16 Jul 2023 | The Dangers of Neuturing with Dr Lise Hansen | 00:46:25
This week we’re joined by Dr Lise Hansen who returns to talk about the latest science behind neutering and spaying. We last recorded an episode about this same subject three years ago, it seems that the messages from a raft of science on the side effects of neutering is yet to filter down into routine Vet practice. Dr Lise explains that the issue surrounds the reproductive LH Hormone, which continues to be produced by the brain even when the sex organs are removed. This hormone accumulates in the body and becomes out of balance, creating health issues from osteoarthritis, cancers, to hypothyroidism. The science is only 10 years old, and change can be slow to take effect. But according to Dr Lise this is the biggest news in the Veterinary world, which she predicts that in 10 years time, neutering will be considered not only an unnecessary, but unethical procedure. Dr Lise points out that in Norway it is already illegal to neuter unless for extreme health reasons, and in Scandinavia generally it’s frowned upon as a practice compared to the complete opposite in the USA where Dr Lise thinks that a possible alternative like vastectomies for dogs and ovary sparing spays for bitches will become the norm, in the USA, but for now Dr Lise encourages you to read the science much of which is included in her book : The Complete Book of Cat and Dog Health. The Complete Book of Cat and Dog Health is published by Hubble&Hattie and is available everywhere you buy books including Amazon. It contains a full chapter (16 pages) covering the topic of neutering including alternative surgeries and the implications of living with an entire dog. It also lists scientific references.

16 Jan 2022 | Cally Beaton | 00:48:00
This week Anna talks to comedian, writer, and podcaster, Cally Beaton, as she embarks on getting a new puppy. Anna has mentioned in the past what potential new pet parents need to consider before committing but in this episode Anna takes Cally step by step on what she need to be thinking about. Cally has now found a reputable breeder and is awaiting the birth of her puppy at the end of March. A life long animal lover and current cat owner, Cally's growing desire to get a puppy was confirmed when Anna was a guest on her podcast earlier this year. But as a working comedian and someone who travels a lot, there was a lot to think about first. Anna provides the answers all potential pet parents need to hear. 22 Oct 2023 | Ira Moss Returns | 00:48:17
This week we’re joined by Ira Moss, CEO of All Dogs Matter, London’s independent re-homing charity. We discuss the situation in rescue with XL Bully types, being abandoned since the news of the XL Bully imminent ban. Ira explains that when the breed is banned it will be illegal for rescues to re-home these dogs and they will face euthanasia. One of Ira’s bugbears is buying dogs online, as a recently new phenomenon which are a shop window for puppy farmers and make it far too easy for anyone to buy a dog. And sell them when the dog is wanted. We talk about French Bulldogs and why ADM is overloaded with ex breeding bitch Frenchies, and others that have behavioural issues making them undesirable and abandoned. We agree that so much needs to be changed in the world of dogs, where pooches have become commodities and the ‘must-have' accessory. We also chat about cats and how they’re being abandoned with cat rescues also full to the brim! 14 Jan 2024 | Aurélie Four | 00:22:32
This week we’re delighted to chat to Photographer, Aurélie Four. Originally from France, Aurélie is a London based wedding and lifestyle photographer for people who love dogs. Her relaxed, candid approach made for great conversation on her extensive knowledge and love of dogs, Welsh corgis especially: letting “dogs be dogs” and their well behaved humans be themselves in the love, life and work moments she captures. Her own pup, Marcel, whose social media (@lecorgi) she runs, inspired her to live more in the moment and make memories. Their travels together and considering dogs to be very important family members made Aurélie want to champion businesses that welcome them and to support charities helping those in need. Together they volunteer to cheer elderly patients and staff at a local NHS hospital. 08 Sep 2024 | Battersea Wear Blue for Rescue Pt 1 | 00:24:59
Celebrating Wear Blue for Rescue month at Battersea, Anna spent a morning at the London HQ to record a double bill! In this part one we’re talking to Lucy Stratton, the Dog Team Leader at Battersea. We have the pleasure of meeting Bil,l a 10 month old mix breed found abandoned, and now looking for his forever home. Lucy reiterates Battersea’s matching process, similar to a dating app that ensure that you and your prospective pooch are a match made in heaven for the best chances of a long happy life together. We discuss how every dog is an individual and how training and rehabilitation programs differ. With some dogs better suited to a more rural environment in either Battersea’s Brand's Hatch or Windsor facilities. With abandonment at record levels, Lucy explains how heart breaking it is if owners are forced, through no fault of their own, but down to circumstance, to handover their dogs. The team offer emotional support without any judgement and if the owners want can receive updates.

We’re joined by Jenny McKay, the Reverend Vet, who has been approached by Australian animal welfare agencies working with the only organisation in the Gaza Strip that rescues stray animals called Sulala Animal Rescue. Jenny is appealing to everybody to think of animals that get caught in the ‘crossfire’ in war. Animals in Gaza need help! The World Health Organisation recognises that aid - medication, food and water needs to be supplied for all animals, pets and livestock - as an urgent appeal the the link to donate is below! We chat about Jenny’s role as a vet - being a pathologist screening biopsies for cancer cells. And as a huge cat lover, Jenny talks about why cats make great pets. 24 Nov 2024 | The Silent Killer | 00:34:51
We’re joined by Caroline Allen, Chief Veterinary Officer, RSPCA and Rob Denman, Head of Professional and Field Services Gas Safe Register discussing the silent killer that is carbon monoxide poisoning in our pets. Raising awareness as part of Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week (Monday 18th-Friday 22nd November 2024), the Gas Safety Register and the RSPCA have joined forces to raise awareness of the vital signs your pet has potentially been exposed to carbon monoxide, saving not only their lives but yours too! New figures show almost all pet owners (99%) are not able to correctly identify all the signs that indicate their pet could be suffering from poisoning from a carbon monoxide leak, despite pets often feeling the impact much earlier than humans due to their size.

