(S4-Ep13) The Four Tops - Reach Out (Motown)

Released July 1967 and Recorded between 1966-1967

Reach Out is the Four Tops’ best-selling studio album and a landmark Motown release. The album features their signature hit, “Reach Out I’ll Be There,” It showcases Levi Stubbs’ passionate vocals, dramatic orchestration, and the Funk Brothers’ impeccable musicianship. Other standout tracks include “Standing in the Shadows of Love,” “Bernadette,” and “7-Rooms of Gloom,” all highlighting the group’s dynamic intensity and James Jamerson’s masterful bass playing. This was the last album the Four Tops recorded with the legendary Holland–Dozier–Holland team before they departed from Motown, marking the end of an era. To broaden the group’s crossover appeal, Motown’s Berry Gordy had them cover several contemporary pop hits, including The Left Banke’s “Walk Away Renée,” Tim Hardin’s “If I Were a Carpenter,” and two Monkees songs, “I’m a Believer” and “Last Train to Clarksville.” Though some of these covers felt somewhat forced, the album remains a defining moment in their career. Reach Out was a commercial success, reaching #11 on the Billboard Top LPs chart and #4 in the UK. Its legacy endures, earning a spot on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and solidifying the Four Tops’ place in Motown history.

Warren Wolf’s History of the Vibraphone pays tribute to 11 legendary vibe players, including Lionel Hampton, Gary Burton, and Dave Samuels, presenting a deep dive into the vibraphone’s jazz legacy. Starting in classical music under his vibraphonist father’s guidance, Wolf trained on vibraphone, marimba, xylophone, drums, and piano from a young age in Baltimore. Influenced by his dad’s extensive jazz record collection and the local organ trio jazz scene, he eventually studied under Dave Samuels at Berklee, where he later taught. Wolf’s rich blend of early classical rigor and exposure to jazz and R&B shaped his style, which now spans swing to fusion.

In History of the Vibraphone, Wolf performs each track as an homage to original artists, joined by saxophonist Tim Green, pianist Alex Brown, bassist Vicente Archer, and drummer Carroll “CV” Dashiell III. Standout selections like Gary Burton's “Captain Señor Mouse” and Samuels’s “Spring High” reflect Wolf’s influences and his mission to celebrate lesser-known vibes players. Currently a professor at Peabody Conservatory, Wolf remains dedicated to jazz education. Baltimore’s thriving scene is central to his work, with venues like Keystone Korner and An Die Musik hosting vibrant jam sessions. "Animalization" remains a testament to The Animals' significant role in shaping the era's rock music landscape with their electrifying performances and blues-infused style.

Released March 1967- Recorded April-May and November of 1966 (Verve Records)

Despite its initial commercial failure, the Velvet Underground & Nico (1967) is one of the most influential albums in rock history. The album, produced by artist Andy Warhol, fused avant-garde art with raw, experimental rock, tackling taboo subjects like drug use and urban decay. Lou Reed’s stark lyricism and John Cale’s avant-garde instrumentation—particularly his electric viola—set the band apart from their contemporaries. Tracks like Heroin, Venus in Furs, and All Tomorrow’s Parties showcased their uncompromising artistic vision. Though largely ignored upon release, the album became a blueprint for punk, noise rock, and indie music, influencing artists from David Bowie to Sonic Youth. The iconic banana cover, designed by Warhol, remains one of rock’s most recognizable images. Over time, The Velvet Underground & Nico earned its place as a seminal work, proving that commercial success is not always a measure of artistic impact.

S4-Ep.2 The Monkees-More of the Monkees (Colgems)

Released January 9, 1967. Recorded June 25 – November 23, 1966

More of the Monkees is the second studio album by The Monkees, which features a mix of pop-rock and folk influences. The album showcases the group’s emerging sounds, which had very little to do with the Monkees themselves. The manufactured group mainly performed songs by top songwriters as singers, while some of the most talented studio musicians handled the best.  More of the Monkees captured the sounds of pop music of the era with its catchy melodies and upbeat tunes. The album's themes often revolve around love and relationships; the album's commercial success solidified The Monkees' place in pop culture and set the stage for the Monkees to have enough clout to demand more creative control. What you get with this album is some finely crafted songs written by talented songwriters and performed by skilled session musicians.  Members sing the songs of the Monkees, and each has a distinct voice.

22 Jun 2023Chuck Lambert Interview 00:12:09

Chuck Lambert Interview

Chuck's musical education started long before he picked up a guitar. At age eight, he studied oboe and piano.  Four years later his godfather exposed him to the musical diversity of Caribbean culture and encouraged him to play guitar.  While in high school he played bass and guitar in small R&B combos, rubbing elbows and jamming with future members of Parliament Funkadelic. While attending Lafayette College in the early 70's, he was a member of the Tim McCabe Blues Gang. The band's primary function was that of a backup band for touring blues legends on the East Coast college circuit. It was then that he was able to play for legends John Lee Hooker, J.B. Hutto and Screamin' Jay Hawkins. He also gained valuable exposure playing college parties and small clubs in the Delaware River Valley.

Most recently, Chuck has been playing guitar and singing his blues for crowds up and down the Jersey Shore, Philadelphia New York City and metropolitan New York areas while always returning to play venues in his hometown of Red Bank, NJ. As a member of the Norman Seldin Big Band, The Panama Chapel Band, The Cal Vetrane Blues Band, The Haugenes Project and a guest artist with The Red Bank Blues Band, Heavy Soul, Herd of Blues, Al Holmes and The Tribe, Poppa John and The Jam Band he has lent his vocal talents and guitar to many a fantastic night.

Chuck has led the band as they opened for popular artists such as Little Feat and Kenny Wayne Shepard. The band has performed in prestigious musical venues like NJPAC, The Count Basie Theatre and SOPAC. They have performed at Le Festiblues International de Montreal; The Riverhead Blues Festival in Riverhead L.I.; The Blues, Brews and BBQ Festival at Six Flags Great Adventure, Freehold NJ; The Westfield Jazz & Blues Festival in Westfield NJ; The Red Bank Jazz & Blues Festival, Riverfest and The Jazz in the Park Series in Red Bank NJ; The Clearwater Festival at Gateway National Park at Sandy Hook NJ and Asbury Park NJ; The Blues by The Beach Concert Series in Long Branch NJ and represented The Jersey Shore Jazz and Blues Foundation in 2007 and 2013 at The International Blues Competition held in Memphis Tenn.

Original Released October or December 1966? Without “For What It’s Worth,” then Re-released in March 1967 - Recorded between July 18-September 11-1966 (ATCO)

Buffalo Springfield's self-titled debut album, initially released by Atco Records in late 1966, introduced the world to the band's distinctive blend of folk, rock, country, and psychedelia. The original release, recorded between July and September 1966, lacked a major hit but gained significant attention after a March 1967 re-release added the protest anthem "For What It's Worth." Inspired by the Sunset Strip riots, this song became a defining track of the 1960s.

The band was formed in Los Angeles in 1966 and featured Stephen Stills, Neil Young, Richie Furay, Bruce Palmer, and Dewey Martin. Their music was marked by rich harmonies, shifting lead vocals, and layered guitar work. The album's tracks explore themes of self-reflection and relationships, with standout songs like "Nowadays Clancy Can’t Even Sing" and "For What It's Worth."

Despite their brief existence, Buffalo Springfield made a lasting impact on music. Internal conflicts and lineup changes led to their breakup in 1968. Afterward, members pursued successful careers: Stills with Crosby, Stills & Nash, Young as a solo artist, and Furay with Poco. Their legacy remains as pioneers of a sound that influenced rock music for years.
