10 Sep 2021Claire Sulmers (New York Fashion Week Bonus Episode)00:49:52
Claire Sulmers is the Founder and CEO of the notorious digital fashion publication Fashion Bomb Daily. Her ascent into becoming one of the industry’s top self-made media moguls was not an easy one. Often met by industry gatekeepers who refused to give Claire a seat at the table, the Stone Mountain, Georgia native built her own. Equipped with an unrelenting dream and her Harvard degree in French and African American studies, Claire charted her own path by taking internships and positions at publications like Upscale magazine, Newsweek, and Real Simple, where she built a fashion empire in her cubicle.   To take her career to the next level, Claire took a risk by moving to Paris, France, and landing a coveted internship at Vogue Paris working under the legendary Corine Roitfeld. Upon her return to the U.S., Claire’s blog was booming and transformed into a full-fledged business and the successful brand we all know today. Kirsten Holtz Naim sits down with Claire to discuss her unique career path, her quest to show the diversity of black fashion, not forgetting to celebrate the small wins, and the importance of putting God first. 07 Apr 2021Cheyenna Clearbrook00:25:53
Cheyenna Clearbrook is one of the reality stars from the hit television series, Deaf U on Netflix. The show follows a group of deaf students at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. as they navigate the complexities of college life. The show was in my que for a few days and then I finally decided to take a look. I was immediately captivated and pulled in by the students’ storylines complete with dating drama, the quest for identity and acceptance, and the introduction to some of “the elites” within the deaf community.  Cheyenna was my absolute favorite. I deeply connected to her story and love her style! She’s a YouTuber with over 125,000 subscribers and does some pretty awesome fashion and beauty tutorials. After binging the series in less than two days, with tears in my eyes, I DM’ed her on Instagram to see if she would be interested in becoming a guest on the podcast...and she said YES! I know that you all will love her as much as I do. A major thanks to Arianna Saccante, our American Sign Language- English Interpreter who made this conversation possible. Enjoy! Connect with Us! Simon Doonan is an author and fashion icon legendary for his unforgettable storefront window displays at Barney’s in New York City. Ashley Longshore believes that a girl is her own best friend. The Louisiana based artist described as “the modern Andy Warhol” is known for her signature colors and bold aesthetic; with pop culture and Hollywood glamour centric iconic art pieces. As a self-taught, unapologetic painter and prolific creator originally from Montgomery, Alabama, Ashley is the true embodiment of originality -- using mixed mediums for each unique creation -- and quickly becoming a legend in the art and fashion community. Longshore has worked with a variety of celebrity art collectors from Blake Lively to Salma Hayek and became the first solo female artist to exhibit her work at Bergdorf Goodman. Longshore’s entrepreneurial and go-getter spirit led her to launch her own business - encouraging artists to sell their work for what it’s worth - outside the art galleries and traditional means of art curation.  In this week’s conversation, Ashley Longshore and I discuss the courage and conviction necessary to follow through on your vision, how to tap into your natural gifts, and why being “ambitchous” is a good thing. 19 Jan 2022Cynthia Rowley00:46:57
At an early age, Cynthia Rowley, a native of Illinois, discovered her love of sewing. With an artistic and creative gift that spanned beyond her garments, Cynthia studied painting and fine arts at the Art Institute of Chicago. She would later pivot into fashion after observing the constraints of the art world environment, shifting into an industry that would allow her to be creatively free to express herself. After completing her academic studies, Cynthia moved to New York City, ready to pursue her dream of becoming a designer.  After a decade of building her business, Cynthia would be honored by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) with the Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent in 1994. Cynthia's brand philosophy, that fashion should be an adventure, catapulted her line into a full-blown brand containing a series of products, licenses, and brand collaborations. She would also author the Swell book series, featuring her illustration and writing talents. Combining her penchant for all things pretty and sporty, Cynthia collaborated with Roxy Quicksilver to produce surf and snow collections and even launched a CR Surf Camp in Montauk.  Cynthia is also the recipient of The Art Institute of Chicago's Legend of Fashion award and the Designer of the Year award at the 37th Annual American Apparel and Footwear Association American Image Awards. Host Kirsten Holtz Naim took a moment to sit down with Cynthia to discuss the importance of listening to your audience, how naivete can be a form of power, the importance of an internship, and not taking "no" for an answer.  Enjoy the episode?