27 Aug 2023 | Lucy Meggeson | 00:49:49
This week we’re joined by the amazing animal lover Lucy Meggeson to talk about her cat called Johnny Depp. On the rare, yet significant appearance of a cat on A DOG’S LIFE, is to celebrate cats and pay tribute to Anna’s late cat, Gremlin, but also to talk about Anna’s and Lucy’s mutual connection, which is Johnny Depp. Lucy's own ground breaking podcast - Spinsterhood Reimagined - dares to investigate the elusive yet secretly celebrated world of Spinsterhood. What it means and its growth as arguably a very cool demographic. More importantly why Spinsterhood is growing and how Lucy helps empower women in a world where conventional ‘almost Victorian’ values are increasingly misplaced. We discuss all the animals who have impacted on Lucy since childhood, and why her cat, Johnny, fulfills some inner nurturing instinct. We also discuss why Spinsterhood could be enviable for some, and chat about the episode Anna recorded with Lucy revealing her meeting with Johnny Depp one evening in Soho. 20 Nov 2022 | Calming For Dogs | 00:29:31
This week Anna is joined by Dale Nash from Pawable to discuss the first collagen (Collar-gen) for dogs. As the market booms in humans for collagen (and for good reason) it's important to understand that just as it depletes in us as we age, the same is true in our dogs. Not only 100% natural, the Collar-gen is species appropriate and easily absorbed through the gut. As a very important structural protein abundant in all our cells, it helps with mobility, skin & coat and digestion. The success of Collar-gen since its launch earlier this year is testament to its efficacy, vouched for by Anna’s dogs Prudence and Mr Binks. Her cat Gremlin is also taking it, proving how it can be taken by any mammal. NEW to Pawable’s range is Calming which is a supplement packed with a combination of anti-inflammatories and anti-bacterials that combine to boost the immune system, respiration, and brain health. Like a multi-vitamin, it offers a multi-purpose supplement combining of herbs like Thyme, Chamomile, and Ginko along with Phytoplankton, Coconut oil, Gogi berries. Offering value for money per serving, it's something to think about for Christmas. 08 Aug 2021 | Rosie Wilby | 00:27:09
This week Anna is joined by Comedian and Award Nominated Podcaster, Rosie Wilby, talking about her new book The Break Up Monologues: The Unexpected Joy of Heartbreak. Using her own experiences and those of some others, Rosie investigates why life can be like a palindrome: going backwards and forwards. The book discusses how tragedy through time becomes comedy, and how we learn from our mistakes, as we try to understand ourselves through others. Pets feature as a major strand through the book as highlighting why they can save a relationships, and equally work to break them up - It’s me or the dog type scenarios! Brilliantly written, very funny and sad, it's a roller coaster and a thought provoking look at what makes us human. And why pets, dogs in particular, perhaps can humble us into understanding the truth - and that really dogs are ‘man’s best friend’ being able to to truly offer what we seek in people - unconditional love. 21 Jul 2024 | Jenni Murray revisted | 00:41:19
As part of our Summer ‘revival’ replaying some key episodes from A Dog’s Life’s archives, we’re joined by the Broadcasting legend that is Jenni Murray talking about her love of dogs. From her first Corgi cross called Taffy, to her two Miniature Schnauzers called William and Mary. After Jenni battled cancer, she persuaded her husband to accept her first Chihuahua named Butch, latterly joined by two more little Chihuahuas Frieda and Madge. At the time of recording in Jenni’s garden Butch was almost 16 and Jenni shares the journey with Butch as her rock through a particularly difficult time. We discuss the impact of dogs and the irony they’re defined as Man’s Best Friend when in fact history concurs that women played the main role through the domestication process. We chat about the inevitable and the harsh reality that dogs simply don’t live long enough, underlining the fact that dogs define chapters in our lives. We chat about the responsibility a dog is and the commitment that dogs are that so many people have sadly underestimated through the pandemic boom in ownership, to whats considered a crisis with rescue centres overflowing with unwanted pooches. We talk about vet bills and postulate that vets could be biting the hands that feeds them, which is interesting considering the current CMA investigation! We postulate about the origin of the Chihuahua down to the fact that both Caravaggio and Botticelli painted dogs that look very like a Chihuahua long before Columbus discovered America. We chat about the extreme discussion about dogs and cats being demonised as contributing to climate change by extreme environmentalists. We celebrate dogs and their huge impact on our lives. Sadly since this recording little Butch has passed, but his legacy will live on! 30 Jun 2024 | Pets Lets | 00:43:58
We’re joined by Estate Agent and Landlord, Russell Hunt whose company, PetsLets, specifically focuses on finding properties for people with pets. We chat about why the conversation about renting pet friendly accommodation as fallen off the ‘radar’ of late. We discuss why it is important that whichever party wins the upcoming election, they will prioritise the Renters Reform Bill particularly where the clause section 21 is concerned that currently gives powers to Landlords for short notice terminations and evictions. Despite over half of Briton’s owning a dog, renting with pets is still considered a niche market, with many estate agents focusing on lets without pets, rather than thinking more inclusively. We chat about the pros and cons of additional insurance, and why unfortunately some landlords may have been disappointed by irresponsible owners and as with everything it's the minority that spoils it for the majority. Russell explains that the issue is partly down to supply and demand, and that often Landlords accept the highest bidder that appears to be the lowest maintenance for the property. We segue and talk about Leasehold properties too and why before agreeing to any purchase or rent, ensure that your dog’s name, is on the lease! 19 Jun 2022 | Collagen for dogs! | 00:36:22
This week Anna is joined by Dale Nash from Pawable who chats about a new Collar-gen that’s been launched for dogs. From the makers of a human collagen called So Body Co, the Collar-gen for dogs was inspired as customers would ask if they could give the human brand to their dogs. Being passionate about preventative care, and prolonging longevity, Anna couldn’t wait to find out more about this product, and discuss the benefits of Collagen as a supplement. As a structural protein, it's known for helping joint health, but also as being a structural element of all our cells. It helps with cellular energy, processes, immune responses, cellular communication , and processes for tissue maintenance, especially in the intestinal wall. 27 Aug 2022 | Pet Insurance Part 1 | 00:43:55
