage doors have them maintain 5:37 it on a regular basis because when they 5:39 come out and they lubricate it and they 5:41 tighten everything up and they basically 5:43 look at everything your garage door is 5:44 not only going to last longer but it's 5:46 going to be a lot safer you guys have a 5:51 great program that's not that expensive 5:52 for people to plug into where you guys 5:55 come out on a regular basis can you talk 5:57 a little bit about that yeah so we have 5:59 our worry-free membership and what that 6:01 is is garage doors need a maintenance 6:04 plan and we need experts to come out and 6:06 look at the door make sure everything's 6:07 okay we want it to be hassle-free for 6:09 our clients so we get on the membership 6:12 you get perks and discounts and safety 6:15 features such as surge protectors for 6:17 your operator maintenance plans as well 6:19 to keep it up to date and then also you 6:22 get discounts on any future work and 6:24 whether you have one door on your home 6:26 or 20 Doors which I haven't seen yet at 6:28 one single home we're going to take care 6:30 of all of them for 8.95 a month well you 6:32 apparently haven't been to Jay Leno home 6:34 so I don't know how many garage doors he 6:36 has but he's got a lot of cars I I do 6:39 know that 6:40 technology my cue that's a big thing 6:43 that people are getting involved with 6:44 now can you touch upon the MyQ system 6:47 yeah so the my queue is a Bluetooth and 6:51 Wi-Fi compatibility to where your 6:53 operator is hooked up to the Internet or 6:55 Wi-Fi of your home and then now you 6:57 control your garage door from anywhere 6:59 and it also has sensory on it to where 7:02 it can tell you if it's open or closed 7:03 and timed and stamped and the MyQ app is 7:06 perfect so you don't have to worry 7:08 anymore did I close the garage door 7:09 there's timers for that but you can 7:11 always check on it it'll give you alerts 7:13 you can know when your kids got home 7:15 from school if you're still working they 7:17 have camera options as well so you can 7:19 get a live video feed and a two-way 7:22 radio into the garage so that's super 7:24 fun and then also backup batteries as 7:28 well for in case the power goes out and 7:30 then probably my favorite feature is 7:33 probably the Amazon key that is so 7:36 Amazon can hook up to that one time they 7:39 don't step into your garage or anything 7:41 like that and they're able to drop off 7:43 packages straight into your garage and 7:46 then close the garage door and it's 7:47 complete secure no porch Pirates no 7:50 packages getting ruined from weather 7:52 your package is completely safe and a 7:54 secure dry place and who could ask for 7:57 anything better as far as Amazon 7:58 delivery what a complete package no pun 8:01 intended with the Amazon thing I'm 8:02 talking about the MyQ technology it's a 8:05 fantastic package all together even if 8:08 you have a garage door operator garage 8:10 door opener that's not that old it might 8:13 be a good time to swap it out because 8:15 you may have kind of a simple garage 8:18 door opener where you have a remote 8:19 control and yes you were able to sync it 8:22 into your automobile so you can just 8:24 press the button on the roof of your car 8:25 as you drive in some of us just have 8:28 that I mean that's it but when we can 8:30 talk back and forth when we can let the 8:33 package guy in from Amazon when we've 8:35 got cameras and we've got more safety 8:37 features it doesn't cost that much to 8:40 get a system like this installed uh John 8:43 could you share any of the costs at all 8:44 roughly of what it would cost to have a 8:47 system like MyQ installed in general 8:49 well the beautiful thing is my queue is 8:52 actually becoming the standard so you 8:55 can get it on the more economical grade 8:56 Motors or you can get it on a motor 8:59 that's going to last you for years to 9:01 come 9:03 so it doesn't really matter the budget 9:05 or the cost my queue is available 9:06 probably the coolest thing about MyQ as 9:09 well is also another problem is people 9:12 with security in their homes so people 9:14 don't like having remotes just out in 9:17 their garages in their cars they say 9:19 that that's a security risk and I agree 9:21 with them so if you have all of your 9:23 remotes just attached directly to your 9:25 phone which is attached at the hip you 9:28 don't have any remotes wandering around 9:29 you don't have to worry about losing 9:31 them you don't have to worry about 9:31 people stealing him and having access to 9:34 your home anymore it's all safe and 9:36 within your phone that's a good point I 9:39 control my thermostat and my lights and 9:41 a lot of other things with my phone may 9:43 as well do my garage door as well right 9:45 sync it up and John thank you so much 9:47 for joining me today here on the program 9:48 I really appreciate it oh I appreciate 9:51 you too it's always a pleasure to talk 9:52 and thank you for everything Checker Pro 9:54 is your local source for pre-qualified 9:56 contractors stay tuned for more of the 9:58 Check A Pro radio show.

