20 Dec 2024Should Dental Hygienists Call Patients? with Andrew Johnston, RDH00:09:48

It's a bit of a friction point when an office asks the dental hygiene team to help fill the schedule by calling patients. We literally have positions in the office whose main task is answering and placing calls to patients. Additionally, there is an unbalance between the hygiene and restorative department - the restorative department is almost never asked to make calls to patients for appointments.
Be that as it may, this TIPisode gives some points to ponder about why it might be a GREAT idea for RDHs to pick up the phone and make some calls, give it a listen!

08 Apr 2020222 Prepping Your Office and Your Patients for Post-Pandemic Care with Dr. Brian Baliwas SFDentalNerd01:04:24

The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly affected how everyone carries out their business, and that includes dental professionals—especially when you consider how much infection control factors into our work. Andrew and Michelle had the opportunity this week to speak to a dentist whose own office has been impacted.

Brian Baliwas, DDS is a cosmetic dentist based out of San Francisco. Known as the SFDentalNerd, Dr. Baliwas works for Union Square Dental Group and specializes in the elective procedures that have been scaled back as the COVID-19 pandemic intensifies and social distancing measures increase.

In this episode, Dr. Baliwas discusses how the pandemic has changed how Dr. Baliwas’s team and their patients approach dental procedures, speculate on how the pandemic will change infection control, and confronts the idea that elective procedures are unnecessary.

EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS:

Interview starts: 17:29

- Dr. Baliwas discusses how COVID has impacted business at his clinic and the difficulty in impressing the seriousness of the virus to some patients.

- Why this situation should get us to realize how necessary some elective procedures really are.

- How Dr. Baliwas is balancing the importance of dental work while emphasizing why people need to stay at home right now.

- Dr. Baliwas explains how social media has played a critical role in reaching out to patients and colleagues alike.

- The “Dexter Standard” of infection control and how Dr. Baliwas weighs his options while treating patients during the quarantine.

- How will Dr. Baliwas’s approach to infection control and PPE change in the aftermath of COVID.

QUOTES:

“Now, we’re gonna have to dig ourselves out of this hole and really education our patients again about the urgency of some of this stuff.”

“It might just help out with a shelter-in-place or people staying at home if we kept the value of what we were doing up high.”

“I’ve built a good practice of people who value my work, who understand it, understand what we’re doing, and they’re invested.”

“If you’re not doing the things that most people don’t think is overkill anyway, then you might be held liable for that.”

“We gotta see the silver lining here and really push our infection control to be improved.”

“Approach it from a place of being helpful rather than being sales-y.”

02 Dec 2020256 Student Focused Presents: Confidence In Administering Local Anesthesia01:03:00

Please Leave a Review!

It’s A Tale of Two Hygienists’ monthly student roundtable episode, which means Andrew and Michelle have invited a roster of guests to educate student listeners on a chosen topic. This month’s topic can be a nerve-wracking one for patients and hygienists alike: administering anesthesia.

Tina Clarke is a dental hygienist based in Oregon, which is one of the more liberal states when it comes to anesthesia administration; she is 20-year hygienist, has worked 14 years as an educator, and is known as the go-to person in her area when it comes to anesthesia. Marion Manski works as an associate professor at Fones School of Dental Hygiene as part of the University of Bridgeport. She has been teaching local anesthesia for over a decade.

In this episode, our guests reveal the secrets of the “Stab Lab,” use smoothie straws to explain the idea of a bevel, and delve into the legal restrictions on anesthesia usage from state to state.

EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS:

Interview starts: 4:06

- Why no training dummy can measure up to an actual person when practicing anesthesia techniques.

- Tina and Marion share their tips and tricks for calming your nerves while giving injections.

- The importance of understanding “anatomical landmarks” when lining up your injection.

- Why Marion advocates pairing articaine with septocaine, and the reason septocaine ended up getting such a bad rap.

- The guests’ recipes for success when it comes to sharps safety.

- Considering what a hygienist can say or do to calm patients before and during injections.

QUOTES:

“[Anesthesia] is not as scary as we think.”

“You can use the mannequin just so far, and then you need to do the real deal.”

“You also learn a lot when you are the patient.”

“Visualize popping a zit when you’re giving that injection!”

“I think we can all agree hygienists give way better shots.”

“We’re teaching it all the same, it’s just [that] States’ rights get in the way.”

“If the electric test went all the way to the maximum value, well typically that means that something’s not right.”

“If the root canal is done properly, your success rates are in the 90 to 90% range.”