This week Anna is joined by Andy Pearce, CEO of Petcover Insurance. As an expert of many decades in the filed of pet insurance, we chat about why a dedicated pet focused insurance company is the best to opt for. Specialising in animals should mean that representatives are understanding to your needs, and be familiar with the treatments and emergencies that pet owners will be claiming for. Launching Petcover a year ago into the UK market, it is a long established insurer in Australia. We discuss the differences between the UK and Australia, and he answers a lot of questions from the issues with pre-existing conditions, accidents, lifetime cover and why insurance firms often do not pay out for dentals and issues with pet’s teeth. We also discuss the caveats that are common with insurance policies including annual boosters, insurance for only one condition - once. And why that can be an issue for pet owners who have not read the small print, or don’t understand why an ear problem can only be claimed for once. We chat about Petcover and why as a firm it is passionate about education, helping pet owners make the right healthcare choices to keep their pet in optimum health. And why as a firm they are all about happy, healthy pets! Written as a life tribute to her dog, Logan, a rescued Border Collie, Donna talks about why it was so emotional to write but cathartic at the same time. It is a book about Logan and Donna’s special journey together, like a journey that all dog owners experience, but for Donna Logan was her ‘heart’ dog. Having been her constant companion through relationships, her marriage, and the birth of her children, it is a roller coaster and an emotional read as it will resonate with everyone who has loved and lost a dog. Understanding this Donna has dedicated the book to everyone who has lost a pet. Whilst talking about her own experience which pulls at the heart strings, Donna highlights top tips for making the inevitable as pain free as possible, with points to remember like caring for yourself as you grieve. Whilst sad and resonating outwards, it is also a celebration to remember the good times, the experiences, and ‘mountains' climbed together that will never leave as they are memories fixed into your heart. This week Judy Phillips, co founder of a new British petcare company called Sniffe & Likkit, joins Anna to talk about their range and brand ‘philoso-woofy'. The Sniffe is the key aspect across its grooming, fragrance and gifting products. Understanding that a dog’s sense of smell is over a million times more sensitive than ours, Sniffe & Likkit’s 100% natural aromatherapeutic scents won’t get up your dog’s nose. Rather dogs will love the signature fragrance: Woodland Wonderfur running in its grooming range. Formulated using essential oils like Cedarwood, Pettigrain, Vetiver and Ho Leaf. It’s aim to calm and soothe dogs, and bring the great outdoors into your home, and regular pampering routine. The aromatic scent is alluring and good for humans too! Created by experts from the human world of natural skincare, but tailored for dogs. Thoughtfully designed in stand-out recyclable packaging, Give a Dog a Cologne, Wippets Cleansing Wipes, Fragrant Fur Coat Shampoo and The Fab Paw Conditioning Balm combine ingredients like Quillaja Bark Soap, White Willow Bark extract, Aloe Vera, Ho Leaf and Paw Paw. There’s no hidden nasties and it’s pH balanced for dogs. The range taps into the demand for more natural alternatives and a transparency about ingredients that have been ethically sourced. And an understanding that spending time with your dog cannot be underestimated. The inventive products are catering for modern dogs with an ethos about building the bond between dogs and pet parents through grooming and pampering. And for dogs on the go that might need a freshen up before going into the office, or dog friendly hotel! The range also features Glove My Dog a towel that designed like a giant oven glove that uses fabric made from sustainably sourced bamboo. Tapping into a dog’s sense of smell there’s the home barking kit to that will get your dog’s tongues and tails wagging. And for humans the scented gift cards allow humans to spread the kindness and 'scents' a message. 05 Jun 2022 | Wagit! | 00:30:28
This week Anna is joined by Nadia Leguel founder of Wagit, championing dog friendly, Nadia is bringing her vision to making it easy to find pubs, cafes, restaurants that are genuinely dog friendly. The app, which also includes, groomers, pet boutiques, and more is designed with modern pet parents in mind. Wanting to take their pooches with them when out socialising, Wagit makes this so easy with hundreds of tested venues listed. Nadia and her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel have spent months checking out places, being tipped off about new venues joining the dog friendly revolution. We chat about her Cavalier, Lola, and why she inspired Nadia to take the plunge and set up Wagit to help other like herself. We talk about her appearance of BBC’s Dragon’s Den, how despite not receiving investment, the exposure created a wave of interest. Also we talk about Nadia’s experience working at the famous ‘Open Table’ which gave her the experience to set up Wagit. Based on the same principle to book in advance, read reviews simply with a couple of clicks, it sets Wagit apart as a must have platform for discerning pawrents in London and beyond!

25 Jun 2023 | Save the Beagles! | 00:48:32
This week we’re joined by Phil Green, animal advocate, dog lover and proud pet parent to Scarlett the Beagle. Rescued by The Beagle Freedom Project in 2016 from a toxicology laboratory in Hungary, she had been bred by Marshall Bio Resources at the huge HQ in New York for the purpose of vivisection. Scarlett is one of the very few lucky ones enabled freedom, aged only two years. Both Phil and Janie Green had their names down for a rescued Beagle, understanding the long socialisation journey ahead. Scarlett adapted very well to her rural life in Essex, and enjoys the sights, sounds and smells of woodlands, and outdoors that she was deprived of. Scarlett has helped raise awareness of the atrocities that these Beagles endure in their very short terribly sad lives. In the hands of ‘white coats’ that justify their salaries from private ‘Big Pharma’ firms making everything from cleaning products to headache pills. The practice of vivisection is morally and financially bankrupt in an age when we have advanced technology that can do testing more economically, accurately, and without causing huge suffering to animals - in this Beagle. Scarlett has become the face of many campaigns , not least The Camp Beagle, to raise awareness and urge the public to support her in getting vivisection - the dark secret - raised in Parliament, get legislation amended in line with the Animal Welfare Act. 10 Oct 2021 | Janetta Harvey of Schnauzerfest! | 00:33:44
This week Anna is joined by author, Janetta Harvey, who is also the founder of SchnauzerFest. Supporting Schanuzers needing care and forever homes, it’s also a hub for Schnauzer owners. Inspired by Janetta’s first rescue mini Schnauzer, Susie-Belle, who was scarred being bred on a puppy farm in horrific conditions. Passionate about campaigning to ban this evil trade, Janetta rescued one of her current four schnauzers, a boy named Albert Claude, from the one of the UK’s largest puppy farm (Eric Hale’s in NI, he was exposed in a Panorama documentary, the Dog Factory, in 2016, did nothing to stem let alone stop his horrific business), he was sold in a pet shop and given up to a rescue the next day (aged 5 months), Her other three - Renae, Cerise and Angel are also puppy farm rescue dogs. She chats about why ending puppy farming is clearly very difficult, and discusses how hard it is to rehabilitate dogs exposed to such atrocities. Why she does this in Susie Belle’s memory, which was the subject of her book 'Saving Susie Belle'. Instagram : @SchanuzerfestUK

30 Jul 2023 | Dog Friendly Cinema | 00:41:38