17 Aug 2022 | A1 Garage Door Service - Repair Or Replace Your Garage Door | 00:11:00
Jon Phillips from A1 Garage Door Service joins Check A Pro Joe on this episode of Check A Pro Radio. Joe and Jon discuss the decision to repair or replace the garage door. A1 is a leader in the garage door industry! Check out this episode to learn how the A1 team delivers the best service in the industry. For assistance with your garage doors please call A1 Garage Door Service - (844) 214-2025. Log on to - www.a1garage.com I love talking about garage doors and the subject today is really exciting because our listeners have a choice when their garage door begins to age or maybe it's broken in need of repair and the real question is is do we put more money into this old garage door or do we invest in a new one and get the one we've always wanted that will last longer that's exactly correct um my biggest thing fix or replace we have the parts we can put it on the door we can make it run up and down but you're still stuck with the cracks and the bends and the outside aesthetics the paint is oxidizing there's just no none of that to the front of your home you know you got that 1985 through 1990 honda accord you drop a new transmission and or an engine into it and you're driving it around that's great the car runs good but you're still stuck in that same car but you go and get a new car and you get in there how does that make you feel yeah and you know in garage doors it's not like cars there are no classics right no one says oh my gosh look at that look at that 1965 garage door it's a classic we do that with 1:47 automobiles but we don't do it with 1:48 garage doors a door that's from 1965 1:53 is is well retired 1:56 yeah maybe some old garage door heads 1:58 will be like oh that they don't 1:59 manufacture that door anymore and they 2:01 might kind of geek out on it but as far 2:03 as the general populace no no one's 2:05 looking for classic garage doors 2:07 exactly 2:08 so the real question is is does it make 2:11 sense to just move forward with a better 2:15 door because many people 2:17 buy a home that has what i call builder 2:20 grade doors okay the door is basically 2:23 good enough to sell the house when the 2:25 builder builds it unless it's a real 2:27 nice custom home so that being said 2:31 you can put a real nice new garage door 2:33 that's going to be quieter run smoother 2:35 and last a lot longer john 2:38 yeah that's correct and there's when 2:40 you're a homeowner 2:42 you want to make your home as best as 2:44 possible and people have all these 2:45 upgrades they want to do the walk-in 2:47 closet they want to do the kitchen 2:50 and redo their entire home 2:53 right but the return on investment 2:55 kitchen's one of those ones we redo the 2:56 kitchen it's going to raise our home 2:58 value anything that i put in the home if 3:00 you're smart with your money you want it 3:02 to pay for itself 3:04 down the line well garage doors 3:07 for the past 10 years ranging between 95 3:10 to 104 percent roi with a return on your 3:14 investment 3:16 for the past 10 years over all those 3:18 home improvements 3:19 so the garage door if you're even 3:21 picking like what do i want to do what 3:23 can benefit my home the greatest garage 3:25 door is at the top of the list and you 3:27 don't have to take my word for it just 3:29 go look it up online what's the number 3:31 one home improvement return on 3:33 investment and you'll see it right there 3:34 year after year above 95 minimum yeah 3:38 and john you're absolutely right and 3:40 really the big reason why 3:43 is because garage doors replacement 3:47 service and repair all of it 3:49 is one of the least expensive in terms 3:52 of dollars home improvement so it's not 3:54 like a new swimming pool and a new 3:56 kitchen and a new roof that's what 3:57 really helps the roi on it so a lot of 4:00 people say my gosh what does it cost to 4:01 get a new garage door you know it's 4:03 going to be astronomical i'm telling you 4:06 it's one of the least expensive home 4:07 improvements you can make and in many 4:09 instances the facade of the home 4:13 has about 30 to 40 percent 4:16 garage door and it's really important 4:19 for the curb appeal so why not upgrade 4:21 that door 4:23 that's exactly right so 40 of your curb 4:26 appeal i would say 4:27 as far as the aesthetics of your house 4:29 when you pull in if you get a new garage 4:31 door your neighbors are going to come up 4:33 to you and say did you