“You CANNOT sterilize the inside of the tooth.”

“If you’re hearing someone talk about doing a root canal on somebody’s lower molars and they’re only finding three canals every time that they do it, well odds are they’re probably missing some.”

Interview starts minute 8:10

In part 2 of the airway series, we talk about life’s stages. We begin with babies, even before they are born and the impact that the mother’s airway has on the child throughout prenatal existence. Then we continue through life until we reach geriatrics. It's a fascinating journey that I think everyone will enjoy!

11 Sep 2019192 OSAP: The Best Kept Secret in Infection Control with Michelle Lee00:54:09

Andrew and Michelle recently discussed infection and contagion control at length with their last trio of roundtable guests, one of who was kind enough to return and chat further about an organization that makes patient safety in the office a top priority.

Michelle Lee is the executive director of the Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Prevention (OSAP), a body that advocates for safe and clean oral healthcare. Michelle and OSAP work with dental professionals to ensure that patients receiving oral and orthodontic treatment have little to no risk of catching infections or anything contagious.

In this episode, Michelle breaks down the differences between OSAP, OSHA and the CDC, explains OSAP’s surprising relationship with the armed forces, and takes a close look at the various risks infection poses to all areas of dentistry.

EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS:

Interview starts:

- What is OSAP, what role does Michelle play in the organization, and how does it differ from OSHA?

- What kinds of organizations and people make up OSAP’s rank and file?

- Michelle discusses some of the issues OSAP is focusing on right now and what kinds of events they arrange.

- The reason there’s a surprisingly high presence of military members at OSAP’s boot camps.

- Michelle explains the Dental Assistant National Board (DANB) and how they’ve recently partnered with OSAP.

- How you can keep updated with OSAP via social media and where you can go to ask any questions you may have.

- The extra challenges posed by mobile dental units for infection control.

QUOTES:

“There’s a lot more to infection control than just employee safety.”

“We don’t want to be exclusive; we want that message out there to all dental professionals.”

“We can all work together and help build up each other’s associations.”

“We want to make patients realize we’re there to take care of them and make their lives better.”

10 Jun 2020231 Periodontal Disease: AAP Periodontal Classification And Patient Education With Katrina Sanders, RDH01:47:51

Please Leave a Review!

It’s a new month, which means that A Tale of Two Hygienists is embarking on a new series. This time around, Michelle is indulging in her favorite interest—periodontal disease—and has invited someone who can easily walk you through every step of periodontitis.

Katrina Sanders, aka the “Dental Winegenist,” has been a dental hygienist for over ten years and is actually a level 1 sommelier! Katrina is based in Phoenix, AZ and works for AZPerio, the largest periodontal practice in the United States. She is also an educator, consultant and speaker.

In this episode, Katrina goes over and demystifies new periodontal terminology and classifications, reveals where you can build true value in your clinical work, and explains why you should really think about what you say when educating patients on periodontal issues.

EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS:

Interview starts: 14:53

- Katrina explains the importance of visually demonstrating to audiences and patients how periodontal disease can affect a person’s oral health.

- Michelle and Katrina reflect on how long it used to take to get licenced for anything.

- The eye-opening moment that woke Katrina up to a long-standing issue with how hygienists discuss—or rather, DON’T discuss—periodontal issues with their patients.

- Why how you say something can matter even more than what you say when bringing up periodontal concerns to apprehensive patients.

- Katrina guides us through a very detailed tour of the stages of periodontal disease.

- What are the best tools for identifying the early stages of periodontitis?

QUOTES:

“This is our opportunity to rebrand dentistry.”

“I love socializing with my patients, but there’s a time and a place for that socialization.”

“If there’s more debris than we can manage in that small chunk of time we have to actually scale, let’s appropriately diagnose that case.”

“Patients need to know the ‘why’.”

On this week’s episode of Fast Facts - Perio Edition Katrina Sanders, RDH dives into AAP staging and grading, opening the conversation by covering stage one periodontitis and how we classify patients that are standing on that border land between gingivitis and periodontitis.

Quotes:

“So typically, when these patients present with clinical attachment loss, I want to be very clear, the AAP in their framework indicates a patient with stage one periodontitis as a patient who has a pocket depth maximum anywhere in the mouth of 4mm.”

“I want to conclude by sharing that this patient has not lost any teeth due to the periodontal disease process and our Academy indicates that stage one periodontally diseased patients have an opportunity for early intervention and monitoring”

On this week’s episode of Fast Facts - Perio Edition, we are going to unpack a weird fact, a fun fact that some of you might know around the utilization of statins as an adjunct to scaling and root planing.