This week we’re joined by Amber Pegden, Marketing Manager at The Picture House Central. Based in Piccadilly in the heart of London’s Theatreland and Soho, it's also home to very special dog friendly screenings. Amber has been instrumental in creating this extremely popular dog-centric cinematic experience. She chats about why as a dog owner herself she understands why fellow dog owners would prefer to go and see films with their dogs. Interestingly it's not to see Lassie or 101 Dalmatians, its the latest ‘blockbuster’ movies. We talk about how Anna’s own Mr Binks is a seasoned cinema goer, and how Prudence, Anna’s Bull terrier, went to see the multi-award winning Isle of Dogs, created in Hackney in London. Amber highlights the thought behind her project which includes a seat for your dog that’s included in the price for a single human seat. On entering the Auditorium dogs are offered their own blanket to keep their seat dog hair free, with fresh bowls of water dotted around for the dogs. There’s dog-friendly ice cream on offer, and of course dog-friendly popcorn too. We chat about the joyous spirit of these screening where like minded folk get together and celebrate their dogs. Its a chance to sharpen their training, as well as meet and greets. As Anna’s personally most favourite thing to do as an inspired concept taking dog friendly to new limit. What’s extraordinary is that the dogs really enjoy it and settle. In over six years there’s never been a complaint about dog hair or any allergic reactions! It has to be experienced to be believed! Later, Anna joins her friends Jo Good, Henry Brandman, and Caroline Brill, all with their dogs to see the Barbie Movie. 29 Sep 2024 | Bone Broth and the Microbiome | 00:45:29
We’re joined by Microbiologist, Dr Carol Hughes, and Rachel Down, the founder of Boil and Broth, to discuss the ground breaking research project called the Biome Broth study. As a world first, the aim is to put Bone Broth to the test to see if adding this age old remedy to dogs’ diets will enhance their microbiome. With 29 dogs taking part, none of whom had had broth before, and on taking this powerful food for only four weeks, their biomes were tested again, and in all cases a remarkable improvement has been seen in this short time-frame. Notably the microbiomes as tested by Dr Carol at Aberystwyth University revealed the cases restoring to a natural balance with bad bacteria strains being reduced, and the good bacteria strains being enhance, along with an increase in the microbial diversity. The project aims to discover more about how Bone Broth interacts with the biome’s bacteria, helping to restore its natural ecosystem, which is responsible for 80 per cent of the immune system. Funds are needed to delve deeper, focus on a project around cats, even discover what is the magic ingredient of Bone Broth or simply a combination of all its natural assets! So we discuss the Prize Draw crowd funder which hopes to raise funds for further research along with awareness and education as to the health benefits of Bone Broth as a superfood. There’s a chance to win some amazing prizes including ‘free consultancy’ with Anna on achieving overall wellness. 09 Feb 2025 | Esther Logue on Paleo Puppies | 00:43:57
We’re joined by Esther Logue from Paleo Ridge talking about the company’s latest additions Paleo Puppy and Paleo Senior - both of which are industry firsts by containing Reishi Mushroom tincture along with a host of health boosting ingredients, not least the brand’s ethical and sustainably reared meats. We chat about why feeding a natural whole food unprocessed diet is peace of mind in a bowl as a way of boosting cellular function. Fulfilling a demand for a puppy choice, Paleo Puppy also contains added superfoods like wheatgrass and butternut squash, simply to add additional antioxidants that can help a puppy’s rapid growth and cellular development. The Paleo Senior is adapted with older dogs in mind with slightly less bone content and a slightly higher inclusion of Paleo Ridge’s superfood boost called Berry Good. Discussing medicinal mushrooms as a burgeoning area drawing on Traditional Chinese Medicine and the on going discovery of foods as being medicine. We touch on the microbiome, its role as triggering immune system function and why feeding whole foods naturally support the trillions of bacteria needed for a robust and diverse microbial colony. 27 Nov 2022 | Dr Sean Wensley | 00:38:44
This week Anna is joined by PDSA Vet Sean Wensley chatting about his book Through A Vet’s Eyes. As a candid exploration of how we live with animals in the modern world, Sean explains why we mustn’t lose touch with nature and all animals in the natural world. They offer stark contrast to our farm animals and pets being kept in captivity. We discuss the importance to understand the Five Domains: Nutrition, Behaviour, Physical health, the Environment, and the Mental Health of all animals. In the wild animals these domains are provided naturally through survival, but Sean argues we can all do better to ensure the well-being of all animals in our care. He chats openly about his experiences as a bird watcher noticing how captive birds display behaviours that indicate stress, unhappiness and boredom. We talk about why play with dogs and cats is better than food as a way of engaging them and tapping into their natural instincts. We talk a lot about farming and how our perceptions of food, and meat have changed in the past few decades. How consumers can drive change creating a demand for ethical rearing and practices; about understanding the natural collaboration between animals and humans, and why we could all do better especially under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, itself a radical step change, the details of which are often misinterpreted, overlooked, or ignored. We also chat about Government and the new Sentience and Kept Animals Bill that still awaits its airing date. 03 Oct 2021 | Jen Berezai of AdvoCATS | 00:34:35
On this week’s show Jennifer Berezai of Advocats East Midlands joins Anna to discuss the landmark Heads for Tails campaign, which is about lobbying for change for lets with pets. Aiming to bridge the gap between renters with pets and private landlords operating a no pet’s policy, Heads for Tails aims to encourage insurance policies that cover both the landlord and the pet owner. Despite Government’s ‘Model Tenancy Agreement’ recommending that landlord’s are pet friendly, this remains a set of guidelines only. Jennifer aims to offer solutions to enable ‘renters’ to enjoy the massive health benefits of pet ownership that has been displayed through the pandemic. Ending the sad fact that 55% of Britain’s population cannot own a pet simply down to Landlords’ imposed no pet clauses. 02 Apr 2023 | Dr Andrew Prentis | 00:45:42
Vet and Environmental campaigner, Andrew Prentis is also a ‘fellow’ at Imperial College. He is amongst the team of scientists that have advised pet owners to be more sparing in their use of toxic flea and tic treatments, warning that they are entering watercourses and damage aquatic ecosystems. Reviewing 160 scientific papers on the impact on aquatic ecosystems of imidacloprid, a pesticide used in 138 pet treatments sold in the UK. They found that “one monthly flea treatment for a large dog contains enough imidacloprid to kill 25 million bees". In the decade up to 2019, the sale of the pesticide for veterinary use in the UK increased 152 per cent. In that year, 2,500kg of the substance were sold for veterinary use, not much less than the 4,000kg used in 2014 for combined agricultural and veterinary use. We discuss how we can change our approach to parasite control in our pets by adopting a Test Before You Treat approach that’s used in Scandinavia where Vets only prescribe treatments if an animal actually has fleas. Certainly where wormers are also concerned (similarly penetrating waterways and the landscape), there’s an easy alternative simply by testing your pet’s poop. If no worms are found, why give your dog a wormer? One of the sticking points of the discussion is that the market for parasite control in the vet industry is valued at £170 million. We chat about how practices could recoup this revenue in other proactive ways. 15 May 2022 | Official: UK a Nation of Dog Lovers | 00:27:42