paint the house 4:35 that's the only thing it looks like you 4:37 repainted the entire home 4:40 right but paint that wears after a 4:42 little bit a lot of garage door 4:43 manufacturers and company 4:45 the surface and finish of the door is 4:47 lifetime warranty so it's not going to 4:49 fade like painting your house it's the 4:51 most least expensive longest lasting 4:55 best return on investment that you can 4:56 do on the aesthetics of your home it's 4:58 amazing 4:59 no question uh for those of you who are 5:02 thinking of selling your home 5:04 i'm telling you one of the things you 5:06 should get done is your garage door 5:09 because it is such a big part 5:12 literally it's a big wide part of many 5:16 of our 5:17 homes unless you have a side entry but 5:19 if we have that front entry and you've 5:21 got two or three doors 5:24 that's pretty significant and you're 5:26 going to make a big difference in the 5:29 look of the home another thing is you 5:31 might want to get your front door 5:34 worked on either painted or refinished 5:36 if it's a wood door and of course weed 5:39 the flower beds and and mulch and just 5:42 clean things up wherever you need to but 5:45 john is so right the 5:47 the cost which i wouldn't even call it a 5:49 cost the investment 5:51 in new garage doors is minimal and john 5:55 quickly explain the wide array because 5:57 people don't have to have the top top 6:00 end i mean they can get okay they can 6:02 get an insulated door steel-backed all 6:04 happy great garage door whether you're 10:29 going to be in the home forever or 10:30 you're selling it and you know it's 10:32 taken care of 10:33 it's really that simple 10:35 john phillips from a1 garage door 10:38 really cool it's new 0:33 delivery companies are using it and you 0:35 can use it as well it's called MyQ it's 0:37 for your garage door hey John it's good 0:39 to see you buddy good to see you too 0:40 checkpro Joe how you been fantastic pal 0:43 all right my Q we've heard about this 0:45 not many people have it yet but almost 0:48 anyone can get it with either a new 0:50 garage door operator setup or maybe even 0:52 a retrofit why don't you talk about it 0:54 so we all have our Smart Homes now you 0:57 got the ring camera you got the security 1:00 systems well LiftMaster Genie all of 1:03 them have their own special type with 1:04 LiftMaster it's my cue Genie uses 1:06 Aladdin and we can make a smart home 1:09 it's Safety and Security convenience and 1:12 everyone's doing it with ring and all 1:14 the other security systems as well it 1:16 just seems only natural that we would do 1:18 it with your garage as well the biggest 1:20 moving object in your home and the 1:22 biggest gaping hole in your home we want 1:24 to make sure that that's safe and we can 1:25 monitor it we also want to give our 1:27 clients benefits whenever they use these 1:29 systems yeah so give an example of how 1:33 MyQ can help someone is it because 1:36 they're out of town and they aren't sure 1:39 if they put the garage door down maybe 1:41 they want to see what's going on in the 1:43 garage maybe there's a package delivery 1:45 give us some ideas of how versatile this 1:48 product is the initial step is the 1:50 security of it the MyQ app super easy to 1:53 use and what we can do is we can monitor 1:55 one if anything's wrong with the garage 1:57 door we can monitor if the doors been oh 2:00 open and set it time to close so you 2:02 don't have to worry about it anymore 2:03 we can also set it one of the best 2:05 features is a lot of people are busy 2:08 they're traveling they work they have 2:11 things to do and then you got the 2:12 plumber you got the garage door guy you 2:14 got the full service you got this you 2:16 got that and you can actually set it to 2:18 codes whether that's to family whether 2:20 you trust them and you want to give them 2:22 a code Forever you can have set to 2:24 specific times of the day that they have 2:27 access to it and you can give them 2:29 one-time coats to get in so your full 2:32 Monitor and access to your garage 2:34 without the inconvenience of having to 2:36 give someone a remote or for you to have 2:38 to even be home and with the camera 2:40 benefit as well you can see what's going 2:43 on and then that's not even starting 2:45 into the delivery system that Amazon or 2:48 Walmart delivery can do to where we can 2:50 drop off packages we don't have any more 2:52 porch Pirates you can see it on the 2:54 camera they actually don't