14 Feb 2022Fast Facts: Perio Edition “Periodontitis as a Manifestation of Systemic Disease - Infantile Genetic Agranulocytosis00:05:15

On this week’s episode of Fast Facts - Perio Edition, Katrina Sanders, we are continuing the conversation around periodontitis as a manifestation of systemic disease discussing patients that present with Infantile genetic agranulocytosis.

Quotes:

You see, an individual who has Infantile genetic agranulocytosis is an individual who is born, present at birth with this congenital or genetic disorder. We also, by the way, can have individuals who experience acquired agranulocytosis.”

“We understand, of course, that these neutrophils, these white blood cells, are a really important component of the immune system because they aid in the fighting of infection. So if an individual has infantile genetic agranulocytosis, these are individuals who absolutely are going to be prone to infection.”

02 Jun 2021282 Student Focused Presents: The Roses And Thorns Of Dental Hygiene School01:01:37

Please Leave a Review!

It’s A Tale of Two Hygienists’ monthly student roundtable episode, which means Andrew and Michelle have invited a roster of guests to educate student listeners on a chosen topic. This month, guest co-host Claire Jeong, MS, RDH, joins Andrew and Michelle in welcoming some recent dental hygiene graduates to the podcast. Alyssa Todora, Bonny Harris, Keyla Lee, and Katie Sinclair are the four stellar graduates whose instructors have recommended them as excellent candidates to share their observations regarding both their education and transition to working in the profession here today.

In this episode, Claire shares details about her new podcast, and our graduates offer their perspective on the professional positions they have chosen to accept, the highs and lows of dental hygiene school, their areas of confidence and nervousness regarding their new positions, and the rotations in which they were able to participate. Together, the panel discusses dental hygiene school curriculum, the understanding that dentists have of the work of which hygienists are capable, a valuable Facebook group, and their ‘do’s and don’ts’ advice for current students.

EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS:

Interview starts: 3:14

- Claire’s new podcast, ‘RDHBites’

- Our graduates and the schools from which they are graduating

- How they chose the jobs they have lined up

- The Dental Implants Uncovered Facebook group

- The highs and lows of dental hygiene school

- Areas of confidence and nervousness as they enter the profession

- The rotations in which they were able to participate

- Dental hygiene school curriculum

- Dentists’ understanding of hygienists’ capabilities

- ‘Do’s and don’ts’ advice for current students

QUOTES:

“For me, personally, I wanted to be able to experience different offices, I wanted to see what I liked.”

“I think the hardest part was, you kind of always were criticized in dental hygiene school - kind of felt like everything you did was wrong.”

“I definitely made some really great relationships - I think lifelong friends.”

“Now that I'm graduated, I kind of just feel super empowered.”

“I'm also super hard on myself.”

“So I'm super grateful for the faculty that I was able to run into.”

“There are names of people that I know from my instructors that I feel like I could email or reach out to for support or for ideas. And so I think, you know, that's pretty cool.”

“My first day on the job, I died already inside!”

“I don't know what I should be nervous about or what I don't know.”

“I had one of my worst experiences in my rotation.”

“I don't really know what to expect, but I am excited, and I'm having a very positive mindset about it. And I'm just ready to take whatever comes at me, and I'm just going to have to roll with it.”

“Even on those days where I'm not, like, deep scaling, I'm working my butt off and talking about sleep, and I'm talking about my functional therapy and education.”

“You are more than a scaler.”

“A dental hygienist is an advocate and an educator.”

“Definitely don't procrastinate. It just causes more stress….don’t try to be perfect.”

“Don't compare yourself to other students in your cohort.”

“Ask questions to your faculty. Ask questions to even the students with your cohort, and just stay on top of everything.”

“I actually, like, injured my wrist doing online school.”

“Be nice to yourself.”

“Keep learning.”

“Just know that you are coming into an amazing profession.”

Our guest this episode is William Hang, DDS, MSD. Both an orthodontist with Face Focused Orthodontics and lecturer on orthodontics and orthotropics, William has completely rethought his approach to working with patients in order to maximize their airway health and reduce craniofacial discomfort.

QUOTES:

“Putting braces on a teenager is pretty much nothing more than rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.”

“I happen to believe that dentistry is literally at the center of health care.”

“Everyone says ‘expand, expand, expand,’ but the reality is that’s not where the progress is gonna be made.”

“Why have we made these artificial limitations to what we do just because we’re dentists?”