This week Anna is joined by Sarah Hollinshead, Head of Brand & Content at Attest, which is one of the largest consumer SaaS platforms. We’re chatting about a new study that reveals that Brits are still barking mad about dogs. Flying in the face of the soaring cost of living pet parents prioritise their pets and go the extra mile, notably taking the time to shop at their local pet boutique, rather than online. The research confirms that dogs and cats are important family members. Brits are making a significant effort to make their pets feel a part of everyday life - from birthday celebrations, to home-cooked food and regular outings. Moreover the research reflects the changing face of pet ownership and the huge impact pets have on our lives - for the better. It appears Britain is still a nation of animal lovers! We joined by elite dog trainer Rory Hennebry and Film Director Paul Webster discussing the new documentary called Canine. Nominated by the upcoming Tribeca Film Festival, Canine follows a Malinois called AK becoming trained as a conservation canine to help fight the battle against poachers in Namibia. The rise in the ruthless poaching and targeting the Black Rhino for its horns - makes them one of the most endangered species on the planet. The Black Market value for the rhino horn has driven huge massacre, and dogs like AK being trained by the charity K9 Wildlife Project are making a massive difference on the front line to track and apprehend the poaching criminals. The documentary follows AK from a puppy with a difference with his trainer Rory to the frontline and the critical transfer to his new handler, and the environment. 17 Nov 2024 | Pet Blood Bank | 00:35:10
Vet and Clinical Supervisor, Lara Howe, at Pet Blood Bank joins us to chat about this life saving charity. Founded in 2007, Pet Blood Bank is a charity that offers a blood bank service for dogs who run very similarly to the human blood service. Owners bring their dogs along to donate blood at one of their many sessions across the UK. The blood is then processed and stored ready to be sent out to vets when they need it. Every donation a dog gives can help to save the lives of up to four other dogs. Before Pet Blood Bank, vets would have to find a donor themselves, often in the middle of the night and with a very sick patient waiting. Setting up Pet Blood Bank means that vets now have immediate access to blood when they need it. We chat about which dogs make great donors, their necessary age, weight, the procedure, the number of times they can give blood in a year.We chat about the different blood types and why there is a demand for the less common negative blood type which belongs to only 30% of dogs. Just as giving blood for humans this is positive experience, and one that’s rewarded with treats, bandanas to become a fun experience. Pet Blood Bank operates nationally and is always looking for more donors! 18 Feb 2024 | The Wonders of Colostrum! | 00:46:12
We’re joined by Liz Rutherford and Freddie Rostand talking about their journey to bring organic colostrum to not just pets, but to their owners too! We chat about what colostrum is, and how with minimal processing it offers the most potent and biologically available immune system boost. Studies concur that this ‘first milk’ delivers vital nutrients and antibodies. By supplementing with this natural powerhouse is shown to balance and help fight disease and the ageing process. As a natural resource to balance the immune system, colostrum is also known to alleviate persistent skin conditions, increase mobility, stimulate cognitive function and boost gut health. Having seen the benefits of colostrum on her own dogs and cats for over a decade, Anna is thrilled to now be able to source this potent ’superfood’ in the UK, which previously she purchased from Switzerland. 19 Sep 2021 | Pet Abduction | 00:35:46
This week Anna is joined by Beverley Cuddy who amongst other dog-centric roles, is one of the Patrons of SAMPA - the Stolen and Missing Pets Alliance. They chat about the great news that government are introducing new legislation - the Pet Abduction Law to make penalties for dog theft in line with the crime. With specific legislation that recognises that dogs are clearly not ‘property’ or chattel with consequences of up to seven years in prison for ‘abducting’ a dog. The hope is that dog theft will decrease. A long time coming, this law has been campaigned for years, not least by Debbie Matthews, and Vets get Scanning. For years criminals have optimised a loophole in the Theft Act 1968 where dogs have been previously classified along with laptops and lawnmowers! The surge in dog theft through the pandemic when the demand for dogs outstripped their supply, made national headlines and brought the attention to the pain and suffering and complete devastation that stealing someone’s dog has on families. Government’s change to classify dogs separately and not as part of the Theft Act 1968, which clearly has left families vulnerable to nasty criminals, has been spear-headed by Sir Iain Duncan-Smith. Having championed #PetTheftReform, he has helped bring massive change in only a few months. And a major move under their new Animal Action Plan which aims to make Britain a leader in animal welfare globally. The term ‘abduction’ implies another aspect of their ‘plan’ to classify animals as sentient beings, which is significant and in line with modern socio-economic trends where dogs are now firmly considered as family members and not as property under the Theft Act 1968. We are living with dogs in such different ways now, and dog ownership has soared compared to back in the day as we seek dogs constant companionship, their skills as de-stressors, and their gateway to the outdoors. Discussing the positive changes Government have initiated, we also discuss why the legislation around Breed Specific Legislation isn’t as positive, where sadly only two MP’s attended a debate in parliament on its possible change much to the disappointment of the dog community. In Beverley’s long standing position as Editor of Dogs Today Magazine and founder of Tailwise we also talk about why Beverley has launched a new Awards called the Bark Marks. 26 May 2024 | Dogs Die In Hot Cars | 00:20:58
We’re joined by Anna Ewers-Clark, lead Vet at The Blue Cross, chatting about the dangers of the hot weather. Every season has its pros and cons for dogs, and in Summer the extra daylight hours give us more time to walk your dog, but it's also a time when a walk in the park can turn into a vet emergency. We discuss why dogs overheat so easily, and what signs owners should be aware of to spot in time to prevent an urgent trip to the vets. We discuss why young and older dogs are more susceptible. Why the flat faced breeds find the heat very difficult, and why darker coated dogs absorb the rays faster than paler coated dogs. And all the tips to keep your home and garden cool and the fun games to play indoors and out when it's hot. Not forgetting how to ensure smooth, cool travel for dogs in the car, and why you should never leave a dog in a stationary vehicle even in the shade on a hot day. 20 Oct 2024 | Zazie Todd Returns | 00:57:24
What is the difference between fear and anxiety? This week Anna discusses this with author and animal behaviourist Zazie Todd on the release of her third book called BARK. Add this to her own book shelves along side Zazie’s critically acclaimed books Wag and Purr (see previous episodes). In Bark, Zazie decodes the latest science on fear and anxiety, bearing in mind that 75% of all dogs express some form of anxiety through their life stages including: biting, resource guarding, shyness or aggressive barking. Bark is divided into sections weaving in commentary from leading behavioural experts, a clear explanation of classical conditioning along with true anecdotes from leading lights/experts on their own experiences. Highlighting that fear and anxiety in dogs is not uncommon, and even accomplished trainers have also experienced issues that should be seen as a journey together, turning situations around using positive training methods. Discussing why understanding dogs reactions and why every dog is an individual, Zazie explains why to work slowly, at your dog’s pace, and never to be afraid of going back a few steps as you work with your dog through their life stages. 08 Oct 2023 | The Terrier Tax | 00:30:51