even step in 2:56 the garage what they do is they open the 2:57 garage up it's a one-time code 2:59 completely secured through MyQ on Amazon 3:01 they have it on their little beeper 3:03 where they check everything 3:04 just opens it that one time slide it in 3:07 you see it on camera your package is 3:09 nice safe dry everything's good to go 3:11 and they close the door they don't leave 3:12 until the door is closed so it's full 3:15 proof and the security and to get your 3:17 house modern and the convenience because 3:19 we're busy we got stuff to do to make 3:21 convenient for everyone and probably the 3:24 biggest bush is this is actually 3:25 standard and a lot of Motors that are 3:28 out there right now and people just 3:30 aren't utilizing it even though they 3:31 have it so whether you want to get a 3:33 brand new system you want to upgrade the 3:35 system that you have or maybe you 3:37 already have my cue and you're just not 3:38 using it to its full capability for more 3:41 information on this simply go to A1 3:44 Garage Door Service all of the 3:47 information is in the description of the 3:50 podcast to get a hold of these guys you 3:52 guys are based in Phoenix and you're in 3:53 over 29 30 markets now aren't you yeah 3:56 we're everywhere and we're growing like 3:58 wildfire it's crazy yeah it's fantastic 4:00 John I know you have a handful of MyQ 4:03 products right there with you take a few 4:05 moments to talk about them we can 4:07 upgrade it so you have an internet 4:09 gateway and we can upgrade the buttons 4:11 so this has nice time to close features 4:13 everything like that you can get it in 4:15 wide as well different ones where we can 4:17 monitor where the door's at we can also 4:19 get it with the camera hook up so you 4:21 don't have to get a whole new garage 4:22 door operator if you're not in the 4:24 market for that we can just get a simple 4:25 camera fix that you can set anywhere in 4:28 your garage and I've even seen people 4:29 use this by their front door instead of 4:31 a ring camera it just depends on what 4:32 you want to do and you can get multiple 4:34 ones and set them throughout the house 4:35 and it's all conveniently in one portion 4:38 of my Q app lighting's a big issue that 4:41 some people have especially if you have 4:43 an older model that doesn't take LEDs 4:45 that might interfere with the remotes so 4:47 we have these portable lights that we 4:49 can sit around it's about 1500 lumens in 4:52 it and you can hook it up and you can do 4:53 light control and everything like that 4:55 so when you get that camera we can light 4:57 up the garage you know lights camera 4:59 action so we can actually see what's 5:00 going on in there and it's kind of 5:02 Limitless on the number that you can put 5:04 it on these and one of my favorite 5:06 things is that LiftMaster is actually 5:08 partnered with Yale uh they're kind of 5:10 an auto lock company and they do a lot 5:12 of security well now they have an auto 5:14 smart for your man door whether it's to 5:16 your garage or your front door and then 5:19 that's included in the MyQ app as well 5:21 so you can even set to your own front 5:22 door not just the garage so it's not 5:24 just homeowners with garages right if 5:26 you've got a detached garage and that 5:28 doesn't really pertain to your house we 5:29 can also get this set up so this is a 5:32 big big player when it comes to WalMart 5:34 delivery for those groceries 5:36 everything's integrated it all works 5:39 well 5:40 the delivery guy can drop off your 5:43 package and you can see it on video it's 5:46 it's all recorded so you don't have to 5:48 worry about anything and it's just so 5:50 much easier we're all so busy nowadays 5:52 we're worried about the porch Pirates we 5:53 want safety we want good lighting we 5:55 want convenience it's all there in the 5:57 my queue hey John thank you so much for 5:59 joining me today I appreciate it thank 6:00 you so much and just one more thing for 6:03 all those people out there go out into 6:04 your garage right now look at your 6:06 operator and see if it's Chamberlain or 6:08 LiftMaster if it has a little Wi-Fi 6:11 symbol in it download the respective app 6:14 use it and Implement your money's worth 6:16 you have the product use my cue make 6:19 life simple excellent thanks again John 6:21 appreciate it thanks again Joe Checker 6:23 Pro is your local source for 6:25 pre-qualified contractors stay tuned for 6:27 more of the Check A Pro radio show!

