10 Mar 2022 | Making your feature length directorial debut: COMING HOME IN THE DARK with James Ashcroft | 01:13:14
Screenwriter Stuart Wright talks with actor/writer/director James Ashcroft about his feature length directorial debut COMING HOME IN THE DARK.
This New Zealand set neo-noir starts with a seemingly brutal, mindless crime, but evolves into a revenge tale you won't see coming. Harrowing at times, it is also poignant and sad in the way that it draws on a horrendous and shameful chapter from New Zealand's care services recent past to tell a complex and nuanced story in the present.
COMING HOME IN THE DARK is available to watch on NETFLIX

03 Aug 2013 | JK Amalou - writer, director and producer of Deviation, Assassin & Hard Men | 00:42:43
1996's HARD MEN is the grandaddy of the Brit Gangster film revival from the late nineties.
Ridley Scott is a fan of it and Guy Ritchie's Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels took it's lead from it.
Britflicks.com was grateful to spend some time with writer/director JK Amalou on the eve of shooting his new UK thriller 'Assassin' starring Danny Dyer.
In this podcast he treats us to his film making process - often using his 2012 feature Deviation as the example. Aspiring UK film makers should tune in and learn from his experience.

15 Aug 2023 | EP008 GIVE ME THE FEAR – How to make a horror film with A MILLION DAYS (Mitch Jenkins), THE WEIRD KIDZ (Zach Passero) & PUNCH (Andy Edwards) | 00:34:49
Welcome to GIVE ME THE FEAR - the Britflicks Podcast, Frightfest 2023 preview series.
Hosted by screenwriter Stuart Wright, these brief, spoiler free interviews will – across the entire series – help you to discover the kind of knowledge and experience about how to make indie horror films that they don’t teach at film school.
After looking back at the blood, sweat and tears that went into their creative successes, I ask them one last question: If you could hand pick one person to be in the audience (alive or dead, famous or personal to you) for your Frightfest screening, who would it be and why? I think you going to love the answers this question elicits.
This episode features A MILLION DAYS (Mitch Jenkins), THE WEIRD KIDZ (Zach Passero) & PUNCH (Andy Edwards)

18 Jan 2023 | GETTING AWAY WITH MURDER(S) with director David Nicholas Wilkinson | 01:00:46
Screenwriter Stuart Wright talks to David Nicholas Wilkinson, director of the epic documentary GETTING AWAY WITH MURDER(S). After its theatrical release in 2021, it was 17th in The Guardian's 50 Best Films Of 2021.
MORE 4 will broadcast GETTING AWAY WITH MURDER(S) on UK TV
Part 1 on 27th January - Holocaust Memorial Day at 21:00. They have, with David's full blessing, decided, rather than broadcast the full 175 minutes, which is tough going, to put it over two nights.
Part 2 follows on Saturday, 28th January, at the same time.
It will also be on All 4.
Channel 4 have taken the almost unprecedented step of broadcasting each part without any adverts... This film is two decades plus in the making with a tiny budget. "Pass it on", as we used to say, school.

Catch the World Premiere at Frightfest 2022 - Ticket information here https://frightfest.nuwebgroup.com/
Follow Liam Regan at https://www.instagram.com/refusefilms/
Stuart also spoke to Liam about...
5 GREAT TROMA FILMS
Bloodsucking Freaks (1976), directed by Joel M Reed “As a cultural artifact, and as an example of the worst uses of creative energy, however, Bloodsucking Freaks is a must-see. Just remember, if you are offended by it, the joke is on you.” From Classic-horror.com Rob Wrigley
Combat Shock (1984) directed by Buddy Giovinazzo Anton Bitel writes on VODZilla - Combat Shock is a downbeat, depressing film, dripping with a persistent pessimism that runs counter to the prevailing Reaganite ideology of the day. For here, instead of conspicuous affluence and yuppieism, we get an alternative view of street-level life on the destitute, desperate margins of Eighties America, comparable to the hell of war itself.
Surf Nazis Must Die (1987), directed by Peter Gorge “"Surf Nazis Must Die" is the sort of film Ed Wood might have made if he were active today, except he'd be the only one not in on the joke.” David Lazarus, Salon.com
Cannibal! The Musical (1993), directed by Trey Parker of South Park fame… Jenn Dlugos of Classic-Horror.com wrote: “I could go on about amateur screen shots, poor cuts, and very obvious continuity issues, but this is a film that you just don’t care. And if you do care, it’s probably not for you.”
Fatty Drives the Bus (1999), directed by Mick Napier Gordon Maples of Misan TROPE y.com wrote “Fatty Drives the Bus” is not a good movie in any conventional sense of the term, but there is some strange enjoyment to be had out of it.