We’re joined by Vet and Environmentalist, Andrew Prentis, who joins us the day after 2023 was declared the hottest day on record. We discuss why pet ownership should become more sustainable. Referencing that a Labrador emits more C02 in its lifetime than an average 4 x 4, and the fact that dogs and cats consume 20% of the world’s meat supply. Highlighting that pets help with companionship, physical exercise, mindfulness, and so much more, that surely the carbon paw-print is sustainable from a societal perspective compared to air travel, buildings’ emissions, and industry. Andrew postulates that dogs and cats could become Vegan, and that its time to choose smaller dog breeds. We also discuss the ’Terrier Tax’ where treats, chews and accessories for small dogs are often priced the same as for bigger dog versions - a smart move by food firms? Do we need all these accessories for dogs? Is capitalism getting in the way of pets’ welfare and the need to shift to more sustainable options? 16 Mar 2025 | The Pet Abduction Act | 00:41:46
I’m chatting to Beverley Cuddy, editor of Dogs Today Magazine and Patron of the Stolen and Missing Pets Alliance. Pet Detective, Wayne May, Police Liaison officer for Dogs Lost, about these worrying statistics and that clearly the legacy of dog theft and the thousands of tragic cases that peaked in 2021 with 2,760 dogs stolen with barely 19% of dogs ever being reunited with their families. The Pet Abduction Act in May 2024 has clearly played a positive impact, resulting in a 21% decrease in thefts. But the fear and the horror stories of theft have left their legacy. Despite the positive impact of the landmark legislation - The Pet Abduction Act, statistics sadly reveal that 61% of dog owners are still concerned about their pet being stolen. A third of dog owners are feeling “extremely” or “very” worried so, to mitigate the risk, wisely : A fifth paying for professional dog-sitting services when away. 06 Oct 2024 | Paul Koudounaris | 01:18:03
We’re joined by Dr Paul Koudounaris talking about his book ‘Faithful until Death’. As a first in terms of investigating Pet Cemeteries all around the world, Paul admits this was a labour of love of 11 years. Revealing the history of pet ownership as in the late Victorian era industrialisation meant more folk moved into cities, creating a new kind of pet husbandry, which included giving them a ’good’ death. Paul explores Cemeteries, and tombs from as far afield as Thailand, across Europe, in the UK and across the USA. We chat about the ridiculous thought that animals do not have souls, as an illogical concept of theology. We talk about the resistance to burying pets in churchyards, and the people who helped make change with setting up/ building dedicated pet cemeteries. As a massive animal lover, Paul became a pet bereavement councillor for several years as well as tracking down the author of iconic poem : The Rainbow Bridge, and in revealing one of the greatest mysteries, of the Paris Pet Cemetery called Le Cimitières des Chiens in Paris where the iconic canine film legend, RIn Tin Tin, is said to be buried. We chat about Tawny the ex circus lion who lived in Beverley Hills and rests in the cemetery in LA, and more! The book takes you on an emotional journey, through which there's comfort in how many have grieved their pets, for a loss that is means losing apart of oneself, and how Pet Cemeteries set in history our love for all animals. As the late Queen famously said: “Grief is the price of Love.” Faithful Until Death is published by Thames & Hudson or you can buy it here Follow Paul on Instagram For more about Anna go to annawebb.co.uk Music and production by Mike Hanson for Pod People Productions Cover art by Jaijo Cover photo by Rhian Ap Gruffydd at Gruff Pawtraits To advertise on or sponsor A Dog's Life email: info@theloniouspunkproductions.com

03 Mar 2024 | Carol Hughes Pt 2 | 00:49:09
Carol Hughes is back for the second a mini-series on the Microbiome. Carol’s journey began being commissioned by the Welsh Government to research plant compounds, in particular natural occurring steroids. Carol explains how this naturally moved into researching animals microbiomes as part of her parent company Phytorigins. It was this research that brought Carol into focusing on the Microbiome. With technology advancing particularly with Artificial Intelligence. We discuss how working with leaders in the field at Aberystwyth University, how her team has conducted the first in-depth observation of different ‘biomes: cats, horses, and of course, dogs. We talk about her first study relating to obesity in dogs, and the bacteria - in fact a natural plant steroid that stimulates a pathway to the brain that could help reducing a tendency for obesity. Highlighting that you are what you eat, we explore how the microbiome responds to different hormones, and the lack of them, and the fact that it's a very delicate eco-system that relies on so many factors. Carol believes the microbiome shows everything in your dog, when you know how to read the picture presented. What she has discovered is that dogs in the UK are not well, and that their’ biomes are more compromised that cats and horses. Her research can highlight why spaying and neutering can affect the biome, and how antibiotic resistance is very obvious, along with other bacteria that are missing, painting a sad picture. 04 Jun 2023 | Red Light Therapy | 00:49:00
This week we’re down at the Mind, Body and Spirit show where we caught up with Ruth Milner talking about ‘Red Light Therapy’. As a member of the International Light Association, Ruth is an expert authority on the power of light as a healing modality. We discuss the sudden boom in LED sourced Red and Near Infrared devices, which have flooded the beauty market recently. We chat why not all ’devices’ are the same in their evidence based doses. We discuss the how light interacts with our cells at a biological level to provide vital energy and power ATP. We discuss the latest volume of The Power of Light, Colour and Sound for Health and Wellness from the International Light Association, in which Ruth’s chapter of using a device called Photizo has helped all creatures great and small: from tigers, elephants, horses, dogs and even hedgehogs. And we discuss why the Photizo range gained its Medical CE status -with so many applications to help on a human level too - we chat notably about evidence on Red Light and Parkinson's disease. 29 Aug 2021 | Dr Nick Thompson | 00:38:03
This week Anna is joined by the vet, Dr Nick Thompson, to chat about a campaign he is fronting called ‘Ditch The Dry’. Talking about ‘ You are what You eat’ and why overly processed foods like kibble, compared to fresh raw balanced complete meals, are damaging to your dog’s health; and why pet parents could do better by their dogs, helping to minimise common but serious health conditions like diabetes, arthritis, heart disease and obesity. Passionate about highlighting why common dry food ingredients like rice, barley, maize, or corn, make high glycemic diets, which are pro-inflammatory and not species appropriate. And why an anti-inflammatory diet made from fresh meat and botanicals - like many complete balanced raw frozen options - simply promotes optimum health by using quality species appropriate ingredients like fresh, ethically sourced meat. Anna and Nick also discuss whether it’s ethical for dogs to be Vegans, and de-bunk the notion that dogs are ‘omnivores’, when dogs are simply biologically and physiologically designed to be faculatative carnivores - complete with a carnivorous digestive system. Both Anna and Nick are on the same page on nutrition, and as a vet Nick has been fighting for responsible, species-appropriate raw food feeding for over 25 years.