31 Jan 2023 | Does The Cold Weather Affect My Garage Door And Garage Door Springs? | 00:08:30
Today on the show Check A Pro Joe is joined by Jon Phillips from A1 Garage Door Service, headquartered in Phoenix, AZ. Joe asks Jon this question: "How Does The Cold Weather Affect My Garage Door And Garage Door Springs?" Check out this episode for the answer to this commonly asked question... For assistance with your garage doors please call A1 Garage Door Service - (844) 214-2025. Log on to - www.a1garage.com
Podcast Transcription: 0:00 it's spring snapping season we're not 0:04 talking about fishing or something it 0:06 sounds like a fishing thing it's it's 0:07 the season four no we are talking about 0:09 your garage door spring when the 0:13 temperature goes up in the summertime 0:15 and down in the winter time as we are 0:17 now in winter time we go to these 0:20 extreme changes your spring on your 0:23 garage door is more likely to snap I've 0:25 asked a garage door expert John Phillips 0:28 from A1 Garage Door Service to join me 0:30 here on the program to discuss this hi 0:32 John how are you 0:34 Hey Joe how's it going thanks for having 0:36 me back on no absolutely so 0:39 um I've known this for some time in the 0:42 extreme heat and you know we get that a 0:45 lot in the Phoenix area for instance 0:46 where A1 is based 0:50 um the Springs don't like the extremes 0:53 and also in the winter time we can get 0:55 cool too or cold and that's not good so 0:59 tell us what happens when we hit these 1:01 extremes 1:02 right so Springs metal uh hot oil 1:05 tempered there's galvanized but at the 1:07 end of the day the base is metal and 1:10 you'll have a spring and maybe it's a 1:12 little bit out of its cycle life it's a 1:13 little bit older and just that that last 1:16 straw that broke the camel's back is 1:18 that fluctuation in weather whether it 1:20 goes from hot to cold or cold to hot 1:22 that's just the last piece that it takes 1:24 and then bang hear that loud noise in 1:27 the garage you don't know what it was 1:29 until you can't open the door you know 1:32 that's just it that's a Telltale sign if 1:34 you hear a bang in your garage and your 1:37 kids aren't playing with firecrackers 1:38 and your husband's not in there with the 1:39 gun it's likely right it's likely the 1:44 spring because it makes a big bang and 1:46 when that happens please do not try to 1:48 move your door you really can't it's 1:50 very heavy isn't it yeah it's super 1:52 heavy especially if you're on like a 1:54 single spring system then we don't have 1:57 anything to lift up that door so 1:59 whenever you get the opportunity always 2:01 put two Springs on a door when you can 2:04 so let's talk about ways of keeping the 2:08 cool air out in the winter time and the 2:10 hot air out in the summertime with 2:13 weather seal and also kind of keeps the 2:15 critters out too right so whenever 2:17 starting with the spring snapping you're 2:20 going to get a garage door Tech out 2:21 there and it's going to come to a point 2:24 where you're putting money into the door 2:25 now of course at A1 Garage Door we have 2:28 the best Springs that last over 80 000 2:31 cycles and you'll never have to worry 2:32 about it again but at the same time do 2:36 you want to put that work into a door do 2:38 you even like that door 2:40 so yes we can repair the door but we got 2:43 to talk about the investment value and 2:45 is the garage cold so you want to put 2:48 money into the door but you never go out 2:50 in the garage because whichever heat or 2:52 cold is going on outside makes it 2:54 unbearable in your garage so what can we 2:58 do to make your garage comfortable and 3:00 work for you and going from the trim to 3:03 the bottom rubber to the actual door 3:05 installation itself and what it's made 3:06 out of how about we get you into 3:08 something that you actually like and 3:10 gives you a good Roi or return on 3:13 investment for you 3:14 and John you know what's nice about 3:16 getting an entire new door is you have 3:19 the opportunity to get a new track 3:21 system new rollers new hinges new 3:23 everything the new seals and it is brand 3:27 new right so every it's like getting a 3:29 new car you're not just getting a new 3:31 transmission you're not just getting new 3:33 Wheels you're getting a whole new car 3:36 and it's not that expensive for a huge 3:39 makeover not only are you getting a 3:41 great mechanical device which is your 3:42 garage door but it you know 3:43 aesthetically 3:45 it's huge uh in general doesn't the 3:49 garage door make up to 40 of the facade 3:52 of people's homes yes it does it's the 3:55 number one curb appeal I mean I've had 3:58 