08 Apr 2022 | Beyond The Hero's Journey w/ author & BAFTA winning screenwriter Anthony Mullins | 00:59:42
Screenwriter Stuart Wright talks with BAFTA award-winning screenwriter Anthony Mullins about one of the most powerful, yet most misunderstood, tools in a writer's toolkit - character arcs.
BEYOND THE HERO'S JOURNEY: Crafting Powerful And Original Character Arcs For The Screen is OUT NOW
Get it straight from the publisher https://kamerabooks.co.uk/index1.php?imprint=4&isbn=9780857305114
Anthony breaks the discussion down into 5 things about his book:
IT’S ABOUT CHARACTER ARCS - The book champions the most powerful, yet most misunderstood, tool in a writer’s toolbox - that is, character arcs - and uses them to challenge that the supremacy of that Goliath of storytelling theory, the Hero’s Journey.
IT’S VISUAL - I use a very visual way to illustrate how character arcs work and how they map the emotional shape of all sorts of stories (not just Hero’s Journeys), from inspiring drama to anarchic comedy to gut-wrenching tragedy.
IT’S PRACTICAL - It’s not all theory. I also show readers how to use character arcs to develop and refine your own writing voice. Once you are able to identify how your favourite films use character arcs, you can use those lessons to figure out what sort of story you want to tell.
IT’S DIVERSE - The book uses extensive case studies from a wide range of films, writers and genres from around the world as well as stories that feature diverse characters. Why? Because I want to encourage writers with a different story to tell.
IT’S GOT EXTRA CHAPTERS - I’ve written two new chapters for the international edition. They’re about the lesser known characters in storytelling - Reactive Characters and Passive Characters - and include a close look at The Big Lebowski, The Father, Dead Poet’s Society, Being There and Midsommar.
IRONY works as a driver of plot… Two choices that are good…

After looking back at the blood, sweat and tears that went into their creative successes, I ask them one last question: If you could hand pick one person to be in the audience (alive or dead, famous or personal to you) for your Frightfest screening, who would it be and why? I think you going to love the answers this question elicits.

This episode features PIPER (Anthony Waller), MINORE (Konstantinos Koutsoliotas) & PAREIDOLIA (Aaron Truss)

28 Aug 2021 | EP008 Future Of Film & Cinema Series, Bryan Hill, screenwriter & comic book author | 01:20:26
Screenwriter Stuart Wright talks to screenwriter, TV writer, producer, filmmaker & comic book author, BRYAN HILL.
Currently, he is working on the HBO Max show TITANS, the upcoming POWER RANGERS movie, the adaptation of the comic book BITTER ROOT for Regina King.
In the comic book world he’s written BATMAN AND THE OUTSIDERS, DETECTIVE COMICS and his own comic book CHARIOT that’s being developed now by Joseph Kosinski (TRON: LEGACY, TOP GUN: MAVERICK).
We touch on adapting comic books for the screen, but in short, our discussion could be summarised as: What you grew up with isn’t the best. Things were different before, and they will be different in the future. Don't grieve what changes. Find opportunity in what's emerging.
We cover:
In what way is the seat of cultural power – in the entertainment business - changing?
In what way is the current state of flux redefining "celebrity"?
Young people aren't cherishing things, they're, but they're personalizing their media in a different way.
Why are changes accessibility not a threat, we just need to adapt?
And much more...
This episode was inspired by twitter thread that Bryan started in response to the 1st August 2021 - SUNDAY TIMES interview titled - "Is Matt Damon the last of Hollywood’s leading men?"
The opening para reads: Matt Damon is baffled by how his children watch films — infuriated as they pause and chat their way through the art form he adores. “The way they watch is different to how we did,” he says. “How can you watch a movie if you are texting? As someone who makes these things I can’t say I love that. Movies as we know them aren’t going to be a thing in our kids’ lives. And that makes me sad.”