19 Feb 2023 | Joe Flanagan on Pro-biotics | 00:39:42
This week Anna is joined by CEO of Ingenious Probiotics about what represents an explosion in the science of healthy bacteria. We discuss probiotics in an external environment rather than an internal one. Based on our knowledge, albeit recent and expanding, we understand the vital role of probiotics as balancing bacteria in our microbiome. Joe discusses how we can use probiotics as a cleaning product to kill pathogens indoors with out adding chemicals. Too many chemicals in the home environment can make your indoor environment 100 times more toxic than outdoors. The issue with dogs is that the explore the world nose first, and sadly overtime many chemicals used in the home leach / off gas very toxic ‘endocrine disruptors’ that can play havoc at a cellular level. Choosing a more natural option to work symbiotically with nature can also be used to clean ears, remove tear stains, and clean teeth. Joe talks about the range of products from shampoos to sprays for the coat. Thinking about how the enzymes also work we discuss how the the probiotics actually work to keep good bacteria in the environment and react accordingly to the pathogens in the environment. As an emerging science , this episode clarifies we’ve just begun to scratch the surface of probiotics in the context of us having lived in a very sterile world. Retracing their time training on an ‘experience’ walk, where Anna highlighted some training tips. That walk was for an article in The Observer magazine about walking your own dog, and how it helps your dog’s and your own well-being. Passionate about punctuating your dog’s day, and building proactive games into an everyday walk for extra enrichment. Anna demonstrated how to connect with your dog and make the walk interactive. Genevieve and Anna chat sitting on a log that became a fun agility obstacle. They chat about why its important to train a perfect recall, so your dog is never a nuisance to other people or their their dogs. Why spending quality time with your dog means you get to know your dog. And why training and adapting life around your dog through their life stages helps keep them on the ball, and reduces anxiety. But they also discuss how dogs enrich our lives, often in times of crisis. Apart from highlighting how Pepper helped Genevieve and her family through the Lockdowns, but when Genevieve was diagnosed with cancer. We chat about her book, Milkshakes and Morphine and why Pepper helped the family cope and pull through this testing chapter. We talk about how social media influences are connections , even to dogs, but ultimately why a house is not a home without a dog! Grab a copy of The Observer today to read all about it.

05 Feb 2023 | Andrew Hale | 00:50:20
This week we’re joined by Andrew Hale. As a certified dog behaviourist, one of the founders of the UK Dog Charter and much more, he runs his practice in south Devon called Dog Certified Care. We chat about how his human psychology degree and work in practice for people inspired helping owners and their dogs. Without ‘humanisation’ Andrew talks about why we must factor the emotional experience into training and behaviour, indeed life itself. With so much science highlighting emotional intelligence in all animals, especially dogs, Andrew’s view is about ensuring dogs are kept safe but allowed free expression. And seeing learning as an interaction, building a relationship rather than exclusively on operant conditioning. It goes without saying we discuss why lifestyle, experience, accommodation must be factored into the choice of dog. How stress causes disease, and why humans can be emotional contagions. We chat about a natural remedy helping balancing the modern life stressors with calmer dogs, calmer people and a more harmonious relationship. 03 Jul 2022 | Dogs in Yellow | 00:26:18
This week Anna is joined by Sarah Jones who rescued Bella eight years ago and soon discovered Bella was very nervous and reacted when her space was invaded by other people and dogs. Realising that the majority of dogs display some sort of anxiety, and are reluctant to socialsie with unknown doggies, Sarah devised a range of yellow leads, collars, bandanas jackets in yellow , which is the colour recognised to highlight that your dog needs some space. Understanding that thousands of dogs suffer with being reticent about being approached, Sarah launched #DogsInYellow a dedicated day to celebrate nervous dogs, and celebrate their differences, rather than be misunderstood. So the range of yellow accessories continues to expand. It’s the Yellow army. 22 Aug 2021 | Stephen Jardine | 00:28:53
This week seasoned Broadcaster & Journalist, Stephen Jardine joins Anna to chat about his puppy: Frankie , the Norfolk Terrier. Having lost his beloved Cairn terrier Billy aged 13, it took Stephen and his family a while to bring another dog into the family. Billy left them heart broken. Understanding that the same pain would inevitably happen again with another dog, Stephen and his family resisted another dog. But believing a house is not a home with a terrier, Frankie - the Norfolk terrier recently moved in. We chat about the trials and tribulations of staycationing with a cheeky puppy terrier, the joys of experiencing the beaches, and Cornwall’s dog friendliness, not least that dogs are a social network without technology. We talk about both the positive and negative effects of the pandemic on dogs. And discuss regional differences as both Stephen and Anna have lived and worked in Paris, so they chat about why Paris bucked the trend as perhaps Europe’s most dog friendly capital, way before the value of ‘hound pound’ hit the UK. We discuss what it is that connects us to dogs and vice versa. Highlighted by the iconic statue of Greyfriars Bobby , the Scottish Skye Terrier. Legend has it that Bobby lay beside, guarding his masters grave for 14 years until Bobby passed away. Quite the tourist attraction, the statue, which is also a drinking fountain, was erected in his honour on Candlemaker row, opposite the graveyard where he spent 14 years of life. Stephen regularly hosts the mid morning show on BBC Radio Scotland and more, as well as writing a Food column for The Scotsman. 01 Sep 2024 | A Dog's Life Archive: Dr Jean Dodds | 00:42:36