I've installed new garage doors before 4:01 and then the Neighbors come home and 4:03 then they come up to me they see my van 4:05 it says garage door guy on it and they 4:08 come up to me and the house looks so 4:10 different they'll come up and be like 4:11 hey can I get your business card do you 4:13 paint paint houses did you just paint 4:14 their entire home it looks so different 4:16 I'm like no we just replaced the garage 4:19 door it's a huge huge deal 4:21 and John you know that can be done in a 4:24 matter of hours versus actually painting 4:28 a home which doesn't give you that brand 4:30 new garage door it doesn't give you that 4:32 feature so let's say that you just have 4:33 a builder grade garage door but now you 4:36 want some Dimension to it maybe you want 4:38 those external looking hinges like a 4:40 carriage house look maybe you want some 4:42 windows in it maybe you want an 4:43 insulated door let's talk a little bit 4:45 about that yeah so if we're going to 4:48 talk about reinvesting in your home and 4:50 giving your home like a facelift and it 4:53 comes upon insulation so some people you 4:55 have a Pandora which is just sheet metal 4:58 essentially that's stamped uh you have 5:00 vinyl backed uh which is just styrofoam 5:03 so it has this thing called polystyrene 5:05 it looks like this it's like the packing 5:08 foam for all your old Christmas stuff 5:10 that you keep in the garage that makes a 5:12 little snow globe every year when you 5:13 break it out to decorate these holidays 5:15 and then it's just got this nice little 5:18 glue that's it so this is just sitting 5:20 inside of a Pandora and the insulation 5:23 is is minimal it's not really do 5:25 anything because the typical exterior 5:27 wall if you got 2x4 exterior walls it's 5:30 going to range in between 13 to 15 R 5:33 value 5:34 but then you got two by six walls and 5:36 then that ranges from 19 to 21. so 5:39 just average home we're going to say is 5:41 around 13 on an exterior wall so that's 5:44 where we should start so that's going to 5:46 happen and polyurethane doors and you 5:49 can see in a polyurethane door it's an 5:51 injected foam and it fills all the 5:53 cracks and crevices in there and it 5:55 expands the structural rigidity the 5:57 insulation value the quietness because 6:00 it's heavy so if you get some nice nylon 6:02 rollers you get some good hinges we get 6:04 it up on a maintenance plan you're never 6:06 even going to hear that thing so 6:08 whenever you're picking do you want to 6:10 spend a little bit of money on something 6:12 that you're going to have to spend more 6:15 money down the line because you're just 6:18 getting a product that warps and shapes 6:20 and doesn't do anything and your water 6:23 heater you got a washer to dryer out in 6:25 the garage or do you want to invest a 6:27 little bit more and have like a 6:28 bulletproof door and essentially if your 6:31 garage is sealed and you have a good 6:33 insulated door we have a good trim and 6:36 weather seal and bottom rubber because 6:37 it doesn't matter how thick the door is 6:39 if I got all four corners of it exposed 6:42 to the outside it's not doing anything 6:44 but if I have good seal good 6:45 polyurethane 6:47 you should be able to open your man 6:49 dwarf to your kitchen or whatever you 6:51 have it and have it the same temperature 6:52 as your house 6:54 yeah it's uh really makes a big 6:57 difference I have a three-car garage and 6:59 both of my garage doors I've got a 7:01 double garage and a single and 7:04 years ago I replaced my 18 year old 7:08 garage doors that were barely working 7:11 with insulated doors that have the glass 7:15 in it the windows and those are double 7:18 pane so we're talking about a highly 7:21 insulated door with high r value yes yes 7:25 usually they can fill those with a argon 7:27 gas which is in between which is a good 7:30 filter and bracer between the R value so 7:33 insulated Windows depending on the style 7:35 the thickness of the door just if you're 7:38 gonna spend a little bit of money at 7:42 least let's fit in something that's 7:43 going to benefit you and you can get 7:45 your money back because garage doors 7:47 have the number one Roi of any home 7:49 improvement over your kitchen which is 7:51 going to go out of style in 10 years 7:53 over bathrooms over anything the garage 7:55 door is going to hold its value so 7:57 you're not losing anything and you're 7:59 going to save on your electricity bill 8:00 your home is going to look Stellar it's 8:02 going to look brand new this just makes 8:04 sense to get a good insulated door 8:07 for more information go to 8:10 a1garage.com all of John's contact 8:13