To conclude our August Archive Season, this week we’re joined by the legend that is Dr Jean Dodds talking about vaccines. As one of the pioneers to research the duration of immunity (DOI) of modern vaccines, Dr Jean has led the way for the WSAVA (The World Small Animal Veterinary Association) to recommend Titre Testing over annual boosters. Having studied how the DOI of initial puppy shots can last a minimum of three years, if not a life time, Dr Jean believes in #TestBeforeYouTreat and that’s for annual vaccines as well as wormers. A Titre tests picks up the serological immunity that your dog has developed against the core diseases: Parvo, Distemper and Hepatitis, and helps pet guardians manage their dog’s immunisation rather than over vaccinate. For over five decades Dr Jean has noted the side effects of many vaccines, not least from the ingredients or adjuvants that are added including Mercury. We chat about the difference between active vaccines and non-active vaccines, and the possible side effects from the latter, and what you can do to minimise the risks. We chat about the best time to vaccinate your puppy, and we also discuss Hemopet the blood bank Dr Jean founded in 1986 where bloods for Thyroid assessments are sent globally. In 2015 Dr Jean published the best selling book Canine Nutrigenomics - foods to heal your dog naturally. We also talk about environmental stressors and the food chain too! 30 Oct 2022 | Trick or Treats! | 00:32:31
This week Anna is joined by Roz Lishak co-founder of By Benji to chat about Trick and Treat on Howl-O-Ween. We chat about the range of unique Biltong beef treats that are made in the UK by slowly air-drying the beef in a herbal marinade for extra tenderness and palatability. And why By Benji is all about championing healthy species appropriate treats to complement a healthy natural diet for your pooch. Anna is conscious that many people forget how treats count to the overall health and calorie intake for your dog. And why using high value rewards you can train the most complex ticks, but above all it's about training the basic cues, not least the elusive recall that is essential in today’s busy public spaces. Roz highlights the range that includes enrichment chews, handy training treats, the biltong sausage varieties that are softer and crumblier, ideal for older dogs and puppies. And there’s the Biltong food topper, which is great to get fussy eaters eating. Ultimately Roz champions training and using the delicious biltong to bring joy to both the dogs and their pawrents. 07 May 2023 | Hercule | 00:35:11
Phil Heckels, AKA Hercule Van Wolfwinkle, is a pet portrait artist with a self-proclaimed ‘ultra-realistic style’ that has gained him worldwide fame and an ever-increasing gaggle of disgruntled customers trying to get their hands on him! But all of that changed one late summer afternoon in 2020 when, whilst trying to coerce his young son into making some thank you cards, he doodled a picture of their family dog. The picture was rubbish, so naturally he stuck it on Facebook. Visit the website or follow on Instagram

10 Jul 2022 | Dog Friendly Restaurants | 00:24:54
This week Anna is joined by Martin Williams, the founder of London’s premier steak houses, M Restaurant and Gaucho. He chats about why he wanted to open his restaurant’s doors to dogs at a time when the concept of ‘Dog Friendly’ hadn’t reached the mainstream. Proud of his decision to incorporate special ‘six-leg’ menus and events for dogs and their people to enjoy, the space at the Victoria flagship restaurant lends itself perfectly being so spacious, it can easily accommodate a Christmas party of rover 80 Guide Dogs - just one of many events he’s hosted in aid of charity, and offering great fun for all alike. He explains why it is not ‘illegal’ to invite dogs into a restaurant, so long as common sense prevails and there’s space to offer those not dog friendly to also feel relaxed. He also chats about his Labradoodle, Hudson, who left his legacy on the restaurant, always remembered through some artworks, and branding as being Martin’s inspiration to be so #DogFriendly. His young Labradoodle, named Wilbur and Mr Binks enjoyed meeting and recording in person too! This week Anna is joined by Rachel Bean RVN - qualified veterinary nurse. Apart from being an amazing ‘dog person', Rachel is the creator of the iPET Network's canine first aid qualification. We chat about this and about common accidents, like how to offer the first line of care for cut paws, insect stings, and with more serious situations like possible bloat or for dogs that might be choking. Rachel chats about her dogs too, and about her work with rescues in India and Thailand. Her message is about how by staying calm and being informed, you could help save your dog’s life. Rachel is also the Manchester co-ordinator for the Street Paws charity, and co-founder of Vet on Set, which ensures the welfare of animals on TV and film productions. 06 Aug 2023 | Trained Puppies Don't Bite Children | 00:45:30
This week we're joined by Trainer & Behaviour expert, and Groomer, Deidre Ryan, whose book Trained Puppies Don’t Bite Children has to be the best dog training book Anna's read for years! Simply laid out in 100 short chapters with perfect illustrations, the book is based on the principles of the Sunday Times bestselling book “French children don’t throw food” by Pamela Druckerman. Deidre explains why she noticed she was raising her children in a similar way to how Deidre had raised her own five dogs. She realised that there were many parallels when it came to raising puppies and decided to write a no-nonsense approach for pet parents. We discuss the term pet parents and concur we are dog owners. Nevertheless in her book Deidre explains: "in the parenting book there is a ‘cadre’- a framework for how children are expected to behave. It combines “a little bit of strictness, with a lot of freedom”. My dogs are allowed lots of off leash freedom on walks, but I insist on a strong un-negotiable recall. We also talk about the animal welfare crisis in Ireland and how Deidre is supporting Dog Advocacy Ireland. 27 Mar 2022 | Street Paws | 00:25:51
This week Anna is joined by Michelle Southern, Founder of Street Paws. Celebrating the charity’s sixth birthday, it's raising awareness of rough sleepers and their dogs with a national 274,000 steps challenge. We chat about Michelle’s commitment to help the rough sleepers and homeless community with dogs, and how the charity was born. Supplying dogs with everything from vital vetcare, microchips, medication, food, blankets, coats, collar, their outreach teams help hundreds of dogs a month. Michelle and Anna discuss why dogs are so important to the homeless community; they are literally all these people have. They also talk about why they are so committed to them and why they have a better life than many dogs as they’re with their human 24/7. But as the bond between them is so tight it can cause problems to find pathways for the homeless. All because so many hostels and social accommodation still refuse dogs. And no one is prepared to abandon their loyal best friend. The 274,00 steps challenge is a national campaign and aims to raise awareness for the estimated 274,000 people that are now homeless post pandemic, with thousands more likely to lose their homes.
